The home jinx for Deccan Chargers continued, as Bangalore Royal Challengers powered to a five-wicket win to register their fourth win of the IPL and assure themselves of seventh place. Set a modest target of 166, Bangalore started slowly, but cameos from Misbah-ul-Haq, Rahul Dravid, Cameron White and B Akhil ensured they got home with one over to spare.Deccan began strongly, but had only themselves to blame for frittering away an outstanding start: Herschelle Gibbs and Adam Gilchrist added 101 in just 11.2 overs, but from there it went rapidly downhill, as they lost nine for 56 in eight overs to slump to 165, after threatening 200 at one stage.Bangalore’s run-chase was hardly smooth, as wickets went down every time they seemed to be wresting the momentum. Kallis, Misbah and Dravid all contributed, but with five overs to go, they still needed 60. While Deccan had botched up with their batting towards the end, Bangalore turned it on, scoring an incredible 65 from the last four.Dravid got it going in the 16th over with three sublime fours – a couple of drives through the covers and a paddle-sweep. Though he got out next ball, Virat Kohli slapped his first ball over cover as 17 came from that Sanjay Bangar over. White, who had motored to a run-a-ball 16, then attacked P Vijaykumar, creaming a four and a six on the on-side to add 14 more runs from the over. Twenty-nine were now needed from 18, which came down to 16 from 12 as Akhil cleverly paddled two fours to fine leg off Vaas, who ended up going for 36 in his four overs.Akhil then decided to finish it off quickly off the hapless Chamara Silva – his second and third deliveries were lofted for straight sixes, and the last one disappeared over square leg as Akhil finished on an unbeaten 27 from seven deliveries, outstanding returns for a batsman who had scored just 14 in his previous five innings.Through the first 15 overs, though, it seemed Bangalore would struggle with the bat again. Kallis played some excellent orthodox strokes through the off side despite being hampered by a hamstring injury sustained while bowling, but awful running between the wickets caused two early mishaps. There was little communication between Kallis, Wasim Jaffer, and Kohli, Kallis’ runner. Jaffer’s return to the IPL was cut short by a direct hit from mid-off, and soon after he was short of the crease for the second time, this time as the runner for Kallis.Misbah was promoted to No. 3, and he seemed to be getting into groove, mixing deft glides and flicks with powerful pulls – Venugopal Rao was carted for 14 from three balls in the 11th over, but just as Bangalore seemed to be taking the initiative, Misbah cracked a long hop from Ravi Teja to long-off. Fortunately for Bangalore, they didn’t suffer too many setbacks thereafter.

If Bangalore built up momentum after an ordinary start, Deccan’s innings was shocking for the manner in which they failed to capitalise on the platform provided by the openers. After choosing to bat, Gilchrist and Gibbs started cautiously, scoring just 22 after four as Anil Kumble – who surprisingly bowled the first over – and Dale Steyn kept it on target. Once they were taken off the attack, the run-fest began. Gilchrist, who scored only six off his first 14 deliveries, changed gears by carving Kallis over mid-on and midwicket for fours, while Gibbs made his South African team-mate suffer in his next over, coming down the pitch and crashing him for a straight six.Deccan then feasted on Akhil, who had neither the pace nor the accuracy to test the batsmen. Two leg-side deliveries were tucked for fours by Gibbs, while Gilchrist was even more severe in his next over: the first two balls disappeared over long-on and midwicket for sixes, while the fourth and sixth went for fours to round off an over which leaked 20.The last stroke also brought up the century partnership – Deccan’s second hundred stand for the first wicket – and after 11 they were cruising at 101 without loss, but from there the innings lost its way completely. Gibbs was stumped, somewhat untidily, by Shreevats Goswami, Gilchrist fell in the next over, lofting to long-on, and the rest struggled.Rohit Sharma was hampered by a blow to his right hand from a Vinay Kumar delivery which rose unexpectedly, and though Rao spoilt Kumble’s figures by creaming two sixes and a four off his last three deliveries, Deccan lost all momentum towards the end, scoring just 16 off the last three overs.Halfway through the run-chase, it seemed Deccan might still get away with their sloppy batting, but that was before Akhil and White decided to turn it on.

Fulham dealt Antonee Robinson transfer blow

Fulham have been dealt a further blow in their bid to keep Antonee Robinson at Craven Cottage this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by Football Insider, who claim that Wolverhampton Wanderers are plotting a move for the 23-year-old defender in the summer transfer window, with the Cottagers thought to be demanding a fee in the region of £10m in order to part with the left-back.

News of Wolves’ interest comes following an earlier report by the Daily Mail that Manchester City, as well as a number of other Premier League sides, are considering a move for the USA international ahead of next season.

