Crystal Palace: The profile of replacement Steve Parish must seek after Roy Hodgson

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

They say good things don’t last forever.

In Crystal Palace’s case, good things can often be few and far between.

Entered into administration back in 2010. Lost a number of fan favourites such as Darren Ambrose, Nathaniel Clyne and Wilfried Zaha – before his 2014 return. A gutting FA Cup final defeat to Manchester United.

A constant roller-coaster ride in which the passengers on board have had little time to breathe and almost no chance to admire anything overly positive.

On the topic of Roy Hodgson’s tenure in SE25, this is something that can – contrastingly to the above – be viewed as a good thing.

Damien Delaney was a man who wore his heart on his sleeve and was also a player who the Selhurst Park faithful grew to love, and his comments to The Athletic on the 72-year-old manager speak volumes.

“Roy was, and is, such a good manager. Palace are extremely lucky to have a guy like him, anyone who complains about him… well, I’m not really sure what to tell them.

“But you should thank god or whoever put him at Palace and made him want to stay because every morning, they are so lucky. With Roy, the sky’s the limit. If you keep him in charge, the club will go on to very good things.”

And it seems that the enthusiasm for Hodgson is shared by the hierarchy at the club. According to the Daily Mail, Steve Parish has confirmed that the club have opened talks over an extension to his current deal, which expires in 2020.

When the time eventually arrives for Hodgson to move on, however, it should feel like a pivotal moment.

For years, Parish has been chopping and changing the man in the Selhurst Park hotseat – sometimes due to unforeseen circumstances, sometimes down to his own shortcomings.

Let’s start from promotion back in 2013.

Ian Holloway took the reins for just eight games in that first season back in the Premier League.

Tony Pulis replaced him until the start of the following campaign.

Neil Warnock then stepped in, lasting until the festive period of the following season.

Then Alan Pardew was his replacement, before being sacked in December of 2016.

Sam Allardyce came in to replace the former Palace midfielder, but lasted just a few months before resigning.

Then emerged Frank de Boer, whose spell in charge was even shorter – the Dutchman lasted for the duration of four league games and 77 days before Hodgson was appointed.

That is seven managers in six years – there has rarely been a moment to stop and make a considered appointment, with the majority of these bosses arriving mid-season or as a stop-gap.

The only moment in which Parish had a chance to actually appoint a measured figure who would be beneficial in the long term was the month and two days between Allardyce’s resignation and De Boer’s arrival, and look how that turned out.

Since Parish bought a stake in the club he supports to save them from administration back in 2010 – alongside the rest of the CPFC2010 contingent – he has not had a manager oversee more Palace matches than Hodgson.

Dougie Freedman oversaw 90 games. Hodgson’s last match was his 95th in charge.

That period between Allardyce’s exit and De Boer’s appointment was Parish’s first chance to steady the ship and make the right appointment. On that occasion, he failed.

However, Hodgson’s fine work over the last two years has enabled the Palace chairman to have another shot. It’s provided time to reflect and consider the future.

What the 54-year-old needs to do is think about the direction he now wants to take the club in.

It has already been reported by The Athletic that Parish and Freedman – now Head of Recruitment at Selhurst Park – are keen to sign players in their early 20s with a view to the future, while the same outlet has reported that Hodgson’s desire to work with ‘functional, experienced players who largely lack resale value’ may prove to put a spanner in the works of that vision, at least in the short-term.

A young, flexible and modern coach who can work with what he has upon his arrival, but also knows the profile of player he is after and the style of play he would like to implement for the future is key.

You look at managers such as Eddie Howe, Daniel Farke and Brendan Rodgers. They are people who have a clear philosophy and employ young players at the heart of their systems, such as Emiliano Buendia, James Maddison and Ryan Fraser, to name a few.

Signing players like Gary Cahill and appointing the Allardyce’s and Pardew’s of this world should be enough to keep Palace up year on year, but this is more about the direction in which Parish wants to take the club.

Hodgson’s work has enabled the Eagles chief to have another shot at the tough task, and Parish can’t afford to mess it up. There may not be another Hodgson-type fireman out there to spare his blushes and even if there is, hiring one would effectively be putting the sturdy foundations Hodgson has built to waste, pushing Palace back into the survival spiral.

