A consolidated effort from bowlers, followed by contributions from Sharjeel Khan, Sarfaraz Ahmed and Anwar Ali with the bat, helped Sindh beat Northern by four wickets.Batting first, Northern got off to a decent start putting in 27 in 3.3 overs before opener Umar Amin was dismissed, following which wickets started falling in regular intervals. The scoring rate went down, as no batter scored more than Mohammad Nawaz, who made a 30 off 34. Imad Wasim (18 off 13) and Haris Rauf (19 off 9) helped pushed the score further but Northern could only post a modest 136. Shahnawaz Dahani (3 for 26), Mohammad Hasnain (2 for 40) and Zahid Mahmood (2 for 25) were the pick of the bowlers for Sindh.Sindh were off to a strong start in the chase with Sharjeel Khan hammering 23 in the first two overs. But three quick wickets in space of nine balls meant Sindh had to take the conservative route, as Sarfaraz and Anwar batted with caution to take them to a win. Anwar hit three fours and one six in his 31 off 23 balls before falling to Haris in the 19th over with the scores level following which Sarfaraz hit the winning runs.File photo: Mohammad Rizwan taps one away•PCB

A comprehensive all-round performance from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) saw them ease past Southern Punjab (SP) by seven wickets. KP found both their bowlers and batters on song in a comfortable win that takes them top of the table.Mohammad Rizwan had opted to field first, and with arguably the best bowling attack in the league, it was easy to see why he felt confident. Imran Khan and Mohammad Wasim found themselves among the wickets early to stifle SP up front, and while Mohammad Imran tried to hold the innings together, wickets continued to fall at the other end. Shaheen Afridi, who had gone wicketless in his first spell, returned to remove the dangerous Khushdil as well as the stubborn Mohammad Imran, and aside from a breezy 14-ball 25 from Hassan Khan, there was limited resistance from the lower order as SP folded for 152.Naseem Shah gave SP some hope by getting rid of Fakhar Zaman early but, thereafter, KP assumed control. Rizwan’s breathtaking 2021 continued with another commanding, assured anchoring role in the chase, while Sahibzada Farhan took on a more pugnacious role at the other end. The duo kept SP at bay for the best part of the innings in a sensational 136-run second-wicket partnership, and by the time both fell off consecutive deliveries either side of the 17th-over mark, the game was all but done. Adil Amin and Iftikhar Ahmed knocked off the remaining runs to keep SP winless after two games.

Free State CEO at SJN hearings: 'Would I advertise accommodation like that? Absolutely I wouldn't'

Johan van Heerden on concerns raised by Eddie Leie over living conditions of younger academy players, all of whom were black

Firdose Moonda18-Oct-2021

Monday’s testimony was based on issues raised by Eddie Leie•Cricket South Africa

The Free State Cricket Union has admitted to providing sub-standard accommodation for academy players, all of whom were black, as recently as 2019, but denied any racial discrimination in the province’s cricketing structures. Speaking at the resumption of Cricket South Africa’s Social Justice and Nation-Building (SJN) hearings, Free State CEO Johan van Heerden expressed regret with the provisions his union made for up-and-coming players in their system but said the facilities in Bloemfontein remain exemplary for anyone hoping to further their cricketing career.van Heerden was the first responder after a ten-week recess, and will be followed by several others, of all whom will be answering to allegations of discrimination made in the first phase of the hearings between July 5 and August 6. van Heerden specifically addressed issues raised by two-time T20I cap Eddie Leie, who expressed concerns over the living conditions of younger academy players among other things.Leie’s affidavit, submitted to the SJN earlier in the year, contained images of the Mangaung Oval’s old gymnasium, which had been converted into a residence for academy players, at the request of the academy coach. Although not displayed on the SJN’s YouTube channel, the pictures showed basic accommodation which Sandile July – one of ombudsman Dumisa Ntsebeza’s assistants – described as “not even a star, never mind five”, and which van Heerden conceded the union was embarrassed about. “If you look at the photos and if you ask me if I would advertise accommodation like that, absolutely I wouldn’t,” van Heerden said.He explained that the accommodation was developed under former academy coach Dillon du Preez, who currently works with the South Africa women’s team, to assist young players who missed out on financial support via a bursary scheme. “He requested us to assist on a short-term basis players who could not get into the university. They were coming not from Bloemfontein, but most probably from Bethlehem and Kroonstad and places from where they would have travel in for the day and back,” van Heerden said.”When Dillon requested that, we used the old gym at the downstairs western pavilion and revamped it into accommodation. We developed it into three bedrooms with partitioning walls. It was fairly private but not five-star accommodation. It was not as permanent accommodation but solely for a short term.”Obviously the accommodation was not five-star, but they had TVs, they had brand-new beds, it was very neat at the time, when they moved in. Part of the arrangement was that they would have to upkeep it themselves, not upkeep but clean it, as it wouldn’t have been a serviced area. It’s not something I would pride ourselves on. After the kids moved out, we have never used that accommodation any further. Did we ever think it was the best solution? Most probably not. It was made into living accommodation – not that we want to pride ourselves on it.”Related

