Everton target Sergio Romero could provide healthy competition in goal

Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford has never really had anyone pushing him onto the next level, which is perhaps why his performances at Goodison Park have started to dip but that could all change this summer…

What’s the word?

According to ESPN, the Toffees are among a host of clubs chasing Manchester United’s number two Sergio Romero before the start of the new season next month.

With Dean Henderson set to compete with David De Gea for the starting spot, the Argentinian veteran could slip down the pecking order at Old Trafford.

Newly-promoted Leeds United and Chelsea are two of the other teams mentioned with interest.

Pickford competition

Pickford has been a fairly reliable shot-stopper for Everton over the past few years, but complacency has appeared to creep in recently.

Following a 3-0 thrashing by Wolves last month, the Toffees faithful hammered the 26-year-old on Twitter, blasting him for being a “disgrace to the club” as well as a “clown.”

It’s not the first time either with the ECHO suggesting that some sort of mistake or blunder is in him each time he steps out onto the field, which is rather worrying.

But when Maarten Stekelenburg is the backup, there isn’t much that can be done.

Romero may not have the most games under his belt in recent seasons, but he’s a more than adept option between the sticks and Alex Iwobi knows that all too well.

During a rare start in the FA Cup back in January 2019, the 33-year-old silenced the Nigerian winger, forcing him off just after the hour mark due to his poor display – only Pierre-Emile Aubameyang could find his way past the 6 foot 4 colossus.

“Whenever he plays, he performs,” said his boss Ole Gunnar Solksjaer just last week, adding that Romero was a “very good goalkeeper” whilst centre-back Eric Bailly labelled him one of the best in the world and claimed that he’s dependable”.

Marcel Brands must swoop him up at all costs.

AND in other news, Serie A colossus could be a cheap Gabriel alternative…

Chelsea: Blues watching Atalanta left-back Robin Gosens closely

Chelsea are reportedly among the many clubs interested in signing Atalanta left-back Robin Gosens this summer.

According to German outlet Kicker (via Transfermarkt), Frank Lampard and co are monitoring the situation carefully after Atalanta gave the defender the green light to leave the club.

The report claimed that the Serie A side will cash in on Gosens if the right offer presents itself this summer. His market value according to Transfermarkt is £18m and potential suitors Inter Milan and Juventus are willing to pay €30m (£26.9m) for his services.

As well as contributing to eight Serie A clean sheets, Gosens has tallied nine goals and eight assists this season (via Transfermarkt). He has also played the majority of the campaign as a left midfielder despite primarily operating across the back-line. His versatility will be a welcome trait to whichever club lands his signature this summer.

Chelsea are currently on the market for a new left-back with reports hinting at a Stamford Bridge exit for Marcos Alonso. The club’s lavish spending so far has shown that they are looking to really kit out the squad and go full throttle for silverware next season.

It seems that Alonso does not fit Lampard’s plans moving forward and could therefore be usurped by a new signing such as Gosens. The German’s attacking versatility matches that of Alonso, who also boasts a high goal contribution tally this term with four goals and three assists.

With Cesar Azpilicueta slotting into the left-back role on several occasions this season and Reece James operating on the right, Gosens could enjoy playing in a more advanced role. His confidence in midfield could really boost Chelsea’s creativity and provide opportunities for the likes of Timo Werner and Christian Pulisic.

Despite the club’s big-money deals making it clear that spending isn’t an issue, signing the 26-year-old Atalanta man for a smaller fee would be a refreshing deal for the Blues.

West Ham news: Hammers promptly dismiss mooted £50m bid for their star

Chelsea have been on a rampage in the ongoing summer transfer window. After already finalising a couple of rather impressive deals, the Blues have reportedly turned their attention to West Ham United’s Declan Rice.

So much so that one of the transfer news suggested Frank Lampard’s squad has tabled a £50m bid to bring the young star to Stamford Bridge. This, however, was promptly dismissed by the Hammers, as reported in Sky Sports’ latest update.

The same outlet states West Ham are adamant on keeping Rice at the club and maintain that he is simply not for sale. Therefore, a bid of £50m would hardly make them reconsider their stance. David Moyes is seemingly keen on the 21-year-old midfielder staying at the club for many years to come and West Ham’s rebuild for the upcoming campaign would very much be centred around him.

Of course, Rice has played in Chelsea’s academy when he was a youngster but was then released aged 14. Now, he still has a long contract with the Hammers that runs until 2024 and the club have an option to extend it for a further year. For that reason, getting him now would be easier said than done for the Blues.