Silva will be gutted

Having only joined Fulham from Wigan Athletic in what was a £1.9m deal last summer, the fact that Robinson looks set to leave west London after just one highly impressive season is sure to have left Marco Silva gutted.

Indeed, over his 28 league appearances for Fulham last term, the £6.3m-rated man helped his side keep four clean sheets, in addition to making an average of 1.3 interceptions, 1.6 tackles, 1.9 clearances and winning five duels per game.

The 23-year-old also chipped in for his side going forwards, creating four big chances and making an average of 1.1 key passes in each fixture.

These returns saw the left-back Scott Parker dubbed a “quality” talent earn an average SofaScore match rating of 6.89, ranking him as the Cottagers’ 12th-best player in the top flight of English football.

As such, considering the amount of potential Robinson appears to possess, if Silva were to lose his services this summer, it would not only damage the club’s chances of going on to secure an immediate return to the Premier League next season, but also see them lose a player who could well have been their first-choice left-back for many years to come.

However, with both Manchester City and Wolves being able to afford the American’s £10m asking price, it would very much seem as if Robinson could be on his way out of west London in the not so distant future.

In other news: Silva plotting Fulham swoop for “dangerous” £3.06m-rated gem, fans should be buzzing

Serie A expert drops De Paul claim amid Leeds link - exclusive

Serie A expert Conor Clancy believes Rodrigo De Paul would be able to slot into Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds United side if he did make the move to Elland Road this summer.

The Udinese playmaker has been heavily linked with the club for around 12 months.

Last summer, Leeds saw a bid rejected for the Argentina international, who has enjoyed an exceptional season with the Italian club.

In total, he made 36 Serie A appearances, scoring nine goals and registering 11 assists.

He is a remarkably versatile presence, capable of playing in attacking midfield, on the both flanks, and in central midfield.

It remains to be seen if Leeds will be able to convince him to make the move to Elland Road, as Liverpool are also said to be interested, but Clancy, who is the editor-in-chief at Forza Italian Football, believes De Paul has the tools required to make a real impact at Leeds.

Indeed, he believes he would be able to adapt to Bielsa’s high-pressing demands, provided he was willing.

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, he said: “With the work rate, he’s capable of it, I’m not sure if he wants to do it all that much.

“Particularly coming from Udinese, where he’s the man, he’s the star, the rest of the people do a little bit of his work for him. It might just be a case of, if he goes, he’s limited to an hour a game or something and then get someone else on but if he’s willing, he could do it.”

Leeds must avoid selling England’s Kalvin Phillips

Leeds United must avoid an unforgivable disaster this summer as news emerges over Spurs’ transfer interest in England star Kalvin Phillips.

What’s the story?

Reports in recent days have suggested that the north Londoners have got their eye on the 25-year-old, who’s currently shining at international level with the Three Lions at EURO 2020.

It’s claimed that along with Spurs, the likes of European giants Juventus and Real Madrid are also interested, and that the Whites themselves have put a price tag of £25m “in case one of the clubs that are interested wants to make an offer”.

Bielsa would lose his mind

Not only has Phillips grown into an England international under Bielsa’s leadership, but his market value has risen up considerably too.

When the Argentine took over as Leeds boss back in the summer of 2018, replacing Paul Heckingbottom in the dug-out, Phillips was only rated at £4.5m by Transfermarkt.

But gradually over time, that has gone up, before really spiking thanks to the Whites’ promotion to the Premier League – his value now stands at an impressive £27m, which is actually good enough to rank him as Leeds’ joint-most valuable player right now, joint-top with last summer’s signing Raphinha.

That valuation makes it even more eyebrow-raising for Leeds to apparently only want £25m for Phillips this summer. That would be the kind of ludicrous sale that would surely have Bielsa tearing his hair out – not just in terms of the lack of financial sense it makes, but also for the impact for those on the pitch too.

Former Whites boss, Neil Redfearn said: “Leeds create overloads all over the field. Bielsa is very clever with that but Kalvin is key to it. He is the perfect build for that position, a powerful player but also has a fantastic range of passing.

“When he was younger, we used to have him as a box-to-box player who would score plenty of goals. Bielsa has made Kalvin an expert deep-lying midfielder but he could do both roles.”

It’s a telling sign that in the games that Phillips missed last season in the Premier League – nine to be precise – Leeds won just twice, and lost every single other one.

Phillips is the heartbeat of the midfield, and without him, Leeds look a shadow of their real selves. And that’s not taking into account what he means to the club as a whole too, given how he has come through the system and built a real bond with the fans.

So, news that Leeds would be open to a sale for Phillips is disastrous to say the least. The fact then that they would be open to taking just £25m, and potentially even to a possible European rival in Spurs too, would make it completely unforgivable.

