Celebrations and uncharacteristic starts

Plays of the day from England’s thriller against West Indies in Chennai

Siddarth Ravindran at the Chidambaram Stadium17-Mar-2011The celebration – 1
England’s openers were getting into top gear, with Andrew Strauss launching the first six of the day in the ninth over. Andre Russell though provided more ammunition to those critical of the decision to open with Matt Prior, by dislodging him for 21 with a length ball that took the inside-edge and cannoned into middle stump. Russell sprinted in jubilation before leaping and clicking his heels, savouring the wicket which came immediately after a loose first over. The uncharacteristic start – Part 1
There have been plenty of questions about the pace of Jonathan Trott’s one-day batting, with not everyone convinced that a mid-50s average makes up for a mid-70s strike-rate. There could be no questions about the pace of his batting today, however, as he began with a flurry of effortless boundaries. Six of his first nine deliveries reached the ropes, not one of them muscled or hit in the air, as he sped to 26 off 9 – an unimpeachable strike-rate of 289.The uncharacteristic start – Part 2
Ravi Bopara is rarely more than a sixth-choice bowler. Kieron Pollard is one of the most brutal hitters in the world. Bring them face-to-face, that too in a Powerplay, and you’d expect the ball to be sailing into the crowd frequently. Instead, Pollard watchfully played out eight consecutive deliveries off the part-timer. A maiden to Pollard in the Powerplay? Put that down in your CV, Bopara. The drop
Perhaps in return for the respect shown by Pollard to his bowling, Bopara gave the batsman a reprieve in the 25th over. There had been more ups and downs than in a dirt-biking circuit, but the game remained even at that stage with Pollard threatening to be the difference. Two balls after a murderous hit over the official scorers’ box, Pollard miscued one towards point; Bopara sprinted from covers and positioned himself under the ball, with his back to the pitch, but couldn’t latch on, to the joy of Bangladesh fans everywhere. The where-does-one-bowl over
Chris Tremlett was one of three England players making their World Cup debut, and his first over couldn’t have been worse. The two deliveries that weren’t scored off were a leg-stump ball that Chris Gayle couldn’t get past short fine leg and a full toss that wasn’t swatted away. In between, Gayle hammered four balls that were short of length for 4, 6, 4 and 4.The pose
Russell had enjoyed himself in the morning with four wickets – three of which send stumps cartwheeling – and he continued to have fun with the bat. He announced his batting skills with a baseballer’s blast over long-on which made the crowd sit up, but the shot he enjoyed the most was a lofted drive in the next over which flew wide of mid-off and went for four – he admired the stroke and held the follow-through for ages to make sure the cameras got a good shot. The catch?
Russell and Ramnaresh Sarwan were wrenching the game West Indies’ way with a big stand, when Russell swiped a delivery from Swann towards long-on in the 38th over. Trott back-pedalled towards the rope, and took a catch tumbling backwards, seemingly inches within the rope. He signalled that he hadn’t touched the boundary, but the TV umpire was called for. An agonising number of replays couldn’t determine whether his floppy hat had brushed the rope, and Russell survived. And to make it worse for England, West Indies got six vital runs as well. The celebration – 2
Trott had a fielding moment to remember soon after though, when Sulieman Benn got the ball towards him at fine leg. He collected and fired in the throw to the keeper, who took off the bails before Benn could make it back for an ill-advised second run. The last wicket was gone, and an ecstatic England team converged towards him to form a delirious huddle. England’s thrill-ride in the World Cup continues.

