Man United: Red Devils Falling Behind For Amrabat

Manchester United could yet lose the race to sign Fiorentina's Sofyan Amrabat, according to reports, after they left him waiting despite agreeing personal terms with the midfielder.

Even as the Premier League season approaches, The Manchester club are yet to actually launch a bid for the Moroccan.

What's the latest on Sofyan Amrabat to Manchester United?

As per La Repubblica, via Sport Witness, Amrabat has had his bags packed and has been ready to go for weeks having already agreed a salary with United, but has been left waiting due to Manchester United's failure to make their first bid to Fiorentina.

The Red Devils may want to get a move on, however, given that Juventus' reported sale of Denis Zakaria to Monaco for €20m (£17m) has given the Serie A giants the money and squad space to pursue a deal for Amrabat this summer, according to Sport Mediset, via Sport Witness.

With that said, unless United speed up their negotiations, reports suggest that Juventus are now unexpectedly overtaking them in the deal to sign the Fiorentina midfielder this summer.

The Premier League giants have reportedly been weighing up a €25m (£22m) offer, in a saga that is expected to carry on until the final days of the summer transfer window.

Should Manchester United sign Sofyan Amrabat?

Fiorentina central midfielder Sofyan Amrabat.

Given the fact that Manchester United will have Champions League football to contend with on top of domestic action in the forthcoming campaign, adding depth to their midfield wouldn't exactly be a bad idea.

So far this summer, Erik ten Hag has welcomed Mason Mount, Andre Onana, and Rasmus Hojlund in what has been a fairly successful window. Signing Amrabat would be the cherry on top, however.

Last season, the Red Devils were left without adequate backup for Casemiro on too many occasions, as the midfielder missed eight games through suspensions, alone.

In those eight games, United suffered defeats against both Newcastle United and Arsenal, with Ten Hag unable to plug the hole left by Casemiro.

That's where Amrabat could come in. Statistically speaking, the Fiorentina man is more than able to step into fill the void left by the Brazilian should it be needed.

According to FBref, compared to Scott McTominay last season, Amrabat made over double the amount of progressive passes per 90, as well as more progressive carries, and enjoyed more goal involvements.

It is the type of depth that can result in trophies, making United's pursuit of Amrabat one which must end with the midfielder holding up the famous Red Devils' colours.

The Morocco international has earned plenty of praise in the last year, too, with Micah Richards saying on Match of the Day during the World Cup, via Manchester World: “It was the epitome of this team, brilliant. He’s been outstanding, not just off the ball, on the ball, dictating play, starting attacks from midfield. Great.”

Amrabat, of course, played a large part in his country's shock progression into the 2022 World Cup semi-finals, where they crashed out against France. If United can secure his signature and get such performances out of him at Old Trafford, then they'll have themselves some player.

Romano drops huge Lagerbielke and Fraser Celtic transfer update

Celtic are in pursuit of another two summer additions as they look to win a third consecutive SPFL title. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano spoke to GIVEMESPORT about the latest on this pair of targets for Brendan Rodgers’ side.

Newcastle United winger set to depart St James’ Park?

As Newcastle United reach new heights in the Premier League pecking order, some players are due to fall by the wayside.

One man who is surplus to requirements in Eddie Howe’s plans is the diminutive winger Ryan Fraser. The signing of Harvey Barnes from Leicester City as well as the electric form of Miguel Almiron from this time last year has seen Fraser’s chances of playing time dwindle even further.

Fraser arrived in Newcastle from AFC Bournemouth in 2020, where he was managed by Howe once again. During their time together at the Vitality, they worked their way up from League One to the promise land of English football and so manager was clearly keen to reunite with player when he landed the Magpies’ job.

The 29-year-old accrued just 311 minutes in the league last season, spanning across three starts and five substitute appearances. Fraser did then not feature in the matchday squad as Newcastle swept aside Aston Villa on the opening day of the season, further fuelling the rumours linking him with Celtic.

Celtic eyeing up a Swedish defender?

Celtic’s other target will be lesser known to the common football fan, the man in question being Gustaf Lagerbielke.

