Starc 10 for 60; New South Wales make it two from two

The home side wrapped up an eight-wicket victory to maintain a strong start to the Sheffield Shield

New South Wales maintained the early running in the Sheffield Shield with an eight-wicket victory against Tasmania to make it two wins on the bounce on the back of Mitchell Starc’s match haul of 10 for 60.It did not take Starc long to nab the final wicket as he speared one into Lawrence Neil-Smith’s off stump to finish with 5 for 20 to follow 5 for 40 in the first innings. After a slow start in the opening Shield match against Queensland last week, where he took 1 for 129 at the Gabba, Starc was impressive on a slow Drummoyne Oval pitch where his ability to find movement at pace with the old ball made him the difference. He will shortly move into T20I mode with Australia for the six matches against Sri Lanka and Pakistan before the potential of one more Shield outing before the first Test against Pakistan at the Gabba. This performance will leave him firmly in the mix for a starting spot in that match after he played just once during the Ashes. Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood are locked in, along with Nathan Lyon, which leaves one pace-bowling spot up for grabs. It is probably between Starc and James Pattinson with Peter Siddle and Michael Neser outside chances.Starc’s performance left New South Wales needing 45 and the openers got them almost there with Daniel Hughes timing the ball sweetly before he was lbw to Alex Pyecroft.Pyecroft then had the satisfaction of trapping Steven Smith lbw for 2 when he walked across the crease and missed a straight delivery leaving Moises Henriques – who helped set up the victory with his 124 – to secure the win by clipping his first ball for four. David Warner finished unbeaten on 15.

Weatherald and Carey lay platform for South Australia's lead

A vital ninth-wicket stand of 73 between Joe Mennie and Nick Winter secured a handy advantage

Tasmania 254 and 1 for 6 trail South Australia 346 (Weatherald 126, Carey 73, Bird 4-70) by 86 runsJake Weatherald’s second century of the season against Tasmania, a commanding innings from Alex Carey and useful lower-order runs put South Australia in control as they hunt that elusive Sheffield Shield victory.Weatherald, who scored a career-best 198 when the sides last met, and Carey added 128 for the fourth wicket after South Australia had lost 3 for 8 to slip to 3 for 57 in the morning session.Carey, who struck 11 boundaries, looked set for a century before being well held at second slip when he drove at Riley Meredith. When Weatherald’s fine innings was ended, lbw to Jackson Bird, and Chadd Sayers followed to the same bowler, South Australia were 8 for 263 – a lead of just nine – before Nick Winter and Joe Mennie added 73 for the ninth wicket. Mennie was last-man out for 49.With four overs to bowl, South Australia’s day ended on a high when Winter trapped Alex Doolan lbw with the last ball of the day. However, although the opener wasn’t playing a shot the decision looked dubious.

Arsenal flop is now unemployed after suffering 2 relegations since leaving

Arsenal are a club on the up at the moment; of that, there can be no doubt.

Mikel Arteta and Edu Gaspar have overseen a dramatic turnaround in the Gunners' fortunes, much of which has been due to brilliant signings like Martin Odegaard, Gabriel Martinelli, and mega-money £105m signing Declan Rice.

However, it wasn't that long ago that the club were making regular blunders in the transfer market, and there is perhaps none more glaring than Shkodran Mustafi.

Shkodran Mustafi's career at Arsenal

Arsenal spent £35m to sign Mustafi from La Liga outfit Valencia in August 2016 off the back of two impressive seasons from the then-24-year-old, and it was a move that clearly pleased then manager Arsène Wenger as he said:

"He is at the right age. He has good experience. He is a very focused player who can play with the ball as well. We have taken a great player but have prepared well for the future."

Unfortunately for both player and manager, this description of the Bad Hersfeld-born defender was never seen by the fans in England. Instead, they saw a player who was a consistent concern at the back for the majority of his tenure in north London.

