Hazlewood looking to play 'at least three' Ashes Tests

Injury, as well as an abundance of caution, have seen him play just four Tests in the last two years

Andrew McGlashan14-Jun-2023History could be about to repeat itself for Josh Hazlewood as he waits to see whether his services will be required for the first Ashes Test at Edgbaston. But while he accepts playing the whole series is unlikely given his recent injury record, anything fewer than three appearances would leave him disappointed. One of Hazlewood (222 Test wickets at 25.83), Mitchell Starc (310 wickets at 27.64) or Scott Boland (33 wickets at 14.57) will not make Australia’s side on Friday, with the decision likely to be between the two senior quicks after Boland’s impact in the World Test Championship final against India added to his fairytale start in Test cricket.Neither Hazlewood or Starc made Australia’s starting XI four years ago with James Pattinson and Peter Siddle joining Pat Cummins. Hazlewood, who had missed the preceding ODI World Cup through injury, would go on to play the remaining four games, taking 20 wickets at 21.85 in the 2-2 draw where Australia retained the urn.”If we go back a few years, I would have said [I expected to play] all six [Tests]. But I guess it’s a little bit different now, based on the last two years of history,” he said. “I think three would be nice pass and four is probably a tick. Any more than that is great. Any less then I am probably a little disappointed again.”But I think when you have that depth for each game you [can] really go as hard as you can and then reassess after the game because you always have someone of high quality sitting on the pine and ready to go. So it’s a great position to be in for the team.”Two years, four Tests for HazlewoodA very cautious approach was taken with Hazlewood for the Test Championship final after two years which has seen him play just four Test matches. He returned home from the tour of India with an Achilles injury caused by soft run-ups at the SCG in his previous comeback Test in January and was then withdrawn from the final after leaving the IPL early with side soreness.”I think if it was a one-off game I probably could have played,” he said. “[But] with what’s coming up now, it just would have been too big of a risk. This sets me up nicely if I’m selected for game one, then we have a nice rest after and we’ll take it from there.”Captain Pat Cummins has stated that he wants to play all six Tests on this trip. Meanwhile, Scott Boland believes that it will be tough unless a couple of the games have early finishes. Having missed so much Test cricket of late, Hazlewood is desperate to get his place back but also has tempered expectations.”Think having those [fast bowling] options helps that mindset,” he said. “No doubt you still want to play every game and it’s hard to sit on the sidelines and watch. No shying away from that.”But potentially if you [have] back-to-back Tests and you bowl 50 overs and you’ve someone [like] Boland, Starc or myself on the bench, fresh and ready to go for the next Test, it makes those conversations a little bit easier. The guys are a little bit more open to it to create that longevity. Perhaps the all-format guys are more open to it than others.”He also acknowledged the depth of Australia’s attack means that bowlers don’t push themselves beyond breaking point. “You might miss one or two games with a niggle rather than pushing it and missing three or four months,” he said.Josh Hazlewood presents Test debutant Scott Boland with his ‘Baggy Green’ cap•CA/Cricket Australia/Getty ImagesHazlewood’s outstanding English recordWith 222 Test wickets and 36 at 23.58 in England, Hazlewood does not need to prove his credentials, although there are perhaps questions marks around his durability even though coaches and medical staff have been at pains not to link his run of injuries (four of the Tests he missed were also due to conditions in Pakistan and Sri Lanka). He admitted to wanting to make statement when he returned against South Africa in January where he bowled impressively and found reverse swing, only for his exertions as part of a two-man pace attack to sideline him again, but now the overriding emotion is one of anticipation.”I probably felt that maybe a little bit more in Sydney leading into that game. I think in England, my record is pretty good. Pretty confident in these conditions,” he said. “What’s exciting is probably what England have done the last 18 months. It’s what a few of us need to get the best out of ourselves.”England still get out the same wayWith India having been dealt with to secure the World Test Championship, Australia’s quick bowlers will sit down over the next 48 overs to map out their plans for England’s Bazballing batting line-up but they won’t be reinventing the wheel. They are familiar with the majority of the players, although the statistic about Ben Duckett only leaving eight deliveries so far in his Test cricket pricked Hazelwood’s interest.”That’s a quite amazing,” he said. “Obviously he likes bat on ball. So [we will] try and use that to our advantage as best we can.”While we are bowling at their batsmen it’s about sticking to that six to eight metre length. Think what we’ve seen through the numbers in the last 18 months to two years, they are still getting out in similar ways, they are just scoring more runs quickly in between. So it’s about sticking to that line and length. If they hit us off that for five Tests then that’s good for them.”