With managers being discarded and cherry-picked from the conveyor belt on a regular basis, it’s become easy to label the modern game as chaotic and impulsive. But a football club executive’s revelation to The Athletic suggested that meticulous and extensive research goes into every managerial decision.

“I always have a working list of potential targets that is updated on a regular basis. The long list has somewhere in the region of 100 coaches on it, but then, that can be applied and reduced down depending on who it is you’re working for.

“The challenge is to ensure you’re looking at managers or coaches who fit the DNA of the club or national team.”

Palace fans better hope that Parish is adopting a comparable mindset.

Hodgson’s eventual exit represents a chance for Parish to take his beloved club to a higher echelon.

That transition must start with making the right choice of new man in the dugout.

Leeds’ Luke Ayling may find his spot in trouble after injury returns

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Leeds United are finally almost back to full strength.

It’s been a tough period for the Whites as they’ve been without a number of key players, but after Marcelo Bielsa confirmed that Liam Cooper and Jamie Shackleton are available for Saturday’s match against Sheffield Wednesday, United are just that much better off.

Of course, the return of these two players gives Marcelo Bielsa something to think about in his team selections, and there is one player whose spot should be under pressure.

On the chalkboard

With Shackleton back available for selection, Leeds could now stop playing Stuart Dallas out of position as a central midfielder, particularly as he came into the side when Adam Forshaw was first sidelined.

However, Dallas may be best off playing in that position this weekend, but going forward the youngster should return to the lineup.

This leaves Bielsa with another dilemma as he has to look at whether or not he wants the Northern Irishman to replace Luke Ayling at right-back.

With Dallas looking likely to retain his spot in the midfield this weekend, this may be Ayling’s last chance to prove that he should be starting at right-back over his teammate.

Remember the ‘golden goal’ rule? Find out why some fans want it back in the video below…

The full-back was panned after his performance against Preston North End, and another showing like that could see him lose his spot in the team.

Dallas didn’t really put a foot wrong during his stint at right-back during Ayling’s absence, earning copious amounts of praise in comparison to Ayling.

However, due to injuries in the midfield, Bielsa hasn’t had to choose between the pair since the former Bristol City man’s return.

With Shackleton now back, it’s only a matter of time before the manager has to make a choice at right-back, and unless the Englishman performs against the Owls his decision may be an easy one.

Man City star Rodri admits Liverpool are one of the best teams he has faced

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Manchester City’s Rodri has praised the managerial ability of Jurgen Klopp and describes Liverpool as a dangerous team who are very difficult to play against.

What did he say?

The Spain international has adjusted well to life in the Premier League, becoming a regular for Pep Guardiola, but he admitted that his experience of playing against Liverpool was not easy.

He points to the Reds’ style of play as the key factor in that, suggesting that their frantic closing down allows no time on the ball and restricts their opponent’s capabilities in possession.

The 23-year-old believes their strength in a number of areas is what makes them so effective, and was full of praise for Klopp’s side.

Speaking to The Daily Mail, he said: “I have touched down in England, and immediately found myself up against one of the best teams I have seen in recent years. They are strong. And not just on the counter-attack. They can dominate games and they can score from set-plays.

“He [Klopp] is a coach who works the defensive side of things very well but he also works the attacking mechanisms very hard too. His teams are very physical and very tough. They go at you like animals and that is what prevails in football right now.

“When we played the final of the Community Shield, we knew they were a team that is like a knife. One comes at you, then another and sometimes it seems like there is no escape. It’s a quality they have, that is clear.”

Respect from rivals

From his comments it would seem that Rodri is almost in awe of his title rivals, that is how devastating Liverpool have been this season and under Klopp in general.

He is not the only one, too, with Arsenal’s Dani Ceballos sharing a similar sentiment after visiting Anfield back in August.

Liverpool have now built up a psychological edge as much as anything and it is likely some opponents fear coming up against them, as they are unable to play their natural game and often end up getting dominated, as the Reds’ average possession of 57% would suggest.

Such an aura is familiar amongst title winners. Manchester United had that characteristic in the Ferguson era and now that Klopp has installed it at Liverpool, they have a great foundation to achieve their ambitions this season.

