Bid submitted: Man Utd make move to sign "world-class" Rice clone

It’s fair to say that since the departure of Michael Carrick, Manchester United’s midfield has been sub-par.

Casemiro and Paul Pogba were big signings that never truly starred, and a Declan Rice-esque player is missing.

Declan Rice for Arsenal

The Arsenal midfielder is simply unbelievable; he is the driving force of the team, someone that the Red Devils desperately need.

With that in mind, let’s take a look at a Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS target who could become their very own Rice.

Man Utd’s midfield summer plans

It seems as though a midfield overhaul is set to occur at Old Trafford this summer, with Christian Eriksen and Sofyan Amrabat’s futures unclear.

Casemiro is another household name that could be on the move, with Saudi Arabia looking set to be a likely destination for the Brazilian.

As a result, a replacement must be acquired. Well, according to a report from FootballTransfers earlier this week, Man United are interested in signing Leon Goretzka.

Manchester United player Casemiro

Fortunately for United, Goretzka is one of the Bayern Munich players that will be allowed to leave the club this summer.

It’s said that United are keen to sign a partner for Kobbie Mainoo, who has experience; hence, Goretzka is a potential target.

A bid has even been made for the player according to reports in Spain this weekend, with a £34m offer lodged at the request of Ten Hag.

How Leon Goretzka compares to Declan Rice

For over seven years now, Goretzka has been regarded as one of the most talented midfielders in the Bundesliga.

Even though the 29-year-old hasn’t always been the go-to, first-choice player at the heart of Bayern’s midfield, he’s always had a huge impact on the team.

Bayern Munich midfielder Leon Goretzka.

This was certainly the case last season, with Goretzka making 25 starts in the Bundesliga while also featuring ten times in the Champions League.

Throughout quite a few of those games towards the end of the season, the number eight partnered 20-year-old Aleksandar Pavlovic, which proves he can help guide a young-talented midfielder to success.

Nonetheless, according to FBref's 'similar players’ model, Goretzka’s name features alongside Rice’s. Looking at the table below, it's clear to see why,

Firstly, the pair are true all-rounders on the field, impacting the game at both boxes while also having the ability to play as a number eight or slightly deeper as a number six.

One of the biggest similarities that separates them from other positional peers is that they’ve both proved to be match-winners, scoring goals and also creating for the dangerous attackers.

Just like Rice, Goretzka is an extremely technical player who serves as a fantastic progressive outlet to the side, whether that be by playing passes through the lines or carrying the ball forward with intent.

Important, they are both extremely solid defensively, meaning that the duo lack any true faults in their game, hence why Goretzka in particular has been labelled a “world-class” player by journalist Stefan Bienkowski.

For just £34m, Man Utd could secure themselves an absolute bargain this summer, and considering he performs even remotely close to Rice, that is a huge green light.

"Worrying for Leeds fans" – Sky man reacts to Archie Gray update he’s heard

Leeds United could be left concerned about the latest talk surrounding Archie Gray, at least in the opinion of Sky Sports man Paul Robinson.

Sales needed at Elland Road

Daniel Farke's side need to raise around £100m via player sales this summer, according to reports, after missing out on promotion from the Championship.

Though the number was not confirmed by the chairman of the Yorkshire side Paraag Marathe, he did admit "trade-offs" were necessary this summer, name-checking Gray in the process.

"It's a little too early to answer specific questions. I can't talk on specific players right now. If I can paint the big picture for you, there are certain things we need to do and we will make sure we are fully compliant with P&S as we always have been, and there are certain trade-offs that we have to make. We will get to the drawing board and figure out which moves we have to make to make sure we are compliant. It is too early to say, obviously Archie is a tremendous player, as all the players who have put so much effort in for us, but every season brings change. I can't yet comment on it, but we'll see what happens."

Free transfer: Leeds could now move to sign "immense" £35k-p/w PL player

He could prove quite the bargain this summer.

ByBen Browning Jun 6, 2024

Crysencio Summerville is the man everyone expects to leave, while Wilfried Gnonto and Georginio Rutter have also both been strongly linked with moves away from the club in the two weeks since playoff heartbreak.

