He’s outscoring Solanke: Spurs almost signed unreal PL Golden Boot winner

After finishing in fifth place last season, there was a hope from fans that Tottenham Hotspur would be able to go kick on this year, a hope that remains very much unrealised.

Instead of fighting for a Champions League place, Ange Postecoglou’s side sit in the bottom half of the Premier League table with more losses than wins, and a big reason for that is their incredible bad luck with injuries.

The North Londoners have missed practically their entire backline for much of the campaign and are now without top scorer Brennan Johnson and record-signing Dominic Solanke.

The English forward has been brilliant for the Lilywhites this season, but interestingly, he’s being outscored by another former Premier League superstar who almost signed for Tottenham over ten years ago.

Spurs' best attackers in 2024/25

While defence has undoubtedly been a major problem for Spurs this season, largely thanks to injuries, the team have still been a relatively potent attacking force for much of the campaign, as demonstrated by their 48 league goals, a tally only bettered by Arsenal and Liverpool.

The most prolific player for Ange this year has been Johnson, who, after a slow start to the campaign that saw him deactivate his Instagram account due to fan abuse, has racked up a stellar haul of 12 goals and three assists in 32 appearances, only 22 of which have been starts.

Close behind the Welshman is the club’s £65m man, Solanke, who, in his first campaign for the North Londoners, has already scored 11 goals and provided six assists in just 33 appearances, which comes out to an average of a goal involvement every 1.94 games.

The only other player in the squad to have reached double figures for goals this term is Son Heung-min, who has found the back of the net on ten occasions and provided eight assists, for good measure, all in just 33 games.

The top five is rounded out by Dejan Kulusevski, who has produced 19 goal involvements in 39 games, and James Maddison, who has managed to rack up nine goals and six assists in his 31 appearances thus far, of which only 21 have been starts.

In all, despite their lacklustre form this season, Spurs do have several incredibly talented attackers to choose from when all fit. However, for all his hard work, Solanke is being outscored by a former Premier League star who almost signed for the club in the past.

One that got away

The free-scoring forward Spurs almost signed

As with practically every major club, there are always countless examples of players they could have signed in the past who go on to great things down the line.

However, in this instance, Spurs had to watch Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang take the Premier League by storm and win an FA Cup with Arsenal years after they passed up on the chance to bring him to the white side of North London.

The “tremendous” Gabonese international, as dubbed by Arsene Wenger, was shown around the club in 2012 but was never contacted afterwards.

According to former Spurs player Ronny Rosenthal, who was working with the striker at the time, then-manager André Villas-Boas made the decision not to pursue him.

In the decade and a bit since, the Laval-born superstar has gone on to score 141 goals in 213 games for Dortmund, 92 goals in 163 games for the Gunners, where he picked up a Premier League Golden Boot and FA Cup, 13 goals in 24 games for Barcelona, three goals in 21 games for Chelsea, 30 goals in 51 games for Marseille and now 12 goals in 20 games for AL-Qadsiah in Saudi Arabia.

That means the “unreal” goal machine, as dubbed by journalist Jonas Adnan Giæver, is currently outscoring Solanke at the ripe old age of 35, and while it is undoubtedly a lower standard than in England, you only need to look at his sensational tally in France last season to see that he could still get the job done in a top five league.

Ultimately, Spurs won’t be losing any sleep over not signing Aubameyang back in 2012, especially not when a certain Harry Kane would soon emerge.

That said, it’s interesting to imagine what it would have been like to see him in the white half of North London and not the red.

Jack Taylor leads Gloucestershire to derby win in Bristol

Captain hits 77 not out after taking 4 for 31 as Somerset slip to defeat

Jack Taylor made match-winning contributions with bat and ball as Gloucestershire carved out a hard-earned five-wicket win over arch rivals Somerset in a low-scoring Royal London One-Day encounter at Bristol’s Seat Unique Stadium.Gloucestershire’s captain returned figures of 4 for 31 with his legbreaks and then made an unbeaten 77 as the home side chased down a victory target of 200 with 7.1 overs to spare in front of a modest but enthusiastic derby crowd.Somerset won the toss, posted 57 without loss in 10 overs and then inexplicably slumped to 112 for 7, one batter after another giving their wicket away cheaply. Lewis Goldsworthy mustered a defiant 66, hewn from 103 balls with two fours, but the visitors were bowled out for 199 in 47.4 overs, with slow left-armer Tom Smith taking 2 for 29 in support of Taylor.Related

