Tottenham ready to make early move to sign "incredible" £60m star for Ange

Tottenham are expected to start talks with a Premier League side soon as they look to land a £60m player this summer.

Tottenham transfer rumours

The 2024 summer transfer window is not yet open but Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou already has an idea about the type of players he is looking to sign.

Speaking late last month, the Australian was asked about attack being an area he wants to strengthen at Tottenham, to which he responded: "Yeah, absolutely. It's no secret. You saw the way we finished the season. We obviously lost Richy and Timo as well with injuries but we're fairly light in that area.

"We started last season with Manor [Solomon] and [Ivan] Perisic and we were quite healthy in that front third in terms of numbers, but as the year went on it became pretty evident that we need to bulk up. We're in Europe as well next year so we'll have more games and it's definitely an area of the park we'll need to strengthen."

Since then, the Lilywhites have been tipped to make a move for Stuttgart striker Serhou Guirassy, who enjoyed an excellent campaign as he helped his side qualify for the Champions League and finish second in the Bundesliga. Reports also claim Spurs could finally pull the trigger to bring Marcus Edwards back to north London after the winger left Tottenham for Portugal during Mauricio Pochettino's time in charge of the club. Athletic Bilbao's Nico Williams is also another player on the north London outfit's radar.

However, another high-profile name has seemingly caught the eye of those in a position of power at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as Football Transfers are reporting that Spurs are expected to initiate discussions with Crystal Palace within the next two weeks regarding the potential signing of attacker, Eberechi Eze.

Eze scored 11 and assisted four in 27 Premier League games across 2023/24, with his displays earning him a call-up to England's provisional Euro 2024 squad. The 25-year-old has been a standout option at Palace for several years now, earning high praise from teammate Joel Ward in 2023.

“Ebs’ quality is incredible, with what he does on the ball, the way he manipulates it and the way he just seems to glide over the pitch – it’s mesmerising at times. It’s fully deserved, and he’s doing the other side of the game as well, which we need him to do in midfield. He’s taking control and linking up beautifully with the front guys. All-round, he’s developing, he’s moving up, and his future will be very, very bright. They certainly make my life a little bit easier when I can just give them the ball, and they go and do their magic!”

Eze is under contract at Selhurst Park until 2027. However, according to the report from Football Transfers, the 25-year-old expects Palace to honour an agreement to let him leave if Tottenham meet the club's asking price of approximately €70 million (£60m), with Spurs ready to make an early move.

Arsenal women season preview 2024-25: The onus is on Jonas Eidevall's Gunners to challenge for the WSL title

After an underwhelming 2023-24, Arsenal will be expected to achieve far better things as the new campaign gets underway

There is a cliche that while teams can't win titles in the first few weeks of the season, they can certainly lose them. Last year, Arsenal's early results might not have fitted that exactly, but when a shock elimination in Champions League qualifying was followed by an equally surprising defeat to Liverpool at the Emirates Stadium, it absolutely set the tone for an underwhelming campaign that the Gunners will be eager to bounce back from this time around.

A faster start will be imperative for success in 2024-25 because the schedule Jonas Eidevall's side are working with is unforgiving. On Sunday, Arsenal begin the new Women's Super League season against Manchester City, last year's runners-up. Four days later, they need to overcome a 1-0 deficit from the first leg of their Champions League second round qualifier with Hacken to reach the group stage. A couple of weeks after that, Chelsea, champions of the last five seasons, will make the short journey across London to visit the Gunners.

Straight out of the blocks, there will be little room for error for an Arsenal side that, as the most successful club in the English women's game, is always under pressure to deliver. Five years since a last WSL triumph and eight years since the Gunners lifted the Women's FA Cup for a record-extending 14th time, can Eidevall's charges live up to expectations this season?