He made his debut for the Swedish national team in January of this year and has already played for a number of teams in his home country.

Currently, the 23-year-old represents the 2012 league champions IF Elfsborg and has the Scottish champions on red alert. Sky Sports are reporting that they are close to landing the centre-back for a rumoured £3 million fee.

What is Fabrizio Romano's Celtic update?

Fabrizio Romano has given the latest news on the pursuit of Ryan Fraser and Gustaf Lagerbielke, to GIVEMESPORT.

“Yeah, it’s a work in progress in that aspect. I expect both deals to advance in the next days as there are conversations ongoing. So the idea is to advance, and we have to see what’s going to happen next there because there is interest also in their players.”

What other Celtic news is there?

Along with adding Lagerbielke at the heart of defence, Rodgers is reportedly eyeing an upgrade in the left-back slot.

Youngster Quentin Merlin broke through into the Nantes first team the season before last and has now become a stalwart for the Ligue 1 outfit.

French journalist Emmanuel Merceron has claimed that Merlin could become another summer arrival at Celtic Park.

In that same position, there have been murmurs about a possible return to Scotland for Kieran Tierney. He is currently out of favour under Mikel Arteta at the Emirates and it is looking more and more likely that he will depart Arsenal in this window.

Real Sociedad are at the fore of this interest but the two clubs can’t come to an agreement about whether it will be a loan or permanent move. Rudy Galetti has indicated that Celtic could genuinely be in for Tierney to reunite him with former boss Brendan Rodgers.

Man City Willing To Pay Valentin Barco Release Clause

Manchester City are willing to pay Valentin Barco’s release clause, and a report has claimed that the Sky Blues are actually willing to pay more to sign the defender.

What’s the latest Man City transfer news?

Pep Guardiola has brought in midfielder Mateo Kovacic and defender Josko Gvardiol from Chelsea and RB Leipzig so far this summer, but it appears as if it could be a fairly busy end to the window for those at the Etihad.

Attacking additions appears to be on the to-do list for the treble winners, especially a new right-winger following Riyad Mahrez’s move to Saudi Arabia. Rennes’ Jeremy Doku appears to be the top target for that role, with recent reports even claiming that City have agreed on personal terms with the Belgian over a five-year deal.

Another attacking midfielder could also be on the agenda before the September 1 deadline, with Kevin de Bruyne potentially sidelined for a long period of time with a hamstring injury.

West Ham United star Lucas Paqueta is another who was heavily linked with a move, but it looks as if the club have a new target in Boca Juniors teenager Barco and are willing to swoop.

Sport Witness relayed a transfer update from one Argentinian outlet regarding Barco in the last 48 hours. They claimed that City are willing to activate the player’s $10m (£7.86m) release clause, however, the Sky Blues are actually willing to pay $14m (£11m) and they would also have to ‘pay taxes’ for the transfer too, which would take the deal to $17m (£13.3m), over £5m more than the player’s actual release clause.

Barco, who has also been targeted by Brighton & Hove Albion, would like to play the Copa Libertadores with Boca Juniors before making any move away, something that City may have to consider when negotiating a deal.

Who is Valentin Barco?

Barco is 19 years of age and is primarily a left-back who can also turn out slightly further forward in a left midfield role if needed.

The Argentina U20 international is valued at a career-high €3.5m by Transfermarkt and is already sponsored by Adidas, with his contract at Boca Juniors valid until the end of 2024.

He has made 20 senior appearances for his current employers – 17 of which have come in 2023, and by the looks of things, he has caught the eye in England. Back in 2021, Barco was named among The Guardian’s 60 best young talents in world football, with Juan Carlos Pasman highlighting his ability at free kicks:

“Plays in the same position as Roberto Carlos and wants to continue in defence despite his coaches preferring him to play in midfield because of his technical ability. At the time of writing he has already played three times for Boca’s first team and is part of the Argentina under-17 set-up.

“He is extremely good going forward and has a mean free-kick, capable of scoring dead-ball goals with his left foot. Stands out with his bright red hair and promises to be a future star.”

It looks as if a move to the Etihad could be one to keep an eye on, with City having just two weeks to complete a deal.

