Frank has big shoes to fill after Ange Postecoglou ended the club’s 17-year wait for a major trophy at the back end of last campaign, which subsequently gifted Tottenham a route back into the Champions League.

The Dane is now tasked with building upon 2024/2025’s feats, with compatriot Johan Lange doing his best to assist Frank when it comes to much-needed recruitment.

Tottenham were set to welcome Nottingham Forest star Morgan Gibbs-White in a statement £115 million double-deal with Mohammed Kudus just over three weeks ago, with a medical even booked for the England international, who looked certain to be joining (BBC).

However, unprecedented events resulted in Evangelos Marinakis putting a stop to the transfer, threatening Spurs with legal action and somehow agreeing to extend Gibbs-White’s contract to end Daniel Levy’s hopes of a deal.

After this unexpected blow, Tottenham are maintaining their pursuit of new attacking options, while it is also believed that Frank wants a new full-back (Sky Sports).

Spurs were also in the market for a number six, but they’re not any longer after completing a loan deal for Bayern Munich midfielder Joao Palhinha.

Joao palhinha

The Portugal international returns to London after a lacklustre debut season at Bayern, which was marred by injury, suspension and a lack of consistent opportunities under Vincent Kompany.

Palhinha joins Tottenham on an initial temporary deal which includes an option for Spurs to buy outright next summer for £26 million – just over half of what Bayern paid to sign the 30-year-old from Fulham last summer.

Levy and co are now aiming to get the ex-Sporting Lisbon star over the line as quickly as possible, with Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg also revealing that Spurs are set to pay a £4.3 million loan fee whilst covering his full salary of around £166,000-per-week.

Now, Fabrizio Romano has shared even more details about the transfer, and Frank was apparently key.

Joao Palhinha said 'yes' to Tottenham after talks with Thomas Frank

Speaking via his YouTube channel, Romano claims that Palhinha green-light a move to Tottenham after speaking directly with the Lilywhites head coach.

“Palhinha said yes to Tottenham after speaking directly to the coach, Thomas Frank, who is really excited about the opportunity to have a player like Palhinha,” said the famous transfer journalist.

“He can provide quality, can provide experience, can provide intensity, so he wanted exactly that kind of player.”

The 30-year-old is known for his touch-tackling, energy and robustness in midfield, providing Frank with that extra bite in the middle of the park, with the manager now granted his transfer wish.

“There is no doubt that, if you want to compete in all tournaments, you need a competitive squad,” said Frank in his first ever press conference as Spurs boss.

“There are a lot of competitive players in the squad already. The club is in the market and looking. What will happen, I will speak when a player comes into the building.”

Ousmane Dembele unwittingly implicated in bizarre 'confidential' PR campaign to promote Ballon d'Or hopes as company blames 18-year-old intern for offer to journalist

Ousmane Dembele's representatives have denied being part of a bizarre PR storm after a journalist revealed a "confidential" offer to secretly promote the Paris Saint-Germain attacker's Ballon d'Or chances online. The agency behind the offer has since blamed a "curious" 18-year-old intern and insisted that it was simply an exploratory email.

  • Journalist exposes alleged campaign to boost Dembele's Ballon d'Or bid

PSG star Dembele has been unwittingly embroiled in a bizarre public relations controversy after a freelance journalist exposed a secret, paid offer to promote his Ballon d'Or candidacy online. According to an investigation by, sports writer Neal Gardner received an email with the subject "Confidential Collaboration Opportunity" from a creative agency, proposing a month-long campaign of "carefully crafted tweets" to "strengthen the narrative" around the French forward.

Agency blames 'curious' 18-year-old intern for bizarre approach

After Gardner made the approach public on social media, the company was identified as India-based marketing agency Bangrr International. The firm's founder, Ali Husain, has since blamed the incident on an "unsolicited inquiry sent by a young intern" acting without authority. In a statement, Husain claimed the 18-year-old intern sent the email out of "educational curiosity" to research influencer rates and apologised to both Gardner and Dembele for the "misunderstanding."

  • Dembele's representatives deny any involvement in campaign

The player has been completely distanced from the strange affair. When contacted for comment, Dembele's representatives emphatically denied having any knowledge of or involvement in the proposed social media campaign. Gardner himself stated he did not know who was funding the initiative before he chose to make the offer public to "raise awareness" of what he called a "ridiculous" situation.