Getty ImagesMood around the club

There is a lot of positivity surrounding Arsenal ahead of the new WSL season. Though Vivianne Miedema has departed and the strong links with England star Keira Walsh didn't result in a transfer, the club had a great summer window, strengthening the squad in several areas with some impressive signings. Leah Williamson, Beth Mead and Laura Wienroither, who all suffered ACL ruptures during 2022-23 and thus returned midway through the last campaign, have all got full pre-seasons under their belts and the first round of Champions League qualifying saw the team put on impressive displays against Rangers and Rosenborg.

However, amid this positivity there is a sense of expectation. While Arsenal have been steady in the last couple of seasons, winning back-to-back League Cups and securing European football through top-three finishes, this team can achieve more. The Gunners haven't sustained a genuine title challenge since the 2021-22 campaign and last year's Champions League exit in the first round of qualifying was hugely disappointing.

For some supporters, this feels like a make or break season for head coach Jonas Eidevall to prove he is the right person to take this team forward. They want a title challenge, they want to win more than the League Cup and they want to be in the UWCL proper again. That said, it is unlikely the club view things the same way, having handed Eidevall a new long-term contract last September, just days after that shock European elimination.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesTransfer business

It's fair to say Arsenal's summer didn't start in particularly positive fashion, when it was announced that iconic forward Miedema would be leaving the club. While she has since explained that her departure was a mutual thing, rather than the club simply not offering her a new contract, it was still understandably disappointing for fans to see such a talented player leave, not least because she has now joined WSL rivals Man City. With the two giants going head to head on the opening weekend of the league campaign, it seems written in the stars for Miedema to come back to haunt her old club.

Cloe Lacasse's departure wasn't particularly popular either. Many felt the Canada international didn't get the chances she deserved in her only season at the club, especially given how well she played when granted them. Her exit also means Arsenal lack natural depth on the right of attack.

However, there is plenty for fans to be excited about when it comes to Arsenal's signings. Mariona Caldentey is a world-class operator who played a key role in Barcelona winning a first-ever quadruple on the women's side last season, while the versatile forward also has a World Cup title to her name after helping Spain to beat England in last summer’s final. Rosa Kafaji, a thrillingly creative talent who is still only 21 years old, further bolsters the attack following her arrival from Hacken.

Further back, the Gunners have also strengthened the goalkeeping department by recruiting Netherlands international Daphne van Domselaar. Eidevall has brought in, and let go, a whole host of shot-stoppers during his time in charge, seemingly searching for the perfect fit. This summer has been no different, with Sabrina D'Angelo joining Aston Villa, Van Domselaar's former club, while the Dutchwoman has arrived in the capital. Aged 24, she has her best years ahead of her and Arsenal fans will hope she has them in north London.

USA TODAY SportsPre-season performances

Due to Arsenal's participation in the first round of Champions League qualifying, pre-season was pretty short and sharp compared to some others in the WSL. The Gunners flew out to the United States for games against the Washington Spirit, of the NWSL, and London rivals Chelsea, faced Championship side Southampton at home a week later and then went straight into European qualifiers against Rangers and Rosenborg.

Because a good handful of players were involved at the Olympic Games, which ended just eight days before Arsenal's match against Washington, it wasn't a perfect pre-season campaign. It was longer than last year's, when most of the squad needed a break after the Women's World Cup, but still involved late arrivals, the management of some players' minutes and slight injuries to Lotte Wubben-Moy, Beth Mead and Steph Catley, which limited the group's ability to work on building relationships.

Despite that, there were a number of positives to take away, not least the fact that players like Williamson, Wienroither and Mead got proper pre-seasons. Katie Reid's performances were encouraging as the teenager prepares to have a squad role this season, covering for Amanda Ilestedt's maternity leave, while Alessia Russo had goals to her name, boosting her confidence going into the campaign.

Arsenal certainly looked sharper as pre-season moved along and that continued into their European qualifiers, with the performances in victories over Rangers and Rosenborg largely positive. That said, some cold water was poured on such optimism earlier this week, when the Gunners lost 1-0 to Hacken in the away leg of their second round qualifier. They'll need to beat the Swedish side by two goals or more when they come to London next Thursday.

