Ireland submit plans for more ODIs

Ireland would play 12 to 15 one-day internationals a year if the ICC approves their ambitious proposals to be given further challenges

Ger Siggins15-Apr-2012Ireland would play 12 to 15 one-day internationals a year if the ICC approves their ambitious proposals to be given further challenges to take recognition of their rising standards.Warren Deutrom, the chief executive, told the Cricket Ireland annual meeting that the ICC has received its submission and it will be go before the ICC board meeting in June for final approval. Under the proposals, ICC will help to identify gaps in the existing Future Tours Programme where Ireland can be accommodated for ODIs.Cricket Ireland has made the case that it has rapidly outgrown its fellow associates and needs further challenges. The senior side, coached by Phil Simmons, has won 30 of its last 33 games against associate members of ICC. And in recent years Ireland has also beaten Pakistan, Zimbabwe, Bangladesh, West Indies and England.Deutrom told the meeting that he hoped ICC would adopt the bulk of the Woolf Report, which he described as “better than our wildest dreams” and potentially the key moment in the history of the game’s ambition to be a world sport. While Ireland gets funding from ICC, Deutrom pointed to the disparity between its $685,000 grant compared to the $7-9million received by full members, who are also guaranteed participation in ICC tournaments and the FTP.”Our battle is to convince ICC to fund cricket nations on the basis of merit and need, not of entitlement,” Deutrom said. The newly-announced plan also seeks ICC funding for an ambitious academy structure which will see the best young talent nurtured in both the north and south of the island. While at times over the past decade the senior side has relied on naturalised players, the Irish system has produced some startlingly good players, with three – Ed Joyce, Eoin Morgan and Boyd Rankin – playing for England at various levels and new stars such as George Dockrell and Paul Stirling attracting the covetous ECB.There are currently ten Irishmen contracted to English counties – which is more than Pakistan and West Indies put together when you discount the fly-in fly-out Twenty20 players. The third item on Deutrom’s shopping list is ICC’s assistance in progressing the non-existent domestic first-class structure. At present the game is based on club leagues in three unions, based around Dublin, Derry and Belfast. The ambitious plan is to form these districts into an inter-provincial structure similar to the successful Irish rugby provinces. This last point is seen as crucial for the development of the game and helping Ireland to continue to produce top players. The AGM in Dundalk also elected Jimmy Joyce of Merrion as president for 2012-13. Joyce is father of five Irish internationals, including Ed, currently at Sussex, and Ireland women’s captain Isobel. The respected veteran journalist Robin Walsh was named as president-elect.

Fred Titmus dies aged 78

Fred Titmus, the former Middlesex and England allrounder, has died at the age of 78 following a long illness

ESPNcricinfo staff23-Mar-2011Fred Titmus, the former Middlesex and England allrounder, has died at the age of 78 following a long illness.Titmus enjoyed one of the most remarkable careers of any Middlesex player. When he made his first-class debut in 1949 at the age of 16 years and 213 days, he was the youngest-ever Middlesex cricketer at the time. When he made his final appearance in 1982, he had established a record span of 33 seasons, and at 50 years and 276 days was the fourth-oldest Middlesex player, and the oldest to appear for the county at Lord’s.His overall first-class record was a testament both to his longevity and his class. He made 21,588 runs at 23.11, and claimed 2830 wickets at 22.37 in 792 appearances, to establish himself as one of English cricket’s finest allrounders. He was also on the books of Watford Football Club.Despite competing with a number of fine spinners including David Allen, Ray Illingworth and John Mortimore, Titmus played in 53 Tests between 1955 and 1975, claiming 153 wickets at 32.22, including a best of 7 for 79 against Australia at Sydney in 1962-63. His highest score of 84 not out came the following year against India in Mumbai. He even came back after a horrific boating accident in the Caribbean in 1967-68, when he caught his foot in the propeller and lost four toes. He was back in action for Middlesex by May 1968 and finished the season with 111 wickets, and also topped his county’s batting averages with 846 runs at 25.63. His final first-class appearance came against Surrey in 1982. Visiting the Middlesex dressing room for a cup of coffee, captain Mike Brearley decided an extra spinner was needed and thrust him into action. Sure enough, he took 3 for 43 to set up a 58-run victory. His artistry as a slow and flighty bowler contrasted with a highly developed practical streak that made him a fine judge of a player. “Too intelligent for his ability,” was his appraisal of one; of another, a youngster who scored a dashing hundred against Middlesex at Lord’s, he commented: “I like to see someone make a bad ‘undred before I make my mind up.” He made three tours of Australia, and justified his selection each time. But his favourite memory of the country, he claimed, was “The sight of a ground emptying an hour before the close of play.””Fred Titmus was my mentor, advisor and coach,” wrote the former Middlesex bowler and Guardian cricket correspondent, Mike Selvey, in a tribute last year. “Conversation with him – and there were many – was a masters-level cricketing education, his great skill in simplifying things (“only people make a simple game complicated”), coupled with an ability to implant ideas so cleverly that you believed they were yours in the first place.””Fred will be deeply missed by all those who played with him and by all those who were fortunate enough to have seen him performing for Middlesex and England,” read a statement from his county. “All of our thoughts and best wishes are with his wife Stephanie and family.”David Collier, the ECB chief executive, said: “Fred was simply a master of the art of slow bowling and a very popular figure on both the county and international circuit. He will be much missed and we send condolences to his many friends within the game and his family.”