Bielsa would absolutely lose his mind.

Alec Stewart will walk out on his favourite ground tomorrow to become England’s most-capped Test cricketer. The first Test against India at Lord’s will be Stewart’s 119th for England, beating the record set by Graham Gooch. At the start of this season few would have backed Stewart to equal Gooch’s record, let alone beat it, after James Foster was named as England’s centrally-contracted wicket-keeper. But Foster’s misfortune in breaking an arm in the nets in April reopened the door to the 39 year-old from Surrey, who has taken full advantage.Stewart is now likely to enjoy a final tilt at the old enemy in this winter’s Ashes series, and the World Cup that follows in South Africa next February.”The first (Test) is always your biggest cap because every schoolboy wants to play for their country,” Stewart said. “I’ve never been as nervous as when I went out to bat in Jamaica on my debut, but once you get that you then want morebecause you enjoy the occasion.”There’s a thrill about playing for England and a thrill about testing yourself against the best from other countries and that almost spurs you on to want more of it.”Some people get intimidated but others seem to thrive on the full houses andthe big occasions and fortunately I put myself in that category – the morepeople watching and the bigger the occasion the more I like to respond.”He rates that debut among the highlights of his career, along with the Test in Barbados in 1994 when he became the first England player ever to score centuries in both innings of a Test against West Indies, and leading England to a series victory over South Africa four years ago.World Cup campaigns feature among the low points, including the final defeat in 1992 and the campaigns in 1996 and 1999, alongside his failure to come even close to winning the Ashes.Stewart’s parents, Micky and Sheila, will be at Lord’s for the occasion, which will be marked by a presentation to him from captain Nasser Hussain before play starts.”I’ll be trying to treat it like any other Test match, but when you see the list of people I’ve gone past like Gooch, Gower, Geoff Boycott, Ian Botham andColin Cowdrey they are England cricket legends and that’s quite an achievementto have done that,” he said. With the squad beset by injuries to Andrew Caddick, Marcus Trescothick, Alex Tudor and Darren Gough, England coach Duncan Fletcher said Glamorgan’s Simon Jones has “a strong chance” of making his Test debut, although Yorkshire’s ChrisSilverwood is on standby in case of further injuries.Meanwhile, the Indian tourists had the day off yesterday, following their win over Hampshire at Southampton, but the touring party attended an award dinner last night in which star batsman Sachin Tendulkar was named as the fans’ choice for Indian cricketer of the century. The official cricketer of the century was named in Wisden Asia’s ceremony asall-rounder Kapil Dev, but Tendulkar, 29, who equalled Sir Donald Bradman’s record of 29 Test centuries earlier this year, came out on top in the voting polls.Tendulkar came out ahead of Sunil Gavaskar, who holds the record number of centuries in Test cricket, 34 in 125 Tests.Tendulkar said: “It’s a great honour to receive this award. Travelling with the team is like a home-from-home for me and they offer me tremendous support in what I try to achieve as a cricketer.”

Fonseca wants Pellegrini at Spurs

Tottenham Hotspur must reunite their incoming boss with one of his former players this summer…

What’s the word?

Paulo Fonseca looks set to be confirmed as Spurs’ next manager, with the Telegraph claiming that a two-year contract has been agreed with the ex-AS Roma man.

Newly-appointed sporting director Fabio Paratici is thought to be behind the push to secure the out-of-work 48-year-old and the final agreement is in the hands of chairman Daniel Levy and owner Joe Lewis, who are both in the Bahamas.

Now rumours have emerged speculating that the Portuguese wants to bring as many as three of his former stars to North London, in which midfielder Lorenzo Pellegrini features, as per La Repubblica.

Imagine him and Hojbjerg

Spurs could well be in need of midfield reinforcements this summer, depending on the futures of several fringe players.

The likes of Moussa Sissoko, Harry Winks and Dele Alli are certainly facing some uncertainty and you would reasonably expect the club to cash in on these names should they be presented with a decent offer.

All could raise funds to bolster Fonseca’s playing squad, and if he wants the 24-year-old Italian, then he should be allowed to sign him. He could prove to be the perfect partner to Pierre-Emile Hojberg in that engine room.

Valued at £36m by Transfermarkt, Pellegrini was a star performer at the Stadio Olimpico this campaign, having provided 11 goals and nine assists in all competitions from central midfield.

Only Henrikh Mkhitaryan (7.30) rated better than him (7.23) as per WhoScored, with no other Roma player a more creative influence having averaged 1.9 key passes per league outing.

Pellegrini also managed 2.1 shots, 1.3 dribbles, 1.3 interceptions and 1.2 tackles, further cementing his prospects as a viable box-to-box option alongside the Danish powerhouse.