Asked if all of the players using the accommodation were black, van Heerden said: “I don’t think there was a white player in there.”In hindsight, van Heerden said it was “a mistake from Free State’s side… but it was never meant in a bad way. It was meant to see how we could get kids to the next level.”When pushed on whether he could understand Leie’s dismay at seeing young black players living in such conditions, van Heerden agreed that Leie had cause to be distressed, albeit that he lived in better accommodation. “If I was a player, I would have felt that way too,” van Heerden said. “Eddie didn’t live there. He had a flat that was rented by the franchise. It wasn’t at the stadium. He was a professional, earning quite a lot of money and he would have been able to pay for his accommodation.”Leie moved to the Free State from Gauteng and also claimed to be unhappy with the way his career went in Bloemfontein, where he hoped he would be able to push for a more permanent place in the national side. According to van Heerden, Bloemfontein remains a place where cricketers, and especially black cricketers, can advance themselves. “We’ve had so many black players coming through who enjoy it, and have improved their cricket to the extent that they can play for the national team. We have a team set-up that I believe is culturally the best in South Africa,” van Heerden said. “I believe that in Bloemfontein the social life is different to any other province or city so if you love to be at the sea, you are going to find it difficult but our facilities are fantastic. The nets are good. If your purpose is to come here and get yourself into the team, this is the place to make it happen.”van Heerden also emphasised that the team culture is healthy. “It’s a family team set-up. We don’t have the bright lights or the sea. It’s a small community, a family-orientated, small set-up with strong disciplines on the field and in fitness. It’s more difficult for younger kids to grow up in Bloemfontein than those in Durban or Johannesburg. There’s not many attractions, but the team will do things like have a together once a month. We are quite a happy family.”

Everton could sign one of Europe’s top talents for a 30,000% price markup

Everton are reportedly interested in bringing a “very fast” young defensive talent to Merseyside, but his club are demanding a huge increase on what they paid for him.

Latest Everton news

Blues supporters will not only be boosted by Sean Dyche’s side’s improved run of form in the Premier League either side of the international break, but also some of the transfer rumours coming the club’s way. For example, Everton are thought to be keen on signing Besiktas attacking ace Semih Kilicsoy, with a £16.5m offer for him even being prepared. Still only 19, he already has two assists in three Turkish Super Lig starts this season, and is a young player with a high ceiling.

Meanwhile, AC Milan winger Samuel Chukwueze has also emerged as a reported target for the Merseysiders, as they look to strike a deal during the January transfer window. Dyche clearly wants more attacking threat added to his squad and the 25-year-old could provide just that, having scored five goals in 38 caps for Nigeria.

In terms of a potential big off-field development at Everton, Lina Souloukou has been linked with becoming the club’s new CEO, despite being sacked by The Friedkin Group from her same role at Roma last month. That was more to do with fan unrest, however, due to the firing of manager Daniele De Rossi.

Everton keen on signing defensive "monster"

According to a new claim from Jeunes Footeux [via Sport Witness], Everton are lining up a move for exciting Lens centre-back Abdukodir Khusanov, who is considered a “monster” by his teammates.

The Ligue 1 side only signed him for €100,000 (£83,000) but are demanding as much as €30m (£25m) for his services, meaning they would be earning 300 times the amount they paid for him, an astonishing 30,000% markup. Newcastle are also seen as suitors for the 20-year-old, who is described in Sport Witness‘ update as “one of the greatest talents in European football this season”.