Australian Test batter Marcus Harris proved the mainstay of Gloucestershire’s reply, raising 59 from 90 balls on a typically slow Bristol pitch, before Taylor and Zafar Gohar finished the job off. Kasey Aldridge was the pick of the Somerset bowlers, claiming 2 for 43.Following back-to-back defeats at the hands of Warwickshire and Sussex, Gloucestershire will be relieved to have finally broken their duck, even though the contest will scarcely live long in the memory of those who witnessed it. As for Somerset, they will go into Wednesday’s home game against Durham seeking a first win in three attempts after another disappointing batting display. There was no sign of the trouble that lay ahead as Matt Renshaw and Steve Davies staged a productive opening stand of 57 in 10.2 overs, justifying the decision to bat first. Aggressive from the outset, Renshaw cut and pulled to good effect in making 38 from 45 balls, including five fours and a six, smashed high over long-on at the expense of Zafar. But the Australian flirted with danger outside off stump and twice survived confident caught behind appeals before eventually edging Jared Warner to James Bracey. The introduction of spin from both ends yielded instant dividends thereafter, experienced campaigners Davies and James Hildreth both falling to poor shots in successive overs as the visitors lurched from 72 for 1 to 75 for 3 in the space of seven deliveries. Taylor and Smith both struck with their first balls, the former inducing Davies to hit a full toss to Oli Price at cover for 18 and the latter bowling Hildreth for 1, the batter guilty of an airy shot outside off stump.Somerset contributed further to their own downfall, new batter George Bartlett being comprehensively run out by Chris Dent for seven after being sent back by Goldsworthy in pursuit of a notional single. Having made such a promising start, the cider county had lost four wickets for the addition of 34 runs in 10 overs, in the process offering Gloucestershire a way back into the contest.Academy product James Rew then attempted to sweep Taylor and was caught by Bracey down the leg side, while Ben Green played an ill-advised forcing shot and was held by the diving Price at mid-on as Somerset subsided 111 for 6 in the 27th over.Worse followed when Aldridge missed a straight ball on off stump and was bowled by Pakistani slow left-armer Zafar, at which point Goldsworthy represented Somerset’s last realistic hope of posting a competitive score. In danger of running out of partners and forced by the parlous situation in which he found himself to be circumspect, the 21-year-old Cornishman played responsibly to chisel 50 from 81 balls. He found a willing ally in Siddle, the eighth wicket pair adding 67 in 16 overs to at least partially rebuild the innings. The sole contributor of boundaries during his sojourn in the middle, Siddle struck a straight six and a brace of fours before playing across the line and being bowled by Taylor for 29.Taylor completed his stint by bowling Goldsworthy in the 46th over and Paul van Meekeren accounted for Jack Brooks as Somerset were dismissed with 14 balls unused.Somerset had no option but to press hard for early wickets and new ball bowlers Aldridge and Brooks obliged, sweeping aside openers Chris Dent (3) and Ben Wells (15) respectively inside six overs. Siddle produced late swing to bowl Bracey for 15 and, when Price suffered a rush of blood to the head and hoisted Goldsworthy’s slow left-arm straight to deep mid-wicket, Gloucestershire were 69 for 4 and experiencing a degree of discomfiture.A calming influence in the middle, overseas star Harris offered reassurance, staging a restorative stand of 75 in 18 overs for the fifth wicket with skipper Taylor, who initially suppressed his naturally attacking instincts to play the supporting role that was the order of the day. Harris registered 50 from 82 deliveries, only to then spoon a slower ball from Aldridge to backward point with Gloucestershire in need of 56 more runs from 15.3 overs and the result still in doubt.Dropped on 10 by Renshaw at slip off the bowling of Green, Zafar made good his escape to score 18 not out, while Taylor went to an 83-ball 50 with a huge six over long-on off the same bowler to calm any lingering nerves.

Quero jogar no Morumbi, quero estar aqui. O São Paulo é a minha casa, onde me sinto bem, me sinto feliz – afirmou Diego na ocasião.

Imagine him & Philogene: Ipswich chase £15m "dream" Igor Jesus upgrade

Much like the first transfer window Ipswich Town found themselves involved in after promotion, this January window looks set to be a busy one for the relegation-threatened side.

