Axar Patel 11-for sees India surge to 2-1 series lead in two-day Test

England made their lowest Test score in India on the way to a ten-wicket defeat

Andrew Miller25-Feb-2021Manic, manic, manic. The speed of the final act of the third Test was, on the one hand, a gross misrepresentation of the extraordinary mayhem that had preceded it. As Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill flogged a dispirited and under-resourced England spin attack to all corners, picking off a paltry target of 49 in 7.4 overs and with ten wickets in hand, it might have appeared to any latecomers that India’s dominance in home-spun conditions had been entirely, and predictably, unchallenged. But on the other hand, that final flurry was a perfectly crazy denouement to a match that had been accelerating all the way through like a pair of brawlers tumbling down a flight of stairs – a contest wrapped up, with a vast six over wide long-on from Rohit, only minutes after tea on the second day of action, making the shortest completed Test match since 1935, after 17 wickets had tumbled in the first two sessions of the day, and 30 in the first five all told.In any ordinary contest, any one of the day’s top lines would have sufficed to hold the attention, and lure in the plaudits. There was Joe Root, England’s most likely source of a revival but in his most unlikely guise, claiming the astonishing figures of 5 for 8 in 6.2 overs, the second-most economical five-for by a spinner in Test history, and the first by an England captain since Bob Willis in 1983.There was R Ashwin, who rumbled through to 400 Test wickets in the course of England’s second-innings subsidence to 81 all out – the fourth Indian to reach the landmark, and the second-quickest of any nationality after Muttiah Muralitharan. And bowling in tandem with him for all but four balls of the innings was Axar Patel – at the opposite end of his career – who was denied a hat-trick by DRS but could still console himself with match figures of 11 for 80, including his third five-for in a row.Related

Race to WTC final: England out, India closing in

Stitch all of those landmarks and stand-out moments together, and the upshot was a contest of blink-and-you-miss-it entertainment. A more manic sequence of events than the most fluctuating IPL clash could ever serve up, and if there will be some inevitable grumblings about the surface on which it all played out, there’s still something captivating about watching your lottery numbers roll in.What England would have given for another 50 runs in their abject first innings – or for an extra frontline spinner to apply the knowhow required to turn the screw in that harum-scarum fourth innings, when Root’s status as a part-timer was finally exposed by circumstance. Instead, they’ll have to settle for the pyrrhic victory that comes with putting up a fight when most of the world had given them up for dead already. There’s still a series to be squared on this same ground next week, after all.The day had dawned as it would finish, with England pinned to the ropes – an impression hardly improved when Rohit, as dominant then as he would be at the end, slammed the habitually un-cuttable James Anderson through the covers twice in an over to bring up India’s 100, and reduce what remained of England’s paltry lead to single figures. But that would prove to be the death of certainty as far as batting would go for the rest of the day – for the rest of the match – as the contest was cranked open like a can of wriggly red-earth-burrowing worms. Not for the first time in this series, it was the unassuming Jack Leach who scotched all preconceptions. By matching the methods that had already served Patel so well, he scalped both of India’s overnight batsman with balls that skidded on through – Ajinkya Rahane nailed on the back pad attempting to cut, and Rohit down on one knee for a yawning slog-sweep one over later. The die was cast as far as England were concerned, and into the attack came an even less assuming weapon. Root had claimed 32 wickets in his previous 101 Tests, although his preferred method, of undercutting the ball from round the wicket, with his slightly round-arm action, has rarely failed to be a challenge in the right conditions.Axar Patel took 11 wickets in the match•BCCI

