Bigger talent than Reijnders: Pep driving Man City move for £43m sensation

After crashing out of the Club World Cup late on Monday night, Manchester City and their squad can finally look forward to some well-earned rest.

Earlier this week, Orlando witnessed the biggest shock of the Club World Cup as the Sky Blues were dumped out by Al-Hilal after extra time, defeated 4-3, with Bernardo Silva, Erling Braut Håland and Phil Foden all on target in vain in Florida.

So, 324 days after their season began in the FA Community Shield against Manchester United at Wembley, Pep Guardiola and his players can finally go on holiday, commencing the new Premier League campaign at Molineux against Wolves in just over six weeks’ time.

So now, as the Sky Blues seek to regain the Premier League and the Champions League in 2026, expect them to continue to be busy in the transfer market.

Manchester City targeting a new midfielder

Already this summer, the Citizens have signed Rayan Aït-Nouri, Rayan Cherki and Tijjani Reijnders for a combined £112m, taking their tally of signings to nine in 2025 already, if you include Marcus Bettinelli, as the table below outlines.

All three summer signings impressed during the Club World Cup, with Rayan Cherki bagging his first goal in sky blue during the 6-0 demolition of Al Ain at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, but Guardiola is demanding more.

According to reports in Spain, Manchester City are considering a move for Barcelona midfielder Fermín López, claiming that Guardiola believes the Spanish international would ‘fit perfectly into his system’, hence why he has ‘expressed his desire to accelerate negotiations’.

They add that Barça could be tempted to sell Fermín, who is valued at around £43m, if it would allow them to sign and, more pertinently, register Nico Williams, who Pol Ballús of the Athletic believes wants to join the Catalan giants this summer, but this deal faces numerous financial stumbling blocks.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

The 22-year-old signed a new contract at Barcelona in October, containing a €500m release clause (around £431m), but could Barça’s precarious finances force them to sell the la Masia graduate?

How Fermín López would improve Manchester City

Fermín was a regular figure for Hansi Flick’s domestic treble winners last season, making 46 appearances, albeit 27 of those were as a substitute, earning plenty of praise.

FC Barcelona'sFerminLopezin action with Las Palmas' Stefan Bajcetic

Jacek Kulig of Football Talent Scout labelled his performances “amazing”, while Fintan O’Reilly of Total Football Analysis believes he is at his best ‘drifting into the half space’, noting that he is a ‘high-volume shooter’ who also ranks highly for ‘defensive actions’, showing that he is an all-action, all round midfield player.

Meantime, Declan Haywood of Breaking the Lines believes he ‘epitomises’ the modern-Barça tiki-taka style, noting how Fermín’s ‘versatility’ allows him to thrice in and out of possession, asserting that he is destined to go to the very top. In the words of former boss Xavi Hernandez, he is the “whole package”.

So, let’s assess how the Spaniard compares to Man City’s most recent midfield signing, Reijnders.

In the table above, Fermín comes out on top for pretty much every metric included, excluding goals and pass completion, indicating why he could well be an even bigger talent than the Dutchman.

The Spaniard’s statistics are more impressive than Reijnders’ when it comes to shots, chances created and passing, as well as defensive metrics such as duels and ball recoveries.

This all supports the idea that Fermín is an outstanding all-round midfield talent so, if Man City can take advantage of Barcelona’s ongoing financial crisis and snap him up on the cheap, they absolutely should.

