Tottenham eyeing £21 million forward they’re convinced is a "huge talent"

Tottenham Hotspur are convinced that a forward valued at £21 million is a "huge talent", and they now want to sign him for manager Ange Postecoglou this summer.

Spurs targeting new goalscorer and playmaker

According to some reliable media sources, Spurs are in search of more creativity both out wide and further forward.

To finally replace club legend Harry Kane, who joined Bayern Munich in a multi-million pound deal last summer, Tottenham are believed to be in the market for a new striker this summer. Brentford star Ivan Toney is among the names linked, with former Spurs scout Bryan King even urging the club to do a deal.

“Toney, that is who Tottenham need to go and sign,” King said to Tottenham News.

“He is worth the extra money, and if Spurs want to move to the next level that is the player they need to convince to join them. Spurs need to make that step and guarantee they will finish in the top four next season, and Toney is the player who will help them do that.

“They can go through Europe and pick out centre-forwards if they like, but Toney is an England international, Premier League proven and he is the player that the club need to replace Harry Kane.”

Meanwhile, as well as going forward, trusted media members like Fabrizio Romano have recently claimed that Spurs could bring in a new star winger to help with goals and assists – name-dropping both Raphinha and Pedro Neto as potential options.

Pedro Neto for Wolves

“Look, a player they appreciate for a long time is Raphinha from Barcelona. We know the financial situation at Barcelona is not easy, so he could be one of the names. They will look at that kind of player," said Romano to JD Football.

"Another player they appreciate is Pedro Neto, but he has this issue with his injuries, so I’m not sure Liverpool, Tottenham or the other clubs following the player will be prepared to play big money for Pedro Neto this summer. That kind of player is the priority for Tottenham, I see them going for that kind of winger, a quality player to help with goals and assists."

Of course, Spurs only have so much to play with in terms of transfer kitty, meaning they'll need to weigh up their next moves carefully. A more astute alternative to the names mentioned could now be Lyon forward Rayan Cherki, and reports suggest he only cost around £21 million.

Tottenham want to sign Cherki and think he's a "huge talent"

According to HITC and journalist Graeme Bailey, Tottenham are among the clubs eyeing a move for Cherki this summer, with all interested sides believing he's a "huge talent" – including Spurs.

Lyon's Rayan Cherki

PSG are also chasing the Ligue 1 sensation, who's bagged six assists in 33 Ligue 1 appearances, so Postecoglou's side will face stiff competition if they decide to formalise their interest with an approach.

Chelsea willing to pay crazy price to sign "world-class" Olise alternative

Mauricio Pochettino's mutually agreed departure from Chelsea last month might have split opinion among supporters but the imminent appointment of Enzo Maresca hints toward an exciting future.

The Blues enjoyed a second-half-of-season resurgence to rise from midtable and finish sixth in the Premier League, however, Manchester United's FA Cup final triumph over Manchester City consigned the Stamford Bridge side to Europa Conference League football.

Manchester United players celebrate

Expect a summer rife with activity, for plenty of players need to be sold and plenty more have been touted for a move to west London, with Todd Boehly lining up an exciting new name.

Chelsea transfer news

According to Spanish reports, Chelsea are prepared to pay crazy money – in excess of €100m (£86m) – to sign Ousmane Dembele from Paris Saint-Germain, just one year after the Ligue 1 champions signed him from Barcelona for around £43.5m.

PSG forward Ousmane Dembele.

PSG have lost their prized performer Kylian Mbappe to Real Madrid this summer and Luis Enrique's team are understood to be in the market for new forwards, which could see Dembele sold too if the aforementioned figure is met.

Dembele, a right winger, is viewed as a player capable of leading Maresca's project, and while he would cost a pretty penny, he might just be the perfect player to add to and improve on the Stamford Bridge first team.

Why Ousmane Dembele would succeed at Chelsea

Chelsea want a right-sided attacker, with Crystal Palace phenomenon Michael Olise at the top of the list and even appearing to favour a move to west London over a transfer to Old Trafford, but it's wise that Paul Winstanley and Co have identified potential alternatives.