Arsenal 2-1 Southampton: September 2016

GK – Petr Cech

RB – Hector Bellerin

CB – Shkodran Mustafi

CB – Laurent Koscielny

LB – Nacho Monreal

DM- Francis Coquelin

LM – Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain

CAM – Mesut Ozil

RM – Theo Walcott

ST – Lucas Perez

In March 2019, just two and a half years into his time at the Emirates, the German was labelled the "King of the blunders" by former Arsenal and Chelsea midfielder Emmanuel Petit, who had seen enough of his calamitous defending by that point.

The Frenchman wasn't alone in his criticism of the former Valencia man, either. Just a month later, Arsenal legend Martin Keown took aim following a dreadful display against Crystal Palace, proclaiming, "It's schoolboy defending" after a horrific mix-up between defender and goalkeeper.

In all, the German international somehow made 151 appearances for the Gunners across his four and a half years at the club, in which he earned around £90k-per-week, meaning that he cost the club around £56m in total.

While his time as an Arsenal player certainly wasn't as bad as some might make it out, the fact that he was earning the same wage that Leandro Trossard earns now is a testament to how much the club has changed in the last few years.

That said, how did Mustafi get on after leaving Arsenal?

Shkodran Mustafi's post-Arsenal career

The 6-foot centre-back joined Bundesliga outfit Schalke in February 2021 after the Gunners agreed to terminate his contract six months early, with it clear that he had no future in London.

What could, and perhaps should, have been a fresh start for the then-28-year-old titan quickly deteriorated into another nightmare as, in his 13 appearances, the club were relegated for the first time since 1988, and so, rather unsurprisingly, the short-term deal he signed was not renewed.

The next step in his career saw the German return to Valencia, but this time to play for fierce rivals Levante.

Unfortunately, this was another move that went poorly. In his first season with the club, he made just 11 appearances due to injury and faced his second relegation in as many years as the team finished 19th. The following season was just as bad, as injury limited him to just three appearances in total.

After two years with Los Granotas, the 20-capped international was released last summer.

As things stand, he is still without a club, although last month, there were links to Serie A side Salernitana, so he might just be back in action before the end of the season.

The Strikers are looking to bounce back from a poor season and all eyes will be on AB de Villiers when he joins the Heat

Ben Laughlin, a long-time part of the Strikers attack, has moved to the Brisbane Heat for family reasons, with Harry Conway coming into the squad. Cameron White, in what is likely to be the final fling of his career, brings winning experience from the Melbourne Renegades.Australia impactHead and possibly Michael Neser will be featuring in the Test side until early January, and Alex Carey will be lost to the ODI tour India mid-tournament. There is a chance that if Neser remains in the Test squad he could be released for BBL duty if not needed against New Zealand.Player to watchWes Agar has been bowling very well in Marsh Cup and Sheffield Shield cricket this season and, after just two matches for the Strikers last summer, could get greater opportunity in this campaign particularly with the departure of Laughlin and if Neser is on Australia duty.Key stat (Gaurav Sundararaman)Rashid Khan’s form might have dipped in other T20s and ODIs in 2019 but his performance in the Big Bash is extraordinary. In the last two seasons, Rashid has taken 37 wickets at an economy rate of 5.93 and 45% of his deliveries are dots.AB de Villiers unleashes while down on one knee•Getty Images

Their much-vaunted top order made a lot of bright starts but fizzled out quickly and the order was chopped and changed throughout the tournament. They saved their best work for the last two games with two magnificent chases but it was too little too late. What’s changed for the season?A new coach and a few new bash brothers. Darren Lehmann, who led the Heat to the title in BBL02, takes charge again after Daniel Vettori stepped down. The signing of AB de Villiers and Tom Banton made a huge stir. They will play half the tournament each with de Villiers available for the finals. The Heat have the best batting line-up in the BBL but historically the best bowling teams have won the tournament and they will need to bowl well. Laughlin’s return to Queensland from the Strikers having won a title in Adelaide is a nice addition.Australia impactJames Pattinson’s availability early in the tournament is subject to his Test duties but he could play more games than the Heat had planned for, given the form of Australia’s incumbent Test quicks. Joe Burns and Marnus Labuschagne will be unavailable in the early part of the tournament but both may even struggle to get a game for the Heat given the batting depth. It is unlikely many Heat players will head to India with the ODI team, although Labuschagne was named joint player of the Marsh Cup and Australia may want to look at him in a second format if they experiment with the side.Player to watchMax Bryant is the obvious choice. He has so much potential but capitalising on starts and finding consistency as a young player is his biggest challenge. He has had a lean season in 50-over cricket for Queensland but a couple of early scores in the BBL and he could go have a huge tournament.Key stat (Gaurav Sundararaman)Tom Banton comes into this competition with very high expectations. Out of the 41 players to have faced 200 balls in powerplays in 2019, Banton has the best strike rate of 160. He scores big and at a brisk pace. The Gabba pitch could be perfect for Banton to showcase his skills.

