Arsenal had a shocker over Mustafi

Arsene Wenger didn’t make too many mistakes in the transfer market during his incredible 22-year tenure at Arsenal.

The Frenchman revolutionised the club, signing the likes of Thierry Henry, Dennis Bergkamp and Patrick Vieira who all played a key part in the club emerging as one of England’s dominant forces.

His later years did see a downturn in results and some of his acquisitions weren’t exactly massive success stories on the pitch, with one such example being Shkodran Mustafi, who joined the Gunners in 2016.

Shocking Mustafi

For a fee of £35m, it looked like Wenger was getting a solid, reliable centre-back and just 24 years old at the time, someone who could become a mainstay for the next few years.

The defender had won the World Cup with Germany in 2014, eventually going on to make 20 appearances for his country while he also featured 30 times in La Liga for Valencia the season prior to joining Arsenal.

Despite 151 appearances for the club, scoring nine goals, he didn’t exactly set the Emirates on fire during his near five-year spell at the London club.

Mistakes were commonplace, with a poor defensive error while playing against Crystal Palace in 2019 one of the worst, as he failed to deal with a harmless ball over the top before Wilfried Zaha nipped in to score and he was then booked for diving as the club lost 3-2, essentially cost them a top four spot that season.

That wasn’t the only error he made during an appalling season at the back, with the German dud costing his side on no fewer than six occasions.

It’s hardly a surprise, therefore, that Charles Watts, Arsenal correspondent for Goal described Mustafi as a “horrendous signing” after it was confirmed his contract with the club was torn up and he had joined Bundesliga side Schalke on a free transfer.

This marked a colossal waste of money, especially with the player never living up to the potential he had shown in La Liga and it represents arguably Wenger’s biggest mistake.

Mikel Arteta has yet to make a mistake of that worth, and hopefully he can continue his fine dealings in the transfer market as he aims to take Arsenal to a first Premier League crown since 2004.

Wayne Rooney risked his stuttering managerial career with a shock move to Plymouth – but after moving away from his family for a shot at redemption, is a dream Man Utd return really a possibility?

The England legend remains determined to crack the managerial game and must get it right at Home Park to be in the conversation for bigger jobs

Wayne Rooney is headline news. There's an inevitability to it – you don't carve out a career as one of the greatest players to ever wear a Manchester United and England shirt without attracting intense press scrutiny and your life constantly being under the microscope.

If Rooney the player had to face the music, Rooney the manager wasn't going to escape the noise, and while all's well when you're getting results in the managerial game, it can be a pretty harrowing place when things aren't going to plan.

Into his fourth permanent role in four years, and having failed to truly prove himself up to now, it feels like it's now or never for Rooney's managerial career as he navigates the lower echelons of the Championship with Plymouth Argyle.

So where's it been going wrong? How's it going now? And will Rooney ever be a contender to take his holy grail – the Manchester United job?

Getty A managerial reputation in tatters

Rooney's first taste of management came in November 2020 where he was entrusted with attempting to steer Derby County away from relegation from the Championship following the dismissal of Phillip Cocu. Already in place as a player-coach at Pride Park, this was his big chance – and he didn't make a bad fist of it.

Rooted to the bottom of the table and in their lowest league position for 12 years, Rooney took charge, first as part of a four-man interim team before getting the job permanently in January 2021, and would go on to settle for 21st place. Relegation avoided, mission accomplished – just about, it must be said, with the Rams surviving by a single point.

It would ultimately all end in misery, however. The following season saw Derby hit with deductions totaling 21 points, crippling their chances of survival. Indeed, the east Midlands club were relegated despite amassing 14 wins and 55 points – a tally that would've put them in 17th place had they not been punished by the EFL.

Rooney decided to step down from his position following relegation to League One, and headed back to the United States and D.C. United less than a month later. It didn't go so well.

Under their former striker, D.C. finished plum last in the Eastern Conference and then followed that up by failing to make the MLS play-offs for the second season in a row. Rooney's days were numbered.