Khusanov looks like a player with an immense amount of potential, so the idea of Everton snapping him up and making him Jarrad Branthwate’s long-term centre-back partner is a mouthwatering prospect. These are the calibre of young players that the Merseysiders should always be looking to sign, with Lens head coach Will Still heaping praise on him, saying: “Kodir is very, very fast. He’s an athlete. We joked that when he went to the Olympics, he could have done all sports with Uzbekistan he’s so complete!”

At just 20, Khusanov is a fixture for both club and country, making eight appearances in Ligue 1 so far this season and enjoying an 89.1% pass completion rate, and not only has he won 16 caps for Uzbekistan, but he also represented them three times at the 2024 Olympics.

Boehly sends delegates to club as Chelsea eye £83m Fofana alternative

Chelsea and chairman Todd Boehly by extension sent delegates to one club over the weekend, with an £83 million defender and alternative to Wesley Fofana on their potential transfer agenda ahead of 2025.

Chelsea targeting new centre-backs for Maresca

Enzo Maresca’s side have enjoyed an impressive start to the new Premier League season, most recently getting back to winning ways with a 2-1 win over Newcastle United at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

Their only top flight losses of the campaign came against title-chasing Man City and Liverpool, which is a good example of the stellar job done by Maresca so far. In the background, Boehly, BlueCo and co-sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart are identifying potential squad upgrades for the Italian.

One item on their to-do list, according to reports, is to bring in a new central defensive option who can complement, or even compete with, Fofana and Levi Colwill – who have both formed an impressive partnership at the heart of Maresca’s back line so far.

Chelsea are monitoring Robert Renin as one option, with the Brazilian currently on a loan spell at Al-Shabab in Saudi Arabia from Russian Premier League giants Zenit St. Petersburg.

Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo is also a target for Chelsea, with some reports suggesting that the west Londoners are prepared to make a “significant” bid for the Uruguay international.

This comes after a previous claim by journalist Simon Phillips that Chelsea are scouting South American centre-backs, as Boehly and co take a particular interest in centre-backs from that region of the globe.

Another very highly-rated South American on their radar, and the radar of many other elite clubs, is Palmeiras starlet Vitor Reis. The 18-year-old could cost as much as £83 million to prise away from Brazil, the value of his release clause, with Reis attracting attention from Arsenal and Real Madrid as well.

Both the Gunners and Galacticos have already approached Reis’ club and representatives ahead of a potential move (The Athletic), with Liverpool, Barcelona and Chelsea also expressing an interest in him.

Chelsea send scouts to watch Reis ahead of potential move

Now, The Boot Room claim Chelsea sent scouts to watch Reis in action over the weekend.

The Blues had delegates running the rule over him during Palmeiras’ 2-2 draw with Fortaleza in Sao Paulo. Chelsea gem Estevao, who is set to fully link up with the club in 2025, got on the scoresheet during this encounter – but west London employees also had their eyes firmly on Reis.

It is believed the teenage sensation could be signed as an alternative to Fofana, and Chelsea are “huge admirers” of Reis. Interestingly, the player only made his professional debut in June, featuring in a 3-0 loss to the same team that Chelsea watched him against on Saturday.

Reis has since become a regular, with journalist Oliver Mason writing for the Rio Times that he is the young defender shaping Palmeiras’ future.

Netherlands rely on inside knowledge as they look to trump South Africa in ODI series

The Netherlands have a number of players of South African origin, plenty of whom have played professional cricket in South Africa

Roelof van der Merwe plays for the Titans in South African domestic cricket•Peter Della Penna