His first delivery, to Rishabh Pant, could not have been more perfectly targeted had it been a T20 match-up. A vicious spitting spinner to the left-hander, luring his ever-aggressive hands into action before cuffing the edge for Ben Foakes to cling onto another effortlessly tough take. And before he’d even conceded a run, Root had two more – Washington Sundar bowled for a duck by a snorter that gripped and straightened to nail the top of off, and Patel, flinging the bat through the line second-ball, and picking out Dom Sibley at short cover.India, all of a sudden, had lost five wickets for 11 runs, and now it was a race to the bottom, as Ashwin reprised the loose-limbed bat-flinging that had set up his superb century in the second Test. He died as he had lived, caught off a top-edge at deep square to give Root his fourth, but not before he’d picked off 17 runs that would prove exponentially precious the longer the day wore on.Ishant Sharma took the same cue, lumping the first six of the match over long-off before Root trapped Jasprit Bumrah in front of leg. Just as England had stumbled from 74 for 2 to 112 all out in their first innings, so India’s own innings had gone the same way – 145 all out, their last eight scalped for 47. A lead of 33 was not neither here nor there … was it?And yet, if that was a crazy passage of action, we had seen absolutely nothing yet – like an over-hyped hen party at a comedy club, thinking the MC’s warm-up wisecracks were the most side-splitting jokes they’d ever heard. They hadn’t reckoned for Zak Crawley and Jonny Bairstow against Patel and the new ball. Nobody had, to be frank.Crawley, England’s one shining light in that abject first innings, faced up to the first ball with confidence seemingly brimming. But the shot he produced was paralysed by uncertainty, as he slid back to another wicket-to-wicket dart, and neither played for the spin nor the one that sped straight on. His middle stump quickly discovered that it had been the latter.Out came Bairstow, on a pair, and out of practice after his less-than-ideally-timed spell of R&R following a decent Sri Lanka series. His opening gambit was a horrific mow of a sweep shot – the right intent maybe, but clearly the wrong choice on a pitch where even Root has shelved his go-to stroke. Up went the finger as the ball slapped his right hip, and Patel was celebrating a hat-trick, having cleaned up Foakes at the end of the first innings. However, Bairstow reviewed and somehow, the ball was shown to skidding over middle stump. No matter. Patel simply returned to the top of his mark, and speared another skidder through the widest gate south of Mumbai. England were unequivocally 0 for 2 this time, and even the most masochistic sports fans were pleading for the action to slow down so that they could taste the drama before it was swallowed whole. For a time therefore, Sibley played within himself – assuming that’s not a tautology. But then, suddenly and without warning, he too planted that front dog for a massive wipe across the line at Ashwin. The shot was arguably the correct one – the ball was outside the line of off so lbw wasn’t on. Unfortunately, this was not one that skidded, it bit violently for Pant to cling onto a blinder behind the stumps.Sibley thought he hadn’t hit it, but UltraEdge implied otherwise and he had to go. And as Ben Stokes marched out to join Root, England were still 14 runs shy of parity, with no guarantees that an innings defeat wasn’t still on the cards.Stokes, to his credit, adjusted his approach from the meek surrender that had ended his first-innings effort. With Root watching the ball like a hawk – and surviving a very tight lbw review on 16, after he was deemed to have grazed an inside-edge – Stokes set about disrupting the spinners with his range of aggressive sweeps – conventional and reverse alike. But his nemesis Ashwin wasn’t going to be held back for long, and on 25, another non-spinner skipped into his planted front foot – it was the 11th time Stokes had been dismissed by Ashwin, and it was a body blow for England’s hopes of a 100-plus lead. One over later, and England’s goose was as good as cooked, as Patel sealed his ten-for with another slider into Root’s knee-roll. As mighty as Ollie Pope may one day prove to be at this level, he completed a Test to forget as Ashwin outfoxed him for the second time in the match, pushing another non-spinner across his bows to pluck the off stump. When Archer lined up a sweep that was too full for the stroke, Ashwin was into the 400-club and India were deep into the tail.Leach did not stand on ceremony, with a startling six over long-on off Patel, as he and Foakes tried to chisel something defendable. But after each had fallen in quick succession to the main men, Virat Kohli tossed the ball to the hitherto invisible Sundar, who rewarded his skipper’s faith by luring Anderson into a muffed reverse sweep. England were 81 all out, and 193 for the match – their lowest aggregate in a completed Test in India. There could be no coming back from that. And so it proved. A two-over foray before the dinner break might, with a bit of luck, have ratcheted up the tension, but instead it dissipated before our eyes as Anderson at point fumbled to get Rohit off the mark, before Root speared four wayward byes past even Foakes’ trusty gloves. And with the jeopardy gone, Rohit and Gill were able to finish the match with an insouciant flourish. Next to none of it had made any sense at all.