Onto Birmingham City. Out of nowhere, the Championship play-off hopefuls – who had seen Tom Brady join as a minority owner just a couple of months before, raised eyebrows when they sacked John Eustace in October 2023 and bet all their chips on Rooney – it was bold, bizarre and by no means a guarantee of success.

It ended terribly, for all concerned.

After winning just two of his 15 games in charge, Rooney was shown the door. Birmingham would go on to be relegated and the Manchester United legend was shouldering the majority of the blame. His managerial reputation was in the gutter and at the point of no return, or so it seemed…

AdvertisementGetty Images SportPlymouth find their 'perfect match'

Plymouth Argyle and Wayne Rooney. A shock appointment that, just a few years ago, would've made it as a screenshot on the Out of Context Football Manager Twitter feed. But here it was, an opportunity for Rooney, and possibly his last-chance-saloon as a manager.

Following the Birmingham debacle, the former England captain had been out of work for a little over four months but he was in no mood to give up. Speaking via , he outlined his intentions to "bounce back" and that he was a "fighter", determined to rise off the canvas and keep on punching. And what's more – he'd had enough of being sat on the sofa at home, twiddling his thumbs. It was getting "weird".

It came out of the blue, but ahead of the 2024-25 season, Plymouth emerged as Rooney's salvation. Just like Derby back in 2021, Plymouth had survived relegation by the skin of their teeth. Change was needed, Rooney, they felt, was needed, with the 39-year-old reportedly winning a race consisting of as many as 80 candidates to land the job.

Argyle chief executive Andrew Parkinson called it a "perfect match" – time will tell. So how's it been going so far?

When Wayne Rooney walks through the door, whatever level of football you're playing at, you're going to take notice. After a full pre-season with his new manager, midfielder Adam Randell complemented Rooney's tactical awareness, commenting on how "approachable" he found England's second highest-ever goalscorer, despite all his enviable achievements as a player.

Come the start of the season, though, it couldn't have gone much worse.

Plymouth were ripped apart by Sheffield Wednesday, losing 4-0 and being completely played off the park – allowing 31 attempts at their goal attests to that. No one said it was going to be easy.

Since then, results it's fair to say, have been up and down. Of their 15 league matches to date, Argyle have put 16 points on the board – that's four wins, four draws and seven losses. They've only won one of their last five in the league but find themselves outside of the relegation spots and in 18th place – a 1-0 victory over fellow strugglers Portsmouth undoubtedly helping clear some of the doom and gloom.

Not great, it's fair to say, but not a complete disaster either. And Rooney's certainly not lost any of that fire that became synonymous with his playing career – a rage-induced red card during a narrow win over Blackburn proved as much.

Getty Images EntertainmentA big family sacrifice

Before a ball had even been kicked, or cone laid out, the Rooney family had some significant decisions to make after the Plymouth role was rubber-stamped – the most obvious being where they'd all live, and whether upping sticks to the south Devon coast was workable.

To put it simply – it takes five hours to drive from Rooney's family home in Cheshire's Golden Triangle down to Plymouth, some 260 miles away. The logical solution would've been to move his entire family – wife Coleen and their four boys – to Devon with him, something that was considered but ultimately ruled out.

Speaking on the topic, Coleen told the in September: "We thought long and hard about it (moving to Devon) but with the kids it didn't work.

"Kai's now in year 10 and just starting GCSE prep and everything’s going well with football, and the other boys are all settled at school, so it didn’t seem fair on the children to pick them up and take them away, and start in a whole new place. It’s manageable. It's life. Other couples and families have similar situations and have to get on with it."

The end result has seen Rooney purchase a flat in the city, with Coleen admitting that they only see him "a couple of times a week".

Forget the football side of things for a moment, taking the manager's job at Plymouth was clearly a significant – and, to some extent, lifechanging – decision for the Rooney family, with the 39-year-old sacrificing a lot of quality time with his wife and children to pursue his managerial dream. It surely takes its toll.

Karaoke, pasties & scrutiny

There's no denying it. Rightly or wrongly, Rooney is the most scrutinised manager in the Football League. Wherever he goes, whatever he does and whatever he says, it's going to make headline news. It comes with the territory of being the most recognisable name and face of English football – David Beckham aside – of the past two decades. And to be fair to Rooney, he often tackles it head on.