Still, West Ham are in dire need of quality reinforcements themselves but with no money for such endeavours, they might indeed be forced to sell some of their prized assets.

Rice, however, they maintain, won’t be one of those players.

Verdict

The situation at West Ham is far from ideal. Even though they managed to secure their stay in the Premier League, now comes another difficult part of actually repeating that feat next season.

For that to happen, Moyes will undoubtedly have to refresh and further improve the squad this summer. And that only makes the task of keeping Rice in the team that much more important.

Glasgow Rangers: Club confirm departure of Peter Lovenkrands

Ross Wilson and Glasgow Rangers have confirmed that Peter Lovenkrands has left his role as a coach at the club’s academy.

Lovenkrands signed for the Gers as a player for £1.98m in 2000, and soon became a cult hero for the Ibrox outfit, scoring 37 goals in 89 starts in the Scottish Premiership. After pursuing his career elsewhere at the likes of Schalke 04, Newcastle United and Birmingham, he returned to the 54-time Scottish champions as a coach in 2017, first on a part-time basis and then permanently a year later.

Now, though, the Gers have confirmed his departure, saying:

“Rangers can confirm that Peter Lovenkrands is leaving the club to pursue his career elsewhere.

“Peter made over 180 appearances, scoring 54 goals for the club, winning league titles and cups including a stoppage time winner in the 2002 Scottish Cup Final.

“As a coach he has developed his off field skill set in the Rangers Academy working with various age group squads. Peter has had a positive influence on many of our young talents in the academy.

“We respect Peter’s desire to pursue his career elsewhere and would like to thank Peter for his contribution to the club as a player and a coach.

“We wish him every success in his future endeavours.”

This could well indicate that the former Denmark international is looking for a more senior role somewhere else in the footballing world. Still, though, this spell with the Gers will have likely been beneficial for all involved – Lovenkrands has been able to share his experience at the highest level with those coming through the club’s system, whilst the 40-year-old himself has now climbed on to the first rung of the coaching ladder.

Who knows, maybe he could return as manager of the first-team in the future!

Real Madrid pull out of Christian Eriksen race

[ad_pod ]

According to The Daily Express, Real Madrid have ended their pursuit of Christian Eriksen, leaving Manchester United and Chelsea to battle it out for the Dane’s signature – Los Blancos pulling out means that Eriksen won’t be able to follow ex-Spurs Gareth Bale and Luka Modric to Spain and that will surely come as a huge relief to the London club.

What’s the word?

Well, The Daily Express reports that Real Madrid have pulled out of the race for Eriksen over fears that he may cost them too much – unusual, considering their expenditure in recent years – and that the Blues and the Red Devils will now square off for the player.

The midfielder has been in negotiations with the high-ups at Spurs over a new contract – his current deal expires in summer next year – for around a year, but all have thus far been unsuccessful and his future in North London remains in doubt.

Having given England duo Harry Kane and Dele Alli big pay-rises recently, Spurs are surely underpaying 26-year-old Eriksen – the playmaker allegedly earns £75,000-a-week – and will face an uphill climb to keep him on the books, although the news that Real Madrid are no longer in the frame makes their job much easier.

History WON’T repeat itself

Spurs have sold two of their biggest stars to the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium outfit in the last decade for pretty big fees although that now looks unlikely to happen for a third time, with the Champions League winners moving on to other targets.

Bale swapped the English for the Spanish capital in 2013, commanding a fee of £91m and has gone from success to success since; his highpoint coming in the Champions League final, where he scored a phenomenal bicycle kick to break Liverpool hearts.

Modric, meanwhile, quit the Lilywhites a year earlier and is now fresh off the back of his best campaign – the 33-year-old won the Ballon d’Or and reached the World Cup final with Croatia.

With Premier League rivals United and Chelsea also joined by European giants Bayern Munich and PSG in the race for Eriksen, Spurs still have to pull it out the bag if they want to keep the maestro in white, but the news that Madrid have been put off is nevertheless a huge boost.

Folarin Balogun has lift off at Monaco! USMNT star comes off bench to open scoring account – but Lorient snatch draw with last-gasp equaliser

Folarin Balogun looked like being the match-winner for Monaco after coming off the bench and scoring but Lorient hit back in stoppage time.

Balogun started on benchCame on in second halfScored within minutes of arrivalGettyWHAT HAPPENED?