Sydney Sixers vs Perth Scorchers: how the BBL Qualifier could be won

Sydney Sixers and Perth Scorchers are unequivocally the two best BBL teams and Saturday night’s Qualifier looms as a mouth-watering clash. It also has huge ramifications in the title race. The teams split their two meetings this season based on where they were played. The Scorchers thumped the Sixers in Perth, but the Sixers provided an emphatic response in their second meeting at Manuka Oval. The Qualifier will be played at Manuka Oval but the winner will gain direct entry to the BBL final and will also get to host it. The reward for winning is massive. After a 14-game regular season, there is plenty of evidence as to how the two teams are likely to line up, but these are three key areas that could decide the contest with views from the BBL’s player acquisition and cricket consultant Trent Woodhill.New-ball Powerplays vitalThe game could well be decided in the two Powerplays. Jhye Richardson and Jason Behrendorff have been arguably the best new-ball pairing in the competition with Richardson claiming the most wickets in this year’s BBL. Jackson Bird has 19 Powerplay wickets in BBL history – just one behind leader Josh Lalor – and Steve O’Keefe has been straggling teams and Ben Dwarshuis was Player of the Match in the win over the Melbourne Stars thanks to his Powerplay exploits. Both sides have explosive Powerplay batting with Josh Philippe and James Vince looming large for the Sixers while Jason Roy, Liam Livingstone, and Colin Munro have been setting games up for the Scorchers.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

“I think it’s whoever bowls the best, not so much in the Surge, I reckon it’s actually the Powerplay,” Woodhill said.”If Richardson has a day out and gets through Philippe and Vince then it brings Hughes and Henriques in early. But the same can be said about Ben Dwarshuis, if he deals with the threat of that top four from Perth.”Behrendorff may be the big threat for Philippe. Left-arm pace is his significant weakness, averaging just 19.66 against it and striking at 104.42. Behrendorff knocked him over for 5 in Perth. Three of Philippe’s five dismissals for single-figure scores in this BBL have been against left-arm seamers with Sam Rainbird dismissing him in the last game against the Stars in the first over while James Faulkner trapped Philippe lbw for 1 in the first game of the season.Related

Targeting the weak linksBoth sides have extraordinary depth but both teams have areas that can be exploited. The Sixers have proven as a batting unit they can win games after batting collapses. But against the Scorchers they may not get the same breathing room to rebuild as they have against other bowling attacks and may need to target a bowler.”Where they’re [both] good, there’s no weakness,” Woodhill said. “You look as a batting unit, who are you going to target, who is the fifth bowler. For Sydney, they will target Aaron Hardie, and depending on the surface, they might have to target Fawad Ahmed as well. AJ Tye, Behrendorff, and Richardson are tough.”Hardie and Tye were collared by the Sixers in the win at Manuka and Hardie was also targeted by the Melbourne Stars at the MCG. That’s forced Scorchers captain Ashton Turner to get creative without the ability to turn to Mitchell Marsh as a sixth bowl. Livingstone has bowled overs in three of the last four games for the Scorchers and could be called upon again. Turner may be reluctant to use himself with only one left-hander to bowl at.Jordan Silk’s form has been a crucial part of the Sixers’ ability to fight back•Getty Images

“Does the Perth team target Jackson Bird?” Woodhill said. “Or do they target another spinner?”The Scorchers did all three in the match in Canberra with Livingstone, Roy, and Munro clubbing nine fours and five sixes off Bird, O’Keefe, and Lloyd Pope but ran aground in the second half of the innings as the surface slowed up and Carlos Brathwaite, Dan Christian, and Jake Ball tied them down with slower balls. Will the X-Factor be used at all?</bThe Scorchers have hardly used the X-Factor all year trusting their first-choice XI to do the job for most of the year. They have only used 15 players in total and subbed Kurtis Patterson for his only game when Marsh injured his side. The Sixers may use their sub as they wrestle with the balance of their attack. The return of Dwarshuis and Sean Abbott saw them use Jake Ball as the sub in the last game against the Stars. They have also played Pope in both matches against the Scorchers with them having five right-handers in the top six and all of those, bar Josh Inglis, having a perceived weakness against legspin."The Sixers might bowl Jackson Bird upfront and then bring Pope in," Woodhill said. "Jackson's job is to bowl over No.1, hit the top of off. He's got more powerplay wickets than anyone in the competition. He might look to come in and take a wicket and then pull him if he's not successful."Do they stick with Jake Ball at the death or do they make him an X-Factor and play both Pope and Bird? That's the challenge. It's a cracker. I'm really excited. I can't split those two teams."