Anderson named England vice-captain

James Anderson will step up to act as Joe Root’s deputy in Australia for as long as Ben Stokes remains unavailable

James Anderson has been named as England’s Test vice-captain. He will act as Joe Root’s deputy in Australia for as long as Ben Stokes remains unavailable.Anderson, 35, is the leader of the bowling attack and, although he does not have much experience of captaincy, one of the squad’s most senior players. With Stokes currently out of contention while police continue to investigate his part in a fight outside a Bristol nightclub, Anderson has been preferred as vice-captain to other candidates such as Alastair Cook, Root’s predecessor in charge of the Test side, and Stuart Broad.”It’s a really nice thing that Joe has asked me to do,” Anderson said. “I don’t think it changes my role in the team. As a senior player I’ve always felt that I’ve a responsibility to help out other guys. Myself, Stuart and Alastair who have been here before – and had success here before – have an important role on this trip. So I don’t see that role changing my role much.”England suffered the latest injury setback of their tour on Thursday, when Jake Ball sprained his ankle while bowling against a Cricket Australia XI. Ball was sent for a scan on Friday and could be a doubt for the opening Ashes Test in Brisbane, starting on November 23.The mood in the England camp was hardly improved by a second-innings batting collapse, but England’s remaining seamers rallied in Ball’s absence, reducing the CA XI to 25 for 7 before an unbroken eighth-wicket stand of 45 carried the match into its final day.”It was outstanding, I thought,” Anderson said. “The three seamers bowled really well. We knew we had an important job to do, especially being a bowler down with Jake Ball injured.”Having seen the movement the Australians got earlier in the day, we were encouraged by that. We knew we could challenge them, and that’s what we did.”England’s success under the Adelaide floodlights augurs well for their prospects in the second Test which gets underway at the same venue in three week’s time.”We’ve seen the batsmen struggle a little bit round the twilight period,” Anderson said. “There’s not much more swing, potentially it seams a little bit more as the dew comes down. [But] there’s not a lot of difference … it’s just getting used to that light and the pink ball.”We just tried to stay patient … and we created pressure from both ends very well, and deserved those seven wickets.”It’s a first-class game, so we want to win it – you create a winning environment, [and] that’s important going into a huge series like theAshes.”With the current contest more or less over, England have one more four-day game at Townsville next week ahead of the first Test. Stuart Broad is expected to play in that game having sat this one out, with Anderson hinting that he is likely to make way for his new-ball partner.”Some batsmen have got some really good time out in the middle; there are some guys who haven’t,” he said. “The bowlers seem to be getting better every spell they bowl.”The batsmen’s form isn’t too much of an issue now, as long as they are scoring runs in that first Test at the Gabba. Personally, I feel like I’ve got enough bowling in my legs, and the ball is coming out well.

Vijay Shankar, Aparajith tons bolster TN

Centuries from Vijay Shankar and Baba Aparajith headlined Tamil Nadu‘s second day in Cuttack as the duo put on 177 for the fifth wicket to bolster their first-innings total to 530 for 8 dec against Odisha.Building on from the team’s overnight score of 292 for 3, Shankar motored on to notch up his fifth first-class hundred after losing his overnight partner Baba Indrajith (46) inside three overs of the morning session. Aparajith then joined in the action and waltzed to a ton of his own – his second this Ranji season – steering the team past 475. Both of them hit nine fours and a six each, before Shankar and No. 7 batsman Washington Sundar fell within the space of 3.2 overs only minutes before tea. Seamer Suryakant Pradhan added two wickets – including that of Indrajith’s – to his lone scalp from day one, while Biplab Samantray took out Shankar and Yo Mahesh. In response, Odisha openers Sandeep Pattnaik and Natraj Behera saw off 13 overs of the new ball with unbeaten scores of 15 and 17 at stumps.A 158-run stand between Ricky Bhui and DB Prashanth helped Andhra post 402 even as Tripura‘s 20-year-old medium-pacer Abhijit Sarkar snared a five-for to bowl the opposition in 144 overs. While Bhui struck a 74, Prashant could only add 13 to his overnight score of 120. Sarkar accounted for both en route to his second five-wicket haul this season, as well as Ashwin Hebbar (43). All of the other four bowlers employed by captain Manisankar Murasingh picked up at least one wicket.Tripura struggled early in their response, with Bandaru Ayyappa claiming Bishal Ghosh for 12 in the 16th over of the innings. Ghosh’s fellow opener Samrat Singh, however, struck four fours during his unbeaten 89-ball as he steered Tripura to 68 for 1 in Udiyan Bose’s (16*) company.