Dembele might just prove to be the cream of that crop, with his six goals and 14 assists from just 33 starts for PSG underscoring the value that he could bring to Maresca's system.

While it's true that the 43-cap international has not enjoyed his finest football in the French capital, he had produced some breathtaking moments in Catalonia for Barcelona and started six matches at the 2022 World Cup, having previously featured during Les Bleus' global triumph of 2018, in France.

In Spain, Dembele scored 40 goals and supplied 43 assists across 185 matches, and while fitness issues stifled his progress somewhat, he has showcased his skills on the biggest stage.

Indeed, Dembele offers talent and on-pitch product that could lift Chelsea's first team but he also offers an abundance of trophy-winning success to provide Maresca's youthful team with the balance it needs to merge exciting performances with silver-shining success.

As per FBref, Dembele ranks among the top 9% of attacking midfielders and wingers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for assists, the top 2% for shot-creating actions, the top 5% for passes attempted and progressive passes, the top 1% for progressive carries and the top 7% for successful take-ons per 90.

His playmaking ability would offer the Blues something somewhat lacking. Cole Palmer's absurd breakout season at Chelsea saw him plunder 25 goals and 15 assists in all competitions but creativity has been comparatively sparse elsewhere, with Conor Gallagher's second-most tally of nine assists impressive, but the box-to-box midfielder is being heavily touted with a move away.

Dembele might lack a goalscoring threat but his quality as a supplier is actually just what Maresca's squad needs, with his pace and physical strengths perfect to stretch lines and create space for peers – such as Palmer – to profit from.

Moreover, the France international has been dubbed a "world-class talent" in the past by talent scout Jacek Kulig, having enjoyed a rich and trophy-laden career both domestically and with his French nation.

The £331k-per-week star is not majorly similar to Olise in regard to playing style but he does offer flair and creativity that would make him a wonderful alternative.

Olise, one of the Premier League's most coveted players, endured an injury-hit 2023/24 campaign but still managed to cement himself as one of the standouts, with Kulig even describing him as "one of the best wide playmakers in Europe" after his exploits, clinching ten goals and six assists from just 14 starts in the top-flight and spearheading Palace's resurgence under Oliver Glasner.

With a centre-forward on the agenda at Stamford Bridge and the aforementioned Palmer utterly breathtaking in his goalscoring prowess, Dembele might just be the perfect player to augment the frontline, proving to have the ball-carrying and playmaking skills to rival that of Olise.

Looking at the table above, it can be noted that both players possess exceptional playmaking qualities and are both deadly in driving the ball forward, with Dembele's electric-paced style actually placing him above Olise.

Compare this with Madueke, for example, who averaged 1.6 dribbles per game in the Premier League this season, and the magnitude of having such a player on the right flank is illuminated. Chelsea need to secure this profile before the start of the forthcoming season to add that vital final dimension to the wide positions – especially when considering the return to continental competition.

Olise might be the first-choice target, but earmarking the Frenchman as a fallback would certainly not be a bad idea.

Derby in talks with "major talent" despite only one appearance this season

After securing automatic promotion back into the Championship, Derby County have shifted their focus towards their summer plans, with their first priority seemingly keeping hold of a future star.

Derby transfer news

The Rams weren't always on course to secure League One promotion, but Paul Warne's side battled well in the end to deservedly return to England's second division, finishing five points above closest challengers Bolton Wanderers.

The task must now be to put a squad together which is capable of staying up in the Championship – in an ideal world, this promotion will only be the start despite their limited finances. It wasn't so long ago when Frank Lampard's Derby young side were gunning for the Premier League and that's where the Rams must get back to.

It's not just the transfer market that will help ensure that survival and more, however. Those at Pride Park must also keep hold of players this summer, including youngster Darren Robinson.

According to Pete O'Rourke of Football Insider, Derby are in advanced talks with Robinson over a new deal at the club. As things stand, the 19-year-old is set to become a free agent at the end of the season in what would be a disaster for the Rams. The hope will be that the lure of Championship football is enough to convince the defensive midfielder to stay put, despite only making one appearance in the senior side this term.

