Bringing back football is far too much of a risk right now

We’re almost 10 weeks into lockdown, it’s fair to say that the people in power haven’t handled the current pandemic in the best way possible.

Boris Johnson’s Conservative Party have quite simply done a dreadful job, with their original herd immunity policy, PPE troubles and unclear advice leading to the UK having the highest death toll in Europe.

Despite the government’s best efforts, things finally seem to be headed in the right direction with the number of casualties falling week by week, but we currently sit in a very precarious position.

The dreaded second wave could be just around the corner if people don’t carry on with the work they’ve been doing thus far, and if another spike occurs, we will be back to square one.

Discussions have been ongoing about the return of football in this country, and while we all would love to see the beautiful game return, it’s quite simply too soon for that to even be thought about.

The first round of testing happened this week with six members of staff out of 748 testing positive.

Those six will now self-isolate, and we will hope that the next round of testing comes back all clear, but even if it does, we can’t be absolutely certain that there’s no risk.

Tests for the virus currently have an accuracy of around 99.8%, and while that looks almost perfect, when 748 players and staff are being tested, it’s highly likely that one of them will be misdiagnosed, and it only takes one wrong call to spread illness amongst the entire league.

Away from the pitch, even though fans can’t get into the stadiums they will still want to celebrate their team’s achievements in whichever way they can.

Stories coming out each and every day of people flocking to beaches and parks, breaking the regulations, and the question has to be asked as to whether or not we can trust fans to not bend the rules.

Now, this shouldn’t be taken as an insult to the people of Leeds or Liverpool, with the Whites and the Reds both on course to achieve accolades they’ve been waiting decades for, it’s hard to imagine that a handful of impassioned fans will meet up with friends they’ve been going to games with year in year out in order to celebrate finally winning the league and finally getting back into the top flight.

Most would probably abide by the rules, but once again, it only takes a few outliers to kickstart a horrible cycle that could lead to someone’s death, and in any right-minded person’s view, finishing a season of football isn’t worth risking somebody’s life for.

Football will be back one day, and when it is we will all rejoice, but with hundreds of people still passing away from this virus each and every day, this is a risk not worth taking, not only for the players but for the fans.

Spurs to allow Danny Rose departure for cut price

Tottenham Hotspur could be willing to let Danny Rose leave the club for as little as £5m this summer, according to Football Insider.

What does the report say?

Rose has spent the second half of this season on loan at Newcastle United and could be set to depart on a permanent basis this summer.

According to Football Insider, Spurs could be willing to let him leave for £5m, with transfer fees set to fall in the current economic circumstances.

The North London club are said to have valued him at around £20m last summer, but could now be prepared to cut their losses.

With Rose’s deal set to expire in the summer of 2021, the report states that he is unlikely to play for the club again.

Sign of the times

Rose has been a good servant for Spurs but now looks set to depart on a permanent basis.

The current economic circumstances are something that football is going to have to adjust to and clubs will have to accept that players are going to worth far less than they were in the past.

With Newcastle set to have plenty of money to spend this summer the 29-year-old could stay at St James’ Park, while Watford are said to have shown an interest in him last year.

Leeds’ predicted XI to face Hull in the Championship

Games come thick and fast in the Championship, and that’s no different for Leeds United as they face another tough test just three days after playing Huddersfield Town.

Indeed, the Whites return to Elland Road to face Hull City on Tuesday evening, and after six wins in a row, you’d think that Marcelo Bielsa’s team pretty much picks itself by now.

However, there are changes to be made, and the Yorkshire outfit could line up in a different shape against the Tigers.

We’ve predicted that Leeds will revert back to the 4-1-4-1 formation that was popular with Bielsa earlier in the season due to the threat that Hull pose from the wings.

Jarrod Bowen and Kamil Grosicki are undoubtedly Hull’s two most important attacking players as they’ve contributed to 26 goals between them this term, and that means that Bielsa could revert back to a system that incorporates full-backs.

Now, the players that make up that backline are interesting. Luke Ayling doesn’t start in his normal right-back position as he’s been excellent at centre-half while playing in a back three and his performance on Saturday may have shown that he’s more than capable of playing there.

Ben White plays alongside Ayling while Ezgjan Alioski and Stuart Dallas move from midfield to full-back.

Kalvin Phillips returns in the holding midfield role after missing the Huddersfield game through suspension, while in front of him it’s more of the same again.

Mateusz Klich and Jack Harrison continue their streak of starting every game this term, and with Adam Forshaw and Tyler Roberts still out, Pablo Hernandez continues in the midfield.

Patrick Bamford starts once again, as does Helder Costa.

In other news, it seems as if Marcelo Bielsa has a new strategy when dealing with press conferences, and it’s working a treat.

Liverpool have asked about Internazionale’s Sebastiano Esposito

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

According to FCinternews.it, Liverpool have requested information about Sebastiano Esposito over the past 12 months.