After all, this drawn-out month gives them a fantastic opportunity to recruit fresh blood that can help in their ongoing quest to stay put in the Premier League.

Already, Ipswich have signed Ben Godfrey on a loan deal to bolster defensively, with rumours now focusing in on the exciting Suffolk side adding in more firepower up top.

Ipswich's search for a striker

It looks as if Godfrey won’t be the only confirmed signing this early into January either, with Jaden Philogene reportedly joining the building for a £20m fee from Aston Villa to gift McKenna’s men a daring option down the right wing.

Ipswich aren’t done there, however, with the Premier League minnows still in the hunt for Middlesbrough sharp shooter Emmanuel Latte Lath, despite GIVEMESPORT recently revealing that Leeds United are out in front in attempting to land the clinical Ivorian.

Middlesbrough's Emmanuel Latte Lath shoots at goal as Burnley'sJamesTraffordmakes a save

The Whites are now considering lodging a £15m bid to try and win the Boro number nine, but Ipswich won’t be fazed by this new development, hoping that the allure of top-flight football could sway Latte Lath into calling Portman Road his next home before the February deadline is up.

Latte Lath could well strike up a devastating attacking duo with Philogene if a deal is reached, with the tricky winger a superstar in the Championship with Hull City last season, and will now be ready – like his Boro counterpart – to now take the division above by storm.

What Latte Lath could offer Ipswich

Away from Ipswich potentially splashing the cash recklessly on Igor Jesus to join from Botafogo for £30m, the Tractor Boys would win themselves a better bargain for their buck with Latte Lath, considering he is already a potent attacker in the English game.

It would all depend though on whether or not the 26-year-old would be able to handle the step-up, but when you glance at his goalscoring numbers in the EFL to date.

26 of Latte Lath’s strikes for Michael Carrick’s men have come in the bread and butter of the second tier, with ten league goals coming his way this 2024/25 so far to alert teams to his services.

Jesus, meanwhile, has scored just eight times in 31 games for his current side, while there is less risk involved in Latte Lath’s signing considering his lesser price tag, and his blistering numbers to date playing on English shores means he could settle in well to McKenna’s group as another option away from Liam Delap just leading the line.

Equally, as indicated above, Latte Lath also comes out on top with regard to goals per 90, while he also seemingly offers a great physical presence as the first line of defence, as showcased by his superior record with tackles, interceptions and aerial duels won.

With the pair operating in similar level leagues – with the Championship and Brazilian Serie A classed among the ‘next 14 competitions’, outside of Europe’s top five leagues – it does illustrate just what an upgrade the Boro man would be on his Botafogo counterpart.

Likewise, Philogene will pray he finally gets his chance to impress in the big-time at Ipswich, having been used infrequently by Unai Emery at Villa Park.

Indeed, the ex-Hull ace has only been thrown in from the start in league action this season two times, despite setting the second tier alight last campaign at the Tigers.

There was, of course, this outrageous strike that went viral for looping over the Rotherham United goalkeeper’s head, with Philogene registering 12 goals and six assists overall in the Championship.

With a spot down the right wing more open, owing to Wes Burns being the only fit option currently, the reserve Villa figure could become a main spark in the first team when making the switch to Suffolk.

Latte Lath – who was once described as being a “dream to play with” by Boro teammate Luke Ayling – will hope his fair share of first-team opportunities comes about if he joins, with the pair potentially making Ipswich even more threatening in attack ahead of tough games to follow near the foot of the league.

Junto a Pablo Maia, o camisa 9 rompeu a invencibilidade do rival.

As well as Diaz: Slot must drop Liverpool man who lost 75% duels

Liverpool battled several adversities to avoid a defeat in a hard-fought 2-2 draw with Marco Silva’s Fulham at Anfield in the Premier League on Saturday.

The away side took the lead Andreas Pereira in the 11th minute before Andy Robertson was sent off for taking down Harry Wilson as the last man in the 17th. Arne Slot’s side reacted well to those setbacks, though, and equalised through Cody Gakpo just after the break.

Fulham battled their way back in front through Rodrigo Muniz, only for Slot’s super substitute Diogo Jota to come off the bench to score a late equaliser.

Whilst it was a decent point, given the circumstances after Robertson’s red card, there were some underwhelming performers for the Reds, including Luis Diaz.

