Need to grow cricket outside of India – Cricket Australia chief

Kevin Roberts also said that New Zealand would not have to wait another 32 years to play a Boxing Day Test in Melbourne

Kevin Roberts, the Cricket Australia chief executive, has pledged New Zealand will be granted more frequent Boxing Day Tests as he acknowledged that the game’s financial powerhouses needed to work together to ensure that it grows healthier outside the cricket super economies of India, England and Australia.Responding to the BCCI president Sourav Ganguly’s suggestion for a “Super Series” in which India, England and Australia would play a tournament amongst themselves, Roberts termed the idea “innovative”. But he was careful to stress that all nations needed to be given opportunities for quality cricket and chances to raise revenue, amid widespread dismay that such a concept might be allowed to get off the ground given the parlous state of so many other nations’ finances.New Zealand Cricket (NZC) is struggling to find sufficient and consistent revenue streams in the face of three consecutive years of financial losses, while elsewhere Ireland has been forced to cancel a raft of fixtures due to cost pressures. The scheduling of a “Super Series” rather than the extra ICC events proposed by its chief executive Manu Sawhney would not only overturn the current cricket calendar but place further pressure on the already stretched finances of most ICC member countries.”I think it’s an example of the innovative thinking coming out of the BCCI with Sourav Ganguly as president,” Roberts said. “In his very short time, only a couple of months, we have already seen India commit to and host a day-night Test in Kolkata, so a brilliant result there. And now a suggestion around the Super Series, another potential innovation. We will be in India next month and Bangladesh talking about the future cricket calendar. We’re in discussions with New Zealand as well and I was recently in Pakistan talking about the importance of our future partnership with Pakistan.”We’re really respectful of the importance of our international cricket relationships and our role as a leader in world cricket in supporting the development of cricket in other countries. We’re really looking forward to hosting Afghanistan next year and that is an example of our commitment to world cricket. We have discussions with all member nations of the ICC and take really seriously our role to partner them and working together with them to grow the game.”We’re just trying to be a good proactive partner to both the ICC and its members. Cricket is part of the fabric of Australian culture and we’ve got to play our part to make sure it remains and become an even stronger part of other countries around the world. Cricket is more or less a religion on the sub-continent. It’s absolutely the favourite sport in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. We’ve got to try and make sure we see the game emerging in countries all around the world.”Tony Irish, the FICA executive chairman, has stated bluntly that any push for more bilateral cricket than is already scheduled between India, England and Australia would only serve to grow the yawning gaps that exist between rich and poor. “The mooted super series is a real concern for the global game. It is likely to further open the gap between the rich and the poorer countries in international cricket,” Irish told ESPNcricinfo.”FICA has maintained for some time now that two key issues to be addressed for the future of international cricket are a) a more coherent global schedule, and b) more equitable global game economics. This proposed new event does not assist in either of those.”Asked whether New Zealand would have to wait another 32 years for another appearance on Boxing Day, Roberts was quick to assure Australia’s Trans-Tasman neighbours that a crowd of more than 80,000 of Boxing Day at the MCG would help ensure that the fixture would become a far more regular occurrence. He also stated that the MCG would keep the Boxing Day Test for the foreseeable future, as CA negotiates a new stadium deal with the Melbourne Cricket Club.”We really value the partnership with New Zealand. We are already having some high-level discussions around the cricket calendar from 2023 to 2031 and we absolutely hope and look forward to hosting New Zealand at a Boxing Day Test well before another 32 years pass,” Roberts said. “They are a really important partner and nation in the world of cricket.”The reality is there is only one venue in Australia that can host over 80,000 people on Boxing Day as the MCG did yesterday. It was just a picture. That’s something we are really grateful for and respect. The MCG Test is one of the two most iconic Tests on the planet, along with the Lord’s Test.”You would have to say that, given this is the equivalent of two AFL grand finals, as MCC CEO Stuart Fox was quoted as saying that the other day, that indicates the importance of it, not just in Victoria but in communities beyond Australia. Given the importance of the MCG Test to world cricket, I would like to think it will remain here in perpetuity. There is a bit of work to be done on that front. But you would have to say it is best for world cricket to have a Boxing Day Test in Melbourne for years to come.”

Everton wasted £28m on Ancelotti signing who hurt their PSR hopes

Everton have made some questionable decisions with transfers over the last few years, which is one of the reasons the club have found themselves in hot water with the Premier League.

The Toffees have been hit with multiple points deductions this campaign, with Sean Dyche's side accumulating eight points for multiple breaches of PSR and FFP.

Everton's home stadium, Goodison Park.

Signings of players such as Jean-Philippe Gbamin and Yerry Mina cost the club over £50m, with the duo both departing Goodison Park on free transfers upon the end of their contracts.

