Patrick Roberts more than happy to put club over country

As reported by The Scottish Sun, Patrick Roberts has no regrets about putting Celtic before England as he prepares to the help the Hoops secure a massive domestic treble.

What’s the story?

It’s not often you see loan players show significant loyalty to their temporary homes but Patrick Roberts and Celtic have built up a special relationship over the last 18 months. The young English winger is one fire right now; scoring goals, assisting and generally terrorising defence week after week.

He was part of England U20s’ plans for the World Cup at that age level in South Korea but the 20 year old decided to stay at the Hoops and put the chance to secure the Scottish Cup first, a decision he doesn’t regret in the slightest.

As quoted by The Scottish Sun, Roberts said:

“I made a decision and I’m proud of that decision. I’ve got a massive final to play. There’s an incentive for all of us to go all the way. To win the treble at this massive club would be big for me and hopefully we can do that.

“It’s a massive trophy to be a part of and a big one in Scottish football. So it’s important for all the players, not just me, to go into it 100 per cent and we’ll do that.”

Some Celtic fans still hold a glimmer of hope the somehow he will still be a Hoops player next season but the reality is likely that he’ll return to his parent club Manchester City.

The winger is currently rated at £4.25m on Transfermarkt, a fee that is likely within Celtic’s reach, but the question is whether Pep Guardiola actually wants to sell one of his bright prospects.

Whether he has a long-term future at City remains to be seen but at least he travels back to the English Premier League knowing that whatever happens, he has a home in Glasgow.

Van Dijk sends Liverpool fans into ruptures over teasing tweet

Liverpool fans have had a rough ride when it comes to summer business this week. Just days ago it looked as is a deal for Southampton captain Virgil van Dijk was almost certain and would be announced quicker than you could say ‘club statement.’

However, following allegations of illegal behaviour by the Saints and a potential investigation from the Premier League and on Wednesday the club released a statement that no one expected.

The message coming out of Anfield was an apologetic one aimed at the south coast club and it’s fans, whilst also claiming that their interest in the Dutch international was over.

The 25-year-old missed half of the season with an ankle injury picked up thanks to a reckless Jamie Vardy challenge just after the turn of the year, however, his form up to the injury was enough to warrant reports of a £60m move this summer.

Whilst the saga continued to whirl around him the former Celtic man decided to tease Reds fans with a cryptic message on Twitter…

And it didn’t take long for fans on Merseyside to beg the Dutchman to press on with the move…

Everton fans worried about first five games of Premier League season

Everton supporters were arguably the most worried when the Premier League calendar was announced on Wednesday.

The new season is still eight weeks away, but fans up and down the country would have put various dates in their diary when the fixtures were revealed.

Ronald Koeman’s side have learned that they will take on Stoke City, Manchester City, Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United in August and September.

To make matters worse, the fixtures against City, Chelsea and United will all be played away from home.

The Toffees finished last season in seventh place and will play Europa  League football in the upcoming campaign, but considering their tough start, it may be difficult to hit the ground running in the top flight.

Everton are determined to push themselves towards the top four over the coming seasons, so they would have hoped for a more favourable start.

Plenty of supporters are also concerned about the schedule, with some predicting that the team are certain to drop significant points across the first two months.

Three reasons Southampton should keep hold of Lazio target Jordy Clasie

According to reports on Italian website Il Messaggero, Serie A side Lazio are targeting a move for Southampton midfielder Jordy Clasie this summer as a potential replacement for Lucas Biglia, if the Argentine joins AC Milan.

The Dutchman moved to St Mary’s two years ago following the arrival of Ronald Koeman as manager, but he has struggled to cement his spot in the first team since then, often finding himself on the substitutes’ bench with the likes of Victor Wanyama, Oriol Romeu and Steven Davis preferred in the middle of the park.

Those opportunities were even less frequent when Koeman left for Everton last year and Claude Puel took the reins, with Clasie featuring in just 16 Premier League matches last term.

While he has failed to become a regular, the 25-year-old has certainly shown some glimpses that he could be a success in the English top flight, and the Netherlands international perhaps deserves another chance to stake his claim for a place in the team next season.