As well as that, their style means they can grind out wins even when their best players don’t perform to their usual standards, as evidenced against Sheffield United and Leicester, and that should give them the confidence to push on and continue their current run of brilliant form.

West Brom boss Slaven Bilic cost his side with Matt Phillips sub

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Off the Bench series, which places in-game managerial decisions and squad selections under FFC’s microscope.

West Brom’s impressive unbeaten start to life under Slaven Bilic in the Championship finally came to an end on Tuesday evening.

They faced their toughest test yet in Leeds United as Marcelo Bielsa’s men hold the best defensive record in the division, having conceded just five goals in ten matches.

The Whites came out on top with a 1-0 victory and leapfrogged the Baggies to first position in the table as Ezgjan Alioski’s deflected strike rebounded off Kyle Bartley into the bottom corner.

Albion had their chances, however, particularly in the second half as they put intense pressure on the home side by recording over 70% possession for the final half an hour of the match.

But Bilic’s men just couldn’t find a way through and one vital decision undoubtedly contributed to that.

Snapshot

In the 62nd minute, the Croatian made a double substitution.

On came his fellow countryman Filip Krovinovic and £8m summer signing Kenneth Zohore for Hal Robson-Kanu, who had made his first start of the season, and Matty Phillips.

Now, the Welshman’s contribution was weak considering he was dispossessed twice on top of picking up a yellow card but Phillips, on the other hand, was frequently looking like a potential source of trouble for Leeds.

Off the Bench

Krovinovic has shown previously why there are better options at the club with Matheus Pereira beginning to make that number ten position his own.

If Bilic thought he would have an impact that’s understandable, but Phillips shouldn’t have been withdrawn if they genuinely wanted to stage a comeback.

Per SofaScore, the 28-year-old registered 91% passing accuracy, two successful dribbles, and one key pass.

This would suggest he was a persistent threat along the right flank and considering he’s on for a career-best year under the stewardship of the Baggies boss, it was strange to see him substituted.

Phillips has scored four goals and assisted one more so far this season which makes him the top scorer amongst the West Brom squad – someone you should want on the pitch.

He was also handling his defensive duties well and against a team of Leeds’ style, that’s only a good thing.

The winger won six of his seven ground duels and made four tackles, which could mean he often got the better of his opposite number Alioski.

Southampton players flock to social media to show how much derby win means

[ad_pod ]Southampton played Portsmouth for the first time in eight years on Tuesday evening, and the latest instalment of the south-coast derby went exactly how the Saints would have wanted.Indeed, Southampton ran out 4-0 winners at Fratton Park, and even though many the current crop of players haven’t experienced a derby match before, they still took to social media to share how much it means to them.

You can see from the captions that the squad were buzzing to get one over their rivals in such emphatic fashion.

Of course, references were made to the atmosphere in the stadium, and due to the bitter hatred between the two clubs, Fratton Park was rocking on Tuesday.

It’s been so long since the Saints played Pompey that even their longest-serving player has never experienced this fixture.

Man City boss Pep Guardiola right to turn down chance to sign Philippe Coutinho

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

According to Spanish publication Marca, Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola “rejected” the chance to sign Philippe Coutinho this summer.

What’s the word?

The Brazil international was the subject of intense transfer speculation amid suggestions he could leave Barcelona following a disappointing spell in La Liga.

Reports had suggested the likes of Arsenal and Tottenham were keen on bringing him back to the Premier League, but the 27-year-old instead ended up joining Bavarian giants Bayern Munich on a season-long loan.

Watch Manchester City Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

Now, Marca claim City manager Guardiola turned down the opportunity to sign the playmaker when he was offered the chance to do so.

The right choice

For all of Coutinho’s undoubted abilities, the Brazilian would simply have been a waste of money for City. Guardiola’s outfit are blessed with incredible squad depth in the position the Brazilian has publicly admitted he prefers. The number ten department at the Etihad is well-stocked with the likes of Kevin De Bruyne, David Silva, Bernardo Silva and Phil Foden, amongst others, all more than capable playmakers in the central position.

On top of that, Guardiola often uses those playmakers as midfielders in a central trio, and Coutinho likely doesn’t offer the work rate or defensive protection the Spaniard would expect in that role.

