Dane Paterson seeks Nottinghamshire Kolpak deal despite COVID-19 uncertainty

South Africa seamer made Test debut against England in January but was overlooked for one-day squads

Firdose Moonda06-Apr-2020Dane Paterson, the seamer who made his Test debut for South Africa in the 2019-20 summer, has ended his career in his home country and intends to play professionally in England from this season.Paterson could be left in limbo, however, after an interview to confirm his Kolpak deal with Nottinghamshire, scheduled for March 23, was postponed by the COVID-19 pandemic, amid great uncertainty around the fate of the English summer.ALSO READ: PCA backs move to two overseas players as Brexit pushes Kolpak window shutWhen Kolpak deals become invalid, which is due to happen when the UK leaves the European Union on December 31, Paterson will continue playing in England as an overseas professional, although it is unclear if counties will still be able to accommodate foreign players. Despite the uncertainty over the start of the cricket season in the UK, Paterson has not been re-contracted to his local domestic franchise, the Cobras.Paterson’s decision caught Cricket South Africa off guard, especially given that acting director of cricket Graeme Smith had been in communication with the ECB and the CEO of the Cobras’ franchise, Nabeal Dien, while Paterson was weighing up his options.Paterson was approached by Notts in late February, at which point Dien took the news to Smith, who made contact with ECB chief Tom Harrison. Upon learning that Kolpak deals will cease to exist at the end of 2020, Smith relayed the information to Dien and was then informed Paterson had changed his mind and would remain in South Africa.ALSO READ: England players volunteer salary reduction amid season uncertaintySince then, however, Paterson has had another rethink and decided to pursue his opportunity in England, forcing Smith to remove Paterson from South Africa’s winter training squad. “It surprises me that he made that decision, given all the information he had,” Smith said. However, Ashwell Prince, Paterson’s coach at the Cobras, was sympathetic to the choice his former player had made.”When a player gets to over 30, especially as a bowler, they don’t have that many years left in you,” Prince said. “I’m sure these guys sit down and calculate what realistic opportunities will they have of playing for the Proteas and if not, they will consider other options. I think this is probably how this came about.”Paterson debuted at Port Elizabeth in January and played in two of the four Tests against England this summer. However, he was overlooked for the one-day leg of the summer against England and Australia, despite already having four ODI and eight T20 caps, a fact which Prince believes may also have forced his hand.”It is disappointing but the player is also asking themselves, ‘if I just played for the Proteas a few weeks ago, why am I not in any one-day squads, any T20 squads?’. He might be thinking maybe he only played in that Test because so many guys were injured. KG [Rabada] was suspended, [Lungi] Ngidi was unfit or injured and then the one-day squads come out, the T20 squads come out and he didn’t feature in any of them.”South Africa endured a torrid home season, losing the Test series 1-3 to England and winning only one out of the five series they played, an ODI rubber against Australia. While their Test campaign was blighted by the absence of Ngidi, who was sidelined with a hamstring injury, and Rabada’s suspension, their limited-overs squads were experimental as they sought to cast the selection net widely.Smith explained that the team management is in the process of working through long-term plans for players, including Paterson, who was among the 40 players earmarked for intense training camps. Although those sessions have yet to get underway, with the country currently on the 11th day of a 21-day lockdown, Paterson will no longer be part of them.Paterson is the fourth player to attempt to take up a Kolpak deal ahead of the 2020 summer. Hashim Amla and Vernon Philander, who have both retired from international cricket, were due to begin deals with Surrey and Somerset respectively while Farhaan Behardien ended his Titans’ career and signed with Durham.Dwaine Pretorius would have been the fifth after he, like Paterson, was courted by Nottinghamshire but Pretorius did not follow through with the deal after discussions with CSA. Pretorius also made his Test debut in the series against England and has since been awarded a national contract. An insider told ESPNcricinfo that Pretorius had not been guaranteed game-time or a central contract as an incentive to stay in South Africa but was provided with reassurance that he was in the selectors’ plans across all three formats. The same cannot be said of Paterson, who was only considered for Tests this summer and who the same source believes “still has quite a lot of work to do on his own game”.