Getty ImagesTalking tactics

There is one main tactical talking point when it comes to Arsenal and that is how they struggle to break down opponents that defend in a low block. It cost the Gunners on several occasions last season, with defeats to Liverpool, West Ham and Tottenham leaving Eidevall's side on the back foot in the title race for the whole campaign.

Two signings made this summer could be particularly valuable in trying to solve this problem. Caldentey knows the challenge well from her time at Barcelona and, more recently, in playing for world champions Spain. When GOAL asked Laia Codina, formerly her club-mate and still her international team-mate, if Caldentey will help Arsenal in their struggles here, she was certain. "Yes, 100 percent, with her movements off the ball or with the ball," she replied. "She's a player that is very smart, very intelligent and trying to understand what the games will ask."

Kafaji could be a real asset, too. A creative midfielder who is full of flicks and tricks but also has convincing end product, she is a joker in the pack that opponents will struggle to predict. When combined with an "evolution" of the team that he spoke highly of, perhaps it's no wonder that Eidevall has expressed no concerns about low blocks this season, then. "I’m super confident that if we come up against a low block then we have tools and qualities and processes on how to play against that," he said at the WSL season launch media day last week. "I have full belief."

Something else that will be particularly interesting to track as the season begins is what the right of Arsenal's attack looks like if it doesn't involve Mead. The sale of Lacasse means the squad lacks natural depth in that position, though there was an incredibly encouraging performance from Caitlin Foord on that side against Rangers this month, when she scored four goals. Usually more effective on the left, it would be a huge boost to Eidevall's options if the Australia international can find consistency on the opposite flank, too.

'Match-fixing law will be a game-changer in India'

ICC anti-corruption officer Steve Richardson wants the Indian government to criminalise corruption in sport

Nagraj Gollapudi24-Jun-2020

Betting is illegal in India, but experts say the law governing it is ‘laughable’ in its current form•BCCI

Making match-fixing a criminal offence will be a “game-changer” and the “single-most-effective thing” for sport in India. That is the strong belief of Steve Richardson, the coordinator of investigations at the ICC’s anti-corruption unit (ACU). Ajit Singh, the head of the BCCI’s ACU, concurs with that viewpoint, adding that India also needs a “very strong law” against betting, which is believes is the source of corruption in cricket in India. With India scheduled to host two global marquee men’s events in the next three years – the 2021 T20 World Cup followed by the ODI World Cup in 2023 – Richardson urged the Indian government to consider creating a match-fixing law for sport like its neighbour Sri Lanka. In 2019 Sri Lanka became the first major cricket-playing country in South Asia to criminalise match-fixing with punishments including a 10-year prison sentence. The ICC ACU had helped the then Sri Lanka government to draft the legislation in the wake of extensive investigations that found several Lankan cricketers including former captain Sanath Jayasuriya guilty of breaching the corruption code.”India has got two ICC global events coming up: the T20 World Cup [in 2021] and the World Cup in 2023,” Richardson said. “At the moment with no legislation in place, we’ll have good relations with Indian police, but they are operating with one hand tied behind their back. We will do everything we can to disrupt the corruptors. And we do, we make life very, very difficult for them as far and as much as we can to stop them from operating freely.”But the legislation would be a game-changer in India. We have currently just under 50 investigations. The majority of those have links back to corruptors in India. So it would be the single-most-effective thing to happen in terms of protecting sport if India introduces match-fixing legislation.”Both Richardson and Singh were participating in a panel discussion on the subject of ‘Does India need a match-fixing legislation?’ as part of the Sports Law & Policy Symposium held on June 20. The rest of the panel comprised Supreme Court lawyer Rebecca John, who represented Sreesanth in the IPL spot-fixing case, senior journalist Pradeep Magazine, and Suhrith Parthasarthy, a lawyer in the Madras High Court.More than the players, Richardson stressed the law would deter the corruptors, who he said were right now freely moving around. “I could actually deliver to the Indian police or the Indian government now at least eight names of people who are what I would term serial offenders, constantly approaching players to try and get them to fix matches,” Richardson said. “At the moment with the lack of legislative framework in India it is very limited what the police can do, and to that extent they have my great sympathy because they try as professionally and hard as they can to make the existing legislation work, but the reality is it wasn’t framed with sports corruption in mind.”So the reason that there is an imperative for legislation specific to match-fixing – yes, it is about the players, but more importantly it is about those outside the sport who actually corrupt the players and are organising and pulling the strings of these networks. Those are the people I would like to see dealt with under match-fixing law.”Mohammad Amir, Salman Butt and Mohammad Asif were prosecuted under the 1906 Prevention of Corruption Act•Getty Images