However, the club can add another player to their list of talents who have failed to replicate their best form at the club, after he departed the Toffees a couple of years ago after an unsuccessful stint at the club.

Allan's stats at Everton

After arriving at Goodison Park for £21m during the summer of 2020, Brazilian midfielder Allan had high expectations of succeeding after his impressive five-year stint at Napoli.

He made 24 appearances in the 2020/21 Premier League campaign, starting all but one of Everton's first 13 matches of the campaign. However, a muscle issue would see him miss all of January and February before returning in March and enjoying another permanent place in the starting lineup.

Allan would keep his starting role throughout the following campaign, under the guidance of Rafa Benitez and Frank Lampard. The Brazilian would be a mainstay under the Spaniard but would fall down the pecking order under the former Chelsea boss.

He only started nine games under the Chelsea legend, before not playing in four of the five remaining Premier League games during the 2021/22 season.

His lack of minutes would see him depart Goodison during the summer of 2022, with the club doing a brilliant job of offloading the midfielder given his hefty weekly wage of £70k-per-week – equating to roughly £7.2m in total across the two seasons, as per Capology.

Allan's wage in 2024

Allan – who cost Everton around £28m when combining his total salary and initial transfer fee – departed the club for a move to the United Arab Emirates side Al Wahda for an undisclosed fee to play regular football after a stop-start period under Lampard.

He's since managed to appear 50 times for the club in just over 18 months, with the 33-year-old finding form in front of goal, scoring three times and creating four assists in 18 matches this campaign.

The Brazilian still earns a whopping £86k-per-week as per Salary Sport, with Everton having needed to shift his huge weekly earnings to create some wriggle room in their battle to comply with PSR rules.

Despite his immediate impact on the first-team squad, the club did the right thing by offloading the ageing talent, with the one-time Napoli man notably dubbed an "imposter" due to his dismal displays away from Goodison – as per broadcaster David Downie.

Also branded as a figure who "can't run" by talkSPORT pundit Harry Redknapp – while once also completing just two passes in 73 minutes of a Merseyside derby – Allan was certainly an unwanted and unneeded drain for those on Merseyside.

The Toffees arguably now have much better options in the middle of the park, thankfully, with the likes of Amadou Onana and James Garner far more influential than the veteran midfielder ever was.

Everton may have to sell "magnificent" ace to avoid further PSR woes

The club could still yet receive a further punishment.

Chelsea must now unleash their "10/10 talent" over Enzo Fernandez

The 2023/24 season has not been easy for Chelsea. Under new manager Mauricio Pochettino, the Blues have limped to ninth place in the Premier League, on 44 points. Whilst they have games in hand, they are currently a massive 16 points off fifth place, a potential Champions League spot.

According to Goal.com, Chelsea have spent an incredible £1b under the ownership of Todd Boehly. This includes smashing the Premier League’s record transfer twice, first signing Enzo Fernandez for £107m in January 2023, before their signing of Moises Caicedo for a fee of £115m last summer broke the record again.

Aside from Fernandez and Caicedo, some of Chelsea’s big-money signings include the likes of Raheem Sterling, who cost the Blues £50m from Manchester City, and French attacker Christopher Nkunku, from RB Leipzig, for £52.

However, there is one particular signing made by Chelsea who is slipping under the radar. The deal, completed in August 2022, saw Chelsea sign one of the best young talents in the Premier League and that certain someone could now finally step up following an injury to Fernandez.

The Argentine has displayed signs of his immense potential since arriving in England but is now nursing a knock which requires medical assessment ahead of their clash with Everton on Monday night.

A move that slipped under the radar

The man in question here is the former Aston Villa midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka, for whom Chelsea paid the Villans just £20m to acquire his services. Chukwuemeka, who was 18 years old when he joined the club, agreed to sign a six-year contract at Chelsea.

Former Aston Villa midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka.

It was an impressive deal for the Blues to conduct, not least because they brought in one of the most exciting English midfield talents for a relatively small price considering the state of the modern-day transfer market.

Chelsea beat some of Europe’s top clubs to sign Chukwuemeka, including Barcelona and Borussia Dortmund, with London rivals Arsenal also rumoured to be interested at the time, according to Rob Dorsett of Sky Sports.

Chukwuemeka made 16 appearances for Aston Villa before departing for London in 2022, and he has already made 26 for Chelsea.

Why Chelsea must now unleash Chukwuemeka

Austrian-born Chukwuemeka has struggled with injuries during his time at Stamford Bridge so far, including a recurring knee injury he originally picked up against West Ham towards the start of the season, yet there is no doubt he is an exceptional talent.

