A record season for cricket attendances in Australia only serves to highlight the importance of maintaining the existing revenue-share model between players and Cricket Australia, according to the Australian Cricketers’ Association. The day after the conclusion of the 2016-17 summer of cricket, CA released figures that showed 1,863,846 people attended elite cricket in Australia throughout the season, up on the previous record of 1,727,270 set last summer. While CA was happy with the crowds for the two day-night Tests played during the season, against South Africa in Adelaide and against Pakistan at the Gabba, it also noted the continued strength of the BBL and WBBL tournaments. The BBL averaged 30,114 attendees per game, up 8% on last year, which CA said made it the fifth biggest sports league in terms of average attendance in the world.Notably, these figures come as CA and the players are embroiled in an ongoing pay dispute, centred around CA’s desire to scrap the revenue-sharing model that has existed for two decades. The ACA chief executive Alistair Nicholson said the record figures showed the importance of maintaining the existing system.”Australian cricket is enjoying success built on the hard work of players and administrators alike,” Nicholson said. “Hard work supported by a partnership which undeniably works. These figures are proof of that. We have a successful game built on a successful partnership and long may that continue.”Crucially, its success across all formats with truly exciting results in the domestic game as well. Whether at national, State or Big Bash level, the public’s appetite for cricket throughout the summer is fantastic. The figures clearly indicate the importance of all formats of the game in growing fan and viewer engagement, and is really a testament to how the players at all levels contribute to this.”It also highlights that the domestic players, as much as the national players, contribute to cricket’s success in this country. This is a point we will continue to reinforce in the current MOU negotiations, because we are wondering why CA would seek to break such a successful partnership model given it is clearly working so well.”CA chief executive James Sutherland also commended the players for their part in driving the success of the game.”The interest in the elite level of our game, is also translating to our grassroots, where we are already seeing an increase in our preliminary participation figures compared to last season,” Sutherland said. “Thanks must go to the players who take part in all of our formats. The BBL and WBBL players in particular are helping to inspire the next generation through their ongoing fan engagement and brilliant action on the field.”

Kohli's India brace for England's power

England’s batting line-up, full of depth and power, poses a massive threat to India as they begin a home series under a new ODI captain

The Preview by Sidharth Monga14-Jan-2017Match factsSunday, January 15, 2017

Agarkar: Can’t leave out Yuvraj after picking him in the squad

Big pictureThe cricketing gods must be crazy. We are living in an era where India are regularly winning Test series 3-0 and 4-0, having done so only twice in their history until 2012. In ODIs, on the other hand, they are not starting as favourites in a series against even after beating them 4-0 in Tests. England are not the clear favourites either, but it says a lot about their metamorphosis since the 2015 World Cup that they start on even terms against a side that has beaten them in four of the last five bilateral ODI series and is 17-8 in recent ODI cricket between them. And England are not apologetic about pushing the boundaries in ODIs independent of how the Test side is performing.India and MS Dhoni have recognised that they, for a change, need motivation from their Test side. That the split captaincy doesn’t work. So Virat Kohli, who has tasted early success in Tests, takes over an ODI side that is desperately in need of new ideas and match-winners in the middle order.England have batting match-winners all the way down. Which is why they keep coming at you with the big shots, the switch hits and the reverse-sweeps. India will look to bat more clinically, relying as they do on a smaller base of batsmen, especially given Rohit Sharma’s absence. Either way there will be runs. A lot of them. The contest, though, will come down to the bowlers. One spell of 10 overs for 45 runs or one extra wicket in the middle overs. England will rely more on discipline of their pace bowlers, India on the spinners. A flat pitch will give England the advantage, and the slightest hint of slowness or turn will give India control. The day-night warm-up match played at the Brabourne Stadium between an England XI and India A showed a lot of what to expect: Chris Woakes and David Willey were tight at the start, keeping India A down to 304, and India A came back in their defence through the spin of Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal. England XI scored 156 for 1 off the 24.5 overs bowled by the quicks, and 148 for 6 in 24 overs of spin. The pitches for ODIs, though, are generally flat. And India wouldn’t necessarily want too much help for the spinners: they wouldn’t want to be chasing 250 on turning pitches, as demonstrated in the defeats against New Zealand in Delhi and Ranchi, and Adil Rashid cannot be underestimated in ODIs. Early starts to the matches – 1.30pm as opposed to 2.30pm in earlier years – should make dew and the toss less of a factor. Hopefully.Form guideIndia WLWLW (last five completed matches, most recent first)
England WLWLWEoin Morgan comes into the series with scores of 3 and 0 in the warm-up games•AFP

