Who owns every MLS club? David Beckham, Matthew McConaughey & everything you need to know about star-studded investors

Actors, athletes and other celebrities have flocked to MLS in recent years as soccer in the United States grows its reach

What do David Beckham, Matthew McConaughey and Ciara have in common? Aside from superfans around the world and bank accounts with far more digits than the average person, the celebrities are also MLS investors.

There's a growing number of celebrities putting their money behind the league, an indication that it is in a far healthier place than it once was.

GOAL takes a look at who owns every MLS club below.

  • Kevin C. Cox

    Atlanta United

One of the biggest commercial success stories of MLS expansion, Atlanta United have routinely led in attendance as co-inhabitants of Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

Their principal owner is Arthur Blank, who co-founded Home Depot and also owns the NFL's Atlanta Falcons.

    Austin FC

Austin FC were initially set to be villains as MLS planned to relocate the regionally beloved Columbus Crew to Texas, however an agreement was reached to keep the Crew in Ohio and create Austin FC as a separate expansion entity.

They are still in the early days of writing their MLS story, but the presence of actor Matthew McConaughey as a minority owner has raised their profile.

McConaughey goes to matches and is an active participant in the club from a marketing standpoint.

    Charlotte FC

Like Atlanta United, Charlotte FC's ownership model is all about carrying a stake in an entire sports ecosystem rather than a single team.

Charlotte FC's owner, David Tepper, also owns the Carolina Panthers, and the franchises currently play at the same venue (Bank of America Stadium).

  • Chicago Fire

The Chicago Fire have endured disastrous attendance figures and on-field play in recent times, having made the postseason just once over the past decade while struggling to get approval to build a stadium of their own.

So, Joe Mansueto still has a big job ahead of him after acquiring a majority stake in the Fire in 2018. The founder of financial services company Morningstar will continue to push for a better home than the aging Soldier Field, shared with the NFL's Chicago Bears, by either getting approval for a new venue (a path so far unsuccessful) or by renovating Soldier Field if the Bears move out.

South Zone retain BCL title after drawn game

South Zone took a lead of 138 runs, gaining seven first-innings points as opposed to East Zone’s five which effectively sealed the BCL title.Anamul Haque (70) began well in the second innings but when he fell as the fourth wicket in the 35th over, Soumya Sarkar and Mosaddek Hossain batted East Zone out and safeguarded their first-innings advantage. The pair scored centuries with Sarkar getting to his maiden first-class ton while Mosaddek’s 119 earned him the Man-of-the-Match award.East Zone were set an improbable target of 543 on the final day and the match petered out to a tame draw.Central Zone beat North Zone by 80 runs in a low-scoring game at Shere Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur.Central Zone had taken a two-run lead courtesy Mahmudullah’s 113 after they chose to bat. Seamer Mohammad Shahid and left-arm spinner Mosharraf Hossain picked up three wickets as well and North Zone were bowled out for 122 runs in 40.4 overs on the final day.

Milne out of Dunedin double; Malinga still missing for SL

Sri Lanka are playing a double-header in Dunedin and need victory in both games to have a chance of winning the series against New Zealand

The Preview by George Binoy22-Jan-2015Match factsFriday, January 23, 2015
Start time 1100 local (2200 GMT, previous day)Adam Milne is likely to return to New Zealand’s XI for the final game of the series•Getty ImagesBig PictureFrom Nelson at the top of New Zealand’s South Island, the teams have travelled to Dunedin on the south east coast, the southernmost venue to have hosted a men’s ODI and where Sri Lanka will take on Afghanistan in a World Cup game exactly a month from now. Sri Lanka are playing a double-header in the space of three days at University Oval and need victory in both games to have a chance of winning the seven-match series against New Zealand.Angelo Mathews’ team is trailing 1-2 after losing the fourth ODI by four wickets, a performance that exacerbated a budding trend in this series. For their runs in these limited-overs games, Sri Lanka have been familiarly dependent on the old guard of Tillakaratne Dilshan, Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene. The trio has scored 522 runs in nine innings while the rest of the Sri Lankans, in 19 innings, are well short of Jayawardene’s personal tally of 225.The hosts have a healthier distribution, with the vanguard of Kane Williamson and Brendon McCullum receiving appropriate back up from the rest of the batting order. But while the poles that hold up the frame of New Zealand’s Big Top are in place ahead of the World Cup, they are still sorting through which tent pegs will provide the firmest grounding. Can Grant Elliott produce results as a top-five batsman who is expected to bowl too? If not, does Tom Latham fit in to the XI? And fitness permitting, which of their many quicks are first choice to play along side Tim Southee?Form guide(last five completed matches, most recent first)

