Postecoglou impressed by Tottenham youngster who's set for more game time

Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou is planning to hand a Spurs youngster more game time after being impressed by him, with the Lilywhites gem also highly thought of behind-the-scenes at Hotspur Way.

Ange Postecoglou under pressure at Tottenham

Throughout what has been a dismal 2024/2025 campaign, Postecoglou has faced mounting pressure at various points, despite injuries ravaging his squad for large chunks of the season.

Daniel Levy has reportedly got candidates in mind for if he does opt to part ways with Postecoglou at the end of this Premier League campaign, with Tottenham’s list of managerial targets including Bournemouth’s Andoni Iraola, ex-Borussia Dortmund boss Edin Terzić, Brentford boss Thomas Frank and even Inter Milan head coach Simone Inzaghi, according to reports.

Their Europa League campaign could be crucial in determining Postecoglou’s long-term future, but they haven’t exactly got off to the best start of their last 16 tie with AZ Alkmaar, tasting a 1-0 defeat in their first leg of their tie on Thursday night.

TalkSPORT pundit Simon Jordan, speaking on air earlier this week, said he’d be surprised if the 59-year-old is still manager next season.

“The fact is they still spend a hundred-odd million plus on transfer fees most seasons and most managers with a few exceptions would bite your arm off for a job like that,” said Jordan (via Football Insider).

“So they’ll find a replacement for Ange Postecoglou. Whether it’s the right one, whether it gets you in the right direction and whether Daniel Levy will continue to make appointment without winning anything, who knows.

“But I would be surprised if you finish 13th in the league, you get knocked out of the cup competitions – besides the credible performance in the League Cup – if he’s still in a job.”

Despite some uncertainty surrounding his long-term position, Postecoglou is believed to be planning for next season behind-the-scenes, and he has already mapped out a more significant squad role for young forward Dane Scarlett.

The 20-year-old was recalled by Spurs from a loan spell at Oxford United, to help Postecoglou cope during the height of their injury crisis, and he has since managed to impress over cameos in Europe.

Scarlett bagged a goal and an assist against Elfsborg during their 3-0 win in late January, with the England Under-21 international also notching an assist against Ipswich Town in the Premier League recently.

Ange Postecoglou planning "bigger role" for Dane Scarlett

According to GiveMeSport, the attacker has done enough to convince Postecoglou that he’s deserving of more chances for next campaign.

It is believed that Postecoglou is planning a “bigger role” for Scarlett at Tottenham for the 2025/2026 season, after being left impressed by the Spurs starlet, with N17 officials also thinking highly of the academy graduate.

Scarlett originally burst on to the scene under José Mourinho, who even likened Scarlett to Marcus Rashford, but it’s taken a while for him to start establishing himself in the first-team since those comments. Now, it appears he could finally be given the opportunity to live up to that tag.

Emery could now unleash Aston Villa’s own Salah in "unbelievable" star

Aston Villa head into tonight’s Premier League fixture with Liverpool desperate to get back to winning ways in front of their adoring Villa Park faithful.

Last time out, Unai Emery’s men picked up a flat point versus relegation-threatened Ipswich Town on their own patch, with the result made to look even more bleak by the fact the Tractor Boys managed to pick up that point despite only having ten men for all of the second 45 minutes.

Even with Liverpool currently showing some chinks in their armour with a Merseyside Derby draw and a slim win over Wolverhampton Wanderers, Villa will know they’ll need to be at their best to exploit the Reds’ rustiness, especially if Mohamed Salah is at his frightening peak.

Salah's unbelievable form this season

Indeed, even with the Egyptian ace hitting 32 years of age and worrying about his long-term Anfield future, the tricky attacker is having the campaign of his life.

Staggeringly, Salah boasts a whopping 28 goals and 19 assists in all competitions this season so far, with a large portion of those goal contributions – 37 to be exact – coming in the bread and butter of the top flight.

Scoring and assisting in some capacity across his high-flying side’s last five matches too, Villa will know they will have to keep the enigmatic Salah quiet all night long to try and pick up a result and sour Arne Slot’s mood even more.

Emery might well even have his own Salah up his sleeve for this Wednesday night affair, with the star in question equally comfortable playing on the right wing but when putting his golden left foot to good use.

Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah

Aston Villa could unleash their answer to Salah

Villa certainly were the talk of the town after an explosive end to the hectic transfer window saw them welcome in Axel Disasi, Marcus Rashford and Marco Asensio all on loan deals.

Whilst Disasi is likely to start again in the centre-back areas, there is a shout that Asensio could be handed a start down the right wing to spring a surprise on Slot and Co, who might well be anticipating Rashford jumping into the XI after he clattered the crossbar against Ipswich.

Instead, the “unbelievable” Spaniard – as he has been labelled in the past by football talent scout Antonio Mango – might be given the nod to try and cause havoc to a Liverpool defence that gave up 16 shots to Wolves, with a fierce strike like this one in the ex-Real Madrid man’s wheelhouse.

After all, when donning the famous Los Blancos strip, Asensio would help himself to a stunning 61 goals and 32 assists from 286 games, further reinforcing the notion of the 29-year-old being a star for the big occasion and why he should start against the table-toppers late on.

Aston Villa's MarcoAsensioin action with Ipswich Town's Luke Woolfenden

His debut in claret and blue also saw a confident Asensio take to the pressures of the English game well, with many a trick and flick well executed, alongside walking away from the FA Cup win versus Spurs with a 100% pass accuracy in-tact.

A real threat off the right flank, like Salah, the comparison between the pair – as well as Rashford – has only recently been made by Emery himself:

Asensio could also link up well with the main Villa marksman Ollie Watkins who managed to push his side to a draw against the Tractor Boys with an equalising strike, alongside the fact the former Brentford sharpshooter has five career goals versus the Reds.

Aston Villa's Ollie Watkins celebrates scoring their first goal withLeonBailey

Emery will want to see a reaction from his underwhelming troops and there wouldn’t be a better way to respond than beating the league leaders in front of a packed Villa Park, courtesy of some Asensio magic.

Aston Villa hit gold on “world class” star worth more than Felix & Rashford

Aston Villa already have a top star in their ranks away from their notable spending.

Alex Davies century builds slender lead for Warwickshire

Warwickshire 307 for 5 (Davies 118, Hain 83*) lead Somerset 269 for 8 (Gregory 65*, Barnard 3-54) by 23 runsAlex Davies hit his seventh first-class century as Warwickshire built a narrow first-innings lead over Somerset on the third day of the rain-affected LV= County Championship game at TauntonAfter dismissing their hosts for 284 from an overnight 269 for eight, the visitors had replied with 307 for five when bad light ended play nine overs early, opener Davies leading the way with 118, off 153 balls, with 21 fours and a six.Sam Hain contributed an undefeated 83, Will Rhodes 39 and Michael Burgess 36 not out, while Jack Leach was the most successful Somerset bowler with three for 93.The day began with Somerset’s Lewis Gregory and Leach looking to guide their side towards a second batting point. Those hopes faded when Gregory pushed forward to Chris Rushworth in the second over of the morning and departed without adding to his overnight score of 65 as Rob Yates pouched his fourth catch of the match at first slip.Oliver Hannon-Dalby wrapped up the innings by pinning Peter Siddle lbw for ten and Leach was left unbeaten on 27.Warwickshire’s reply got off to a poor start when Yates edged the third ball, bowled by Josh Davey, to Tom Lammonby at fourth slip and fell for two.But Somerset’s seamers were soon struggling to find as much assistance from the pitch as their Warwickshire counterparts, Davies and Will Rhodes batting with increasing confidence.Rhodes was the more aggressive and had moved to 39 off 52 balls, with 6 fours, when aiming an aggressive shot off Leach and picking out Craig Overton at wide mid-on.Undeterred, Davies slog-swept Leach for six on his way to a 63-ball half-century, also featuring 6 fours. He was unbeaten on 51 at lunch with the scoreboard reading 108 for two from 23 overs. The afternoon session saw Davies and Hain progressing serenely against an impotent looking Somerset attack on a pitch that appeared to offer little seam movement.Skipper Lewis Gregory had turned to Leach as early as the 15th over, but the England left-arm spinner found it hard to stem the run-rate as Davies and Hain batted positively.Davies moved to a chanceless ton with a single off Leach, having looked untroubled in facing 140 balls and extending his boundary count to 17 fours and a six.He and the equally comfortable Hain had taken their third-wicket stand to 133 in 34.1 overs when it was broken by Leach.Davies looked to increase the tempo with a reverse sweep and only succeeded in dragging the ball onto his stumps. It was 203 for three and the error was compounded with only a couple of runs added as Dan Mousley fell lbw to Leach for two.Hain had been content to play second fiddle to Davies, but when Craig Overton was introduced for a new spell from the Marcus Trescothick Pavilion End, he produced a classic cover drive to register his fifth boundary.Ed Barnard helped Hain add 31, contributing 19 on his Warwickshire debut before being bowled by Siddle playing inside the line. All the while Hain was staying rock-like, reaching his fifty with his sixth boundary, a sweetly-timed back-foot shot through the covers off Gregory, He had faced 140 balls, the same number as Davies required to reach three figures.Burgess secured a first batting point for Warwickshire with a flashing cut for four off Gregory, taking the total to 253 for five.Burgess then edged Leach between wicketkeeper James Rew and first slip at catchable height, taking advantage of the narrow escape by lofting the next delivery for four as Warwickshire closed in on Somerset’s first innings total. They were three runs ahead by the time the second new ball was taken. It had little effect and the game looked to be meandering towards a draw following the first day washout when, with the floodlights on at the Cooper Associates County Ground, the umpires took the players off at 6.35pm.

