Worth far more than Doak: Liverpool have hit gold on "special" academy gem

Liverpool are an efficient club. Some would say circumspect, but FSG operate within their parameters and know that their formula perpetuates success.

It can be frustrating, at times, but you need only look back at the Premier League’s winding road over the past decade to note the fragilities and dysfunctions of some of Anfield’s biggest rivals, and how Jurgen Klopp’s side have been perched in the ascendency for the lion’s share of this time-frame.

Arne Slot was met with a lack of first-team investment after taking on the impossible task of succeeding his larger-than-life predecessor, but Liverpool are flying at the top of the Premier League and in confident positions in the Champions League and Carabao Cup too.

Whatever FSG are doing, it’s working. And this is why Liverpool’s willingness to let Ben Doak leave – for the right price – isn’t a disaster, but a calculated decision.

Why Liverpool may sell Doak

As per The Times’ Paul Joyce, Liverpool have rejected bids from Ipswich Town and Crystal Palace for Doak this month, worth £16m and £15m respectively.

Liverpool would welcome their talented winger back to the club at the end of the season but the fact that they have responded to bids with their £30m valuation makes a convincing comment on their selling stance.

For £30m, Liverpool would hit the jackpot and then some, for he has only played half a term of Championship football, and talented he may be, the Scotland international is not so unexpendable that any tentative raised hands are shot down instantly.

Ben Doak in action for Middlesbrough

This is conjecture, but it’s curious that Liverpool should be open to cashing in given that Mohamed Salah is out of contract at the end of the season and Federico Chiesa has also been linked with a move away. Might this portend Salah’s renewal?

In any case, it’s a shining endorsement of Liverpool’s academy scene. Doak might be the cream of the current Kirkby crop after signing from Celtic several years ago, but some existing homegrown stars are actually worth more than him.

Of course, Trent Alexander-Arnold is the cream of the crop, but Curtis Jones is also flying after years of on-off flashes of prominence in the first team.

Jones' Liverpool career

Jones made his senior debut back in 2019 as a 17-year-old, though it was a year later that he decried his quality across Merseyside, scoring a sumptuous curling strike as Liverpool beat Everton in the FA Cup.

Said to have “all the attributes of a top player” by former captain Jordan Henderson, the 23-year-old is now proving that support with his dynamic performances, capable across a range of midfield roles.

He’s also been praised for his “truly special” quality on the ball by one analyst, and will be delighted to note that consistency has entered his game this season, on course for his best individual campaign yet in the English top flight.

He’s flying this term, backing his potency up with a 95% pass completion rate in the Premier League, also averaging 1.3 tackles per game and winning 53% of his duels, as per Sofascore.

The sky’s the limit, with Jones proving that he can play a fundamental part in Liverpool’s future under Slot. Doak is the talk of the academy at the moment and touted for big things, but Jones has always slipped under the radar somewhat – now, he’s shining, with a market value that reflects his gains.

Why Slot has hit gold with Jones

Jones’ improvements over the past couple of years do provide food for thought: Doak is already performing at a high level and has not even bid farewell to his teenage years.

Ben Doak for Liverpool.

But Jones’ good fortunes have been a product of hard work and tenacity, overcoming obstacles to play a key part in Slot’s system this year.

Pundit Micah Richards praised the Liverpool star’s “extraordinary” England debut in November after he earned the call-up due to his presence in Slot’s team. Jones has featured 22 times this season, scoring five goals, adding three assists and starting nine times in the Premier League.

His intelligence off the ball is astounding, shifting through the lines to latch onto Trent’s exquisite postage, Salah’s sublime through ball, underlines his happy marriage in this newlook Liverpool team, for Slot is a pedant in the best sense of the word, driven toward fine-tuning tactical wiring to ensure that Liverpool stay ahead of the curve.

As per FBref, he ranks among the top 1% of Premier League central midfielders this season for pass completion, the top 2% for passes attempted, the top 11% for progressive passes and the top 14% for tackles per 90, perfectly illustrating his passing prowess and the security that he provides.

Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones celebrates

It’s no surprise that Jones’ market value has risen exponentially over the past few years, with Transfermarkt recording his market value to sit at £37m. Only in March 2023, Jones’s reported price tag totalled £14m.

Doak might be worth £30m, but he’s not yet eclipsed Jones, and if Liverpool were to cash in on the latter this year, you can be sure that Richard Hughes would balk at that £37m, demand much more.

Liverpool star Curtis Jones celebrates

Jones has so much scope for growth and has actually proven under Slot’s wing this season that he can adopt clinical patterns and weave them into the fabric of his mechanics.

Liverpool’s Dutch coach has inherited a brilliant team. Though fans generally wouldn’t put Jones in the top bracket, he’s proving that Alexander-Arnold doesn’t stand alone as Anfield’s academy superstar, with his best days still, perhaps, to come.

Imagine him & Caicedo: Chelsea plotting move for "monster" £70m star

Since Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital bought Chelsea, they have spent an eye-watering amount of money, investing in every area of the pitch, as well as stocking up some of the best young talents in the world.

One area Chelsea have heavily invested in since the arrival of their new owners, is central midfield, signing Moises Caicedo, Enzo Fernández, Roméo Lavia, Andrey Santos, Lesley Ugochukwu, Carney Chukwuemeka, Cesare Casadei and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall.

And it is their most expensive of the lot that has impressed the most, with Caicedo going from strength to strength and showing his true quality in all phases of the game.

Moises Caicedo's importance

Since joining the club, Caicedo has made 62 appearances, scoring two goals and providing six assists, whilst playing across 5,067 minutes.

The 23-year-old has won the most tackles and interceptions combined in the Premier League this season, hoovering up balls in the middle of the park, winning his duels and keeping things ticking for the Blues.

Enzo Maresca has even stated the importance of Caicedo to his side, calling him “fantastic” since become manager. We have also begun to see slightly more from Caicedo in the playmaking department, spraying passes from deep, and chipping in with some assists this season already.

That attacking nature could be further unleashed as the defensive line behind him improves, giving him slightly more freedom to express himself, and Chelsea may well look to improve that in the near future.

Chelsea looking at Premier League defender

According to reports from talkSPORT, Chelsea are considering a move for Crystal Palace defender, Marc Guehi. The 24-year-old would reportedly cost in the region of £70m, as Newcastle refused to pay that fee for him in the summer transfer window.

Guehi came through the Chelsea academy, making 102 appearances for the U18, U19 and U21 sides, scoring nine goals and providing seven assists. But it was on loan with Swansea in the 2020/21 season that Guehi truly established himself, making 45 appearances and, contributing to 18 clean sheets.

Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi.

It was his time at Swansea that saw him labelled as a “giant” by scout Jacek Kulig, despite being just 5 foot 11, which is small for a defender.

But his presence on the pitch, ability to read the game at such a young age, and make timely challenges in defence, made him a target for clubs to swipe away from Chelsea, and it was Palace who secured him for a fee of around £20m.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Fast-forward to now, Guehi often captains the Eagles. The England international has made 126 appearances for Palace now, scoring seven goals and providing two assists, establishing himself as one of the league’s top defenders. He has also been a “monster” for England in the eyes of Palace reporter Bobbi Manzi on the way to earning 22 caps for his country.

A pairing of Guehi and Levi Colwill would provide Chelsea with an excellent base of progressive passing, both players having the ability to play disguised passes between the lines, an important factor of Maresca’s system at Chelsea, and a big reason the latter has thrived this campaign thus far.

Despite being a smaller central defender, Guehi also wins 2.75 aerial duels, a metric that Chelsea haven’t dominated in recent years, and adding some extra aerial ability would go a long way to improving the squad at both ends of the pitch.

Not only would it solidify Maresca’s backline but it would go a long way to helping the midfielders, like Caicedo, gain some extra security when progressing play.

