Fulham Open Talks To Sign Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg

Fulham have now opened talks to sign Tottenham Hotspur's Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, and a report has revealed whether the midfielder would be willing to make the move to Craven Cottage…

What's the latest Fulham transfer news?

There is now likely to be a major outgoing for Fulham on deadline day, with Sky Sports reporter Florian Plettenberg recently claiming Joao Palhinha has now been given permission to fly to Germany, ahead of a move to reigning Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich.

A medical is yet to be booked, as more details have to be clarified, including the Cottagers' replacement, with Sky Sports' Gianluca Di Marzio now confirming they are working on a deal for Fiorentina's Sofyan Amrabat, which could amount to a total of €30m (£26m).

However, the Londoners are not the only Premier League club in the race for the central midfielder's signature, with Manchester United also in hot pursuit, and Football Insider report the Red Devils are now putting the finishing touches on a deal.

As such, Fulham may be forced to turn their attentions elsewhere, and they could stand a good chance of signing Hojbjerg, with a report from The Evening Standard revealing the midfielder would be "willing to listen" to any proposals put forward.

The 28-year-old is willing to listen to a possible move to Fulham before the transfer window slams shut because he has not started any of Tottenham's first three Premier League matches, under the helm of new manager Ange Postecoglou.

The Cottagers have opened talks to sign the Dane, who could be brought in as a replacement for Palhinha, but they may have to battle it out with La Liga giants Atletico Madrid, who are hoping Spurs lower their asking price before the 11pm deadline tonight.

Not only is the Tottenham midfielder a target for Marco Silva at this late stage in the window, but contact has also been made with several other players, including Manchester United's Scott McTominay, and AS Monaco's Youssouf Fofana, so there is no shortage of potential options.

Who has Pierre Emile-Hojbjerg played for?

The Denmark international started his career with Bayern Munich, making a total of 25 first-team appearances for the club, before spending time on loan at FC Augsburg and eventually going on to join Schalke 04, where he featured 30 times.

However, the former Bayern man truly made a name for himself in the Premier League, making 134 appearances for Southampton, and he has since gone on to become a key player for Spurs, playing every league game in the 2020-21 season.

Tottenham's Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg

Although he is clearly unfancied by Postecoglou, the £102k-per-week maestro has put in some fantastic performances over the course of the past year, ranking in the 91st percentile for his pass completion rate per 90, and in the 80th percentile for interceptions, when compared to his positional peers.

Despite not being as defensively strong as Palhinha, who places in the 99th percentile for tackles, Hojbjerg is a top-quality player, having been lauded as "unbelievable" by Jamie O'Hara, and he could be the perfect replacement for the Portugal international, making this one to watch.

Wolves vs Brighton: Head-to-head record, key stats & more

Wolves host Brighton & Hove Albion this weekend, with the home side hoping to get off the mark in their second Premier League game of the season.

They were narrowly beaten 1-0 by Manchester United at Old Trafford on Monday evening, but it was an encounter marred by a controversial decision.

Fans and pundits within the media thought the West Midlanders were the better side and unlucky not to at least come away with a point.

There was a stoppage-time collision between United goalkeeper André Onana and Wolves forward Sasa Kalajdzic, which many believed should have constituted a penalty. But after a brief VAR check, the penalty was not awarded, to the surprise of many.

Meanwhile, the Seagulls opened up their account with a thumping 4-1 victory over Premier League new boys Luton Town.

Roberto De Zerbi's side, who finished sixth last term, are expected to be back in and amongst the European spots once more, so they'll be a difficult test for Wolves on Saturday.

Ahead of the clash, Football FanCast has decided to take a look at the stats between the pair and how they've fared against each other over the years.

Wolves vs Brighton: Who has the better head-to-head record?

The pair have only faced each other 40 times throughout their long histories. Often, they've been in different divisions, so there have been periods where they've had long stints without meeting.

