Klopp suffers Henderson injury blow

Jurgen Klopp looks to have been handed another injury blow ahead of his side’s trip to Old Trafford in the FA Cup fourth round on Sunday, with Jordan Henderson reportedly unlikely to feature through injury.

The Liverpool captain was ruled out of the game in midweek against Burnley with a muscle strain and was certainly missed, as the Reds saw their long unbeaten home run come to an end at the hands of Sean Dyche’s side.

Goal have now reported that the 30-year-old is unlikely to feature against Manchester United this weekend, which is undoubtedly a huge blow for Klopp’s side.

The Reds lacked any sort of real fight or leadership against Burnley on Thursday, something you surely feel that Henderson would have provided himself, and would have demanded from his teammates if he were on the pitch.

In the absence of Virgil van Dijk, it could certainly be argued that the Reds are lacking any leaders on the pitch when the former Sunderland man doesn’t play, so not having either at Old Trafford could be a recipe for disaster.

The England international played as a centre-back for the visit of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side earlier this month and impressed against the dangerous front three, but it appears the Reds will be without his experience in midfield for the FA Cup tie.

Fortunately for Klopp, he does now have Joel Matip back fit, so he can partner Fabinho in defence, but the Reds will certainly miss Henderson’s experience in midfield if he cannot feature on Sunday.

The German manager has emphasised the importance of his captain in the past, saying:

If anybody who is with us still doesn’t see the quality of Jordan Henderson, then I cannot help them.

“Is Hendo the perfect football player? No. Do I know anybody who is? No. But is he unbelievably important to us? Yes.”

Therefore, it comes as a huge blow for Liverpool that he is unlikely to feature at Old Trafford on Sunday, as he could have been the catalyst for the Reds turning their disappointing form around with a morale-boosting FA Cup win against their old rivals.

Rangers must sign Ben Davies

According to Football Insider, Glasgow Rangers target Ben Davies has rejected a club-record deal from Preston North End.

What’s the word?

The English centre-back has been one of the standout performers for the Championship outfit but now seems destined for a Deepdale exit.

Steven Gerrard has got the Gers far ahead of their arch-rivals in the Scottish Premiership title race and may look for January additions to keep them there and Rangers could trump their bitter rivals Celtic to the signing of the talented Davies during the transfer window.

Steal a march on Celtic

The Light Blues are in the market for a new centre-back whilst Neil Lennon’s side have their own problems at the back, having shipped 15 goals in 19 games so far.

Gerrard’s Gers have a number of senior players who are out of contract at the end of this season, and though the Rangers manager has insisted that he isn’t looking to sell right now, players such as outcasts George Edmundson and Jordan Jones could be heading for the Ibrox exit in January.

Should such a possibility arise, a bid for Davies could be on the cards with the 25-year-old’s contract set to expire in June this year.

Preston boss Alex Neil has previously heaped praise on the wantaway defender, describing him as a “fantastic” beast after the 2-1 victory over Bristol City back in 2017, whilst former Rangers full-back Alan Hutton recently told Football Insider he “ticks all the boxes.”

Gerrard could cover most of his bases at the back with a versatile player who can play in the centre or on the left if he can convince Ross Wilson to dip into the market.

Davies has made 15 appearances in the Championship this season, picking up one assist, whilst he is currently averaging 1.2 tackles, 1.5 interceptions and 4.3 clearances on average per game, via WhoScored.

As the Gers seek to stop Celtic from winning ten in a row, the recruitment of Davies could be a good bit of business. Stealing him from right under Celtic’s nose would be the icing on the cake.

Biden may play small role in takeover

President Joe Biden may play a small role in the final outcome of the proposed £300m takeover of Newcastle United by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) group, as outlined in a report by The Chronicle.

As per the North Est media outlet, confirmation is needed as to whether beIN is being broadcast again in the Kingdom after some conflicting reports, and if it is confirmed that it is, then the suspension of the disputes between both the KSA and Qatar may follow.

The World Trade Organization (WTO) had previously ruled in favour of the latter in terms of privacy issues, which saw the Saudis broadcast and stream games from the Premier League illegally to their residents, given that beIN Sports are the sole rights holders for these matches in the Gulf region.

