Imagine him & Philogene: Ipswich chase £15m "dream" Igor Jesus upgrade

Much like the first transfer window Ipswich Town found themselves involved in after promotion, this January window looks set to be a busy one for the relegation-threatened side.

After all, this drawn-out month gives them a fantastic opportunity to recruit fresh blood that can help in their ongoing quest to stay put in the Premier League.

Already, Ipswich have signed Ben Godfrey on a loan deal to bolster defensively, with rumours now focusing in on the exciting Suffolk side adding in more firepower up top.

Ipswich's search for a striker

It looks as if Godfrey won’t be the only confirmed signing this early into January either, with Jaden Philogene reportedly joining the building for a £20m fee from Aston Villa to gift McKenna’s men a daring option down the right wing.

Ipswich aren’t done there, however, with the Premier League minnows still in the hunt for Middlesbrough sharp shooter Emmanuel Latte Lath, despite GIVEMESPORT recently revealing that Leeds United are out in front in attempting to land the clinical Ivorian.

Middlesbrough's Emmanuel Latte Lath shoots at goal as Burnley'sJamesTraffordmakes a save

The Whites are now considering lodging a £15m bid to try and win the Boro number nine, but Ipswich won’t be fazed by this new development, hoping that the allure of top-flight football could sway Latte Lath into calling Portman Road his next home before the February deadline is up.

Latte Lath could well strike up a devastating attacking duo with Philogene if a deal is reached, with the tricky winger a superstar in the Championship with Hull City last season, and will now be ready – like his Boro counterpart – to now take the division above by storm.

What Latte Lath could offer Ipswich

Away from Ipswich potentially splashing the cash recklessly on Igor Jesus to join from Botafogo for £30m, the Tractor Boys would win themselves a better bargain for their buck with Latte Lath, considering he is already a potent attacker in the English game.

It would all depend though on whether or not the 26-year-old would be able to handle the step-up, but when you glance at his goalscoring numbers in the EFL to date.

26 of Latte Lath’s strikes for Michael Carrick’s men have come in the bread and butter of the second tier, with ten league goals coming his way this 2024/25 so far to alert teams to his services.

Jesus, meanwhile, has scored just eight times in 31 games for his current side, while there is less risk involved in Latte Lath’s signing considering his lesser price tag, and his blistering numbers to date playing on English shores means he could settle in well to McKenna’s group as another option away from Liam Delap just leading the line.

Equally, as indicated above, Latte Lath also comes out on top with regard to goals per 90, while he also seemingly offers a great physical presence as the first line of defence, as showcased by his superior record with tackles, interceptions and aerial duels won.

With the pair operating in similar level leagues – with the Championship and Brazilian Serie A classed among the ‘next 14 competitions’, outside of Europe’s top five leagues – it does illustrate just what an upgrade the Boro man would be on his Botafogo counterpart.

Likewise, Philogene will pray he finally gets his chance to impress in the big-time at Ipswich, having been used infrequently by Unai Emery at Villa Park.

Indeed, the ex-Hull ace has only been thrown in from the start in league action this season two times, despite setting the second tier alight last campaign at the Tigers.

There was, of course, this outrageous strike that went viral for looping over the Rotherham United goalkeeper’s head, with Philogene registering 12 goals and six assists overall in the Championship.

With a spot down the right wing more open, owing to Wes Burns being the only fit option currently, the reserve Villa figure could become a main spark in the first team when making the switch to Suffolk.

Latte Lath – who was once described as being a “dream to play with” by Boro teammate Luke Ayling – will hope his fair share of first-team opportunities comes about if he joins, with the pair potentially making Ipswich even more threatening in attack ahead of tough games to follow near the foot of the league.

Imagine him & Doak: Ipswich targeting "incredible" star in club-record move

Ipswich Town could welcome in a whole host of new attackers this January.