Hampshire paid the penalty for allowing Ian Blackwell a comfortable start as
his innings of 83 tilted an evenly-balanced contest in Durham’s favour at the
Riverside.Blackwell hit the fourth ball he faced over midwicket for six as he blazed to
36 off 21 balls, and he had Durham’s deficit down to 73 when he was out two
overs from the close.A powerful pull off Kabir Ali went straight to Jimmy Adams, who clung onto a
juggling catch at square leg as Durham ended the day on 284 for 5. Blackwell settled down after surviving a return chance on 36 to 18-year-old Danny Briggs, who had removed both openers with his left-arm spin and was left on for 23 overs. He took some heavy punishment in his last two overs as his England Under-19
colleague Ben Stokes drove him for a straight six and Blackwell followed up with
a huge one over square leg. When Durham lost Dale Benkenstein in the over before tea they had slipped from 108 without loss to 146 for 3 in reply to 345.But Blackwell’s 50 stand with Will Smith came up in 38 balls, even though the
Durham skipper continued to look out of touch. He was dropped twice in the slips by Chris Benham and Adams before Sean Ervine pinned him lbw for 28.With Kabir Ali and left-armer James Tomlinson finding the bright, chilly
conditions unsuited to swing, they failed to trouble the Durham openers. Briggs made the breakthrough when he turned one past Kyle Coetzer’s defensive push with the Scot on 47, but the spinner looked fortunate to gain an lbw verdict against Michael Di Venuto (71).Benkenstein opened up confidently with two cuts for four off Briggs but fell for 10 when he tried to flip a short ball from Griffiths behind square and got a bottom edge into his stumps.
Blackwell throttled back after being dropped, reaching 50 off 55 balls, while Stokes took seven overs to get off the mark but then struck the ball powerfully and remained unbeaten on 28.When Hampshire resumed on 298 for 8 in the morning it took only two overs
for Mitch Claydon to capture the wicket of Kabir, who was caught down the leg
side by Phil Mustard. But the final pair were allowed to add 36 as Briggs pulled Claydon for two
fours and a six in one over on his way to 28 before Liam Plunkett had him caught
behind to finish with 4 for 103.

Jorginho's outspoken agent talks up Serie A return for Arsenal midfielder (again) as contract ticks down

Jorginho's agent has drummed up a potential Serie A return with his Arsenal contract set to expire this summer.

  • Jorginho's contract expires in June
  • Has an option to extend stay at Arsenal
  • But a return to Serie A looks likely
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

The 32-year-old, who made a high-profile move from Chelsea to Arsenal last year, has established himself as an important figure in the Gunners' midfield. Notably, he was handed the captain's armband by Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta in the absence of regular skipper Martin Odegaard.