Incredible Gyokeres alternative: Arsenal table bid for "monster" striker

At the end of the day, goals win games, and Arsenal have simply not scored enough of them this season.

In the Premier League, the Gunners have scored fewer goals than Liverpool, Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur, and in the Champions League, ten sides scored more goals than them in the league phase.

Mikel Arteta’s side are an incredibly difficult team to play against, thanks to their league-leading defence, but unless they can find a way to put the ball in the back of the net more often, next season could be another year of almost getting over the line.

Arsenal manager MikelArtetacelebrates after the match

Fortunately, reports have suggested that the board and new Sporting Director Andrea Berta are looking to solve this problem and have identified the player to do so.

Arsenal's striker search

Arsenal have needed another striker for what feels like years now, and while they failed to address this need across the last two transfer windows, they appear intent on not making the same mistake again in the summer.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Perhaps the most exciting striker linked with the club this year is Alexander Isak, who has scored 28 goals in 33 games this season.

However, with Newcastle United supposedly after at least £125m to entertain his exit, it’s a move that feels incredibly unlikely.

Another player often named as a target for the Gunners is Viktor Gyokeres, who has continued his sensational form for Sporting CP last season into this one, although there is plenty of interest in him from other sides, which could complicate matters.

Fortunately, a recent report from Spain revealed that the North Londoners are in pole position for another top-quality striker who may be a better alternative to the Swede: Benjamin Sesko.

In fact, the report claims that the Gunners have already made a bid of €70m for the striker, which is around £59m.

RB Leipzig's BenjaminSeskobefore taking a penalty

Moreover, while other sides are keen on securing the Slovenian’s services this summer, the North Londoners are in a ‘privileged position’ to complete the deal and bring Sesko to the Emirates.

Why Sesko would be a brilliant Gyokeres alternative

So, the first thing to admit is that, yes, based on this season and last season, Gyokeres appears to be the far more prolific centre-forward.

After all, since moving to Sporting, the Swedish international has racked up a tally of 111 goal involvements in 92 games, whereas the Slovenian forward has managed to hit 43 in his 79 appearances since moving to Leipzig two years ago.

However, it’s just as important to note that UEFA currently ranks the Portuguese league as the seventh-best league in Europe, whereas the Bundesliga is fourth and is considered to be among the traditional top five, meaning the level of opposition is far higher.

RB Leipzig's BenjaminSeskoshoots at goal

Moreover, while he’s not been as prolific as the former Stockholm-born star this season, it does not mean he’s been underwhelming.

In 37 appearances, totalling 2681 minutes, he’s scored 17 goals and provided six assists, which comes out to an average of a goal involvement every 1.60 games or every 116.56 minutes.

To put that in context, he’d be Arsenal’s top scorer this season and level for goal involvements overall with Bukayo Saka, which isn’t bad company to keep for a young centre-forward.

That brings us to the second reason why signing the Radeče-born dynamo could be the wiser option: his age.

By the start of next season, the Leipzig gem will be just 22 years old, while the Swede will be 27.

While that doesn’t mean the latter would be a bad investment, it does mean the club would get less out of him in the long run, and there is more scope for Sesko to reach a higher ceiling as the years progress.

Finally, while both players are tall and powerful centre-forwards, the Slovenian “monster,” as dubbed by respected analyst Ben Mattinson, comes in at 6 foot 5. In contrast, Gyokeres is 6 foot 2, and if we know anything about Arteta, he has preferred to sign bigger, more intimidating players in recent years.