Balogun again started on the bench for Monaco but arrived in the 65th minute as a substitute for Wissam Ben Yedder with the game level at 1-1. The USMNT star wasted little time making an impact as he fired Monaco ahead just three minutes after his introduction. Balogun received the ball in the penalty area, turned smartly and fired a powerful left-footed shot past goalkeeper Yvon Mvogo at his near post. The strike looked like being the winner for Monaco until Romain Favre made it 2-2 in the last seconds of stoppage time.

The goal is Balogun's first since he moved to Monaco from Arsenal in the summer transfer window, and he will be hoping he can now kick on and replicate last season's impressive goalscoring form in Ligue 1 with Reims. It's Balogun's second in two games as he was also on target over the international break in a 4-0 friendly win over Oman with the United States.

Getty/GOALUSMNT IMPACT

USMNT boss Gregg Berhalter will no doubt be thrilled to see Balogun open his Monaco account. Berhalter has already described his decision to join the Ligue 1 club as a "fabulous move" as the forward is so familiar with the French top flight. Balogun's goal comes on a weekend when USMNT strike partner Ricardo Pepi was also on target. Pepi scored a penalty in a 4-0 win over PSV over NEC in the Eredivisie.

GOAL'S RATING

Folarin Balogun (7/10):

Made an instant impact by scoring just minutes after coming off the bench. Looked razor sharp when he picked up possession and showed his striker's instinct by going straight for goal. You suspect Lorient won't be too happy to see their goalkeeper concede at his near post but the power on Balogun's shot saw the ball fly past Mvogo. Also had the ball in the net again late on but saw his effort ruled out for offside.

Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou is thrilled with his sides' 'tremendous resilience' as they sit atop the Premier League table

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou has been amazed by the "resilience" his team has shown on their way to the top of the Premier League.

Spurs impressing under PostecoglouSit top of Premier League and unbeatenCoach still sees room for improvementWHAT HAPPENED?

The Australian has spearheaded a fantastic turnaround since taking over as Tottenham coach in the summer. After eight matches, his side sit top of the table – ahead of Arsenal on goals scored – and remain unbeaten in the league.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesTHE BIGGER PICTURE

After finishing eighth in the Premier League last season, Spurs have managed their climb to the peak of the table despite losing star striker Harry Kane to Bayern Munich before the current campaign kicked off.

Captain Son Heung-min along with summer signings James Maddison, Micky van de Ven and Pedro Porro have helped cover for the loss of the talisman and strengthen Postecoglou's side and he is happy with their progress.

WHAT THEY SAID or DID YOU KNOW? (delete as applicable)

However, he says there is still room for improvement, particularly in attack, as he told : "When you talk about a transformation, we have a lot of new players in, a new manager, a new way of playing, that kind of shift is always going to take some time. To be honest, that part our game is still the area that has the most improvement in it, the attacking side of our game – we can be even more aggressive in the way we play and create even more opportunities.

"But I would balance that up in the tremendous resilience we've shown and the defensive solidity we've had considering we've had a totally new back line and a new midfield set-up. So it's kind of a balancing act these things of wanting to be this kind of team, but also understanding you have to build some other aspects of the side.

"At the moment we are juggling that pretty well, but I still think when we become the team I want us to become, that is the area we still have the most improving to do in – the attacking areas."

Spurs will hope to preserve their unbeaten start to the Premier League campaign when they take on Fulham on Monday.

Manchester City player ratings vs Brighton: Erling Haaland malfunctions as sublime Seagulls push champions all the way

City were put to the test by Roberto De Zerbi's high-flying Seagulls and were fortunate to come away with a draw, despite almost snatching victory.

Manchester City's 12-game winning streak in the Premier League came to a halt against an inspired Brighton side who gave the champions their biggest scare of 2023 in an entertaining 1-1 draw.

Pep Guardiola fielded a stronger team than in Sunday's 1-0 win over Chelsea but still experimented, including playing Rodri at centre-back – a move which just gave more control to Roberto De Zerbi's slick and ambitious Seagulls.

Phil Foden gave City the lead after two big misses by Erling Haaland, but a stunning effort from Julio Encisco pulled Brighton level. The hosts dominated the second half but City thought they had found a winner through Haaland's header, but that was eventually ruled out for a foul following a VAR review.

Brighton celebrated wildly at full-time as they clinched their place in the Europa League while City dropped points for the first time since their 1-1 draw at Nottingham Forest on February 18.

