Man City in contact to sign £100m midfielder who could star alongside Rodri

Manchester City are looking to sign a current Premier League star, with contact already made over a possible transfer.

Man City transfer rumours

Despite being knocked out of the Champions League by Real Madrid earlier this month, it promises to be a busy end to the season, with Pep Guardiola’s side looking to retain the Premier League title and the FA Cup.

Off the pitch, Etihad officials could also be busy when it comes to buying and selling ahead of the 2024/25 season, with Jack Grealish the latest player to be linked with a move away. Bernardo Silva continues to be linked with a move to Barcelona, but there have been a number of incoming rumours.

For example, Crystal Palace star Michael Olise appears to be a target, as well as Bayern Munich’s Jamal Musiala, who City are reportedly willing to break the bank for.

Former academy gem Jeremie Frimpong has been linked with a return to Manchester as the long-term replacement for Kyle Walker, and a new update suggests contact has been made for a possible Rodri partner.

Man City make Bruno Guimaraes approach

According to 90min, Man City are looking to sign Newcastle United star Bruno Guimaraes and have approached the player's camp over a move. The report states that Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain are contenders to sign the Brazilian midfielder, with the Gunners also looking at Newcastle striker Alexander Isak.

douglas-luiz-bruno-guimaraes-liverpool-opinion

City’s interest in Guimaraes comes as the club are ‘looking for a player to compliment Rodri and like the fact Guimaraes can play as a number six or a number eight’. However, the report adds that even though Newcastle need to bring in some funds to comply with FFP, they would love to keep Guimaraes, so his £100m release clause may need to be triggered.

Guimaraes has been a regular at St James’ Park since joining in 2022 and has gone from strength to strength, with his Transfermarkt valuation doubling to a career-high €85m since moving to England. He has now made more than 100 appearances for Newcastle, 44 of which have come during the current campaign, and Guimaraes quickly received praise from Magpies legend Alan Shearer as well, who said in 2022.

“He was superb. Man of the match for me was Bruno. The way he handles that ball under pressure and is able to ping that ball into the forward players, he’s so comfortable on the ball, particularly if you give him this amount of space.”

Capable of playing as a holding or central midfielder, you could argue that a Rodri and Guimaraes partnership in midfield could be dominant for City, and if the club get their way, we may see that at the Etihad come August.

26 year-old open to summer move to Tottenham, Ange wants him as well

Tottenham have been handed a timely boost in their pursuit of a transfer target, as reliable journalist Alasdair Gold shares news this week.

Spurs targeting new centre-back despite Dragusin signing

Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou has set his sights on strengthening a key position this summer at centre-half, regardless of their Radu Dragusin capture for £25 million in the January transfer window.

Tottenham "ready to seal" a potential "bargain" deal for Ange this summer

The Lilywhites are keen to shore up multiple areas.

ByEmilio Galantini Apr 10, 2024

The Romania international was signed from Genoa as an alternative to star defender Micky van de Ven, who has been absolutely pivotal for Postecoglou and Tottenham's aggressive high line.

Van de Ven's hamstring injury earlier this season resulted in a real slump in form for Spurs, so Dragusin's arrival will make the possibility of that happening again a little less likely at least.

However, while the 22-year-old's signing significantly bolsters Tottenham's options at the back, Postecoglou has candidly admitted to the media that Spurs will look to bring in another centre-half this summer.

“If you’re saying, ‘Is it an area we can strengthen?’, yes it’s an area we will probably look at”, said Postecoglou on Spurs' summer transfer plans. “With all these things, it’s about trying to strengthen the group as much as anything else. If you think about when I first arrived, we had maybe six or seven centre-backs at the club. So it’s not just numbers. It’s more about the ability of those players to play the football we want and to fit in to what we’re trying to build here.

“I think it is an area of the park we will look to strengthen, but I think we’ll look to strengthen all areas of the park come the end of the season. That is planning that’s already underway, and other people are in charge of it at the moment.”

In terms of named targets, reports indicate the free agent market will be a fruitful source of talent. Bournemouth defender Lloyd Kelly remains on Spurs' radar, with his contract ticking down to expiry.

Elsewhere, Fulham defender Tosin Adarabioyo is another soon-to-be free agent who's been in fine form. The 26-year-old has been a star man for Marco Silva since returning to the side, but the Whites appear resigned to losing him for nothing.