  • Campaign exposed after Ballon d'Or voting has already closed

The entire premise of the campaign is shrouded in bizarre logic and flawed timing. The agency reportedly targeted Gardner, a known Barcelona fan, believing his pro-Dembele tweets would carry more weight. However, the most significant flaw is that the voting for the 2025 Ballon d'Or has already closed. The winner is set to be announced at the official awards ceremony in Paris next Monday, September 22, making the proposed month-long campaign entirely redundant.

Redmayne, Rodrigues help Heat ease into WBBL final after bowlers restrict Thunder

Legspinner Parsons took 3 for 10 for Heat, who will be concerned about Rodrigues’ availability for the final due to wrist injury

Brisbane Heat produced a dominant performance to storm into the WBBL final, after Jemimah Rodrigues made Sydney Thunder pay for clumsy fielding at Allan Border Field in Brisbane. But there will be concern over Rodrigues’ availability for Sunday’s final at the MCG between Heat and Melbourne Renegades. She had to retire hurt after the tenth over of the chase, having aggravated a left wrist injury sustained earlier in the game while attempting to save a boundary during Thunder’s innings. While batting, Rodrigues grew in discomfort at the crease, especially after slamming down on a yorker from seamer Taneale Peschel. After being dropped three times, Rodrigues left the field having made 43 from 30 balls, before Georgia Redmayne took over with an unbeaten half-century as Heat mowed down the 134-run target with 28 balls to spare. After electing to bowl, Heat dominated most of the Challenger final, and were right on top to leave Thunder reeling at 69 for 7 after opting to bowl. Peschel and Hannah Darlington produced a WBBL record eighth-wicket partnership of 64 runs from 36 balls in the lone bright spot for Thunder.Redmayne, Rodrigues bury ThunderHaving let slip their stranglehold late in Thunder’s innings, Heat were dealt an early blow after opener Grace Harris was stumped in the second over after having charged at left-arm spinner Samantha Bates.Rodrigues made the most of a charmed life after being dropped on 0, 25 and 30. Her inventiveness came to the fore, and she combined well in a 75-run second-wicket partnership with Redmayne, who was imperious on the back foot. But Rodrigues was increasingly in discomfort, before pulling the pin on her innings. Her fitness will be a major talking point ahead of the WBBL final, and also for India’s upcoming ODI series against Australia.Grace Parsons bagged 3 for 10•Getty Images

Thunder rue missed chancesHaving finished their innings with the momentum, Thunder’s hopes nosedived with dropped catches. Rodrigues was first dropped on 0 by Anilka Learoyd at backward point off Shabnim Ismail, who, later on, herself spilt a chance at mid-off.Rodrigues’ luck continued when wicketkeeper Tahlia Wilson’s outstretched glove couldn’t stick a tough chance. With that, Thunder’s hopes sank as their season came to a bitter end.Jonassen in the thick of the actionRain had fallen in the lead up to the match, and Heat captain Jess Jonassen decided to bowl amid overcast skies. It proved to be the right move, with spin on offer for Charli Knott from the get go. Extra bounce troubled the Thunder batters too.Knott tied down opener Chamari Athapathth as the pressure intensified on in-form Georgia Voll, who has been called up to the Australia ODI team for the first time. She was out to continue her breakout season, and had extra motivation against Heat, her former team.Voll looked dangerous, and scored 20 of the total 25 runs in the powerplay. But on the first ball of the fifth over, she chopped on to a wide delivery from seamer Nicola Hancock.Jonassen had held herself back from the attack until the eighth over, and she timed her entrance perfectly with a first-ball wicket to knock Athapaththu over. Jonassen remained in the thick of the action as she pulled off a terrific catch with her outstreched arms at mid-off to dismiss opposite number Phoebe Litchfield, who, after the drinks break, tried to put the foot down.Legspinner Grace Parsons dominated mid-innings, and Thunder’s collapse was complete when Jonassen dismissed Sammy-Jo Johnson in the 14th over.Jonassen, however, did struggle at the death amid an onslaught, as her figures took a hit. But she has led from the front during Heat’s purple patch in the backend of the season in a welcome tonic for her after the disappointment of not making Australia’s squad for the recent T20 World Cup.Taneale Peschel and Hannah Darlington added an unbeaten 64 to take Thunder to 133•Getty Images

Darlington, Peschel combine for record standThunder’s batting throughout the season has relied on Voll and Litchfield firing in the top order. But they couldn’t make significant contributions in the Challenger against Heat, and Thunder’s middle order completely fell apart, as a succession of batters failed to execute aggressive strokes. They appeared set to be humiliated for a total under 100, but Thunder took the power surge in the 16th over, and Peschel effectively threw the bat. She was soon overtaken by Darlington, who targeted the region down the ground in devastating fashion, as they combined to lift Thunder to an unlikely total. But it ultimately proved not nearly enough.