GOAL rates Man City's players from the Amex Stadium…

Getty Goalkeeper & Defence

Stefan Ortega (7/10):

Kept busy by Brighton's onslaughts and had to make six saves. Also put under pressure when on the ball but coped with it well.

Kyle Walker (5/10):

Struggled at times to cope with Kaoru Mitoma and not as able to put out fires as usual.

John Stones (6/10):

Put under a lot of pressure and did not always cope well with it.

Rodri (5/10):

Played in the unusual role of centre-back, which he has played for Spain. But his performance suggests he is much more useful in the middle of the pitch than at the back.

Rico Lewis (7/10):

Showcased his technical skills and got forward a lot.

AdvertisementMidfield

Kevin De Bruyne (5/10):

Never got going in the game and was taken off in the 57th minute.

Bernardo Silva (5/10):

Struggled to anchor the team like Rodri usually does and had to resort to tactical fouls to stop Brighton in their tracks.

Ilkay Gundogan (6/10):

Contributed to some of City's best moments, especially in the first half.

Getty Attack

Riyad Mahrez (7/10):

Played an exquisite through ball to release Haaland for the goal.

Erling Haaland (6/10):

Missed two clear chances in the first half – a free header and a one-on-one. Made amends by setting up Foden for the goal and had a header ruled out in the second period for a foul.

Phil Foden (8/10):

Built on his performance against Chelsea with another lively and effective performance. Was City's biggest threat until he was brought off in the 51st minute and fully deserved his goal.

Subs & Manager

Cole Palmer (7/10):

Picked up where Foden left off and had a lot of joy down the left wing, crossing for Haaland to score the goal that was ruled out.

Julian Alvarez (6/10):

An improvement on De Bruyne and Brighton had to foul him on a few occasions to stop him doing damage.

Kalvin Phillips (N/A):

Only introduced for the final six minutes.

Sergio Gomez (N/A):

Came on with Phillips.

Pep Guardiola (5/10):

Had the opportunity to experiment but playing Rodri at centre-back did not go well. He should avoid making the same mistake in either of the finals.

Europa Conference League joy for West Ham on another shameful night for football: Winners and losers as bloodied Cristiano Biraghi sours Irons' famous win over Fiorentina

David Moyes' side won a first major European trophy since 1965 by beating La Viola 2-1 in Prague thanks to a 90th-minute winner from Jarrod Bowen

A week after Roma and Sevilla's toxic clash in Budapest came an even uglier spectacle in Prague, with West Ham beating Fiorentina in a Europa Conference League final completely overshadowed by the shocking behaviour of both clubs' fans.

There were arrests before the game, while Cristiano Biraghi was left bloodied during it, after being hit by a plastic beer cup thrown from the West Ham end. Just like last Wednesday's Europa League final, the fallout from this final will not be pretty.

At least the game in Hungary had produced the right victor, with the far more attack-minded Sevilla prevailing on penalties. In Czech Republic, West Ham came out on top despite being outplayed for the majority of the game.

Ultimately, though, Fiorentina could only have themselves to blame for failing to seal the deal. The handball decision that went against Biraghi may have been harsh, but they should have gone on to win the match after deservedly drawing level through Giacomo Bonaventura.

As it was, they conceded a late winner to Jarrod Bowen, who sparked wild scenes of celebrations in front of the same supporters who had split Biraghi open during the first half.

GOAL runs through the winners and losers from another European final that left a bitter taste in the mouth…

Getty ImagesWINNER: Jarrod Bowen

Just like West Ham, Bowen's not had a particularly good season overall. Let's not forget, he was being linked with Liverpool after an excellent 2021-22 campaign. There has been no such talk this summer. Yet Bowen remains a very dangerous winger, as he proved in such decisive fashion in Prague.

It was he who forced the penalty from which West Ham opened the scoring and, far more importantly, it was he who won the cup with a left-footed finish after the most perfectly timed run in behind the Fiorentina defence in the 90th minute.

So, it's been one hell of a finish to the season for Bowen. He had twins with Dani Dyer, the daughter of actor and die-hard West Ham fan, Danny, a few weeks ago and now he's delivered the Conference League trophy – fair to say he's just become a Hammers legend for life!

AdvertisementGetty ImagesLOSER: Luka Jovic

There was a time when Luka Jovic looked like he was going to become one of the best strikers in the world. Real Madrid didn't buy him on a whim, after all. They paid €60m for the Serb in the summer of 2019, after Jovic had lit up the Europa League with Eintracht Frankfurt, and scored 27 times in all competitions.