But there is one man they desperately won't want to lose.

Robinson concerned over Gray's future at Leeds

Now, Sky Sports pundit Paul Robinson, talking to Football Insider, said he is worried about the future of premier talent Gray, who could be one of those sold to help balance the books at Elland Road. Indeed, he suggested that the fact the youngster was named by Marathe could be a bad omen for the summer.

“They won’t be able to keep the squad intact. We know about the financial situation the club is in and the losses they have recorded. We also know about the unpaid transfer fees, which is going to be a problem. FFP and PSR are going to become an issue.

“The fact the chairman has said there are going to have to be tradeoffs and deals done, and he actually namechecked Archie Gray in that statement.

“That will be worrying for Leeds fans, they will hate this, because he’s a player they will be keen to keep hold of. You are looking at the likes of Gray, Gnonto and Summerville potentially leaving."

Gray was an emerging star over the most recent campaign, appearing 44 times in the Championship and starting all three play-off games. Traditionally a midfielder, he has been deployed at right back for the majority of the campaign but could move back to a more central berth in the future, and he is thought to have caught the eye of Arsenal, Liverpool and Bayern Munich among other clubs.

Leeds and their fans may well be desperately hoping that they make enough through sales of other players to keep Gray for at least another season, when his value could increase even further and, more importantly, he could play a key role in their push for promotion once more.

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Saka limped off the field just after half-time in England's shock 2-1 defeat to Greece at Wembley and, not fit enough to be considered for the game against Finland on Saturday, has withdrawn from the squad. His injury sparked immediate concern amongst Arsenal fans but those fears have been calmed by the England interim boss Lee Carsley who claimed his withdrawal is just precautionary.

    WHAT CARSLEY SAID

On Saka's injury, Carsley said: "Bukayo would have been close [to playing against Finland] but it would have been unfair to take a risk with him. He’s a positive person and I expect him to be fine."

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

After an injury to Martin Odegaard for Norway at the last international break ruled the Gunners captain out for a number of months, the Arsenal fans were quick to panic at the sight of yet another one of their star players injured on international duty. But according to the Mirror, England medical staff believe Saka might have been ready for the Finland game but didn't want to take a gamble.

Saka has been superb for the Gunners this season, assisting seven goals in seven games in addition to scoring two of his own, and stepped up in the absence of Odegaard. The Gunners have navigated a tricky period without their captain but will be massively relieved that Saka may well be fit enough to return as early as next weekend against Bournemouth.

    WHAT NEXT FOR SAKA?

The winger is now in a race to be fit enough to return for the Gunners as they travel to take on the Cherries on Saturday evening. The Gunners then face a tricky spell as they take on Shakhtar Donetsk, Liverpool, Preston North End, Newcastle, Inter Milan and Chelsea in the space of three weeks. Mikel Arteta will be hopeful that Saka will be fit enough to start most, if not all, of those fixtures.

New Zealand domestic season to begin on October 19 with Plunket Shield

Men’s and women’s one-day competitions will start in late November

ESPNcricinfo staff07-Oct-2020The New Zealand domestic season will begin on October 19 with the first round of the Plunket Shield followed by men’s and women’s one-day competitions starting in late November.Four rounds of the Plunket Shield will be played until mid-November then the tournament resumes in mid-March with the last round taking place in the first week of April.Other than the New Zealand players involved at the IPL all centrally contracted names are set to be involved in the opening rounds of the Plunket Shield. The Ford Trophy, the men’s one-day competition, will involve six rounds before the T20 Super Smash starts in December and then resume in February with the final on March 5.The women’s Hallyburton Johnstone Shield will also include six rounds before the Super Smash with the final slated for March 28.All the domestic tournaments will follow Covid-19 protocols which have been established around the world including a ban on the use of saliva to shine the ball and the umpires not holding players’ caps and sweaters.”The new rules also allow for the replacement of players displaying symptoms of Covid-19 during a match, with the option for the player to return to the game following a negative result,” NZC head of cricket operations Richard Brewer said.”These measures will be overseen by the match referee and match officials, and have already been successfully piloted in pre-season warm-up fixtures between domestic men’s sides.”After the impact of Covid-19 on the back end of last season, I think we all feel truly grateful to be able to play sport and offer New Zealanders the chance to see so many quality players and matches this summer. The New Zealand international season is due to begin on November 27 with the first of three T20Is against West Indies which will be followed by two Tests. So far, NZC has been granted government approval for tours by West Indies and Pakistan while they have also announced men’s fixtures against Bangladesh and Australia next year which they are confident will be given the green light. There is also set to be a visit by the England women’s team in February with the hope that Australia will be able to join to make a tri-series.