Perhaps quite surprisingly, Brighton dominate this statistic. The Seagulls have only conceded defeat on eight occasions – with 18 meetings resulting in victory.

What's perhaps even more surprising is that their first meeting didn't come until a League Cup third-round fixture in September 1969.

So considering Wolves had a lot of their success in the 1950s when they won three top-flight titles, this stat begins to make more sense.

  • Wolves wins: 8
  • Draws: 14
  • Brighton wins: 18

Wolves vs Brighton: Who has more wins at Molineux?

Considering the overall head-to-head statistic, it should come as no surprise that the south coast club come out on top in this one, too.

Though, you would expect the majority of Wolves' wins to have come at Molineux – but that isn't the case.

Just three wins from 19 games for Wolves have come at their home ground. It appears the Seagulls are most definitely their 'bogey team'.

  • Wolves wins: 3
  • Draws: 7
  • Brighton wins: 9

Wolves vs Brighton: Who has more wins on the south coast?

Brighton's home turf – be it at the Amex, Withdean Stadium or the Goldstone Ground – has produced a slightly more even affair between these two sides throughout the years. Of course, it is again the Seagulls who win this head-to-head statistic, but they only just edge it.

Wolves have picked up more of their victories on the south coast, so on Saturday, they'll be hoping to balance this out with a win at home.

Gary O'Neil's side will want to get off the mark as soon as possible as they bid to avoid a second successive relegation battle.

  • Brighton wins: 9
  • Draws: 7
  • Wolves wins: 5

Wolves vs Brighton: Who has the better domestic cup record?

It's the West Midlanders who win this statistic. There has been just the two meetings between the pair in domestic cup competitions, with one coming in the FA Cup and the other in the League Cup.

Interestingly, both affairs ended in 3-2 away victories for Wolves, with the first dating back to the 1969/70 campaign and the other in 1978/79.

Brighton have never won either the League or FA Cup, whereas Wolves have won the latter on four separate occasions. However, they are yet to win the former throughout their 146-year history.

If there come up against Brighton this year, though, history would at least be on their side.

  • Wolves wins: 2
  • Draws: 0
  • Brighton wins: 0

Wolves vs Brighton: What were the last five meetings?

29th April 2023 – Brighton 6-0 Wolves: De Zerbi's side recorded the club's biggest-ever top-flight victory and continued their push for a European spot.

They carved the away side open with ease as three players in Denis Undav, Pascal Gross and Danny Welbeck all registered braces.

Wolves boss Julen Lopetegui offered an apology to his fans following the match.

5th November 2023 – Wolves 2-3 Brighton: 10-man Wolves, managed by interim manager Steve Davis, suffered a sinking defeat on Bonfire Night after Gross netted the winner for Brighton with seven of the 90 minutes remaining.

The result left the West Midlands club in 19th, two points adrift of 17th-placed Aston Villa in safety.

30th April 2022 – Wolves 0-3 Brighton: Wolves' boss at the time, Bruno Lage, said this was his side's 'worst performance' of his tenure.

Brighton romped their way to a comfortable away victory thanks to goals from Alexis Mac Allister, Leandro Trossard and Yves Bissouma, all of whom no longer play for the club anymore, interestingly.

Despite the sizeable defeat, Wolves remained in a healthy league position, as they sat eighth, five points clear of their opposition. Though, they ultimately ended that season in 10th, behind Brighton on goal difference.

15th December 2021 – Brighton 0-1 Wolves: Romain Saïss ended Wolves' five-game run without a win as his side picked up a 1-0 away victory at the Amex to fire themselves up to eighth.

They hadn't actually scored in the previous four matches, remarkably, so this victory was certainly needed.

Meanwhile, Brighton, who were managed by Graham Potter, may have just started to look over their shoulders, as they dropped down to 13th, nine points above 18th-placed Burnley and having played a game more – while going winless in 13 games across all competitions.