4/10 Arsenal star just ruined their hopes of winning the Champions League

In April of 2023, everything fell apart for Mikel Arteta's Arsenal. A run of wretched games saw their Premier League title hopes ultimately fade away with a whimper.

This season it looked as though the Gunners had learnt their lesson. 2024 has been dominated by swashbuckling football, notably putting six past Sheffield United and West Ham, and five past Burnley.

However, lessons have seemingly not been learnt, notably by the manager whose squad management must be called out. Indeed, April is here again and a withered, tired-looking group of players look out for the count.

A 2-0 defeat to Aston Villa last Sunday was bad enough, only for the Londoners to then fall to a second-leg defeat in Munich, beaten 1-0 on the night and 3-2 on aggregate by Harry Kane's Bayern.

Losing to the Bundesliga giants is usually nothing to be ashamed of. However, Thomas Tuchel's side have not been at the races this term, conceding the German top-flight trophy for the first time in 11 years. They do, however, still boast a chance of winning the Champions League.

The back end of this campaign promised so much for Arsenal but it's all ending in rather predictable circumstances; without a trophy.

It's a bitter pill to swallow for supporters, who notably saw a number of fan favourites fail to deliver on the biggest of stages. An isolated Gabriel Martinelli – who simply hasn't been the same player this season – struggled to have much of an impact, the same could be said for Bukayo Saka.

Arsenal's biggest underperformer against Bayern

This honour could have been given to a number of players in green on Wednesday evening. Kai Havertz started up top as an out ball but once moved into the centre of midfield following Gabriel Jesus' introduction barely had a kick.

However, it was a player we all hold in such high regard who had one of his worst nights in Arsenal colours; Saka.

It is difficult to point the blame at such a well-loved figure. He has been there since the start of this project and dragged Arteta's team through many a moment. This season he is still the club's top scorer on 18 goals but his powers have waned towards the end of the term.

The Englishman missed the home match with Luton a few weeks ago because of injury and truth be told, he hasn't really looked too fit since.

He has found the net just twice in his last eight outings and only has one assist to show for his troubles since 20th January. For a young individual so creative, so full of flair, it's hugely disappointing.

Bayern are no mugs defensively but without Alphonso Davies, ruled out due to suspension at the Allianz on Wednesday, Saka had a wonderful opportunity to dominate up against Noussair Mazraoui, a right-back playing at left-back.

Did he dominate? No is the short answer. The 22-year-old received no change from the Moroccan with Arsenal's number 7 failing to complete any of his three dribble attempts or four crosses.

Handed a 4/10 match rating courtesy of GOAL's Charles Watts, the Arsenal reporter noted that he was 'always on the fringes of things'. What didn't help were Saka's actions towards the end of the game. Having taken a quick free-kick, spurning the chance to get the ball into the area with seconds remaining, he planted the resulting corner straight at the man at the near post.

That just about summed up the winger's display with Saka left to rue a night where he failed to provide a single key pass or have a shot. This was a night to stand up and be counted but their main man did not do so.

Key to Arsenal's summer will be finding a player Arteta can rotate Saka with. He looked spent in Germany and it is hardly surprising for someone who's missed just three games all campaign. It's back to the drawing board for the Gunners.