Tosin eyeing move to Tottenham with Ange keen on signing him

According to Gold, writing in a football.london piece this week, Tosin is open to joining Tottenham and Postecoglou is actually big fan of the former Man City starlet.

He is one of a few options Spurs are looking at, but they're expected to firm up their interest in the Englishman as we approach this summer window.

Called a "magnificent" defender by members of the press, Man City boss Pep Guardiola has also been record praising the player's speed and physicality.

Aston Villa ready to sell £90,000-a-week player who Emery doesn’t want

Aston Villa are now planning to accept an offer for a big earner who isn’t in Unai Emery’s plans.

Aston Villa transfer rumours

It has been a busy first full season in charge for Emery, who has his side pushing for a top-four finish in the Premier League ahead of Tottenham and Manchester United. It comes after two productive transfer windows, with NSWE backing the Spaniard in the market with a number of new additions.

Fabrizio Romano says Aston Villa have offered "superb" gem a new contract

ByCharlie Smith Mar 26, 2024

Now, attention already seems to be on who Villa could be looking to sign ahead of the 2024/25 season, where they will be hoping to offer Champions League football.

Two high-profile players to be linked with a move to Villa Park have been Paulo Dybala and Mario Hermoso. Villa are thought to be leading the race at this moment in time for Dybala, whereas talks have been held to sign centre-back Hermoso on a free transfer from Atletico Madrid.

However, to comply with FFP, a plethora of exits may also be required in the Midlands, and it looks as if one player will be forced out over the summer.

Leander Dendoncker transfer update

It has been revealed recently by Fabrizio Romano that Leander Dendoncker is set to return to the Midlands in the summer, with his Napoli loan spell being nothing short of a disaster. The Serie A side had an option to make a move permanent at the end of the season, but the Belgian has played just 21 minutes across three appearances.

Now, according to Football Insider, Villa are ready to accept a bid for Dendoncker as he has ‘no future’ at the club.

It is believed that Emery doesn’t feel Dendoncker ‘has the energy and dynamism to thrive in his system’, with a permanent Villa Park exit now on the cards. The versatile 28-year-old, who is picking up around £90,000-a-week, is under contract with Villa until 2026.

Aston Villa midfielderLeander Dendoncker.

Signed from Wolves back on deadline day back in 2022 when Steven Gerrard was still in charge, Dendoncker’s move across the Midlands hasn’t worked out, with the player turning out just 36 times for Villa.

He arrived with plenty of hope from Gerrard, who said: “A lot of players are in the situation where they fall out of a manager’s first choice, if you like, they obviously start thinking about World Cup situations and it came up late. This is a player who’s played for Wolves for many seasons who have finished high up in the league so he knows what it takes.

"He’s also been a part of one of the best international teams for the last few years so we’re hoping he can add some much-needed quality and support to our players.”

Prior to his loan move to Italy in January, Dendoncker made just one Premier League start under Emery this season, and it looks as if his appearance against Middlesbrough in the FA Cup will be his last in a Villa shirt.

