Wolves: Traore and Neves set to stay

Adama Traore and Ruben Neves are expected to remain at Wolves beyond Tuesday’s transfer deadline, according to The Athletic’s Tim Spiers.

The lowdown

It was reported last week that Tottenham Hotspur, now managed by former Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo, had made an unsuccessful loan offer for the Spanish winger, while the Portugal midfielder has been linked with Manchester United and Arsenal over the course of the summer.

Neves has played every Premier League minute so far under Bruno Lage, while Traore has been on the pitch for all but three minutes.

The latest

Spiers tweeted that ‘as things stand’, he’s ‘not anticipating’ late exits for either Traore or Neves. He does accept that ‘a huge bid’ could alter the situation but there’s ‘nothing active at the moment’.

The focus appears to be on incomings, with Renato Sanches ‘plus maybe one more’ targeted on deadline day.

The verdict

If Wolves were to sell either of these players, it would have been wisest to do so in the early part of the transfer window. They wouldn’t necessarily want to be scrambling around for replacements at this late stage.

You do wonder whether cashing in on Traore would be smart given his rather paltry return of 10 goals in 135 appearances, but maybe Spurs’ loan proposal is the only concrete offer Wolves have received.

In other news, many Wolves fans were buzzing over this transfer update.

Bermuda go professional

Beyond the Test World

The bulk of Bermuda’s squad have been handed professional full-time contracts by the board as the team begins to prepare for the World Cup Qualifiers.Kevin Hurdle, the fast bowler still recovering from injury, makes the 19-man squad as does George O’Brien, and there are no major surprises. Gus Logie, the Bermuda coach, will be gathering the players together over the next few weeks as their training regime intensifies, and Logie is determined to right the wrongs of 2008.”In 2009 we want to prove the critics wrong. We’ve taken a lot of flack, some of it justified, some of it not, but we have the ability to put things right,” he told the . “We have the ability now to prepare to our best and produce the results we deserve. I’ve no doubt we can qualify again. There’s nothing in the stars that says we can’t do it.”We have to spend the next few weeks getting to know each other again and understanding why we are here.”The squad are off to Trinidad on January 29 to train at their national cricket centre, and will play four games against the Under-23s, a university side and a club before taking on a high-quality XI in St Lucia.”Basically we’ll have five days in each of those territories, three games in each and four in Trinidad,” Logie said. “In South Africa we are going to be playing in a lot of different venues against different opposition so we are trying to get as much diversity as possible. We’ll be coming up against quality players in all of the islands and we’ll have to adjust to different conditions which is what it is all about.”Bermuda will head out to South Africa in mid-March for a fortnight’s preparation before the tournament.

Dane Scarlett Hoping to Take Advantage of Tottenham’s Striker Issues

The Harry Kane saga may be rolling on but Tottenham Hotspur were keen to show that there is life after their key striker. A 1-0 win over champions Manchester City on the opening day of the new campaign proves that this Spurs side can beat anyone in the league, irrespective of whether Kane is involved.

It’s also thought that the club is keen to sign another centre forward before the end of the window, either as a partner for Kane or a direct replacement. The media is naturally fascinated but there is a young striker in reserve who seems to have a big future ahead of him.

Spurs Turn to Scarlett

Many young strikers have come and gone at Spurs: For every Harry Kane there is a John Obika and a Cameron Lancaster to balance things out. That’s why the fans are being cautiously optimistic over Dane Scarlett and the potential for the 17 year old to have a big future.

He’s already featured in the first team and, while he’s yet to score, Scarlett has looked sharp in his brief substitute appearances to date. He was prolific at Under 23 level for the club and, when called up for the England Under 16s in 2019, he scored both goals in a 2-0 win over Denmark.

It’s early days but Spurs have rewarded the young striker with a two-year contract and there is genuine optimism among the supporters.

Realistic Aims

2020/21 was a disappointing season for Spurs fans as their club finished outside of the Champions League places. Having finished in seventh, Tottenham will now compete in the new Europa Conference League which is little consolation for the likes of Harry Kane.

