Bad news for Lewis: Man City hold concrete interest in £40m "cheat code"

Manchester City are back in action after the international break this weekend as they prepare to travel to Bournemouth in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup.

This competition is the club’s last realistic chance to win a piece of silverware before the end of the 2025/26 campaign, as they are 22 points behind Liverpool in the Premier League with nine matches left to play.

Their lack of success on the pitch led to a splurge in the January transfer window, as the likes of Omar Marmoush, Nico Gonzalez, and Abdukodir Khusanov came in to bolster the squad.

Marmoush, who scored a hat-trick against Newcastle United in the Premier League, has been the star of those mid-season additions so far with his quality at the top end of the pitch.

That may not be the end of the club’s spending, though, as the summer transfer window could see more players arrive at The Etihad to bolster Pep Guardiola’s side ahead of next season.

This could mean that players who are currently playing in the first-team at Manchester City may have to look over their shoulders, as they could be replaced this summer, and Rico Lewis may fall into that category.

Why Rico Lewis may not be a regular next season

Long-serving right-back Kyle Walker, who started 30 Premier League games last term, only started nine league matches in the first half of this season before being loaned out to AC Milan in the January transfer window.

The 34-year-old veteran’s decline and eventual exit from The Etihad provided Lewis with a huge opportunity to make that position his own, and to become a regular starter for years to come – as Phil Foden has done as another graduate of the City academy.

Manchester City defender Rico Lewis.

Unfortunately, however, the England U21 international’s performances for the Cityzens so far this season have been less-than-impressive in the Premier League, and it remains to be seen whether or not he will reach the level that City need from him at right-back.

One of the issues he has had is that he does not excel in any particular area of the game. Lewis is technically secure and decent on the ball, but does not offer exceptional creativity or a goalscoring threat, and his defensive work is not noteworthy either.

As you can see in the table above, the City academy graduate has rarely provided a threat at the top end of the pitch, whilst he has been average at best in defensive situations – ranking seventh for tackles (1.2) and ninth for interceptions (0.5) per game in the squad.

Manchester City could, now, make a signing that would send Lewis packing, either out of the starting XI or out of the club, as they are eyeing up a deal for a Bundesliga star.

The latest on Man City's interest in Bundesliga star

According to TEAMtalk, Manchester City are one of a number of clubs interested in a deal to sign Dutch right-back Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen in the upcoming summer transfer window.

The report claims that the Cityzens have a ‘concrete’ interest in the Netherlands international, who they sold to Celtic in the summer of 2019 for a reported fee of £350k.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

TEAMtalk adds that City are now ‘plotting’ a move to bring Frimpong back to The Etihad for a second spell at the club, although he did not play a single match for the first-team after coming through the academy set-up before his move to Glasgow.

The outlet also reveals that Manchester United and Liverpool are also keen on the Dutch full-back, which could mean that there will be plenty of competition for his signature this summer.

Bayer Leverkusen's Jeremie Frimpong

TEAMtalks report claims that a fee of £40m would be enough to tempt Leverkusen to cash in on the right-footed whiz, and adds that City view him as their long-term replacement for Walker – which does not bode well for Lewis’ future in that position.

Why Manchester City should sign Jeremie Frimpong

Frimpong, who is four years older than Lewis, would come in at the age of 24 with his best years still ahead of him, which could make him the long-term option in that area of the pitch.

At 24, the Netherlands international has already built a wealth of experience, with 51 appearances for Celtic and 182 for Leverkusen, whilst still having plenty of years left to develop and improve, making him the perfect age for City to sign him.

Jeremie Frimpong for Bayer Leverkusen

The £40m-rated star’s form for Leverkusen in recent seasons also suggests that he has the quality to be an excellent addition to the squad, and one that could send Lewis packing because he could offer far more than the English defender.

Whilst the current Manchester City man has failed to provide a consistent threat at the top end of the pitch in the Premier League, Frimpong has been a constant threat for his club – scoring 29 goals and providing 40 assists for the German side to date.

As you can see in the table above, the Dutch sensation has provided far more quality in the final third in comparison to Lewis in the past two league campaigns, scoring ten more goals and registering ten more assists, to go along with a staggering 51 more key passes.