To support his stance, Richardson provided the example of the Bribery Act in the UK, which was used to prosecute former Pakistan batsman Nasir Jamshed, who pleaded guilty to charges of bribery in the PSL. Jamshed was handed a 17-month sentence in February by a Manchester court. In 2010, the Pakistan trio of Salman Butt, Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Amir were prosecuted under the 1906 Prevention of Corruption Act which was repealed by the Bribery Act.”I see this from a slightly different perspective inasmuch as I do not see the players as the main problem when it comes to match-fixing,” Richardon said. “The players are the final link in the chain who actually would go out on to the pitch and perform any act if they had agreed to do so. The problem that I see is further upstream and it’s in the people who are organising the corruption, people who are paying the players the money, and most of those sit outside of the sport.”‘No adequate law to cover match-fixing’As far Singh was concerned, he said the BCCI’s ACU could do “little” as far as the “non-participants” were concerned. But Singh, a former Indian Police Service officer, who served as DGP Rajasthan before taking charge at the BCCI in 2018, agreed that there had been “no adequate law to cover match-fixing”, which both the federal government as well as the courts have recognised previously. In 2013, the then Indian government even presented a draft bill for the prevention of sporting fraud, but it has not been acted on subsequently. The draft bill covers the definition of sporting fraud, the perpetrators, and the punishment – which can extend to five years of imprisonment, a fine of INR 10 lakh or five times the benefit derived from the sporting fraud. In 2016, the RM Lodha Committee, which drew up the framework that paved way for the structural reform of the BCCI, told the Supreme Court that the Law Commission of India (LCI) should look into criminalising match-fixing in sport. Two years later, the LCI agreed that match-fixing of any kind in sport, including cricket, should be a criminal offence carrying significant punishment. Calling gambling and betting two sides of the same coin, the LCI also recommended to the Indian government that it consider regulating betting and gambling activities as against imposing complete prohibition.”So definitely there is a requirement for a law which criminalises match-fixing,” Singh said. According to Singh, the roots of match-fixing lie in betting, which he described as a “malaise” in India.”Just to make windfall gains illegally in an illegal way through betting they [corruptors] approach the participants – it could be a player, it could be a curator, it could be a match official, whoever. And the amounts of the money involved are unimaginable.”Betting law – ‘totally archaic and the punishments are laughable’Singh said unverified accounts indicate annual turnover from betting in India is in the range of INR 30-40,000 crores. Singh pointed out that the corrupters were not just operating in international sport, but were also busy influencing players and matches in domestic cricket with some even posing as “godfathers” to young playersSingh said the BCCI’s ACU had used data agencies like Sportradar to examine the extent of betting in some T20 matches in Indian domestic cricket. “It’s not the IPL, but it’s the state leagues. It (betting) comes to the tune of maybe [up to 20 million] euros or pounds. So the amount of betting even in small matches is so much that the temptation to fall prey to the demands or requests of these people is very high. And it is more so with people who don’t see much of a future for themselves.”Cricket is played in rural areas and mofussil towns and there are certain godfathers have come to finance them. They see a promising player, finance the player, become his patron, and ultimately what happens is when he is at a level where his games are televised, where he has made it to a certain league, then they extract the pound of flesh. So it needs to be curbed heavily, both at the match-fixing and betting level.”As it happens betting is illegal in India, but Singh pointed out it was governed by a law that was “laughable” in its current form. The law is the 1867 Public Gambling Act. Those breaching it barely blink an eye, Singh said, with only a cursory monetary penalty to pay. “We need to make a very strong law against betting. Right now the law that exists is totally archaic and the punishments in it are laughable. You impose a fine of INR 200 or 500 and that’s the end of it.”Both John and Richardson agreed that the Gambling Act ought to be replaced as soon as possible. “Its quite an anomaly that you can bet INR 500 on the outcome of a match for a side to win/lose in India and that would be illegal,” Richardson said. “However, if you offer USD 30,000 to a player to underperform in that match then there is nothing illegal in that.”Richardson pointed out that betting and corruption should been seen as separate only because betting was legal in many countries. “We have to be very, very clear here that betting itself is not corruption. So what is corruption is people who are trying to get to players to corrupt them in order to make money from betting.”Singh said part of the proposed law against sports corruption should comprise a “specialised” investigating agency, “which keeps a proper database, which can join the dots, which when it sees an alert raised on its screen so it could investigate. Also the law is to facilitate better investigation and better appreciation of what evidence can be collected and what evidence is available.”

