Spurs: Conte must axe Reguilon

Antonio Conte’s Tottenham Hotspur side will make the short trip from north to west London this afternoon as they take on Brentford at the Brentford Community Stadium, looking to boost their top-four hopes with a victory.

The Italian’s outfit are currently fourth in the Premier League but have very close competition from arch-rivals Arsenal, who are behind on goal difference alone.

Spurs had been on a good run of four consecutive victories in the league before last Saturday’s 1-0 defeat at home to Brighton.

Now, they’ll be looking to make amends for that loss by getting back to winning ways against the Bees.

However, after last weekend’s slip-up, Conte could be tempted to make changes to his side and axe some of those who let him down against the Seagulls, with left-wing-back Sergio Reguilon certainly a culprit.

On the chalkboard

Prior to Ryan Sessegnon’s hamstring injury, the Spaniard had lost his place in the side to the 21-year-old with the Englishman offering plenty of attacking flair in the final third.

The 25-year-old was left out of the starting lineup by Conte for six out of seven league matches between late January and early March, only coming back into the side when Sessegnon was withdrawn in the 5-0 victory over Everton.

Ironically, Reguilon did score in that match and has missed just one game since with a knock.

However, Sessegnon has since recovered from his injury and has been on the bench for Spurs’ last two matches. Whether Conte has kept the £68k-per-week Spaniard in the starting lineup for tactical reasons or concerns over the 21-year-old’s fitness is unknown.

What is known though, is that Reguilon is walking on a tightrope in terms of keeping his place in the side after coming back into the starting lineup last weekend for the injured Matt Doherty, who is now out for the season.

The Spaniard, who has made 25 Premier League appearances so far this term, averages just 24.3 accurate passes a match – at an accuracy of 79% – whilst winning just over half of his duels at 52% with 4.6 a game.

However, against Brighton last weekend, the wing-back was well below par for his standards.

The 25-year-old completed just 17 passes with an accuracy of 63% and couldn’t manage to complete a dribble, attempting just one.

Moreover, it was a timid performance defensively, offering 0 clearances, blocks or interceptions whilst making just one tackle. The only positive was a 70% duel win rate.

Speaking to Football Insider, Spurs insider John Wenham recently labelled the wing-back as “average” whilst also stating that “he’s the worst of the bunch.”

With Reguilon’s popularity amongst the Tottenham faithful at a low, now is the time for Conte to axe the Spaniard with the Italian unable to make mistakes if his side are to secure Champions League football for next season.

Lee and O'Keefe set up New South Wales victory

Brett Lee made a promising comeback from a long injury lay-off as his tight bowling helped New South Wales to a five-wicket win at Hurstville Oval. Western Australia’s Liam Davis made his maiden one-day century but it wasn’t enough for the Warriors, whose 225 was comfortably overhauled by Steve O’Keefe and his batting colleagues.Brad Haddin, who is on his way back from an elbow injury, set the chase off strongly for the Blues with 70 before O’Keefe and Peter Forrest (35 not out) finished the task. O’Keefe’s unbeaten 70 – his first limited-overs half-century – came off 50 balls and confirmed the result with 16 deliveries to spare. The Blues ended up needing 130 from 25 overs in their second block, after they took the advantage at the halfway mark by reaching 2 for 95 compared to Western Australia’s 1 for 79. Davis and Michael Swart (56) were the only major contributors for the Warriors, who had won the toss but struggled against Lee and Stuart Clark.Lee picked up 2 for 37 from his 11 overs and both of the victims came from his slower delivery, which could become a more important weapon for the fast man as he becomes accustomed to the limitations of his body. It was Lee’s first game for New South Wales in nearly 12 months, after a year in which he has battled a serious elbow problem and injuries to his thumb and arm.He is aiming for a place in Australia’s World Cup defence and on the evidence of his first match back for the Blues, he might be seen in Australian colours as early as the series against Sri Lanka in November. The win was the first success in the new competition for New South Wales, while Mickey Arthur is still searching for a maiden victory as coach of Western Australia.

Aston Villa: Bertrand Traore injury claim emerges

Bertrand Traore’s focus for the remainder of 2021/22 will be to get to full fitness ahead of pre-season, according to injury expert Ben Dinnery (via Football Insider).

The Lowdown: Riddled with injuries

The 26-year-old recently returned from the Africa Cup of Nations with Burkina Faso, but has since sustained a hamstring injury in training.