Tottenham plan to sell Bissouma to fund bid for £66m "generational talent"

Tottenham Hotspur are now planning to sell Yves Bissouma in the summer, in order to fund a move for a “generational talent” who could cost around £66m, according to reports.

Tottenham keen on a midfielder

Spurs are keen on upgrading their midfield in the summer amid a disappointing season for Bissouma, and Lamine Camara has now emerged as a potential target, with scouts recently being sent to watch the AS Monaco man in action.

Camara is not the only player Spurs have in mind, however, with a £25m bid said to be on the table for Inter Milan midfielder Davide Frattesi, who is now ready to leave the Italian club at the end of the season.

Given Frattesi’s willingness to leave Inter, the Lilywhites could have a better chance of getting a deal done this summer, having also expressed interest in the past, and they are also well-placed to sign Real Betis’ Johnny Cardoso, who has a £21m release clause in his contract.

Tottenham to offer £40m for star who has fallen out with his current boss

It would certainly be a major coup.

ByBarney Lane Mar 3, 2025

Adam Wharton, on the other hand, is more likely to command a much higher fee, with recent reports suggesting the Crystal Palace man could cost around £66m in the summer, amid interest from Manchester United.

As such, Tottenham may need to sell before they can buy, and a report from The Boy Hotspur has revealed they are now planning to cash-in on Bissouma to fund a move for Wharton.

Doncaster Rovers' Luke Molyneux in action with Crystal Palace's AdamWharton

There is no shortage of interest in the Mali international, with Aston Villa, Crystal Palace and Everton named as potential suitors, while unnamed clubs from France could be willing to make bids as high as €30m (£25m).

The midfielder is set to enter the final year of his contract in the summer, meaning it could be the ideal time for Spurs to cash in, and there are plenty of signs the Crystal Palace star would be a fantastic replacement.

Wharton could be a "generational talent"

The 21-year-old has been lauded as a “generational talent” by members of the media, having impressed enough during his debut season with Palace to be called up for England’s Euro 2024 squad by Gareth Southgate.

Since then, the Englishman has struggled with injuries, but he has remained an important player for the Eagles when fit, most recently displaying his defensive acumen by winning six of the eight duels he contested in a 4-1 win against Aston Villa.

The youngster flourishes defensively in particular, ranking in the 92nd percentile for tackles per 90, and the 81st percentile for interceptions over the past year, when compared to his positional peers, although he also regularly chips in with assists.

Bissouma has fallen out of favour in recent times, appearing for a total of just 17 minutes across the last three Premier League games, so it is little wonder Postecoglou wants to cash in this summer, and Wharton has proven he could be a suitable long-term replacement.