West Ham leading race for £50m "lion" who’s perfect for Lopetegui

It feels like a hefty weight has been lifted from West Ham United, with Julen Lopetegui agreeing a deal to become the club's manager from the start of next season.

Stamford Bridge sang in unison – 'cheerio, cheerio, cheerio' – as West Ham were thrashed 5-0 in the Premier League last weekend, condemning an already doomed David Moyes to an exit at the end of his contract this summer.

The deal for Lopetegui has not yet been finalised but his announcement is a formality at this stage, with West Ham confirming Moyes' departure after final fixtures against Luton Town and Manchester City this month.

Now, Tim Steidten, Mark Noble and co can begin the process of strengthening the team across the summer, with plans already being drawn up for an exciting target.

West Ham lead race for PL star

According to a recent report from Football Transfers, West Ham have received a major boost in their bid to sign Ivan Toney, with Manchester United exiting the race for the Brentford striker.

Now leading the race alongside London rivals Tottenham Hotspur, the Hammers are primed to launch a £50m bid for the Premier League star in what would be a stunning introduction to life under Lopetegui.

Brentford striker Ivan Toney

Spurs will turn to centre-forward to resolve last year's sale of Harry Kane, but West Ham can offer a first-choice place at the front, with Michail Antonio out of contract this summer and Danny Ings up for sale for £6.5m.

Ivan Toney's Premier League career

Toney has long been regarded as a high-level striker, clearly playing above his level with Peterborough Town and Brentford before their promotion to the Premier League, but he has solidified his status as one of the country's finest with his exploits over the past several campaigns.

Landing such a player would be the perfect way to kickstart a new era in east London, with the aforementioned Irons forwards both ageing and lacking in pure prolific ability, forcing winger slash striker Jarrod Bowen to be saddled with the weight of sourcing the bulk of West Ham's goals.

Toney's exemplary 2022/23 campaign was cut short following charges from the FA relating to betting breaches, suspending the England international for eight months.

He'd been hailed for his "monster" performances up front by his manager Thomas Frank and transcended mere goalscoring by producing some emphatic, all-encompassing displays.

Last season in the English top flight, Kane was the only centre-forward to create more chances (14) than Toney (12), with the 28-year-old winning a whopping 6.7 duels per game, as per Sofascore, to underscore his value as a tenacious and committed player.

Antonio, who is renowned for his physicality and tough approach in the final third, averages 4.2 successful duels per fixture in the Premier League this season, emphasising Toney's quality and how he would slot into the way of things at West Ham.

