Aston Villa eyeing transfer move for £50m gem who wants to work with Emery

Aston Villa are interested in signing a “fantastic” Spanish midfielder who knows manager Unai Emery very well, according to a new report. It has been another impressive start to a campaign for the Villans, as they have taken 18 points from a possible 27 in the league and sit top of the Champions League table after winning all three games. But they still have their eyes on future transfers.

The Midlands side were very active during the summer, but, as most teams do, they already have their plans lined up for future business as they look to keep growing and growing as a club.

It was reported last week that Monchi had sent Villa scouts to watch defender Nathan Zeze, as they plan to make a move for the player in 2025. The Frenchman has emerged on the radar of a few clubs around Europe, with Liverpool and Chelsea also interested in his services. Zeze is only 19, and it would be a statement of intent if they could beat some of Europe’s big sides to secure the Nantes’ centre-back’s signature.

As well as looking at Zeze, Villa are also interested in Juventus attacker Kenan Yildiz, and they are planning to make their move in the January transfer window. There are several clubs looking to sign the Turkish international, but Emery’s side are the most interested as of right now.

The transfer news doesn’t stop there for Villa fans, as they continue to have their eye on a player they have been linked with before, and he is someone that Emery knows very well.

Aston Villa plotting transfer swoop for £50m star

According to Caught Offside, Aston Villa are interested in signing Villarreal winger/midfielder Alex Baena. However, Villa face two obstacles, as the deal will not be cheap to complete, and they also face competition from fellow Premier League rivals Newcastle United.

Villa, along with the Magpies, have had scouts in place to watch Baena in recent La Liga games, and they have both been left impressed by the player’s performance. Baena, who has a 60 million euros release clause (£50m), is said to be open to the idea of moving to the Premier League.

Furthermore, the Villarreal man, who has been described as being “fantastic player” by Football Talent Scout Jacek Kulig, is keen on working under Emery again, as the pair worked together at Villarreal. The 23-year-old came through the academy at the Spanish side, and after his loan spell at Girona in the 2021/22 season, Baena has become an important player for the Yellow Submarine.

The report states that Baena wanting to work with Emery again could give Villa the edge over Newcastle in this transfer race, but both options are tempting for the player, as Villa continue to rise up the Premier League and perform in Europe, while Newcastle continue to push for a place in Europe’s big league. Villa were also reported to be keeping an eye on Baena back in September.

Time’s up: Spurs can finally axe Dragusin by signing "immense" £68m star

The unpredictable nature of Tottenham Hotspur’s form this season continues to be a problem for Ange Postecoglou.

The Australian’s side dismantled an incredibly talented Aston Villa outfit last Sunday, but fell to a 3-2 defeat to Galatasaray during the week and lost to Ipswich Town on the weekend.

The Tractor Boys were still without a Premier League victory heading into the game, and while they have some talented players in their side, they were massive underdogs.

Yet, the North Londoners managed to fall apart totally, and while there were plenty of poor performances across the board, one player once again stood out for the wrong reasons, a player who has become a real liability this season: Radu Dragusin.

Dragusin's dreadful form

Yes, arguably the worst player on the pitch yesterday afternoon was Romanian centre-back Dragusin, and while a poor performance here or there is forgivable, it’s not been just one bad performance from the 22-year-old this year.

He’s made nine appearances for the team so far, and while he did look quite good against Villa and Manchester City, he’s generally looked out of his depth in defence.

For example, Spurs writer Alasdair Gold awarded the defender just a 3/10 match rating for his performance on Sunday, a 3/10 for his display against Galatasaray during the week, and a paltry 6/10 against Championship side Coventry City in September.

Moreover, he started in the defeat to Newcastle United earlier in the season and got himself sent off early in the game against Qarabağ, only for his teammates to save his skin by taking their chances in front of goal.

Lastly, his underlying numbers aren’t all that impressive, with FBref ranking him in just the top 41% of centre-backs across Europe’s top five leagues for blocks, the top 43% for clearances, the top 45% for interceptions, the bottom 42% for passes completed and the bottom 13% for tackles, all per 90.