Colin Ackermann and Roelof van der Merwe have provided Dutch captain Pieter Seelaar with intelligence on South African personnel and playing conditions respectively as Netherlands look to exploit local knowledge for the upcoming three-ODI series. They have five South African-born players in their squad and one South African-born coach, Ryan ten Doeschate, and are making the most of their insiders.”Colin is the most recent of our players who has played first-class cricket here in South Africa, so he actually ran me through all the players (in their squad) that I didn’t know before,” Seelaar said. “And Roelof – I don’t know how long he has been playing for the Titans and he knows SuperSport Park inside out. He has given me the ins and outs of how the dimensions of this ground work and where a lot of runs will be scored and where the wicket taking options are. That was quite helpful in our planning.”The two sides play the first two games at SuperSport Park, on Friday and Sunday, before moving up the road for the third ODI on December 1 at the Wanderers, where they may not have someone to provide the same lowdown, but it’s fairly well-known what to expect. Conditions should favour the quicks at both venues and the Dutch have a South African-born speedster who will want to make full use of the pace and bounce on offer. “Brandon Glover is one of the guys that can bowl with a bit of fire, he has got a bit of pace about him. He is going to enjoy not bowling in the same slow conditions we have in Europe but can actually bowl with fire here on bouncier, pacier wickets,” Seelaar said. But it’s not just the South Africans that Seelaar hopes people will have their eyes on as the series unfolds. He tipped Vivian Kingma, who missed the T20 World Cup with injury, to also find pitches to his liking. “He has now come back to full fitness and is bowling with great discipline and great control and I look forward to seeing him take the new ball,” Seelaar said.Related

Ryan Campbell: Every Associate country is wondering what next?

It’s not just optimism around individual players that Seelar has, but hopes for the team as a whole, who are looking to move up the World Cup Super League points table. “We do have the aim of trying to take points away from this series. We want to beat South Africa, at least once,” Seelaar said. “We are not here to just say that it’s nice to get a couple of games in. Hopefully we can get some results and some respect from fans all over the world to see that the Dutch are here to play some good cricket and take the fight to South Africa. We really want to meet the challenge head on.”Not least because the next 18 months could present the last opportunities for a team like Netherlands to get regular game time against the bigger nations. Seelaar echoed his coach Ryan Campbell’s disappointment at the scrapping of the World Cup Super League but committed to making the most of the time they have left. “It’s massively disappointing for us, not only for us but for the whole of Associate cricket. We don’t know what the future holds. We’ve still got 21 games left in the competition and it’s up to all of us to leave a mark and say that Associate cricket belongs on the biggest stage,” he said. The two sides play three ODIs, with the first two on Friday and Sunday, and the third Johannesburg on Wednesday.

Jhye Richardson confident for Test chance after weathering injury challenges

The fast bowler could add to his two Test caps against England in the Ashes

AAP19-Nov-2021Jhye Richardson couldn’t help but doubt whether he would return to Australia’s Test squad during the past two and a half years of injury hell.Richardson need worry no longer, having demanded selection in a 15-man Ashes squad named on Wednesday with his eye-catching match haul of 8 for 61 at the Gabba last week.He made his Test debut at the same ground in 2019, taking the new ball while enhancing his reputation as the nation’s most exciting young paceman.Richardson was earmarked for big things at both the 2019 ODI World Cup and Ashes, only to dislocate his right shoulder while landing awkwardly during a fielding mishap in Sharjah.Related

The 25-year-old weathered several setbacks but is now back to his best, looming as the most likely fast bowler to step up whenever selectors opt to rejig the triumvirate of Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc.”An injury like that, that sets you back for so long. There’s certainly some of those negative thoughts that come in,” Richardson told reporters in Perth. “Whether or not I’m going to get back to where I was.”Or could I swing the ball or have my variations or whatever? Richardson has snagged 16 wickets at 12.50 this Sheffield Shield season, delivering 85.2 overs in total. He spooked selectors and medicos in October, suffering a back spasm while warming up during a match in Perth. But he quickly got the green light to resume bowling then made a big impression on George Bailey last week, when the chairman of selectors was in the stands as Richardson bowled his side to a Shield victory.”Getting pretty excited by Jhye,” Bailey said. “Physically I think he looks as strong as I’ve seen ever seen him…he’s starting to build some resilience into his body.”One particular spell was really impressive. He ended up getting the wickets of Marnus [Labuschagne] and Joe Burns, who both commented that it was impressive quality.”Bailey shared news of Richardson’s call-up with the fast bowler during that same game, putting him on the cusp of fulfilling a childhood dream.”It’s one of the biggest series that you can possibly be involved in. Super exciting,” said Richardson. The focus is, if I do get a game, to just make sure that I’m doing everything that I have done up until this point. I don’t want to put too much pressure on myself.”