Andrew McDonald named Justin Langer's senior assistant

Victoria coach Andrew McDonald is the new senior assistant for the Australian men’s team coach Justin Langer in a ground-breaking deal, though doubt still surrounds the new man’s starting date amid protracted negotiations. In a first for Cricket Australia, McDonald will be allowed to continue his overseas short-form roles as the coach of Birmingham in England’s new Hundred competition, in addition to being coach of the Rajasthan Royals in the IPL. These concessions will allow McDonald the sort of freedom to add to his earning capacity denied to other assistant coaches in the past, one of the major roadblocks to senior figures working alongside the likes of Langer and his predecessors.ALSO READ: McDonald appointed Rajasthan Royals coachNews of McDonald’s appointment with the Australian season already well underway will be an issue for Victoria and also the Melbourne Renegades in the BBL, in some ways mirroring how Langer himself left Australia to join Western Australia and the Perth Scorchers in late 2012, having served as an assistant coach for more than three years.Nonetheless, it will be a major advantage for Langer to gain from McDonald the assistance of one of the best regarded coaches in world cricket, having put together an enviable record with Leicestershire, Victoria and the Renegades in recent years. Equally, McDonald’s temperament and strength as a communicator who has also experienced the crucible of international cricket will aid the balance of the team at home and on tour.”We are excited to have Andrew join the Australian Men’s Team,” the CA national teams manager Ben Oliver said. “As a player, Andrew was an outstanding all-rounder, tactician and competitor and a popular teammate. And as a coach, he has demonstrated great leadership and enjoyed remarkable success in all formats.”We are confident our playing group will grow under Andrew’s mentorship. We are also proud that our world-class domestic system is providing a pathway to international coaching ranks. We were fortunate to have a strong list of candidates to choose from and I would personally like to thank all those who applied for the position of Senior Assistant Coach along with Cricket Victoria for their support of Andrew.”Langer told ESPNcricinfo last week that CA needed to be “creative and agile” to secure the services of the right person for the job, and also added that he would prefer to wait extra time if it meant finishing up with his preferred candidate, and following confirmation of McDonald’s appointment described him as the “perfect” foil for his coaching leadership.”Andrew complements our coaching panel perfectly. I have no doubt his all-round knowledge and man management skills will be a positive addition to our team,” Langer said. “The coaching success Andrew has enjoyed around the world in a relatively short period of time is testament to his skill, dedication and knowledge of the game.”He is also a wonderful competitor, which Australian fans saw first hand throughout his career with the national team, Victoria and South Australia, as well as the Renegades, Strikers and Thunder.”McDonald had been touted as a possible coach of England to replace Trevor Bayliss earlier this year, before Chris Silverwood took the role. Australia’s limited-overs captain Aaron Finch said in June that it was inevitable in his mind that McDonald would eventually take on an international role.”I think he definitely at some point in his career will coach an international team,” Finch said at the time. “The great strength of his – the ability to communicate with every player in a list, thinks through every situation really well, doesn’t make emotional decisions on anything, which I think is a huge plus as a coach, to be able to take that time to reflect and see what’s best for the group in every decision that you make.”He’s tactical – the tactical side of his coaching is second to none, and I think that he’s as well-planned as a coach as I’ve ever seen. I’ve, obviously, known him a lot longer and dealt with him for a huge amount of time, so I’m a little bit biased in my opinions at times, as well, because he is such a great coach when it comes to all facets of the game.”Various coaches and mentors have spent time around the national team over the past 18 months, including David Saker, Brad Haddin, Troy Cooley, Adam Griffith and in recent days Ryan Harris and Michael Hussey. Ricky Ponting was part of the support staff for the World Cup and Steve Waugh for the Ashes, but all understood that these were short-term arrangements.Andrew Ingleton, the Cricket Victoria chief executive, said that while McDonald would be a loss to the state, he went with the association’s blessing. “Naturally we’re sad to see Andrew leave after completing such a great year for Victorian cricket but we understand his desire to challenge himself at the highest level and have no doubt he will be a significant asset to the national coaching unit,” Ingleton said. “It’s testament to Andrew’s achievements with our teams that he has been given this opportunity.”

Albert courted controversy earlier this year when she shared anti-LGBTQ posts on social media, sparking criticism from USWNT icons Alex Morgan and Lindsey Horan as well as a strong statement from the players' association.

Albert apologized for the posts and was able to continue playing for the national team in the wake of the controversy, and new USWNT boss Hayes has allowed her to remain part of the team for the competition in Paris this summer, saying she deserves it "on merit in terms of what she offers" to the midfield.

WHAT HAYES SAID

Hayes went on to say that the 20-year has learned from her experience, telling reporters: "Korbin has had to learn. She’s a young person who’s understood fully the implications of her social media activity.

"The conversations we have had have been to talk about the importance of what we have to be mindful of, and how we are all part of an environment that’s one that appreciates and understands the damage that can do."

The ex-Chelsea manager added: "She has been a delight to coach. I think she’s had a really, really tough time. She’s really struggled. And I think some of that has shown in her performances. She’s a young person having to deal with a lot of criticism — rightfully so. She can hear the noise in the stadium and that’s affected her.

"I can say firsthand that having spent limited time with Korbin, she really is a lovely person and someone who really values the most important things, and that she’s spending time working on herself as we all do. I look forward to building on that with her, and I want everybody to know that my job is to make sure I keep doing that. I want the fans to really embrace Korbin because I think she’s a tremendous human being."

Newcastle might have the perfect Schar heir in "exciting" teen prospect

Last season, Newcastle United's defence was one of the strongest in the Premier League. The Magpies were joint top with Manchester City for the least number of goals conceded in England's top flight (33).

This was no doubt thanks to the likes of Sven Botman and Fabian Schar in helping to solidify Eddie Howe's defensive line, forming the foundation of the club's push for Champions League qualification.