Daniel Bell-Drummond doubles up as Kent close out stalemate with ease

Kent opener makes two centuries in a match for first time

Paul Edwards29-Jun-2022

When two of the possible results of a first-class match have been virtually ruled out after little more than four of the game’s 12 sessions, the course of the contest is correspondingly limited. Barring unlikely declarations, Surrey’s rapid amassment of 673 by two o’clock on Monday ensured they would neither lose nor tie this game and attention rapidly shifted to the question of whether Kent could save it. It took over 48 hours to answer that question but few of those at The Oval over the past three days were made tired by waiting. The patience of Peter May Boys is rather greater than that of their eponymous inspiration when he was asked damn-fool questions by hacks.Daniel Bell-Drummond’s forbearance cannot be doubted either, especially so after a match in which he scored two centuries for the first time in his career and took his total of first-class runs this season to 700 at an average of 77.77. Kent’s No3 was at the wicket for all but six minutes of this day’s play and batted for eight hours 40 minutes in the whole contest. That is 14 minutes longer than it took Surrey to pile up their colossal first-innings score but Bell-Drummond’s brief was different and he fulfilled it outstandingly well. It was only fitting at 5.50 this evening that the first hand Rory Burns shook was that of the cricketer who had been principally responsible for denying his side their victory. The draw will not satisfy Surrey, of course, but after a round of matches in which Hampshire lost and Lancashire drew, their lead at the top of Division One has been extended from three to 16 points. It is a decent return from a game in which they were deprived of the services of Jamie Overton and Reece Topley by international calls and Jordan Clark by a side injury. That trio have taken 52 wickets this season, yet their absence has only stressed the deep resources – and pockets – of a county that can call on Sam Curran and Dan Worrall, a pair who took three of the four wickets to fall on this final day.Kent will point to the injury problems that have bedevilled them since the start of the season and their gritstone achievement in drawing this game was admirable, especially when one considers the brutalities visited upon their attack by Curran and Will Jacks. Even on a true pitch where Surrey’s lack of a slow left-armer was noticeable, it takes mental strength to face down an enormous score and that quality was shown once again by Bell-Drummond who strolled out to bat after only 11 balls of the morning.By then there had already been an entertaining overture to our day’s cricket when a late start at 11.50 was delayed for a few minutes by a further squallette of rain. The Kent openers considered the umpires’ removal of the bails licenced them to skedaddle up the dressing-room steps whereas Surrey’s players stayed on the field and waited with the umpires for the monsoon to abate. After less time than it takes to play “Teenage Kicks” (that’s a song, not a video game) the officials waved the batsmen back out but we still lost another over from our initial ration of 83, so Joe Denly and Ben Compton probably considered their departure worth it.The pair were, though, considerably less chuffed twenty minutes later when they had both been given out leg before wicket and the match had been plunged neck-deep in the hazard. Compton was the first to go when he played around his front dog to Curran, and three overs later, Denly’s pleasing 69 was ended when he was beaten for pace and smacked on the back pad by Dan Worrall. That was the first of perhaps three passages of play in which Kent’s batting might have dissolved on this final day but Bell-Drummond and Jack Leaning put on 107 either side of lunch before the Kent skipper had his off stump knocked out by a fine ball from Curran which swung in late. Jordan Cox then played the flimsiest innings of the day, his 40-minute 27 being ended after tea when he pulled Gus Atkinson straight to Curran at deep square leg. At that point Kent were 266 for 4 and the last hour had not yet started. However, any talk of late drama was hushed by Bell-Drummond and Ollie Robinson, who had added 95 when Burns called off his mastiffs. In truth, the draw had seemed certain for perhaps 20 minutes and the Surrey skipper confirmed that impression by bowling the last over. A game that had been marked by mountainous achievement and great skill ended on a note of slight farce but we are rarely the worse for a little silliness.

Rangers eyeing move to sign 6 ft 2 player in Igamane-like January transfer

Rangers are now eyeing a move to sign a new defender this month, according to a recent report, with injuries mounting up at Ibrox.

Rangers transfer news

The Gers are back in action on Thursday as they travel to face Dundee in a game they simply must win as they try to close the gap to Celtic. It will be another tricky test for Philippe Clement’s side, especially given the fact he is short in the heart of the defence.