9th May 2021 – Wolves 2-1 Brighton: Wolves midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White, who now plays for Nottingham Forest, scored a 90th-minute winner to clinch the three points in a dramatic encounter.

Brighton were down to 10 men for much of the second half after Lewis Dunk received a red card for pulling back Fabio Silva as he ran through on goal.

It was the West Midlanders' first top-flight win over the Seagulls in the club's history.

Who has played for Wolves and Brighton?

Rajiv van La Parra (Wolves 2014-2016; Brighton 2015-2016): The Dutch winger had a 57-game career at Wolves after signing on a free transfer in 2014 from SC Heerenveen. He scored two goals for the club whilst laying on 11 assists.

Meanwhile, he spent less than two months on loan at the Seagulls from Wolves, making six appearances and scoring two goals.

Perhaps his most memorable spell in England was during his stint at Huddersfield Town, where he helped the West Yorkshire club to a shock promotion to the Premier League.

Keith Andrews (Wolves 1999-2005; Brighton 2013-2014): The 32-cap Republic of Ireland international began his career at Wolves after graduating through the academy. He made a total of 72 appearances for the club.

He had a season-long loan spell at Brighton during the 2013/14 season, where he made 37 appearances, helping the club reach the play-off semi-finals before suffering a thumping 6-2 aggregate defeat to Derby County.

Sam Vokes (Wolves 2008-2012; Brighton 2012): The towering centre-forward was on Wolves' books for four years, but much of that time was spent out on loan. He was shipped out to six separate clubs before Burnley signed him on a permanent deal in 2012.

Brighton were one of those six clubs, but his short time on the south coast wasn't particularly fruitful, as he netted just three times in 15 appearances.

Ade Akinbiyi (Brighton 1994; Wolves 1999-2001): The Nigerian forward had a short spell on loan at Brighton, where he scored four goals in seven appearances.

His two-year stint in the West Midlands saw him find the back of the net 16 times in 40 outings before he was snapped up by Leicester City, who paid a club-record £5.5m to sign him.

Steve Claridge (Wolves 1998; Brighton 2004): The forward made a total of six appearances during his five-month spell at Wolves and only five during a one-month stretch with Albion.

What is Wolves' biggest win over Brighton?

28th December 1991 – Wolves 2-0 Brighton: It's been over three decades since Wolves' biggest victory over the Seagulls, which was actually not a thrashing by any means.

Mark Burke opened the scoring in the second minute before Andy Mutch, who was well known for his strike partnership with Steve Bull, added a second.

The victory came during the 1991/92 season in the second tier. The West Midlanders finished the campaign in 11th, whilst Albion suffered relegation, finishing 23rd.

What is Brighton's biggest win over Wolves?

29th April 2023 – Brighton 6-0 Wolves: Unsurprisingly, the aforementioned 6-0 drubbing last season is Brighton's biggest win over Saturday's opposition.

It was a result that continued Brighton's assault on the European places, with the victory keeping them within touching distance of the likes of Aston Villa and Tottenham, who they would eventually usurp come the season's end.

The gap in quality between the two sides over the last 12 months has started to widen, and it could be another tough afternoon for Wolves at the weekend if the current trends continue.

Key match stats

  • It will be the 41st meeting between the pair
  • Wolves have only beaten Brighton once in the top flight
  • Brighton have won their last four matches against Wolves
  • The last three fixtures between these two sides have produced 14 goals

England T20 talking points: Vince, Buttler and the captain

Albeit from a limited number of matches, England’s T20I form has been less consistent than their 50-over exploits. What might come up for debate during the tri-series?