Leeds were rinsed by Bielsa signing who earned double Summerville’s wage

Leeds United will be aiming to pick up yet another Championship win this calendar year when they travel to Coventry City, knowing that first-team stars such Crysencio Summerville will have to play to the peak of their powers to get the better of the Sky Blues.

The hosts will still have aspirations about breaking into the playoff picture with six games of the whirlwind regular campaign left to tick off, with Mark Robins hoping his side can spoil Leeds' high spirits at the CBS Arena.

Staggeringly only on £15k-per-week, according to Capology, the dynamic Dutchman will surely hope his wages get a boost at the end of the season even if his team don't end up winning promotion.

Leeds will be wary about handing out excessive pay packets, however, regardless of Summerville's 18 goals this season, remembering how costly former flop Helder Costa became.

summerville-leeds-premier-league-everton-transfers

Helder Costa's wage at Leeds

Costa wasn't instantly seen as a misfire when he first entered Elland Road, having amassed four goals and six assists during his debut season under Marcelo Bielsa in the Championship.

It was the step-up to the Premier League that saw the Angolan talent's significance to the Whites first-team start to wane, going on to make 23 appearances over the next two seasons – with six goals and assists for his troubles – before being offloaded for good at the start of this campaign.

Having been loaned out twice to Valencia and Al-Itthiad in recent years to get freshness into his legs, the former Wolverhampton Wanderers man was put out of his misery as a Leeds player finally by Farke last October when he was released from his contract.

There would have been some relief that the high earner was off the wage bill too, with Costa raking in £32.5k-per-week for the Whites as recently as the 2020/21 season.

That was remarkably £2.5k-per-week more than Kalvin Phillips at the time, and looking at the present state of affairs in the Leeds camp, Costa was earning double that of Summerville.

Helder Costa's wage compared to the current Leeds squad

Summerville has staggeringly bettered Costa's entire numbers at Elland Road this season alone already, onto 27 goals and assists from 40 games compared to Costa's weak 19 goals and assists from 71 appearances.

Regardless, Costa ended up earning more than double what the standout Leeds ten earns now even when he ended up featuring just 22 times for Bielsa's side during the 2020/21 campaign.

Moreover, glancing over the extensive Whites wage bill now, Costa would find himself earning more than other regular first-team stars such as Illan Meslier, Wilfried Gnonto and Glen Kamara – and not just Summerville.

Described as being "frustrating" by ex-Leeds player Noel Whelan when the 30-year-old winger was loaned out to Spain, the Angolan attacker now finds himself without a club and is nearing towards the end of his bumpy career.

Leeds' highest earners – 2023/24

1. Patrick Bamford

£70k per week

2. Georginio Rutter

£70k per week

3. Junior Firpo

£60k per week

4. Daniel James

£50k per week

5. Pascal Struijk

£50k per week

Sourced by Capology

His excessive wage wouldn't see him quite break into the top five earners at Elland Road at the moment, but there's no doubt some regret on Leeds' end about the fact they splashed £16m on Costa and ended up giving him a handsome salary for so long.

Costa might well even consider hanging up his boots soon if he can't regain his mojo when a new club comes calling, whilst Leeds continue to go from strength to strength with Summerville integral to their promotion chances.