One thing that wasn't on our bingo card so soon after his appointment, however, was the sight of Rooney singing his heart out – albeit terribly – at a pub on the south coast. As expected, it went viral on social media.

On this occasion, though, it was for the right reasons, with Manchester United's all-time top scorer mixing with locals and showing that, despite his global status and fame, he's a pretty normal bloke at heart.

The headlines in November weren't quite as complementary.

The likened Rooney's life in Devon to that of a "bachelor", claiming he enjoys "boozy nights and takeaways" while in the temporary arrangement of living away from his family. That, and whether he's getting "stuck into the pasties", as one customer at a local bar speculated, can't be confirmed, but there have been suggestions that Coleen's concerned.

A source told in September: "Coleen got a bit of a shock when she saw Wayne recently. She's worried he's not taking enough care of himself now that he's living on his own.

"It was always going to be a big adjustment for him when he gave up playing football professionally. He was at the peak of his fitness during that time. Coleen made sure he ate healthily and he was always running about and playing footie with the boys. Now, she feels he's not putting himself first, and worries that he's struggling to cope without her looking after him."

Rangers missed out on Francis Amuzu

Glasgow Rangers suffered yet another Champions League meltdown on Wednesday evening. Liverpool emerged from Ibrox with three points and a 7-1 victory that leaves the Ibrox side pointless at the bottom of Group A.

Much has been made about weaknesses in certain positions and the fact that Giovanni van Bronckhorst hasn’t significantly improved the starting XI, however, the problem appears to be more mentality based, especially in the elite of the Champions League.

The Light Blues missed out on a few targets in the summer transfer window, however, it was a player they were linked with back in January that might have improved the team…

Francis Amuzu would have been an excellent signing

Back in December last year, Rangers were linked with Amuzu ahead of the January transfer window, with Van Bronckhorst keen to bolster his squad.

Unfortunately, a move didn’t materialise as the Dutchman had to persist for the rest of the campaign with Scott Wright on the right wing, and with no real backup to the 25-year-old, many were played out of position.

Wright netted seven times in 37 matches last season, but aside from that, his input was marginal at best, receiving a SofaScore rating of 6.96.

Amuzu scored nine goals alone in the Jupiler Pro League for Anderlecht last season, chipping in with three assists to prove that he could shine at the highest level.

The 23-year-old, although primarily a midfielder, can operate on either wing, and this versatility would have been perfect for Van Bronckhorst last season.

Although born in Ghana, Amuzu represents Belgium at youth level, winning 14 caps for the U21 side, scoring twice.

After 18 matches in all competitions this season, the player has five goal contributions already, four more than Wright, and the decision to not bring him to Ibrox is looking like it’s coming back to haunt the manager.

Amuzu was dubbed a “baller” by the NXGN Twitter account, which focuses on up-and-coming talent throughout the world of football, and it’s clear that he will move on from Anderlecht.

It looks like the Ibrox side have missed their chance when it comes to bringing the 23-year-old to Glasgow, as bigger clubs will soon be sniffing around the player before long.

Leeds handed potential Kristensen boost

Leeds United have been handed a potential injury boost concerning right-back Rasmus Kristensen.

What’s the latest?

According to a report by Leeds Live, despite the 25-year-old having missed out on the Whites’ defeat at Brentford after picking up a training ground injury in the week before the match, Kristensen has now been called up to the Denmark national team for their Nations League fixtures against Croatia and France later this month.

The report goes on to state that this is a clear indication of the severity of the defender’s knock, alleviating apparent fears that the former Red Bull Salzburg full-back’s injury was worse than initially revealed – as well as being something that should see the Dane available for the Whites’ next Premier League game against Aston Villa on October 2.

Good news for Marsch

Considering how impressive Kristensen has been for Leeds since his £10m move to Elland Road earlier this summer, should the right-back indeed be fit enough to feature for his country later this month, it would undoubtedly be good news for Jesse Marsch and his side.

Indeed, over his five Premier League so far this season, the £13.5m-rated defender has enjoyed a fine start to life in England, helping his side keep one clean sheet, as well as making an average of 2.0 tackles, 2.0 interceptions, 1.8 clearances and winning 3.4 duels per game.

