Pundit claims Phillips could leave Leeds

Kalvin Phillips has been included in Gareth Southgate’s 33-man provisional squad ahead of the Euros and former Leeds United midfielder, David Norris, believes that the 25-year old’s future could be away from Elland Road.

Phillips is an academy graduate at Leeds, something which makes playing for the club just that little bit more special given his already close ties with them, and if reports are to be believed influential figure Marcelo Bielsa is set to stay at Elland Road next season.

The midfielder has been in every England squad this season and despite a shoulder injury which was initially feared to be serious, Phillips looks set for a spot on the plane and his importance and influence has been more evident when not on the pitch as Leeds have failed to win seven out of the nine games that he has missed.

Since Bielsa was appointed as manager at Elland Road in 2018, Phillips has made 117 appearances for Leeds such is Bielsa’s trust in the midfielder, and the manager’s future could have an impact on what Phillips decides to do this summer according to Norris, who spoke exclusively to Football FanCast:

“He loves Kalvin and talks well of him. Phillips is obviously a big part of his thought process in terms of team selection. So, if Bielsa goes, then Kalvin, might think that now is the time to move on.

“So, that could change it if Bielsa goes, but ultimately, I think both of them will end up staying.”

Despite a lot of silence from both Bielsa and Leeds, there appears to be light at the end of the tunnel as the Argentine is set to sign a new contract which will keep him at the club heading into next season.

Leeds finished in the top half of the Premier League and will be looking to kick on next season and attempt to disrupt the top six spots and try to bring back European nights at Elland Road.

Fury in Somerset over Wisden comments

Critical comments about the county cricket system in England by the Editor of Wisden Cricketers’ Almanack have provoked an incandescent response from the Chief Executive of one of the leading counties.

Stephen Lamb05-Apr-2002Critical comments about the county cricket system in England by the Editor of Wisden Cricketers’ Almanack have provoked an incandescent response from the Chief Executive of one of the leading counties.Writing in the newly-published 2002 edition of the “Cricketers’ Bible”, Graeme Wright warned that county cricket is at risk of disintegration unless radical changes are made.”The county system survives on a confederacy of mediocrity,” he wrote. “Take out the centrally-contracted bowlers and the standard of county bowling is deplorably low.Wright suggests the possible replacement of county cricket with a city-based system, which he believes would revive flagging attendance. “County cricket drifts along in a backwater,” he wrote. “Cities are marketable commodities in a way that counties, states and provinces are not.”The Chief Executive of Somerset, who won last year’s Cheltenham & Gloucester Trophy and were runners-up in the CricInfo Championship, is incensed. After hearing Wright’s comments in an interview with BBC Breakfast News, Peter Anderson has written him an open letter, which is published on the Somerset website.Anderson said: “Wisden seems totally unaware of the changes first-class counties are making to the way in which they prepare their players, play their matches, identify and coach emerging young talent and publicise and popularise the game with the young in their areas.”It seems fashionable in this country to ignore rural communities as politically and economically unimportant. However, reducing the number of first-class counties and basing those left on city-based clubs would leave huge swathes of the country and its population without a cricket team to watch within reasonable travel distance.”Mr Anderson then calls on Somerset supporters who visit the club’s website to support him in his response. For only the second time in the Almanack’s history, there are no England players in the traditional list of “Five Cricketers of the Year”. Three Australians, Adam Gilchrist, Jason Gillespie and Damien Martyn, are included along with Zimbabwe’s Andy Flower and VVS Laxman of India.

West Ham make Oxlade-Chamberlain approach

According to a report by Football Insider, West Ham United and GSB have made an approach to sign Liverpool attacker Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain – with the club ultimately assessing his availability this summer.

The Lowdown: Oxlade-Chamberlain emerges as target?

Links to the Liverpool midfielder have emerged as fairly new, with the wider consensus being manager David Moyes’ top priorities are both a permanent deal for Jesse Lingard and a new striker.

However, ExWHUemployee did recently claim that Moyes will look to strengthen at left-back, centre-back and in central midfield once he has acquired a new forward in particular (Patreon).

The Latest: GSB make approach…

Now, a West Ham United source has told Football Insider that GSB could look at Oxlade-Chamberlain as an option to bolster their midfield options.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-rumours-and-gossip-two-electric-boogaloo-copy/” title=”West Ham updates” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

It is said that the club have made an approach to ultimately assess his availability whilst also making third party contact over the possibility of signing Oxlade-Chamberlain this summer.

The Anfield club, however, value him at around £22 million and West Ham will have to invest considerably if they wish to bring him to the London Stadium.

He comes as a possible alternative to Lingard with the Irons loanee attracting plenty of suitors after a stellar few months in Claret and Blue.

The Verdict: Avoid…

On a reported £120,000-per-week, if Oxlade-Chamberlain were to command a similar salary in east London, it would make him the highest paid player at West Ham (spotrac.com).