Ben Laughlin, a long-time part of the Strikers attack, has moved to the Brisbane Heat for family reasons, with Harry Conway coming into the squad. Cameron White, in what is likely to be the final fling of his career, brings winning experience from the Melbourne Renegades.Australia impactHead and possibly Michael Neser will be featuring in the Test side until early January, and Alex Carey will be lost to the ODI tour India mid-tournament. There is a chance that if Neser remains in the Test squad he could be released for BBL duty if not needed against New Zealand.Player to watchWes Agar has been bowling very well in Marsh Cup and Sheffield Shield cricket this season and, after just two matches for the Strikers last summer, could get greater opportunity in this campaign particularly with the departure of Laughlin and if Neser is on Australia duty.Key stat (Gaurav Sundararaman)Rashid Khan’s form might have dipped in other T20s and ODIs in 2019 but his performance in the Big Bash is extraordinary. Their much-vaunted top order made a lot of bright starts but fizzled out quickly and the order was chopped and changed throughout the tournament. They saved their best work for the last two games with two magnificent chases but it was too little too late. What’s changed for the season?A new coach and a few new bash brothers. Darren Lehmann, who led the Heat to the title in BBL02, takes charge again after Daniel Vettori stepped down. The signing of AB de Villiers and Tom Banton made a huge stir. They will play half the tournament each with de Villiers available for the finals. The Heat have the best batting line-up in the BBL but historically the best bowling teams have won the tournament and they will need to bowl well. Laughlin’s return to Queensland from the Strikers having won a title in Adelaide is a nice addition.Australia impactJames Pattinson’s availability early in the tournament is subject to his Test duties but he could play more games than the Heat had planned for, given the form of Australia’s incumbent Test quicks. Joe Burns and Marnus Labuschagne will be unavailable in the early part of the tournament but both may even struggle to get a game for the Heat given the batting depth. It is unlikely many Heat players will head to India with the ODI team, although Labuschagne was named joint player of the Marsh Cup and Australia may want to look at him in a second format if they experiment with the side.Player to watchMax Bryant is the obvious choice. He has so much potential but capitalising on starts and finding consistency as a young player is his biggest challenge. He has had a lean season in 50-over cricket for Queensland but a couple of early scores in the BBL and he could go have a huge tournament.Key stat (Gaurav Sundararaman)Tom Banton comes into this competition with very high expectations. Out of the 41 players to have faced 200 balls in powerplays in 2019, Banton has the best strike rate of 160. He scores big and at a brisk pace. The Gabba pitch could be perfect for Banton to showcase his skills.

Weatherald and Carey lay platform for South Australia's lead

Tasmania 254 and 1 for 6 trail South Australia 346 (Weatherald 126, Carey 73, Bird 4-70) by 86 runsJake Weatherald’s second century of the season against Tasmania, a commanding innings from Alex Carey and useful lower-order runs put South Australia in control as they hunt that elusive Sheffield Shield victory.Weatherald, who scored a career-best 198 when the sides last met, and Carey added 128 for the fourth wicket after South Australia had lost 3 for 8 to slip to 3 for 57 in the morning session.Carey, who struck 11 boundaries, looked set for a century before being well held at second slip when he drove at Riley Meredith. When Weatherald’s fine innings was ended, lbw to Jackson Bird, and Chadd Sayers followed to the same bowler, South Australia were 8 for 263 – a lead of just nine – before Nick Winter and Joe Mennie added 73 for the ninth wicket. Mennie was last-man out for 49.With four overs to bowl, South Australia’s day ended on a high when Winter trapped Alex Doolan lbw with the last ball of the day. However, although the opener wasn’t playing a shot the decision looked dubious.

'We can't give power to those who want to divide people' – Liverpool star Ibrahima Konate makes emotional plea for France to vote against far-right in upcoming election

France go to vote on June 30 & July 7 Far-right ideology emerging as a potent force Konate joined Mbappe urging to vote for inclusivity WHAT HAPPENED?

Speaking ahead of France’s last-16 game against Belgium in the European Championship, Konate expressed his deep concern over the rise of far-right politics in France. He emphasized the importance of unity and diversity, urging citizens to vote against divisive ideologies.

AdvertisementGettyTHE BIGGER PICTURE

French people will lock their votes on June 30 and July 7 after President Emmanuel Macron called for snap elections. The President was forced his hand to schedule elections as the far-right achieved notable success in the European Parliament elections. The stakes are high, as this parliamentary election could see the country’s far-right nationalists gain significant power, even though Macron’s presidential position is not up for grabs.

WHAT KONATE SAID

“Of course what is happening in France worries me,” said Konate to the media.

"We can’t leave power in the hands of people who want to divide people. Diversity is France’s strength. I come from an immigrant family. Prejudice and stereotypes have to stop, we all have to be together in all circumstances. I’m saddened by the ban on wearing the veil in the public space. You never hear from the people affected by these issues…You have to look beyond appearances, beyond skin colour, you have to go and meet the other person. You can’t make a jigsaw puzzle with just the same pieces, you need diversity, and different pieces to build something solid.

