We're more of a working-class team now – Hussey

Michael Hussey does not believe Australia’s “working class” cricketers can be considered the best one-day side in the world, despite moving within two ratings points of the top-ranked South Africans in the ICC standings. Having won eight of their last nine matches against Pakistan, Scotland and England, the Australians could reclaim the No. 1 ODI ranking with victories in the double-header at Trent Bridge and the series finale at Chester-le-Street; results that would seal an unprecedented 7-0 series sweep over Andrew Strauss’s men.Hussey, though, insists that only a strong showing at the Champions Trophy will determine whether this reconfigured and recalibrated Australian side is truly worthy of recognition as the world’s pre-eminent ODI force. Further obstacles lie ahead in the form of a seven-match one-day series in India, and home series against West Indies and Pakistan, prompting Hussey to reserve judgement on Australia’s place in the international pecking order.”We have got a lot of new faces around the squad but realistically I think we’ve got a lot of work to do before we can honestly claim that we’re the best one-day team in the world,” Hussey said. “It’s definitely a motivating factor for the team to try and be the best team in the world, but I don’t think that’s where we see ourselves at the moment. We’re building a new team, a new environment, a new culture and trying to take bits and pieces from the past regimes and trying to improve on those as well.”We’ll probably get a better idea after the Champions Trophy where we probably sit. Similarly, with where we sit in the Test match rankings, we had a pretty good idea after playing South Africa home and away and obviously playing England in England. We probably have a fair idea of where we sit in the Test match arena.”Australia and England began the current ODI series ranked third and fourth respectively on the ICC table, but four consecutive victories to the tourists have changed the landscape dramatically. Ricky Ponting’s side moved into a tie for second-place with India as of Sunday, while England plummeted to seventh behind Pakistan, Sri Lanka and New Zealand. Short of a dramatic turnaround in the final three matches in Nottingham and Durham, it is difficult to see England figuring at the Champions Trophy. For Australia, reclamation of the No. 1 ODI ranking will not erase the bitter memories of a tour that has witnessed a calamitous World Twenty20 campaign and an Ashes series defeat, but it will imbue a sense of confidence in the younger members of the squad. Hussey considers himself a generational bridge between those players and the that won the past three consecutive World Cups, and is hopeful Australia’s current side can continue the winning ways, if not the sheer dominance, of their forebears.”I think we’re more of a working class team now,” he said. “When I first started playing it was an unbelievable team to be involved with. There was so much confidence, there was so much presence about the team. Basically, you did expect to win every single game and win it well. We had so many match winners, that if Hayden didn’t come off, it’d be Gilchrist or it’d be Ponting, or McGrath would get the wickets. It was expected and it’s generally what happened.”Being part of this team, everyone has a specific job they’ve got to do and we all have to be doing our jobs if we’re going to win and win well. We don’t rely just on one player to make all the runs or to be the match-winner. We’ve all got to chip in and do our bit.”I actually get on well with the younger generation. They are different, but it’s good because I can learn a bit off them as well. I am available for anyone who wants to chat at any time. And it goes both ways. I like to chat to them about computer games and stuff – which I know absolutely know nothing about – which hopefully can help my kids.”Never before has an Australian side whitewashed a bilateral seven-game one-day international series, and Ponting is making strides to ensure complacency does not take hold in the final week of the tour. With the limited overs series sealed at Lord’s on Saturday, the Australian captain impressed upon his players the need to drive home their advantage and rediscover their ruthless edge ahead of the Champions Trophy.”Ricky’s been on our hammer already basically about trying to maintain our momentum,” Hussey said. “We’ve also identified some areas we need to improve. We want to finish this summer well here in England and it’s a really good lead-up to the Champions Trophy as well.”I’m sure [a whitewash of England] is a motivating thing for us but we’ve just got to worry about this game really. If we don’t win this one then that’s out the window. It’s been great to win this series but we want to keep the momentum going forward leading into the Champions Trophy. We still think we can improve a lot and we’re going to have to improve a lot more to be right up there in this Champions Trophy.”

Celtic predicted XI ahead of St Johnstone

Celtic will be aiming to advance into the final of the Scottish League Cup when they take on St Johnstone at Hampden Park this evening.

The Hoops are currently enjoying an eight-game unbeaten run under the tutelage of Ange Postecoglou and they’ll be hoping to continue their good form at the national stadium.

In-form centre-back Stephen Welsh declared himself fit after being substituted due to a knock in Scotland under-21s’ 2-0 defeat to Belgium in midweek, so he will be available for selection against the League Cup holders this weekend.

Postecoglou shouldn’t have any fresh fitness concerns to contend with, leaving him with some pleasant selection headaches ahead of kick-off.