This season, in his 26 appearances, the 20-year-old has scored twice, in the Premier League against West Ham and the FA Cup against Leicester, as well as picking up an assist in the Premier League against Liverpool.

Chelsea midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka.

He is superb between the lines, an attacking midfielder who loves to get on the ball and make things happen in the final third, where he averages 30.9 touches in the Premier League this season, as per Fbref.

Chukwuemeka is a progressive midfield player, whose first thought is always to look forwards. According to Fbref, only Cole Palmer averages more passes into the penalty area per 90 for Chelsea in the Premier League, with 2.62, just bettering Chukwuemeka’s 2.61.

The 20-year-old is a superb dribbler and despite his lanky 6 foot 1 frame, can slalom in and out of defenders with impressive agility.

Where Chukwuemeka excels most is in pockets of space between the lines, where he receives the ball on the half-turn, before turning and looking to progress Chelsea forward. This is largely a profile Chelsea have lacked this season, especially with constant injuries for Nkunku.

Back in 2020, Chukwuemeka was described as an “absolute 10/10 talent” by scout Jacek Kulig. Now, as he becomes more experienced as a professional footballer, that “10/10 talent” is looking to cement down a place in the Blues’ starting XI.

With injuries to star men disrupting Chelsea’s season, perhaps, now fully fit again, Chukwuemeka is the man to come into their team and make a place in the midfield his own.

The ever-improving Fernandez looks to be injured ahead of Chelsea’s next game against Everton and should the young Chelsea star be handed a start against the Toffees instead, he has a real chance to make a big impact on Pochettino’s side, and potentially secure a starting spot for the rest of the season.

Phil Salt and Wes Agar lift Adelaide Strikers back to second

Liam Livingstone again shone, but the Perth Scorchers face a battle to secure a spot in the finals

Report by Andrew McGlashan24-Jan-2020

Phil Salt have Adelaide Strikers a rapid start•Getty Images

The Adelaide Strikers went back up to second in the BBL table, in a tight tussle for the second-chance place in the Qualifier, with a solid all-round display against the Perth Scorchers as Liam Livingstone’s six-hitting display was not enough to lift a lethargic effort by the rest of the order. When Phil Salt, with 31-ball 59, was cutting loose the Strikers were well placed to touch 200 but the Scorchers came back well in the second half of the innings and their final total was only considered around par on a good batting strip.Crucially, though, they did not allow the Scorchers to race away in the chase – despite the best efforts of Livingstone – and the asking rate escalated into double figures. With the Strikers chipping away, Livingstone’s presence became ever-more vital and the game was up when he fell to Wes Agar. The result leaves the Strikers vying with the Sydney Sixers for second place the Scorchers in the mid-table squeeze for fourth or fifth place.Powering awayThe ball came onto the bat nice in the early overs with Salt and Jake Weatherald taking advantange. Salt was given an early life on 4 when Ashton Agar couldn’t reel in a tough chance over his shoulder running from backward point. It was Weatherald who initially found a higher gear – after his labored innings in the previous match against the Melbourne Stars – when he took Chris Jordan’s first three balls for 14. Even though the last over of the powerplay, bowled by Mitchell Marsh, only went for 4 the Strikers were 0 for 60. The ball after Weatherald clobbered Agar into the deep, Salt deposited the same bowler over long-on and soon reached his half-century off 27 balls. With more than half the innings remaining there was a chance for Salt to make a really big score, but he charged and missed at Agar and from there things became tougher for the Strikes.Second-half stallTravis Head and Alex Carey consolidated nicely for their third-wicket was the stand of 42 came off 27 balls – including 19 off Marsh’s second over – until Carey fell to Jordan’s short ball. At that point the Strikers were 2 for 139 in 14.2 overs and, with a fair wind, could still have pushed 200. However, they fell well short of that as the remaining 34 balls brought just 42 runs. Although Head struck two sixes he could not quite increase his tempo before falling at the start of the final over. None of the last five overs went for double figures as Jordan, Jhye Richardson and Matt Kelly all finishes strongly. As a side note, Ashton Turner’s one over – the 13th – was his first in professional cricket for more than a year.Livingstone threatens but Strikers squeezeThe Liam Livingstone-Josh Inglis pairing has been the most dominant opening partnership of the season. They did not get going as a duo this time, with Inglis finding mid-off against Wes Agar, but Livingstone – who continued to take some painful blows around the body – again played impressively. He opened his sixes account with a monstrous 106-metre blow over long-on against Michael Neser and twice deposited Head over the rope when the Strikers captain gambled on bowling himself again inside the powerplay. It was tougher work at the other end, however, leaving a lot on Livingstone’s shoulders. Kurtis Patterson struck two boundaries in his first four balls but managed just nine off his next 11 before edging the rapid Billy Stanlake.Agar the man (again)Few players have shown as much improvement from one season to another – across all formats – as Wes Agar for South Australia and the Strikers. After a career-best 4 for 33 two games ago against the Hurricanes he was a key weapon again with 3 for 36. Having claimed Inglis in the powerplay he returned to make huge blows to the middle order – Marsh hooked to long leg and then, in a match-defining moment, Livingstone found deep midwicket as he attempted his eighth six. Between those dismissals, Carey produced a magnificent running and diving catch to hold Turner’s scoop. It felt like it was all on Livingstone. When he went, so did the Scorchers’ hopes.