Andrew McGlashan04-Feb-2018.Reserve No. 3Joe Root was eventually persuaded to take a rest from this series (although that was perhaps with a focus on the IPL only for him to be overlooked for that) which means there is a vacancy at No. 3. Presuming Alex Hales and Jason Roy are fit to take the opening positions – and Roy is rated ’50-50′ by Eoin Morgan for Hobart due to a back spasm – that is likely to leave James Vince and Dawid Malan vying for first drop unless England get funky and utilise David Willey. Malan made an impressive 78 on debut against South Africa last year and would provide another left-handed option at the top of the order. Vince made his T20 debut in 2015 and was named Man of the Series against Pakistan in the UAE but has played just two matches since. His pretty 30s may not go a long way to winning Tests, but can certainly influence a T20.Buttler’s best positionThere is the potential for so much flexibility with England’s batting order, but that also needs to be weighed against players knowing their roles. Without doubt Jos Buttler is a player capable of scoring T20 hundreds were he to bat the majority of an innings – Hales remains England’s lone century-maker in the format – but he is among the finest closers, batting first or second, of an innings in the world. Thirty-nine of his 49 T20I innings have been at No. 5 or 6, but two of his five half-centuries have come in the top four: an unbeaten 73 opening against Sri Lanka and an unbeaten 66 against the same opposition at No. 4 in the World T20. If an innings is beyond the 10-over mark when the second wicket falls there is a strong case for Buttler being the next man in.The captain’s formIt’s a change of formats, so it’s unwise to draw too many conclusions come success or failure, but there will be a focus on Morgan’s run-scoring in this series. He was the least convincing of the top order in the one-dayers against Australia. As with the 50-over side, there is a clamour for spots in the top order with Root and Ben Stokes to slot back in at some point in the future. Morgan’s leadership carries a lot of weight but at some point the conversation may need to be had as to whether he sees himself in the role for the 2020 World T20 or if the 2019 World Cup could be an end-point. Morgan has occasionally left himself out of the T20 side to give Jos Buttler captaincy experience, most notably in the deciding match against South Africa last year.Horses for coursesMorgan has said that England will adjust their plans – particularly around the bowling attack – dependent on each ground during the tri-series, taking particular note of the varying dimensions. England’s series takes them to Hobart, Melbourne, Wellington, Hamilton and potentially Auckland for the final, the latter with some of the shortest straight boundaries in the world. It could be that England don’t always employ two spinners, particularly in the continued absence of Stokes to balance the side.Pace-bowling squeezeThere is certainly no shortage of quicks in the squad to mix-and-match with – seven if you include Jake Ball who stayed with the party as injury cover. Among them is the uncapped 19-year-old Sam Curran, but Stokes and Chris Woakes are surely in England’s best XI. While plenty of rotation can be expected over the next two years – and names not in the squad, or even in the frame, could feature – there won’t be room for them all going forward and there is plenty to play for among the pace-bowling unit.

£20k-p/w Premier League Striker Drops Arsenal Transfer Hint

With the transfer market still open for another few weeks, it's always useful to know big players would be open to joining your team – just ask Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp how that can derail any summer spending plans…

Well, the good news for Arsenal is that a Premier League striker has gone on the record as saying likes the way the Gunners play, suggesting he'd be keen on a move in the future.

What's the latest Arsenal transfer news?

Mikel Arteta's men have already completed some big bits of business this summer with the likes of Declan Rice, Kai Havertz, Jurrien Timber and David Raya all heading to North London.

However, the club may not be done there and with Folarin Balogun expected to make a big move away in the near future, this could potentially open the door up for a new attacker to arrive either this summer or perhaps in January.

Read the latest Arsenal transfer news HERE…

One man who appears to be putting himself in line for such a move is Brentford striker Ivan Toney. Indeed, when talking recently on The Diary Of A CEO podcast, despite admitting he is a fan of Liverpool since his childhood, he shares a certain level of respect for Arsenal and their "passionate" fans.

You can see the specific clip below via Twitter, as Toney opens up on his feelings about the club and his plans for the future, as he appears to drop a bit of a come-and-get-me plea, saying: “The next club I go to, if I was to move, it would be… the right club.

He continued with a smile: "I’ve been a Liverpool fan my whole life but from young, I’ve liked Arsenal, I like watching Arsenal, how they play and how passionate the fans are.”