Frimpong, who was described as a “cheat code” by U23 scout Antonio Mango, could come in to improve Manchester City’s attacking output down that flank, with his ability to score and create goals at an exceptional rate.

City swooping to sign the Leverkusen star, who is reportedly viewed as the long-term replacement for Walker, could force Lewis to consider his future at The Etihad, as it would mean that his natural position has been filled for the foreseeable future.

This could, therefore, send the 20-year-old prospect packing, whether that is a permanent or temporary exit from the club, unless he is able to drastically improve his performances to overtake Frimpong next season, should the Cityzens sign the full-back.

Left for £0: Leeds may rue losing "monster" who's playing like Van Dijk

If – and it remains an if – Leeds United do secure a return to the Premier League at the second attempt, the onus will be on getting recruitment right in order to try and bridge the gap between themselves and the top flight.

The issue is, that gap has become something of a gulf in recent times, with the three promoted sides looking all but certain to secure a swift return back into the Championship. Leeds’ playoff final opponents, Southampton, are currently on course to end the campaign with the lowest Premier League points tally ever.

That illustrates the task ahead should Daniel Farke’s men be successful in their promotion push, with the aim to enjoy a far more fruitful stay in the top tier, after lasting just three seasons in the division following their return in 2020.

There will be a desire to improve upon the at times reckless recruitment that Victor Orta and co oversaw in the top-flight, with far too many high-profile arrivals having failed to work out.

Leeds' 2020 transfer mistakes under Orta

With regard to the summer of 2020 – and a window that would proceed a remarkable ninth-placed finish for Marcelo Bielsa’s side – the Whites did strike gold with the £17m signing of Raphinha, having ultimately sold the Brazilian for £55m just two years later.

Raphinha-Leeds-Stats

That said, that first window back in the Premier League did see some costly moves made, with Orta forking out a then-club-record £26m fee for Rodrigo, only for the Spaniard – who did net 27 league goals – to go on to leave for just £3m in 2023.

Elsewhere, a further £18m was spent on Diego Llorente, albeit with the injury-hit Spaniard making just 59 appearances over the next three seasons, prior to departing permanently for Real Betis for just £2.5m last summer.

That 2020 window also saw current number one, Illan Meslier, acquired on a permanent basis from Lorient, albeit with the young Frenchman still a polarising figure at Elland Road, having notably made two errors leading to a goal in the Championship this season, as per Sofascore.

One notable error was also the £16m permanent capture of loanee Helder Costa, following his role in the promotion push, with the one-time Wolverhampton Wanderers man leaving by mutual consent in October 2023, after making just 23 top-flight appearances for the club.

Where Are They Now

Costa is not alone in also representing an expensive mistake at Orta’s hand, with Robin Koch – who has now rediscovered his form elsewhere – also leaving for nothing…

The Leeds flop who's now performing like Van Dijk

As evidenced above, many of those who were brought in during that 2020 window hardly proved long-term, influential signings, although, in the case of Koch, the German did at least play regularly during his three-year stint at the club.

Signed from Freiburg for an initial fee of £11.5m, the now 28-year-old made 73 appearances in the Premier League for the Yorkshire giants, having notably started 36 games in that doomed 2022/23 campaign.

That consistent run in the side only yielded five clean sheets as Leeds toiled under a string of managers, with the defensive unit shipping a staggering 78 goals in the league alone that season.

Robin Koch

Unsurprisingly, Koch was the subject of his fair share of criticism, with LeedsLive’s Beren Cross describing him as “horrible to watch”, while pundit Gabby Agbonlahor included him among a group of players who he deemed “not good enough” for the club.

Those woes resulted in a loan exit to Eintracht Frankfurt in the summer of 2023, before the versatile defender – who can operate in midfield – returned to Germany permanently last summer upon the expiration of his Leeds contract.

Leeds defender Robin Koch.

To Koch’s credit, he appears to have found a new lease of life for the Europa League outfit, with that rise shown by his soaring market value which stands at around £15m, according to Transfermarkt.