What’s the story?

17-year-old Esposito has broken into the Internazionale first-team squad under Antonio Conte, with him having picked up five appearances already this campaign.

[ad_pod ]

As such, the Serie A side are looking to offer the striker a five-year contract to ward off international interest. PSG, Manchester United and Borussia Dortmund have all been mentioned alongside Liverpool as clubs who have been eyeing the teenager.

What message does it send to Brewster?

Italy U19 international Esposito is clearly a talent. Last season, he bagged 31 times for the club’s various youth teams, and also has two goals in three appearances for the Azzurri at his age level. Although the Italian side would look for a fee larger than his current Transfermarkt value of £4.5m, he would still come as something of a bargain.

However, Liverpool already have a youngster at their disposal who is waiting for his chance in the first team. Rhian Brewster was prevented from going out on loan during the summer despite asking Jurgen Klopp as the former Dortmund manager wanted him to be a part of his first-team squad. Up until now, he only has two appearances in all competitions this term, and there has even been talk of him making a loan move in January.

This, in itself, would be a change of tune from the 52-year-old boss. What kind of message would bringing in an unproven yet clearly talented youngster send to the 19-year-old Red? It would unlikely do his confidence, which has potentially already been hit, any good, and there is every chance he could be disillusioned moving forward.

It makes sense for the Anfield outfit to look towards the future, but that should not come at a detriment to those players already at their disposal. Considering Esposito has achieved nothing in the senior game, Liverpool would be best served giving this one a miss.

Meanwhile, Liverpool fans love one man’s performance against Napoli.

Newcastle’s Jamaal Lascelles has been one of their stand-out defenders this season

This article is part of Football FanCast’s In Numbers series, which takes a statistical look at performances, season-long form and reported transfer targets…

Jamaal Lascelles has appeared in every league game so far, and an injury which rules him out until early 2020 could have more of an impact on the team than fans realise.

Under Steve Bruce the Magpies have mostly looked solid at the back, only conceding two or more goals on four occasions in the league, and fans have been quick to praise the centre-backs at the club.

Fabian Schar, Federico Fernandez and Florian Lejeune are all admired amongst the fanbase, perhaps more so than the captain Lascelles, whose injury hasn’t caused much concern amongst the supporters.

There should be worry, though, as Lascelles’ solid performances have clearly been overlooked. Possibly this is because he is less adventurous on the ball in comparison to Schar, or hasn’t made as many tackles per game compared to his defensive teammates.

However, much of that is because the 26-year-old plays the central role in the centre-back trio, with much of his influence coming through his ability to lead and organise the team.

It will be interesting to see how the Magpies cope without that, and whether others will be able to step up in his place.

Watch Newcastle United Videos With StreamFootball.tv Below

He has shown that style frequently this season. As per WhoScored, he has made 4.9 clearances and 0.9 blocks per game, a combined total that is better than any other Newcastle defender, and amongst the highest of any defender outside the ‘top six’ clubs.

Lascelles’ efforts this term therefore warrant praise, and his injury issue shouldn’t be palmed off as inconsequential despite however good the alternatives may be.

A reason for fan confidence could be because of the organisation Bruce has brought to the backline, with the likes of Ciaran Clark and Paul Dummett slotting in with ease in recent games suggesting the sum is greater than its parts.

Nevertheless, it hasn’t had to cope without the figure of Lascelles yet, and didn’t for much of Rafa Benitez’s reign either, so his absence should provide a stern test of how far Newcastle have come under their new boss.

Nottingham Forest should heed warning and give Michael Dawson extra rest

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Not so soon.

There’s always an extra spice when it comes to Derby games, and that’s something that former Red Garry Birtles knows well. It’s something that could cause some problems for one player in particular.

What’s he said?

Speaking to Nottinghamshire Live, Birtles pointed out how the emotion gets to players and it can lead to some rather rash moments:

“We all know what these games meant to both clubs and both sets of supporters, and no doubt the opening exchanges will be chaotic as they usually are, so you hope that when things settle down, Forest’s ball players will take control and exert their authority over the Rams.”

Too fiery for some?

Birtles also recently spoke, again to Nottinghamshire Live, and he noted how important it is to not change a winning line up.

And that message doesn’t strike any truer than when it comes to Forest skipper Michael Dawson.

Whilst Birtles is on the money when it comes to not changing a team that won the last match, there’s something else that comes into the equation and that’s his injury. This is where the two stories come together.

The latest injury report lists Dawson as being available for the game this week, but it seems that a match like this, and particularly at this time of the season, would be one encounter too early for him to be making his comeback.

Not only will leaving him out of the clash take him out of the firing line from any rash challenges that might take place in the opening exchanges, but also give him that little bit of extra rest as he recovers from his calf injury.