In the spotlightDhoni has had his share of eulogies. Now the attention must shift to Virat Kohli. He operates differently to India’s most successful limited-overs captain. His first call of duty will be to deal with Dhoni’s batting order. Will he give Dhoni a long stint at No. 4 and start looking for other finishers? What plans does he have for Yuvraj Singh? How is he going to utilise his Test talisman R Ashwin, who had seemingly fallen out of favour with Dhoni in the final stages of his captaincy? Does Ajinkya Rahane have a place in India’s ODI plans when everybody is fit? And Kohli will have to keep winning matches with the bat while he does all that thinking.Kohli’s counterpart Eoin Morgan, on the other hand, is going through a bit of a Dhoni patch in a batting line-up full of power hitters. He is often required in pressure situations and during good times he hardly gets enough balls to face to register big innings. His last century came in June 2015, he has averaged 38.00 since then and has won one match award in 25 matches. These numbers by themselves shouldn’t put him under pressure, but he has scored 3 and a golden duck in the tour games after Sam Billings impressed as his replacement when he opted out of the Bangladesh tour. He too will now have decisions and runs to make.Team newsIndia’s squad looks completely different to the one that beat New Zealand 3-2. The two Test spinners are back, and Yuvraj is part of the 15 too. Looking at England’s struggle against spin in practice games, India could look to stack the side up with batsmen who bowl part-time spin. Manish Pandey could make way for Yuvraj but where does the man in irrepressible form, KL Rahul, fit? One way out could be to give up on Hardik Pandya or Umesh Yadav and rely on Yuvraj and Kedar Jadhav for 10 overs. Otherwise one out of the returning Rahane, Rahul and the returning Shikhar Dhawan might have to sit out. And does Kohli make the call of sitting out Amit Mishra, the spinner who took five wickets in his last ODI, just because the Test spinners are back?India (probable): 1 Shikhar Dhawan, 2 Ajinkya Rahane/ KL Rahul, 3 Virat Kohli (capt.), 4 MS Dhoni (wk), 5 Yuvraj Singh, 6 Kedar Jadhav, 7 Hardik Pandya, 8 Ravindra Jadeja, 9 R Ashwin/ Amit Mishra, 10 Umesh Yadav, 11 Jasprit BumrahAs they suggested with their line-ups in the warm-up games, England could look to play six batsmen, including the allrounder Ben Stokes and the wicketkeeper Jos Buttler, and five bowlers. This means they might have to make more than one difficult decision, and leave out both Sam Billings, who scored a match-winning 93 in the first warm-up game, as well as the in-form Jonny Bairstow. England (probable): 1 Jason Roy, 2 Alex Hales, 3 Joe Root, 4 Jos Buttler (wk), 5 Eoin Morgan (capt), 6 Ben Stokes, 7 Moeen Ali, 8 Chris Woakes, 9 David Willey, 10 Adil Rashid, 11 Liam Plunkett/Liam DawsonAmit Mishra took a five-for in his last ODI, but may have to sit out this one with R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja back in India’s squad•Associated Press

Pitch and conditionsThe pitch is expected to be a regular ODI surface where 300 from both sides cannot be counted out. Two days before the match India’s coach Anil Kumble said there hadn’t been any dew until 7.30pm but you cannot be certain in this time of year in India when dew usually affects day-night games. If the dew does show up at around 8pm, it still has an hour and a half to play havoc in, and the last 90 minutes of an ODI can often sway the result.Stats and trivia In four matches against India, Alex Hales averages 23 and has struck at 68.65 per 100 balls as against corresponding overall numbers of 37.77 and 94.49. In 2014, India choked his off-side game by cramping him with straight inswingers. England have won only one bilateral series in India in eight attempts, back in 1984. This is only the second ODI at this venue: in the first, Australia scored 304 and defended comfortably.QuotesI was actually pretty delighted to be given the captaincy for all the three formats. It adds to the responsibility and makes you a better player, a better person; that’s something I have always liked that aspect of captaincy.
You wake up on the weekend and all you wanted to do was play cricket. You look out the window and hope the sun was shining. So that kind of attitude is very important. It’s a nice way to play cricket regardless of you win, lose or draw.