Endrick brutally left out of Brazil squad for World Cup qualifiers as teenager struggles for game time at Real Madrid

Brazil boss Dorival Jr has announced his squad for World Cup qualifiers against Venezuela and Uruguay but there is no room for Endrick. The 18-year-old has not featured in any of Real Madrid's last four games and is yet to start a La Liga match for Los Blancos this season. Endrick is not the only high-profile name missing from the squad. Neymar has also been omitted despite having successfully returned from a long spell out due to a knee injury.

Endrick has been left out of the Brazil squad for the first time since he made his debut for the national team in November 2023, while Real Madrid team-mate Vinicius Jr has returned after missing October's fixtures through injury and Chelsea-bound teenager Estevao Willian is also on the list. Endrick's lack of game time at the Santiago Bernabeu has cost him his place this time around, with Dorival Jr admitting that players must be featuring for their clubs if they are to be called up by Brazil.

WHAT DORIVAL JR HAS SAID

He told reporters: "Today he is in a moment of transition, in what is perhaps the biggest team in world football. It is a natural process that takes time. We all have to live with this decision. The doors of the Selecao are not closed to him, I have confidence in him and he knows it. What he has to do now is reposition himself in his club so that he can shine later. The club he joined is getting to know him better, Endrick is in a new environment and this, I insist, requires a certain amount of time. It's natural that if you don't play for your club, it creates a complicated situation. All the footballers have to be playing to be here in the Selecao."

Babar Azam's fluent fifty guides Karachi Kings to maiden PSL title

Captain Imad Wasim hits winning runs as Karachi cruise home in run chase

Danyal Rasool17-Nov-2020

Babar Azam pulls one away•PCB/PSL

How the game played outIf Karachi Kings’ owner Salman Iqbal were a scriptwriter, it’s unlikely he’d have had the imagination to plot out a Karachi Kings triumph in quite as deliciously satisfying a manner as this. Not only did Karachi Kings romp to their first PSL title at the fifth time of asking, they did so at home, and against arch-rivals Lahore Qalandars. What’s more, it was a boy from Lahore in Babar Azam who proved central to their victory, his sixth consecutive half-century ensuring there would be no jitters on the way to a below-par target. The title was sealed with eight balls and five wickets to spare, with Azam finally ensuring he’d stick around until his captain Imad Wasim knocked off the winning runs.Lahore Qalandars won the toss, and to the surprise of many, opted to bat first. It was the first time a side opted to do so in this year’s playoffs, and, with three of the first four finals won by chasing sides, appeared to fly in the face of history. Moreover, this was a used pitch, and it was evident from the outset that the Qalandars were unsure how it might play. Fakhar Zaman and Tamim Iqbal struggled to keep the runs ticking over, with the dot balls racking up as the pressure mounted.A 68-run opening partnership might appear ostensibly handy, but it isn’t when it takes half the innings to bring it up. Wasim was excellent in the way he kept mixing up his bowlers, who backed him up with their discipline and intensity. As Iqbal and Zaman both holed out off Umaid Asif – brought in to replace Wayne Parnell, leaving Karachi with only three overseas players in their side – in a pivotal 11th over, Lahore began to panic, and subsequently disintegrated. Seven wickets fell for 50 runs as Lahore once more began to resemble the side that finished bottom of the table four years in a row, while Karachi applied the pressure. To defend 135 – something they had never done before – Lahore needed the wicket of Azam, and the Pakistan skipper was in no mood to comply. Batting with the assuredness of someone who has almost forgotten what it’s like to score a half-century, he set the tone with a couple of boundaries off Shaheen Shah Afridi in the first over, and ticked the runs off efficiently thereafter. Lahore thought they were in the game when Alex Hales fell cheaply and Haris Rauf took two in two, but Azam ensured all that excitement would prove ephemeral.Team effort with the ballThis was billed as a contest between Lahore’s batsmen and Karachi’s fast bowlers, and Lahore skipper Sohail Akhtar raised the stakes when he decided we’d get that duel to start off. When Zaman walloped Mohammad Amir for a couple of early boundaries, it appeared Lahore’s batsmen were edging the contest, but a superbly disciplined bowling performance bogged Lahore down for the first half of the innings, before blowing them away in the second.Umaid Asif struck twice in one over•PCB/PSL

