Pressure on Sri Lanka – Williamson

On a surface that even New Zealand’s tail made seem friendly, three of Sri Lanka’s big four batsmen could not manage better than single figures, and Kane Williamson said the value of those wickets could not be understated, given the pitch remained good for batting.New Zealand amassed 412 on the P Sara surface, thanks in the main to a 262-run partnership between Ross Taylor and Williamson, which was almost chanceless beyond the first hour of their union. In reply, however, Sri Lanka were reduced to 12 for 3 inside the first six overs of their innings, with their most experienced men in the top order all falling to New Zealand’s opening bowlers.Angelo Mathews then joined Tharanga Paranavitana at the crease and the pair survived the remaining 11.5 overs until stumps, but two boundaries that Mathews ventured in one Tim Southee over suggested the wicket had plenty more runs to give. The New Zealand bowlers also had far less assistance from the conditions than in Galle, achieving only a fraction of the movement they had showed themselves capable of gaining in the first Test.”It’s great to finish the evening the way we did, getting those three wickets,” Williamson said. “I guess that makes our first innings total look a lot better, and there is a lot of pressure going on the Sri Lankan side tomorrow.”But as Mathews showed towards the end when he started playing some shots, it is still a good wicket.”Few would have imagined New Zealand would be in a position to pursue a large first-innings total only a few days ago, after their batsmen had collapsed woefully in their second innings in Galle, recording their lowest total in an already bleak year. Williamson’s doughty 135 and a measured 142 from Taylor were the backbone of New Zealand’s innings and Williamson said time in the nets had been key to their turnaround, in the absence of adequate match practice. The limited-overs leg of the tour was ravaged by rain, and the match schedule did not allow New Zealand time to play a warm-up before the Tests.”It’s been tough not having time in the middle and batting in the one-dayers, the circumstances didn’t allow you to figure out whether you were hitting the ball well or not. I’ve been practising hard this week and it was very nice to put together an innings. I had a lot of time with batting coach, and hit a lot of balls.”Williamson’s century was the third of his Test career and his second in the subcontinent, but he had only passed fifty once since his last hundred, a match saving 102 not out in Wellington. He said encouragement and insight from his more experienced team-mates helped him overcome the dry spell.”I talked to Brendon McCullum and a few of the other batsmen, just to get my head around a few things because I hadn’t scored for a few Tests. They all helped out and the team were supportive. Having not scored in the first Test, it was good to get the word from them on how things played here and take that into this match.”Despite their terrific position, New Zealand must still take 17 more wickets on a surface showing few signs of wear, if they are to score an unexpected triumph. Thilan Samaraweera moved down the order after he received stitches on his hand for split webbing, but he is expected to bat in Sri Lanka’s first innings, and beyond the batsmen, the tail is one of the more capable Sri Lanka have fielded, with last man in Shaminda Eranga having made a first-class ton.”They’ve got some seriously good cricketers, and to bowl them out twice is not going to be an easy feat,” Williamson said. “We’re not getting too far ahead of ourselves and we know we have to play good cricket each time we go out there.”

LANCE!

Tendulkar's dismissal was planned – Rampaul

Can you set up Sachin Tendulkar? Apparently yes, according to Ravi Rampaul. Ottis Gibson, the West Indies coach, had a brief chat early on Friday morning with Rampaul, one half of the visitors’ new-ball pair. Gibson, a former Windies fast bowler himself, sketched out a plan, asking Rampaul to keep an off stump line, pull his length back and surprise Tendulkar with the bounce. Rampaul did all that, and successfully trapped Tendulkar six short of a much-awaited century.”This morning while we were warming up, the coach and I were chatting about how we were going to bowl at him and out him,” Rampaul said at the end of the day’s play. The plan was to basically get closer to the wicket and just angle the ball away from him. He nicked it and it was a good feeling.”Tendulkar had started off briskly, with a couple of punched drives for fours, and an upper-cut six off Fidel Edwards. The visitors opted for the second new ball first thing in the morning and Rampaul was trying to hit the seam, just short of length, keeping an off stump line in his attempt to make Tendulkar play. It took him a few overs to hit the right stride. Also he noticed that Tendulkar was playing him from out of his crease.Ravi Rampaul described the delivery that dismissed Sachin Tendulkar as “just the right ball at the right time”•AFP