Gaby Lewis replaces Laura Delany as Ireland Women captain

Orla Prendergast, 22, has been named vice-captain

ESPNcricinfo staff15-Oct-2024Ireland Women are looking to the future with the appointment of Gaby Lewis as their new captain taking over from their most experienced player ever, Laura Delany.Delany represented Ireland 207 times across formats, and for the past eight years she’s been leading them as well. They were unable to make the Women’s T20 World Cup but have had recent success, levelling a bilateral contest with Sri Lanka 1-1 in August, when Lewis scored a century and was named Player of the Series. They beat Sri Lanka 2-1 in the ODIs that followed.”I know when I first came into the senior set-up, Dells was one of those team-mates you looked to for inspiration,” Lewis, who is currently in Melbourne, playing club cricket, said. “Moving from the amateur to professional era, she has continually looked to develop and improve her game, and I look forward to playing alongside Dells on many more occasions as we move into the next stage of our squad’s development.”Lewis made her debut for Ireland when she was just 13. She is their highest run-scorer with a tally of 3,742 at 28.95 across formats with two centuries and 21 half-centuries. The 23-year-old has also captained her country 12 times and will now take over full-time ahead of tours to Bangladesh and India coming up in November and January respectively.”I am delighted to be asked to be Ireland Women’s captain on a permanent basis,” Lewis said. “I thoroughly enjoyed acting in the role during the summer and am genuinely excited about the young talent coming through the system. While we are a young squad, the results in recent years have shown that we can compete with the best.”Ireland selector Ciara O’Brien confirmed that Delany would continue playing for the team and head coach Ed Joyce praised her contributions through the course of a career that began in 2010.”I have been privileged to work closely with Laura over the last five years,” Joyce said, “And have profound respect for the work she has done, both on-the-field and off.”Not only has she led the squad through the transition from the amateur to professional era, but the incredible support she offered the squad during those Covid years goes largely unrecognised. Laura’s one of the most competitive and focused players I have worked with, and I have greatly enjoyed every minute.”Orla Prendergast, 22, has been named Ireland’s vice-captain. She made a telling contribution with both bat and ball as Ireland came from behind to draw a T20I series against England in September.”Orla also got the opportunity to lead the team this summer when both Laura and Gaby were injured, and we were very impressed with how she handled some high-pressure situations during the Sri Lanka series,” Joyce said. “Gaby and Orla together then worked very well as the leadership team in the games where both played.”We have tours of Bangladesh and India this winter, an Under-19s Women’s T20 World Cup and a crucially important year ahead in 2025. Not only will we have another busy home summer, but there are qualifying tournaments to navigate for both the 2025 50-over World Cup and 2026 T20 World Cup. As such, we considered now the right time in the cycle to give the new leadership team time to settle in and begin planning.”

Even better than Muniz: Leeds lining up move to sign "dominant" £30m star

Leeds United could be in the market for further reinforcements in the attacking areas of the pitch before the summer transfer window officially slams shut.

Lukas Nmecha, who signed on a free transfer from Wolfsburg, is the only attacker to have joined the squad so far, and the Whites are set to miss out on a deal for Feyenoord winger Igor Paixao.

Their pursuit of the Brazilian dynamo suggests that they are in the market to sign a new left winger, after Manor Solomon returned to Tottenham Hotspur at the end of last season.

The Whites are also looking for a new centre-forward to lead their line in the Premier League, as Football Insider reported earlier this summer that the club have doubts over Joel Piroe’s ability to make the step up.

Joel Piroe

Earlier this month, it was reported that Leeds are looking to cash in on wantaway forward Mateo Joseph in order to fund a new bid to sign Fulham centre-forward Rodrigo Muniz.

What Rodrigo Muniz could bring to Leeds

The Brazilian striker could bring a proven presence at the top end of the pitch in the Premier League, as he has been there and done it in the division with Fulham.

Muniz has showcased his ability to find the back of the net efficiently in the league in the last two seasons, outperforming his xG in the 2023/24 and 2024/25 campaigns for the Cottagers.

As you can see in the table above, the striker has not yet hit double figures for goals in a Premier League season, but he has rarely been a starter for his side.

The 24-year-old star would not need any time to adapt to the league or the country, as he is a proven quantity, and that could appeal to Leeds in their search for a new number nine.

However, Muniz has never scored more than nine goals in a single league season in his career, and there may be doubts over his ability to deliver consistently over the course of an entire campaign.

That may be why the Championship champions are now reportedly looking at an alternative centre-forward option, who could be even better than the Fulham marksman if they can get a deal over the line.

Leeds eyeing move for Serie A forward

According to RomaPress, Leeds United are one of a number of teams interested in a deal to sign Roma number nine Artem Dovbyk this summer.