Leeds Eye "Powerful" £51k-p/w Rodrigo Replacement

Leeds United have been a side never shy in front of goal, whether it be under the exceptional Marcelo Bielsa or even the struggling Jesse Marsch.

Even when trundling towards the drop last term, the Whites still managed to notch 48 goals, outscoring most of their relegation competition. This does mark a far cry from the 62 they scored during that imperious return to the top flight though.

rodrigo-leeds-united

However, recent reports have emerged suggesting that Rodrigo, their top scorer from that torrid later campaign, has a release clause of just €3.5m (£3m), making the Spaniard ripe for the plucking from Elland Road.

A huge chunk of that aforementioned figure could be set to depart.

Given he was initially bought for £27m, the club are set to make a monumental loss on the 32-year-old who offered a brief glimmer of hope throughout a dark and depressing year in Yorkshire.

To offset such financial failures, the 49ers will have to be shrewd in this summer window, likely scouring from within the Championship or the free-agent market to find their deals.

Fortunately, an option within the latter has come to light, with soon-to-be departing Lyon forward Moussa Dembele free from his £51k-per-week contract this summer, and reportedly on the list of Leeds' new ownership.

Could Moussa Dembele replace Rodrigo at Leeds United?

Having scored 13 league goals for a relegated side, Rodrigo has already proven himself a fine asset more than capable of starring in the top flight. His exit is almost a guarantee given the tiny fee attached to him.

However, this French forward could perhaps pose a fine alternative, despite the statistics of late suggesting a recent loss of form.

Just three goals in 23 Ligue 1 showings are a harsh indicator, given the form of Alexandre Lacazette ahead of him. The 26-year-old has only started eight games in the league.

As the machine-like striker in the season prior, he showcased his true talents by finding the net on 21 occasions, proving himself more than capable of leading the line. When handed confidence and a run of games, the former Celtic man has proven his talent in front of goal.

That spell in Scotland, where he would score 51 goals in just 94 games, saw Brendan Rodgers rush to praise him. The currently out-of-work manager claimed:

"Moussa has everything with his power and pace. It was a different sort of system and the boys looked a real threat and linked up really well.

“His opponent at centre-back was strong but Moussa is so powerful with ability, touch and work rate. He was excellent. I am very pleased to have him back and his contribution."

With the 49ers having inherited something of a mess in this Leeds team, still licking their wounds from a relegation that three different managers could not halt, they could offer some clarity by making a confident first foray into the market.

Not only would it mark a huge statement of intent, but it would also offer an immediate replacement should Rodrigo exit Elland Road.

Key Update On Future Of £80k-A-Week Chelsea Hero

Chelsea are still hoping to make Mason Mount have a "last-ditch" change of heart over his future, according to a key claim from journalist Ben Jacobs.

Is Mount leaving Chelsea this summer?

The future of the 24-year-old has been a major talking point of late, with it looking increasingly likely that he will move on to pastures new this summer.

Mount has had a frustrating season by his high standards, with a mixture of injuries and form seeing him struggle for regular starts as the campaign has gone on. With his current Chelsea contract expiring at the end of next season, it is a case of either tying him down to an extension this summer and letting him leave before he exits for free in 2024.

The £80,000-a-week midfielder has been linked with a move to a number of the Blues' rivals, from Liverpool and Manchester United, with a new challenge potentially appealing to him.

Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount.

Could Chelsea persuade Mount to stay?

Speaking to Give Me Sport, Jacobs said that Chelsea are still doing all they can to keep Mount at Stamford Bridge moving forward:

"The situation is still open until Chelsea at least try something last-ditch. But, even if Mount is leaning towards Manchester United, they've still got to strike a deal with Chelsea, and that's the other component to all of this that I think is worth touching upon.