Rangers considering dumping player who started on Sunday for £0 this month

One man who has found himself back in the Rangers starting XI could still leave the club in this transfer window.

1 ByBrett Worthington Jan 8, 2025

If the Scottish side are going to be busy this month with incomings, then signing a new defender at the very least is likely to be high on the agenda. Injuries to Leon Balogun, John Souttar, Neraysho Kasanwirjo and James Tavernier have left the Gers short at the back, and that has resulted in them being linked with a few different defenders.

It emerged earlier this week that Rangers are interested in signing Jonny Evans from Manchester United. The Northern Irishman is on the fringes at Old Trafford and could be available for a move if Evans wants to explore it.

The Rangers board definitely want to bring in the defender before the window shuts, but Clement is said to be wary of a move for Evans, given his age, and he would like the club to bring in a younger option. There are two other defenders on Rangers’ radar, and they are Norwich City’s Grant Hanley and former player Nikola Katic. Hanley has hardly featured for Norwich this season, while Katic is open to moving back to Ibrox, and discussions have already taken place.

Rangers eyeing move to sign King in January transfer

Evans, Hanley and Katic are not the only central defenders being looked at by the Gers, as according to The Daily Record, Rangers are also weighing up a move for defender Richard King.

Rangersmanager PhilippeClement

The 23-year-old currently plays for Jamaican side Cavalier FC, and apart from a short loan spell at Iceland side IBV Vestmannaeyjar, he has done so for his whole career. King, who is 6 foot 2, has performed very well at club level, and that has allowed him to collect 20 caps for his national side, Jamaica.

His performances in his homeland haven’t gone unnoticed, as Rangers are now interested in signing the defender this month as they continue their search for a new centre-back. King has emerged on their radar as technical director Nils Koppen casts his net wide in his bid to find talent to improve Clement’s squad.

The Gers are looking to unearth young players who are not yet household names and can later be sold for big profits, similar to how Brighton operate in the Premier League. Igamane is a prime example of that working, as he was signed from a relatively unknown league in Morocco in the summer and is now becoming a key player for the Gers.

King is now being looked at as fits that profile, but has also been chased by Premier League teams such as West Ham, Aston Villa, Newcastle and Brighton in the past.

ECB and Sky Sports extend English cricket rights deal until end of 2028

New deal to include increase in Blast coverage, and more women’s fixtures than ever before

ESPNcricinfo staff14-Jul-2022

The ECB and Sky Sports have extended their broadcast partnership by a further four years, until the end of 2028.The new deal, which is set to begin in 2025, includes a commitment to 90 extra hours of cricket each year, and guarantees that the Hundred – the new competition that was a major factor in the last rights cycle for 2020-24 – will continue for at least another five seasons. That hike in live coverage includes a commitment to a 50 percent increase in the number of Vitality Blast fixtures being broadcast, including one game per round being shown free-to-air on Sky Sports’ YouTube channel. The exact details of the new deal’s free-to-air provisions will be confirmed at a later date – the BBC’s current agreement extends until the end of 2024 – although at least two women’s T20 internationals each year will be broadcast on terrestrial TV, as well as eight women’s Hundred matches – an increase of two from the current deal.Sky have also pledged to continue supporting grassroots cricket through the ECB’s Dynamos Cricket programme.Clare Connor, the ECB’s interim chief executive, said: “Sky have been fantastic partners for cricket for over 30 years. Their broadcast coverage is rightly lauded as the best in the world, but more significantly than that we have a shared commitment to growing the sport and investing in more opportunities, not only for people to watch and follow cricket in all its forms, but also to pick up a bat and ball.”Thanks to Sky and the support of other partners, we saw a record 14 million people playing, attending or following cricket in 2021. This year alone, 10,000 children will get the chance to have a free taste of cricket through Sky Dynamos Intros, while many, many more will benefit from facilities and opportunities to play which are only possible because of Sky’s investment. It shows this media rights model is working, and we are very grateful for Sky’s ongoing support.”We have worked closely with the wider game and our First-Class Counties to agree this new deal with Sky, which will see not only more live women’s and men’s cricket on Sky, but also more on free to air TV as well. I would like to place on record our thanks to the First Class County Chairs, to all of the Sky teams involved and to ECB colleagues including Tony Singh and Tom Harrison, who have played the central role in delivering this outstanding result for cricket.”Our shared values and vision with Sky will make cricket accessible to even more people over the coming years and will use the power of sport to inspire the next generation, while safeguarding the wonderful traditions which are such a key part of our game.”Stephen van Rooyen, Sky Sports’ EVP and CEO UK and Europe, added: “This is an exciting time for English cricket and we’re thrilled to be furthering our long and successful partnership with the ECB. Together we will continue to help grow the game while boosting participation in the sport by children from all backgrounds through initiatives like our Dynamos Cricket Intros.”On screen, we will continue to push boundaries in our BAFTA-winning coverage, bringing Sky Sports viewers even more live action from 2025 – including more women’s cricket than ever before – with men’s and women’s England internationals and domestic cricket. Sky’s investment over the last 30 years has contributed to a great deal of success on the pitch, and we hope to be at the forefront of much more to come.”