With or without Kane, it would be unrealistic to expect Spurs to win the title this season. A more realistic aim for the club under Nuno Espirito Santo would be to finish inside the top four and claim a Champions League place.

Having beaten Manchester City in their first game of 2020/21, Tottenham have shortened to fifth favourites for that top four finish. Sports betting sites affiliated with sbo.net list Manchester City as the favourites, followed by Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United.

Those figures will continue to change throughout this 2021/22 Premier League season and the markets will remain open until such time as the final places are decided. Sbo.net’s recommend sportsbooks will react to results and update the figures accordingly.

Readers of the website will also be able to take in news items and opinion pieces relating to the world of football. Those articles may well help make decisions and, if it’s time to place a bet, there is a panel of recommended sportsbooks listed, many of whom have generous welcome promotions.

Once on board, there is a range of funding options available together with some effective customer service. It’s a useful website for the betting community but anyone looking to stake on Spurs will want to see the club solve their striker issues.

Falling out of Favour

Talking up a young player before they are ready is a dangerous business and another striker on the Spurs staff is proving that theory. Before Irish teenager Troy Parrott had made his senior debut, he was being referred to as the next Robbie Keane.

Keane had been one of Tottenham’s most prolific and popular performers of recent years and he was known for his impressive scoring return from a young age. Parrott duly made his Spurs debut as a 17 year old but he’s subsequently been loaned out to Millwall and Ipswich Town. In 32 combined games for those lower league clubs, he scored just twice.

There are many more examples of young players failing to live up to their hype but there is genuine hope that Dane Scarlett will be different. The fact that he’s yet to be loaned out suggests that Spurs will offer him a genuine chance in the first team although that situation could change before the close of the summer window.

If he remains in North London, the teenage striker could get an opportunity to shine in the EFL Cup and the Europa Conference League. Good performances in those competitions could well prove the belief that Tottenham have a true star on their hands.

Aggressive Gambhir remains focused

Gautam Gambhir did not back down when the Australians tried to unsettle him with aggression, but he did not lose his concentration either during his third Test century

“I don’t think I need to get into this argument about Shane Watson. There was no chance he could have got me out.” At the press conference, Gautam Gambhir spoke as emphatically as he played in making 149 not out – his second century in two innings against Australia – and one which put India in a commanding position on the first day of a Test where they can seal the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. It was the 51st over of the innings, and Gambhir had reached 65, when he had the altercation with Watson. Gambhir flicked Watson towards midwicket – his most productive shot today – and the bowler gesticulated and said something to Gambhir during the first run. While going back for the second, it appeared as if Gambhir stuck out his elbow to hit Watson in the rib cage (he later claimed it was an accident). Another heated exchange followed later, when Simon Katich came in Gambhir’s way as he looked to steal a sharp single. On such occasions, it seemed the temperamental wild child in him would reappear and compel him to lose his concentration. But, as Gambhir said, there was no chance Australia could get him out. “They were really desperate. They were trying to break my concentration. The important thing was to just be in their eyes and not back off. I have always believed in not backing off, and keeping my concentration.” Every time he got into an altercation, he went back, concentrated harder, but remembered to keep his aggressive edge. “I have stopped being angry now, I don’t get so angry. It just comes naturally for me, but not anymore,” Gambhir said.It was a relieved Gambhir – after his breakthrough hundred in Mohali – who took guard today. “There was a lot of talk around me, wherever I used to go, that I have been getting out in the 60s and 70s,” Gambhir said, talking of the impact the Mohali innings had on him. “The important thing was I always knew that it was just around the corner. If I am getting the 60s and 70s, and if I got just one hundred, that could be the turning point of my Test career. That Mohali hundred has worked in my favour. Maybe I am much more relaxed because that talk has gone down.”The innings that followed Mohali was a complete one. There was struggle, there was accumulation, and finally, there was domination. After he started with a flashy square drive, he was made to work hard for his runs. He also saw Virender Sehwag, his usual partner in aggression, go early, and Rahul Dravid not long after. Stuark Clark was in the middle of a typically miserly spell; his first seven overs went for five runs. Watson began with a strong off-side field, and kept bowling wide of the off stump, playing on his patience. Gambhir was forced to play a game that doesn’t come naturally to him – his first 100 balls fetched him 38 runs. But Gambhir had with him Sachin Tendulkar playing a fantastic knock, which took the pressure off. He let Tendulkar take charge, and started taking singles and doubles. The running between the wickets was top-notch, and it ensured that the second-string bowlers never got into rhythm. The pair also knew that Australia were lagging behind the over-rate and that the third string would soon be introduced. By the time Cameron White came on, Gambhir had reached 40 off 117. In White’s first over, he took 10, via a cut, a drive through extra cover, and a fine sweep.