Just imagine a spine of William Saliba, Gabriel Magalhaes, Declan Rice, Mikel Merino, and Sesko up top; there wouldn’t be a team in Europe capable of bullying Arsenal off the ball.

Ultimately, the Gunners need a new number nine this summer, and while there are a number of players who’d fit the bill, Sesko looks like he’s someone who could come in and do the job immediately while also developing into an even better player as the years go by.

'The best decision' – Millie Bright explains shock Lionesses withdrawal from Euro 2025 contention as Chelsea star opens up on burnout

Chelsea star Millie Bright has explained why her move to withdraw from England's upcoming European Championship campaign was the "best decision".

The Chelsea captain shocked many when she withdrew from this summer's Euros, citing burnout. Now, the Lionesses centre-back has gone a little deeper on her reasoning, saying she had given this a "lot of thought" and that she wouldn't have been at her best at the tournament.

    WHAT BRIGHT SAID

She said on her podcast, The Rest Is Football: Daly Brightness: "Obviously a really, really big and tough decision. We all have to make big decisions at some point in our lives, not just our careers. And for me at this moment in time, I just don't feel 100% mentally or physically in a position to go on and compete in a tournament. And listen, I think with the Lionesses and the squad, they have an unbelievable pool of players to choose from. I think we both know how much it takes to be at a tournament and the things that you have to tolerate mentally, physically.

"The demands of it are incredibly high and I would see it as a little bit selfish to take up an opportunity in a position from somebody else when I'm not 100% there. It wasn’t an easy decision and one that I take unlikely. It was something that I'd spoken about with friends, family, the people around me, and I gave it a lot of thought. But ultimately, I thought this was the best decision for the team, but also for myself and using this summer to really just zone into mentally, physically, getting myself back in tip-top condition and just happy again, I think, all round, just feeling like myself. So yeah, it's obviously hard, but I'm going to be the girls' number one supporter and I know they're going to go on and smash it."

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Bright has been one of England's best defenders in recent years, highlighted by the fact she has captained her country. The Lionesses are trying to retain their Euros title but that may have become more difficult following the 31-year-old's decision to pull out. Despite that, she and the country will hope those going to the Euros can bring the trophy home.

Better than Marmoush: 9/10 Man City star has made himself undroppable

After Erling Haaland had squandered a first half penalty and AFC Bournemouth raced into a one goal lead courtesy of star striker Evanilson, Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City looked set for a demoralising FA Cup exit.

But, a terrific second half turnaround saw the Citizens eventually run out as a determined 2-1 victors to soar into the semi-finals, with the aforementioned Nordic centre-forward atoning for his spot-kick howler by levelling up proceedings in the South Coast sunshine.

The lethal City number nine wasn’t the only striker to get in the on the goalscoring act, as the winning goal of the afternoon would fall to new recruit Omar Marmoush a matter of minutes after he came on in place of Haaland.

Marmoush's performance in numbers

Marmoush has been an instant success donning his new colours, with the ex-Eintracht Frankfurt forward already a reliable option Guardiola can throw into contests.

Indeed, the electric Egyptian has five goals next to his name from 11 City outings, with his goal contribution numbers for the season – which includes his whirlwind output in Germany – up to a staggering 40 goals and assists from 35 clashes.

Kepa Arrizabalaga could perhaps have done better with this effort, but the clinical City number seven wouldn’t have cared one bit when wheeling away in celebration, knowing his strike had sealed his side’s progression through to Wembley.

It really was a game where the substitutes stood out for the star-studded visitors, with 20-year-old sensation Nico O’Reilly arguably putting in the performance of the game when handed the full second half.

O'Reilly's performance in numbers

Everyone associated with the reigning Premier League champions knows that this summer could be one of immense change as some of the current declining crop move on from the Etihad.

Thankfully, stars such as O’Reilly are proving to the City faithful that the future can be bright with a next generation of talent coming through.

From just 30 touches of the ball, the promising City number 75 would wreak absolute havoc, with one dart forward early into the second half finished off by Haaland, before then teeing up Marmoush for 2-1.