In all, the former Genoa ace isn’t doing enough to justify his position as Postecoglou’s third-choice centre-back, but the good news is that recent reports have linked the North Londoners with someone who could be the dream upgrade.

Spurs' dream Dragusin upgrade

Now, there are plenty of promising defenders out there at the moment, but according to a report from the Boot Room late last week, Spurs are incredibly keen on Sporting CP’s Ousmane Diomande.

Sporting centre-back Ousmane Diomande.

The report claims that the North Londoners see the 20-year-old as a potential long-term replacement for Cristian Romero should the Argentine leave the club in the near future.

However, given the interest from other top teams such as Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool, confirmed in the story, they’d do well to act on their interest as soon as possible, regardless of what happens to Romero, as the Ivorian could replace Dragusin instead.

That said, it’s a move that would cost Daniel Levy and Co a pretty penny, as according to the report, the “immense” centre-back, as dubbed by U23 scout Antonio Mango, has a release clause of £68m. While that’s a seriously significant amount, it could prove value for money down the line.

For example, despite being so young, the Abidjan-born titan has made 69 appearances for the Portuguese giants and played a crucial role in their league triumph last season.

Moreover, the 6 foot 3 “leader”, as dubbed by Portuguese football writer Kevin Fernandes, has become a crucial member of the Côte d’Ivoire national team, earning eight senior caps so far and starting two games in their Africa Cup of Nations winning campaign this year.

Lastly, when we directly compare the former Midtjylland prospect’s underlying numbers to Dragusin’s, there is only one winner.

For example, while the Sporting ace comes out second best in a couple of metrics such as progressive passes and blocks, he comes out way ahead in most others, including non-penalty expected goals plus assists, passing accuracy, shot and goal-creating actions, tackles and tackles won, interceptions, errors leading to a shot, ball recoveries and aerial duels won, all per 90.

Ultimately, Dragusin has shown his talent in glimpses, but it is clear that he’s not up to the standard Spurs or Postecoglou require. Therefore, Levy and Co should do what they can to sign Diomande in 2025 before someone else does.

Zak Crawley blames county pitches for England's batting woes during Ashes

England opener says substandard surfaces in Championship are a “country-wide problem”

Zak Crawley says that England’s batting woes in the Ashes will not be improved until the standard of pitches in county cricket is raised, adding that he will stay committed to Kent rather than seeking a fresh start at a more prominent club because the issue is a “country-wide problem”.Crawley, 23, produced an eye-catching innings of 77 from 100 balls in the second innings at Sydney this week – only England’s second non-defeat in 14 Tests Down Under since 2011 – as the tourists salvaged a modicum of Ashes pride by drawing the fourth Test to end Australia’s hopes of a whitewash. The innings was another glimpse of the talents of a player who shot to prominence with his career-best 267 against Pakistan in 2020, but who mustered just 173 runs at 10.81 in 16 innings in the whole of 2021, even though that tally included a similarly free-flowing 53 at Ahmedabad in March. After replacing the under-performing Rory Burns for the third Test at Melbourne, Crawley is now part of an England batting line-up that has yet to pass 300 in eight innings of the series, but as the inquest begins into another failed Ashes bid, he is adamant that the players are being let down by the county game.”I’ve batted on poor pitches, really, my whole Championship career,” Crawley told reporters in Hobart, ahead of Friday’s fifth Test. “I feel like it’s been very hard to open the batting.”At my best, I’ve obviously shown something the England selectors have enjoyed. So I got picked with an average of 30, but there aren’t too many openers averaging a lot more than that at the moment.”The pitches have been very favourable to bowlers my whole career so far so until that changes… I feel like the average is a little bit lower than I’d like. I think 34-35 is a very good average for an opener these days, and that’s something that’s very different from 10 years ago.”Writing in the Daily Mail this week, England’s former captain Nasser Hussain suggested that Crawley would benefit from a move away from Kent to further his career. Despite currently hosting Division One cricket in the County Championship, Canterbury’s average runs per wicket since 2017 is 27.11, the fifth-lowest of the 18 first-class grounds.