India 'were caught napping' by New Zealand – VVS Laxman

India’s top order, which has been a long time strength, did not fare well on tough pitches in Wellington and Christchurch

ESPNcricinfo staff05-Mar-2020

Among the many factors that influenced India’s two-nil defeat to New Zealand in the Test series, former India batsman VVS laxman observed a worrying trend that afflicted some of the batsmen, including captain Virat Kohli, who tallied just 38 runs in four innings and averaged his second-worst 9.50.”Virat was trapped leg before to the ball coming in twice in the second Test, Mayank Agarwal fell in similar fashion in both innings in Christchurch to Trent Boult’s inswingers, Prithvi Shaw was cramped up and dismissed fending by balls following him in the second innings of both Tests,” Laxman wrote in his column for .India’s batting struggled collectively managing just four individual fifties and a highest total of 242, besides being skittled for under 200 on the other three occasions. Laxman felt that though the conditions were tough – India were sent in on green tops in both Tests – New Zealand’s plans were straightforward and that the batsmen should have applied themselves better.”I am sure the batting group would be hurting, especially, since they take a lot of pride in preparation but were caught napping by New Zealand’s game plans for two Test matches in a row. I agree the conditions were tricky and challenging, but that’s no reason why there shouldn’t have been a greater application from the batsmen.New Zealand’s plans were straightforward enough – to get swing with the new ball and make use of the lateral movement and, should that fail to produce wickets, to resort to the liberal use of the short ball.”After the first Test, where particularly in the second innings staring at a large deficit India allowed New Zealand to bombard them with short-pitch stuff, they decided to take it on in Christchurch. While the plan fetched India useful runs, it also led to untimely dismissals of half-centurions Hanuma Vihari and Cheteshwar Pujara in the first innings, and Ajinkya Rahane, who was consistently troubled by that length, in the second.”Ajinkya Rahane’s a tortured stint in the second innings in Christchurch best illustrated India’s confusion,” Laxman wrote. “For an experienced and accomplished batsman who has scored runs all around the world, Rahane seemed all at sea against Neil Wagner and Kyle Jamieson’s short-ball barrage, and tried to hit his way out of trouble. On that surface, it was a method never designed to succeed.”Rahane had a forgettable second Test where he made a total of 16 runs, but more than the lack of runs, the lack of control with which he batted in the second innings stood out. He made 9 from 42 in a bizarre innings where he fended at rising deliveries, took a blow to the side of the helmet in attempt to pull before eventually, he was bowled trying to get inside the line of a Wagner short-one that came on slower than he expected. While one former India batsman and chief selector questioned Rahane’s shot selection, the other attributed his struggles to a technical glitch that he felt had crept into Rahane’s game.”He’s making an extra movement with his hands while batting. He’s moving his bat too much in his backlift. He’s a fraction of a second late on to the ball. It explains why his head isn’t still when the ball is delivered,” Dilip Vengsarkar told .Sandeep Patil was more critical: “You need to leave the short balls alone. They were bowling short-pitched stuff on a green top. Your shot selection becomes very important in such a case. You’ve to show a lot of patience and guts.”Wasim Jaffer, the former India opener and a senior team-mate of Rahane’s in Mumbai when he started out, however, differed on the subject, and felt Rahane needed to trust his natural game, which was to attack.”Sometimes, I feel that he gets too defensive,” Jaffer observed. “The Ajinkya I know plays the best when he’s positive and looking to score runs and attack. At times, he’s defending balls which he can score off. He’s giving the bowlers too much respect. He’s hit 100s in IPL, so he can do it.”Jaffer also felt that the “fear of failure” had crept into Rahane’s game.”I heard about this (batting slowly) when he was playing for Mumbai this season. This happens due to fear of failure. He has led India, he’s got a tremendous overseas record, but all that’s history. Now that he’s been labelled only as a Test player, been out of the India’s limited overs team, human nature is such that one wants to establish himself as a Test specialist.