How much does Ivan Toney earn?

The Brentford striker earns a reported £20k-p/w on a contract that runs out in the summer of 2025, so he may well soon be ready to seriously consider a move away from the Bees. But of course, this might not be easy due to his current ban from football.

The 27-year-old is currently serving an eight-month suspension after accepting that he broke Football Association betting rules – he is not allowed to play again until 17 January next year but can return to training on 17 September.

In the same Diary Of A CEO podcast (via BBC Sport), he opened up on how he is "counting down the days" before he returns to training and said the wait is like "being in football prison".

He said: "The whole football community is big on mental health and then the FA are going to do this and push me away. It's not a place I want people to feel sorry for me. That's the last thing that I want

"So, what if someone not as strong as me in the head is going through this situation and their punishment is they are not allowed at the club – that would break them.

"Right now, not being around the training ground, it does hurt me. I just know when I'm at the training ground, I train harder. It's not a nice feeling. Not being allowed at the training ground is baffling to me.

"I'm counting down the days until I can be training and around the boys. It's like being in football prison at the moment."

Celtic: Rodgers Closing In On Deal To Bring 5 ft 11 Whiz To Parkhead In Late Move

A big update has emerged on Celtic and their attempts to bolster Brendan Rodgers' playing squad before the end of the summer transfer window.

What's the latest Celtic transfer news?

The Hoops have already confirmed the signing of Honduras international winger Luis Palma from Greek side Aris FC this week and they are now on the verge of another two deals.

According to The Scottish Sun, Liverpool central defender Nat Phillips is on his way to Glasgow and the club have agreed a deal to sign Paulo Bernardo from Benfica.

The report claims that the Hoops are set to sign the Portuguese talent on an initial loan deal with an option to make it permanent at the end of the 2023/24 campaign. It does not state exactly how much the purchase option is valued at but does say that it could be upwards of around £6.5m.

How good is Paulo Bernardo?

Rodgers could repeat Celtic's Jota masterclass in a late swoop for the 21-year-old midfielder as the former Bhoys star also joined from Benfica on an initial loan before making a permanent switch to Scotland the following summer.

The ex-Hoops ace had only scored four goals in 52 first-team matches prior to his move to Parkhead but went on to be an outstanding talent for the club throughout his two seasons.

Jota racked up 28 goals and 26 assists in 83 matches for the Scottish champions, which earned him a £25m transfer to Saudi Arabian side Al Ittihad this summer.

Bernardo could now follow in his footsteps as another Benfica youth product who could be an excellent player for Celtic if he is able to translate his academy form over to first-team level with this move to Scotland.

Benfica midfielder Paulo Bernardo.

The Portugal U21 international produced seven goals and five assists in 38 games – one contribution every 3.17 clashes on average – for Benfica B from a central midfield position.

This shows that he has the potential to find the back of the net from the middle of the park and that could make him a superb option for Rodgers as the club's top-scoring central midfielder in the Scottish Premiership was Reo Hatate with six strikes last season.

Jota had scored nine goals and provided eight assists in 47 outings for Benfica B, which works out as a direct goal involvement every 2.76 matches on average.

Bernardo, who was once hailed as an "exciting" prospect by talent scout Jacek Kulig, has also scored five goals in 16 games for Portugal's U21 side, whilst Jota managed five goals in 18 appearances at that level.

These statistics suggest that the 5 foot 11 whiz has the potential to follow in his compatriot's footsteps, albeit in a different position on the pitch, to become a star for Celtic if he is able to translate his B team form for Benfica over to Scottish football in the same way that the £25m magician did.

An initial loan provides the club with the safety net to move on from Bernardo after a season if it does not work out and the option to buy means that they can secure his long-term value at Parkhead if he is a roaring success, like Jota.

