Crystal Palace: Journalist hints at behind-scenes Dean Henderson claim

Crystal Palace were busy late in the summer transfer window, but it may have created a problem for manager Roy Hodgson.

The Eagles announced the signing of Dean Henderson from Manchester United in the final few days, for a reported fee of around £20m including add-ons.

The 26-year-old glovesman spent last season on loan at Premier League newcomers Nottingham Forest, although a thigh injury picked up in January cut his season short.

Despite his sizable price tag, the competition at Palace leaves no guarantee that Henderson will walk straight into the starting eleven.

Ahead of the recent fixture with Wolves, manager Hodgson said he now has two “top, top-class goalkeepers” in Henderson and fellow Englishman Sam Johnstone.

Hodgson followed up with this by naming Johnstone in the starting eleven for the Wolves fixture, while Henderson watched on from the sidelines, raising the question among many fans on how the new signing will be able to earn his place ahead of his competition.

Now, journalist Dean Jones has revealed the latest on Henderson’s position at Crystal Palace speaking to GIVEMESPORT.

What did Dean Jones reveal about Henderson’s position?

Jones has explained the current goalkeeper situation at Palace, claiming Henderson will have to “properly fight” if he wants to take the spot from Johnstone

.

He said:

“I don't think [Henderson] will win the battle soon. I think that from everything I understand at Crystal Palace, he has to properly fight Johnstone for this number one shirt.

“I'm not sure Roy Hodgson particularly likes the idea of having a full-on goalkeeper battle for an entire season.

“He likes to have a tried and tested system, particularly defensively, so that everybody understands their roles and each other.

“I don't really know how this is going to play out in terms of having two goalkeepers that really want to be playing week in, week out going up against each other.

“But from everything I understand, for the foreseeable future, Johnstone is going to be the guy starting.”

What next for Henderson?

The update may be of a slight concern to Henderson, who could now find himself in a similar position to the one he was in at Old Trafford, having to be a backup to the no.1.

This topic was brought up in his first interview with the club following his arrival and when asked about any prior relationships with the current squad, Henderson responded that he and Johnstone are both “great friends” and will “support each other” regardless of who gets the nod in goal.

While it is of course too early to make conclusions, it would certainly surprise fans should Henderson be used primarily as a backup keeper after joining for a sizable transfer fee, and he can expect to earn the right to play by performing when given the opportunities.

The shot-stopper has also made his intentions clear that he wants to impress England boss Gareth Southgate ahead of next summer’s European Championship tournament, having lost his place in the national team with Jordan Pickford, Aaron Ramsdale and Nick Pope all ahead of him.

Vijay Shankar, Aparajith tons bolster TN

Centuries from Vijay Shankar and Baba Aparajith headlined Tamil Nadu‘s second day in Cuttack as the duo put on 177 for the fifth wicket to bolster their first-innings total to 530 for 8 dec against Odisha.Building on from the team’s overnight score of 292 for 3, Shankar motored on to notch up his fifth first-class hundred after losing his overnight partner Baba Indrajith (46) inside three overs of the morning session. Aparajith then joined in the action and waltzed to a ton of his own – his second this Ranji season – steering the team past 475. Both of them hit nine fours and a six each, before Shankar and No. 7 batsman Washington Sundar fell within the space of 3.2 overs only minutes before tea. Seamer Suryakant Pradhan added two wickets – including that of Indrajith’s – to his lone scalp from day one, while Biplab Samantray took out Shankar and Yo Mahesh. In response, Odisha openers Sandeep Pattnaik and Natraj Behera saw off 13 overs of the new ball with unbeaten scores of 15 and 17 at stumps.A 158-run stand between Ricky Bhui and DB Prashanth helped Andhra post 402 even as Tripura‘s 20-year-old medium-pacer Abhijit Sarkar snared a five-for to bowl the opposition in 144 overs. While Bhui struck a 74, Prashant could only add 13 to his overnight score of 120. Sarkar accounted for both en route to his second five-wicket haul this season, as well as Ashwin Hebbar (43). All of the other four bowlers employed by captain Manisankar Murasingh picked up at least one wicket.Tripura struggled early in their response, with Bandaru Ayyappa claiming Bishal Ghosh for 12 in the 16th over of the innings. Ghosh’s fellow opener Samrat Singh, however, struck four fours during his unbeaten 89-ball as he steered Tripura to 68 for 1 in Udiyan Bose’s (16*) company.