During Steven Gerrard’s press conference last Friday (11 February), he revealed: “We’re going to lose Berto for a few weeks” (via Birmingham Live).

A separate thigh injury had kept the winger out for the majority of the season, severely limiting his game time.

During the 2020/21 campaign, Traore played an important part in Villa’s season, featuring in 36 of 38 Premier League matches, scoring and assisting seven times apiece.

The Latest: Dinnery makes pre-season claim

According to Football Insider, Dinnery has predicted that Villa will be looking to get Traore ready for 2022/23 season, rather than rushing him back to 100 per cent for the remainder of the current campaign.

“This is a difficult one,” he told Football Insider‘s Adam Williams.

“The initial noises are that it doesn’t appear to be on the higher end of the injury spectrum.

“Steven Gerrard has said a few weeks, so we’re maybe looking at a high grade one, so maybe two to three weeks.

“However, the context is we’re talking about a player who has only played 115 minutes of Premier League football all season.

“We’re not talking about getting players ready for the here and now. It’s about ensuring they stay available once they return.

“It may be the case that they are just looking to manage Traore between now and the end of the season.

“Get a few starts under his belt and some minutes but with a big focus on preparing him for pre-season.

“Once he gets that pre-season under his belt, he can hopefully hit the ground running next season.”

The Verdict: A blow, but sensible

With the arrival of former Barcelona star Philippe Coutinho, Gerrard should have enough high-quality attacking options at his disposal. This includes Emiliano Buendia, who arrived at Villa park at the beginning of the season, and has gone on to feature on 21 occasions for the West Midlands club in the top-flight.

On top of that, while Gerrard will be keen not to let the campaign peter out, the Villans are 12 points off the top six and ten points clear of the drop, meaning there is little to gain by forcing Traore back to action too quickly.

With former manager Dean Smith hailing the winger as a “marvellous technician”, it is not surprising to hear that the club are willing to take the time to ensure a smooth return, as he is clearly thought of very highly by Gerrard and the wider management team.

Ramnarine denies WICB payment claim

Dinanath Ramnarine has denied allegations from the West Indies board that he received US$150,000 during legal proceedings involving the two bodies

Cricinfo staff26-Aug-2010Dinanath Ramnarine, the West Indies Players’ Association chief executive, has denied allegations from the West Indies board that he received US$150,000 during legal proceedings involving the two bodies. A WIPA statement said Ramnarine had referred the matter, which was raised in a WICB media release, to his lawyers. It is another messy chapter in the drawn-out saga between the WICB and the players’ union that involves almost daily allegations and counter arguments between the parties. In the latest claim WIPA has denied it delayed or breached any agreements.Responding to the WICB’s release on Wednesday, WIPA said in a statement no time-frame had been set out in the New York Agreement for special arbitrations. It also claimed it has had no response from a letter written to the WICB in December 2009 regarding the memorandum of understanding.Further, WIPA said it had adhered to all the terms of the New York Agreement, but the issues of player rankings and injury payments remained unresolved. Finally, it pointed out the proposal of the ICC and the Federation of International Cricketers’ Associations had no power to bind, unlike the arbitration process.

Wally Edwards elected CA deputy chairman

Cricket Australia could be set to have a former Test player as chairman for the first time since Sir Donald Bradman, with the election of Wally Edwards as deputy chairman. Edwards, who is the longest serving of the current board of directors, was promoted to the role at the Cricket Australia board meeting in Melbourne on Friday. An opening batsman from Western Australia, Edwards played three Tests during the 1974-75 Ashes series. He has served on the CA board since 1996 and, as deputy chairman, he will be the leading candidate to take over as chairman when the incumbent Jack Clarke’s term expires.”The board’s decision to elect Wally Edwards as Cricket Australia’s deputy chairman is a wonderful result,” Clarke said. “Wally has been a dedicated servant of the game, firstly as a player and now administrator and I look forward to working closely with him to ensure the continued success of cricket in this country.”A civil engineer, Edwards owns a Perth-based company that manufactures irrigation products, and he has also served as vice-president of the Western Australian Cricket Association. Edwards, 60, said he was looking forward to his new role.”It is a great honour to be elected Cricket Australia’s deputy chairman,” Edwards said. “I am excited at the prospect of working with current chairman Jack Clarke and the Cricket Australia board as Australian cricket strives to continue is recent success and help to ensure cricket retains its position as Australia’s favourite sport.”