"Chelsea, even though Mount's contract is running down, would be looking for something in the region of £70million or £75million. That's my understanding. I know that some people will say it's even higher than that, but that's the ballpark figure that I think Chelsea would want."

In truth, it does look as though Mount will stay put at Chelsea, as things stand, but he does still have a strong affiliation with the club from a young age, which may not make it easy for him to leave. If Mauricio Pochettino can do his best to sell his ideas to the midfielder, promising him a role as a key man, there could be a late change of heart, but that could be wishful thinking now.

If Mount does opt to move on, it is essential that Chelsea get as much as possible for him, ensuring that those funds can go towards signing a tailor-made replacement – someone who can thrive across several positions and provide similar levels of energy and quality, having been hailed as "fantastic" by Graham Potter.

Donald equals fastest ever double-hundred

Nineteen-year-old Aneurin Donald made an astonishing 234 off 136 balls, equalling the fastest double-century in first-class cricket in his maiden Championship hundred, as Glamorgan piled up 481 for 8 on the first day at a sun-kissed Colwyn Bay.Although he was dropped twice early in his innings, Donald went on to devour the Derbyshire attack in an innings that include 15 sixes and 26 fours. He reached his 100, 150 and finally 200 with sixes – two over midwicket at a top edge to third man for the double – the 123 balls needed for the double putting him level with Ravi Shastri’s innings from 1985 having required just 43 deliveries for his second hundred.”I was pleased because it has put the team in a strong position, and after a lean patch recently, delighted to get a big one,” Donald said. “I had no idea of the records that went, but it was especially pleasing to equal Ravi Shastri’s previous record, as he is a former Glamorgan player”.Asked about reaching three landmarks with sixes, he admitted, “yes, it was in the mind”After electing to bat first on a pitch that encouraged the seamers early on – Derbyshire didn’t help themselves by dropping five catches – Glamorgan lost Mark Wallace in Tony Palladino’s first over before Nick Selman and Will Bragg put on 88 for the second wicket only for Selman and Jacques Rudolph to depart in quick succession.Donald did not appear until 2.10pm but was soon into his stride and was particularly severe on the young legspinner Matt Critchley who was struck for 24 in one over. He added 115 with Bragg and later 130 in 15 overs with Craig Meschede.By the time Donald had struck his 15th and final six, a passing car had been dented on the road outside the ground as had five others in the members enclosure. He was finally dismissed, caught at long-off, after Derbyshire had posted nine fielders on the boundary after two overs of the second new ball had been taken. To their credit, every Derbyshire player rushed to congratulate Donald as he left the field. He became the youngest double-centurion in the club’s history – five years younger than the previous incumbent John Hopkins. Will Davis, the young Derbyshire seamer took his first five wicket haul, but the day belonged to Donald on the North Wales coast.

Chelsea eye move for "incredible" star

Chelsea have been named as a possible destination for Juventus midfielder Adrien Rabiot in the upcoming transfer window.

What’s the latest on Adrien Rabiot to Chelsea?

According to CaughtOffside, the Blues have been linked with the Frenchman as they begin their summer rebuild.

The 28-year-old is set to become a free agent at the end of the current campaign, and as per the report, a move to Stamford Bridge "could potentially happen".

The article also names Manu Kone and Khephren Thuram as other options, but for a club that has spent £585.5m in two windows and has Financial Fair Play regulations breathing down their necks, a move for either of these lucrative targets may be out of even Todd Boehly’s reach.

Therefore, Rabiot has been described as the most “realistic” and “more likely” to join the west London outfit.

Would Adrien Rabiot be a good signing for Chelsea?

The former Paris Saint-Germain ace is arguably enjoying the most productive and impressive season of his career so far.

The 36-cap international has registered 15 goal contributions in 43 appearances in all competitions this term and has been an imperative figure for a Juventus side that is currently second in Serie A and tussling with Sevilla in the Europa League semi-finals.

Adrien-Rabiot

He also started five of France’s seven World Cup fixtures as his nation painfully lost on penalties to Argentina in the final.