WPL auction during T20 World Cup a 'distraction' but 'enormous step for women's cricket'

Sophie Devine, Harmanpreet Kaur, Meg Lanning and Heather Knight on how the players plan to deal with this “awkward” situation

Firdose Moonda04-Feb-2023The world’s elite female cricketers will have to find a way to manage their expectations and emotions when the Women’s T20 World Cup collides with the Women’s Premier League auction on February 13. About 45 players (including the entire Indian squad) competing in the ICC tournament, which starts on Friday, could be picked in the WPL. Up to seven overseas players, of which one must be from an Associate nation, can be picked per team and all of them could enjoy the biggest payday of their careers. Understandably, there will be some distraction.”It’s the elephant in the room,” Sophie Devine, the New Zealand captain, said at the T20 World Cup captains’ pressers. “It’s a really unique experience. It’s enormous. You talk about glass ceilings and I think the WPL is going to be the next stage. I am really excited about it. As female cricketers, this is something we have never been through before. On every scale, it’s going to be awkward. That’s the word we have spoken about.”The difficulties could come from the amount of money on offer, which has not been seen in the women’s game before. The WPL teams will have a purse of INR 12 crore (US $1.46 million approx.) – which is around eight times smaller than the last men’s IPL purse of INR 95 crore (US $11.5 million approx.) – but promises to hand some players a substantial financial boost. Conversely, it will also let others down.Related

“Some people are going to get picked up; some people won’t,” Devine said. “And you are going to get a value attached to what you are worth which, as human beings, is not the nicest [thing], to be perfectly honest. But it’s also a job and it’s what we’ve put our names in for.”Devine called it an “enormous step for women’s cricket”, but admitted that one would be “naive to think that it’s not going to be a distraction”. New Zealand would have played their tournament opener two days before the auction and will be gearing up for their second match on the auction day. How the players deal with that, Devine said, is “going to be up to each individual”.Australia, who are New Zealand’s opponents on February 11, are not in action on the auction day and are looking forward to following the event while also hoping to avoid being overly attached to any outcomes.”Personally, I’m really excited about it and I know the girls are as well,” Meg Lanning, the Australia captain, said. “We are focusing on what we are trying to do here, which is the most important thing. There’s no right or wrong way to go about it. Everyone will deal with it as they wish.”We’ve spoken as a team about letting people deal with it how they feel is best because, as Sophie said, it’s a little bit awkward and it’s just trying to embrace that and understand that it’s actually a really exciting time and you don’t have a lot of control over it. We’ve just got to wait and see.”

“I think in the women’s game you can have a really nice dynamic between the franchise leagues and international cricket… I am hugely excited for the future of the game and the opportunities that are developing not just for players”England captain Heather Knight

All eyes will, of course, be on the Indian players who will play Pakistan on the eve of the auction, which remains their immediate concern. “Before that [the auction], we have a very important game and we are just going to focus on that,” India captain Harmanpreet Kaur said. But she could not avoid mentioning the magnitude of the auction, for Indian players in particular. “It’s a really big day for all of us because we have been waiting for years and years now. The next two or three months are very important for women’s cricket. We have seen how the WBBL and the Hundred have helped their countries improve their cricket. Hopefully, the same will happen for our country.”Harmanpreet, who has played in the Kia Super League, WBBL and Hundred, said she was looking forward to seeing young Indian talent share the dressing room with overseas stars.”That is something which has a very different feeling. When I got that opportunity, it was the biggest life-changing moment. Other girls will also experience this. It will be a great opportunity to improve cricket and grow the game.”Before any of that happens, India want to double up on their trophy count after their Under-19 women’s team won the inaugural age-group World Cup last week. “The World Cup is more important than anything else,” Harmanpreet said. “Our focus is on the ICC trophy. These things will keep coming, and as a player, you know what’s important for you and how you need to keep your focus. We are all mature enough and know what is important for us.”Harmanpreet Kaur: “When I got that opportunity [to share the dressing room with overseas players, it was the biggest life-changing moment”•Getty ImagesInternational cricket could retain pride of place in the women’s game, according to England’s skipper Heather Knight, who has recently completed a masters degree in leadership in sport. Knight’s dissertation focused on the rise of franchise cricket and though she hasn’t “got my grade yet so I don’t know if it’s going to be any good so I could be talking rubbish”, she hopes that the women’s game can find a “nice dynamic between the franchise leagues and international cricket”.Knight pointed to the men’s game, where clashes between franchise and international duty are becoming more common, and said that while she supports the growth of leagues she hopes the women’s game can find a “sweet spot” to balance them with bilateral series.”Franchise cricket and these tournaments are a really good thing but what’s the dynamic to make international cricket and domestic cricket thrive? That’s the sweet spot,” she said. “You’ve seen in the men’s game, [franchises] started to take over a little bit. I think in the women’s game you can have a really nice dynamic between the franchise leagues and international cricket. International cricket needs a bit of help to be able to do that but it’s a hugely exciting time. I am hugely excited for the future of the game and the opportunities that are developing not just for players. You see Rachael Haynes has been picked as a coach and I think a lot of where the game has got to, and those past players and how they’ve contributed to where the game is at.”Like Devine, Lanning and Harmanpreet, Knight also couldn’t hide her enthusiasm for the WPL and believed it would change the landscape of the women’s game. “It’s an exciting time in women’s cricket and things are changing very fast,” she said. “There are lots of franchise competitions popping up. and it’s going to create a really interesting dynamic. I think it’s absolutely brilliant for the game. The women’s IPL is going to be a complete game-changer. The money that’s going to come in and the perceptions of the women’s game around the world as well – other boards will look at it and think they’ve got to catch up here.”I really hope this accelerates the shift in a lot of different countries.”