Levy could now green-light "surprise" Tottenham exit for £60m star with Son

It isn’t beyond the realms of possibility that Tottenham could green-light a shock departure this summer, amid the uncertainty surrounding club captain Son Heung-min’s future.

£40m star hints he's prepared to join Tottenham as Spurs speak with his camp

Spurs have been handed a much-needed boost.

Thomas Frank has worked with Son extensively during pre-season, despite his credible links with a move away from N17 before deadline day on September 1, and the Dane continues to play down speculation by suggesting Son is key to his plans.

“I think everyone knows that Son has been one of the best players at Tottenham in the past 10 years. I think he’s been hugely successful from the left wing,” said Frank in a recent press conference.

“I also think he’s had some fantastic games down the middle as a number nine. So it’s important to have players who can play in more than one position, and it’s about having your best players on the pitch and available.

“So the thing about Sonny is that he will always score goals, and it’s just about getting him in those situations.”

However, MLS side Los Angeles FC are lurking in the background, as they offer Son a move to the States with personal terms reportedly close to being agreed (GiveMeSport).

Star defender Romero was regularly linked with a high-profile move to Atletico Madrid all summer too. However, reports of the Argentine’s potential move to La Liga have died down, especially after Diego Simeone’s side completed a deal for David Hancko from Feyenoord.

Right now, Son is their most likely high-profile departure alongside Yves Bissouma, with the South Korea international poised to hold crunch talks over his future once Spurs return from their pre-season tour of Asia (GMS).

However, according to journalist Ben Jacobs, the 33-year-old and Bissouma could even be joined by playmaker James Maddison.

Tottenham could green-light "surprise" James Maddison exit

As per the reporter, speaking on We Are Tottenham TV this week, Tottenham could green-light a “surprise” exit for Maddison if the right offer comes in, even if they’re not actively pushing to sell.

“There could be a slight surprise possibility that James Maddison is a player they would listen to offers for, without necessarily forcing him out of the door,” Jacobs said.

“What happened last season was that Maddison was in and out, he lacked fitness at times and consistency even when he was fit. I don’t think it’s unthinkable that they would listen to offers at the right price, but it’s not a case of trying to force him out or transfer list him, it’s not their plan that he will leave, but there could be consideration to offers at the right price.”

The 28-year-old, despite suffering from his fair share of fitness problems (something he had in common with almost the entire Tottenham squad last season), still managed 12 goals and 11 assists in all competitions and put in some crucial performances.

Tottenham Hotspur'sJamesMaddisonreacts

Letting Maddison leave, especially given their need for more creativity going forward, would be a bold move to say the least.

Any offer would need to be a handsome one, and ex-Spurs scout Bryan King believes Daniel Levy would only entertain bids at a minimum of £50 million, potentially up to £60m.

“They will want at least £50m. I would say anywhere between £50-60million would be accepted,” King told Tottenham News in April.

“Maddison has had some positive moments at Tottenham and got himself into the England team. However, he has also lost his place in the England team due to his inconsistency.”

Liverpool readying blockbuster late move, they think he's their next Salah

Arne Slot has held his press conference ahead of Liverpool’s second Premier League game of the season against Newcastle United, revealing he is happy with the current squad.

“As always, if we think we can improve in a certain position and there’s a player available who can really make us better – which you could see with Giovanni Leoni – then this club has always shown that they can bring these players in, but only if things are right,” said the Dutchman.

Slot also implied the return to form of Federico Chiesa will improve his attacking depth: “I see a totally different Federico now than I did for most of last season.”

Federico Chiesa celebrates for Liverpool

When asked about his upcoming opposition, he highlighted the threat they pose going forward: “The main thing we have to be ready for is their midfielders, their last forwards, their three forwards. I assume Isak isn’t playing, but they still have Gordon as a nine, Elanga, Barnes, Jacob Murphy.”

Slot also revealed that Liverpool had been dealt a blow that will affect their ability to deal with Newcastle’s attack, as their new right-back, Jeremie Frimpong, has picked up an injury that will see him out of action until after the international break.