Butt takes Lahore Whites into semi-final

Salman Butt’s unbeaten 85 carried Lahore Whites into the final four on a day that saw Peshawar and Rawalpindi eliminated

ESPNcricinfo staff21-Nov-2017Salman Butt continued to shake off a wretched Quaid-e-Azam trophy campaign. His second unbeaten half-century in three games helped Lahore Whites trounce Peshawar by 27 runs. Butt’s 58-ball 85 took his side to the top of the standings. His fellow opener Kamran Akmal also joined in to make a 40-ball 52 as the Whites notched up 163. In response, the struggling Peshawar – who now have one win in six matches – could not find a single batsman to score over 25. That meant the chase never really took off. Lahore’s bowlers picked them off at ease with Umaid Asif starring with four for 26 to break the back of the Peshawar chase. Ehsan Adil and Asif Ali took two wickets apiece as Peshawar were cleaned up for 136, with their chances of qualifying for the semi-finals officially extinguished.A century stand between Umar Amin and Zain Abbas wasn’t enough for Rawalpindi as they lost to Faisalabad, thereby falling out of contention for the last four. Amin and Abbas scored 67 and 62 respectively, with Sohail Tanvir adding a quickfire 32 off 16 as Rawalpindi surged to 193. It was, surprisingly, the international stars in Faisalabad’s bowling attack who were the most expensive, with Faheem Ashraf, Saeed Ajmal and Yasir Shah conceding a whopping 115 runs in their combined 11 overs. But Faisalabad gave the daunting chase a right go, thanks largely to a 43-ball 87 from Sohaib Maqsood, even as the top order fell cheaply around him. By the time he was dismissed, he had contributed 87 to Faisalabad’s score of 108, but 86 were still required off a mere seven overss, the balance firmly in favour of the hosts. But sensational hitting from Khurram Manzoor – who finished with an unbeaten 52 off 25 – and Ashraf helped Faisalabad sneak home with a ball to spare and strengthen their hold on a semi-final position.

West Ham Are Frontrunners To Sign "Versatile" £20m Gem

West Ham United are finally beginning to make some headway in the transfer market.

The Irons have made a combined £60m bid for Manchester United’s Harry Maguire and Scott McTominay, whilst they have also agreed a £32m deal to sign Ajax midfielder Edson Alvarez.

One of the other names at the top of the Hammers’ agenda is Ian Maatsen.

What’s the latest on Ian Maatsen to West Ham?

According to Evening Standard journalist Nizaar Kinsella, the Irons are 'considered frontrunners' to sign the Chelsea youngster, should he leave Stamford Bridge.

It's thought that the young full-back is keen to stay at the west London outfit but wants assurances over his development plan and long-term prospects at the club before agreeing to a new deal.

Read the latest West Ham transfer news HERE…

The Netherlands U21 international has just one year left on his current contract, leaving a host of clubs keeping a watchful eye over developments, including West Ham.

Eredivisie giants Ajax and Ligue 1 side RC Lens are also thought to be in the race to land Maatsen, whilst another loan stint away from the Blues hasn't been ruled out yet.

He is currently valued at around £20m.

Would Ian Maatsen be a good signing for West Ham?

In Mauricio Pochettino’s short reign at the Chelsea helm, the 21-year-old gem has been described as “exceptional” by Kinsella due to his performances in pre-season. Across five games, he notched two games and an assist, whilst being forced to play out of position due to the more senior figures of Ben Chilwell and Marc Cucurella.

If he opts to stay at Stamford Bridge, the Argentine coach is set to play him as a winger or an attacking midfielder in a 4-2-3-1 system.

