Ousmane Dembele would make United’s attack ridiculously dynamic

Manchester United currently look like one of the most potent attacking forces in England, having become the first team in Premier League history to win four consecutive games by three goals or more after their 3-0 demolition of Aston Villa.

Bruno Fernandes has been arguably the Premier League’s best player during this time, winning back to back Player of the Month awards, while Anthony Martial and Mason Greenwood have banged in eight goals between them in their last four league matches.

It’s hard to imagine the Red Devils’ attack getting even better, but that could soon be the case if one reported transfer comes to fruition.

Of course, one of the biggest transfer rumours of the past few months has been Jadon Sancho’s potential move to Old Trafford, but with United looking to pay no more than £50m for the Dortmund winger, that one reportedly may not get over the line.

The Athletic are now reporting that their attention may shift away from Sancho towards Barcelona’s Ousmane Dembele, and if they land the Frenchman their attack may become nigh on unstoppable.

It’s not often you find a player who can use both feet with equal effectiveness, but if United sign the 23-year-old they will have two players who are truly two-footed.

Indeed, the Barcelona winger has previously made headlines for saying that he’s left-footed, but shoots better with his right, while Greenwood is a natural lefty who is so comfortable with his supposed weaker foot that he actually takes penalties with his right.

If those two lined up in the same team on opposite wings, defenders across Europe would have a serious headache in trying to defend against them, as they would be able to attack from all angles, shooting, crossing and passing with either foot with equal effectiveness.

It’s not as if the dynamism of being two-footed is all Greenwood and Dembele have to offer either.

Greenwood has netting nine Premier League goals despite only being 18 years old, while the former Rennes winger was deemed to be worth £135.5m by Barcelona just three years ago.

Dembele and Greenwood lining up alongside either Martial or Marcus Rashford is truly a frightening prospect, and it’s hard to imagine how any defence would go about stopping them, especially when you consider the talents of Fernandes and Paul Pogba working in the midfield behind them.

Aston Villa’s midfield dilemma: Nakamba vs Luiz

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

Despite Aston Villa’s inconsistent start to the 2019/20 campaign which has seen the newly-promoted side secure just three wins from their first 12 league games, the competition for places in Dean Smith’s squad is likely to hold a long-term benefit that could well go on to yield much better results as the season goes on.

One area where the West Midlands side possess considerable depth is in central midfield, specifically in the defensive positions, with two summer signings causing Smith a serious headache as to who can offer the most to the team in their bid to retain the club’s top-flight status.

Having arrived from Manchester City in the summer transfer window for a reported £15m fee, Douglas Luiz proceeded to start three of Villa’s first four league matches, and the Brazilian has also displayed his goalscoring ability, netting twice with long-distance strikes against Bournemouth and Norwich City.

The midfielder’s arrival at Villa Park served as evidence to suggest he would be Smith’s first-choice holding midfielder, but another summer signing is making a case to be the club’s number one anchor. Marvelous Nakamba, signed from Club Brugges in an £11m deal, has started all of Villa’s last eight league matches, proving his importance to Smith’s side.

In the last three games against Manchester City, Liverpool and Wolves – three games that Villa have lost successively – the Villa boss has opted to play both Luiz and Nakamba, attempting to construct a defensively resolute system to counter the attacking pedigree that Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola’s sides possess.

Yet, in the process, Smith has sacrificed his own team’s cutting edge, having scored just two goals in the last three games compared to 15 in the previous nine. If the newly-promoted side are to extend their stay in the top-flight, it is vital a sole holding player is selected to play behind two box-to-box midfielders in front.

In Nakamba, Villa have a player whose defensive ability was certainly on show against Liverpool as he registered six tackles, but the Zimbabwean does not have the goalscoring ability that his Brazilian counterpart holds. His career return is just four goals, from 173 games.

With Luiz’s goals coming against Norwich City and Bournemouth – two teams who are likely to be in the bottom half at the end of the season – a case could be made for the former Manchester City man starting against less dangerous opponents, leaving Nakamba to take a starting berth against the top-six and more elite opposition.

The club’s summer transfer business has provided increased competition for places, and although the Nakamba and Luiz dilemma is likely to cause Smith a short-term headache, there can be no doubting that it has obvious advantages in terms of squad depth. But it’s now down to the Villa boss to find the formula to get the best out of both his defensive midfielders as his side look to secure survival.

Leicester can help add to Brendan Rodgers’ identity by landing Diego Llorente

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

Looks like Brendan Rodgers is really starting to put his foot down when it comes to making this ‘his team’.

He looks set to go all out when it comes to bringing in those who thinks can improve squad, and it seems as though he may have convinced the board to dig deep into the bank account with a rather large transfer fee being quoted.

What’s the story?

According to reports in The Mirror (Print edition, 6/11/19, page 51), the Foxes are lining up a club record £45m bid for Real Sociedad’s 26-year-old defender Diego Llorente.

The club’s current record stands at £40m which they spent on Youri Tielemans this past summer (via The Guardian).

Llorente, whilst predominantly a central defender, can also play as a defensive midfielder, with the Sociedad website describing his versatility as ‘a real asset’, whilst also praising his positioning and strength in the air.

Looking for the future?

We’ve discussed before that Leicester are dangerously low when it comes to centre-backs right now, so whilst he may offer versatility, it’s more than likely that he is going to be played at centre-back should he make the move to the King Power Stadium.