Amir might have been expensive, but the lesser-fancied Waqas Maqsood, Arshad Iqbal and Umaid Asif more than made up for it, each chipping in with two wickets while conceding just 62 runs between them across 12 overs. None of Lahore’s big hitters were allowed freebies, and under intense, relentless scrutiny from a trio that very much hunted as a pack, Lahore would find themselves ripped apart.Miss of the dayAside from Azam, it wasn’t really a day for the big names. Lahore Qalandars’ fancied batting line-up never managed to get off the ground in its entirety, with Iqbal, Zaman, Ben Dunk and David Wiese all missing out. Some might have pitched this as a contest between Amir and Shaheen Shah Afridi, but they were the two most expensive bowlers on the night, failing to take a wicket between them.Amir would suffer the ignominy of Afridi swiping him over cow corner for six before paddling him over short third man, but while Afridi flashed that endearing, infectious grin then, he’d later have it wiped off by Wasim, who knocked the winning boundary off his bowling. It might have been the most significant night in the competition’s history, but some of the biggest stars would want to forget it.Final standingsKarachi Kings won the PSL for the first time in the league’s history, following titles for Islamabad United (twice), Peshawar Zalmi and Quetta Gladiators. For Lahore Qalandars, who had finished bottom every season before this one, a second-placed finish was historic in its own right.

Bid submitted: Man Utd make move to sign "world-class" Rice clone

It’s fair to say that since the departure of Michael Carrick, Manchester United’s midfield has been sub-par.

Casemiro and Paul Pogba were big signings that never truly starred, and a Declan Rice-esque player is missing.

Declan Rice for Arsenal

The Arsenal midfielder is simply unbelievable; he is the driving force of the team, someone that the Red Devils desperately need.

With that in mind, let’s take a look at a Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS target who could become their very own Rice.

Man Utd’s midfield summer plans

It seems as though a midfield overhaul is set to occur at Old Trafford this summer, with Christian Eriksen and Sofyan Amrabat’s futures unclear.

Casemiro is another household name that could be on the move, with Saudi Arabia looking set to be a likely destination for the Brazilian.

As a result, a replacement must be acquired. Well, according to a report from FootballTransfers earlier this week, Man United are interested in signing Leon Goretzka.

Manchester United player Casemiro

Fortunately for United, Goretzka is one of the Bayern Munich players that will be allowed to leave the club this summer.

It’s said that United are keen to sign a partner for Kobbie Mainoo, who has experience; hence, Goretzka is a potential target.

leon-goretzka-transfer-gossip-manchester-united-bayern-munich-jude-bellingham-ten-hag

A bid has even been made for the player according to reports in Spain this weekend, with a £34m offer lodged at the request of Ten Hag.

How Leon Goretzka compares to Declan Rice

For over seven years now, Goretzka has been regarded as one of the most talented midfielders in the Bundesliga.

Even though the 29-year-old hasn’t always been the go-to, first-choice player at the heart of Bayern’s midfield, he’s always had a huge impact on the team.

Bayern Munich midfielder Leon Goretzka.

This was certainly the case last season, with Goretzka making 25 starts in the Bundesliga while also featuring ten times in the Champions League.

Throughout quite a few of those games towards the end of the season, the number eight partnered 20-year-old Aleksandar Pavlovic, which proves he can help guide a young-talented midfielder to success.

Nonetheless, according to FBref's 'similar players’ model, Goretzka’s name features alongside Rice’s. Looking at the table below, it's clear to see why,

Firstly, the pair are true all-rounders on the field, impacting the game at both boxes while also having the ability to play as a number eight or slightly deeper as a number six.

One of the biggest similarities that separates them from other positional peers is that they’ve both proved to be match-winners, scoring goals and also creating for the dangerous attackers.

Just like Rice, Goretzka is an extremely technical player who serves as a fantastic progressive outlet to the side, whether that be by playing passes through the lines or carrying the ball forward with intent.

Important, they are both extremely solid defensively, meaning that the duo lack any true faults in their game, hence why Goretzka in particular has been labelled a “world-class” player by journalist Stefan Bienkowski.

For just £34m, Man Utd could secure themselves an absolute bargain this summer, and considering he performs even remotely close to Rice, that is a huge green light.

