WI aim to compete on even footing

West Indies will begin their third tour of India in as many years with a five-match ODI series, a format they like a little more than Tests

Agarkar: WI batting can cover for Gayle’s absence

Match factsOctober 8, 2014
Start time 1430 local (0900 GMT)Can West Indies find a place in the XI for Marlon Samuels?•BCCI

Big pictureOnce was West Indies. Countries wanted to host them every year, much to their own batsmen’s chagrin. Almost every batsman in the 1980s went through hell more often than he wanted to because West Indies were the box-office. Everybody wanted to watch them. Money, attention, competition, they took it wherever they went. This India tour of theirs is now the third in the last four seasons. The hosts would have killed for this schedule in the 1980s. Now it’s just a yawn. There is no build-up or anticipation to the tour whatsoever. The Champions League Twenty20 drew more selling effort from the stakeholders. It’s not all down to the opposition but West Indies have contributed to this indifference. The last time they were here they lost two Tests in little over five days. Some of their big stars looked the least interested in playing international cricket and it was ugly watching them play without any application. This tour starts with a format they like a little more than the Tests. Five ODIs are their first call of duty, but they have already lost two practice matches to an India A team. Two of their big stars – Chris Gayle and Sunil Narine – are missing but three others were away playing Champions League so that should give them hope. Dwayne Smith, captain Dwayne Bravo and Andre Russell can be explosive, but they are up against what is recognised as the best ODI team by the ICC, in its home conditions, with its spinners and ODI batsmen on a high after thumping England in England. This will be a big test of West Indies’ batsmen, especially in the middle overs, when the India spinners will apply the chokehold. That is where England struggled against India. That is also where West Indies are likely to struggle. Even if they can manage to not lose wickets to and keep scoring at a fair pace against spinners, they will merely bring the matches to even terms.Form guideIndia LWWWW (Completed matches, most recent first)
West Indies WWWLLWatch out forAjinkya Rahane finally managed to score his first ODI century when he helped India win the series in England. It was his first break from good-looking but middling innings in the 50-over format, and it came at the top of the order, thanks to the absence of the injured Rohit Sharma. Rohit is going to miss this series too, which gives Rahane another shot at opening the innings. This will be the last ODI series India play before they go to Australia for a triangular series and the World Cup. The opening combination is one issue they will want to resolve by the end of this series. One of the ways West Indies can get the better of India is early wickets. In Ravi Rampaul they have one man who has done that before. His average of 23 and strike rate of 24.6 against India are a significant improvement on his career stats. This being the start of a new season, West Indies will hope Rampaul is fit and ready to go.Team newsIndia have rested R Ashwin and brought Kuldeep Yadav into the squad. Either Kuldeep or Amit Mishra should replace Ashwin in the XI.India (likely): 1 Ajinkya Rahane, 2 Shikhar Dhawan, 3 Virat Kohli, 4 Ambati Rayudu, 5 Suresh Raina, 6 MS Dhoni (capt & wk), 7 Ravindra Jadeja, 8 Bhuvneshwar Kumar, 9 Amit Mishra/Kuldeep Yadav, 10 Mohit Sharma, 11 Mohammed ShamiWest Indies have recalled Marlon Samuels, and it will be interesting to see if they can make space for him in the XI. Both Leon Johnson and Jermaine Blackwood have struggled in the tour games so it might make sense to slot Dwayne Smith in for Chris Gayle. Sulieman Benn should come in for Sunil Narine.West Indies (likely): 1 Lendl Simmons, 2 Dwayne Smith, 3 Darren Bravo, 4 D Ramdin (wk), 5 and 6 Two out of Marlon Samuels/ Kieron Pollard/ Darren Sammy, 7 Dwayne Bravo (capt.), 8 Jason Holder, 9 Sulieman Benn, 10 Ravi Rampaul, 11 Kemar RoachPitch and weatherThe last international Kochi hosted was between the same two teams, and back then West Indies folded against spin. The forecast, though, is not great, with scattered thunderstoms and a 50% chance of rain.Stats and trivia West Indies are one of the three teams that have won more ODIs than they have lost against India in India. Their 20-17 ascendance in bilateral series, however, could be under fire. Indian spinners have taken 72 wickets against West Indies in the last five years. Over the same period West Indies have not lost even 50 wickets to spinners from any other team. Among teams that have played at least 10 matches against West Indies in this period, only Pakistan’s spinners have a better average (23.53) and economy rate (3.66) against them than India’s 28.23 and 4.48. Quotes”We were positive even without him that we can play well against India and beat India. That’s the attitude we have got to adapt.”
“We want to see the bigger picture here. We want to do a few things because you don’t want to go to Australia and say we should have done this, we should have done that. We will see what our cricketers can offer … but it is important to start well and look to win the series.”