These metrics have seen the eight-cap international average a SofaScore match rating of 6.82, ranking him as Marsch’s sixth-best performer in the league so far in 2022/23 – an impressive feat for a player who only arrived in Leeds in July.

Furthermore, while Luke Ayling did impress during his 20-minute cameo against the Bees last time out, considering just how shakey the Whites were without Kristensen on the right of their backline – shipping five goals against Thomas Frank’s side – it is evident just how important a part of March’s side the 25-year-old has already become.

As such, should the defender indeed be fully fit by the time Aston Villa make the trip to Elland Road at the start of next month, it would most certainly come as a huge boost to the club’s chances of picking up all three points against Steven Gerrard’s side – a result Marsch will be desperate for following the humbling defeat at the Gtech Community Stadium last time out.

Everton likely to sign ‘number one target’

Everton are likely to secure the signing of Blackburn Rovers striker Ben Brereton Diaz before Thursday’s transfer deadline, according to journalist Jacque Talbot.

The Lowdown: Maupay’s arrival

With Toffees manager Frank Lampard desperate to sign a striker after the departure of Richarlison earlier in the summer, the Blues set to work on a number of possible targets.

After a multitude of bids were made for various forwards, Everton recently completed the signing of Neal Maupay from Premier League rivals Brighton in a deal worth £15m.

The 26-year-old signed a three-year contract with the Merseyside club, with the option of extending this by a further year in 2025.

The Latest: One more striker

Despite the arrival of Maupay at Goodison Park, Everton reportedly remain in the market for another striker. According to 90min, the Toffees are looking to close a deal for Brereton Diaz before the Thursday night deadline.

With talks also progressing for Serhou Guirassy, Talbot has shared his verdict on Everton’s transfer situation.

Speaking with GiveMeSport about the likelihood of the Toffees signing the Rennes striker, the journalist claimed: “Yes, if they can’t get Brereton Diaz. He’s not the best player, but he will certainly be one they’re looking at.

“I don’t think he’s the number one target – I think that’s Brereton Diaz, of Blackburn. I imagine that will get done, which makes a lot of sense.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/everton-news-7/” title=”Everton news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Would be a strong signing

Despite a lack of Premier League experience for Brereton Diaz, the Toffees would be adding a proven goalscorer from the English footballing pyramid to their ranks.

In 37 appearances in the Championship last season, the Chile international netted an incredible 22 goals, bringing his overall tally in the second tier to 41 goals in 176 appearances.

At just 23 years of age, the striker would still have plenty of time to adjust to the rigours of the top flight, so sealing a deal for the youngster could be shrewd business for Everton in the long-run.

Therefore, if the Blues are able to get a deal across the line before Thursday’s transfer cut-off, Brereton Diaz could be a brilliant addition to Lampard’s squad, especially given Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s injury troubles.

Fulham must seal Ludovic Ajorque transfer

Fulham have been rather productive in terms of bringing new players to the club throughout this latest summer transfer window.

One area of the squad, however, that has not been particularly focused on in terms of adding extra strength and depth is their attack, as Manor Solomon is the only offensive player to have joined the west London club this summer.

With there still being some time left before the transfer window closes, this period could give the Cottagers the chance to top off what has been a busy summer of business by adding a new attacking figure to Marco Silva’s ranks.

One figure that has been linked with a move to Craven Cottage that would fit the bill is Ludovic Ajorque.

After scoring 20 goals in 70 appearances for his previous side Clermont Foot, the 28-year-old joined his current club Strasbourg back in the 2018 summer window.

Since then, the £14k-per-week centre-forward has racked up 50 goals and 19 assists in 139 appearances across all competitions.

Last season saw the attacker make 36 league appearances for Strasbourg, in which he managed to have 25 shots at goal, the joint-highest at the club.

One big-name figure that is included on FBref’s list of similar players to Ajorque is Antoine Griezmann, which only goes to highlight the dangerous nature of his play style.