England to hold talks with Adil Rashid about Test return, Chris Silverwood says

Head coach hasn’t ruled leg-spinner out of any possible tour of Sri Lanka and India in the winter

England will hold talks with Adil Rashid about the possibility of returning to the Test arena for proposed tours of Sri Lanka and India once their ODI series against Australia is over, Chris Silverwood says.Leg-spinner Rashid, who has not played a Test since January 2019 on England’s tour of the Caribbean, claimed 3 for 21 off his four overs to send a huge scare through Australia before the visitors scraped to victory in their final T20I at Southampton on Tuesday.Rashid’s performance led Moeen Ali, standing in as captain for the match in place of the injured Eoin Morgan, to declare, “when he’s bowling like that, I think he’s the best in the world”. It also continued a strong home summer for Rashid, who troubled Australia throughout their three-match T20I series, won 2-1 by England, and bowled well during the ODIs against Ireland.Echoing comments by national selector Ed Smith last month which indicated Rashid is on the Test radar despite not holding a red-ball contract, Silverwood, England’s head coach, revealed on Wednesday that Rashid’s path back to the long format could come via a red-ball training camp now that the Bob Willis Trophy competition is drawing to a close. With England hoping to tour Sri Lanka for two Tests – postponed earlier this year when the Covid-19 pandemic struck – and India in the coming winter, Rashid’s skill could prove to be in high demand for the tourists.Asked whether his stated desire to see Rashid play red-ball cricket before being selected in the Test side ruled him out of such a tour, Silverwood said: “Maybe not.””There’s a possibility of a red-ball camp with some competitive games on there,” Silverwood added. “Only a possibility mind you, depending on what’s happening around the world.”ALSO READ: Malan goes past Azam to top ICC rankingsRashid suffered a shoulder injury during the 2019 home summer and needed two cortisone injections to get through the World Cup. He underwent a lengthy rehabilitation period and, as recently as April, said he had decided to concentrate purely on white-ball cricket until September before reconsidering his options. He signed a white-ball only contract with Yorkshire for this year and his involvement with England’s limited-overs sides during a condensed season would have given him little or no opportunity to play on the red-ball county circuit anyway.Silverwood said he had been in discussions with Rashid about returning to the longer format but he wanted to put those talks on hold for the rest of the international summer, which concludes with three ODIs against Australia from Friday.”My thoughts on that situation remain the same,” Silverwood said. “I’d like to see him with a red ball in his hand before we select him. Conversations are ongoing, it’s slowly-slowly. What I don’t want to do is cloud what we are doing at the moment with conversations outside of white ball. Obviously I have got another chat to have, but I would like to see him play red ball-cricket before selecting him.”Asked if Rashid had an appetite to play red-ball cricket again, having gone through a long recovery from injury and declared his focus on white-ball cricket for now, Silverwood said: “They are ongoing conversations with Rash and I wouldn’t want to cloud too much what we are doing, we have a one-day series to win first and we will then hold those conversations.”Adil Rashid played an important role in England’s series win in Sri Lanka in 2018-19•Getty Images

Rashid is part of England’s 14-man squad for the ODI series against Australia in Manchester which also features the return of Jos Buttler from family leave and Jason Roy from a side strain. Morgan is expected to return after missing the third T20I after dislocating his finger in the second match.Dawid Malan was drafted into the England bubble as a reserve following his performance in the T20Is in which he amassed 129 runs, won a Player-of-the-Match award for his 66 in the first game and went to the top of the ICC world rankings for T20 batsmen. Saqib Mahmood and Phil Salt are the other reserves.Despite a hectic season squeezed into three months and compounded by the strict isolation protocols designed to prevent the spread of Covid-19, Silverwood expected his side would have no trouble lifting once more for the remaining matches, particularly with a view to the Ashes at the end of next year.”It’s Australia,” he said. “They are all up for it, they all want to play against Australia. They have a really good team over with them and it’s always competitive. I’m looking forward to a good one-day series.”The one thing everybody feels in the dressing room is any win over Australia is great. They are a top side, and are very difficult to beat. Anything we can get psychologically over them [before the Ashes] would be fantastic. One thing you can guarantee is that every time they play they will come out fighting.”