Chelsea want to sign £115m star who could make Palmer even more unplayable

Chelsea could sign an “unbelievable” striker to make Palmer even more unplayable

He’s got Henry vibes: Arsenal planning £100m + bid to sign amazing star

After a disappointing month that almost entirely dismantled their Premier League title charge, Arsenal look back to their best.

The North Londoners blew Nottingham Forest away at home before blitzing Sporting CP and West Ham United away to reignite their campaign and give their fans reason to hope.

However, with Liverpool now firmly in the driving seat, Mikel Arteta and Co must also think ahead to ensure they don’t encounter similar attacking issues that plagued them prior to the international break next season.

Fortunately, that seems to be happening, as recent reports have linked the club with a forward who’s been compared to Thierry Henry and someone who’d help Bukayo Saka reach yet another level.

Arsenal transfer news

According to a recent report from Spain, Arsenal are still incredibly interested in Newcastle United’s star striker, Alexander Isak.

In fact, the Gunners are so desperate to bring him to the Emirates next year that the report claims they are prepared to make a club-record offer of €135m to make it happen, which converts to about £112m, or £7m more than they paid for Declan Rice last summer.

It would be a monumental sum of money to spend on a single player, but given his sensational ability, it could be worth it in the long run.

Moreover, the 25-year-old has been compared to the legendary Henry in the past and would surely form an incredible partnership with Saka.

Isak's comparisons to Henry and potential partnership with Saka

So, before looking at how he could help Saka reach another level, let’s examine this comparison with arguably Arsenal’s greatest player of all time, Henry.

In this instance, the comparison was made in April 2023 by sports presenter Daniel Hussey, who described the Swede as possessing “Henry vibes” following his mercurial assist for Jacob Murphy against Everton, and when you see it, it’s hard to disagree.

The former Real Sociedad ace races down the left-hand side of the pitch before dancing into the penalty area, beating four defenders and delicately dinking the ball into an almost empty net for his teammate to poke home.

It’s this ability to utterly humiliate defenders, particularly off the left, that makes so many fans and pundits make the comparison between the two players, especially as, like the Frenchman, the Toon star is more than capable of starting on the wing as well as down the middle.

However, beyond the positional similarities and the way in which the 25-year-old so often curls the ball into the back of the net like the former invincible, his attacking output is why so many clubs are after him and why he’d be a dream partner for the Gunners’ number seven.

For example, since joining the Magpies, the Solna-born monster has scored 40 goals and provided seven assists in 80 appearances, which equates to a goal involvement on average every 1.70 games.

Moreover, the “world-class” poacher, as dubbed by Eddie Howe, was utterly sensational last season, scoring 25 goals and providing two assists in 40 appearances, which is an even more impressive average of a goal involvement every 1.48 games.

In comparison, the North Londoners’ new starting striker, Kai Havertz, has scored 23 goals and provided eight assists in 70 appearances for the team, which equates to a goal involvement every 2.25 games.

So, if Saka has been able to rack up an outrageously impressive tally of seven goals and 11 assists in 18 appearances this season, just think how much more effective he’d be alongside the Magpies ace.

Ultimately, Arsenal are already an incredibly dangerous team in attack, but were they to add Isak to the mix in 2025, then they would reach another level entirely and there is no knowing how many goal involvements Saka would be able to amass alongside him.

Chelsea are now ready to sell £80k-p/w ace just months after his arrival

Chelsea are flying high in the Premier League, and they could continue to be ruthless in the transfer window as another star is reportedly up for sale ahead midway through the campaign.

Chelsea working with two squads

One of the key themes of Enzo Maresca’s early Chelsea reign has been his quick and brutal dissection of the Chelsea squad into essentially two separate XIs, one for the Premier League and one for other competitions. This was made clear early on, when Cole Palmer and Wesley Fofana were among those left out of the UEFA Conference League squad for the group stages, and has continued in the early part of the campaign.

The likes of Marc Guiu, Christopher Nkunku, Enzo Fernández and João Félix are all firm starters for the Conference League ties, which has seen Chelsea win all four games including an 8-0 thrashing of FC Noah in their most recent outing.