Birmingham silence Glamorgan's big hitters

A few weeks ago, Ed Pollock was such a peripheral part of Birmingham’s plans that the club’s director of sport, Ashley Giles, admits he hadnever seen him play. But, just six weeks after making his first team debut for the club, Pollock has booked Birmingham’s place in the final of the NatWestBlast with a rapid half-century that set the platform for an 11-run victory over Glamorgan.Pollock, a 22-year-old graduate of Durham MCCU and Shrewsbury School, scored every one of the first 39 balls of the Birmingham innings andwent on to register a 23-ball half century. It was his third half-century in eight T20 innings and provided further vindication of the decision to prefer Pollock and co. to players of international experience such as Ian Bell and William Porterfield. For this was a victory built largely on the boldness and athleticism of Birmingham’s young side. With six men in the side aged 24 or under,Birmingham defended their total with some outstanding fielding and some impressive pace bowling from Olly Stone, who exceeded 90 mph andhurried even Glamorgan’s most experienced batsmen.Four of Pollock’s first deliveries were struck for six with a slog-sweep for six off Colin Ingram followed by successive heaves backover Mike Hogan’s head and a flick over square-leg off Marchant de Lange. When de Lange pitched short, Pollock pulled with power and bythe time Birmingham brought up their 50, Dominic Sibley had provided just three of the runs. While Birmingham lost their way a little after Pollock’s departure – they lost three for 36 in the six overs after the powerplay – GrantElliott and Colin de Grandhomme ensured the early impetus was not lost with a stand of 46 for the fifth-wicket.Ed Pollock gave Birmingham a blistering start•Getty Images

Still, Glamorgan could feel well satisfied with their effort in the field. They clawed their way back into the game after Pollock’s earlyblast with Craig Meschede especially impressive in a four-over spell full of control and variation. Birmingham’s final total of 175 wasprobably no better than par on what appears to be an excellent surface for batsmen.Just as important as Pollock’s half-century was Birmingham’s catching at the start of the Glamorgan reply. Sam Hain clung on to anoutstanding catch – running round the mid-wicket boundary, he threw himself into a diving catch and, after seeing the ball bobble out ofhis grasp for a moment, somehow managed to cling on with his left hand – to account for Aneurin Donald, before Grant Elliott held on to anequally brilliant effort – running back from mid-on, he dived full-length and held on to the ball inches off the turf – to dismiss the dangerous Colin Ingram. It was a key moment. Of the 17 times Ingram has faced 20 balls or more in this competition over the last two years, Glamorgan have only lostthree times. With David Miller falling almost immediately, edging an attempted drive, Glamorgan were 39 for 3 with their most dangerousbatsmen gone. While Jacques Rudolph, who made an accomplished 65 in his last match before retirement, and Graham Wagg kept Glamorgan in the game, another outstanding piece of fielding byAaron Thomason ended their sixth-wicket stand of 50. Fielding a drive from Wagg off his own bowling, Thomason – a 20-year-old all-rounderwho has impressed with his composure as much as his all-round skills this season – had the presence of mind to flick the ball back towardsthe non-striker’s end where Rudolph was out of his ground. It all but ended Glamorgan’s realistic hopes of reaching the T20 domestic finalfor the first time. With Jeetan Patel typically frugal – his second over cost just one run – and Olly Stone offering notably sharp pace that consistentlyexceeded 90 mph, even Andrew Salter’s late assault (he took 14 off the first three balls of the final over bowled by Woakes before he wascaught on the long-on boundary as two fielders dangerously converged) was not enough.

Aston Villa Could Sign Grealish 2.0 In £50m "Handful"

Aston Villa aren’t giving up their pursuit of Nottingham Forest star Brennan Johnson, as Unai Emery bids to bolster his side ahead of the 2023/34 campaign.

Following his arrival in October, the Spaniard has transformed the outlook at Villa Park, taking the Midlands club to the next level alongside president of football operations, Monchi.

The former Sevilla business marvel could be on course to complete another coup in securing the signing of Johnson.

Who wants to buy Brennan Johnson?

The 22-year-old frontman has been rumoured to have been of interest to a number of Premier League clubs, with Villa and Brentford credited most recently, via the Daily Mail.