The Dentist from Nevis

Maynard typified an era when a tour of the West Indies was the ultimate
examination of body and soul

Andrew Miller25-Mar-2007To an English cricket fan of the early 1990s, John “The Dentist”
Maynard was one of the most evocative characters imaginable. One might
even go so far as to suggest he is the most famous West Indian fast
bowler never to have played a Test. Those who were not hooked on the
coverage of England’s tour of the Caribbean in 1993-94 will probably
have no idea who he is. Others, like myself, could give chapter and
verse on his marmalisation of England’s middle-order during their
build-up to that winter’s Test series.Maynard, to this distant long-wave listener of Test Match Special,
typified an era when a tour of the West Indies was the ultimate
examination of body and soul. The arrival of a Test team in the
Caribbean, particularly if it had come from England, was a call to
arms for every aspiring cricketer in the region. Long before Duncan
Fletcher turned tour games into a 12-man-a-side glorified net session,
Maynard and his cronies were cranking up the pace and injecting the
venom, eager to advance their claims to Test selection, but equally
determined to crush the tourists’ morale before they embarked on the
main event. The Dentist’s first-class career was brief. He played 13 times for the
Leeward Islands between 1991-92 and 1998-99, taking 35 wickets with a
best of 5 for 24. But in that time he was undoubtedly explosive. “In
the early 1990s, people were ranking my pace with Bish [Ian Bishop],”
he told Cricinfo at Warner Park, where – as a proud Nevisian – he was
dividing between net-bowling duties for the visiting World Cup teams,
and a stint as a guest summariser on none other than TMS. “I think
even now, at the age of 37, I’m in the mid-eighties.””I was always pretty close,” he says of his lack of Test recognition.
“I used to be quite pacy, and I was touted to be the one who’d slip in
maybe when the Bishop era finished. But then they were forever
changing – Ottis Gibson, Vasbert Drakes, Nixon McLean. Sometimes the
luck of the draw doesn’t fall on your side. But I was always close
enough to the pot for them to be having a look.”Maynard was never closer than in the spring of 1994, when England came
to visit. He played in only two of the tour matches, and one of those
– for St Kitts and Nevis on the pre-development Basseterre ground –
wasn’t deemed to be first-class. Nevertheless, in the space of 52
hounding overs, he picked off England’s finest for fun. The scores of
his victims were: Atherton 6, Maynard 2, Hussain 0, Stewart 21, Thorpe
11, Hick 0, Ramprakash 4. Seven England top-order batsmen, blasted
away for a sum total of 44 runs. Job done. Over to you Curtly.Like any self-respecting West Indian fast bowler, there’s one name in
that list of victims that stands out from the rest. “Graeme Hick, he’s
always been one of my favourites, funnily enough,” glints the Dentist,
recalling how, having undermined Hick’s Test preparations with a duck,
he stalked the poor man all the way back to the county scene the
following summer, dismissing him third ball for 6 in a one-off Benson &Hedges Cup
appearance for Norfolk against Worcestershire.