“He was batting out of his crease, trying to get the ball a little fuller so I realised that and pulled back my length. The ball before actually bounced as well. It was just the right ball at the right time,” is how Rampaul described the wicket.Asked if he it was the best wicket in his 12-Test career, Rampaul did rank it high on his list. “It was a big moment,” he said. “The atmosphere was huge and there was lot of crowd support for him. He is a big wicket.”It did not take much time for the hate messages to float on planet Twitter, where sharp verbal darts were being thrown at the quiet man from Trinidad & Tobago. According to Rampaul, the bad vibes against him were heard even at the ground. “I got that as soon as Sachin got out. When I went back to the boundary it was not all that nice,” Rampaul said about being heckled by the Mumbai fans. “That is life and that is how cricket goes. I know a lot of fans are down and heartbroken but we can’t just let him go and play freely. We had our job to do, much as he had his job to do.”Immediately after Tendulkar’s departure, India suffered a double-jolt when Darren Sammy spread-eagled MS Dhoni’s stumps with a fuller-length delivery, which Dhoni tried playing with poor footwork. Two wickets for nine runs, three overall before lunch, had the West Indies’ spirits high. However, the inexperienced pair of Virat Kohli and R Ashwin played with resolve and their 97-run partnership for the seventh wicket helped India recover fast. Ashwin further frustrated Sammy and his troops with a fluent century.Rampaul insisted that the bowlers had not relaxed after Tendulkar’s wicket, and instead gave credit to Kohli and Ashwin for their pluck. “They really batted well,” Rampaul said. “Ashwin came out and assessed the wicket and batted according to the conditions. Kohli also did well. When the partnership was building we just tried to stick to our plans, restrict them, and hoping that they will give away their hand. The wicket is not one where you could blast out anybody or spin out anyone. You just have to stick to the basics and stick to the team plans.”

Briggs bowls Hampshire to Finals Day

Hampshire are a step closer to getting the chance to defend their Twenty20 crown after a five-wicket haul by left-arm spinner Danny Briggs set up a crushing 55-run win over Durham at the Rose Bowl.Neil McKenzie’s accomplished fifty had carried Hampshire to a competitive 154 for 6, after which Hampshire’s stable of spinners took full advantage of the helpful conditions to scupper Durham’s chase. The slow men bowled 11.3 overs for just 50 runs in total, with Briggs ripping the heart out of the middle order to finish with 5 for 19 and the Man of the Match award. While Hampshire’s preparation of a pitch to suit their strengths in the bowling department is sure to spark some debate, there was some absorbing cricket on display as ball dominated bat. Hampshire were grateful for a 66-run fourth wicket stand between McKenzie and Sean Ervine, as the eventual first-innings total gave the home side’s spinners vital breathing space and heaped on the scoreboard pressure to induce false strokes from Durham’s batsmen on a turning track.Briggs had played a vital role in Hampshire’s triumph in this competition last season with a club record of 31 wickets, including a Man of the Match performance in the semi final, and is Hampshire’s leading wicket-taker this time round too, with 22 scalps at 14.95 so far. Hampshire captain Dominic Cork also had Imran Tahir and Shahid Afridi’s appreciable talents to turn to, but it was seam rather than spin that he opted to open Hampshire’s defence with. Both Dimitri Mascarenhas and Cork, who turned 40 today and has also been dealing with his father’s illness in recent weeks, managed to keep things reasonably tight, but the match really began to turn when Briggs was brought on in the fifth over, with the field restrictions in place, and immediately struck to remove Mustard.Overseas signing David Miller was the next to go, deceived by dip through the air and zip off the surface to be bowled for 10, and in the very same over Briggs rushed one straight on past Ben Stokes’ thrusting sweep to have him stumped for 28 by wicketkeeper Michael Bates, who had a flawless day behind the stumps. With Durham shorn of the services of the injured Paul Collingwood, Stokes was the only batsman to find any fluency in the conditions, and once he was gone the strangulation began in earnest.Ian Blackwell was completely deceived by a Tahir googly, while Briggs had Dale Benkenstein and Liam Plunkett caught in the deep for his fourth and fifth wickets as Durham slipped to 95 for 8. Once they’d completed their overs, Afridi was brought on and swiftly applied the coup de grace with the wickets of Mitchell Claydon and Scott Borthwick with consecutive deliveries.Durham’s chase ultimately ended with a whimper, but they had been far more competitive in the field, and made a superb start when the potentially-destructive Afridi was run out without facing a ball in the first over. James Vince struggled to get going, and Durham continued to show superb energy in the field as Jimmy Adams was run out to reduce the hosts to 37 for 3.Ervine and McKenzie started slowly but the innings soon began to regain momentum, and they had reached a far more healthy 78 for 3 at the halfway mark. Durham’s spinners – Borthwick, Blackwell and Breese – found plenty of fizz off the surface and Blackwell caused particular problems for McKenzie, who played and missed on several occasions. An intense contest unfolded, McKenzie hitting back with consecutive sixes with a slog sweep and a twinkle-toed loft over cover off Blackwell despite the conditions. A firm platform had been laid but the partnership was then broken in farcical fashion, both batsmen stranded mid-pitch after some very confused calling and Ervine run out for a 30-ball 35.McKenzie remained, however, and marshalled his team past 150, bringing up a 40-ball half-century along the way. That was always going to be a very stiff target for Durham to chase, but once Briggs got going they never had a chance.