Sky share possible Rudiger boost for Spurs

As per Sky Sports (via Football Daily), Tottenham Hotspur may have been handed a possible boost in the race to sign Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger as his contract winds down.

The Lowdown: Spurs work on agreement…

According to reports, the Germany international is very much a top transfer target for Spurs, managing director Fabio Paratici, chairman Daniel Levy and coach Antonio Conte.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-updates-5/” title=”Spurs latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Football Insider claim that Paratici is in fact ‘calling every day’, maintaining constant contact with Rudiger’s entourage as he attempts to reach an agreement and win the race for his signature.

However, suitors from overseas like Real Madrid and Bayern Munich possess an advantage given they can formally agree pre-contracts this month – a card Spurs do not hold.

Tottenham do remain in the hunt as things stand with another source, Eurosport journalist Dean Jones, recently backing the Lilywhites’ interest.

Now, in an update on Rudiger’s situation at Stamford Bridge, Sky have shared some ‘interesting news’ in what could be a boost for Spurs.

The Latest: Sky share possible Rudiger boost…

Dropping an update on live TV (via Football Daily), the broadcast giant relays that Chelsea’s star defender is in ‘no rush’ to sign a pre-contract agreement with an overseas club.

This is because he is ‘very aware’ there could be ‘interest from the Premier League’ if he were to become a free agent at the end of this season.

As well as this, despite the fact he could still sign an extension with Chelsea, they would have to make the 28-year-old the ‘highest paid defender’ in England’s top flight to stop him from leaving.

“Some interesting news reaching us regarding Antonio Rudiger,” Sky explained.

“He says he’s in no rush to sign a pre-contract agreement, now earlier this week we reported that Real Madrid, Juventus, PSG and Bayern Munich had all opened talks with his representatives.

“Barcelona, they’re also keeping an eye on his situation, but he’s very aware there could be interest from the Premier League if, of course, he were to become a free agent in the summer.

“Signing a new contract at Stamford Bridge hasn’t been ruled out for Rudiger, but we’re told Chelsea would have to make him the highest paid defender in the Premier League to keep him there.”

The Verdict: Boost for Spurs…

This update on Rudiger’s situation and transfer stance does come as a boost with Paratici as Tottenham remaining very much in contention.

Foreign sides being able to formally secure the centre-back to a pre-contract in January certainly put Spurs at a big disadvantage in the race so his willingness to bide time and entertain offers closer to home bolsters Paratici and Conte’s chances.

Rudiger’s demands to be made the highest paid defender in England if he is to agree a Chelsea extension could also boost Spurs.

Indeed, Lilywhites chairman Levy apparently has no problem tabling lucrative wages and is willing to make a ‘huge’ salary offer to tempt the player across London (Football Insider).

Taking all this into account, you can’t rule Spurs out just yet.

Spurs eyeing Antonio Rudiger agreement

According to Tottenham Hotspur sources, speaking to Football Insider, a major update has emerged on their pursuit of Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger.

The Lowdown: Spurs eyeing Rudiger…

Tottenham have been linked with a move for the potential 2022 free agent as transfer chief Fabio Paratici reportedly eyes ‘quality players’ at ‘zero cost’ for manager Antonio Conte (Mundo Deportivo, via Sport Witness).

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-updates-5/” title=”Spurs latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Germany international has been attracting many suitors following a very impressive 2021, with pundit Rio Ferdinand calling him ‘animal’ and comparing him to Manchester City superstar defender Ruben Dias following his rejuvenation under Thomas Tuchel (FIVE, via The Mirror).

Sharing an update on Spurs’ chase, Football Insider have some news on the transfer pursuit.

The Latest: Paratici backed by Levy…

As per their information, Paratici is said to be trying to ‘force an agreement’ for Rudiger in January ahead of the player joining Spurs next summer.

He is also being backed by chairman Daniel Levy, who is willing to offer the 28-year-old ‘huge’ wages to convince him to join the north Londoners.

The Verdict: Get it done…

Out of all of Tottenham’s centre-back targets, we believe Rudiger stands out above the rest, with him being the right age, quality and the fact that he can move for free.

Speaking to Amazon Prime (via Metro), John Barnes called the defender ‘sensational’, and an upgrade on his £100,000-per-week wages is the very least that Spurs can offer.

The towering colossus could inject real quality into Tottenham’s starting XI for zero cost and provide Conte with another option as he aims to oversee a new era and a Lilywhites revival.