While Jorginho holds an option to prolong his tenure with Arsenal for another season, uncertainties loom over his future at the Emirates. His agent, Joao Santos, shed light on the possibility of a Serie A comeback, mentioning Lazio as a favourable destination, with Juventus, AC Milan, Inter and former club Napoli also in contention.

    WHAT JOAO SANTOS SAID

Speaking to in Italy, Santos said: "He’d suit Lazio more, for the presence of coach Sarri who already knows his characteristics very well, but also Juve who have a great director of sport like Cristiano Giuntoli, who he spent many years with at Napoli. I would not rule out a return to Napoli with new coach Calzona, who used to work with Sarri before that.”

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Jorginho's Premier League journey commenced in the summer of 2018 when he followed former Napoli manager Maurizio Sarri to Chelsea in a €57 million (£48.7m) deal. Hence it would not be surprising if he ended up reuniting with the Italian manager who has had a tough time this campaign with Lazio. While a move to Roma appears unlikely, Santos – who spoke about a possible Serie A move last year for the 32-year-old – has the utmost respect for Milan and Inter.

“I don’t think Roma would be likely, because there has never been any contact with them, but when it comes to their strength and tradition, everyone would love to play for Milan and Inter,” he added.

Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou is thrilled with his sides' 'tremendous resilience' as they sit atop the Premier League table

Spurs impressing under PostecoglouSit top of Premier League and unbeatenCoach still sees room for improvementWHAT HAPPENED?

The Australian has spearheaded a fantastic turnaround since taking over as Tottenham coach in the summer. After eight matches, his side sit top of the table – ahead of Arsenal on goals scored – and remain unbeaten in the league.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesTHE BIGGER PICTURE

After finishing eighth in the Premier League last season, Spurs have managed their climb to the peak of the table despite losing star striker Harry Kane to Bayern Munich before the current campaign kicked off.

Captain Son Heung-min along with summer signings James Maddison, Micky van de Ven and Pedro Porro have helped cover for the loss of the talisman and strengthen Postecoglou's side and he is happy with their progress.

WHAT THEY SAID or DID YOU KNOW? (delete as applicable)

However, he says there is still room for improvement, particularly in attack, as he told : "When you talk about a transformation, we have a lot of new players in, a new manager, a new way of playing, that kind of shift is always going to take some time. To be honest, that part our game is still the area that has the most improvement in it, the attacking side of our game – we can be even more aggressive in the way we play and create even more opportunities.

"But I would balance that up in the tremendous resilience we've shown and the defensive solidity we've had considering we've had a totally new back line and a new midfield set-up. So it's kind of a balancing act these things of wanting to be this kind of team, but also understanding you have to build some other aspects of the side.

"At the moment we are juggling that pretty well, but I still think when we become the team I want us to become, that is the area we still have the most improving to do in – the attacking areas."

Gilberto in 20.7 seconds! Where are the Arsenal team that helped make Champions League history at PSV now?

The Gunners didn't waste any time getting off the mark when they travelled to Eindhoven in 2002, and will be hoping for a similar result on Thursday

It was a moment that saw Gilberto Silva write his name into the Champions League history books.

When Arsenal took on PSV on September 25, 2002, Arsene Wenger’s side were expecting a tough night against the Dutch outfit. But from the moment Gilberto struck after just 20.7 seconds, the Gunners were in cruise control.

They went on to win 4-0 at the PSV Stadion, with Gilberto’s volley from Thierry Henry’s cross breaking the previous record for the fastest-ever Champions League goal, which had been set by Alessandro Del Piero for Juventus against Manchester United.

The Brazilian’s record has gone on to be beaten since, but it’s still a moment he cherishes when he looks back on his long and illustrious career.

“It was a very happy moment,” he said. “When I knew it was the fastest goal in the competition’s history, I was amazed by the news. After, it was broken and it broke my heart a little bit!”

So now, 20 years on, where are the Arsenal starting XI that featured in that historic match? GOAL takes a look..

    David Seaman

A true Arsenal legend, Seaman won eight major trophies with the Gunners and made 564 appearances before leaving for Manchester City in 2003.