Indeed, as per FBref, the second-most stylistically similar player to the 6 foot 4 star in Europe’s top five leagues is Virgil van Dijk, with the pair particularly alike with regard to their aerial prowess. Indeed, both Koch and Van Dijk – as indicated below – are also adept in possession and when posing a threat in the opposition penalty area.

Previously described as having the quality to become a “monster of a centre-back” by ex-Freiburg teammate, Vincenzo Grifo, the Leeds flop has made 31 appearances in all competitions this season, having also forced his way back into Julian Nagelsmann’s plans at international level.

While Farke and co do boast the likes of Pascal Struijk, Joe Rodon and Ethan Ampadu in their centre-back ranks these days, there may be a sense of frustration at having let Koch depart, particularly considering the German giant moved on for nothing.

Earns as much as Amad: Man Utd must axe flop who's cost over £40m

Manchester United forward Amad Diallo has been out of action since February with an ankle injury and is expected to miss the rest of the season.

The Ivorian starlet had been one of the standout performers for Ruben Amorim’s side in the Premier League before the season-ending injury blow, with nine goals and seven assists in all competitions from a wide position.

United will be hoping that he can return from injury to carry that form into the 2025/26 campaign and beyond, as he could be a future star for the club.

Where Amad Diallo ranks in Man Utd's top earners

Despite his impressive form for the Red Devils this season, Amad is not among the top few earners within the squad with his weekly wage of £120k.

As you can see in the table below, the left-footed wizard only just cracks the top ten list, below the likes of Christian Eriksen and Mason Mount, who have either been bit-part players or unavailable for most of the season.

His current deal is due to run out at the end of June and Amorim should cut him from the group, because he has already drained the club of millions in wages throughout his career so far.

As you can see in the table above, Lindelof has already earned over £40m in wages during his time at Old Trafford to date, and will have earned a reported £46.64m in wages by the end of his contract this year.

That is a sum of £77.64m in total, including his transfer fee, and the 30-year-old has only played 30 or more league matches in two of his eight seasons in Manchester.

He has only started two of his eight appearances in the Premier League this season and has been an unused substitute 11 times across all competitions, which shows that the experienced defender is a bit-part player at best under Amorim.

Compare that to Amad Diallo’s importance to the team, with his aforementioned goals and assists, on the same weekly wage and that shows why United must finally part ways with the Sweden international this summer.

Same agent as Trafford: Newcastle now battling to sign "phenomenal" striker

As rumours continue to come thick and fast regarding Alexander Isak’s potential suitors, Newcastle United have reportedly joined the race to sign a 10-goal Premier League star.

Newcastle set sights on possible Isak replacements

The interest in Isak should come as no surprise. The Swede has been among the Premier League’s best forwards once again this season, scoring 22 goals in all competitions. But whilst his form hasn’t slowed down, Newcastle have.

The Magpies have so far been unable to match their Champions League ambitions and are set to miss out for a second consecutive season as things stand, doing them no favours in pursuit of keeping hold of their star man.

Newcastle could now sign £40m+ star who has just fallen out with teammates

It’s been a nightmare time for the forward…

By
Tom Cunningham

Mar 13, 2025

With or without those in Tyneside, Isak deserves to be playing among Europe’s best and that could hand Newcastle an instant problem if the likes of Liverpool come calling this summer. It is at least a potential exit that PIF seem to be preparing for, however, amid recent links to the likes of Hugo Ekitike, who could finally complete a move to St James’ Park following the Magpies’ long-standing interest.

If it’s not to be the Eintracht Frankfurt forward, meanwhile, then it may well be a candidate slightly closer to home that replaces Isak. According to The Boot Room, Newcastle are now plotting a summer move to sign Liam Delap from Ipswich Town following the forward’s excellent debut campaign for The Tractor Boys.

What should instantly make negotiations easier is the fact that Delap is under the same agency as James Trafford, who has reportedly already agreed personal terms with Newcastle ahead of a potential summer switch.

Having already successfully negotiated one deal between them, Newcastle and Trafford’s representatives could be set for further talks regarding another client in the form of Delap. The 22-year-old is certainly one to watch, especially if Newcastle are forced to find a replacement for Isak this summer.