Chris Silverwood welcomes prospect of Pakistan tour after PCB chief issues invitation

Chris Silverwood says he would have “no problem” leading a tour to Pakistan, after Wasim Khan, the PCB chief executive, expressed his hope that England will send a T20 team to the country ahead of their next scheduled visit in 2022.England have not toured Pakistan since 2005-06 due to security concerns. But, before the Covid-19 pandemic, hopes had risen that they would return to the country in two years’ time, and Silverwood, the England head coach, has signalled his willingness to go.”For me it’s great that it’s a topic of conversation again,” Silverwood said. “We are looking to get back there.”Speaking on Sky Sports during the first day’s play at Emirates Old Trafford, Wasim had echoed the sentiments of West Indies’ captain, Jason Holder, who used his final press conference after last week’s third Test to call on the ECB to stage a reciprocal tour of the Caribbean in the wake of their own two-month tour.Pakistan, like West Indies, are helping the ECB fulfil their contractual obligations to Sky, at significant inconvenience to their own players, who have already been in the country for a month and remain in lockdown, and Silverwood said that he would be open to returning the favour.”Personally, I’d have no problem going,” he said. “I’ve never been so it would be nice to go and have a look. And I know our batsmen are looking forward to batting on their wickets. We are getting there [in terms of planning].”Speaking to ESPNcricinfo, Wasim said that he hoped England could send a T20 side to Pakistan. He accepted that “finding time in the FTP (future tours programme) could be the challenge at this stage” but suggested that a Lions tour, something he was calling for ahead of the dawn of Covid-19, would be “excellent as an alternative”.ALSO READ: Jason Holder calls for reciprocal tour of Caribbean as West Indies fly homeWhile the ECB clarified there was no specific on-going discussion on the subject at present, it is not inconceivable the present global situation and the backlog in international fixtures could accelerate the usage of separate squads in red and white ball cricket.England used something close to an A team for their recently concluded ODI series against Ireland – the final game featured four of the England XI that won the World Cup final – and they could potentially satisfy more requests for tours if they were to do so more often. West Indies have also expressed hopes England will tour in the coming months as they grapple with the financial ramifications of the Covid-19 pandemic.Whether such tours take place or not, England’s schedule is likely to prove hectic in the coming months. A limited-overs tour of South Africa is currently pencilled in for December, while they hope to return to Sri Lanka in January to fulfil the Test tour that was called off in March. They are then expected to play a five-Test series against India which may well take place in the UAE. The IPL runs from September 19 to November 8.As head coach, Silverwood retains overall responsibility for the direction of the England squads, even though he delegated white-ball responsibility to Paul Collingwood for the recent Ireland series. And although the England ended on a low with defeat in the third ODI, Silverwood admitted that the circumstances had had its benefits in forcing England to blood a range of new and less experienced players.”It always hurts to lose, but sometimes you learn your best lessons when you do,” said Silverwood. “You take things on board, but overall a series win is very good for them and it’s great to see the likes of Tom Banton getting scores and being mixed in amongst World Cup winners. It can only be a bonus for them to play alongside them.”Before Covid-19 struck, it did seem the chances of England returning to Pakistan were growing all the time. Many England players had played in the PSL games staged in the country, while others had gone as part of an MCC tour. It is understood security reports were far more positive than they had been even a couple of years ago and there was every expectation that 2022 tour would take place in Pakistan.Whether there could be scope for a T20 tour before that date remains to be seen. England, in particular, have a hectic international schedule so it might require the selection of something of a shadow squad – a bit like the ODI side that played Ireland – to satisfy Wasim’s request. The ECB have confirmed that, at present, there are no plans for a tour to Pakistan before 2022.

Howe must ditch 6/10 Newcastle man who won 0 duels vs Man Utd

Newcastle United fell to a first Premier League defeat in four matches, losing 3-2 to Manchester United at Old Trafford on Wednesday night.

Eddie Howe’s side trailed at the break, following Kobbie Mainoo’s strike just after the half-hour mark, separating the sides after a half of few opportunities.

Anthony Gordon scored his 11th league goal of the season before goals from Amad Diallo and Rasmus Hojlund pushed Erik ten Hag’s side into a two-goal advantage.

Left-back Lewis Hall pulled a goal back in stoppage time, but it wasn’t enough with the Magpies now three points behind Chelsea in the battle for a Europa League spot.

It’s no secret that injuries have plagued Howe’s side in recent months, with one of the returning players having an evening to forget in Manchester.