Here are three reasons Southampton should keep hold of Clasie…

New manager

Saints are still looking to appoint Claude Puel’s successor after sacking the Frenchman earlier this month, and it would surely make sense to keep hold of Clasie at least until the new man comes in and makes his own decisions on the squad.

With Dutchman Frank de Boer one of the names in the frame for the job, the 25-year-old midfielder could still have a great opportunity to salvage his career with the south coast outfit and become a key player next season.

Romeu’s midfield partner

In the second half of last season, Southampton switched from the 4-4-2 diamond formation back to the 4-2-3-1 system that had been so successful in the past three seasons, and it meant that Oriol Romeu needed a central midfield partner.

While club captain Steven Davis filled in there, it was clear that an energetic player who can be box-to-box is what needed, and the Northern Irishman fails to provide that.

Clasie certainly has all of the ingredients to be a bulldog style player in the middle of the park, but he will need to improve his stamina if he is to fill that role in the future.

Goal threat

While Clasie has only scored two goals in two seasons at St Mary’s, they have both been brilliant strikes from outside the penalty area – against Arsenal in the League Cup and then West Bromwich Albion in the Premier League this season.

While the likes of Steven Davis, James Ward-Prowse, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Dusan Tadic have struggled to find the target with shots from range, their Dutch midfield teammate has shown that he has a lethal shot on him, and that could be a useful weapon next season.

In Focus: Carvalho could be a capable replacement if Dier leaves Spurs

As reported by A Bola, Tottenham Hotspur are lining up a move for Sporting Lisbon star William Carvalho this summer.

What’s the story?

Spurs have not yet made a major move in the transfer window, after a successful season last term Mauricio Pochettino doesn’t need to change the formula of his starting eleven too much.

However, there’s always the possibility they could lose one or two key stars and so it’s prudent they continue to track targets they feel can come in and shine.

A Bola report that one player they’re keeping tabs on is William Carvalho. The outlet reckons that’s because they could lose Eric Dier to Manchester United this summer.

If they do bid for the midfielder, Sporting would not accept less than £26.25m, according to the report.

Who is he?

Carvalho may not be a household name to British football fans but he’s regular fixture for both Sporting Lisbon and the Portugal national team.

Making over 150 appearances for Sporting since 2013, he’s a player with fantastic experience of top-flight football and has gained plaudits for his defensive capabilities in the middle of the park, also possessing the ability to bring the ball into the final third with the ball at his feet. He was most recently seen in action for Portugal finishing third in the Confederations Cup.

His hybrid style could prove ideal for Spurs, especially if they do end up losing the likes of Eric Dier this summer.

Everton are absolutely right to wash their hands of Ross Barkley

Ronald Koeman’s handling of the Ross Barkley situation has been perfect, as no one player is bigger than the club and his determination to leave has made him expendable.

Barkley remains a Goodison Park player for now but with Tottenham sniffing around, Chelsea have surprisingly emerged as a potential destination for the 23-year-old midfielder.

The Everton youth product was one of Europe’s most highly coveted youngsters in 2014 and decided to stay with the Toffees, but he is now guaranteed to leave with just one year remaining on his contract.

Although the Chelsea interest is genuinely shocking and likely derived from a growing need to meet the home-grown Champions League quota, the Englishman is still very talented and would be a boost to any elite side, but he isn’t a likely starter for any of the Premier League’s top six.

The midfielder, who scored six goals and assisted nine more last season, has been capped by England 22 times and burst onto the scene in the 2013-14 season for the Toffees, who finished fifth that season.

Big things were expected of Barkley after his debut season, but he struggled to elevate both his game and the club’s in the three ensuing seasons. And that’s why Everton are right to wash their hands of him, despite his obvious talent.

The most interesting thing of Barkley’s situation is that no clubs have had anything more than vague interest in the midfielder. The thought that there would be no real bids if Everton decided to sell Barkley was laughable three years ago.

A very talented player, and especially an English one, goes for a pretty penny these days and doesn’t come around very often, but Barkley for some reason isn’t desirable.

He likely believes that he is talented enough to play for a club bigger than Everton, but it is extremely unlikely that he would be able to start for one of England’s top six clubs and that is what the 23-year old needs to do at this point in his career.