Australia pin hopes on big guns to keep series alive

Big Picture

Rinse, repeat. As in Melbourne, so it was in Brisbane: Australia batted first, found themselves well placed after an Aaron Finch hundred, failed to kick on sufficiently, then watched as England overhauled their target with wickets and overs to spare. After almost single-handedly confounding England during the Test series, now it is Steven Smith’s turn to be frustrated. In truth, things look pretty grim. Australia’s canaries are deep in the coalmine and seemingly struggling for air. They have lost nine of their last 10 completed ODIs and face being beaten by England on home soil for the first time in a decade; 2-0 down with three to play does not leave much room for error and they are set to throw everything at England with their first-choice pace attack. While Finch has been a model of consistency at the top of the order, his team-mates have been unable to carry on the good work. With Smith and Travis Head both apparently out of touch, too much has been asked of Mitchell Marsh and Marcus Stoinis, while the decision to bring back Cameron White as a specialist No. 7 also backfired. Chris Lynn’s injury has deprived Australia of a middle-order hitter but the discarded Glenn Maxwell must be looking on with eyebrows raised. For England, the contrast with the Ashes is stark. Imbued with a sense of freedom and certainty in their roles, the limited-overs personnel continue to thrive under Eoin Morgan – whose only (slight) concern is a personal lack of runs. The bowlers were even sharper in executing Morgan’s plans at the Gabba and Chris Woakes then demonstrated England’s depth with the bat to stave off a mini-wobble. The ultra-aggressive approach will come unstuck from time to time but they look in serene form.Joe Root guided the chase as wickets fell•Getty Images

In the spotlight

Finch, David Warner and Smith represents a world-class top three, but Australia’s middle order is looking pretty muddled 18 months out from a World Cup defence. Since the last tournament, their two most productive batsmen at Nos. 4-7 have been George Bailey and Matthew Wade: both of whom appear to be men of the past. Head’s one ODI hundred, meanwhile, came at opener. This much is certain: Australia need a higher output from their engine room.Having seemingly put the trials of the Ashes behind him, Joe Root has once again demonstrated why he is such a highly rated multi-format player (even if his run without a century on tour continues). Innings of 91 not out and 46 not out have calmly steered England in two successful chases, while figures of 2 for 31 with the ball in Brisbane were a reminder that Morgan has a pretty handy sixth bowling option even without Ben Stokes in the side. He will be playing his 100th ODI in Sydney and even with a duck his average will remain over 50 so he will become just the sixth player to have 100 matches and a 50+ average in ODIs.

Teams news

Australia look set to throw everything at England in an attempt to keep the series alive, reuniting the big three fast bowlers for the first time since the Sydney Test. Josh Hazlewood was due to play in Brisbane but was hit by the illness running through the Australia camp, while Pat Cummins was rested. Legspinner Adam Zampa will have to come back into the mix as well, logically as a swap for the failed recall of Cameron White. Tim Paine is set to return in place of Alex Carey, although the debutant keeper was a rare bright spot in Brisbane..Australia (probable) 1 David Warner, 2 Aaron Finch, 3 Steven Smith (capt), 4 Travis Head, 5 Mitchell Marsh, 6 Marcus Stoinis, 7 Tim Paine (wk), 8 Mitchell Starc, 9 Pat Cummins, 10 Adam Zampa, 11 Josh HazlewoodThere is no need for England to change unless injuries spring up. That’s tough on the squad players, but victory in Sydney would open up the chance to try a few different things with the series wrapped up. Conditions in Sydney could see the spin trio come to the fore again..England (probable) 1 Jason Roy, 2 Jonny Bairstow, 3 Alex Hales, 4 Joe Root, 5 Eoin Morgan (capt), 6 Jos Buttler (wk), 7 Moeen Ali, 8 Chris Woakes, 9 Adil Rashid, 10 Liam Plunkett, 11 Mark Wood

Pitch and conditions

The last four ODIs on this ground have seen scores in excess of 300. There was turn on offer during the Test, but over the course of a 100-over day it should remain good for batting. The forecast is for a warm, sunny day.