“I was by far and away the most destructive quick bowler in the

“I think at that time Hick was established as a first-class cricketer,
but as a Test cricketer he never really got a chance to settle down as
he might have liked. He lacked a bit of confidence, and maybe that’s
because he wasn’t from England. Maybe he thought he was supposed to do
a little more than he’s supposed to. Maybe that stalled his career.”Surprising as it may seem, Maynard would sympathise if that was the
case. As an inhabitant of Nevis, an island of just 11,000 people,
recognition has always seemed harder to come by than it might have
been had he hailed from Barbados, Jamaica or Trinidad. “It’s always
been a problem with the island politics,” he says. “Take Stuart
Williams [a fellow Nevisian who played 31 Tests between 1994 and
2002], his name was always about for getting dropped, even though the
guys competing with him didn’t get the same runs. Smaller islands tend
to get the hard knocks sometimes.”But they also have, just once in a while, the opportunity to punch
above their weight in spectacular fashion. Only last year, Maynard and
Williams joined forces in what he now describes as his favourite form
of the game – Twenty20 cricket – to help propel little Nevis all the
way to the semi-finals of a tournament that featured teams from 19
different islands. Along the way, they inflicted massively satisfying
defeats on their nearest neighbours and bitterest rivals, St Kitts in
the first round and Antigua in the quarter-finals.”I was by far and away the most destructive quick bowler in the
competition,” says the Dentist, “even at the age of 37. I took the
most wickets as a quick and consistently generated the most pace.” His
finest hour was a haul of 4 for 9 against St Kitts that earned him a
Man of the Match cheque for $25,000, and inter-island bragging rights
for evermore. “We’re the smaller population in Nevis, but we focus a
lot more on cricket, In St Kitts they are all focussed on football.”That’s because Nevis has a cricket heritage that St Kitts, its swanky
new stadium notwithstanding, would die for. The Nevisian, Elquemedo
Willett, who played five Tests as a left-arm spinner between 1973 and
1975, was the first cricketer from any of the smaller islands to play
for West Indies. Six have since followed his example: Derek Parry,
Keith Arthurton, Stuart Williams, Runako Morton and Carl Tuckett. St
Kitts, by contrast, has yet to get off the mark. “The majority of our
young guys try to emulate Willett,” adds Maynard. “He was the stepping
stone.”Nevis is way ahead of Kitts when it comes to producing international cricketers – Elquemedo Willet, Runako Morton(above), Keith Arthurton, Stuart Williams, Carl Tuckett and Derek Parry. Kitts is yet to produce one•Getty ImagesMaynard still has the look and build of a genuine fast bowler, and the
self-belief to match. “About three years ago, I was playing locally
for the islands competition, and I might have got a chance [for the
Test side] then. Everything seemed to be right, I was feeling so good
with my game, my fitness, everything. And I was getting wickets. But
that’s the time that [Ian] Bradshaw got into the team. If I’d got a
look in with the Leewards then, who knows, maybe I would have been in
Jamaica by now.”Why though, is he known as the Dentist? “It’s a funny old story,” he
grins. “I was playing for Nevis against Antigua many years ago, and
there was this bloke playing for Antigua called Zorah Barthley, who
was the West Indies youth team captain. Nevis had never beaten Antigua
outright in Antigua, but that afternoon, we took the new ball and he
was playing really late. And I thought to myself, if he’s playing late
now I’ve got to rough him up early in the morning.”First thing in the morning he nicks one but the umps didn’t send him
on his way, and that wound me up a bit. And so the next ball was four
yards quicker than anything I’ve ever bowled. He shaped to hook, and
his teeth went flying all over the place, and it was a funny old
sight. But he was the man who made the Dentist really. I couldn’t have
done it without him.”I never worry about hurting them at the time,” he adds. “Maybe I’ll
think about it later at night, but in the heat of the moment, as a
bowler if you can’t get them out, you’ve gotta hurt them ’til they get
out. I think I’ve broken pretty much every part of the body so far,
from the teeth to the jaw to the nose to the ribs to the arms and to
the toes.” No wonder his legend precedes him.

Coach Heinrich Malan won't change Ireland's attacking methods despite Sylhet thumping

“He has put his name up in lights” – Malan also lauds seamer Graham Hume, who grabbed four wickets in the first ODI

Ireland coach Heinrich Malan wants his side to continue playing with the aggressive mentality that they have shown over the past few months. This, despite their 183-run loss against Bangladesh in the first ODI in Sylhet, where they slipped to 76 for 5 – and eventually 155 all out – despite being 60 without loss in the 12th over in pursuit of 339.”The captain said that we are focusing on the way we play,” Malan said. “Of course, it is about results. We understand international cricket is about winning and losing, but it is the way we go about our business. I think if you look at the last 12 months, the way we have tried to play has got us into opportunities to beat some of the bigger sides. We beat England in the [T20] World Cup.”We look at this series as one of those opportunities as well: to come here in different conditions against a team that just beat the world champions, and show what we [have] got in the bank.”Ireland have achieved mixed results across both limited-overs formats since 2022, having won an away ODI series against West Indies and a home T20I series against Afghanistan, and drawn an ODI series in Zimbabwe and T20I series against South Africa in England along the way. They also came close to beating New Zealand and India several times during their home season last year – margins of defeat included four runs, one wicket, three wickets and one run.Malan said Ireland will still keep fighting their own way, even with Bangladesh having been quite dominant at home since 2015. He even found the funny side of how the Sylhet weather became slightly Irish overnight; there has been non-stop rain in the region, with the temperature also falling. But Malan also acknowledged that this would work to the Bangladesh pace attack’s advantage.”It is a lot more our sort of conditions, isn’t it? Hopefully, it keeps raining and hopefully it [the ball] keeps moving around,” he said. “Look, let’s not look beyond the fact that Bangladesh has three quality seamers too. They highlighted last night that they have become a very good all-round side.Graham Hume took a career-best 4 for 60, including the wickets of Shakib Al Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim•AFP/Getty Images