Blighted by a serious knee injury this season, the 27-year-old missed 20 matches for Liverpool over 2020/2021 (Transfermarkt) and the last thing West Ham need is an injury prone signing.

Reds boss Jurgen Klopp, speaking on Oxlade-Chamberlain at the end of last year, was adamant that the Englishman is still an ‘outstanding player’ despite his fitness issues (The Guardian).

However, with the £22m price tag and salary, we believe that he is simply not worth the price for West Ham.

Barisic signing was an Allen masterclass

Rangers’ decision to sign Borna Barisic from NK Osijek in the summer of 2018 certainly looks to have been a masterclass from Steven Gerrard and former sporting director Mark Allen, as the left-back’s value has skyrocketed since making the move to Ibrox.

The Croatian international was signed after impressing against Rangers in the Europa League qualifying stages and has gone on to become a regular during his time at Ibrox.

The defender has now made 109 appearances for the Light Blues, in which he has contributed a superb seven goals and 31 assists from left-back.

His performances in the Scottish Premiership this season have been phenomenal, as he has contributed one goal and five assists in 30 league appearances, which has seen him average a superb 7.35 rating.

This is enough to see him ranked as Gerrard’s fifth-best performer in the top-flight so far this season, with only Ryan Kent, Joe Aribo, Connor Goldson and James Tavernier rated higher, so it is clear to see just how important he has become for the Light Blues over the past few seasons.

His impressive performances on the pitch have been reflected in his market value according to Transfermarkt, which has significantly increased during his time in Scotland.

The 28-year-old’s current value of £4.95m is the highest it has ever been, and it also represents a 275% increase from his value at the point of his signing, when the website suggested he was valued at just £1.8m.

Barisic was linked with a move to Tottenham Hotspur last year and it was suggested then that the North London club would have to pay £22m if they wanted to sign him, so whilst Gerrard will be keen to keep him at Ibrox for the long term, he can be safe in the knowledge that the club will receive a significant profit should he depart.

Following those rumours, former Rangers midfielder Alex Rae was full of praise for Barisic, saying:

“He performs at good level week-in, week-out and has terrific quality in the final third of the park.”

[freshpress-quiz id=“593776”]

Therefore, Allen and Gerrard both deserve a lot of credit for bringing Barisic to Ibrox, as it has proven to be an excellent decision from both a footballing and a financial point of view.

And, in other news… Gerrard has a huge Rangers decision to make on “terrific” gem after rampant Old Firm display

Wolves in talks to sign Guedes

Wolves have opened negotiations with Valencia for Goncalo Guedes, according to Portuguese journalist Pedro Almeida.

An offer between €20-25 million will apparently be enough to tempt the La Liga side to part with the 24-year-old, despite him having an absolutely remarkable release clause in his current deal.

Nuno’s side look to have stolen a march on West Ham and Everton, also named by Almeida as interested parties.

Valencia could make loss on Guedes

Valencia paid £36million to make Guedes’ loan deal permanent in August 2018 and tied him down to a six-year deal (via BBC Sport).ÂThat contract included an eye-watering £270million release clause.

But it looks as if Los murcielagosÂare now entertaining realistic offers, with Guedes only able to contribute two La Liga goals this season and the financial impact of the pandemic hitting the club hard.

In all, he has been directly involved in 42 goals in 128 Valencia matches (20 goals, 22 assists).ÂHe’s also been capped 22 times at senior level for Portugal, having last been called up in September.

Transfer Tavern verdict

It’s worth noting just how much Valencia have struggled this season. Last year, they made it to the Champions League of Round 16, but there’s no prospect of European qualification this time around with Javi Gracia’s side languishing in 13th.

So Guedes shouldn’t be written off just because his own statistics are a little underwhelming – Cristiano Ronaldo is such a big fan of his compatriot he allegedly wanted him to replace Gareth Bale at Real Madrid.ÂIf Pedro Neto were to be prised away, Guedes could be an excellent replacement.

In other news, fans flocked to another transfer update on Monday.

Kane, Odegaard & Mahrez nominated for GIVEMESPORT Fans’ Premier League Player of the Month award

Following an unrelenting fixture pileup in February, the return of Champions League football and the beginning of the World Cup qualifiers gave Premier League clubs some extra breathing room in March.

But the decrease in the number of fixtures certainly didn’t quell the entertainment factor which makes the Premier League such a universally popular competition. Sometimes less is more.

We were treated to local derbies in Manchester and north London, witnessed Newcastle United stumble into perilous decline and learned that Jesse Lingard might actually be a reincarnation of Lionel Messi after all.

Elsewhere, Leicester City continued their march towards European football as they bid to banish the demons that saw them narrowly missed out on the top-four following a late-season slump in 2019/20, while Brighton & Hove Albion finally managed to translate fine performances into points on the board to give themselves some vital breathing room in the fight to avoid relegation.