Away from shining in an attacking capacity, O’Reilly also won his fair share of duels with three successfully won, on top of also winning two tackles to preserve his side’s slender advantage right until the full-time whistle was sounded.

Having picked up three goals in the FA Cup this season too away from his heroics against the Cherries, it now feels like a matter of time before the 20-year-old is regularly picked by Guardiola in the Premier League, with his versatility to play in a number of different roles potentially coming in handy.

The Manchester-born starlet has lined up as an attacking midfielder and striker primarily for the U23s, but the 9/10 performer – as was the post-match rating gifted to him by Manchester Evening News journalist Simon Bajkowski – has even lined up in the left-back spot in the senior set-up to date which more than proves his flexible nature.

With the future of Guardiola’s men very much a topic of conversation, O’Reilly’s time for more consistent first-team minutes must come very soon, especially if he can continue to change games in the same manner he did against Andoni Iraola’s stern hosts.

Indeed, although he did not start today’s game, he’s made himself undroppable heading into their midweek fixture. He simply has to be on the team sheet.

ICC chairman and CEO to visit Pakistan with World Cup participation as chief agenda

PCB also likely to take up its concerns with the ICC regarding the latter’s proposed revenue-distribution model

Umar Farooq29-May-2023ICC chairman Greg Barclay and CEO Geoff Allardice are set to visit Pakistan on Tuesday, with the country’s participation in the World Cup in India in October-November this year expected to be the main part of the discussions. The trip is part of a series of regular visits to Full Members.Given the tense relations between India and Pakistan, PCB head Najam Sethi suggested there is a “distinct possibility” that the Pakistan government will not allow Pakistan to travel to India. The World Cup schedule is to be announced during the World Test Championship final which starts at The Oval from June 7, although there continues to be uncertainty over Pakistan’s participation in the tournament. That arose when India refused to travel to Pakistan for the Asia Cup to be held in September, and neither agreed to the PCB’s proposed hybrid model that will see only four out of 13 Asia Cup matches to be played in Pakistan. As per that proposal, the remaining nine matches – including the final – will be played at a neutral venue.Related

PCB unhappy with ICC's proposed revenue distribution model

ICC meeting set to discuss India-Pak situation, Afghanistan question

World Cup 2023 likely to start on October 5 and end on November 19

Although Pakistan are officially the hosts of the tournament, the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) is yet to give a green signal for the tournament to be held as proposed by the PCB. However, heads of the India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Afghanistan boards are to meet during the IPL final in Ahmedabad for informal discussions on the Asia Cup.Wasim Khan, the ICC’s general manager of cricket, said on Monday that the discussions between India and Pakistan on this matter are still “ongoing”.”That’s something that is ongoing at the moment. Greg and Geoff are in Pakistan at the moment (landing Tuesday morning), discussing a number of areas with the PCB hierarchy,” Wasim said. “That is certainly up to the two countries and the hierarchy within the ICC to discuss and come to some conclusions.”Barclay and Allardice’s visit to Pakistan will be the first by high-ranked ICC officials since the then-president Ray Mali’s visit in 2008. They will be in the country for two days, during which a range of topics will be on the table, including the ICC’s finance model and deliberations around Pakistan hosting the Champions Trophy in February 2025. It is understood that Barclay also visited India before his trip to Pakistan.Last year, Pakistan had earned the right to host their first ICC event since 1996 when they had co-hosted the World Cup along with India and Sri Lanka. While Pakistan was initially supposed to host the Champions Trophy in 2008, the tournament was postponed to 2009 for security reasons, only for South Africa to eventually host it in September-October that year. Thereafter, an attack on the visiting Sri Lanka team in early 2009 then took away Pakistan’s hosting rights of the 2011 World Cup.However, Pakistan have been back to staging international cricket over the last few years and have hosted South Africa, Australia, England and New Zealand for full tours, even as matches against India have taken place only across ICC and ACC events.Meanwhile, the PCB is also likely to take up its concerns with the ICC regarding the latter’s proposed revenue-distribution model. Although the model is yet to be finalised, it is expected to be approved by June, before being formally adopted at the ICC’s AGM in Durban in July. But Sethi said his board will not approve the model unless it is presented with more details of the workings behind it. From the proposed model, the BCCI is expected to receive 38.5% of the ICC’s annual projected earnings of US $600 million, with the PCB to get a much lower share of only 5.75%.