Having made a total of 595 appearances for Real Sociedad, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid, the 31-year-old has 227 goals and 92 assists under his belt, which just goes to show how deadly he’s been in such a significant amount of time.

Thus, having a player of similar goalscoring ilk to the France international in the shape of Ajorque could be a very exciting move for Fulham to make. Both left-footed sensations, it’s clear to see where the biggest similarity lies.

That said, the Strasbourg striker’s conversion rate (25%) significantly beats Griezmann’s (7.69%), which highlights how dangerous the Fulham-linked centre-forward is and why he’d be a very useful addition to their squad.

Described as a “complete player who has developed his palette over time”, according to Julien Stephan, Ajorque certainly has the credentials to not only provide cover for current Fulham striker, Aleksandar Mitrovic, but also potentially add some competition for his place in Silva’s team.

Spurs: Conte dealt Zaniolo setback

Tottenham Hotspur have been dealt a blow in their bid to bring Nicolo Zaniolo to the Premier League this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by Italian media outlet CalcioMercatoWeb, who claim that, following a number of recent reports linking Spurs with a move for the 23-year-old, Fabio Paratici has now seen a €55m (£46m) bid for the midfielder rejected by AS Roma.

However, the report goes on to state that Antonio Conte’s side could yet return with an improved offer for the Italy international, despite it being previously reported that Jose Mourinho’s outfit had originally set an asking price of €50m (£42m) for the former Inter Milan starlet.

Gutting blow for Conte

Considering just how keen Conte appears to be on securing a deal for Zaniolo this summer, the news that Roma have now rejected Paratici’s £46m bid for the 23-year-old is sure to have come as a gutting blow for the 52-year-old Tottenham manager.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-spurs-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-so-much-more” title=”Read the latest Spurs news, transfer rumours and more!”]

And, considering just how impressive the forward-thinking midfielder was last season, it is not difficult to see why the Italian coach would like to add the nine-cap international to his current options in the middle of the park.

Indeed, over his 42 appearances in all competitions for the Giallorossi in 2021/22, the £29.7m-rated talent scored eight goals and registered nine assists, with the versatile forward playing a key role in Roma securing a sixth-place finish in Serie A and winning the inaugural Europa Conference League last time out.

As such, considering the fact that Oliver Skipp, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Rodrigo Bentancur managed just three goals and eight assists over their combined 94 outings in all competitions for Tottenham last season, it is clear to see that Zaniolo would add a much-needed attacking spark to Conte’s current central midfield options.

However, if the latest reports are to be believed, Paratici will be required to submit an enormous £46m+ bid in order to seal a deal for the Italian sensation to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this summer – something it remains to be seen whether Spurs’ budget will allow prior to the closure of the current market on September 1.

Crystal Palace ready to axe Benteke

Crystal Palace are willing to sell striker Christian Benteke this summer if the right offer comes in for the out of favour Belgian.

What’s the story?

According to a report in The Sun, The Eagles need to raise funds so that they can make new attacking signings, and are willing to listen to offers for Benteke.

The 31-year-old was in and out of the side last season and was recently left out of Roberto Martinez’s Belgium squad, so is keen to play regularly ahead of the World Cup this winter.

It’s unlikely he will get enough minutes at Selhurst Park so it seems best for all parties that he moves on.

He’s cost them too much

Benteke has just one year remaining on his contract, and at £120k-per-week, he is Palace’s second highest-paid player. It’s unlikely they will extend his current deal, but they may struggle to offload him before then given his hefty salary.

He’s amongst a host of players who were unable to travel on Palace’s pre-season tour of Singapore and Australia because they do not meet the entry requirements.  So if he does end up staying then he won’t have had a proper pre-season under his belt.

Last season he scored just four goals in 31 appearances, and with his weekly earnings that high, it means he cost the Eagles a staggering £1.5m per goal. For this reason alone Patrick Vieira must ruthlessly axe him.

He’s been described in the past by Alan Shearer as “scared to miss” and given his form last season it’s hard to disagree.

Given that sum, it’s also easy to see why Palace are unwilling to invest in another striker until Benteke is offloaded. If they did manage to get him off the wage bill then it would free up a lot of room for further additions.