With that in mind, here’s how Football FanCast expects the 56-year-old to line up his team against the Saints, with two changes from the side which started last time out…

In goal, former England number one Joe Hart is expected to keep his place between the sticks after an impressive start to life in Scotland, keeping both Scott Bain and Vasilios Barkas on the sidelines.

Ahead of the veteran shot-stopper will be a familiar back four which has put in some improved performances of late. Josip Juranovic, Welsh, Cameron Carter-Vickers and Stephen Ralston have started to gel as a defensive unit in recent weeks, although Celtic have conceded four goals in their last two outings, something that Postecoglou will surely be keen to address.

The midfield could see an experienced head make a rare appearance from the off, given the occasion. Summer signing James McCarthy has only started three times throughout 2021/22, but he could replace the £14,000-per-week Nir Bitton at the base of the engine room, providing a calming influence behind Callum McGregor and David Turnbull.

Attackers Jota and Kyogo Furuhashi have been in scintillating form this season, bagging a combined 19 goals already in all competitions. The devastating duo may be joined by 30-year-old James Forrest along the forward line, with his previous experience in semi-finals potentially pivotal in this intriguing clash.

Everton fans on Calvert-Lewin comments

Many Everton fans have been left gushing as some comments emerged from Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

The game at Goodison Park against West Ham United has been dedicated to the No Room For Racism campaign, from which the Merseyside club continues to urge its supporters to challenge and report discriminatory behaviour when and wherever they see it.

Ahead of the match against the Hammers in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon, Calvert-Lewin has been speaking about his own experience with racism, and lifted the lid on his ambition to see it stamped out of society for good: “It is my fervent hope that through a more inclusive and diverse world, racism will naturally filter out of society.”

It is a great message to put across from a great character, who as a Premier League star and England international will certainly have plenty of people looking up to him, and a lot of Blues were very appreciative of what he said.

Newcastle consider Favre appointment

An update has emerged on out-of-work manager Lucien Favre, regarding Newcastle’s interest in his services.

What’s the talk?

According to Daily Mail journalist Craig Hope, the ex-Borussia Dortmund manager is in the frame to replace Steve Bruce at Newcastle.

Hope has claimed that Bruce is set to be sacked by the new owners, PIF, and Favre is one name on a long list of potential successors to the ex-Aston Villa and Sunderland coach.

Delight

This key update from Hope will surely leave Newcastle fans feeling delighted as, on paper, it would be a shrewd appointment by the new owners. The 63-year-old has an impressive C.V with a history of achieving success and could be perfect for what the Magpies need at this moment in time.

To paraphrase a famous saying, Premier League super teams are not built in a day. It will take time for PIF to invest in the squad and get Newcastle to a point, if they ever do, where they can be competing at the highest level domestically and in Europe.

This is why Favre could be the ideal candidate for Newcastle as he has a history of performing well without having a mega-squad at his disposal straight away.

He achieved four straight top-eight Bundesliga finishes with Borussia Monchengladbach before finding himself at Ligue 1 side Nice – finishing third and eighth in his two years at the club.

Interestingly, he signed current Magpies dynamo Allan Saint-Maximin for Nice in 2017, with the winger producing five goals and nine assists under Favre’s management. This means that he could get the best out of the French winger at St. James’ Park, having worked with him previously.

Favre also showed that he can do well with top players, such as Jadon Sancho, Marco Reus and Erling Haaland at his disposal. In two full seasons at Borussia Dortmund, he led the German giants to second place behind Bayern Munich, averaging over two points per game in both years. This means that he has the experience and quality as a coach to work with teams in the top-ten bracket, whilst also being able to perform well at a title challenger like Dortmund.

Therefore, he could be the perfect man to handle Newcastle’s potential transition from a team battling against relegation to one competing for titles. This is why the fans should be delighted that PIF are looking at him to replace Bruce in the coming weeks.

Grady Diangana injury update emerges

West Bromwich Albion have been handed a significant boost regarding the fitness of Grady Diangana.

What’s the latest?

In recent comments cited by Birmingham Live, Valerien Ismael revealed that, after being left out of the Baggies squad for the 1-0 win over Birmingham City on Friday evening, the winger had suffered a slight hamstring strain.

However, the Frenchman went on to state that he expects the 23-year-old to be available for Albion’s trip to Swansea City on Wednesday evening.

Speaking about the condition of Diangana, Ismael said: “Grady has a hamstring issue, not too bad. It’s a small issue, we didn’t want to take any risks for this game. My expectation is that he will come back for the next game against Swansea.”

Ismael will be buzzing

While Diangana has not exactly been in the best form of his career this season, being yet to score a goal and providing just one assist over his 11 Championship appearances, the winger nevertheless proved during West Brom’s last promotion-winning campaign that he is a player who possesses the ability to fire the Baggies back to the Premier League.

Indeed, over his 30 Championship appearances in 2019/20, the £9m-rated man scored eight goals, registered six assists and created eight big chances for his teammates, as well as taking an average of 1.6 shots and making 1.4 key passes per game.