Cameron Green's 185* pushes his Australia credentials

There is a sense of uncertainty in Australian cricket about how soon 21-year-old Cameron Green should be promoted to the national set up – it’s a question of when, not if – but a career-best 185, as he batted throughout the third day against New South Wales, suggested as a batsman he is not far away.Green’s impressive stay, which followed a century from Sam Whiteman, led a strong Western Australia response as they closed within touching distance of the New South Wales total. Unless there is an agreement between the captains on the final day – or the defending champions stumble in a nothing-to-gain third innings – it is difficult to see how there will be a positive result on a docile surface.Green’s technique and composure stood out as he did not lose his patience when kept quiet in the 80s and bombarded by a sustained short-ball attack which occasionally had him in some awkward positions, although the gentle nature of the pitch made it a back-breaking tactic for the quicks. He brought up his fourth first-class hundred from 250 balls when he drove Nathan Lyon through the covers and he was still there at stumps having faced 378 deliveries. He is being held back from bowling in the early stages of the season after a series back problems but even without that part of his game he could be in the selection frame.Whiteman had resumed on 81 and brought up his fifth first-class hundred from 193 balls before the third-wicket stand of 173 was ended when he top edged a pull into the leg side to give Sean Abbott his third scalp early in the afternoon session. Whiteman’s run of Shield scores since the second part of last season reads 53, 4, 51, 110, 65, 18 and 114.It was a day of toil for the New South Wales attack, but Harry Conway was rewarded for a hard-working spell when Ashton Turner edged to gully although there was never a suggestion of a clatter of wickets that would have opened up the game.Ashton Agar settled in alongside Green to further chip away at New South Wales’ advantage until he was trapped lbw by his opposite number Lyon. There had been some concern earlier in the day when Lyon appeared to be feeling some discomfort in his right shoulder after attempting a run out attempt during the first session, but he was able to send down 40 overs and added Aaron Hardie leg before with one that gripped nicely.

Watkins would love him: Villa in daily talks to sign £35m star

Aston Villa are currently circumventing the snapping jaws of the Premier League's profit and sustainability (PSR) rules but are making headway as the transfer of Douglas Luiz to Juventus edges toward completion, bringing in Weston McKennie and Samuel Iling-Junior as part of the package.

Unai Emery has masterminded an incredible rise at Villa Park but has his work cut out this summer, juggling financial sticking points with the need to style his team ahead of a multi-layered forthcoming campaign, where Premier League football will bounce against the desire to impress on Europe's major stage.

With last season's top-four finish rolling out the carpet for a place in the Champions League, Villa will hope to make some purposeful signings, with one already internally in the works.

Aston Villa transfer news

With Villa fighting to align themselves on the right side of the PSR line before the June 30 deadline, deals are unlikely to be completed this month. But expect the Champions League-qualified side to pounce when free to do so.

Emery hopes to strengthen a range of positions, with left-back a priority. As per Football Insider, the Spaniard is hoping to sign Chelsea's Ian Maatsen to solve that problem, with the full-back enjoying an excellent loan spell with Borussia Dortmund in 2024.

Ian Maatsen for Borussia Dortmund

Maatsen, aged 22, has a £35m release clause in his Blues contract that has dissuaded Dortmund from moving for his signature. Villa, too, have reservations about accepting such a figure but are holding daily discussions to determine whether to advance their interest.