"There’s always a minority who will harm the majority. My parents have (had) jobs as cleaning ladies, and binmen, with impossible working hours, and when I see that we don’t highlight these kinds of people who have given their health for France, it saddens me. I encourage everyone to go and vote, I know it’s a personal choice, I don’t tell people what to vote for, but we have to be together in all circumstances. Life is short, it’s beautiful and we have to enjoy it and be together and not be divisive.”

Eoin Morgan tees off in record chase as Middlesex progress at Somerset's expense

Tom Abell’s maiden T20 hundred comes in a losing cause as Middlesex overhaul 227 target thanks to Eoin Morgan 83*

It is turning into an extraordinary summer for Eoin Morgan. A World Cup-winning captain, he followed up at Taunton with the most extraordinary Blast innings of the season as Middlesex confounded expectations by pulling off a record T20 chase with breathtaking simplicity. No county had ever hauled in a score as large as Somerset’s 226 for 5 but Middlesex did it with six wickets and three overs to spare with Morgan’s coup de grace a startling unbeaten 83 from 29 balls that was such a simple display of uninhibited hitting it almost defied description. Thirteen of the 29 balls he faced went to boundaries. You’re a long time retired and even allowing for the natural adrenalin slump in the weeks after a World Cup triumph, the thought that Morgan might retire at 32 and not lead England in the World T20 in Australia in late 2020 is hard to countenance.”Does an innings like that make playing on more appealing?” he was asked on Sky Sports. “It probably does,” he said, before adding: “It’s a big decision. I don’t want to let anybody down. I want to take time to make my decision.”ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Somerset’s bowlers cracked under the pressure in a must-win match. As much as Morgan, and others, took advantage of Taunton’s short boundaries, and the flattest hybrid pitch yet seen in English cricket, Middlesex will rarely receive so many please-hit-me deliveries. The omission of Craig Overton, even allowing for his modest season, looked costly. For Somerset’s captain Tom Abell, a maiden T20 century should have been cause for unbridled satisfaction. Instead, there was only heartache. The first thing you spot about Abell in Twenty20 cricket is the desire. He appears to crave victory because it is the right and proper thing to do.A year ago, he struggled horribly, using up 18 balls for an unbeaten 21 as Somerset threw away a chance to chase 232 against Kent at Canterbury and so reach the last eight. This time, every shot he played had Middlesex’s international top five at the back of his mind, but once again Somerset fell short.”At the halfway stage we were a little bit frustrated with the way we had bowled,” Middlesex’s captain Dawid Malan said. “But you only have to get the ball in the air to get six here and if you beat the field it is four.”Malan contributed to an electrifying start. By the time Malan and Paul Striling fell in successive balls from Tim Groenewald, Middlesex were 67 for 2 after four overs.Middlesex’s Powerplay score was their highest ever – 94 for 2 – before Mohammad Hafeez fell to a cute run out at the bowler’s end by Roelof van der Merwe, who fielded a return drive off his own bowling from AB de Villiers in conventional fashion and then rolled the ball through his legs to hit the stumps.Max Waller appeared so overawed by the challenge of bowling legspin to de Villiers on this sort of surface that the South African greeted one mishit six against a long hop with a roll of the eyes. But when de Villiers refocused it was to find Waller pulling off a brilliant right-handed catch above his head at straight midwicket to dismiss him for 32.With 87 needed off eight, Morgan’s eyes narrowed. He took a view on the left-arm seam of Tom Lammonby, taking 23 off the over, the second of three sixes somewhat fortunate as Babar Azam, who had just returned to the field, staggered back stiffly into the rope at long-on. By the end, Morgan had eight sixes, each one more predictable than the last.Tom Abell celebrates his maiden century•Getty Images