The Eagles must also make sure that they keep hold of their star man Wilfried Zaha. He was their top scorer last season, with loanee Conor Gallagher in second place.

Gallagher has now returned to his parent club Chelsea, so Palace will be without his goals next season which further highlights their need to sign another goalscorer.

Vieira will be hoping that their latest addition Cheick Doucoure can replace what they’ve lost, but it may not be enough and they don’t want to risk having to rely on Benteke.

AND in other news: Vieira can form “remarkable” duo as Crystal Palace eye bid for “fantastic” £25m target…

Manchester United: Fabrizio Romano shares Pau Torres latest

Transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano has dropped an update on Manchester United’s pursuit of Pau Torres in an interview with GiveMeSport.

The lowdown

The Red Devils were interested in signing the Villarreal centre-back last summer as a backup to new arrival Raphael Varane, and they have nd now reignited their pursuit of the Spain international, with recently-appointed United manager Erik ten Hag having been consulted.

The 25-year-old’s contract with the La Liga club contains a release clause of around £52m, as per Romano.

The latest

The Italian journalist has now claimed that United have learned that they can sign Torres for a reduced fee. Intermediaries have been trying to strike an agreement that could see the move reach the next stage.

He told GiveMeSport: “For Pau Torres, they know he has a release clause of around €60m (£52m), but they also know that Villarreal would be willing to negotiate for something less than this.

“It could be around €45m-€50m (£38m-£43m). So they have all the conditions set, and they have had some conversations with intermediaries working on this deal.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-man-utd-news-3/” title=”Latest Man Utd news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The verdict

If United can agree a deal with Villarreal via these intermediaries, then the next challenge is persuading the player to come to Old Trafford.

Torres knows that he’d be competing with not only Varane but also club captain Harry Maguire, the most expensive defender in football history.

Beyond that, the Spaniard has made clear his preference to play Champions League football next season. United had to settle for a place in the Europa League after finishing sixth in last season’s Premier League.

The Red Devils saw first-hand how good he was in last season’s Champions League group stage. Even though Villarreal lost 2-1 at Old Trafford in September, Torres stood out on the night. As per Sofascore, he won five out of six duels, successfully executed a last man tackle and completed 97% of his passes (including four out of five long balls) and both of his dribbles.

Imagine how much United fans might love to see him performing like that at Old Trafford regularly…

In other news, United have submitted a bid for this Premier League star

Arsenal transfer news on Tavares

Journalist Luca Bendoni has revealed that ‘contact’ has been made with the camp of Nuno Tavares over a potential move away from Arsenal.

The Lowdown: Mixed season

Tavares had a mixed first season at the Emirates Stadium, receiving praise for his performances before Christmas in the absence of Kieran Tierney, but with mistakes creeping up in his game towards the business end of the campaign.

In the end, Mikel Arteta’s side missed out on a top-four finish to North London rivals Tottenham Hotspur, and Tavares’ inconsistency towards the end of the term was partially to blame.

Still, it was his first season in English football, and the Portuguese talent is still relatively young at 22.

The Latest: ‘Contact’ made

Taking to Twitter, Bendoni, who writes for Di Marzio, has revealed that ‘contact’ has been made with Tavares’ camp from both Atalanta and Real Sociedad over a potential move this summer, while Marseille are also ‘watching’ him:

“Nuno #Tavares situation, from what I’m told: – #Atalanta are interested in him, as @DiMarzio reported. They had a contact with his camp, but it’s a difficult deal.

“Also #RealSociedad had a contact.

“#OM are watching him as per @Santi_J_FM but there haven’t been talks yet.”

The Verdict: Tavares out, Martinez in?

Tavares would greatly benefit from a loan deal to help him settle into senior football before coming back to the Gunners next season stronger and more experienced.

This would mean that they would have to bring in another left-back as cover for the injury-prone Tierney, and Ajax star Lisandro Martinez is thought to be their ‘priority target’, according to The Athletic’s David Ornstein.

Ornstein states that AFC will ‘consider’ a temporary exit for Tavares if they can recruit in defence, and so a loan move for him could have an impact on any deal for Martinez.
