England facing ref trouble?! Journalists & fans question appointment of Felix Zwayer as official for Netherlands Euro 2024 semi-final after Jude Bellingham & match-fixing controversy

UEFA announced the appointment of German referee Felix Zwayer as the official for England and the Netherlands' semi-final and fans cannot believe it.

  • Zwayer to referee Netherlands vs England
  • Zwayer has a history of match-fixing
  • Fans worried as Bellingham criticised the German
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Zwayer has been a UEFA-approved referee since 2004 and has taken charge of three games at Euro 2024 so far, and he will now officiate the semi-final in Dortmund. However, the trouble started when fans realised Zwayer was the same referee Jude Bellingham had criticised during his time at Borussia Dortmund and questioned the German referee's past with match-fixing. England fans are now concerned that Zwayer and Bellingham's past confrontations may cause the refereeing in the game to be biased towards Ronald Koeman's side during the crucial semi-final.

  • WHAT THE FANS ARE SAYING

Viaplay journalist @JanAageFjortoft wrote on X: "I am not sure what UEFA are thinking by putting Zwayer at the England game. Back in 2021, Bellingham told me this after the game. And was fined €40,000 by German football officials"

England fan @lovebellingham wrote: "Really don’t understand why they would have Zwayer ref the England game. Especially when everyone knows what happened between him and Jude when he was at Dortmund lmao this is stupid"

X user @AlanRzepa said: "Baffled as to why he’s allowed to officiate at the top level if he was found guilty of match-fixing"

@lulu11_lu posted on X: "Again someone who has match fixed before should never referee again especially BIG matches like have you gone mad, UEFA. You don’t have any other less shitty German referees than Felix Zwayer???"

England fan @ydayda11 blamed UEFA: "Assigned a known match fixer aka Felix Zwayer to the semifinal England vs. Netherlands. THIS IS OUTRAGEOUS!!! There’s an obvious conflict of interest: one English player called him out on this in 2021! You’re trying to make sure England go home! DISGUSTING"

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

In 2005, the German became embroiled in a match-fixing controversy in which Zwayer acknowledged accepting money from Robert Hoyzer, a banned referee who was charged with match-fixing but not with changing the result of a game. Zwayer was banned for six months as soon as this was discovered. Zwayer took a two-month hiatus from officiating in December 2021 in response to remarks made by Bellingham after Borussia Dortmund lost 3-2 to Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga.

  • WHAT NEXT FOR ZWAYER?

The German has become one of the best referees in Europe since that incident and has overseen a number of crucial clashes. He will likely approach the semi-final as a normal game, however, a rise in temperature may see the German called into question.

The Hale End sensation who could make Arsenal forget about Ivan Toney

Do Arsenal need a striker? Probably. However, their 6-0 drubbing of West Ham United last Sunday proved that they can indeed score a bucket load of goals without that typical no.9 in their system.

Leandro Trossard was a menace to the Irons backline, scoring the fourth goal after picking up a lovely little pocket of space inside the area.

A week prior Kai Havertz had also flourished in that false 9 role, proving to be a "handful" – in the words of Ray Parlour – to the Liverpool defenders in that 3-1 win at the Emirates.

So, where do the Gunners go from here? Well, after a run of three games around the New Year period where they scored just once across three games, a new forward will likely still arrive in the summer.

Who is that man? Well, there's one name on the lips of plenty at the moment; Ivan Toney.

The latest on Arsenal's hunt for Ivan Toney

With the threat of exceeding financial fair play guidelines in January Arsenal decided against signing anyone.

Even if they had the money, trying to get any deal over the line would have been a difficult task. After all, Toney had been touted in some circles as an £80m transfer waiting to happen while another target in Victor Osimhen is set to cost over £100m.

Arsenal reportedly 'want' the Brentford striker and Bees manager Thomas Frank has already admitted it's likely he'll be moved on in the summer.

Frank recently stated: "It is relatively obvious that Ivan Toney will probably be sold this summer. "We also know what he is worth. I don't think there are many strikers in the world who are better than him right now."

Toney's response was rather damning, suggesting the Dane no longer wanted him in west London. This feels like a marriage reaching breaking point as the next transfer window fast approaches.

Mikel Arteta and Co seemingly have the perfect opportunity to acquire the striker, then, but agreeing on a fee for a man with three goals in four outings since his return from a betting ban will be the major stumbling block.