Stats and trivia

  • Eoin Morgan needs 14 runs to overtake Paul Collingwood as England’s second-highest run-scorer.
  • Travis Head is 54 runs short of 1000 in one-day internationals.
  • Chris Woakes is three wickets away from the 100 mark.

Quotes

“It was frustrating… we got ourselves into a reasonable position with 11 overs to go and everything fell to pieces again. Getting to 270 isn’t good enough against a quality batting line-up like England.”
Steven Smith on Australia’s below-par effort at the Gabba“That’s quite smart captaincy from him, to be able to juggle things round and make sure he had plenty of options at the death was crucial.”

West Indies' last chance for a first win on tour

Unless West Indies win their final match of the tour in Mount Maunganui on Wednesday, they will return home empty-handed

Big pictureMuch like Jay Gatsby pining for the light at the other side of the dock, West Indies must be aching for the comfort of a win. On this trip to New Zealand, they have lost six internationals, not to mention a practice match as well. Unless West Indies win their final match of the tour in Mount Maunganui on Wednesday, they will return home empty-handed, a fate they last suffered in this country in 1999-00.T20s may be West Indies’ favourite format but they presently have access to only six members from the title-winning squad in 2016 – Chris Gayle, Carlos Brathwaite, Andre Fletcher, Samuel Badree, Ashley Nurse, and Jerome Taylor. Along with that handicap came the challenge of bowling with a wet ball on New Year’s Day and the result just wasn’t pretty. The forecast for Wednesday isn’t promising either, with rain predicted in the afternoon. A truncated game might bridge the gulf between the two sides and possibly work in West Indies’ favour.New Zealand, like West Indies, have missed or rotated key players, but their depth has been has been impressive. First-choice fast bowler Trent Boult will be available to play at the Bay Oval and fringe players Seth Rance, Tom Bruce and Anaru Kitchen will be keen to press for longer stints.Form guideNew Zealand: WLWLL (last five completed matches, most recent first)
West Indies: LWWWWIn the spotlightSeth Rance doesn’t have express pace but his ability to move the ball laterally should not be underestimated. After delivering a hooping inswinger to leave Michael Pollard’s stumps an utter mess in the Super Smash, the medium-pacer found himself on the brink of a hat-trick on T20I debut. Cloudy overhead conditions on Wednesday could suit his style of bowling.West Indies’ best chance of squaring the series is through a Chris Gayle assault. After blowing hot in the Bangladesh Premier League knockouts, he has blown cold in New Zealand, managing only 38 runs in three innings so far.Team newsAfter being rested for the first two T20s, Boult is set to return to the team, possibly in place of Doug Bracewell.New Zealand (probable): 1 Martin Guptill, 2 Colin Munro, 3 Kane Williamson (capt), 4 Glenn Phillips (wk), 5 Tom Bruce, 6 Anaru Kitchen, 7 Mitchell Santner, 8 Tim Southee, 9 Seth Rance, 10 Trent Boult, 11 Ish SodhiWest Indies, on the other hand, might consider bringing back Taylor for Kesrick Williams, who has leaked 76 runs in five overs.West Indies (probable): 1 Chris Gayle, 2 Chadwick Walton (wk), 3 Andre Fletcher, 4 Shai Hope, 5 Shimron Hetmyer, 6 Carlos Brathwaite (capt), 7 Rovman Powell, 8 Ashley Nurse, 9 Sheldon Cottrell, 10 Kesrick Williams/Jerome Taylor, 11 Samuel BadreePitch and conditionsAll three completed T20Is at this venue have been won by the team batting first. But the possibility of rain and early swing could tempt the captain into bowling first, as Carlos Brathwaite did on Monday.Stats and trivia If New Zealand win the series 2-0, they will leapfrog Pakistan to become the top-ranked T20I team Martin Guptill and Colin Munro have hit 130 sixes between them in T20Is. Gayle alone has struck 103 sixes.