Everton battling to sign "quick" 18-goal star who starred v Bayern Munich

Joining the race to welcome a new target, Everton are now reportedly battling to sign an attacking star who recently stole the show against European giants Bayern Munich.

Everton transfer news

The Friedkin era is well and truly underway. David Moyes is back and setting his focus on moving Everton beyond battles to survive and back towards the Premier League’s top half, whilst their new Bramley-Moore Dock stadium is on the horizon and has already hosted a test match against Wigan Athletic’s academy side.

Now, when the summer arrives, it’s up to the new owners to match the ambition of a new stadium and that of Moyes by welcoming some key reinforcements at the beginning of a new era.

Of course, the Toffees have already welcomed one reinforcement under Friedkin on that front in the form of Carlos Alcaraz, who has got off to the perfect start in an Everton shirt. Opening his account with the winning goal against Crystal Palace last time out, the Flamengo loanee is doing everything right to turn his move permanent.

Everton's Carlos Alcaraz celebrates scoring their second goal with Everton'sJackHarrison

He’s not the only talented attacker who could feature in Moyes’ frontline next season, however. According to The Boot Room, Everton are now battling to sign Nicolas Kuhn from Celtic alongside Leeds United and Crystal Palace this summer.

The Celtic star has enjoyed an excellent season and stole the show against Bayern Munich, scoring to put his side back on level terms on aggregate only for Alphonso Davies to break their hearts in the dying embers and seal victory for the German giants.

Alas, the result shouldn’t take away from the winger’s impressive performance, which should have only increased the interest of Premier League clubs such as Everton ahead of the summer transfer window.

"Quick" Kuhn would be an instant upgrade

Whilst there’s no doubt that Moyes has got Everton finally firing on all cylinders going forward following a fairly blunt spell under Sean Dyche, he could still do with the star power that Kuhn would provide. On the biggest stage, the winger silenced Bayern Munich with Celtic’s equaliser in midweek in a moment that he could replicate in Merseyside next season.

Earning the praise of Brendan Rodgers in what has been a superb season, the Celtic boss told reporters when asked about his 18-goal winger earlier in the campaign: “I just think it’s time, isn’t it? I think we all expect people to adapt straight away, you’d love them to, whether they’re managers, coaches, or supporters.

“You want them to be ready immediately, but he came into the club during a challenging period in January. He had issues around his fitness and health, and everything else.

“He just landed in the middle of that difficult time, and it took him a little while. But he’s had a really good pre-season. He’s always been quick, one of the quickest players you’ll see, but I think now there’s more variety in his game, coming inside and out.”

AFPMANAGER OF THE SEASON NOMINATIONS

In the managerial category, Wolves boss Vitor Pereira has emerged as a surprise nominee. Pereira took the reins in December with the club languishing in 19th place. Since then, he has masterminded a dramatic turnaround, collecting 10 wins and two draws in just 18 games to secure the club’s top-flight status. Wolves now sit comfortably in 14th place.

Liverpool’s Arne Slot, having steered his team to the title in his debut Premier League season, is a clear frontrunner for the award. Eddie Howe of Newcastle and Forest boss Nuno Espirito Santo also make the shortlist, with both clubs still in the race for Champions League qualification as the season nears its end. Thomas Frank of Brentford is the final name on the list, having guided the Bees to what looks set to be their best-ever league finish of eighth.