Ian Maatsen's 23/24 season in numbers

Maatsen spent the 2022/23 campaign in the Championship with Vincent Kompany's Burnley, enjoying a tremendous breakthrough year as he won the title and was hailed for his "dangerous" qualities by manager Peter van der Veen.

Returning to Chelsea one year ago, Maatsen played a part in Mauricio Pochettino's sole season at the Stamford Bridge helm but featured only 15 times in all competitions, starting just once in the Premier League, before being loaned out in January.

It has been his stint as a Borussia Dortmund loanee that has truly highlighted his quality and suggested that he can flourish in a prominent position at the height of the continental game, for years to come.

As per Sofascore, Maatsen only featured 16 times in the Bundesliga but scored two goals, provided two assists and completed 89% of his passes.

Once praised for his "exceptional" quality by former Coventry City teammate Simon Moore, Maatsen would be a credit to Villa's starting line-up, potentially even benefitting one of the club's best-performing stars.

Why Villa should sign Ian Maatsen

Called up to the Netherlands squad for the ongoing Euro 2024, Maatsen is fast on the rise, with his exploits since leaving Chelsea in January showcasing the value in forging a career path that will see him playing regular football.

As per FBref, the former Yellow Wall loanee ranked among the top 20% of Bundesliga full-backs last season for goals scored, the top 6% for pass completion and passes attempted, the top 10% for progressive passes and the top 14% for progressive carries per 90.

Technically sound and athletic, he would make a marked impact on Aston Villa's fluency and build-up play, potentially even providing a constant outlet for Ollie Watkins.

Ollie Watkins scores for Aston Villa

Watkins, granted, is principally a striker, but he's been found on the wing more than a few times at Villa and with strikers such as Tammy Abraham being coveted for a transfer, Maatsen could indeed be the perfect new teammate.

The Netherlands international's heatmap in the Bundesliga seared through the page, with his 4.9 ball recoveries per game emphasising the impressive ground-covering style.

Maatsen's regular through balls – he ranked among the top 9% in the Bundesliga – and balls into the final third, again, top 9%, suggest that he possesses the enterprise and dynamics to supplement Watkins with the kind of frequency that will see the England international stands a good chance of emulating his remarkable campaign.

Watkins has been a steady shooter for Villa since signing from Brentford in a club-record £33m deal in 2020. But last term, he eclipsed expectations, racking up an extraordinary tally of 27 goals and 13 assists across all competitions.

Ollie Watkins for Aston Villa

To boot, Watkins could actually repay the favour. He ranks among the top 3% of forwards across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for assists per 90. Maatsen loves a goal and could be fed by the Three Lions star's creative style.

With one of Alex Moreno or Lucas Digne departing a strong possibility for the Lions this summer, Maatsen is understandably at the top of the shopping list, offering something different while boasting skills to align with the fundamentals of Emery's system.

In fairness, £35m would be a little steep for the 22-year-old, but given that Maatsen is about to enter the penultimate year of his Stamford Bridge contract, Enzo Maresca and Co may well be convinced to whittle that tag down, should Villa turn internal discussions toward Stamford Bridge.

Rangers could land Roofe replacement who’s "one of the best" SPFL strikers

Glasgow Rangers have been hard at work to improve their playing squad during the summer transfer window after they failed to bring the Scottish Premiership title back to Ibrox last season.

Rangers had to watch on as their closest rivals lifted the trophy for the third season in a row and Philippe Clement will now be plotting ways to return to the top spot in the 2024/25 campaign.

Gers Head of recruitment Nils Koppen has wasted little time in snapping up fresh talent for the Belgian head coach to work with before the Light Blues kick off the season with a trip away from Glasgow to take on Hearts at the start of next month.

Jefte, Oscar Cortes, Liam Kelly, Connor Barron, and Clinton Nsiala have already been brought in to Ibrox and forward Hamza Igamane is reportedly set to be the next to come through the door.