Godfrey upgrade: Ipswich loanee has seen his value rise 3852% after leaving

With no Premier League victories coming their way during the early stages of 2025, Ipswich Town do look set to fall immediately back down to the Championship.

The Tractor Boys haven’t completely disgraced themselves with memorable wins against Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea at least sticking out, but there just doesn’t seem to be enough in the tank at Portman Road to maintain their top-flight position past this fleeting visit.

One factor that has arguably hindered Ipswich has been their hit-and-miss approach in the transfer market, with a number of loanees entering the building going on to have contrasting fortunes in Suffolk.

One of which is January arrival, Ben Godfrey.

Where Ben Godfrey ranks among Ipswich's loan signings

It has to be said that the Tractor Boys have at least been proactive in the market to try and give themselves a fighting chance at survival, regardless if many of their temporary signings haven’t been overwhelming success stories.

The additions of Jens Cajuste and Kalvin Phillips have boosted the underdogs somewhat, with Cajuste even picking up two Player of the Month accolades for November and December, off the back of the Napoli loanee winning an encouraging 3.3 duels per league clash.

Moreover, the ex-Leeds United man has also shown flashes of his class by winning 3.9 duels per match but it hasn’t been smooth sailing for every loan recruit.

Indeed, Julio Enciso has found his stint in Suffolk so far to be mainly injury-ridden, whilst the aforementioned Godfrey has largely found his spell away from Atalanta to be crushing for his confidence when looking at the sheer number of goals he’s leaked lining up in defence.

Looking at the numbers, Godfrey has looked out of his depth on his return to English soil, further leaving Ipswich full of anguish that they didn’t sign anyone better over the winter.

As it happens, a fellow full-back is now starring after a loan spell at Portman Road many years ago.

Ipswich loan star is now a Ben Godfrey upgrade

As is the case with a large quantity of EFL clubs, the loan market proves to be invaluable in gifting your side some additional star quality on a short-term basis.

Where Are They Now

Your star player or biggest flop has left the club but what are they doing in the present day? This article is part of Football FanCast’s Where Are They Now series.

When Ipswich were routinely competing towards the top end of the second tier, Portman Road was home to many a standout loanee, including ex-Arsenal youngster Ainsley Maitland-Niles during the 2015/16 season.

At the time, Maitland-Niles was just a wide-eyed product of the illustrious Gunners academy eager to prove a point in the senior game, rated at just £210k, according to Transfermarkt.

Fast forward past his formative time in Suffolk and Maitland-Niles would eventually go on to make a name for himself, with the versatile presence picking up an impressive two goals and three assists from 32 appearances when regularly lining up as a right winger.

The five-time senior England international had to spread his wings away from Arsenal to fully show off his best game, however, but his current spell at Olympique de Lyonnais is definitely playing to his strengths as an attack-oriented right-back.

As a consequence of a handful of England caps and his performances in Ligue 1, his transfer valuation has gone all the way up to £8m during his time with the French giants, representing a major 3852% increase from his once meagre price-tag.

Hailed as “tremendous” by football journalist Rob Sills during a different loan adventure out at Southampton, there must be some woe on Ipswich’s end that they can’t call upon Maitland-Niles in the right-back spot now when you take into account his six clean sheets for Lyon this campaign among other glowing numbers.

Capable of playing in midfield too, he could really have given McKenna a useful utility body, but the relegation-threatened side will simply have to make do with what they’ve got.

U.S. Men's National Team head coach Mauricio Pochettino believes Christian Pulisic should aim to become the American equivalent of Lionel Messi. Speaking on the with Landon Donovan and Tim Howard, Pochettino said the AC Milan winger has the talent and profile to be the face of soccer in the United States.