Swooping for Coutinho on a ridiculously expensive loan deal – let alone a permanent switch – would have made no logical sense. The 27-year-old would most probably have blocked the path of Foden and stopped the talented teenager from getting valuable first-team minutes. The City academy product has already shown he can be a major player for the side even at such a young age.

The Etihad side have never been reluctant to splash the cash over the years, but Guardiola’s cautiousness over Coutinho should be applauded.

Wolves fans drool over Joao Moutinho on his birthday

[ad_pod ]

Joao Moutinho turned 33 on Sunday, and as expected, Wolverhampton Wanderers’ official Twitter account was on hand with a birthday message.

The midfielder, who joined Wolves from Monaco in the summer of 2018, has made 54 appearances for his English club in all competitions.

The Portugal international will see his current deal expire at the end of the season, though, and there are no signs of a fresh contract for the moment.

In response to Wolves’ official post, a number of the fans called for their club to sort out an extension for Moutinho as soon as possible.

Meanwhile, others simply took the chance to lavish praise on the experienced professional – some calling him the best player to ever play for the club.

It will certainly be interesting to see what happens with the midfielder’s future as he is very much a key player at Molineux.

Everton boss Marco Silva needs to drop Richarlison and Gylfi Sigurdsson on Friday

[ad_pod ]

During the 2018/19 campaign Everton manager Marco Silva perhaps didn’t always have the quality in depth to change things when it came to selecting his attacking options, but it’s a different story now.

The summer transfer window saw two players good enough to start in Alex Iwobi and Moise Kean arrive at Goodison Park, leaving the Portuguese boss with more scope to make alterations when things aren’t going as well as he would have hoped.

On the wings, he now has Bernard, Richarlison, Iwobi and Theo Walcott to choose from, while as things stand he has Kean, Calvert-Lewin and Cenk Tosun to pick from up top.

In terms of the No.10 role, Gylfi Sigurdsson now has further competition from Iwobi who can also play through the centre.

The Iceland international joined from Swansea City in a £45m deal in the summer of 2017, while Richarlison followed Silva to Merseyside in another big-money move which was worth an initial £35m.

Two expensive players, but two that have struggled during the 2019/20 Premier League campaign so far.

Against both Crystal Palace and Watford, Richarlison had three shots with none of them being on target, while his passing accuracy was an abysmal 35.7% against the latter at the weekend.

Meanwhile, Sigurdsson missed an absolute sitter against the Eagles as he scuffed an opportunity wide, while The Liverpool Echo said that he never really managed to get a foothold on the game against Javi Gracia’s men.

The fact of the matter is that so far in the top flight in 2019, the duo have scored five and four goals and for two players in key attacking positions in the XI, that isn’t good enough for a club with big ambitions.

Watch Everton Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

Now Silva has Iwobi, Kean, Calvert-Lewin and Walcott, he needs to make the call to take two out-of-form players out of the limelight against Aston Villa on Friday.

The former has said previously that he prefers to play in the centre so can be given a chance in the No.10 role, while the latter will surely have a big point to prove.

Despite his troubles last term when he came under criticism from the Goodison Park faithful on Twitter, could Walcott really be any less effective than Richarlison right now?

Rangers fans react as Jon Flanagan makes excellent return

[ad_pod ]

Jon Flanagan made his return from injury in Rangers’ impressive 4-2 win away at FC Midtjylland on Thursday night.

Rangers fans were delighted to see Flanagan back in the starting XI for their Europa League qualifier and it’s safe to say he didn’t disappoint.

It was a hectic 90 minutes that saw Steven Gerrard’s men earn a great advantage ahead of the return leg at Ibrox next week. Goals from Alfredo Morelos, Joe Aribo, Nikola Katic and Scott Arfield gave the Gers a more than handy lead in the penultimate round before the group stages.

Flanagan was making his first start of the season after a groin injury kept him out for pre-season, and he caught the eye of the supporters.

The former Liverpool full-back filled in on the left-hand side of defence as Borna Barisic dropped out after starting the season woefully.

The 26-year-old’s no-nonsense, physical style has enamoured him to the fans, not just against the Danes but throughout his time in the Light Blue jersey.

Here’s what the supporters had to say about his return on Twitter…