Forest showed what time off can do for the team when they beat Luton Town last weekend, with Lewis Grabban scoring the opener after they’d previously had a game postponed.

With the international break just around the corner, it would be best if Lamouchi gave Dawson the week off and let him have that extra time away to make sure that he is at 100% when he comes back from injury.

Lamouchi has shown that he doesn’t have a lot of faith in Dawson’s backup Chema and Tobias Figueiredo by constantly swapping the two of them around in recent fixtures rather than sticking with one of them, so that proves just how important he is to the team.

Rather lose him for just one more game, than risk losing him for a lot more in the future.

Internazionale: Romelu Lukaku back from injury for Juventus clash

Romelu Lukaku will be available for Internazionale’s top-of-the-table clash against Juventus, according to Sky Sports Italia, via Calciomercato.

The striker missed the 2-1 Champions League loss against Barcelona, but will now be ready and available to play on Sunday, with Inter going into the game top of the league, two points ahead of the reigning champions.

Having Lukaku available is a definite boost for Inter, with the Belgium international having started 5 league games, coming off the bench once, scoring 3 goals in the process, as per WhoScored.

His record already includes a big goal, as he scored Inter’s second in their 2-0 victory over bitter rivals AC Milan with a well-placed header, as shown in the highlights video on the Serie A YouTube channel.

In addition to his goals, Lukaku has made 1.3 key passes and 0.7 dribbles per Serie A game, as well as averaging 4.5 aerial duels won and making 1 tackle per game – highlighting how much of a presence he is up front.

Inter will likely feel much more confident going into this game with Lukaku on the pitch, as they look to continue their perfect start to the Serie A campaign and break away from Juventus.

This is a massive game for the club, so they will certainly be looking towards Lukaku to make a difference on the day.

Man Utd fans have a laugh over Marcos Rojo’s failed rabona against Astana

[ad_pod ]

Oh Marcos Rojo. That’s exactly why you play at the back, my friend. The Argentina international probably grew up watching Diego Maradona tear things up with his skills and tricks, and thought ‘you know what? I’ll have some of that thank you very much’.

The 29-year-old was given a rare chance to start in Manchester United’s opening Europa League game of the season against FC Astana, and he made sure it was an occasion to remember for the tens of thousands in attendance.

Playing as a left-back, the former Sporting CP star cut inside on to his right foot just outside the opposition penalty area, and undoubtedly saw his name in lights. ‘This is it Marcos. Ballon d’Or incoming’.

Instead, the centre-back contrived to get his legs in a tangle, and saw his attempted rabona come cannoning off an Astana player. So much for that then.

After seeing the game’s true highlight of the evening (sorry Mason Greenwood), United fans flooded to Twitter to revel in Rojo’s genius.

Many Red Devils supporters took the proverbial mickey out of the Argentine, with one fan in particular suggesting he should re-name himself as “Rojodinho”.

Others showed him a bit more love, and insisted EA Sports give him five-star skills on the latest FIFA game.

Sheffield Wednesday boss Garry Monk on the right path with 4-4-2 system

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Garry Monk’s reign as Sheffield Wednesday boss extended to a third league game without defeat following their emphatic 4-1 victory over one of his former clubs, Middlesbrough.

The home side actually handed the Owls an early lead through Adam Clayton as his header soared past his own goalkeeper before centre-back Dominic Iorfa towered highest to double the advantage less than a minute later.

Paddy McNair netted one back for Boro, but that wasn’t enough as a goal-laden first half continued on.

Visiting winger Adam Reach fired in from just inside the area before Steven Fletcher picked up his fifth of the season in the 34th minute – surprisingly that would be the last goal of the match but nonetheless, a resounding victory for Monk and his men.

On the Chalkboard

In midweek, the 40-year-old had reverted to a 4-4-2 formation for the first time this season as they welcomed a strong Everton side to Hillsborough in the Carabao Cup.

Now the result might not have been what they wanted as they faced a 2-0 defeat, but they created several chances and even recorded more shots on goal than their Premier League opposition – despite making eight changes too.

Wednesday were far more clinical and ruthless on Saturday, converting all four of their shots on target, with Monk sticking with the formation he often deployed at Birmingham City.

It appears that this system could indeed be the right one to lead the Owls to success this season, they certainly have the strength in depth required to pull it off.

Watch Sheffield Wednesday Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

Atdhe Nuhiu partnered Steven Fletcher at the Riverside, and that resulted in a goal and an assist between them – but against different opposition, he also has Sam Winnall to call upon.

Out wide, Monk has a wealth of options with Adam Reach, Jacob Murphy and Kadeem Harris while in the centre, summer arrival Massimo Luongo and Joey Pelupessy offer healthy competition to stand-in skipper Barry Bannan and Sam Hutchinson.

The brainwave to revert to a 4-4-2 formation at just the right time may have been a blessing in disguise as Wednesday moved to just one point of the playoffs.