“It is not just about playing spin anymore. They have an accomplished seam attack. If it is a little overcast and rainy, it will be a little more comfortable for us. We have to play on what’s in front of you; we are looking forward to the challenge in Bangladesh.”Malan said his team was working on identifying areas they did well in in the first ODI and rectifying areas they didn’t.”It is not the result that we are obviously after. I think it was a nice little opportunity for us to get a feel for the conditions,” he said. “They were better than what we anticipated. It was a nice surface. It wasn’t as effected as we thought it would be. It is something that we identified and something we will rectify tomorrow.”We are trying to find ways to get wickets in the middle overs of white-ball matches. We picked up some wickets in the powerplay, [but] they built a nice partnership through the middle and allowed them to get a foundation to have a successful death period. We are taking that into account. Looking at tomorrow, we have to come up with one or two creative ways to get some quality players in the opposition under pressure.”Malan praised how right-arm seamer Graham Hume bowled, taking a career-best 4 for 60 in what was only his fifth ODI. Although slightly expensive, Hume dismissed the dangerous-looking Shakib Al Hasan and Towhid Hridoy, as well as Mushfiqur Rahim.”We know what we will get from Hume. He is a very consistent performer,” Malan said. “He has been around for a long time. It has been a great addition to our bowling stocks. He has got a lot of opportunities over the last year with a few injuries. It is exciting that we are building a pace-bowling stock. He has put his name up in lights now through his performance. Hopefully he can keep doing that for us.”Malan also said that they could use the left-arm spin of George Dockrell, who although he didn’t bowl a single over in the first game, is someone who keeps working on his bowling despite changing track as an international cricketer.”Over the last couple of years, he [has] transformed himself into a quality batter after coming into the side as a bowler,” Malan said. “He is always an option as a bowler. He trains diligently and does everything in the nets. I guess it comes down to the match-ups. We were trying to create some match-ups with the lefties yesterday, hence you saw couple of overs from [Harry] Tector as well.”

'Very arrogant guy' – Ex-La Liga striker slams Cristiano Ronaldo's toxic attitude during Real Madrid tenure & claims it was always 'unpleasant' coming up against Portuguese icon

Former Osasuna striker Walter Pandiani opened up about Cristiano Ronaldo's toxic attitude during his stint with Real Madrid as he labelled the Portugal icon as "arrogant". Pandiani recalled an incident during a La Liga clash between Osasuna and Los Blancos, where he had an altercation with the Al-Nassr star, who behaved rudely with him.

Pandiani, who played for several clubs across Spain and England, including Birmingham City, Espanyol and Osasuna, called Ronaldo arrogant and rude while narrating an incident involving the 40-year-old during a La Liga clash.

Speaking to , the 49-year-old said: "The Osasuna players are very passionate, they would whistle and insult him as soon as he came out to warm up. That made him angry and, while he was practising free kicks, he would shoot at people. Because of that, the match started in a tense atmosphere. During a foul in Madrid's favour, Cristiano pushed my teammate Javier Camunas and I went to defend him. I pushed Cristiano, he asked me who I was and how much I earned."

Pandiani added: "The argument continued in the locker room tunnel with him and Sergio Ramos. I was very angry and so were they. I didn't like his attitude at all. He was an arrogant guy. As a goalscorer, he was great, but his behaviour left a lot to be desired. Afterwards, José Mourinho (then Real Madrid manager, editor's note) said I was looking for free publicity even though I had been playing in the first division for eleven years. It was very unpleasant."