Australia want their own Indian soil

Cricket Australia has come up with a novel plan to improve the team’s performance on Indian soil: import some of their own

Brydon Coverdale04-Jun-2014Cricket Australia has come up with a novel plan to improve the team’s performance on Indian soil: import some of their own. Their 4-0 thrashing in India last year continued a recent trend of failures in sub-continental conditions and since they last toured Bangladesh in 2006, Australia have played 13 Tests in Asia for only one win, when they defeated Sri Lanka in Galle in 2011.Their home clean-sweep in the Ashes helped propel Michael Clarke’s men back up to No.1 in the Test rankings but staying there will require finding ways to win away from home. To that end, Cricket Australia intends to import soil from India and install Asian-style practice pitches at the National Cricket Centre in Brisbane, perhaps in the middle of a greyhound track nearby.Australia’s next Test series is in the UAE against Pakistan later this year and against an attack likely to include challenging spinners such as Saeed Ajmal, the batsmen will hardly have an easy time of it. Their struggles in turning conditions in Bangladesh for the World T20 earlier this year only highlighted the issue of handling quality spin.”Our toughest challenge the last few years has been having success away from home,” Clarke told reporters in Brisbane, where the Australians are at a training camp ahead of their tours of Zimbabwe and the UAE later this year. “We didn’t play well in India. I don’t know, but I am guessing the wickets in Dubai will be similar.”I am guessing they will prepare wickets that spin and they will have two or three spinners in those teams. We have to find a way to get better. That is one of our great challenges as a Test team.”The Indian-style pitches in Brisbane will not be installed in time to prepare Clarke’s men for their series against Pakistan, but Cricket Australia’s general manager of team performance Pat Howard hoped they would be ready by the end of the coming summer. An indoor spinning surface is already part of the setup at the National Cricket Centre, but such outdoor pitches would provide a unique opportunity for batsmen ahead of subcontinental tours.”A third of all our matches are in the subcontinent, so you’ve got to be able to deal with it,” Howard said. “While we do practise here against spin … we know it’s not as real as being there. We’re never going to make it exactly the same, but we’re going to try to get as close as we can.”The subcontinent [pitch] idea has been around for a long time and we’re very much trying to make this a place where in the middle of winter guys can get themselves ready and prepared. Some players in our system are fantastic at using their feet and playing against spin, but our collective experience has got to get better.”

'We are not a team to lose like this' – Nabi

Afghanistan captain Mohammad Nabi said they perished under pressure although they had talked up the weight of expectations on the home side

Mohammad Isam in Mirpur16-Mar-2014Afghanistan captain Mohammad Nabi said they perished under pressure although they had talked up the weight of expectations on the home side. Gracious under fire, Nabi said that his team wasn’t overconfident, and praised Bangladesh’s spinners. This was the fourth time Afghanistan were bowled out for less than 100 runs in T20 internationals , three of them now coming against Test-playing nations.”We didn’t handle the pressure well so we lost,” Nabi said. “We enjoyed the big game, the pressre game. We weren’t overconfident. It’s a part of the game. Today Bangladesh played very well, that’s why they won the game. Otherwise we are not a team to lose like this. The conditions, the pitch was a little too difficult as well.”Despite the talk of building pressure on Bangladesh, Afghanistan themselves were troubled by a big loss to Zimbabwe in the warm-up game two days ago, and a worrying batting trend against spin. All of these problems came together for Afghanistan on an important occasion. The ball did turn from the start, even when Nabi and Karim Sadiq bowled early in the Bangladesh innings. Nabi also defended his batsmen when asked if their aggressive approach was wrong. However, he said the batsmen would have to work on their approach against quality spinners.”We didn’t expect that kind of a pitch too much but they bowled very well and got the extra bounce so we struggled in the middle,” he said. “If we had scored a bit more, it could have been a good game.”Since the Asia Cup, we have been struggling against quality spinners. We will try to improve against them. We will try our best to be stronger in the next two games. We just threw one or two wickets away, [Mohammad] Shehzad and Gulbadin [Naib]. Otherwise, two run outs and two good balls. We can’t play like that. We need to improve,” he said.Following Shahzad’s first-ball dismissal, Najeeb Tarakai and Gulbadin Naib staged a recovery by adding 36 before the latter gave Sabbir Rahman a chance to make amends after dropping him the previous ball. It triggered a collapse, from which they never recovered.Nabi said they are now pinning their hopes on a Bangladesh loss to either Nepal or Hong Kong, which would reopen their bid for the main draw. “We will try our best to win both games,” Nabi said. “It’s cricket, nothing can be said. If Bangladesh lose one game, we might come back.”