"Phenomenal" Delap is a rising star

Joining a growing list of former Manchester City academy stars to find success elsewhere, Delap looks destined to make his way back to the top of English football, which could yet feature a move to St James’ Park this summer. Even as Ipswich have struggled, he has been at the centre of praise from the likes of football talent scout Jacek Kulig, who dubbed him “phenomenal”.

With 10 goals to his name in the Premier League this season, Delap looks unlikely to let Ipswich drop down to the Championship without putting up a fight. The forward has certainly done his job and now has 10 games left to drag The Tractor Boys to safety against the odds.

Meanwhile, as relegation looms for Kieran McKenna’s side, Newcastle are seemingly among those waiting to pounce and ensure that Delap maintains his own place in England’s top flight.

Paul Walter leads Essex charge to victory at Cardiff

A career-best 78 from Paul Walter set up a 51-run victory as Essex set an impressive 226 for 9 in their Vitality Blast match against Glamorgan in Cardiff. The total was the second-highest ever made at Sophia Gardens with only the Surrey total made here on Wednesday above the Essex effort in this match.Essex lost wickets regularly but kept on coming at the Glamorgan bowlers. The innings had just one stand of more than 50 runs but there were important contributions throughout.Glamorgan started well in their chase but fell away as they looked to keep up with the rate. Colin Ingram top scored with 48 but no Glamorgan batter made a half-century as they were bowled out for 175 with Peter Hatzoglou unable to bat. This is Glamorgan’s second home defeat in a row to leave them with a record of four wins and three losses. Essex now go ahead of Glamorgan in the table with five wins and two defeats.Essex got off to a flying start having won the toss and elected to bat. After the first five overs they had reached 67 for 1 with Timm van der Gugten’s return from injury greeted by the Essex batters smashing him around the park. Van der Gugten’s first two overs went for 38 runs as Robin Das, Feroze Khushi and Michael Pepper all took the attack to Glamorgan. It looked as if Essex could have a truly remarkable score at the end of their six over Powerplay, but the last over of the fielding restrictions from Ruaidhri Smith was a double-wicket maiden. Smith had Khushi dismissed when he drilled a ball hard and low to Colin Ingram at mid-on and claimed a second wicket from the last ball of the Powerplay when he had Josh Rymel caught at point.Walter was the next man in and he, along with Pepper, continued to attack, with the rate rarely dropping below 10 an over throughout the Essex innings. Pepper made 42 from just 19 balls when he was trapped lbw by Hatzoglou. It was Walter who was the star as he made the highest score for Essex, 78 from 34 balls that contained six sixes. He was dismissed when he drove a ball from Hatzoglou to long-off and Ingram took a simple catch.Despite the regular wickets, Essex still kept coming hard and their lower order, led by Daniel Sams, took them well past 200 to give Glamorgan a target that would be a record chase on this ground.Glamorgan began their pursuit of the 227-run victory target with a very impressive performance inside the Powerplay. Kiran Carlson and Sam Northeast took the score to 65 without loss inside the first six overs and shared a stand of 76 before Carlson was well caught off the bowling of Matt Critchley for 40 from 18 balls.Northeast followed up his 76 against Surrey on Wednesday with a well-made 46 in this match before he also fell to Critchley, bowled while using his feet to get down the track. That wicket brought together Glamorgan’s in-form pairing of Ingram and Chris Cooke. The issue was the same as in the game against Surrey, they needed something record-breaking to get their team over the line. With 118 needed from just 53 balls when their partnership began Glamorgan needed one of these two to be batting at the end of the match. As it was they both made decent starts but failed to kick on.Ingram was caught on the boundary by Critchley off the bowling of Snater for 46 and Cooke was caught and bowled by Walter. When Billy Root was dismissed the next ball, also caught and bowled by Walter, Glamorgan were five down and needed to score at 16 runs an over.Wickets tumbled at the end to leave Glamorgan a long way short of their victory target as they went from 158 for 3 to 175 all out. And with Hatzoglou not coming out to bat it seems if their extensive injury list has got longer.