This week, an update from the Telegraph mentioned Forest’s ongoing battle regarding the Welshman’s future, who is ‘likely’ to be sold if a club can offer a fee in the region of £50m.

Whilst the Reds are reluctant to allow their star player to depart, the potential sale of the forward would relieve the financial pressures lingering over the City Ground at present.

How good is Brennan Johnson?

Following a season-long loan at Lincoln City in League One, the versatile forward has become at the forefront of everything threatening in the final third for Forest.

That year, the Nottingham-born gem scored 10 goals and registered 12 assists for the Imps, adding to his Football League tally the year after on his return to his birthplace.

During the 2021/22 Championship, the tenacious Wales international scored 16 goals along with nine assists to fire the Reds to promotion to the Premier League, where he has continued to rise in the top-flight.

Last season, the 22-year-old netted eight goals and provided three assists in his debut in the first division, attracting interest from elsewhere in the league this transfer window.

brennan-johnson-nottingham-forest-villa

For Villa, the youngster could provide Emery’s side with an updated version of a former hero in the Midlands, with the Forest man posing similarities to academy graduate Jack Grealish.

The treble-winner, like Johnson, is deployable across the front line behind the striker, with the versatility to play on the flank as well as in central attacking midfield.

Having once been lauded as a “real handful” by scout Antonio Mango, the Welshman could replicate the threat of the treble winner at Villa Park.

As per analyst VisualGame on Twitter, the 22-year-old gem ranked higher than the 27-year-old in terms of take-ons completed at the beginning of last season, showcasing the way that he could give the Midlands a refreshed aura of their former star.

Identifiable as two strong carriers of the ball, Grealish averaged 1.97 successful take-ons per 90 in the Premier League last season, with Johnson following behind with 1.01 successful take-ons per 90 at Forest, via FBref.

The City Ground sensation averaged a higher percentage of shots on target per 90 compared to the Englishman, averaging 46.2% shots on target to the former Villa man’s 36.6% per 90, highlighting the level of threat he could provide in the Midlands.

If equipped in a much stronger side, the Welsh sensation could elevate his game in a way similar to Grealish, given Villa’s rise up the table and change in direction with reference to the Reds pottering on the relegation line.

BCCI panel suggests court reconsider three Lodha recommendations

The BCCI has successfully narrowed down to three its list of Lodha Committee recommendations that it wants reviewed by the Supreme Court

The BCCI has successfully narrowed down the list of Lodha Committee recommendations that it wants reviewed by the Supreme Court to three. The points that the special panel which discussed the recommendations in Mumbai on Saturday wants the court to reconsider are: the three-year cooling off period for office bearers and members of the apex council, the one-state one-vote policy, and the demarcation in roles of office bearers and professionals. The seven-member panel was appointed by the BCCI on June 27 with a view to identify the “few critical points” in the implementation of the Supreme Court order. India’s finance minister Arun Jaitley, also a former vice-president of the BCCI, had met the panel earlier this week and asked them to narrow down the points of difficulties from seven to three or four, before presenting them to the Supreme Court. As a result, the new list did not feature an objection to the age cap of 70 years for office bearers, and the number of selectors being brought down from five to three.Given the panel has decided not to challenge the age cap of 70, it might seem that veteran officials such as N Srinivasan and Niranjan Shah – who himself, incidentally, was an “invitee” to the special panel – will be on their way out. However, the age-cap recommendation only extends to office bearers, and not nominees or invitees to any committee of the BCCI or state associations – like in the case of Shah in this panel – and that could be a loophole unless the Supreme Court specifically says otherwise.BCCI acting secretary Amitabh Choudhary, who convened the panel on Saturday, said these three points would now be sent to the board, which will hold a Special General Meeting (SGM) before the Supreme Court’s next hearing on July 14.The BCCI, according to Choudhary, wants the one-state one-vote policy to be reconsidered “with the view that the present members of the BCCI continue to remain members; at the same time, enroll new members, including those from the north-east, after following the due process”.For the cooling off period, Choudhary stated since a cap of nine years had been placed on the cumulative duration any office bearer held office for, the panel thought the cooling off period may be “put in abeyance”. He also said if the rule of cooling off period for office bearers could be done away with, it should apply to the membership of the apex council too. “All we are saying is, once you’ve placed a cap of nine years, this cooling off can be removed. And that should also apply to the apex council,” he said. The third point, which Choudhary did not elaborate on, deals with the demarcation of functions as set out between the elected office bearers, for example a secretary, and the professional appointees, like a board CEO. The Lodha Committee had suggested there be a segregation between the powers of the two, which the BCCI has objected to since its office bearers, such as the president and secretary, have wielded power historically and the appointment of a CEO is a more recent concept. When asked if the BCCI wanted this recommendation to be removed entirely, Choudhary only said, “it needs a review”.The panel to shortlist the recommendations for review comprised IPL chairman Rajiv Shukla, BCCI treasurer Anirudh Chaudhry, vice-president TC Mathew, Cricket Association of Bengal president Sourav Ganguly, Naba Bhattacharjee of the Meghalaya Cricket Association and Jay Shah, the joint-secretary of the Gujarat Cricket Association. The panel had been asked to submit a report with the list of difficulties by July 10. Ganguly and Mathews, though, did not attend the meeting on Saturday as they were traveling.