Sri Lanka LWLWW
In the spotlightIt’s early in the New Year but Angelo Mathews’ 2015 has not begun as productively as 2014 finished. He had a poor Test in Wellington and has 54 runs in three ODIs. This is his first tour of New Zealand and Sri Lanka will hope Mathews finds his touch because they play three World Cup group matches in this country and depend on him for a forceful finish to the innings.Ross Taylor’s home summer has not started well either. In four Test innings and three ODIs against Sri Lanka, he has four single-digit scores and hasn’t passed 40. Coming off an injury layoff, Taylor had a productive tour of the UAE, though, so New Zealand will look to him to find form quickly as one of their three pillars in the batting order.Team newsNew Zealand coach Mike Hesson ruled out Adam Milne from both the ODIs in Dunedin after the fast bowler picked up a side strain in the previous game in Nelson. Hesson said the injury was not serious and said Milne would return for the final match of the series. Kyle Mills is likely to return after recovering from a groin niggle, while Trent Boult could also make a comeback.New Zealand (probable) 1 Martin Guptill, 2 Brendon McCullum (capt), 3 Kane Williamson, 4 Ross Taylor, 5 Grant Elliot, 6 Corey Anderson, 7 Luke Ronchi (wk), 8 Daniel Vettori, 9 Tim Southee, 10 Mitchell McClenaghan, 11 Kyle Mills/Trent BoultLasith Malinga is unlikely to play a part in this ODI series because of fitness issues. He reportedly had some stiffness in his ankle and Sri Lanka are hoping that he will make a comeback in their World Cup warm-up match on February 9.Sri Lanka (probable) 1 Dimuth Karunaratne, 2 Tillakaratne Dilshan, 3 Kumar Sangakkara, 4 Mahela Jayawardene, 5 Angelo Mathews, 6 Lahiru Thirimanne, 7 Thisara Perera, 8 Jeevan Mendis, 9 Nuwan Kulasekara, 10 Sachithra Senanayake, 11 Rangana HerathPitch and conditionsThe forecast for Friday is sunny in Dunedin, with a high of 21 C. A great day to be at the cricket, then.Stats and trivia New Zealand have played only two matches at University Oval and won both, against Zimbabwe and Bangladesh. The average per wicket in four List A matches at this venue over the last two seasons is 29.89. The run rate in these games has been 5.44.Quotes”He bowls 150kmh so when he does get a bit of a twinge it’s not worth pushing through. He still needs [to work on his] skills so you can’t put someone away and hope their skills will be up to speed later.”

Fim do jejum, estreia de Ceni, Fred desencanta… Cruzeiro vence Santos

+ VEJA A TABELA DO CAMPEONATO BRASILEIRO

MÃO NO OUVIDO…

PREJUDICOU
O cartão vermelho interferiu extremamente no estilo de Sampaoli. O time alvinegro teve raros momentos no ataque – apenas com Sánchez no fim.

White 68 guides Australia A to win

Ben Cutting and Kane Richardson stifled South Africa A and shared seven wickets to skittle the visiting team out for 160 in Darwin before Australia A’s batsmen, led by a solid half-century by Cameron White, comfortably overhauled the target

ESPNcricinfo staff24-Jul-2014
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsBen Cutting and Kane Richardson stifled South Africa A and shared seven wickets to skittle the visiting team out for 160 in their quadrangular A-team one-day series match, before the Australia A batsmen, led by a solid half-century by Cameron White, comfortably overhauled the target.South Africa A made a solid start to their innings, adding 46 without loss in the first 10 overs after being put in to bat. They passed the 50-mark with consecutive boundaries in Cutting’s first over but the bowler hit back immediately with the wickets of opener Heino Kuhn and Rilee Rossouw off the next two deliveries. What followed was a period of intense scrutiny from Cutting, and Richardson from the other end, as South Africa A’s innings stalled. Only 11 runs came in the nine overs after the 11th and, in between, Richardson’s dual strike in the 17th over put even more pressure on South Africa A.South Africa A briefly recovered as Cutting and Richardson took a breather after their first spells, but with only five wickets remaining, lacked the resources to push at a faster rate. The two bowlers returned for their second spells from the 37th over onwards, putting the brakes on the scoring again. The last-wicket stand added 32 runs to lift South Africa A to 160, but it was not enough.Australia A made a slow start to the chase and were briefly troubled when they lost Peter Nevill and Cutting in the space of five balls, but White remained solid at one end. Australia A reached the target in the 46th over. They are placed two points behind India A on the table.