Liverpool’s eyes are on Newcastle in more ways than just the Premier League clash however, as they plot another bid for one of the Magpies’ star players.

Liverpool readying new Isak bid

Liverpool are preparing another bid for Newcastle United’s Alexander Isak. The Reds had previously bid £110 million plus add-ons for the Swedish striker, but that deal was rejected. Now, as Newcastle edge closer to signing Yoane Wissa and also line up Wolves star Jorgen Strand Larsen, Liverpool are preparing a new bid for Isak.

Reports from Spain have indicated that the new bid will be worth somewhere in the region of £138 million. The club view this massive fee as worthwhile, however, as they think “his arrival would bridge the gap following the imminent end of the Salah era”.

The bid may come in after the two clubs face each other on Monday, as Newcastle are unlikely to sell their best player to a team right before they play them.

From the player’s perspective, it has now got to the point where he is publicly pushing for the move, as he put out a statement before the PFA awards, where he spoke of Newcastle’s broken promises and the benefits of “change” for both parties.

What happens to Ekitike if Liverpool sign Isak?

Whilst Hugo Ekitike had an impressive season last year in the Bundesliga, he arrived in the Premier League as something of an unknown quantity, and when it looked like Liverpool might sign him and Isak, the latter looked the safest option of the two.

Ekitike quickly put any doubts about him to rest with his first two performances for Liverpool. During the Community Shield and the opening Premier League game, he registered two goals and an assist, showing that he’s easily adapted to English football.

This means Slot may be faced with the best predicament a manager could find themselves in, as he has two impressive strikers both competing for game time. While Isak may want to come straight into the first team, he’s been away from team training at Newcastle for a while, meaning it may take a few weeks to get up to speed.

An answer to Slot’s issue may arrive before it becomes too much of a problem. This is because in less than a month’s time, the Champions League group stage will be starting, meaning Liverpool will often be playing two games a week, and there should be ample minutes for the forwards to share.

Everton star just proved he could be their new Barkley & it's not Grealish

After seeing their team lose 1-0 away at Leeds United on the opening weekend of the Premier League, the worry in the air among Everton supporters would have been whether their side would start their new era at the Hill Dickinson Stadium with another bleak defeat.

They didn’t need to be so anxious after all, as their determined Toffees side put the loss in West Yorkshire to one side and delivered a confident performance in front of their adoring home masses that culminated in a 2-0 victory over Brighton and Hove Albion.

Fabian Hurzeler’s Seagulls aren’t pushovers by any stretch of the imagination, but with the quality of Jack Grealish on full display throughout, Everton must have felt content that their first three points of the long campaign were going to be collected.

Grealish's standout display in numbers

The former Aston Villa attacking midfielder had been put through the wringer at Manchester City, but the enigmatic Englishman thankfully let his football do the talking, donning his new Everton blue on his spectacular home debut.

The vibrant Toffees number 18 put it on a plate for Iliman Ndiaye to score the opener after a well-orchestrated counter-attack deep into the first 45 minutes, while his second assist of the day would see the entertaining 29-year-old lay it off for James Garner to thump home the decisive match-clinching strike.

Away from those goal involvements, Grealish – who was deployed down the left wing by Moyes – would attempt five dribbles when bursting forward into space, with one effort also fired at Bart Verbruggen’s busy goal to try and make the win even more emphatic.

The former Villa hero will hope he only gets better with time, too, having previously notched up a sublime six goals and ten assists at the intimidating level during his final swansong campaign in the West Midlands.

He wasn’t the only new signing to leave a fantastic first impression on the hardened Merseyside faithful, however, with one of his midfield teammates also impressing enough to be seen as a potential new Ross Barkley for David Moyes’ men.

Moyes' next Barkley

The Toffees needed to replace Abdoulaye Doucoure effectively this summer, with a real lack of midfielders at the Scotsman’s disposal who can slot into a number 10 role.

Thankfully, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall seamlessly announced himself to the Everton masses as a worthwhile Doucoure replacement against the Seagulls – after also playing in the role behind the main striker against the Whites – with the creative playmaker possessing the potential to be Moyes’ new Barkley down the line.

While he did regularly line up as a traditional midfield option for Leicester City, it’s clear from his career numbers to date that the 26-year-old excels in a further forward position, having accumulated a healthy 35 goals and 41 assists across 306 games. To add context, Barkley has a heftier 66 goals and 52 assists, albeit from a larger stretch of games at 444 clashes.