The report claims that the Whites and fellow Premier League side West Ham United are both lining up moves to sign the Ukraine international to bolster their options at the top end of the pitch.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

It adds that Roma are looking for a fee within the region of £30m in order to part ways with the left-footed centre-forward, although it remains to be seen whether or not Leeds are prepared to spend that much on him.

RomaPress also note that fellow Italian outlet Leggo have reported that Turkish giants Besiktas have made contact with Roma to discuss a potential deal for Dovbyk.

AS Roma's ArtemDovbyklooks dejected after Lazio's Alessio Romagnoli scores their first goal

It is now down to the 49ers and Daniel Farke to push to beat the likes of Besiktas and West Ham to his signature this summer, because he would be an even better signing than Muniz.

Why Leeds should sign Artem Dovbyk

The 28-year-old attacker is a striker who has the potential to deliver goals at an impressive rate in the Premier League, as a star who has proven his quality in multiple top European leagues.

Dovbyk, who was described as “dominant” in the air by analyst Ben Mattinson, has impressed in both LaLiga and the Serie A since he moved away from Ukraine in the summer of 2023, after scoring 38 goals in 47 games in his last two seasons in the Premier Liga.

The £30m-rated star has hit double figures for goals five times at league level throughout his career, including in each of the last four seasons, whilst Muniz is yet to do it once.

Dovbyk has also scored 24 goals in a league season twice in his career, once in Ukraine and once in Spain, which suggests that he has the potential to be an incredibly prolific figure in front of goal for Leeds if he can adapt to English football.

As you can see in the table above, the Ukraine international has scored 36 goals in Europe’s top five leagues in the last two seasons, whilst Muniz scored 17 goals for Fulham in the Premier League in that time.

Muniz also managed just three ‘big chances’ created and two assists in the league in that time, which suggests that Dovbyk is also more likely to provide a big threat as a creator, based on his 15 ‘big chances’ created in the last two campaigns.

These statistics suggest that the Roma star has the potential to offer far more to the team than the Fulham centre-forward, as he has delivered more as both a scorer and a creator of goals in the last couple of years.

It would be a bit more of a gamble for Leeds to take, as he has yet to prove himself in the Premier League, but they can be assured by the fact that he has scored goals at an impressive rate in the Spanish and Italian top-flights already.

Therefore, if it gets to a point where the club have to decide between pursuing Muniz or Dovbyk, they should look to swoop for the Ukraine international to lead the line for Farke next season.

Everton in contact to sign "fantastic" defender who pocketed Calvert-Lewin

Everton are in new hands under the Friedkin Group and have made contact over a potential new arrival that could pitch up at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, according to reports.

Everton circling for more new signings

Thierno Barry, Carlos Alcaraz and Mark Travers have kicked off what is expected to be a summer of change at Everton. However, David Moyes still has plenty of work to do before his side are capable of pushing on in the Premier League.

Over the weekend, a surprise defeat to Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park wasn’t a satisfactory outcome for anyone concerned with the club, but pre-season is nothing more than laying the groundwork to make sure fitness is up to scratch once the competitive campaign kicks off in earnest.

Reports suggest Manchester City duo Jack Grealish and James McAtee are on Everton’s shortlist to beef up their creative options centrally and out wide, even if both players will attract a plethora of interest this summer from several different clubs.

Delivering his slant on their need for inventiveness, Paul Robinson believes the Toffees could win the race to sign Tom Fellows from West Bromwich Albion despite Leeds United’s admiration due to the fact Moyes was keen to bring him to Merseyside in January.

He stated: “Leeds have bolstered their defence, so I’m hoping they’re building from the floor upwards. Tom Fellows would fit that bill, he’d be a great signing, but Everton are ahead because of where they were in January with him.

“I do think he’ll go in this window because of the length of his contract. This is where West Brom are going to get a big fee for him.”

However, Moyes will also be keen to strengthen his defensive line, and he may be making progress towards achieving that feat if reports are to be believed.

Everton make contact for Atletico Mineiro defender Lyanco

According to Globo, Everton have made contact over Atletico Mineiro defender Lyanco to ask for information about his situation at the Brazilian giants.