Rangers' pursuit of a new number nine

Igamane can play as a striker but is also a versatile player who can play out wide on either flank or as an attacking midfielder, which means that Clement could use him out wide or behind a starting number nine.

The 21-year-old has never played club football outside of his home country in Morocco and the Gers may want to bring in a striker who could be relied upon to hit the ground running, given that they have huge Champions League qualifiers next month.

According to the Daily Mail, the Gers do have an interest in two more experienced strikers who currently play for teams in the Scottish Premiership.

The report claims that Hearts captain Lawrence Shankland remains an option for the Ibrox giants and that the Scotland international would be open to the move.

Aberdeen striker Bojan Miovski.

It also states that the Light Blues 'like' Aberdeen centre-forward Bojan Miovski but are wary of the rivalry between the two clubs inflating the price of a potential deal.

The Daily Mail adds that a swoop for the North Macedonia international feels 'unlikely' at this moment in time, due to that frayed relationship with the Dons.

If Koppen and Clement can overcome the odds to sign the Rangers transfer target, however, then they could land a dream replacement for Kemar Roofe at the top end of the pitch, after the ex-Leeds forward left the club to become a free agent at the end of May.

Why Rangers need to upgrade on Kemar Roofe

The Scottish giants must swoop to sign a better striker than the Jamaica international this summer as he did not provide enough competition for Cyriel Dessers last season.

Finishing was a major issue for the Gers during the 2023/24 campaign in the Premiership as the team scored just 85 goals from 99.4 xG in total.

Rangers striker Kemar Roofe.

No player underperformed their xG by more than Dessers as the Nigeria international scored 16 goals from 21.59 xG – an underperformance of 5.59.

Danilo missed 41 matches through injury during the season and that left Roofe as the only senior striker in the squad to compete with the misfiring marksman.

Rangers needed him to provide a suitable alternative to Dessers when the former Cremonese forward was struggling badly in front of goal but he failed to be what they needed.

Unfortunately, as you can see in the table above, the 31-year-old dud struggled badly with the opportunities that Clement and ex-boss Michael Beale afforded him.

Roofe ended the campaign with one goal from 1.48 xG and two goals in 24 appearances in all competitions for the Gers, which came after he had managed two goals in six outings during the 2022/23 season.

Alongside his struggles in front of goal in his last two years at the club, the experienced frontman was also a big liability when it came to availability.

He was absent for 12 or more matches in each of his four seasons at Ibrox and missed a staggering 35 games apiece in the 2021/22 and 2022/23 campaigns.

This all shows that Rangers need a better option than him to compete with Dessers and that is why Miovski would be a dream replacement for Roofe if they can bring him in before the end of the summer transfer window.

What Bojan Miovski would bring to Rangers

Firstly, the 25-year-old attacker is a proven Premiership performer who could be relied upon to come in and hit the ground running ahead of their league opener against Hearts, and Champions League qualifiers, next month.

He was named in the PFA Scotland Team of the Year, alongside fellow Gers target Shankland, whilst no Rangers attacker made it into the XI.

Bojan Miovski for North Macedonia.

This shows that his peers voted him as one of the best players in the SPFL during the 2023/24 campaign and Livingston boss David Martindale backed that up with his comments during the season.

The Livi coach hailed him as "one of the best STs in the league" who would "walk" into any team in the Premiership back in December, which speaks to how impressive he was in front of goal last term.

Miovski has proven himself to be a lethal force in the Scottish top-flight over the course of his two seasons in the country with Aberdeen, which suggests that the left-footed star has the quality to be an instant success at Ibrox.

As you can see in the table above, the Light Blues target has racked up 32 league goals for the club and missed 31 'big chances' in total in his first two years in Scotland.

Whereas, Dessers missed a staggering 27 'big chances' for Rangers in just one season last term, which highlights the difference between the pair when it comes to finishing high-quality opportunities.

Rangers already have "dream" Lawrence replacement in forgotten star

Therefore, Miovski could be a dream replacement for Roofe this summer as his statistics suggest that he could come in and provide Dessers with far more competition for his place next term.