His talents once led to the praise of Roma legend Francesco Totti, who dubbed the 6 foot 1 midfield dynamo a “phenomenal player” whilst Fonseca has waxed lyrical over him plenty of times, calling him “really clever”, “very intelligent” and a “strong character.”

Paratici must look to deliver Pellegrini to his new boss this summer. He needs to be well-backed in the transfer market to stand a chance of getting Spurs back to their best and the Italian star would be the ideal first signing.

Ex-Leeds ace drops huge Bielsa claim

Former Leeds United star Jon Newsome believes Marcelo Bielsa signing a two-year contract would be “amazing” for the club.

The Argentine has enjoyed a superb season at the helm at Elland Road, guiding the club to a top-half finish in their first campaign back in the top-flight following promotion.

However, he has yet to sign a new contract, as he continually pens one-year extensions every season.

It has been suggested by The Sun that Bielsa has already agreed the terms on a one-year new deal at Elland Road and that an announcement is imminent.

Bielsa had denied the prospect of him signing a longer-term deal back in April, but Newsome has suggested that he could well put pen to paper on a two-year contract in the coming weeks.

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, he said: “Undoubtedly well-deserved and there is talk that it may be a two year deal instead of a one year deal which would be amazing for the club really and add a bit more security.”

Bielsa has never spent more than two years at a club, but he is now into his third year at Leeds, and it is almost certain that he’ll be with the club for at least one more season, if not two.

Parents in to save colts dilemma at Portsmouth

Portsmouth look to have secured their premier division status after parents agreed to take control of their troubled colts section

Neil Allen (The News, Portsmouth)10-Jun-2002Portsmouth look to have secured their premier division status after parents agreed to take control of their troubled colts section. But cricket development manager Les Randall has refused to be part of it and quit the club.Randall had earlier been asked to leave the club by officials in a dispute which had left the colts without both training and matches for the past three weeks. The disagreement threatened Portsmouth’s place in premier division one with league rules stating a club must have a functioning colts section to earn accreditation. But fears of demotion to the Hampshire League have been allayed after parents voted to form a committee. In a meeting at Drayton Park on Friday night, proposals were accepted to create a committee containing seven parents and a manager from each of the four age groups to oversee the running of the colts. The decision will see coaching sessions and matches start up once again from today. But Randall has declined to be part of it.A parent said: ‘We were keen for Les to agree to the proposals and run the colts section again.’We hope he will reconsider his decision but, whatever happens, we thank him for his incredible work to date in establishing such a strong colts section.’In the meantime, what we need now is to get the colts back playing cricket as soon as possible.’As part of the new regime, two senior players will be on hand to offer help and advice at every coaching session.A general meeting has also been scheduled for July 1 to adopt a formal constitution. In the meantime, coaching will take place at Drayton Park from 6-7.30pm on Mondays (under-11s), Tuesdays (under-13s) and Wednesdays (under-9s). Under-15s will meet at St Helens on Fridays from 6.15pm.Randall said: ‘I have parted company with the club and would like to thank the parents and colts for the support they have given me at all times. It has been greatly appreciated.’It is true I was invited to take a role in the running of the new section but turned it down.’Colts enquiries can be e-mailed to [email protected]

Inzamam – First 21st Century triple centurion

Inzamam-ul-Haq became the first batsman to score a test Triple Century in 21st century when he scored a massive knock of 329 against New Zealand in the May 1-5, 2002 Lahore Test

Arshad Chughtai07-May-2002Inzamam-ul-Haq became the first batsman to score a test Triple Century in 21st century when he scored a massive knock of 329 against New Zealand in the May 1-5, 2002 Lahore Test. It was the sixteenth triple century in test cricket. All the previous 15 had been scored in the last century. The highest individual innings recorded in the 19th century was 211 by Australia’s W.L.Murboch at the Oval in 1884. For Pakistan, it was the second triple century after Hanif Mohammad’s 337 at Barbados against the West Indies in 1957-58.Incidentally, this was the second triple century on Pakistan soil after the 334 not out by Aussie Mark Taylor at Peshawar, 4 years ago. Yet it set a new highest individual innings record for Pakistan at Lahore. Erasing the previous record of Javed Miandad’s 280 not out against India at Hyderabad (P) in 1982-83. Brian Lara (375) holds the highest individual innings record in Test Cricket.Inzamam-ul-Haq’s innings of 329 is the 10th highest individual innings in this elite list. Sir Don Bradman is so far the only batsman to achieve the unique feat twice. So far, 5 Englishmen, 4 Australians, 3 West Indians, 2 Pakistani’s and one Sri Lankan have reached the landmark. No South African, Indian, New Zealander, Zimbabwean and Bangladeshi batsmen has yet scored a triple test century.