“The way Sachin and I played against White, I don’t think they had any option of continuing with him,” Gambhir said. “They had to bowl some other bowler. For me, spinners still have a major role to play, but the way we played they had no option of continuing with it.”What followed was a calculated assault and the Australian bowlers aided him. Watson bowled, from round the stumps, into his pads time and again. And Gambhir simply kept flicking him through midwicket. Seven boundaries, near-replays of each other, came through the area; many more were fielded at short midwicket. The other shot as valuable for him was the steer through third man, a smart choice against two bowlers bowling in the high 140ks. He moved from 40 to 100 in 73 balls. Defensive fields or no defensive fields, Gambhir went along at one-day pace. The 100 came up with a grand six off Watson. He had stayed in their eyes, but not lost his concentration. “I made my debut against Australia and I was all at sea, to be honest,” Gambhir said. “At that time, I had one dream – to score runs against Australia. That dream is now coming true. I was very determined coming into this series because I sure remembered my debut Test. It wasn’t that great an experience.”And unlike Mohali, no loose shot was forthcoming once he reached his century. Simply, he went back to concentrating. To all that happened around him, he reacted but did not retort, except through his bat. If the message of the day was not clear enough from his batting, he later spelt it out in black and white for Australia. “The way Katich bowled, a couple of balls really spun. Whatever cricket I have played at the Kotla, the bounce starts getting inconsistent from the third day on, once it starts breaking,” Gambhir said.”We have got two quality spinners in our side, and the condition that we are in – at 300 for 3 – and the way Amit Mishra bowled in the last game, Australia are going to be under pressure. The kind of batting they have shown on the turning track in Mohali, it’s not going to be easy at all for them here.”

Pundit praises Arsenal summer transfer target James Maddison

Leicester City midfielder James Maddison has been linked with a move to Arsenal this summer with the Daily Mail recently claiming the Gunners are willing to offer players such as Reiss Nelson and Ainsley Maitland-Niles as part of a deal, and former Fox Steve Howey has been waxing lyrical about the England international.

Maddison featured 42 times in all competitions for the Foxes last season, helping himself to 11 goals and 10 assists in the process.

The attacking midfielder has been an outstanding talent for Leicester, with former player Howey full of praise for him.

“I mean there’s no doubt that the lad’s got very, very good ability, we’ve seen some of his goals and some of his assists, absolutely excellent”.

Arsenal will be looking to add some creative players to their ranks this summer to fill the void that Martin Odegaard left when he returned to Real Madrid, after his loan spell at the Emirates came to an end.

Leicester lifted the FA Cup the season just gone as they beat Chelsea 1-0 at Wembley, with Maddison a second-half substitute replacing Kelechi Iheanacho.

Maddison also only put pen to paper on a new contract at the King Power stadium last summer, with his new deal running until June 2024, and according to football.london it will take a fee in excess of £60million to prise him away from the Foxes.

Speaking on the Radio Goal broadcast on the Kiss Kiss Napoli station (via Area Napoli), journalist Valter De Maggio has shared that the central midfield player has told him that he will be staying at Goodison Park, and that he is ‘very happy’ there.

Allan ahs been linked with a move to Real Madrid in the summer window, to reunite with his former manager Carlo Ancelotti.

However, it seems as if he is set to stay at the Merseyside club, which has come as a welcome relief to several Toffees supporters, given how much of a key player he is for them.

In the 2020/21 season, the Brazilian played in 26 games in total, tending to start more often than not when he was available (Transfermarkt).