Most remember Lyanco for his time at Southampton, and he previously shone against Everton in a 2-1 win for the Saints at Goodison Park, where Dominic Calvert-Lewin failed to score or provide an assist.

Labelled a “fantastic character” by Ralph Hasenhuttl, he would arrive with the carrot of Premier League experience and is coming off the back of a positive Club World Cup, which is said to have alerted suitors.

Lyanco has scored four times in 27 appearances this season, but it remains to be seen whether he would be an ideal fit for an Everton squad in need of upgrades on existing personnel.

Liverpool have once again partnered with Adidas, starting from the 2025-26 season. The end of the club's last contract with Nike paved the way for the return of the 'Three Stripes' to Anfield after 13 years.

The new deal, projected to bring in over £60 million annually, officially begun on August 1, 2025. This is Adidas' third time as Liverpool's official kit partner. Their previous collaborations were from 1985 to 1996 and then again from 2006 to 2012, before the partnerships with Warrior, New Balance and Nike.

The Adidas kits from Liverpool's earlier Premier League period were famously worn by club legends such as Steven Gerrard, Jamie Carragher, Fernando Torres, and Luis Suarez, among others. During that time, the club secured one trophy, the 2012 League Cup.

Along with a different crest on every Liverpool shirt for 2025-26, Adidas has revived some of their older kit designs from when they took over from (Adidas-owned) Reebok as the club's official partner.

Here, GOAL brings you everything you need to know about the new Liverpool kits, including where to buy, prices, leaks, and more.

As tradition dictates, Liverpool's 2025-26 home kit by Adidas sticks with the club's iconic red — this time dubbed "Strawberry Red" — paired with crisp white accents for a clean, classic look.

When it comes to design, it’s a no-frills throwback. The new home shirt channels serious nostalgia, drawing clear inspiration from the 2006-07 kit, minus the oversized collar. Featuring cuffed sleeves, a simple crewneck, and white trim for the crest and sponsor, it’s a sharp, timeless piece that signals Adidas’ grand return to Anfield.

That 06-07 strip holds a special place in fans' hearts; it was the first kit Adidas crafted after taking over from Reebok in 2006, and was famously worn by club legends like Steven Gerrard, Xabi Alonso, and Daniel Agger.

Completing the look, both the shorts and socks for the 2025-26 home strip are drenched in that same bold Strawberry Red, keeping the aesthetic sleek and unified for the Reds’ new era.

Liverpool's brand-new 2025-26 home kit from Adidas has been officially on sale since August 1, 2025. Supporters can grab the standard short-sleeve version for £85 ($111), while the top-tier authentic edition will set you back £120 ($162).

Prefer long sleeves? The regular long-sleeve shirt comes in at £90 ($118), with the authentic version priced at £130 ($170).

Liverpool’s 2025-26 away kit from Adidas brings a fresh, modern twist to the club’s rich tradition. Dominated by a sleek "Wonder White" tone, the shirt pops with sharp red Adidas branding and sleeve accents, complemented perfectly by black shorts and white socks for a crisp, balanced look.

What truly sets this jersey apart is the redesigned club crest. Rather than the classic standalone Liverbird, the emblem is now framed within a bold, contemporary shield – a subtle shift that gives the kit a revitalised yet unmistakably Liverpool identity.

The pricing for the Liverpool 2025-26 away kit resonates with that of the home kit.

The adidas and Liverpool 2025-26 third kit sports a striking sea green base colour, with black stripes on the collar and sleeves. Drawing inspiration from the 1980s with striped trim, this design could be a modern take on the classic green Liverpool x Carlsberg shirts, although this version features Standard Chartered on the front.

Furthermore, besides an adidas Originals trefoil logo, the third kit is set to showcase the current Liverbird inside the old crest. Hence, the vintage Liverpool crest will make for a present-day interpretation of the one used on kits from 1987-1992, a period when adidas was previously the kit partner.

The kit is completed with white shorts, alongside sea green socks finished with adidas Three Stripes and bold ‘LFC’ lettering.

The adidas x Liverpool 2025-26 third jersey is available from September 9, 2025.