The Kia Oval, by contrast, tops the list at 34.67 – with Ollie Pope currently averaging 99.94 in home fixtures for Surrey, even though that prowess has not translated to success in the current campaign. He made 48 runs at 12.00 in the first two Tests before making way for Jonny Bairstow in the middle-order.”As long as I’m playing for England. I don’t see the need [to move],” Crawley said. “As long as I’m wearing the Three Lions, I haven’t really given it much thought, to be honest, because that’s my sole focus at the moment.”Obviously I’d like the pitch at Canterbury to be a little bit better,” he added. “I don’t think it’s unfair of me to say. But I don’t think it’s just a Kent thing: I think pretty much all the grounds I’ve played on have been pretty poor.”It’d be tough for me to find somewhere maybe a bit flatter. It’s more a country-wide problem, and I think it will help our Test team a lot if pitches did start getting better.”In spite of his struggles to build on that double-century 18 months ago, Crawley is adamant that his tough year at the top of the order – both on a series of spinning decks in the subcontinent, and now here in Australia – will stand him in good stead for the rest of his career.Related

“Playing in India against that spin and then the other night at the MCG in that final session of the [second] day, they’re the two hardest spells of cricket I’ve ever had, by a long way,” he said.”I wouldn’t have thought that it would get much harder than those two experiences. So, you’ve just got to take them on the chin and move on and learn from them. That’s what I’ll try and do.”Cricket’s a game where you fail a lot more than you succeed. So, it’s been a good year for me to try and pick myself back up and go again, and see how many times you can keep coming back and improving. I feel like I have improved and am a better player than I was a year ago. And that’s what I am going to look to do this year, be a better player than I am right now.”

Celtic could now look at move to sign new Japan international in January

Celtic are aiming to take advantage of a Japan international’s current situation and sign him during the January transfer window, according to a fresh transfer update.

Celtic transfer news

The Hoops continue to be linked with new signings, whether in January or next summer, with Burnley midfielder Josh Brownhill mentioned as an option. The 28-year-old has started all 15 of the Clarets’ Championship games this season, and his experience could be a great addition for Brendan Rodgers in the middle of the park.

Manchester City youngster James McAtee has also been mentioned as a potential option for Celtic, with the 22-year-old finding his opportunities limited at the Etihad currently. He has already enjoyed two separate loan spells at Sheffield United, but a move to Parkhead is now being mooted.

Planning for the future is always important for the Hoops and Motherwell midfielder Lennon Miller is a highly-rated player who has been backed to join both Celtic or Rangers. Still only 18 years of age, he has already made 55 appearances at senior level, scoring five goals and registering six assists in that time.

In terms of players who could leave Parkhead in the coming months, Alexandre Bernabei may have played his final game for the club, with the left-back on loan at Internacional. He isn’t alone in potentially moving on, though, with Stephen Welsh and Odin Thiago Holm in a similar boat.

Celtic could get January opportunity to sign Japan international

According to Bild [via Sport Witness], Celtic could get an opportunity to sign Japan international Kanji Okunuki in the January window after showing an interest earlier in 2024.

The 25-year-old winger currently plays for 2.Bundesliga side FC Nurnberg, but the Hoops could look to prise him away, as he is surplus to requirements with his current employers. Having looked like a summer exit was most likely in 2025, it now looks like January is a possibility instead and Celtic could take advantage.

Okunuki may not be a household name to Celtic supporters compared to the likes of Brownhill and McAtee, for example, but he could be another shrewd addition from Japan.

The likes of Kyogo Furuhashi, Reo Hatate and Daizen Maeda have all been such strong signings from that part of the world, and there’s nothing to say that their compatriot couldn’t have a similar impact.

Granted, things aren’t going too well for him at Nurnberg at the moment, but he is one-cap Japan international and could flourish playing alongside not only the aforementioned trio of Asian stars but also other Celtic players who are arguably at a higher level than the 2.Bundesliga.

He's better than Idah: Celtic must rue selling star who's now worth £7.5m

Celtic may be regretting the sale of one former Parkhead star

1 ByRobbie Walls Nov 22, 2024

At 25 years of age, Okunuki is at a good point in his career to come in and hit the ground running, and 21 goal contributions (14 goals and seven assists) in 96 appearances during his time at Omiya Ardija shows that he can deliver a steady flow of end product from his wide attacking role.