Schar, in particular, notably went "under the radar" for his fine displays alongside the Dutchman – in the words of pundit Harry Redknapp – having looked like a man reborn under Howe's watch at St James' Park.

However, this season, things seem to have taken a turn for the worse and Howe's men currently find themselves in seventh – albeit with the experienced centre-back helping his side to a valuable 3-2 win over Nottingham Forest on Saturday.

A particular issue has been the lack of depth at the heart of the defence outside of Schar and Botman, with club captain Jamaal Lascelles having been notably linked with an exit during the January transfer window, after falling down the pecking order in recent years.

With no new faces brought in last month to bolster the backline, Howe must look toward the academy ranks if he is to find a suitable understudy for his star pairing…

Fabian Schar's season in numbers so far

The Switzerland centre-back has plied his trade on Tyneside since he joined the club in 2018 for a fee worth around £3m.

The now 32-year-old has had yet another solid season for the Magpies as he has managed to play a total of 33 games in all competitions whilst contributing four goals to his team.

According to Sofascore, in England's top flight alone, the 32-year-old has been involved with six clean sheets and has averaged 1.2 tackles per game.

When comparing Schar's stats to that of Virgil van Dijk's, for instance, it really puts into perspective how well the Newcastle man has performed of late.

Van Dijk himself only has one additional clean sheet in the Premier League but, not only that, he averages the same amount of tackles (1.2) as his Swiss counterpart – once again reinforcing just what a bargain signing the latter man was.

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk.

Despite Schar's performances across the season, due to his age there will likely be concern over his ability to be a long-term fixture at St James' Park, hence the need to soon line up a suitable replacement.

With the aforementioned Lascelles also into his 30's, one player who could instead be Schar's so-called 'heir' is academy star, Cathal Heffernan – the youngster joining from the AC Milan youth setup in the summer of 2023 for an unknown fee.

How Cathal Heffernan compares to Schar

Although Heffernan is yet to make his senior debut for the northeast side, the promising Irishman has played a rather important role in their youth squad since joining.

So far, he has played 15 games for Newcastle's Under-21's and has scored two goals, with one of them even coming against his former club, Milan, in the UEFA Youth League.

Described as "very exciting" by journalist Thomas Hammond, before officially joining the club in the summer he had already featured in a few of Newcastle Under-21's pre-season friendlies at the time.

Before previously making the move to San Siro, the 18-year-old did even make his senior debut for his boyhood club, Cork City. He has also been heavily featured in Ireland's youth setup, making 19 appearances thus far.

If Heffernan's development continues as strongly as it has done over the past year or so, it may not be too long before the youngster is lining up in the senior ranks for the Magpies.

Stubborn Dominic Sibley resists Stuart Broad on dour day as hosts hold firm

Not a day to remember, but Warwickshire may find that the end justifies their means