Shami bowls at full tilt on the sidelines in Bengaluru

The fast bowler had a session for more than an hour after the end of the India-NZ Test

Mohammed Shami bowled for more than an hour on one of the main pitches at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium after the conclusion of the first Test between India and New Zealand in Bengaluru on Sunday. He also took part in fielding drills as he works towards a comeback from an ankle injury that has sidelined him since November last year. The 34-year-old fast bowler had heavy strapping on his left knee but bowled at full tilt to India assistant coach Abhishek Nayar, with bowling coach Morne Morkel watching over the session. He did not look in any obvious discomfort, bowling almost continuously and only taking a break for the fielding drill close to the boundary.Shami began his session around 2.30pm and after a few warm-up deliveries, he marked out his full run-up and used that for the rest of his practice. Once Nayar was done batting, Morkel placed cones on the pitch and stood behind the wickets as Shami continued to run in and bowl. He finished up at around 3.50pm.

Shami also had a bowl after the end of play on day two, on one of the practice pitches at the far end of the M Chinnaswamy Stadium. He bowled for close to 45 minutes that day, off both a short and long run-up.Related

India are waiting on Shami’s fitness ahead of their five-Test tour of Australia beginning in November. His previous appearance was the 2023 ODI World Cup final in November last year, and he had played that tournament with an ankle injury, taking 24 wickets in seven matches at an average of 10.70.Shami underwent surgery in London in February and has not recovered in time to play a part in this year’s Indian domestic season or the Test series at home against Bangladesh and New Zealand. After the start of the Bengaluru Test against New Zealand, Rohit Sharma had said that Shami had a “setback” with a swelling on his knee.”He has not played any cricket for over a year,” Rohit had said. “It is quite tough for a fast bowler to have missed so much of cricket and then suddenly to come out and be at his best. It is not ideal. We will want to give him enough time to recover and be 100% fit.”We don’t want to bring an undercooked Shami to Australia. That is not going to be the right decision for us.”

Frank's a fan: Tottenham may hijack Newcastle's move for £50m midfielder

Tottenham Hotspur could hijack Newcastle United’s move for a “sensational” midfielder, as they are now keen on securing his signature, according to a report.

Spurs looking to bolster midfield options

One of the most talked-about summer transfer sagas up to this point has been Tottenham’s controversial pursuit of Morgan Gibbs-White, with Nottingham Forest left unhappy by the approach, given that rival clubs shouldn’t have been aware of the £60m release clause.

However, Fabrizio Romano has revealed Spurs are hopeful of being able to get the deal over the line, with the transfer expert saying: “Now, Tottenham remain confident about their chances of signing the player. But, obviously, now this is a legal topic. They need to have discussions directly with Nottingham Forest to find the solution.

“Of course, it changes the timing of the deal. Tottenham’s perfect plan was probably to sign Kudus and Gibbs-White in 24 or 48 hours. It is now going to take a bit longer, but they remain intent on signing the player. That is still their plan.”

Tottenham "seriously" keen on signing "unstoppable" £50m Simons alternative

Spurs are looking to sign an attacking midfielder this summer.

1 ByDominic Lund Jul 21, 2025

Gibbs-White has been earmarked as a major target in the attacking midfield area, but the Lilywhites are also keen to strengthen in a deeper midfield role, with Bayern Munich’s Joao Palhinha and Juventus’ Douglas Luiz among the potential targets.

In a recent report from The Boot Room, it has also been revealed that Tottenham are keen on signing Atletico Madrid’s Conor Gallagher, who could be set to leave the La Liga club this summer, given that regular game time may not be on offer next season.

Thomas Frank is said to be a fan of Gallagher, suggesting the manager could green-light a move, with Spurs looking to bring in a new number 6 this summer, but there could be competition for his signature.

Newcastle are currently leading the race for the midfielder, with Eddie Howe also believed to be a big fan, but the north Londoners’ interest suggests they may look to hijack their Premier League rivals.

"Sensational" Gallagher could be solid signing for Spurs

The former Chelsea man has already proven himself in the Premier League, being lauded for his “sensational” attitude by reporter John Cross during his time with the Blues, where his attacking talents were regularly on display.