Daniel Farke Tipped To Do Key Thing As Leeds Manager

Incoming Leeds United manager Daniel Farke should look to bring his former players to the club this summer, according to ex-Whites goalkeeper Paul Robinson.

Is Farke heading to Leeds?

Leeds have been pushing hard to find their next boss before their 2023/24 Championship season gets underway, as they return to the second tier of English football for the first time since 2019/20.

Those high up at the club have been working hard on nailing the Whites' new manager, following the expected departure of Sam Allardyce, and numerous names have been thrown into the hat.

It now looks increasingly likely that former Norwich City manager Farke is set to be named Leeds boss, having been in charge of Bundesliga side Borussia Monchengladbach most recently.

A recent report has claimed that the German's arrival could be announced next week, ahead of what is a crucial summer, in terms of signing the right players and ensuring the Whites are back in the Premier League in no time.

Borussia Monchengladbach's former manager Daniel Farke.

Could Farke bring former players to Leeds?

Speaking to MOT Leeds News, Robinson, who contributes for Sky Sports, backed Farke to bring some of the past players he has managed to Leeds, due to already knowing them so well as footballers:

"Managers do that. A lot of managers go back to their old teams. They have players that they have worked with in the past that they know and trust and they like them in the dressing room.

"They know they will do a job for them regardless of who comes in, there’s potential for managers to do that and target players they’ve worked with in the past."

This would certainly be a shrewd approach from Farke if he was to go down that right, with the 46-year-old no doubt well aware of which players could be beneficial to Leeds moving forward.

In many ways, it could make life easier for him from the off at Elland Road, in terms of knowing he has some trusty lieutenants alongside him on the pitch, as he gets to know the Whites squad that he has inherited at the same time.

It is vital that Farke also looks elsewhere for new signings, however, with a number additions needed all over the pitch, especially if key figures move on. Should that happen, Farke needs to spend the money received wisely, ensuring Leeds begin next season as one of the front-runners for promotion.

Langeveldt wants more discipline from South Africa

Charl Langeveldt said South Africa’s bowlers have to be “box smart” and more disciplined than they were on the second day in Dunedin