Therefore, are there other options? Well, turning to the academy, something Arteta hasn't favoured too much, could be a solution.

Arsenal's academy solution

The Arsenal boss has overseen the development of Bukayo Saka during his tenure in north London but as this Arsenal squad gets better and the demands become greater, he's not favoured the usage of the Hale End academy.

Considering Saka's breakthrough it's rather disappointing. It meant the end for the free-scoring Folarin Balogun in London and it's also seen Omari Hutchinson bite the dust too, moving to Chelsea.

Lino Sousa has now departed for Aston Villa but thankfully, some of the club's brightest young talents remain. One of those is Ethan Nwaneri.

The 16-year-old became the youngest ever player to feature in the Premier League when he was a substitute against none other than Toney's Brentford, and was used again for the first time since that debut outing versus West Ham last weekend.

In time another 16-year-old could become Arsenal's striking solution. Toney may well be signed but if the club are priced out in a few months time and thus, opt to stick with their current options in the summer, we could well see a blossoming academy talent unleashed sparingly.

That happens to be Chido Obi-Martin. You may well know the name. He went viral earlier this season for scoring ten goals in one game against Liverpool. Yes, ten. 10. It's a staggering accomplishment.

Talk about putting pressure on yourself too. In an official capacity, the vibrant attacker has found the net three times in six outings for Jack Wilshere's U18s this term and has already made his debut for the U21 side, featuring twice in Premier League 2 to date.

The teenager seems to have a habit of scoring goals by the bucketload, netting a hat-trick versus Southampton this term and also scoring four goals in one game for Denmark's U16s back in August.

Having trained with the first team too, it's clear that Obi-Martin is on the radar of Arteta and if Nwaneri's fleeting appearances are anything to go by, he could be seen in the first-team before too long.

Described as a "very special" talent by Arsenal pundit Adrian Clarke, it would be unrealistic to suggest Obi-Martin could get anywhere near Toney at this moment in time.

That said, should the Gunners fail to get a move over the line this summer then diving into the academy could be a serious consideration for Arteta and his coaching staff. The teenager will not become an overnight hit but if they invest in his development, they could unearth a prospect capable of becoming a real star in a few years time.

Three players over the age of 23 can be selected in Olympic squads. Egypt hoped to have Salah in their plans for a trip to Tokyo, only to see Liverpool refuse to sanction said selection, and history has repeated itself three years on.

WHAT OLYMPIC CHIEF SAID

As a result, with Salah accepting that he will form part of pre-season at Anfield under new Reds boss Arne Slot, Egypt are having to draw up alternative plans when it comes to carrying their flag into Paris. Yasser Idris, head of Egypt's Olympic committee, has told : “The flag bearer shouldn't only be a football player, Salah is an exception due to his popularity in the country and worldwide and that's why we were planning for him to do the honours if he was present. Now it will be Sarah Samir (weightlifter) and Ahmed Gendi (modern pentathlon) because they both have won Olympic medals in the past.”

West Ham now eyeing underrated Premier League manager to replace Moyes

West Ham are thought to be keen on an "underrated" Premier League manager as David Moyes' future remains a hot topic of discussion.

Moyes divides opinion as West Ham apparently offer new deal

The Scotsman could leave at the end of this season, following over four successful years in the West Ham dugout.

"10/10" manager could emerge as late candidate to replace Moyes at West Ham

He’s been hailed for his last job.

ByEmilio Galantini Feb 29, 2024

Taking over amid their 2019/2020 relegation battle, Moyes eventually steered them to safety and went to guide West Ham to European qualification in each of his full seasons as manager.

Perhaps his biggest highlight was helping West Ham to their first major trophy since the 1980s last year, with the Hammers clinching a Europa Conference League after a memorable night in Prague.

However, there have been some complaints over Moyes' style of play and their league form since the summer of 2022 has been pretty dwindling overall. West Ham's manager, though, did come out this time last week to suggest that the club have offered him a new contract – and he is the one delaying an extension.

"I've had really good conversations with the owners, with David Sullivan and Karren Brady," said Moyes on signing a potential new contract. "There's a contract there for me and I'm the one deciding I want to wait until the end of the season. There are plenty of reasons [to wait]. I've got to make sure it's the right thing for the club, for me and my family. I've spoken to the board. I've had a fabulous four years. We'll sort it out but I'm happy to wait."

The 60-year-old's deal expires at the end of this season, so West Ham have been exploring alternative managers to Moyes for 2024/2025.