Returning from his lengthy suspension in January, the £20k-per-week star emphatically placed four goals from his first five matches, though his subsequent barren spell of ten matches without scoring, still ongoing, has typified his side's struggles and perhaps Toney's desire to ply his trade elsewhere next season.

How Ivan Toney would fit in at West Ham

Praised for having the "mindset of a lion" by Frank, Toney indeed boasts the predatory instinct to propel him to the forefront of the Premier League once again, and moving to West Ham might just offer him the best chance to do so.

Prominent Spanish journalist Guillem Balague has sung Lopetegui's praises. Indeed, the 57-year-old has the tools and European trophy-winning experience to ensure that West Ham's fruitful period is continued over the coming campaigns.

The former Wolverhampton Wanderers boss seems to have been pigeonholed as a 'defensive manager', but this is far from the truth. Lopetegui likes possession, control and creativity, and while he demands a solid base, he also strives for slick, interchangeable attacking play.

As per Sky Sports' Adam Bate, Lopetegui's success at Sevilla – in which he notably won the Europa League – was achieved 'by making them a much more fluent passing side' with 'the emphasis on possession', thus indicating the approach he could take at the London Stadium.

Toney is equipped to thrive in such a role, with his dynamic qualities attracting interest from many of England's top outfits for good reason.

As per FBref, Toney ranks among the top 19% of centre-forwards across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for passes attempted, the top 21% for progressive passes and the top 1% for interceptions per 90, further highlighting his quality as a rounded player.

Brentford striker Ivan Toney.

These certainly aren't the most eye-catching metrics in the world but there's no question that Toney is languishing in a struggling Brentford side, and a move to West Ham could see him return to the lofty heights of seasons past.

Lucas Paqueta is likely headed for the exit this summer with Manchester City pursuing an £85m deal, but such funds could be used to facilitate an ambitious move for the Bees man.

The club still have creativity in abundance in the form of Bowen, James Ward-Prowse, Mohammed Kudus and more, and will surely move to sign a fresh playmaker following Paqueta's expected sale.

Toney would be the cherry on the top, allowing Bowen to star in his usual position on the right. Moyes might be leaving but by sealing this deal, West Ham will continue to push and probe against those at the forefront of the Premier League.

Everton now eyeing move to sign "incredible" star who’s outscored DCL

Having all but secured another season in the Premier League even in the face of point deductions, Everton have turned their attention towards the summer transfer window, where they could finally end their attacking problems.

Everton transfer news

Those at Goodison Park will hope to see their push for safety followed up by some positive news regarding 777 Partners' prospective takeover, which has been awaiting Premier League approval for the majority of the campaign. Then, the Toffees could begin to think about further positives in the summer transfer window.

Dyche must sell Everton's forgotten flop who earns 2x more than McNeil

For now, the headlines are still being owned by the potential departures of Amadou Onana and Jarrad Branthwaite in two big-money moves to ease Everton's financial concerns ever so slightly. The latter has enjoyed a particularly impressive campaign, attracting the interest of Tottenham Hotspur and even European giants Real Madrid as a result, though it remains to be seen if he decides to depart Everton this summer.

Those sales would at least hand Sean Dyche a summer budget of his own to spend in an attempt to solve a number of problems in his current squad, including finding a reliable goalscorer.

With that said, according to Football Transfers, Everton are eyeing a move to sign Sammie Szmodics, who has enjoyed an excellent campaign with Blackburn Rovers in the Championship and is on course to win the Golden Boot. Scoring 25 Championship goals, Szmodics has even outscored Erling Haaland in league action, albeit in a division below, with the Manchester City star netting 21 goals so far this season.

Sammie Szmodics

After such an impressive year, it remains to be seen just how much Blackburn will demand for their forward, in what could quickly turn into a blow for the Toffees. Once again, 777's takeover could be crucial in pursuit of such a deal.