Luis Diaz's performance against Fulham

The Colombia international was selected to lead the line for Liverpool, ahead of Darwin Nunez and Jota, and failed to offer enough to the team at the top end of the pitch.

He did compete well on the physical side of the match, winning two of his four ground duels and both of his aerial contests, and this meant that the forward was not bullied by the Fulham defenders.

However, Diaz only completed 79% of his attempted passes and made one key pass, without creating a ‘big chance’ for his teammates, and this shows that he struggled to provide much in the way of creativity.

Liverpool star Luis Diaz

The 27-year-old attacker was also wasteful in front of goal. He missed one ‘big chance’ and failed to convert his 0.64 xG (over two shots) to find the back of the net.

Slot must drop him for the substitute goalscorer Jota on Wednesday night in the League Cup against Southampton, and another player who should instantly be binned from the starting XI is central midfielder Curtis Jones.

Curtis Jones' performance against Fulham

The Liverpool academy graduate got the nod alongside Ryan Gravenberch and Dominic Szoboszlai in the middle of the park, and struggled in and out of possession.

Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones celebrates

Jones was not strong enough to compete against the Fulham players as he lost 75% (3/4) of his duels throughout his time on the pitch, which shows that it was too easy for opposition players to get the better of him.

It was not only his play out of possession that left a lot to be desired, though, as the England international also failed to create a single chance for his teammates.

As you can see in the table above, his partners in midfield both significantly outperformed him from a defensive perspective, whilst Szoboszlai was the main creative threat in there for Slot.

With this performance, and with it being a midweek cup game, in mind, the Dutch head coach must consider instantly dropping the Liverpool lightweight down to the bench for the clash with the Saints on Wednesday, due to his struggles on and off the ball.

Man City willing to submit first offer to sign £15m Premier League gem

Looking ahead to the future rather than the frustrating reality that they currently find themselves in, Manchester City are now reportedly willing to submit an opening offer to sign a Premier League gem in 2025.

Man City transfer news

Of course, injuries have far from helped their case, but there is no escaping the fact that this is an ageing Man City squad. A number of players are creeping past their best form simultaneously, whilst club captain Kyle Walker looks a shadow of the Premier League champion he was just last season.

When the summer transfer window arrives, those at the Etihad must welcome several reinforcements for Pep Guardiola.

Just who those reinforcements are exactly remains to be seen, but recent reports have at least dropped a few hints. Names such as Viktor Gyokeres and even Trent Alexander-Arnold have been mentioned in what would be a move to send shockwaves through the Premier League. But before the Citizens splash out, they could welcome a star for the future.

Liverpool's Trent Alexander-Arnold

According to reports in Spain, Manchester City are now willing to make an opening offer to sign youngster Jeremy Monga from Leicester City. Just 15 years old, the teenager is reportedly worth as much as £15m in what is an incredibly hefty fee at such an age.

With Chelsea also interested in his signature, though, Leicester could fuel quite the battle.

Man City entertaining idea of signing "promising" ace as soon as January

The Premier League champions desperately need a defensive rebuild.

1 ByTom Cunningham Dec 7, 2024

If you look around European football, it is littered with Manchester City academy graduates, from Jadon Sancho and Cole Palmer to high-flying Jamie Gittens. So even if the path from their academy isn’t always into Guardiola’s side, there is a trend of success stories after developing at the Etihad – a narrative that Monga could become the latest to write.

Monga should heed McAtee warning

At 15, Monga should be in no rush to make his decision. The pathway is there to take hold of at Leicester, where he has a greater chance of eventually receiving first-team minutes.

Meanwhile, even in Manchester City’s current state, it would be incredibly difficult for any young player to work their way into Guardiola’s side – just ask James McAtee.

The midfielder impressed on loan at Sheffield United last season but has since struggled to break into Guardiola’s plans on a consistent basis.

Given their current crisis – especially in midfield – it seemed as though McAtee would finally get a chance. However, that has not proved to be the case, and the 22-year-old now looks destined to depart.

It’s a warning that Monga should consider. Whilst Phil Foden represents a true success story from the academy, it’s difficult to pick any other young players who have been handed such a chance before being discarded around European football.

Palmer, Gittens and Sancho all enjoyed their success away from Manchester City and Monga may well be best off skipping a move to the Etihad altogether.