West Ham eyeing potential Gary O'Neil move

A name who hasn't been regularly mentioned is Wolves boss Gary O'Neil, despite the Englishman's excellent job at Molineux this season.

Wolves boss Gary O'Neil

Journalist Dean Jones, speaking to GiveMeSport, now claims that West Ham have their eyes on O'Neil and are admirers of the tactician – who has guided Wolves to a solid position in the table and also kept Bournemouth safely afloat during his time there.

“Now that Wolves are getting towards the stage where they are safe, I guess the fear isn't over whether Gary O'Neil is good enough to be their manager. The fear might begin to be whether they are going to be able to keep hold of O’Neil now," said Jones.

“At the moment, we're getting towards the stage where West Ham are going to be looking for a new manager. While Gary O'Neil isn't going to be the top target for them, I have heard that he is somebody they like.

“I would be surprised if he didn't at least crop up on a list of names if and when Moyes does end up losing his job, so that is one to keep in mind. As soon as he starts getting linked to West Ham, I think Wolves fans will suddenly love him even more and want him to stay.”

The 40-year-old has been called "underrated" by sections of the media, and quite rightfully so.

Negotiations underway: Borna Barisic is now edging closer to Rangers exit

Rangers defender Borna Barisic is now edging closer to a summer exit from Ibrox, with negotiations believed to be underway with a European club.

Rangers possible incomings and outgoings this summer

The Gers may be focusing on possibly winning four trophies this season – the Scottish League Cup is already in the bag – but that doesn't mean that constant focus isn't also on the club's transfer situation.

Both incoming and outgoings are expected at Rangers once the season comes to an end, and the Scottish Premiership outfit have been linked with plenty of new signings of late. One player who has been backed to seal a move to Ibrox is Hearts striker Lawrence Shankland, with Frank McAvennie admitting he can see a deal going through to sign the boyhood Gers supporter:

"No disrespect to Hearts, but if an offer comes in from Rangers, Shankland will go there, that’s what I’ve been told by my sources. He’s a Rangers supporter, even though he’s comfortable at Hearts."

Rangers winger Abdallah Sima.

Permanent moves are potentially in the offing for pair Abdallah Sima and Fabio Silva, too, with their respective parent clubs Brighton and Wolves seemingly willing to sell them for good if the right offers come along.

That's not to say that other current Rangers players won't move on to pastures new, however, with the likes of Barisic, John Lundstram and Kemar Roofe all out of contract at the end of the campaign, among others.

Barisic edges nearer to Rangers exit

According to Sports Digitale [via Sport Witness], Barisic has "started negotiations" with Trabzonspor over a summer move to the club. The left-back was linked with a switch away during the January transfer window but ended up staying put.

His agent is expected to "arrive" in Turkey in the "coming days", in order to discuss the business, with Barisic departing on a free transfer when his contract expires. The same report also cites an update from Sabah, who claim that a deal is now "very close" to being agreed, with further progress expected imminently.

Borna Barisic

Barisic has been an impressive servant for Rangers since arriving from Osijek back in 2018, racking up a total of 230 appearances for the Scottish giants. He has also been hailed by former manager Steven Gerrard in the past, who said of him:

"Borna was outstanding last night, he is the Croatian left-back and he is used to these high-pressure games. "He is very highly respected by the staff and in the dressing room."

At 31 years of age, Barisic arguably no longer represents a long-term option for Rangers, however, so the idea of suddenly giving him a shiny new contract doesn't make a lot of sense, especially as he is among the top earners at Ibrox, taking home a reported £21,000 per week currently.

A move to Trabzonspor could make sense for all parties, allowing the 35-cap Croatian currently one big more challenge in Europe, potentially seeing out the rest of his career in Turkey.

Ollie Pope shows England class as Scott Borthwick lays solid foundation

Borthwick became the first Surrey batsman to score two Championship hundreds this summer