There is much talk of Somerset’s bank of young talent, but Abell will have to supervise a difficult transition. Peter Trego has been released and, who knows James Hildreth may not have too many seasons left as far as Twenty20 is concerned, his latest struggle, 18 from 12 balls, having the careworn mood of a senior pro not quite sure of his touch. And, as for Tom Banton, who knows where his future will lie?Babar and Banton have been the source of Somerset’s inspiration – the two leading scorers in the Blast. Babar departed first ball to Toby Roland-Jones but Banton, the darling of the TV cameras in limited-overs cricket all summer, upped the adoration level with 62 from 39 balls.Banton was badly dropped on the shot that took him to his fourth half-century of the tournament, a top-edged pull against Steven Finn which Tom Helm made a mess off, his mouth open like a basking lizard: it was a stressful night all round but it was not the best way for him to regulate his body temperature. It was upon Banton’s dismissal that Somerset’s innings found momentum as Abell and Ed Byrom put on 95 in 43 balls.Abell has been overshadowed by the openers all summer, stout-heartedly developing his own support act. He should have been run out on 4 when Nathan Sowter fumbled a throw from the cover boundary at the bowler’s end, but from that point played the field – in the nicest possible way. Give him a gap in the field and he maneuvered the ball there. This time, his tricky ramp shot which has served him well throughout the tournament was rarely seen as he discovered a more powerful game. “Twenty20 hasn’t really been my thing,” he said.It felt as if Abell’s century might not quite be achieved, but after the dismissal of Lewis Gregory for a first-ball duck (Gregory was not fit to bowl), he found himself on strike on 90 with four balls remaining.Once again his game management came into play. Roland-Jones, Middlesex’s most economical bowler, was twice worked through square leg for boundaries and he scrubbed out a hard-run two for his hundred. Somerset had 133 from the last 10. It felt good, it felt last-eight, but it was nothing of the sort.

Spurs want "superb" new player alongside Nusa with Ange very keen on move

Looking to finish off a successful January transfer window in style, Tottenham Hotspur are now reportedly eyeing a move to sign a player who could be the perfect partner for James Maddison.

Tottenham transfer news

The Lilywhites have already signed both Timo Werner and Radu Dragusin this month to hand Ange Postecoglou a major boost at both ends of the pitch. But they might not be done there, with reports linking the North London club with a move for Antonio Nusa. Spurs are reportedly in pole position to sign the young winger this month in a deal that could be worth £25m. Meanwhile, they've also been linked with a move to sign Blackburn Rovers youngster Adam Wharton and Atalanta midfielder Ederson.

santiago-gimenez-timo-werner-tottenham-opinion

Whilst it remains to be seen whether Spurs will complete further deals before the end of the window, it certainly doesn't seem like they're shortlist is lacking potential targets. Another new target on that list is now seemingly Sebastian Szymanski, who has played a starring role in his debut campaign at Fenerbahce so far.

According to Turkish outlet Askam, Spurs 'will do everything' they can to sign Szymanski and will send scouts to watch the attacking midfielder against Samsunspor. A player that Postecoglou is reportedly personally very keen on, the North London club may have to pay out as much as around €35m (£30m) if they want to land the Polish midfielder this month or, indeed, in the summer transfer window.

Although links with Ederson and Wharton suggest that Spurs are looking to sign a more defensive midfielder this month, it seems as though they could yet turn to Szymanski to boost the offensive side of Postecoglou's team in the middle of the park in the remaining days of the transfer window. Enjoying an impressive season in Turkey, Szymanski is certainly one to watch in the next week or so.

"Superb" Szymanski is a star on the rise

Szymanski's stats paint the picture of a player at the top of his game and one who could quickly become the perfect partner to Maddison at Spurs. The Fenerbahce midfielder has already been involved in 26 goals this season, scoring 12 and assisting 14 in all competitions to more than earn the interest of those in North London. It is a rise that Football Talent Scout's Jacek Kulig will be proud of, that's for sure, having praised the midfielder during his Dynamo Moscow days. Kulig posted on X:

Szymanski's versatility is also an impressive trait. The 24-year-old can play as a central midfielder, attacking midfielder and a right-winger in what could hand Postecoglou a boost across three different positions. With time running out in the transfer window, though, the Lilywhites have it all to do if they are to land the Fenerbahce star this month.