The £50m-rated maestro amassed five goals and seven assists in the Premier League during the 2023-24 campaign, and he has since gone on to impress Atlético Madrid manager Diego Simeone from a defensive point of view.

Simeone said: “It’s never easy for players coming from England to adapt to the Spanish championship, to the language … He has competed very well in different places and in positions where he doesn’t feel more comfortable.

“He will evolve, he has room for growth. He is very intense in offensive and defensive play, he brings a lot to us.”

As such, Gallagher could be a solid signing for Tottenham, but given that he is “very happy” at Atletico, it could be difficult to get a deal done.

Their best forward since Kane: Spurs in talks to sign "world-class" star

Harry Kane may have departed Tottenham Hotspur two years ago, but his absence is still strongly felt within the current first-team squad to this day.

Losing any key player to a European giant is always likely to cause trouble, but when that player is arguably one of the best to ever wear the club’s shirt – the task of replacing him becomes a near impossible task.

The Englishman registered 280 goals for the Lilywhites, with such a tally making him their highest-ever goalscorer, surpassing the record previously held by the late Jimmy Greaves.

He managed to find the net over 30 times in 50% of the seasons he spent as a first-team regular in North London, further highlighting how important he was to their ambition for success.

However, Thomas Frank has the opportunity this summer to potentially make a move for a star who could emulate the 32-year-old’s massive success within the final third should he make the move.

The latest on Spurs’ hunt for new attackers this summer

In recent days, Roma star Matias Soule has been touted as a potential option for Spurs, looking to inject needed depth and quality into the club’s forward line.

Recent reports have suggested that Frank’s side have already made a £28m offer to sign the 22-year-old, potentially facing a battle with Aston Villa for the winger’s signature this summer.

However, he’s not the only attacker currently in their sights, leading to key work being done to complete a deal for Real Madrid star Rodrygo, according to one Spanish outlet.

They claim that the Lilywhites have already entered negotiations with the Brazilian’s representatives over a move to North London after he was told he’s free to leave the Spanish giants this window.

Their report also states that the 24-year-old could be available for a fee in the region of £86m, but Frank’s side aren’t alone in their pursuit, with fellow English sides Arsenal and Liverpool also closely monitoring the situation.

Why Spurs’ latest target would be their best attacker since Kane

After selling Kane for £82m a couple of years ago, the hierarchy turned to Dominic Solanke last summer in an attempt to fill the void left by his compatriot.

However, despite costing a club-record £65m, his first season in North London was littered with injuries, only making 25 Premier League starts and netting just nine goals.

He still has time to showcase he was worth the money spent, but the same can’t be said for Richarlison, who could be on the way out of the club this summer.

The Brazilian only managed to score four times in England’s top-flight last campaign, further highlighting the need for added quality in such an area this window.

A move for Rodrygo may prove to be a pricey one, but it’s a deal that could hand Frank the talent he craves to be a success during his first season in the role.

Real Madrid's Rodrygo

His stats from his most recent season at the Santiago Bernabéu highlight the threat he carries within the final third, arguably being worth every penny of what would be another new record signing.

Rodrygo, who’s been labelled “world-class” by analyst Ben Mattinson, scored 14 times across all competitions last season, having the goalscoring nouse despite his wide position – something the side have desperately lacked in 2024/25.

However, alongside his superb ability to find the back of the net, he also possesses a creative side that could allow those around him to bolster their own tallies next season.

He registered 5.1 progressive passes per 90, 3.1 of which were into the final third, subsequently able to help Solanke in his quest to raise his figures throughout 2025/26.

The Brazilian’s talent on the ball is further reflected in his tally of 2.3 successful take-ons per 90, subsequently wanting to take on his opponent at any given opportunity.

Should he transfer his skillset over to England with him, it would be a sensational piece of business by the board, further highlighting their ambitions of building on the recent Europa League success.

He would offer an all-round ability in attacking areas, similar to that of Kane, having the chance to make himself a fan favourite just like the Englishman did during his stint in North London.