It's then next season that Robinson will be looking to secure more first-team opportunities. As Derby earned promotion in the current campaign, the Northern Irishman's only showing came in the EFL trophy against Wolverhampton Wanderers' U21s.

At a crossroads, the next few weeks will be crucial for Robinson's future, whether he decides to stay put at Derby or seek opportunities elsewhere.

"Major talent" Robinson needs first-team minutes

Given the fact that he's yet to really be handed an opportunity under Warne, it's not too surprising to see Robinson's future still up in the air. The midfielder needs first team minutes to progress and that must come next season, even with Derby now in the Championship. Journalist Josh Bunting is certainly among those who'll be waiting to see Robinson progress, having handed him significant praise at the end of last year.

Described as a "major talent", Derby should do everything they can to renew Robinson's current deal and avoid dropping the ball entirely by allowing a free exit this summer. The last thing the Rams should want is to watch their youngster leave for nothing, before becoming worth the type of transfer fee they could use to improve Warne's side even further.

Everton now make first move to sign in-demand "sensation" for Dyche

With a small budget to work with this summer, Everton have reportedly turned their attention towards landing a future star ahead of Brighton & Hove Albion.

Everton transfer news

The Toffees find themselves at a crossroads with no sign of a completed takeover on the cards and the stark reality approaching that they may need to sell at least one of their star players this summer. As things stand, it's Jarrad Branthwaite and Amadou Onana who are attracting the most interest, with the Toffees reportedly more willing to sacrifice the latter in order to avoid even more FFP punishment.

Everton midfielder Amadou Onana.

Whilst exits would usually result in extensive incomings too, it remains to be seen just how much of Everton's sales will be reinvested into Sean Dyche's current squad, potentially leaving him scratching his head for options.

The Everton boss admitted that his side could be in for a difficult summer if a takeover doesn't go through, telling The Guardian: “If the [777] takeover doesn’t happen, or a takeover, then it will probably be juggling dust, not sand. Because who knows then? You are having to self-generate everything then, I would imagine, because it’s not like there is a pile of cash anywhere so you’ve got to self-generate.

"And if you self-generate, how do you get in what you are losing? If someone leaves, how do you get the next one in who is as good as the one leaving? There is no time for development [of young players] because this club hasn’t got time for that.”

However, that's when they will need to get creative and welcome young players such as Aodhan Doherty. According to The Lancashire Telegraph, Everton have scouted Doherty at Belfast-based outfit Linfield, alongside Brighton & Hove Albion, but both Premier League sides face competition from Blackburn Rovers for the teenager's signature this summer.

"Sensation" Doherty is a future star

Still just 18 years old, Doherty made 14 first-team appearances throughout the season and even came away with two assists to his name by the end of the campaign. A left-winger, the young Northern Irishman could eventually step into Dwight McNeil's role to hand Dyche a future boost. He's already earned plenty of fans in the early stages of his career, including Pete O'Rourke of Football Insider, who dubbed Doherty a "sensation" on X.

Linfield manager David Healy will certainly be among those watching on if Doherty seals a move to the Premier League this summer, having previously said via the Lancashire Telegraph: "Aodhan has trained with us regularly whilst being part of our Academy scholarship programme. I have been impressed with how well he has adapted and has shown a clear willingness to learn.

“I have no doubt that he can improve as we assimilate him into the squad, ensuring he has a controlled level of game time between the first-team and the Swifts."

His recent new contract, which is due to run out in 2026, makes a deal more difficult for Everton to negotiate, but it could quickly become one that is worth the headache this summer.