"Incredible" Szmodics can end Calvert-Lewin frustration

Whilst injuries haven't helped, Dominic Calvert-Lewin has quickly become a point of weakness for Everton, who have been left relying on a forward struggling to find the back of the net on a consistent basis. Szmodics, however, has been handing Blackburn the exact opposite, even as they fight for Championship survival.

What's most concerning about these numbers is Calvert-Lewin's expected goals against the number of goals that he's actually managed so far this season. The numbers indicate that the Everton forward is underperforming significantly, whereas Szmodics is overperforming. And that's the difference in quality that the Blackburn star can provide.

Former Blackburn boss Jon Dahl Tomasson knew all about that quality, previously praising Szmodics, saying (via Limerick Live): "After Christmas last season, I think he’s been really good for Rovers and after the summer holiday, he’s been extremely good. He’s also added those goals.

"We always know he can score goals but he’s not used to playing a lot of games at this level first of all, he played with Peterborough but not a lot. The way he’s scoring goals, the confidence he’s playing with and the role he takes as one of the senior players is quite incredible."

Cape Town Blitz fold for 84 as Paarl Rocks cruise to handsome win

Henry Davids and Faf du Plessis top scored before a complete bowling performance sealed the win

The Report by Firdose Moonda10-Nov-2019After defeating the defending champions in the season opener on Friday night, the Cape Town Blitz were rudely brought back down to earth by their nearest rivals, the Paarl Rocks, on Sunday. The Blitz were dismissed for 84 – the lowest total in the competition’s short history – inside 16 overs, in chase of 171. That meant the Rocks took the early Western Cape derby bragging rights, and sit at the top of the points table.Home-boy gives the home-side a start Henry Davids is the best-known member of the Rocks’ XI that is actually from the area so it was fitting that he gave them what turned into a match-winning start. Davids and Cameron Delport’s opening stand was worth 41 runs in 27 balls and included an impressive assault on Test players Vernon Philander and Dale Steyn. Davids took two fours and a six off Philander’s opening spell while Delport took four fours off Steyn before being dismissed by another international, Anrich Nortje. Davids was then joined by captain Faf du Plessis, with whom he shared a second-wicket stand of 38. Interestingly, both Davids and du Plessis had the joint-top score, also 38.Blitz pull it backThe Rocks raced to 107 for 3 midway through the 10th over before a suicidal attempt at a second run saw Faf du Plessis run out and sparked a collapse. In the next 9.3 overs, Rocks lost seven wickets and scored 63 runs, with George Linde playing a starring role in slowing them down. Linde had Hardus Viljoen stumped for 4, Mangaliso Mosehle trapped lbw attempting a slog-sweep and took the catch at long-off that ended Isuru Udana’s innings, off Anrich Nortje. Both Nortje and Linde claimed three wickets, giving the Blitz a chaseable target.Rocks start with short-ball trapViljoen, who played one Test for South Africa against England before going down the Kolpak route, is known for aggressive, quick bowling and a mean bouncer and he used that to make early inroads into the Blitz’s line-up. Quinton de Kock was caught at backward point, cutting a short, wide ball in Viljoen’s first over and Janneman Malan, after scoring back-to-back boundaries off Viljoen was caught behind attempting a pull off a short ball in his second. You can take the bowler away from the bounce of South African wickets but you can’t take the bounce out of the bowler when he gets back on them, it seems.Blitz spun outAt 56 for 5 at the halfway mark, it looked as though the Blitz were facing an uphill and Tabraiz Shamsi made it even steeper with his spell. He took 3 for 16 in three overs to stamp out all hope the Blitz would have had and to keep his name in the conversation when it comes to the national T20 side. Shamsi took a simple return catch off the second ball he bowled when Mohammad Nawaz chipped the ball back to him, beat Magala outside off to bowl him and had Linde stumped after coming down the track to a delivery that turned across him. The Blitz lost 5 for 27 in 27 balls to hand the Rocks a handsome, 86-run win.