Serie A players' salaries to be automatically reduced by 25% after relegation under new role approved by Italian FA

Serie A will introduce an automatic 25 per cent salary cut for players relegated to Serie B, under a new agreement starting this year.

New rule slashes wages by 25 per cent after relegationReduction reversed upon promotion back to Serie AMeasure aims to ease financial strain after dropFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

According to , the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) has approved a new rule under which Serie A players’ salaries will automatically be reduced by 25% if their club is relegated to Serie B. This change forms part of a new five-year collective bargaining agreement signed between Lega Serie A and the Italian Players' Association (AIC). The rule will apply to all contracts signed after September 2, 2025.

AdvertisementTHE BIGGER PICTURE

For years, Serie A clubs have pushed for contractual flexibility to manage financial losses following relegation, especially due to reduced TV revenue. Until now, teams relied on selling players or terminating contracts to cut costs. This structural change provides an automatic mechanism for wage adjustment while allowing exceptions if clubs and players negotiate alternative terms. The rule is designed to make the system more sustainable and fair for both parties.

TELL ME MORE…

The new rule, Article 5.2, paragraph 7 of the Serie A players' collective bargaining agreement, says: "In the event of a team's relegation to Serie B, the fixed salary is automatically reduced by 25%, without, however, the recalculated salary being allowed to fall below the minimum limit set, depending on the player's age group, by the Serie A players' collective bargaining agreement. The reduction referred to in this paragraph takes effect from the season immediately following the one in which the relegation occurs and remains in effect for any subsequent seasons, except in the case of a new promotion to Serie A, which will result in the original salary level being restored, any agreements to the contrary in individual contracts are in any case reserved." This means clubs and players can negotiate a salary based on the competition the club is or will be involved in. "That varies depending on the championship and/or international competition in which the club participates or will participate."

WHAT SERIE A SAID

“This agreement represents a significant step forward for our football system,” said Lega Serie A President Ezio Simonelli. "It is a historic agreement, both for its content and the method used to reach it: a process of constructive dialogue, developed over time with a spirit of responsibility and a shared vision. This result confirms how institutional dialogue and collaboration between Lega and AIC are essential tools for addressing the challenges of modern football with balance and foresight."

He added: "Our goal, as Lega Serie A, is to contribute to an increasingly solid, fair, and sustainable system, in which the needs of clubs and players can be reconciled in the shared interest of protecting and growing the sport."

AIC President Umberto Calcagno shared a similar view, stating: "The new agreement is the result of constructive dialogue between the parties, with a view to safeguarding the interests of the entire system."

Stephen Eskinazi 94* in vain as Sussex keep Middlesex winless

Shadab Khan provides impetus with bat before Tymal Mills closes out last-over victory