Emirates Cricket Board hopeful of fan presence at stadiums in UAE for IPL

The Emirates Cricket Board (ECB), hosts of this year’s IPL, is hopeful of at least some fan presence in the stands during the matches. The ECB is finalising preparations to host the IPL from September 19 after India’s struggle to contain the Covid-19 surge prompted its relocation. While it will be impossible to create the usual carnival-like atmosphere in the stands, the ECB is hoping it would not be a totally-behind-closed-doors affair as is the norm during the pandemic.”As hosts, Emirates Cricket Board will work closely with the authorities to seek approval on what protocols need to be followed, this includes fan attendance,” ECB general secretary Mubashshir Usmani said by email. “We will then discuss with the BCCI to assess their spectator requirements.”We want our Asian diaspora, as well as the other expat and Emirati sports-loving fans to be able to watch the action from the stands.”ALSO READ: UAE board looking to fill ’30-50%’ of the stadiums with spectatorsThe 53-day tournament will be played across three venues – Dubai, Sharjah and Abu Dhabi – with the final scheduled for November 10.It is not the first time that the eight-team competition will be held outside India. Indeed, it is believed Arsenal are open to summer offers for Thomas Partey, with the Ghanaian's contract set to expire next year. Fitness issues, combined with the good form of some teammates, have unfortunately reduced Partey's role in comparison to previous seasons.

Uncertainty surrounds his future at the Emirates Stadium as a result, with fellow midfielder Mohamed Elneny also looking set to leave when his deal runs out this summer. Arsenal have been doing some legwork on signing a possible replacement for Partey already, despite the summer window not opening until June 14.

Arsenal's rumoured midfield targets since the beginning of 2024

Douglas Luiz (Aston Villa)

Amadou Onana (Everton)

Martin Zubimendi (Real Sociedad)

Bruno Guimaraes (Newcastle United)

Manu Kone (Borussia Monchengladbach)

Reports claim sporting director Edu and Arsenal chiefs have initiated contact with Bruno Guimaraes and his reps about joining for 24/25, but sealing a deal for the Brazil international would be both expensive and complicated, with Manchester City also lurking for a deal.

His Magpies contract will include a £100 million release clause, but only temporarily. As first revealed by Fabrizio Romano, Guimaraes' exit clause will be valid from the last week of May to the beginning of the final week of June, making it a race between the two title chasers.

A much more astute alternative for a cheaper price could be Real Sociedad star Martin Zubimendi. The Spaniard's contract includes a £52 million release clause, which would be half the price of Guimaraes, and he's even been called the "perfect midfielder" for them.

“My personal feeling is that Zubimendi would be fantastic," said Romano on which midfielder Arsenal should sign. "Even if [Amadou] Onana and Douglas [Luiz] have the advantage of both already knowing the Premier League. Zubimendi is fantastic player, he can help with his vision, quality and intelligence on the ball – he’s the perfect midfielder."

Arteta "working hard" to convince Zubimendi to join Arsenal

According to a report by The Boot Room this week, Arsenal's manager is now taking things into his own hands when it comes to bringing in the 25-year-old.

They claim Arteta is personally "working hard" to tempt Zubimendi into joining Arsenal, and the Sociedad stalwart is said to be the club's top choice to reinforce their midfield.

Other reports claim Arsenal have already bid for Zubimendi pre-summer, so it would appear they're attempting to grant the 42-year-old's wish for Zubimendi's arrival.

He's on around £58,000-per-week according to Football Transfers, so it wouldn't take much to improve his salary, as double that amount wouldn't even put him in touching distance of Arsenal's highest earners.

Anisa Mohammed opts out of West Indies Women's squad for England tour

West Indies will take an 18-player squad on the tour which will include five T20Is in late September

ESPNcricinfo staff27-Aug-2020Anisa Mohammed, the leading wicket-taker in women’s T20Is, has opted out of the five-match tour of England which will be played in a biosecure venue next month.West Indies have named an 18-player squad for the tour, captained by Stafanie Taylor, which includes the uncapped Kaysia Schultz.”All players were given the option to decline selection for any Covid-19 related concern,” a Cricket West Indies statement said. “Anisa Mohammed was the only potential selectee who declined the invitation to travel to England. We thank the ECB for their invitation and the added opportunity to travel with a larger squad affords us the chance to introduce a few younger players to this level of the game, and fast track their development.