However, Guiu has made just one Premier League appearance and has not even been in the Matchday squad since September, while Nkunku has just one start to his name and is largely used as a substitute, coming on for the final two minutes of his side’s 1-1 draw with Arsenal in their most recent outing.

Tyrique George

Though it is unquestionably proving successful at present, it is still to be seen how Maresca may deal with the latter stages of the competitions, when he may wish to revert to a full strength side in the hunt for silverware, and should they qualify for the Champions League next season, the same formula is unlikely to work on Europe’s biggest stage.

It is also seemingly leading to unrest among some of the “B” team, and now one could be set to exit in January.

Midfielder could leave in January

Now, a report from Spain has claimed that midfielder Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall could be set to leave the club in January, after only arriving in west London in the summer.

The former Leicester City man followed Maresca to Stamford Bridge, but has played just 43 minutes in the Premier League to date and has only been in one match-day squad in the last six games, underlying his status at the club.

It is a massive drop from being a key player for the Foxes, with Ademola Lookman singing his praises when the pair played together in 2022: “Dewsbury-Hall is an amazing player. His energy, his tenacity is what we need and he’s very valuable to the squad.”

Maresca was keen to praise him after a strong performance against Gent in Europe too, explaining: “I completely understand how difficult it is for Kiernan at this moment. I know when you are the main player and then move to a big club it’s not easy because you’re not the main player, and you’re on the bench or not in the squad.

“Sometimes you struggle a bit at the beginning, but he has to understand the reason he is here is because we want him, so I was very happy for him. The celebration was because I know he needed that.”

He is still under contract until 2029, having penned a five year deal worth £80k per week mere months ago, but already the club are believed to be considering “loaning or even selling him”.

They have reportedly slapped a £30m price tag on his head, and Aston Villa lead the interest in his services, though Unai Emery’s side are only willing to offer a loan deal with an option to buy which would total a sum just short of £20m. Though likely to be an insufficient sum to tempt the Blues into cashing in, the lack of minutes afforded to Dewsbury-Hall is surely a cause for concern.

Aston Villa eyeing transfer move for £50m gem who wants to work with Emery

Aston Villa are interested in signing a “fantastic” Spanish midfielder who knows manager Unai Emery very well, according to a new report. It has been another impressive start to a campaign for the Villans, as they have taken 18 points from a possible 27 in the league and sit top of the Champions League table after winning all three games. But they still have their eyes on future transfers.

The Midlands side were very active during the summer, but, as most teams do, they already have their plans lined up for future business as they look to keep growing and growing as a club.

It was reported last week that Monchi had sent Villa scouts to watch defender Nathan Zeze, as they plan to make a move for the player in 2025. The Frenchman has emerged on the radar of a few clubs around Europe, with Liverpool and Chelsea also interested in his services. Zeze is only 19, and it would be a statement of intent if they could beat some of Europe’s big sides to secure the Nantes’ centre-back’s signature.

Kenan Yildiz celebrates.

As well as looking at Zeze, Villa are also interested in Juventus attacker Kenan Yildiz, and they are planning to make their move in the January transfer window. There are several clubs looking to sign the Turkish international, but Emery’s side are the most interested as of right now.

The transfer news doesn’t stop there for Villa fans, as they continue to have their eye on a player they have been linked with before, and he is someone that Emery knows very well.

Aston Villa plotting transfer swoop for £50m star

According to Caught Offside, Aston Villa are interested in signing Villarreal winger/midfielder Alex Baena. However, Villa face two obstacles, as the deal will not be cheap to complete, and they also face competition from fellow Premier League rivals Newcastle United.

Villa, along with the Magpies, have had scouts in place to watch Baena in recent La Liga games, and they have both been left impressed by the player’s performance. Baena, who has a 60 million euros release clause (£50m), is said to be open to the idea of moving to the Premier League.