Perhaps he should look abroad for a chance to live up to his talent and truly thrive as an attacking midfielder.

Gabriel Jesus ties former-Man United player’s Premier League record

Gabriel Jesus tied a long-standing Premier League record during Manchester City’s 2-0 win at Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday.

The Brazilian arrived at the Etihad in January and made an immediate impact by scoring seven goals and recording four assists in his first 10 Premier League games either side of a lengthy layoff with injury.

City’s attack that also boasts the likes of Sergio Aguero, David Silva, Kevin De Bruyne and Leroy Sane is the main reason why Pep Guardiola’s side are the favourites to win the Premier League this season.

Jesus played the full 90 minutes at the Amex Stadium on Saturday evening and City’s win means that the Brazilian has now won eight of his 11 Premier League appearances, drawing the other three.

The significance of this?  Well, in the history of the Premier League, former-Manchester United midfielder Simon Davies holds the record for the most appearances without suffering a single defeat in their entire English top flight career.

Of course, Davies didn’t play very often at all.  Coming through the United youth system and part of the Class of ’92 that won the 1992 FA Youth Cup in a team that included the likes of David Beckham, Gary Neville and Nicky Butt – Davies made only 11 Premier League appearances before leaving for Luton Town in 1997.

Those 11 appearances, of which only four were in the starting line-up resulted in seven wins and four draws.

For our younger audience who may not be so familiar with Manchester United’s Simon Davies.  After leaving the club for Luton Town, he later played for Macclesfield Town, Rochdale, Bangor City, Total Network Solutions, Rhyl, Chester City and Airbus UK.  Now you recall who he is, right?

He also scored in United’s 4-0 thrashing of Galatasaray in their 1994-95 Champions League campaign.

The good news for Davies is that Gabriel Jesus has another 37 games this season to suffer defeat and perhaps a few more years in the Premier League – so the Brazilian may well hand the record back to the former-Wales international (one cap).

Tottenham Hotspur profit from Sigurdsson move to Everton, fans react

Everton and Swansea City were not the only clubs financially affected by Gylfi Sigurdsson’s move to Goodison Park on Wednesday.

Tottenham Hotspur were also involved, albeit not directly, due to the negotiations made when they sold the midfielder to Swansea three years ago.

According to the London Evening Standard, the North London outfit have pocketed £4.5m from Sigurdsson’s switch to Everton, as they agreed a 10% sell-on clause with the Swans in 2014.

It is believed that Everton splashed £45m on signing the Iceland international, who has become their eighth capture in the summer window.

If Spurs have gained some extra cash, it will prove to be good business as they have now pocketed £11.3m for Sigurdsson when they sold him after a two-year spell.

It has been a very quiet window for Tottenham as they are yet to bring in any new signings, and time is ticking given that just two weeks remain before the window shuts.

News about a possible windfall from the Sigurdsson deal has got fans talking on Twitter.

Unanswered questions about Liverpool’s ability to turn optimism into results

After a transfer window which has left Liverpool celebrating an exciting, if cautious, optimism reality will soon start to hit. The international break will give way to a crunch double-header this weekend and in midweek as Jurgen Klopp’s Reds have to build on a successful transfer window and actually turn that into performances on the pitch.

On Saturday afternoon, the Premier League returns with an early kick-off when Liverpool travel to Manchester City, before Anfield welcomes back Champions League football with the arrival of Sevilla in a repeat of the 2016 Europa League final.

They are two big games and would be huge at any time of the year. But given they’re coming now, just after the transfer window and on the back of an international break, they start to take on a new dimension.

Despite signing Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain on deadline day to add to the squad along with Andrew Robertson, Dominic Solanke and Mohamed Salah, it’s hard to escape the fact that Liverpool are still missing in two areas they spent the summer trying to strengthen. Naby Keita will arrive in a year’s time, meaning he won’t be any use to Klopp this season, and looking back at the the Virgil van Dijk saga only seems to underscore how Liverpool didn’t actually manage to sign a centre-back: a potential problem for a side who are gaining a growing reputation for being a soft touch at the back, and who are still reliant on Dejan Lovren to partner Joel Matip.

Time will tell if these failures will be the difference between a good season, a poor one, or something in between.