Wolves eye up Josh Brownhill move

Wolves are interested in signing Burnley midfielder Josh Brownhill during the summer transfer window, according to a fresh report.

The Lowdown: Brownhill impressing Burnley

The Clarets have had a tough season, with Premier League relegation potentially on the cards, but their midfielder has performed solidly for much of the campaign.

The 26-year-old has started 29 league games and featured in 32 overall, averaging two tackles and 1.9 interceptions per match in the process.

The prospect of relegation could see Brownhill look for a new club, though, and he seemingly won’t be without suitors.

The Latest: Wolves keen on Brownhill move

According to 90min, Wolves are among a host of top-flight clubs expressing an interest in the Englishman. The likes of Aston Villa, Everton and Leeds United are all seen as potential suitors too, as are newly-promoted duo Fulham and Bournemouth.

Brownhill’s current Burnley deal doesn’t expire until the summer of 2024, so prospective suitors may have to accept not being able to sign him on the cheap.

The Verdict: Possible Neves replacement?

While Brownhill may not be the most glamorous midfielder in the Premier League, he is an effective footballer who has recently been hailed as a ‘brilliant’ player by his Turf Moor team-mate Jack Cork.

He may also fill the void which could be left by the eminently possible departure of Ruben Neves, who has been strongly linked with a summer move to Barcelona, fulfilling a childhood dream.

Brownhill is someone who could add steel and underrated quality to Wolves’ midfield next season, making them more sturdy in the middle of the park and allowing others around him to express themselves.

That’s underplaying his own ability, though, with two goals and three assists in the Premier League this season showing that he is also capable of adding considerable end product at Molineux if he makes the move over the coming months.

In other news, Wolves reportedly lead the race to sign one player. Find out who it is here.

Clarke focussed on delivering results

Michael Clarke is prepared for even more criticism in his latest role, but he knows captaining Australia is about achieving good results rather than winning the popular vote

Peter English30-Dec-2010Michael Clarke is prepared for even more criticism in his latest role, but he knows captaining Australia is about achieving good results rather than winning the popular vote. Clarke, who takes over from the injured Ricky Ponting for the SCG Test, is an easy target for critics who snipe about his A-list lifestyle and accuse him of being soft. The off-field matters are not a cricket concern, but everything has been magnified since he has moved to No.4 and entered a worrying form slump. “Everybody’s entitled to their own opinion,” Clarke said after becoming Australia’s 43rd Test captain. “It’s great to see the board and Cricket Australia continue to support me and give me this opportunity. For me it’s about doing whatever I can to help this team win this Test match and level this Ashes series.”While he polls poorly in tabloid newspaper surveys, Clarke is a hugely marketable figure among higher demographics for his style and sporting ability. “It’s part and parcel of what we do now as a professional cricketer,” he said. “You spend a lot of time in the media, so for me I’ve copped criticism throughout my whole career, and it’s no different now.”Clarke, 29, was anointed for Test captaincy before he had played a first-class game, but the last six months have been particularly rocky for someone who was preordained as a leader. He has managed only 322 runs at 21.46 in eight Tests after shifting from No.5.With the associated waves of criticism, his failures made it seem like he subconsciously didn’t want the job he had been groomed for. This week there is no choice. It is Clarke or nobody. Everyone has to get used to the idea that a boy from Sydney’s western suburbs, who now lives across from Bondi Beach, is holding the second-most treasured job in Australia. Clarke has captained the country in 36 limited-overs matches and Ponting said he had already been “a great leader”.There have been regular gripes, in public discussions and private whispers, about Clarke’s high-flying activities and speculation about his influence on young team-mates. He and Simon Katich had a dressing-room fight early in 2009 and older players such as Matthew Hayden, who is on the Cricket Australia board which approved the nomination, have highlighted his Generation Y behaviour. All but two of the men he will lead at the SCG will be in their 20s. He is the captain of the future.Ponting said there was no issue about Clarke being popular among the squad and believed he was capable of handling the extra pressure. “All this dressing-room stuff that’s been in the media and in the papers hasn’t ever been around our rooms at all,” Ponting said. “Everyone he’s played with, and who will play under him this week, he’ll have their total support.”Like Ponting, Clarke has been struggling for runs in this series, and he has been told he must first concentrate on his own game before worrying about the direction of the team. “When it’s your turn to get out there and do the job with the bat or to do whatever you need to as captain, you pay full attention to that,” Ponting said. “It’s nothing new for Michael. He’s been there and done that and he’ll enjoy the week.”Clarke has been Ponting’s deputy since the West Indies tour of 2008 and while the 36-year-old will be on hand to offer advice in Sydney, he won’t be telling his replacement what to do. “Michael and I have worked together very closely for a number of years now, so he’s going to do things his way and that’s the way I want him to do it,” Ponting said. Both players hope Clarke’s elevation is temporary.