Furthermore, the Villarreal man, who has been described as being “fantastic player” by Football Talent Scout Jacek Kulig, is keen on working under Emery again, as the pair worked together at Villarreal. The 23-year-old came through the academy at the Spanish side, and after his loan spell at Girona in the 2021/22 season, Baena has become an important player for the Yellow Submarine.

The report states that Baena wanting to work with Emery again could give Villa the edge over Newcastle in this transfer race, but both options are tempting for the player, as Villa continue to rise up the Premier League and perform in Europe, while Newcastle continue to push for a place in Europe’s big league. Villa were also reported to be keeping an eye on Baena back in September.

Glasner’s "outstanding" Crystal Palace star can help to shackle Cunha

Oliver Glasner’s Crystal Palace got their first win on the board for the Premier League season, beating Tottenham 1-0 last weekend. This win took them out of the relegation zone, putting them 17th on six points, after nine games played.

The Eagles even made it two wins on the spin, with an EFL Cup victory over Aston Villa, beating Unai Emery’s side 2-1 at Villa Park. Glasner’s side have been drawn against Arsenal in the quarter-final of the competition which will be played at the Emirates.

But Palace’s next game comes against Wolverhampton Wanderers in the league, looking to make it back-to-back Premier League wins, and three wins on the bounce overall. And in order to stop Wolves, shackling their most dangerous player will be key.

Wolves' key man

The Old Gold are currently holding the fifth least possession in the Premier League this season with 44.7%, are taking the fouth fewest shots per game with 10.7, and have only managed to score 12 goals this season, leaving them 11th for most goals scored.

Matheus Cunha

Four of those 12 goals have been scored by Wolves star man, Matheus Cunha, coming off the back of a superb 2023/24 season. Last campaign, the Brazilian made 36 appearances, scoring 14 goals and providing eight assists, totalling 2,772 minutes played.

Wolves signed Cunha in 2022, initially joining on a season-long loan, which then became a permanent transfer for around £44m.

Now the 25-year-old is seen as one of their most important players, and in order for Palace to beat Wolves on Saturday, stopping Cunha will be vital.

Crystal Palace's Cunha solution

Luckily for Glasner, summer signing on loan from Chelsea, Trevoh Chalobah, is finding his feet at the club at the exact right time.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast's Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

The 25-year-old defender, described as “outstanding” in the past by content creator Alex Goldberg, has now made three appearances for the Eagles since joining this summer.

He has started the past three Premier League games, his first against Liverpool in a narrow 1-0 defeat, his second in another narrow 1-0 defeat against Nottingham Forest, and then his third in the 1-0 victory over Tottenham, keeping a clean sheet and gaining Palace their first league victory of the season.

Cunha plays on mainly as an inside forward from the left side for Wolves, meaning he is likely to come up against Chalobah, who has been starting as the right-sided central defender in a back three for Palace.

Chalobah has made the most tackles and blocks per 90 of the three central defenders this season (joint for blocks with Guehi), and has made 1.00 interceptions per 90, plus won 2.67 aerial duels per 90, really showcasing the defensive prowess he brings to the side.

Chalobah

By persisting with the Chelsea loanee as the right-sided centre-back, Palace will give themselves a great chance of stopping Cunha, as their best defender this campaign (by the metrics for defensive actions) will be directly up against him, and he certainly has the recovery pace and 1v1 defending attributes to deal with the tricky Brazilian.