Surrey 246 for 2 (Borthwick 109*, Pope 78*) v NottinghamshireA century from Scott Borthwick and a strong batting performance from Ollie Pope on the day of his England Test recall defined proceedings before cloud, gloom and rain brought play to an early conclusion during the evening session. Borthwick played patiently for his hundred, reaching 109 from 243 balls, while Pope also displayed his class as he eased to 78 not out.Surrey played for much of the day like reigning champions should – despite their position second from bottom of Division One. Nottinghamshire, the team below, were a stark contrast. Already relegated and with their heart-breaking weekend T20 Blast semi-final loss still fresh, they seemed mentally checked out for the season. They played without direction and with little strategy.Nottinghamshire were not helped by a batsman-friendly pitch and the ease with which Surrey played for much of the day can attest to that. They may also feel aggrieved by the constant changing of balls. The umpires had decided to change the ball twice before the seventh over, and a fourth was selected in the 33rd over.Jake Ball showed international pedigree early on, but Surrey’s opening batsmen saw him off with relatively few jitters. The pair put on 70 for the first wicket, before Paul Coughlin produced the only truly dangerous over of the day. The Nottinghamshire strategy of bowling down the leg side to Mark Stoneman paid off after he edged behind, before 19-year old Jamie Smith was also caught behind for a four-ball duck, pushing too hard at one which moved away slightly.Pope then joined Borthwick at the crease. As his recall to the England Test squad to tour New Zealand was announced, 21-year old Pope displayed the traits that have seen him likened to James Vince and Ian Bell, where batting appears easy, elegant and effortless. Out for much of the season through injury, this match is only his fifth in the Championship. However, with this innings included he has accumulated 533 runs at an average of 88.83 in eight innings. To put that into context, Stoneman is Surrey’s top scorer this season, with 685 runs, but has required 13 matches and 23 innings to do so.His innings here wasn’t without blemish though. Pope escaped a stumping chance and was lucky that Ben Slater dropped a low catch at midwicket too. England needn’t worry. One gets the sense when watching Pope that as the format of cricket increases in difficulty, so does his level of concentration.Surrey’s batsmen have endured a disappointing summer. Following the home loss to Kent in July, Surrey’s director of cricket, Alec Stewart, said: “People say we have batsmen out of form. No, we have batsmen out of runs. They are hitting the ball well, but their shot selection is costing them dearly.” Unfortunately for Surrey, the runs never really came until Pope’s return.Borthwick’s shot selection on this occasion was imperious, offering only a difficult catching chance to leg slip during his entire innings. His innings also marked a batting milestone of which he can be personally proud: as he swept Matt Carter to the backward square leg boundary, he became the first Surrey batsman to hit a second century in the County Championship this summer. Only Pope and captain Rory Burns did so last year, finishing the season with four each in total. The side have missed that weight of runs and are lucky only one team is being relegated from Division One this season.