These returns saw the player who Lee Hendrie dubbed a “magnificent” talent earn a seasonal SofaScore match rating of 7.06, ranking the £36k-per-week winger as West Brom’s third-best performer in the league that season.

As such, Diangana is clearly a player with the ability to win any particular match in an instant, and, with the former England U21 international looking to be available for Wednesday’s clash with Swansea, Ismael will certainly be hoping for the winger to do so at the Liberty Stadium – an outcome that would leave both the 46-year-old manager and fans of the club buzzing.

Gloucestershire quarter-final fixture clash

Gloucestershire’s home quarter-final tie in the Friends Provident Trophy will have to be pushed back from its original date because the County Ground at Bristol won’t be available

Cricinfo staff18-May-2009Gloucestershire’s home quarter-final tie in the Friends Provident Trophy will have to be pushed back from its original date because the County Ground at Bristol won’t be available as the one-day international between England and West Indies takes place the following day.The quarter-finals are pencilled in for May 23 and Gloucestershire have already secured home advantage after their abandoned match against Sussex on Friday ensured they would top the table, but England and West Indies will already be in residence at Bristol for the ODI on May 24.”Our first choice would be to move the match so we can keep the game at Bristol,” a Gloucestershire spokeswoman told Cricinfo. “The semi-finals aren’t until July 5 so we have time to rearrange, but nothing has been confirmed yet and won’t be until the opposition are known.”The final round of qualifying matches takes place on May 20.

Tuanzebe open to permanent Villa move

Axel Tuanzebe is open to the idea of making his loan move from Manchester United to Aston Villa permanent, according to Birmingham Live.

The lowdown

In August, Tuanzebe his third loan move from Old Trafford to Villa Park.

He’s started three Premier League matches so far this season and may have kept his place for a fourth were he not ineligible to face his parent club last weekend.

Dean Smith has showered the defender with praise, calling him a ‘fantastic player’ with an ‘unbelievable attitude’. He even went as far as to say ‘there’s a future captain in there’.

Tuanzebe has just under two years left on his United contract and is valued at £7.2million by Transfermarkt.

The latest

A source close to the player has told the publication that Tuanzebe has ‘found his smile’ at Villa Park and is ‘loving football again’.

The 23-year-old ‘would be open to one day considering the West Midlands his home on a permanent basis’.

Smith’s recent shift to a back three has provided a ‘perfect pathway’ to the starting line-up for the Englishman.

The verdict

This move makes a great deal of sense for all parties, especially if the Villa boss intends to persist with that new shape.

Realistically, Tuanzebe is always going to be a little way down the pecking order at United, but if he shines on loan, the Red Devils can cash in.

The player himself will surely have forged a connection with the Villa faithful.

Everton fans slam Townsend vs Brighton

Some Everton fans have been left slamming the display of Andros Townsend in their away game at Brighton and Hove Albion on Saturday afternoon.

The new signing missed a good chance in the first half that he really should have tucked away when the score was still 0-0, before his fellow winger Demarai Gray showed him how to finish by slotting nicely under goalkeeper Robert Sanchez after a neat run into the box to give them a 1-0 lead at half-time.

Townsend was also guilty of losing out on a fair few of his individual battles throughout the match, and was unsuccessful with some of his dribbles and crosses, while he also lost possession of the ball on several occasions (Sofascore).

Nonetheless, it was not his greatest performance, and the former Crystal Palace man will certainly want to improve after the international break.

Haggerty: Massive opportunity for Scales

The Celtic Way journalist Tony Haggerty believes that Celtic target Liam Scales has got a massive opportunity to showcase his talent.

Football journalist at The Scotsman and Edinburgh News Barry Anderson reported on Twitter last week that a deal to take Scales from Shamrock Rovers to Celtic is pretty far down the line and a deal worth £500k should go through imminently.

Scales has featured 26 times for Shamrock Rovers in all competitions this season, scoring three goals and providing a further three assists. The 23-year-old offers versatility, operating as both a centre-back and left-midfielder on 12 occasions each this season, as well as playing left-back and defensive midfield.

And Haggerty believes it’s a massive opportunity for Scales if a deal is completely, exclusively telling Transfer Tavern: “If Celtic are his port of call from Irish football, then he is taking a huge step-up, he’s got a massive opportunity in life as well to go and be the player that a lot of people think he can be.”

If Scales does join Celtic then he would become their ninth summer signing, with Ange Postecoglou starting to build his own team at Celtic Park.

After defeat on the opening day of the Scottish Premiership season to Hearts, Celtic have responded with consecutive 6-0 victories against Dundee and St Mirren and will be looking to enter the Europa League group stages with victory over AZ Alkmaar, who they have a 2-0 lead against, heading into the second leg of the playoff round on Thursday evening.