An appeal against this verdict was then launched in the KSA, and if the Qataris do not request for the dispute to be suspended, then that appeal would continue to sit on hold until President Biden reverses the decision from Donald Trump to veto any votes of new judges onto the appeal body.

What next for the possible Newcastle takeover?

If there is confirmation of beIN being broadcast again in the KSA, then it is surely a step in the right direction in terms of the longer aim of getting a prospective takeover of Newcastle back on track.

Such a resolution would ease the tensions between the Saudis and the Premier League over piracy issues and could lead to a potential revival of the deal between Mike Ashley and the KSA consortium in the long term.

Leeds’ decision to ditch Douglas has been justified

Promotion to the Premier League is always exciting, but there is always a dark side to going up.

Indeed, as you ascend to the top-flight, the team needs to evolve and adapt and that often means some fan favourites missing out on the chance to play Premier League football.

In Leeds United’s case, they had to make a cut-throat call on Barry Douglas, sending him out on loan to Blackburn Rovers this season. With his contract up next summer, it seems unlikely that he’s going to get another go at Elland Road.

Douglas’ departure seems like it was a tough choice to make for Victor Orta, with the Spaniard even penning an open letter to him after he left, while Marcelo Bielsa also paid tribute to him.

However, after just 151 minutes of playing for Blackburn, it’s become very clear why United wanted rid of the Scot.

Indeed, despite the fact that Douglas has been described as a ‘top player’ in the past, it’s been quite evident that he doesn’t have what it takes to be a star at Premier League level.

In fact, it looks as though he’s even going to struggle at Championship level, he was absolutely woeful as Blackburn conceded four against Reading in midweek.

He was a part of a defence that shipped four goals and he made one error leading to a goal.

Ok, he made four tackles, but that wasn’t enough to stop the Reading onslaught and his WhoScored rating of just 5.83 underlines what was an all-round poor showing.

United’s decision to ditch Douglas in the summer must have been a tough one to make, but it seems as though it is a decision that has paid off.

Fortunately, Douglas is making those errors with Blackburn rather than with Leeds.

Aston Villa must give "outstanding" Louie Barry a chance this season

From West Brom, to Barcelona, to Aston Villa. At only 17 years of age, it’s already been quite the journey for Louie Barry, and one that Dean Smith and co will no doubt be the biggest beneficiaries of over the coming seasons.

The teenager started off his youth career at the Hawthorns, before a high-profile switch to Barcelona saw him become the first ever English player to join the Catalan giants’ famed La Masia academy.

Having only spent a few months at the Camp Nou, Villa made their move to bring the club’s boyhood fan back home, and the club’s academy manager, Mark Harrison, wasn’t shy in waxing lyrical about the starlet.

He said: “It (Louie’s signing) sends a powerful message about the ambition of this football club. We’re delighted – Louie is a local person and his family are all Villa fans, as is Louie. He is still a very young man but as he’s developed, he’s always been one player that you always recognise as having outstanding attributes. He’s got a fantastic mentality, he’s desperate to do well for this football club.

“He’s really driven, he’s got great family support, but in terms of what he can achieve, we firmly believe that he can be an outstanding number nine for this football club.”

Quite the lofty statement, but it is an indication of just how highly Villa rate Barry. Across Europe, another young striker is making his mark on the biggest stage: Borussia Dortmund’s Erling Braut Haaland.

The Norway international has been lighting up the Bundesliga despite only turning 20 a couple of months ago, and if anything, gives Villa a real comparison for the kind of meteoric rise a young player can enjoy if given the chance.

The fact Barry spent some time at Barcelona has already exposed him to a different culture, and at a club that demands a certain standard of its young players. That will hold him in good stead at Villa, and with Smith potentially facing a shortage of striking options, he could find his opportunity sooner rather than later.

Haaland is the bench-mark at the moment. But if Villa trust in the process, then they may not have to look very far for their own.

And in other news, this Aston Villa new boy may be better value for money than Ollie Watkins.