ECB Reporters Network08-Jun-2023

Sussex 181 for 8 (Shadab 59, Hollman 2-30) beat Middlesex 177 for 5 (Eskinazi 94*, McAndrew 2-34) by four runsStephen Eskinazi’s 94 proved in vain as Middlesex went down by four runs to Sussex at Lord’s to set an unwanted record of eight successive defeats.Seaxes skipper Eskinazi batted throughout the chase for 182 but needing to hit the last ball from Tymal Mills for six he swung and missed, leaving Sussex the victors. It means 12 successive defeats in T20 for the men of Lord’s.Sussex, for whom this was just the second win of the campaign, owed much to Pakistan international Shadab Khan’s 59 from 30 balls, during which he shared a fourth-wicket stand of 91 with veteran skipper Ravi Bopara, a record for the southcoast outfit against Middlesex in the Vitality Blast. Luke Hollman and Ryan Higgins were the pick of the home attack with two wickets apiece.Middlesex initially held sway in the powerplay, removing Michael Burgess and Tom Alsop cheaply. The former’s scratchy effort ended when he nicked Josh de Caires to Jack Davies and there was a second catch for the wicketkeeper when Alsop attempted to ramp Martin Andersson.Tom Clark twice swung Andersson over the ropes but should have been caught attempting the hat-trick only for Higgins to drop a dolly at midwicket. And the opener was given another life when he charged Hollman only for Davies to miss the stumping.Higgins atoned in part for the drop when he bowled Clark soon afterwards, but wicket-taking balls had been wasted and that proved costly when Shadab and Bopara went on the offensive. Shadab was especially belligerent with two glorious straight hits among his five sixes as he sped to 50 in 24 balls, with his skipper, as he has done so often at Lord’s, Bopara proving an excellent foil.Shadab eventually slashed Higgins to Andersson on the point fence to spark a mini collapse which also witnessed the end of Bopara, but James Coles employed the long handle to good effect as the visitors posted an imposing score. The hosts made another poor start when Joe Cracknell lobbed Fynn Hudson-Prentice’s first ball to mid-on’s hands, but three successive fours from Eskinazi in Henry Crocombe’s first over gave them some impetus. Eye in, Eskinazi flat-batted Mills over point for six as 60 came from the powerplay.Eskinazi raced to 50 in 31 balls with a six and five fours and Pieter Malan caught the mood, pulling Mills into the Tavern Stand hospitality boxes. Bopara, in a typically frugal spell, ended a stand of 85 when he bowled Malan for 36, but 79 were needed from the final 48 balls.Max Holden was reprieved on 4 when dropped at cover only to hole out at midwicket off Nathan McAndrew with 43 needed but successive fours from new man Jack Davies kept the hosts in the hunt. Two more fours from the wicketkeeper’s flashing blade off the expensive Mills left 21 needed from the final two overs and when Eskinazi lapped McAndrew that elusive win looked in sight.Davies though departed to a brilliant catch by Clark on the mid-off fence and 12 off the last over proved too many.

Same agent as Trafford: Newcastle now battling to sign "phenomenal" striker

As rumours continue to come thick and fast regarding Alexander Isak’s potential suitors, Newcastle United have reportedly joined the race to sign a 10-goal Premier League star.

Newcastle set sights on possible Isak replacements

The interest in Isak should come as no surprise. The Swede has been among the Premier League’s best forwards once again this season, scoring 22 goals in all competitions. But whilst his form hasn’t slowed down, Newcastle have.

The Magpies have so far been unable to match their Champions League ambitions and are set to miss out for a second consecutive season as things stand, doing them no favours in pursuit of keeping hold of their star man.

It is at least a potential exit that PIF seem to be preparing for, however, amid recent links to the likes of Hugo Ekitike, who could finally complete a move to St James’ Park following the Magpies’ long-standing interest.

If it’s not to be the Eintracht Frankfurt forward, meanwhile, then it may well be a candidate slightly closer to home that replaces Isak. According to The Boot Room, Newcastle are now plotting a summer move to sign Liam Delap from Ipswich Town following the forward’s excellent debut campaign for The Tractor Boys.

What should instantly make negotiations easier is the fact that Delap is under the same agency as James Trafford, who has reportedly already agreed personal terms with Newcastle ahead of a potential summer switch.

Having already successfully negotiated one deal between them, Newcastle and Trafford’s representatives could be set for further talks regarding another client in the form of Delap. The 22-year-old is certainly one to watch, especially if Newcastle are forced to find a replacement for Isak this summer.

"Phenomenal" Delap is a rising star

Joining a growing list of former Manchester City academy stars to find success elsewhere, Delap looks destined to make his way back to the top of English football, which could yet feature a move to St James’ Park this summer. Even as Ipswich have struggled, he has been at the centre of praise from the likes of football talent scout Jacek Kulig, who dubbed him “phenomenal”.

With 10 goals to his name in the Premier League this season, Delap looks unlikely to let Ipswich drop down to the Championship without putting up a fight. The forward has certainly done his job and now has 10 games left to drag The Tractor Boys to safety against the odds.

Meanwhile, as relegation looms for Kieran McKenna’s side, Newcastle are seemingly among those waiting to pounce and ensure that Delap maintains his own place in England’s top flight.