Quero jogar no Morumbi, quero estar aqui. O São Paulo é a minha casa, onde me sinto bem, me sinto feliz – afirmou Diego na ocasião.

Rangers could repeat Cantwell move by signing "full-blooded" titan

Glasgow Rangers have signed several players from England over the previous few years to varying degrees of success.

The likes of Juninho Bacuna, Kieran Dowell and George Edmundsson failed to light up Ibrox following moves to Scotland.

Elsewhere, Joe Aribo, Leon Balogun and Jack Butland have shone during their respective spells at the Light Blues. One name that stands out – despite his acrimonious ending to his spell at Rangers – is Todd Cantwell.

The Englishman on his day looked like one of the best players in the Premiership, no doubt about that.

Todd Cantwell’s statistics at Rangers

Michael Beale didn’t get much right during his ten-month stint in charge of the Gers, but signing Cantwell and Nico Raskin in January 2023 was one success story.

The former Norwich City starlet took to Scottish football with ease, scoring six goals and grabbing five assists for the club during his first few months.

Rangers midfielder Todd Cantwell.

The following season, 15 goal contributions were registered as the Light Blues won the League Cup, but it was clear that Philippe Clement wasn’t too keen on Cantwell.

The Englishman did create seven big chances while averaging 1.7 key passes per game in the top flight last term, but he was sold to Blackburn Rovers last summer.

Judging by his statistics, Cantwell was a decent signing and could still have contributed to the team this term if he wasn’t sold.

There are plenty of players from the EFL who have a lot to offer and recently, the Gers have been linked with a current Watford defender.

Considering the injury crisis in defence, it is clear that the Belgian manager will be keen to add reinforcements to this area of the pitch.

Rangers could repeat Cantwell masterclass

It was reported at the start of the month that the Light Blues had made a bid for Watford centre-back Ryan Porteous as they look to make a signing.

The Scot is well known to the Ibrox faithful, especially for his often provocative actions when playing against the club during his spell at Hibs.

Ryan Porteous

There is no doubting the defender is talented, however, but things haven’t worked out this term in the Championship for him. Indeed, the 6 foot 2 titan has started only 17 games for Watford.

Despite this, he has still won 57% of his total duels contested per game in the second tier, along with succeeding with 85% of his passes and making 1.7 tackles per game.

Having made over 150 appearances for Hibs during his spell in Edinburgh, Porteous is well accustomed to the physicality of Scottish football, which could make him a solid signing for the Gers.

John Hughes hailed the defender as being a “full-blooded type of player” back in 2022 and this type of centre-back is exactly what Rangers and Clement need.

Much will depend on how much money the manager has to spend, but if Watford demands a reasonable price for the 25-year-old, then a concrete offer should be made.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Having seen the benefits in snapping up Cantwell from England’s second tier during a January window, the Gers could repeat that trick by moving for Porteous this month.