Perry stars as Australia hit back

A late evening collapse by England’s top-order left Australia jubilant and rounded off an excellent fightback, after they had been reduced to 37 for 5 on the second morning

ScorecardHeather Knight was bowled by Rene Farrell as England’s second innings got off to a terrible start•Getty ImagesA late evening collapse by England’s top-order left Australia jubilant and rounded off an excellent fightback, after they had been reduced to 5 for 37 on the second morning. Although England had edged back in front after conceding a first-innings deficit, they were three down at stumps.Rene Farrell added to her first-innings 4 for 43 by dismissing both of England’s openers: Heather Knight for 1, with a quicker delivery that broke through her defence to hit off stump, and Sarah Taylor, caught at first slip for a duck, attempting to cut a wide ball. In between, Ellyse Perry had Lydia Greenway trapped lbw for 5.For Perry, it was the end to a day in which she confirmed her status as a true allrounder, achieving her highest score in all international cricket and frustrating England’s bowlers in the process. She shared a vital partnership with Jodie Fields, as the two steadied Australia before lunch. Their 55-run partnership was ended when Test debutant Kathryn Cross, whose 3 for 35 in 18 overs included 10 maidens, struck again, tempting Fields to cut a wide one outside off and edge straight to Jenny Gunn at gully. Gunn took a spectacular catch diving to her left and Fields departed for 43.The partnership between Perry and spinner Erin Osborne then proved a further irritation for England. Perry, initially frustrated by her inability to score runs freely, found an able partner in Osborne, as the two of them worked hard to rotate the strike and keep the runs flowing. Osborne grew in confidence, playing some beautiful drives down the ground, hitting five boundaries in her 40.England were further hampered by the removal of Katherine Brunt from the attack. In her first over after lunch, the ball slipped from Brunt’s hand, resulting in her second head-height full toss of the day and the suspension of England’s most dangerous bowler for the rest of the innings. The scorching Perth heat gradually sapped the strength of England’s other quicks, with captain Charlotte Edwards only able to bowl them for short periods. Anya Shrubsole and Gunn both left the field between spells as England were forced to bowl Test debutant Natalie Sciver and part-time medium-pacer Arran Brindle, neither of whom proved effective at breaking the partnership of Perry and Osborne. It did not help that Edwards was off the field for 40 minutes before tea and remained so for the entire evening session, after an awkward dive in the field left her undergoing treatment on her knee, and unable to open for England.Australia had recovered to 177, having added 140 for the loss of just Fields, before Gunn finally made the breakthrough, surprising Perry with a fuller ball and bowling her for 71, a score which she had fought 172 balls for. It was an apt reward for Gunn’s efforts – she bowled 18 overs at a cost of just 14 runs – as both she and spinner Danielle Hazell attempted to dry up Australia’s scoring.England were unable to sweep through the tail until the new ball aided matters, with Shrubsole following on from her efforts on the first evening by taking two wickets: Osborne, lbw for 40 to an inswinger that looked to be hitting leg stump, and Sarah Coyte to another slower inswinger which hit middle and off, leaving Shrubsole with figures of 4 for 51. Sciver finished the job, finally claiming her first Test wicket, as Farrell was caught by Shrubsole at fine leg off an attempted hook shot, as Australia were all out for 207, a lead of six runs.Such a total looked unlikely when Australia slipped to 5 for 37 in the tenth over of the day. Cross was rewarded with the wicket of danger-woman Jess Cameron from only her fourth delivery in Test cricket, bowling her with a good-length ball. Cross followed this up in her next over with a full, straight yorker to Alex Blackwell, who was dismissed for a four-ball duck.An exceptionally hostile spell of bowling from Brunt then paid off as she claimed the wicket of Wormsley centurion Sarah Elliott, who edged behind on 13. Suddenly Australia were five down, and staring the follow-on target of 51 in the face. But that seems a long time ago.