But in the more immediate future, it will be interesting to see just what Jurgen Klopp has in mind for his side, which now looks to be much more complete, at least in midfield and attack. He now has a squad which seems to have a functional-looking feel to it, where the midfield three are energetic and committed, and the front three are pacey and skillful. That makes Liverpool look set-up perfectly to overcome teams on the counter-attack, just as they did to Arsenal in their last game, but where does that leave room for the slower creativity of Philippe Coutinho?

Keeping hold of the Brazilian despite being offered crazy money was clearly a sign of intent from the club, as well as a very practical thing to do. Selling your best player just because Barcelona come knocking isn’t necessarily something that five-time European champions usually do, but in this case it seemed like turning down a fortune for a player who doesn’t necessarily seem to fit into the team. With a midfield three seemingly geared to hassle the opposition and transition the team onto the counter, and the front three filled with pace, Coutinho is something of an outlier, not obviously fitting into either role.

And yet, he is still one of the side’s best players, and a man who can make a difference in tight games, especially in the sorts of games against lower-in-the-table opposition where the Reds dropped points last season due to a lack of creativity – though admittedly, that was often with Coutinho in the side. With both Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah, though, he will be able to play with runners ahead of him, and that could make a difference.

But while it’s clear that the Brazilian will be the major talking point around the club over the next few games, there’s a danger that this will overshadow what is a genuine issue for Klopp ahead of two matches against sides who are notoriously efficient in possession, and who will provide two different tests of Liverpool’s defence.

Despite City’s creativity in midfield, and their obvious ability to break teams down from open play, they are also particularly devastating on the counter-attack, an area where Liverpool’s defence can often look vulnerable. Against the top six clubs, it’s Klopp’s side who seem perfectly suited to springing counters on the teams who like to play in possession, but that doesn’t mean they can’t be hit going the other way as well.

In midweek against Sevilla, the Spaniards are unlikely to utilise the counter quite so much. Last season, they scored only once in La Liga on the counter-attack, and even though they have changed manager this summer, replacing Jorge Sampaoli with Eduardo Berizzo, the former Celta Vigo manager, that seems unlikely to change too much. Last season, Celta scored only once on the counter, too, with the vast majority of their goals also coming from open play.

It will be interesting to see how Liverpool’s defence copes with these two sides.

And then there’s the unknown, which is perhaps the most difficult to read. How will Liverpool come back from the international break? After breaks – and especially early-season ones, when teams haven’t quite settled into the rhythm of a campaign – teams always come back from their week away not knowing just how well they’ll do when they play a match again.

The first games back are always strange in that regard: players return from all over the world and you don’t know whether they’ll just pick up where they left off, hit the ground running or have to feel their way back into the new run of games. Last time out, Liverpool enjoyed a massive high after beating Arsenal, but will the break mean their form’s worn off before the trip to Manchester on Saturday?

There’s an optimism and an excitement around the club for the moment, and one that’s justified after good results against Arsenal and Hoffenheim as well as a win over Crystal Palace, in the type of game the Reds would probably have drawn last year. But there are still quite a number of questions which remain unanswered about Liverpool. That optimism could break over the next few games, but if it doesn’t, they could be set for a few feel-good months to build momentum for the rest of the season.

Everton fans beginning to turn on Ronald Koeman after Atalanta defeat

Everton suffered their third successive defeat on Thursday night as they were beaten 3-0 by Atalanta in their opening Europa League group match, and Toffees fans are beginning to turn on manager Ronald Koeman with the Dutchman likely to be under pressure if the poor results continue.

The Merseyside outfit would have felt before the game that they had a good chance of advancing through to the group stages and potentially even winning the competition, but they will have to perform much better than they did in Italy if they are to have any chance of doing that.

The miserable showing came off the back of 2-0 and 3-0 defeats to Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur respectively in the Premier League, and Koeman’s side are seemingly struggling to gel after a number of new signings arrived during the summer transfer window.

A lack of goals, pace, urgency and creativity are some of the biggest problems throughout the team right now, and things certainly aren’t going to get any easier when they face Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Everton supporters were quick to have their say on their boss via social media after the latest loss, with some desrcribing him as “clueless” and others saying they ‘miss David Moyes’.