This creates an interesting conundrum for Maatsen, as West Ham’s interest would likely see him deployed in his more conventional left-back role. Moreover, long-serving servant Aaron Cresswell has been linked with a move to Wolverhampton Wanderers, which would seemingly create space for the youngster at the London Stadium.

Whilst on loan at Burnley last term, Clarets boss Vincent Kompany described Maatsen as a “very versatile full-back with lots of energy and great potential."

This versatility has stemmed from his adaptability to differing positional demands.

At Turf Moor, he recorded the joint-second most assists (6) and the third-most interceptions per game (1.4). This blend of defensive solidity and attacking verve means he is capable of across the left-hand side, a trait noted by Pochettino and Kompany.

Therefore, Hammers boss David Moyes would likely view Maatsen as competition for Emerson, who endured an inconsistent debut season in east London.

Emerson West Ham

Over the past 365 days, the Dutch outranks the Italian for a number of metrics including shot-creating actions per 90 (2.38 vs 1.98), progressive passes per 90 (6.21 vs 3.07), progressive carries per 90 (3.36 vs 2.59), tackles per 90 (2.18 vs 1.77), and interceptions per 90 (1.51 vs 1.02), via FBref.

Perhaps Emerson is a victim of Moyes’ rigidly unattractive style of play, but ultimately the 29-year-old dud only managed 16 Premier League starts without any injuries, so he looks easily replaceable.

After Maatsen’s glittering showings in the Championship and in the early stages for Chelsea this summer, it could well be a commendable coup for the 2023 Europa Conference League winners and one that spells trouble for the West Ham full-back.

Nottingham Forest Pushing To Sign Youssouf Fofana

Nottingham Forest are pushing to sign Monaco and France midfielder Youssouf Fofana this summer, but there could yet be a twist in the saga, according to reliable journalist David Ornstein.

How good is Youssouf Fofana?

The 24-year-old has risen to become a highly-rated footballer who is a key man for Monaco, making a total of 141 appearances for them to date.

In that time, Fofana has scored three goals and registered 11 assists, and he also featured six times for France at the 2022 World Cup, helping them reach the final that they eventually lost to Argentina.

The Frenchman's current Monaco deal expires at the end of next season, however, leaving them in something of a tricky situation when it comes to his future. Assuming he doesn't sign an extension, the Ligue 1 team will either have to sell him this summer in order to receive good money for his services or accept that he will be able to leave on a free transfer next June.

There is certainly interest in Fofana currently, which is no great surprise considering his ability, and with Forest looking to make some significant moves in the transfer market in the next couple of weeks, it appears as though the Reds are in the mix to sign him.

youssouf-fofana-premier-league-west-ham-transfers

Will Nottingham Forest sign Youssouf Fofana?

Taking to Twitter X, The Athletic's Ornstein dropped a key update regarding Fofana's future, claiming that Forest have made a big verbal offer, but there is a twist with other clubs still looking to hijack the deal:

"Nottingham Forest have made verbal proposal to sign Youssouf Fofana from Monaco. €35m + add-ons offer meets #ASMonaco expectation. #NFFC also speaking with 24yo France int’l to try to agree terms. Other clubs closely monitoring situation."

Forest signing Fofana would feel like a huge statement of intent by the club, considering his pedigree as a footballer and some of the clubs who have been linked with him recently, including Liverpool and Chelsea.

His performances in the heart of Monaco's midfield sum up what a great addition he would be at the City Ground this summer, having averaged 2.3 tackles per game across 36 league appearances last season, of which 35 were starts.

To have won 10 caps for a star-studded France side further outlines the quality at Fofana's disposal, and at 24 years of age, it would be a surprise if that tally didn't rise significantly as the years pass, especially as the likes of N'Golo Kante and Paul Pogba gradually move on from the international scene.

The midfielder has been described as a "wonderful" player by football talent scout Jacek Kulig and Forest snapping him up could add so much quality and character to their midfield, as they look to kick on from last season and ensure they don't get sucked into a relegation battle.

The Monaco man is now a proven player at the very top level – he came on during extra-time in the World Cup final against Argentine – so the Reds must do all they can to reach an agreement, in what could be a significant piece of business.