Shoaib Malik has perfect evening as Amazon Warriors remain unbeaten

Shoaib Malik had a stellar all-round evening. He made an unbeaten 37-ball 67 to lift his team to 218. He made a bold move to bowl legspin at Chris Gayle early on, and eight straight overs of spin at Jamaica Tallawahs to strangle them before Andre Russell could come in. He closed the day with crucial catches, smart bowling changes, and a massive 81-run win. It was Guyana Amazon Warriors’ fifth straight win, and they remain unbeaten this season.A fifty from Brandon King, Shimron Hetmyer’s 44, and Imran Tahir’s two wickets were the other key performances for Amazon Warriors. Tallawahs are now in last place with only one win in six matches.Pristine Hetmyer, pesky SmithJade Dernbach got opener Chandrapaul Hemraj with his first ball, but was taken to the cleaners by Shimron Hetmyer after Amazon Warriors were put in. Dernbach was taken for four boundaries in his second over, starting with a lovely front-foot pull past mid-on, and some deft touches to find the boundaries at point and fine leg. At the other end, Brandon King was far from comfortable, swishing and playing away from his body outside off with little success. At one point he was 9 off 15. Tallawahs, however, continued to be generally on the shorter side allowing Hetmyer to cash in with plenty of stylish front-foot pulls.Dwayne Smith’s wobbly seaming deliveries bothered King even more, coming in and usually shaping away off the pitch as the batsman kept pushing away. Smith snuck past Hetmyer’s inside edge too, dismissing him for 44 after clipping the top of off stump. In his first three overs, he went for only 20 and took a wicket. But some more short-pitched bowling from Zahir Khan and the rest of the attack kept even King in the hunt, as he managed to keep finding the boundaries. A fair percentage of those came off edges, but he signed off against Smith by ruining his figures – after four dot balls in the bowler’s final over, King hit two sixes to bring up his fifty. When he got out, Amazon Warriors had 117 in the 13th over.Malik’s finishing touchesShoaib Malik was also fed his share of short balls, but the Amazon Warriors captain barely needed any help on the night. He was deft, using angles to find the third man boundary off the back foot, the point boundary off the front foot, and had a compulsive eye for the extra cover fence as well. Scattered into this mix was one emphatic slog onto the roof against Ramaal Lewis and a drill over long-off against the offspinner, too. Sherfane Rutherford chipped in with an effective 6-ball 15, as Malik hauled the team to 218 with his unbeaten 67, helped along greatly by the home team who dropped him twice, and dropped four catches overall. The spin gamble worksMalik’s great evening didn’t stop with his batting innings. In their defence, his strategy to get his spinners’ overs out of the way early proved to be decisive. It was Chris Green, the offspinner, who took the new ball as usual, but from the other end came Imran Tahir. Gayle smoked a generous full toss over midwicket from him first ball, but Tahir followed with one that held its line and had the opener caught off the leading edge at short third man. That early dent grew exponentially thereon to damage Tallawahs’ chase.Legspinner Qais Ahmed came on for the third over, although a slew of loose deliveries handed Tallawahs some respite. But Tahir got three overs at a stretch, and with Malik switching between Green and Qais at the other end, Tallawahs’ start was stifled. Walton stepped out and sliced a Tahir full toss to extra cover, Javelle Glen top-edged to Malik at extra cover off Green, and even Qais had redemption – George Worker swatting a full toss straight to long-on.Malik’s decision to bowl eight straight overs of spin left Tallawahs at 51 for 4, with the required rate rapidly climbing, and theoretically leaving little in terms of a release for Russell.Getting past RussellStill, Russell took off straightaway. In the ninth over, it was still spin, with Green bowling around the wicket. Russell expertly chopped his first ball to the point boundary, got a six next ball at long-on off a complete mis-hit, and finished the over at 16 off five with a smart chop over point. Those five balls seemed to have made some kind of an impact.Keemo Paul came on for the first over of pace in the 10th over, and his nervous slower balls kept being dug in short. Two of them were dismissed over midwicket consecutively by Russell, and even Glenn Phillips helped himself to one over square leg as 21 came off the over.Tahir dropped a tough return catch of Russell next over, and the allrounder had settled in nicely on 38 off 16 when Odean Smith was brought on in the 13th over.It was Malik’s last gamble on the night, effectively handing Odean the responsibility of bowling four straight overs into the 19th. And it was a gamble that worked. The fourth ball was a short one wide outside off and Russell’s attempted hoick was pouched at extra cover. It was Malik who completed the catch. And, really, the match. In 12 balls, Tallawahs lost five wickets to fall from 111 for 4 to 120 for 9. Three of those wickets came from one Keemo Paul over, and Malik even managed to add a run-out to his bag.

Following Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Brentford, Chelsea now sit a whopping 19 points adrift of fourth place, with supporters showing their frustration by booing and chanting against both Boehly and Pochettino vs the Bees.

"I think the performances have been very good, I’m so happy with the performances," Pochettino said when asked about supporters' frustration.

"Yes, and if they want to listen, perfect. If not, what can I do? They'll keep booing. I'm giving my best to this team. But we cannot blame the fans. My message is: Okay, they need to show their frustration – through who? I prefer to me rather than to the team. I prefer that, I am strong. I am sure that in time we will change the perception.”

There have been rumours regarding Pochettino’s future in charge at Stamford Bridge, but latest reports have suggested that the Argentine will get until the end of the season. However, Chelsea appear to be drawing up a list of potential replacements, going off a new report.

Chelsea eyeing Roberto De Zerbi move

According to The Guardian’s Jacob Steinberg, Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi is a potential Pochettino replacement alongside Sporting CP manager Ruben Amorim.

The Blues have history with Brighton, most recently securing a deal for head of recruitment Sam Jewell.

The report on De Zerbi states that he ‘could leave Brighton at the end of the season’ and is on Liverpool’s shortlist to replace Jurgen Klopp, whereas Manchester United are keen, should they sack Erik ten Hag.

De Zerbi has beaten both those Premier League managers in the past, alongside Mikel Arteta. He has also been praised by Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola, who hailed the 4-2-3-1 boss last year.

"There is no team playing the way they play – it's unique. I had the feeling when he arrived the impact he would have in the Premier League would be great – I didn't expect him to do it in this short space of time.

"He creates 20 or 25 chances per game, better by far than most opponents. He monopolises the ball in a way it hasn't been for a long time. They deserve completely the success they have."