Firdose Moonda in Dunedin09-Mar-2017Charl Langeveldt, South Africa’s bowling coach, has asked for more discipline from his attack, who he admitted will have to “box smart” on a tricky Dunedin pitch. Although Langeveldt believes New Zealand probably got the best of the surface on the first morning, when there was variable bounce, he believes South Africa could still tighten up and take control of the match.”If you’re going to have attacking fields, you are going to leak runs. In hindsight, we went for too many fours,” Langeveldt said. “Kane (Williamson) put us under pressure, especially against the spinner. He didn’t let the spinner settle down. Just blocking up one end would have been ideal. But Kane was on fire. Jeetan put us under pressure as well.”Not only did Williamson score freely off Keshav Maharaj, but he also took runs off Kagiso Rabada, who struggled with a slight stomach bug. Rabada’s illness was not serious enough to prevent him from taking the field, and Langeveldt is confident he will return with more venom on the third morning, but has invested most of his hopes in the team’s ability to strike early and find reverse-swing.”This is like a Port Elizabeth wicket. At the end there was a hint of reverse, so hopefully that will work in our favour,” Langeveldt said. “We have to box smart and try and contain Kane Williamson. He’s the key. I’m not sure whether Ross Taylor is going to come back but he’s a good batsman and they’ve got a few allrounders coming in. So we still have to bowl well to get them out. Tomorrow morning I feel we’ll have that opportunity, and then we need to box smart after that.”Taylor left the field with a calf injury and had scans at the university hospital. There is no definitive call on his availability for the rest of the match. Whether or not he returns, South Africa still have some big hitters and quick run-scorers to contend with, including Jimmy Neesham. Langeveldt would like to see his bowlers emulate New Zealand and squeeze a first-innings lead. “They bowled brilliantly and built pressure from both ends,” he said.Almost a third (32%) of the 122.4 overs New Zealand bowled were maidens, and they kept South Africa’s scoring rate to 2.51, as part of a plan to frustrate the opposition’s powerful line-up. “We were just looking to grip the ball and ask tough questions and not let them get too far ahead,” Trent Boult explained. “Everyone applied pressure in different stages, so it was easy for Kane to move between bowlers and not let that foot up. Stepping up maidens and dot balls was a big part of our plan, but there’s still a lot of work to be done.”By comparison, South Africa’s maidens efficiency was only 23%, and allowed New Zealand to score at 3.21. Still, Langeveldt believes the bowlers can make something happen, especially because Morne Morkel, who made a return after 14 months on the sidelines nursing a back injury, seems to be making a strong comeback. “His pace was up, he bowled a good amount of overs, he bowled really well and he got the ball in good areas. But the key thing was that Morne Morkel’s pace was up and he was bowling at 100%,” Langeveldt said.

Australia hit 241 at 7.53 in bid for sweep

Coverdale: Warner must feel in better space than a month ago

Rain cleared in Sydney for the second time in as many days to allow further progression of the SCG Test but Pakistan will require a world record cloudburst of strokes to prevent Australia advancing to a third victory from as many matches in the series on Saturday.A firecracker of an innings by David Warner and handsome hands from Steven Smith and Usman Khawaja helped the hosts set Pakistan a distant 465 to win after Younis Khan’s excellent rearguard dissuaded the hosts from enforcing the follow-on. The wicket of an aggressive Sharjeel Khan gave Smith an opening before the close. The entirety of the first session was lost for the second time in as many days, but Smith’s team made up for lost time by rattling off 241 in a mere 32 overs. Warner was certainly not in the mood to linger, hammering 55 from 27 balls to put Pakistan immediately on the back foot. He took particular toll on Yasir Shah, taking one over for 22.Smith and Khawaja followed up with plenty of telling blows of their own to stretch the lead, with the captain ultimately closing the innings with 16 overs left in the day and another 98 on day five. Sharjeel’s attacking instincts were given brief vent but his time in the middle on debut was ended when he flicked without due care and attention to Warner, lurking at midwicket.Earlier, Yasir had lasted more than an hour in the company of Younis to ensure Smith needed to call upon Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood more than he would have preferred if he were to send Pakistan back in. Hazlewood finished an exemplary display with four wickets, the last of which a sharp reverse swinger to bowl Imran Khan for a duck.Australia had one glimmer of hope to end Pakistan’s innings quickly when play got under way, as Starc coaxed an outside edge from Younis’ bat. However, Matthew Wade, back on the field having missed most of day three due to illness, was unable to hold onto the edge as he dived to his right.By the time Hazlewood found Yasir’s edge, 44 runs had been wiped off the deficit and Younis had gone well past 150. Australia will be without Matt Renshaw, ruled out of the match due to the symptoms of concussion after being struck twice in the helmet in the first three days.Khawaja duly walked out with Warner, and was in a great spot for a spectator as Australia’s vice-captain fired shots to all parts and briefly threatened the world record for fastest Test hundred as a follow-up to his century before lunch on day one of this match. In the end Warner got a fraction ahead of himself, bowled when aiming an ugly smear at Wahab Riaz, but he earned a second standing ovation of the Test and allowed Khawaja and Smith to carry on comfortably in his wake – the captain ended the session with a thumping six into the SCG Members. The runs continued to flow after tea, Smith moving along at a scarcely slower pace than Warner had set, and he was surprised to be given out when the third umpire Ian Gould detected the merest touch on the glove down the leg side when he tried to sweep Yasir. There was time for some flourish from Peter Handscomb before the declaration arrived, leaving Australia with plenty of time to chase a clean sweep of the series.