A consolidated effort from bowlers, followed by contributions from Sharjeel Khan, Sarfaraz Ahmed and Anwar Ali with the bat, helped Sindh beat Northern by four wickets.Batting first, Northern got off to a decent start putting in 27 in 3.3 overs before opener Umar Amin was dismissed, following which wickets started falling in regular intervals. The scoring rate went down, as no batter scored more than Mohammad Nawaz, who made a 30 off 34. Imad Wasim (18 off 13) and Haris Rauf (19 off 9) helped pushed the score further but Northern could only post a modest 136. Shahnawaz Dahani (3 for 26), Mohammad Hasnain (2 for 40) and Zahid Mahmood (2 for 25) were the pick of the bowlers for Sindh.Sindh were off to a strong start in the chase with Sharjeel Khan hammering 23 in the first two overs. But three quick wickets in space of nine balls meant Sindh had to take the conservative route, as Sarfaraz and Anwar batted with caution to take them to a win. A comprehensive all-round performance from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) saw them ease past Southern Punjab (SP) by seven wickets. KP found both their bowlers and batters on song in a comfortable win that takes them top of the table.Mohammad Rizwan had opted to field first, and with arguably the best bowling attack in the league, it was easy to see why he felt confident. Imran Khan and Mohammad Wasim found themselves among the wickets early to stifle SP up front, and while Mohammad Imran tried to hold the innings together, wickets continued to fall at the other end. Shaheen Afridi, who had gone wicketless in his first spell, returned to remove the dangerous Khushdil as well as the stubborn Mohammad Imran, and aside from a breezy 14-ball 25 from Hassan Khan, there was limited resistance from the lower order as SP folded for 152.Naseem Shah gave SP some hope by getting rid of Fakhar Zaman early but, thereafter, KP assumed control. Rizwan’s breathtaking 2021 continued with another commanding, assured anchoring role in the chase, while Sahibzada Farhan took on a more pugnacious role at the other end. The duo kept SP at bay for the best part of the innings in a sensational 136-run second-wicket partnership, and by the time both fell off consecutive deliveries either side of the 17th-over mark, the game was all but done. Adil Amin and Iftikhar Ahmed knocked off the remaining runs to keep SP winless after two games.

Newcastle named most likely club to sign Lille star Jonathan David in 2025

Newcastle United’s financial muscle means they are in pole position to sign a prolific attacking player, according to a fresh transfer rumour.

Newcastle transfer news

The Magpies continue to be linked with possible new signings ahead of the upcoming transfer windows, with Andrija Maksimovic being touted as a target. The 17-year-old is currently thriving at Red Star Belgrade and would be considered a long-term prospect who can grow into a star over time.

Omar Marmoush is a hugely talented player who has been likened to Liverpool superstar Mohamed Salah, with the Eintracht Frankfurt star also backed to seal a move to Newcastle soon. The attacking ace has scored an incredible eight goals in just six Bundesliga appearances so far this season, including a last-gasp equaliser against Bayern Munich on Sunday.

Another wide player who has been mentioned as an option for the Magpies is Bryan Mbeumo, with the Brentford ace also enjoying a fantastic start to the 2024/25 campaign. His goal at home to Wolves over the weekend means he has six in the Premier League already this season.

Newcastle and Manchester United are reportedly going head-to-head to complete the signing of Borussia Dortmund attacker Karim Adeyemi, too, as Paul Mitchell looks to beat his predecessor Dan Ashworth to his services.

Newcastle boosted in efforts to sign 24 y/o striker

According to Sport Mediaset [via Sport Witness], Newcastle are still firmly in the race to sign Lille striker Jonathan David, with their financial strength putting them ahead of Inter Milan and Barcelona as the most likely club to snap him up. Inter are believed to have already made strides to sign the 24-year-old on a free transfer next summer, but the Magpies have the edge because of their wealth, potentially offering the soon-to-be free agent a hefty salary.

Newcastle should be doing everything they can to acquire David’s signature, given his reputation as a massive talent with the world at his feet. He has a superb record at both club and international level, scoring 92 goals in 196 appearances for Lille, as well as 29 goals in 56 caps for Canada.

Meanwhile, former youth coach Hanny El-Magrabi has hailed his brilliance, backing him to become truly elite over time: “I enjoyed coaching the person, not just the player. What impressed me most was him continuing to be the person that he was here and carrying that with him in Europe – leading by example. He can be one of the best players in the world in a very short time. The sky is the limit.”

Inter and Barca are massive clubs in their own right, so it is understandable why David could eye a move to either, but the fact that Newcastle are in a stronger financial position will certainly be significant.

With the Lille hero out of contract at the end of this season, the Magpies could offer the Canadian huge wages that the other clubs can’t, and the hope is that it helps them strike a deal.