“I don’t want to be disrespectful with Messi or with Pulisic… but I think in this country, Pulisic should be our Messi,” Pochettino said. “Because he’s an iconic player. The kid on the street – for sure, if you ask about one soccer player in this country, it’s Pulisic.”

Pochettino praised the 25-year-old’s growth over the past year, both at the club and international level.

“Christian, in the last year, was showing great quality, and he’s performing in Europe, and also he’s performing here in the national team,” he said. “He’s a very talented player who can help us to win.”

Though Pulisic won’t be part of the USMNT’s Gold Cup squad this summer, Pochettino’s comments make clear the level of respect the manager has for his star player.

AdvertisementWHAT MAURICIO POCHETTINO SAID

Pochettino further touched on whether he feels disappointed with Pulisic opting to miss the Gold Cup and use the opportunity to take rest instead after a long season.

“When you talk about if I feel disappointed or not, I think we have very good communication with our players, and Christian is a very nice guy and very committed with the national team, and he wants to help," Pochettino said. "And of course, he’s desperate to play the World Cup and arrive in the best condition. In all this conversation that we were having with the player, I think, that was the best, maybe, decision to help him because every player is in different circumstances.”

He added, "I think the teammates respect Christian and Antonee, but the thing is sometimes you need to put the interest in medium-long-term than in the present.”

The former Tottenham and Paris Saint-Germain head coach also talked about the March international break and his reaction to the USMNT’s Nations League finish.

“For me, after the March camp, I said ‘OK, I don’t care about nothing, I want to win tomorrow and I want to win," he said.

Although Pochettino appeared to be understanding of Pulisic and Robinson's decision to miss the Gold Cup, he acknowledged that it is challenging to determine his best squad, considering all the absences.

"I think we are all focused on the World Cup, and sometimes we need to be open and flexible in some decisions," he explained. “When we talk about this type of decision for us, I think it was a tough decision because I think we agreed because it was also our idea. It was our decision, in the end, because if you say you need to come, but I think we cannot force the players to come. But I think I need to be fair and say, it was a collective decision to try to find the best for the national team and for the best for the player.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Despite being part of the Mumbai Indians franchise and playing for MI Cape Town in the SA T20 last year, after he had completed his BBL commitments, as well as MI New York in the upcoming Major League Cricket in the United States, David will continue to commit to the BBL with Hurricanes for the next two seasons.”I am very happy to be extending with the Hurricanes for the next couple of years,” David said.”While I am playing a lot of my cricket overseas, I feel at home among my teammates and support staff in the Hurricanes setup, and I am hopeful that I can contribute more to this group going forward.”Ben McDermott goes on the attack•Getty Images

McDermott has committed to Hurricanes long-term despite leaving Tasmania after eight years to relocate to Queensland with his young family to play his domestic cricket for the Bulls.McDermott said it was difficult to leave Tasmania but remaining with Hurricanes provided a silver lining.”I haven’t spoken a whole lot publicly about it, but it was genuinely a really difficult decision to make,” McDermott said. “Ultimately, family comes before everything, which I know everyone down in Tassie was really understanding and supportive of, but it was a really hard decision given how long I was down there, how much I grew as a cricketer during my time in that program, and the fact that a lot of the guys I played with for all of those years are some of my best mates.”The fact that competitions like the Big Bash allow players to move around a little bit is perfect for me – there’s a lot of similarity between the Tigers and Hurricanes squads, so I’m rapt that I will still have the opportunity to play with a lot of those guys and spend some quality time down in Tassie over the next few years.”Plus, on-field, I really believe we have a great team that can make history for the Hurricanes. We had pretty much all of the ingredients last year, and things just didn’t quite go our way when it counted. With a couple of tweaks here and there, I’m really excited about what we can achieve not just in BBL 13, but beyond that as well.”Hobart Hurricanes squad: Tim David, Paddy Dooley, Nathan Ellis, Peter Hatzoglou, Caleb Jewell, Ben McDermott, Riley Meredith, Mitch Owen, Billy Stanlake, Matthew Wade