A multitude of individuals were at the pinnacle of their game and driving these narratives, but who were the standout players during the month of March?

Well, here are six of the best players from the calendar month who have played themselves into contention for March’s iteration of GIVEMESPORT Fans’ Player of the Month award.

All stats courtesy of WhoScored.

The goalkeepers

Nominee: Dean Henderson

Both Dean Henderson and Edouard Mendy s managed to keep a 100% clean sheet records in March with three shutouts in as many games, but the former gets the nod over Chelsea’s stopper on two counts.

Manchester United’s emerging star recorded two more saves (8) than Mendy and managed to keep a rampant Manchester City at bay at the Etihad Stadium, a feat that no other goalkeeper has managed all season.

It was another month of tangible progress for Henderson as he bids to simultaneously wrestle United’s number one jersey away from David De Gea and convince Gareth Southgate of his England credentials ahead of the delayed Euro 2020 competition.

There’s also an honourable mention for Leeds United’s long-limbed praying mantis Illan Meslier, who made a league-high 16 saves in just three outings.

The defenders

Nominee: Cesar Azpilicueta

With Chelsea and Manchester United both boasting 100% clean sheet records in March, our nominee was always likely to come from one of those two camps.

The arrival of a new manager often brings players from the fringes of the squad and back into first-team contention. Cesar Azpilicueta was a notable victim of Frank Lampard’s preference towards youth, but now he’s a major beneficiary of Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea revolution in a table-turning change in fortunes.

The Blues are gathering pace at an ominous speed under the German, and Azpilicueta’s performances in an indomitable back line have underpinned much of their defensive prowess. Not only did the 31-year-old play a key role in helping Chelsea record three clean sheets in three games this month, he also completed 231 passes and five key passes to underline his playmaking expertise.

Elsewhere, it was another brilliant month for Luke Shaw who came agonisingly close to securing his second nomination on the bounce.

The England international did something that nobody else has managed to do this season by making Joao Cancelo look distinctly average during the Manchester derby, terrorising the Portuguese on the overlap of Marcus Rashford before scoring United’s killer second on the day.

The midfielders

Nominees: Martin Odegaard, Riyad Mahrez

There’s something intrinsically insatiable about left-footed wizards, and in the shape of Gareth Bale, Martin Odegaard and Riyad Mahrez we were treated to some delightful slices of genius from Premier League midfielders in March.

Bale was finally removed from the comfort of the substitutes bench and, from Crystal Palace’s perspective, turned his seemingly permanent pitch side smile into something rather more sinister by notching a brace during Spurs’ 4-1 win over the Eagles at the beginning of the month.

However, that marked the end of a flurry that started in February and his tepid display in the north London derby was juxtaposed by his Real Madrid teammate Martin Odegaard.

The Norwegian continued his captivating opening to life at Arsenal with a goal to cap off an excellent all-round performance. In three outings he racked up eight key passes in a fluid number ten role that appears key to facilitating the broader success of Mikel Arteta’s system.

Meanwhile, Mahrez continued to show that his almost iconic deft first-touch is just one of the myriad weapons in his armoury by scoring three goals in as many matches, including two sublime efforts against Southampton.

One of the nearly players of the Premier League, Leandro Trossard, finally managed to deliver some goal contributions for Brighton following a season of frustration for the Belgium international.

Trossard followed up a sumptuous 56th minute winner against Southampton with a darting, long-range strike and an assist to boot against Newcastle in the following game, and he only narrowly missed out on a nomination here.

The strikers

Nominees: Kelechi Iheanacho, Harry Kane

It was a productive month for Premier League strikers as four players managed to score three goals or more, but Leicester City star Kelechi Iheanacho and, to the surprise of absolutely nobody, Harry Kane are the nominees here.

Gabriel Jesus’ steady rise in form saw him find the net three times in three games during March, while Che Adams scored in three consecutive games to end a run of thirteen league outings without a goal.

Iheanacho, however, was the pick of the bunch. The Man City academy product is 25 this year and showed that he may have turned a significant corner in his development more than three and a half years after signing for the Foxes.

Amid Jamie Vardy’s uncharacteristic dry spell in front of goal, Iheanacho scored five goals in three games, including a hat-trick against Sheffield United, to help Brendan Rodgers’ side continue their march towards a top-four finish. Though it wasn’t factored into his nomination, it’s worth noting that he scored two and provided one in Leicester’s 3-1 win over Man United in the quarter-final of the FA Cup before the international break.

And what to say about Lord Kane that hasn’t already been said? Having scored three and assisted two in four league games in March, speculation over his future in north London has come to the fore once again.

Will he leave Spurs this summer? Will he win this award? The answers to those questions remain unsolved, but Kane scoring goals in the Premier League remains an eternal certainty.