Preference to BPL leads to clash in BCB

Two committees in the Bangladesh Cricket Board are at loggerheads following the scheduling of the Bangladesh Premier League in the 2013-14 domestic calendar. The BPL was given a better time slot in place of the Bangladesh Cricket League, a first-class competition, initially scheduled for December, that has now been pushed to June 2014.Former Bangladesh captain and BCB’s tournament committee chairman Naimur Rahman said that his idea to keep the two first-class tournaments together was overruled by the cricket operations committee.”I am against this domestic calendar personally as the preference of the BPL over the BCL cannot be justified,” Naimur told the Dhaka-based newspaper . “I think the BCL should have been given more preference instead of the BPL because, among the three formats, Bangladesh lacks most in Test cricket.””They [BCB’s cricket operations committee] argued that if the BPL is shifted to April, it won’t be a profitable venture. The international players will not be available because the IPL is scheduled to start at that time. Though there is logic behind it, we must try to understand where our priority lies and act accordingly,” Naimur added.Enayet Hossain Siraj, the BCB’s cricket operations committee chairman, however said that the BPL was given precedence to help prepare the Bangladesh players for the World Twenty20, which will begin in March 2014. “The BPL would be a 26-day affair, which will help our players prepare for the ICC World Twenty20,” Siraj said. The BCL was introduced last year as a first-class competition that was superior to the National Cricket League, which is played between seven divisions from the country and an additional team from Dhaka. The highest run-scorers and wicket-takers from the NCL are then selected to play for four zones in the BCL.Naimur believes that if the BCL is given more priority in the calendar, it will have an effect on domestic and international cricket in Bangladesh. He said that playing an extra first-class tournament will only benefit the Bangladesh players in Test cricket with more time spent playing four-day matches. In addition, since the BCL is a better tournament with better pay and a lot more competition, it will motivate the players to focus on the NCL, which acts as the BCL’s feeder.”When our standard of Test cricket is so low, I am of the opinion that it will be better to promote the BCL because that will allow our cricketers to develop their skill in the longer version,” Naimur said. “If we learn to promote the BCL, then the cricketers will naturally increase their focus on the NCL, because only 80 top-class performers of the NCL will participate in this franchise-based competition.”

Gilchrist damages RCB's chances

Scorecard and ball-by-ball details
Adam Gilchrist with the man he believed should have been the Man of the Match: Azhar Mahmood•BCCI

During one of the matches that Adam Gilchrist sat out of, he complained – not without humour – about how the umpiring mistakes had all been targeting his Kings XI Punjab side. He also said that he might have had a whinge, but his side needed to do better despite umpiring mistakes. It seemed Gilchrist would be left saying something similar tonight after Chris Gayle survived an lbw shout when he was 4 off 11, and went onto help Royal Challengers Bangalore score 122 in the last 10 overs.Luck turned on the night, though. Gilchrist was plumb at 18 off 16 when he didn’t pick a Muttiah Muralitharan doosra. A mix of outside edges, inside edges and some vintage Gilchrist shots, helped by Azhar Mahmood’s 61 off 41, stunned Royal Challengers, ending the chase of 175 with 11 balls to spare. Kings XI kept their slim hope alive, and made it difficult for Royal Challengers, who were left fighting Sunrisers Hyderabad for the final playoff place. Sunrisers are level with Royal Challengers, but have a game in hand.Put in, Royal Challengers needed a huge total on a flat pitch and short outfield, especially given their bowling. For a long period of time, it seemed Royal Challengers wouldn’t even get to a fighting total. Kings XI bowled few loose balls in the first half of the innings, and Gayle and Virat Kohli struggled to come to terms with the pace of the pitch. After their misfortune, Kings XI lost their way towards the end. Once Gayle and Kohli began hitting, the Kings XI bowlers were like rabbits caught in headlights and kept bowling length balls, which kept disappearing. Parvinder Awana, the bowler who had been denied the Gayle wicket earlier, came back to rip Gayle’s stump into two in the 19th over. Despite the damage control, Kings XI had been hit hard, and the momentum seemed to have shifted. However, Royal Challengers bowlers once again had no sting. Theirs is a bit like the typical Indian ODI team under MS Dhoni, with which no total seems safe. Gilchrist was scratching around, and struggling to go at a run a ball when Mahmood joined him. Having bowled two good overs at the death, Mahmood came and smacked three consecutive boundaries in the sixth over to inject some life into the chase.Gilchrist kept handing over the strike to Mahmood until it was time for both to go. Then Gilchrist got an outside edge for four. Then a four off the inside half of the bat. The best of Gilchrist came against Muralitharan when he charged at him and drove him back over his head for four. He bettered it by charging at the returning Zaheer Khan and sending him back over the sight screen. It all ended in a blur after that, but his driving and sweeping of Murali for consecutive sixes stood out.Once again Gilchrist called it as he saw it. He pointed out both the lbw mistakes, admitted that he “scratched around like an old chook” in the first half, and that Mahmood deserved the Man-of-the-Match award that he got.