Kieran Trippier’s stats against Manchester United

After not starting since the 2nd of March, Kieran Trippier was recalled to Newcastle’s starting eleven for the trip to face the Red Devils.

However, it would be a decision that backfired, with the 33-year-old producing a below-par performance at Old Trafford.

The right-back could only produce 22 accurate passes, at a completion rate of just 63% and only managed to find a teammate on 50% of his crosses into the 18-yard box.

Trippier also lost possession 17 times and failed to win any of the duels that he contested during the defeat. The former Atletico Madrid defender failed to produce any positive numbers defensively, being dribbled past once and unable to complete any tackles.

When comparing his stats with fellow full-back Hall, it’s clear that the 19-year-old’s display was much more complete than his experienced teammate – even managing to get on the scoresheet for the second time against the Red Devils this season.

Trippier was subsequently awarded a 6/10 rating by Chronicle Live journalist Lee Ryder, with the Newcastle correspondent claiming the defender looked 'off the pace'.

With it being his first start in over two months, it was to be expected he would be slightly off the pace, but with a crunch battle coming up on Sunday, Howe must immediately drop him and replace him with another talent who made his comeback last night.

The man to replace Trippier against Brentford

After missing the Magpies’ last two Premier League outings through injury, centre-back Fabian Schar made his return in the defeat off the substitutes bench, replacing Trippier in the 63rd minute of the clash.

Full-back Emil Krafth has often had to feature at the heart of the defence alongside Dan Burn such as the current injury problems, with Howe needing to play the Swede in his natural position ahead of the trip to the GTEC on Sunday afternoon.

It would allow Schar and Burn to play in a centre-back pairing, with Krafth taking up his usual role on the right-hand side of the Magpies defence.

With Sunday’s game being vital in the club’s hunt for European football, Howe simply must drop Trippier with the defender needing to be replaced by Schar if the Magpies are to have any chance of claiming seventh spot at the very least.

Dutch journalist shares major update on Ten Hag for Man Utd fans

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has been told he is a "dream candidate" for another club.

Manchester United eye Ten Hag replacements

After securing a League Cup and Champions League finish in 2022/23, Erik ten Hag was expected to take Manchester United to the next level this season. However, results in the Premier League and various cup competitions suggest the Dutchman is on borrowed time at Old Trafford.

New Manchester United owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe is seemingly eyeing replacements for the Dutchman ahead of the summer. Bologna boss Thiago Motta has emerged as one of the names being tipped to replace Ten Hag in Manchester. The Italian has taken his current side up to 4th in the Serie A table, meaning they are currently on course to secure a spot in next season's Champions League.

Elsewhere, reports last month claimed Manchester United see Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi as a top candidate to replace Ten Hag at the end of the season. The Italian plays a very appealing style of football and despite their vastly different spending ability, the Seagulls are only six points off the Red Devils in the league at present.

For the time being though, Manchester United fans are stuck with Ten Hag until Ratcliffe or the Dutchman himself decide to make a change. When asked about Ten Hag's future in February, Ratcliffe remained tight-lipped: “I’m not going to comment on the job he’s done because that would be inappropriate. What is relevant to that question is that, if you look at the 11 years that have gone since David Gill and Sir Alex stepped down, there has been a whole series of coaches.

“Some of them were very good but none of them has been successful or survived for very long. You can't blame all the coaches. The only conclusion is that the environment in which they were working didn't work.

Erik ten Hag "dream candidate" for another club

While Ratcliffe is yet to give too much away regarding Ten Hag's future at Old Trafford, the Dutchman seemingly has a new job waiting for him.

This comes with a number of Dutch journalists talking up a Ten Hag return to Ajax. Speaking on the Kick-Off podcast (via Sport Witness) Valentijn Driessen highlighted Ajax’s interest in having him back.

“The first choice, of course, is Ten Hag. You then have to have the guts to wait for his dismissal. Ten Hag is now shouting everywhere that he is next season’s big man.”

Fellow Journalist Mike Verweij also highlighted that possibility, while labelling Ten Hag as Ajax's "dream candidate".

Should Manchester United indeed part ways with Ten Hag this summer, a move back the Ajax would make sense for all parties, especially with de Godenzonen languishing in 6th place in the Eredivisie.