Richard Hobson at Edgbaston03-Jun-2019

The removal of much of its branding and soporific pace of the play made Edgbaston look and feel more like a working museum than a cricket ground about to be used for the fastest-moving World Cup in history. But despite progress more redolent of the dourest old days of the sport, it also nodded towards a possible future.Dominic Sibley was there at the start and remained there at the end, 81 not out from 264 balls. With England looking for an opening batsman prepared to blunt as much as take apart Australia’s attack come the Ashes, the sight of his big front leg pushing forward, bat not far behind, could easily become a leitmotiv of the series. He is close to a fourth first-class hundred of the season. If Sibley is relatively unknown outside county aficionados, then Stuart Broad is a familiar figure. Not, though, in this incarnation. Over the winter, when he briefly lost his place in the England side, Broad contemplated how best to fill what remains of his career. The answer may well have been on display: no longer a nasty, pouting new ball bowler, but wise first change. Draco Malfoy has become Albus Dumbledore. With James Pattinson available for a first Championship match since 2017, and Luke Fletcher rewarded for his status as Nottinghamshire’s most successful bowler this season, Broad waited until the ninth over to remove his sunhat and join the attack. He was bypassed again when Steven Mullaney took the second new ball as Warwickshire ground on carefully beneath the floodlights. For his first two spells at least, Broad was the pick of the attack. He not only maintained a stranglehold on the scoring (being far from alone in that regard) but also represented the most likely source of wickets. The battle with Rob Yates in particular looked what it was: a man with 437 Test wickets tormenting a 19-year-old only three weeks into his first-team career. To his great credit, Yates never sought to hit his way out of obvious difficulties.Even if the temptation to perm James Anderson with a fresh new-ball partner in Jofra Archer proves irresistible to Joe Root and Trevor Bayliss come the first Test at this same ground at the start of August, the presence as back-up of such an experienced operator in Broad would offer skill and insurance. He is also the man most likely to wind up David Warner and the rest.Broad is already causing mischief, tweeting in fake solemnity the observation that Justin Langer’s plea for an end to the booing of Warner and Steve Smith contrasts with the invitation of Darren Lehmann to make life Down Under a misery for Broad. There isn’t a wooden spoon big enough for Broad to stir this particular pot. He doesn’t sound like a man expecting to be on the sidelines, Archer or not.The pace may be down, but he kept a tight line on the first day here and found a bit of movement at times, especially operating around the wicket to the left-handers. Against less patient batsmen, that is often enough to bring reward. And when he reflects at the end of the season, he might consider Sibley to be the most obdurate of them all. Time after time, he eschewed the invitation to drive at balls outside off stump.Perhaps it was a function of the pitch, perhaps of the first division table or perhaps of the character of the Warwickshire batting that runs came so slowly. The ratio 39/35 sounds like the polling of the main political groups in the days of the two-party system. Those figures here represented runs scored and overs bowled during the session between lunch and tea.Nottinghamshire and Warwickshire occupy the bottom two slots and the only win for either came last week when Jeetan Patel spun the home side to victory against Surrey. Spin is expected to play a large part this time too, explaining why both sides wanted to bat first and why Warwickshire clearly place such value on first innings runs before deterioration takes hold. The loose cut shot that brought the end of Will Rhodes proved a rare concession to temptation, as myriad statistics attest. Sibley needed 185 balls for his fifty. Sam Hain’s second scoring shot came off his 55th ball. Broad returned figures of 7-5-2-1 in his second spell. And, for the most part, the patience of the crowd reflected the pace of the action.Sibley survived a sharp chance to Matt Carter at second slip off Pattinson on 20 and then on 47 when Joe Clarke’s direct hit had him scampering for his ground. In fact, it was Hain, even more abstemious, who was eventually run out having been sent back by his partner, Chris Nash backing up the original throw from Samit Patel to punish a horrible misunderstanding.Warwickshire did accelerate after tea, relatively speaking. They pushed the infield and sought to rotate strike, with Hain and Sibley forcing balls through their favoured leg side. So not a day to remember, but Nottinghamshire have the worst batting record in the division and, come Thursday, Warwickshire may find that the end justifies their means.

Brendan Taylor's wife mugged outside their home in Harare

Taylor tweeted about the incident, saying her wife only lost her handbag but it could’ve been worse

Liam Brickhill15-May-2019Zimbabwe cricketer Brendan Taylor’s wife was mugged outside their home in Harare earlier this week, with Taylor tweeting about the incident and urging residents of the city to remain vigilant amid reports of increased crime.”Just had an alarming situation outside my house,” Taylor tweeted. “I was waiting for my wife’s return in my driveway. I started hearing her screaming about 100m from my gate, she was getting mugged by 4 armed men. I ran outside and they sped away in red Honda Fit.””I managed to get my mother-in-law, and she actually had a firearm on her,” Taylor told ESPNcricinfo. “We decided to try and locate the criminals, but they were nowhere to be seen. And it’s probably a matter for the police anyway. They tried to steal the vehicle, but Kelly [Taylor’s wife] fought them off and refused to hand over the keys. So they snatched her handbag.”Local media has reported an increase in crime in the country since the intensification of load-shedding in Harare this week, with criminals apparently taking advantage of the power failures in the capital city’s suburbs.”Unfortunately we’re getting more and more of this in Zimbabwe,” Taylor said. “Things are getting desperate and people are genuinely struggling. We’re experiencing about 8, 9, 10 hours a day of power cuts. It’s either all morning or all night. So there are easy hiding places for these guys to set people up, watch their movements and jump at an opportunity.”Avondale Police station, which is the station closest to Taylor’s house, has also taken to social media to urge residents of the area to be on high alert.”We note with concern the crime activity in our area in the last 8 weeks,” read a message on the station’s social media page. “Unregistered vehicles continue to expose our community to crime and we now are appealing to all our Avondale residents and Security Structures, Neighbourhood Watches, Whatsapp Media Platforms to be on high alert for any suspicious individuals or vehicles.”