Dewsbury-Hall would have been hoping he could add to his glittering numbers on Sunday, but despite his best efforts, getting off the mark at his new side would unfortunately evade him.

Indeed, looking at the table above, Dewsbury-Hall was especially unlucky not to join Grealish in picking up an assist, with only three passes being misplaced across his stylish 90-minute outing.

Moyes, watching on from the dug-out, will arguably want more from his new recruit moving forward; however, when trying to catch out the opposition goalkeeper with a shot or two, with Dewsbury-Hall still managing to pick up a reasonable five goals for Chelsea, despite his spell at Stamford Bridge being fraught with bumps.

That will come with time, however, as the Toffees’ number 22 grows more confident in his fresh surroundings.

But, his overall energy and application will have pleased the Scotsman nonetheless, with those qualities, and his ability to drive with the ball in central areas evoking memories of a fresh-faced Barkley at Goodison Park.

Dewsbury-Hall’s positive display wouldn’t go unnoticed by the Liverpool Echo, with journalist Chris Beesley gifting the 29-year-old a high 7/10 post-match rating, stating that he brings “fresh scope” to a role once frequently filled by Doucoure.

Dewsbury-Hall

He did accidentally put Everton in a spot of bother during the game when gifting Brighton a penalty, but it was a largely promising display from a midfielder who has had his fair share of doubters in recent years, much like Grealish.

If Moyes can get the very best out of the midfield pairing across a full season, expect the Toffees to pick up more and more assured wins on their own turf.

'It was a nervous start' – Eintracht Frankfurt star Jonathan Burkardt hails 'incredible' Champions League result as coach tells players to 'enjoy' heroic comeback win against Galatasaray

Eintracht Frankfurt marked their Champions League return with a thumping 5-1 win over Galatasaray, overturning an early Leroy Sane-inspired opener. Jonathan Burkardt struck twice on his debut in the competition, while young starlet Can Uzun and Ansgar Knauff also shone in a pulsating night at Deutsche Bank Park. Coach Dino Toppmoller urged his players to “enjoy” the triumph, calling it a reward for last season’s efforts.

Burkardt inspires Frankfurt comeback

Eintracht striker Burkardt enjoyed a dream Champions League debut, scoring twice to cap a memorable night. His first, a glancing header in first-half stoppage time, put Frankfurt in firm control before he doubled his tally after the break with another well-timed header.

“It was a nervous start. But the way we stepped up from a 1-0 deficit and then won like that with that crowd was incredible. Simply perfect tonight,” Burkardt told after being named player of the match.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesSane returns to Germany with early impact

The match began with a scare for Frankfurt as former Bayern star Sane made an immediate impression on his first return to Germany. Winning possession deep in his own half, the winger surged forward before assisting captain Yunus Akgun for the opener in the eighth minute. The strike made Sane the first player in Champions League history to either score or assist on his debut for four different clubs. His sharp start, however, was ultimately overshadowed by Frankfurt’s ruthless response.

Uzun and Knauff add to Gala’s misery

Nineteen-year-old Turkey international Uzun produced a stunning strike on his Champions League bow, turning sharply inside the box before rifling home to make it 2-1. Ansgar Knauff later added gloss to the scoreline with a composed finish in the 75th minute, completing a remarkable turnaround. Frankfurt’s clinical streak was helped by Gala’s defensive struggles, with Davinson Sanchez and Wilfried Singo both conceding unfortunate own goals in a frantic first half.

Head coach Toppmoller was quick to highlight the significance of Frankfurt’s performance, both on the pitch and for the club’s supporters. “We deserved this competition last season, so the boys should enjoy it a bit. I want to give them that message,” he said post-match, praising the “special atmosphere” created by a crowd of over 30,000 travelling Turkish fans and a stirring home display. The night also held an emotional note as club icon Kevin Trapp was honoured before kick-off, following his summer move to Paris.

The result leaves Frankfurt top of the new 36-team Champions League league phase after the first round of fixtures. They now turn their attention to a daunting away trip to Atletico Madrid on September 30. Galatasaray, meanwhile, must regroup quickly, with Premier League leaders Liverpool set to visit Istanbul in their next European clash. For Burkardt and Frankfurt, the victory marks a historic night that could set the tone for their continental campaign.