During the tournament, Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate praised his teammate's influence and said: “Talk to everyone. He is a key player in this competition. Adrien takes us a lot, in defence and attack.”

Konate’s comments about his attacking and defensive qualities are showcased by Rabiot’s excellent statistics.

The titan ranks in the top 2% in Europe’s top five leagues among his positional peers over the past year for non-penalty goals per 90, as well as the highest 19% for progressive carries per 90, according to FBref.

The £152k-per-week man has also acted as a formidable protector for the backline and massively outperforms current Chelsea midfielder Mateo Kovacic in these categories.

Rabiot has recorded 1.47 blocks, 1.54 clearances, and 1.6 aerials won per 90, whilst the Croatian has only averaged 0.68, 0.72, and 0.44 for the same metrics respectively.

Considering this and the Juventus star’s far superior potency in front of goal – scoring ten more goals this season than his midfield counterpart – he represents a far more accomplished and reliable option.

Gianluigi Buffon has also showered him in praise and said: "Rabiot is incredible, very strong. He has the physical strength of [Paul] Pogba – he is a proper wardrobe. He has [Arturo] Vidal's personality in the game and potentially [Claudio] Marchisio's dynamism and ability to integrate."

Furthermore, Kovacic is reportedly nearing his Chelsea departure to set up a clear pathway for the well-rounded and boundlessly talented Rabiot to begin his career in English football.

Pundit Fancies Liverpool To Seal £40m Deal For Man City Star

Frank McAvennie feels that Liverpool will complete a deal to bring in Man City midfielder Kalvin Phillips this summer, according to Football Insider.

What's the latest on Kalvin Phillips to Liverpool?

The midfielder has struggled for gametime this season, featuring just seven times in the Premier League for Pep Guardiola's outfit this campaign. This has been due to a combination of both a shoulder injury that ruled him out of action at the beginning of the campaign and a lack of fitness following the World Cup.

With the 27-year-old not playing frequently for City, it means that the player could perhaps be available on a deal when the summer transfer window opens its doors. Liverpool could provide the escape route for Phillips too, with the Reds eager to add a midfielder to their ranks in the close season.

They've already been linked with the midfielder previously via the Daily Star, with the club feeling that a deal could be done and the player seemingly keen to move over to Anfield. Klopp has already revealed that a deal for Jude Bellingham is pretty much dead in the water, with the Reds unable to find the financial power to seal a deal for the Dortmund star.

Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips.

Instead, they could turn to Phillips – and Frank McAvennie has told Football Insider that he feels a deal will be completed this summer.

"He will get Phillips for about £40/£50m. I think he is a good option for that kind of money because then you can buy other players," the former St Mirren man said of Jurgen Klopp. The pundit added that he feels the Man City man would be a suitable replacement for Jordan Henderson, who is now 32-years-old. "I love Henderson, he is a steady player, keeps everyone under control, but he is coming to the end of his career.

"They need players in there that are going to be buzzing about. I am not too sure if the young boys there are ready to do that yet. So I think Phillips, Thiago [Alcantara] and another midfielder would be wonderful."

Would Kalvin Phillips be a good Liverpool addition?

Phillips has proven in the past that he is more than capable of performing at Premier League level, with his showings for Leeds United helping him to break into the England setup. It led to him helping his international side to reach the Euro 2020 final and although his team were unsuccessful, losing to Italy, he ended up being crowned England's Player of the Year for 2020/21.

The midfielder was hailed as a "rolls-royce" of a player and "fantastic" during his showings for England by journalist Josh Bunting, particularly against Denmark. He said:

"Kalvin Phillips Rolls Royce performance, absolutely fantastic driving from deep and turning over the possesion. Played a couple of brilliant passes. He's stood out in this tournament from the opening game against Croatia. Top performance from him once again."

The 27-year-old then could be a welcome addition to Liverpool's team. Whilst he's only amounted to a rating of 6.15 during his Premier League appearances for Man City so far, when he was a regular at Leeds during his first top tier campaign he was handed a score of 7.01 by WhoScored. Having played at the required level for the last three seasons and having clearly been able to up his game since the jump from the Championship, there is no question he could be an asset for the Reds.