He called time on his playing days soon after and there haven’t been many TV shows that Seaman hasn’t popped up on since.

From Dancing on Ice to ‘Carp fishing with Seaman and Gazza’, the 59-year-old has done them all.

Still one of the nation’s favourite sporting personalities, Seaman often does football pundit work and also spends time working with goalkeepers at the Arsenal academy.

What a player! An absolute warrior on the football field, Lauren is still revered at Arsenal to this day.

He won two Premier League titles during his time in north London and was a key figure in the legendary 2003-04 Invincibles side.

After leaving Arsenal, he had spells with Portsmouth and Cordoba before retiring in 2010.

He now represents Arsenal as a club ambassador and works as a football pundit on Spanish TV. Lauren also has a role working as a FIFA technical expert for talent development within African football.

    Sol Campbell

Former Spurs star Campbell was a colossus for Arsenal after he crossed the north London divide in 2002.

The ideal replacement for Tony Adams, who was coming to the end of his career, Campbell slotted seamlessly into the back four and helped Arsene Wenger’s side win both the Premier League and the FA Cup in his first season.

Campbell was then the bedrock of the defence for the Invincibles campaign and formed an exceptional partnership with Kolo Toure.

In all, he made 146 appearances in the Premier League for Arsenal before leaving for Portsmouth in 2006.

He has had spells in management since hanging up his boots, with Macclesfield Town and most recently Southend United.

Benefited from losing the toss – du Plessis

Rising Pune Supergiants batsman Faf du Plessis has said losing the toss worked in his side’s favour, by allowing them to assess conditions on an atypical Wankhede pitch. Mumbai Indians chose to bat and were soon reduced to 68 for 7 on a seaming track, paving the way for Supergiants’ nine-wicket win.”Everyone rocked up thinking it was going to be a 200-plus wicket. What we get at Wankhede is lots of runs,” du Plessis said. “It was completely the opposite, it was a slow wicket. A good thing for us that we lost the toss. It gave us an idea how we could pace our innings.”Du Plessis, who shared a 78-run stand with Ajinkya Rahane, last opened the batting two years ago in any form, a position he said he preferred.”Nice to have someone who can score boundaries without taking risks. I found it a bit harder tonight and tried to make Rahane face as many balls. Key for us was not to lose any wicket, the only way they were going to win the game was if they got three-four wickets in the first six overs.”The last time I opened was two-three years ago for Chennai, so it was something I really enjoyed. The make-up of our side, there are a lot of quality middle-order batsmen, and the coach and captain feel that I am best suited at the top. Anywhere they put me from 1-5, I’m someone who has started growing my game from different positions. Nice to get a crack at the top. It’s a place I’d choose if I probably could.”

Zimbabwe dealt Sibanda injury scare

Zimbabwe batsman Vusi Sibanda suffered an injury to his right ankle during a warm-up session on Friday, but is likely to recover in time to make the squad for the upcoming home series against India according to the coach Dav Whatmore

ESPNcricinfo staff20-Jun-2015Zimbabwe batsman Vusi Sibanda suffered an injury to his right ankle during a warm-up session on Friday, but is likely to recover in time for the upcoming home series against India according to the coach Dav Whatmore. The injury occurred at the Harare Sports Club during training when a back-pedaling Sibanda rolled over his right ankle after accidentally stepping on team analyst Stanley Chioza’s foot. Sibanda was immediately taken for an x-ray scan and later given a crutch, but Whatmore played down the incident as a “minor accident” and said that the player “should be okay in a week”.”I took Vusi for an x-ray, ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging scans and the results are expected this afternoon,” Anesu Mupotaringa, the team physiotherapist, said. “He is currently in pain and I have given him a crutch to avoid pressure on the ankle. I also gave him medication to help with the pain and swelling, and he will receive treatment twice daily to speed up recovery with the hope of him being fit for the India tour.”Sibanda has played 154 international matches for Zimbabwe since making his debut in 2003. He was left out of the 2015 World Cup squad, but returned to the side for Zimbabwe’s historic tour of Pakistan last month.Zimbabwe will host India for three ODIs and two Twenty20 internationals, starting July 10 in Harare.