Sad to say, he's now looking like something of a one-season wonder. We've seen flashes of quality since he brought his Madrid nightmare to an end in January of last year by joining Fiorentina, initially on loan. But it was actually a shock that he started the final ahead of Arthur Cabral, who has not only scored more goals this season, but also worked far harder.

In that context, it was not in the least bit surprising to see Jovic hauled off at half-time in Prague. He may have had a goal disallowed in injury-time at the end of the first half, but he had contributed absolutely nothing to the cause in the preceding 45 minutes and was one of the main reasons why Fiorentina had failed to turn their possession into actual chances.

Getty ImagesWINNER: David Moyes

The sight of David Moyes joyously jumping up and down on the pitch should have brought a smile to the face of every neutral. Seriously, who could begrudge the Scot his first European honour? Beppe Bergomi pointed out that "West Ham are not a team that really plays football" but Moyes won't care. He's been through so much – even just this season alone, with his job in doubt after a dreadful campaign in which West Ham flirted with relegation.

It's still by no means certain that he will still be at the helm next season, of course. He could yet be sacked, which is why he's presently being linked with the current vacancy at Celtic. However, no matter what happens next, he's now got a major trophy to his name.

Just under a decade after being humiliatingly sacked only seven months into his dream job at Manchester United, Moyes' reputation as a good manager has finally been restored.

LOSER: Diving

Because there's so much on the line, finals bring out the best in players – but also the worst. They will essentially do whatever it takes to win, and while that can mean putting one's body on the line for the good of the team, it also often results in the most shameful displays of simulation you're ever likely to see.

Honestly, it seemed highly unlikely that anyone in Prague could 'better' Lorenzo Pellegrini's dive in Budapest last week, with the Roma ace throwing himself to the ground roughly 10 minutes after deliberately making contact with an opponent's outstretched leg. Therefore, enormous credit must go to Said Benrahma for a dive so poor, so obvious, so stupid (he was actually in a shooting position at the time) and so absurd, that it actually provoked laughter among the commentary team on .

It's a serious problem, though, and one that the game's lawmakers remain mystifyingly reluctant to resolve. Because the solution is still obvious: don't let them away with just booking; make simulation a red-card offence.

And if any offences are missed by referees during games – which often happens because most divers are far more skilled than Benrahma – the culprits should be hit with retrospective bans. At this stage, it's the only way to rid 'The Beautiful Game' of one of its ugliest issues.

De Jong, Barella, Bellingham: Midfielders Liverpool could sign in this transfer window

It's going to be an interesting week!

Now that Jurgen Klopp has stated that Liverpool need a midfielder before the transfer window closes, his scouting department will have provided a list of targets who fit the profile of age, suitability to the playing style, and potential availability.

GOAL have cast our eye across some midfielders, and their numbers, who Liverpool could sign before next Thursday.

Getty ImagesFrenkie de Jong – Barcelona

Now that Manchester United have bought Casemiro and continue to pursue Antony, and Chelsea seem set to go deep for Anthony Gordon, a move for de Jong suddenly doesn't as far fetched as it did last week. An expert passer, who is brilliant at driving the ball forward and excellent at winning it back – Xavi has even deployed him as a centre-back in recent weeks because of this ability.

It is believed a fee of around £72 million could secure a player Barcelona are happy to let go to find their curious rebuild. Liverpool have a good relationship with the club and can offer the Champions League football he craves.

Now this is probably a transfer saga for next summer, but there is always a chance that Liverpool could pull the trigger this season. He was recently named in 10-man shortlist for the 2022 Kopa Trophy, the best player under the age of 21 and in March was named NXGN's player of the year.

Bellingham has regularly performed in the big games. When Manchester City visited the Signal Indua Park in 2021, he showed what he was made of with a wonderfully taken goal to put Dortmund in the lead, and he showed his ability to be a leader during his post-match interview after Dortmund lost 4-2 to Rangers. He spoke like a player far beyond his years, and showed he is not scared of letting people know how he feels.

The Croatian international is the type of midfielder that would fit the profile on Merseyside, known for his passing, tackling, intelligent running and stamina. He can play at the base of midfield as well as box-to-box and his versatility could be key.

Last term he was named as Serie A midfielder of the season. Brozovic was close to leaving Inter in 2018 before manager at the time Luciano Spalletti chose to play him deeper in a match vs Napoli, a role in which he excelled. Since then he has been a mainstay in the Inter squad, and has performed consistently at an extremely high level.