Plus, when you consider the numbers that Wilfred Ndidi is putting up this year, it was always going to be a hard job to dislodge him from that spot.

A move like this, as mentioned earlier, would give Rodgers a real chance to put his identity on the team, and show the footballing world that he is doing this with ‘his players’ rather than with the ones he inherited like Jamie Vardy, the aforementioned Ndidi, Kasper Schmeichel and others.

It’s well known that Rodgers likes his team to have an emphasis on passing the ball and keeping possession, and someone like Llorente will give his side a boost in that area.

Current centre-back Jonny Evans’ pass completion percentage this season stands at 86.7%, whereas Llorente’s stands at 87.6%. So whilst they are almost identical, the Spaniard does have a five-year age advantage on his Northern Irish counterpart, so this move would see the Foxes being able to keep up this style of play for years to come.

Crystal Palace: Fans react as Simon Jordan says he hasn’t watched Eagles under Steve Parish

Many Crystal Palace fans have responded to a video on talkSPORT where former chairman Simon Jordan reveals he has not seen the Eagles live since Steve Parish has been there.

Simon Jordan – regularly featured on talkSPORT – said that he “will never go to Selhurst Park while Steve Parish is there.”

The 52-year-old was Palace chairman for 10 years, before the club fell into administration in 2010, leaving Steve Parish and the CPFC 2010 consortium to pick up the pieces.

While Jordan was able to get Palace into the Premier League once while the club was under his tenure, Parish has been able to take the Eagles to another level. The club are now in their seventh back-t0-back season in the Premier League, and they also reached an FA Cup Final under him.

Jordan has rarely shied away from admitting that the two are hardly best of friends. He described Parish as “opportunist” on talkSPORT in 2017 for the way in which he took over the club, stating that “if certain people had left the club alone when I was in trouble, I would probably still have it now. And one of those people was Parish”.

TalkSPORT posted the latest video on Twitter of Jordan saying this weekend shall be the first time he has seen Palace live under Parish, to which many Palace fans responded with their opinions, and also to the fact that the tweet says “sold the club”.

Leeds can use Eddie Nketiah & Patrick Bamford by deploying this tactic

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Leeds have a problem with their strikers at the moment.

Patrick Bamford hasn’t scored in any of his previous nine league games, while it seems that Marcelo Bielsa isn’t fully sold on Eddie Nketiah’s abilities to fit into his system.

For the time being, the manager is continuing to persevere with Bamford, but there may be a way to get both men into the team.

Watch Leeds United Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

Bielsa’s desire

The manager revealed in his press conference on Thursday that he’s considering a way to get both Bamford and Nketiah in the same XI by playing one behind the other.

This is a tactic that has been hyped up, but nobody has yet given an explanation as to how this system would work, and which players would have to be dropped for this to happen.

After all, Bielsa has stated in the past that a lack of training time in between matches has meant he hasn’t been able to try out the pair together.

A viable tactic

This is a real conundrum to create a viable system that would allow both Bamford and Nketiah to play together.

Firstly, you have to look at where the two players’ strengths lie. Nketiah’s are in his finishing, and Bamford’s are in his work off the ball.

Therefore it would make sense for Bamford to be the one playing behind Nketiah.

However for that to happen someone else in the team must lose their spot, and it’s hard to say who that should be.

Why being the away goalkeeper at Leeds is the toughest job in football in the video below…

Mateusz Klich would be the prime candidate as he’s usually Leeds’ most advanced central midfielder, but he’s started every league game since Bielsa arrived so he’s clearly important to the system.

Phil Hay has previously pointed out that Leeds are trying to play through the middle more often this season.

Therefore, the solution may actually come in opting to move into a narrower formation by dropping one of his favourite players in the ever-present Jack Harrison, and this is how they could lineup when everyone is fit and available.

Pablo Hernandez could be utilised as a number 10, while Bamford plays as a second striker behind Nketiah.

The wing-backs would provide the width going forward as both Stuart Dallas and Ezgjan Alioski can play in the midfield as well as at the back, and the players would be used to playing in that role as Bielsa utilised wing-backs when he uses the 3-3-1-3 formation.

Of course, this tactic could be modified to a three at the back when Leeds come up against a team utilising two strikers as one of the midfielders could make way for Gaetano Berardi.

Either way, it might go a long way to finally resolving their problems in front of goal.

West Brom fans thrilled by Nathan Ferguson’s contract update

West Brom currently sit top of the Championship table going into this weekend’s fixtures and much of their success has been down to their manager Slaven Bilic.

Only a few players from last season remain amongst the regular starting line up with the Croatian electing to strengthen the squad during the summer.

But not all players were complete newcomers or part of a past Albion outfit as the likes of Nathan Ferguson and Kyle Edwards were promoted from within during pre-season.

The former has had quite the impact at the Hawthorns already this season, playing ten of their 11 matches in multiple positions.

Watch West Bromwich Albion Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

Amongst the youth ranks, the 19-year-old was primarily a central defender playing 31 games there per Transfermarkt’s recorded U23 matches, but he began the season at right-back, where he even picked up the Sky Sports Man of the Match award for his role in their opening day victory over Nottingham Forest.

He has since been used at left-back in Kieran Gibbs’ absence, but he has played well enough to keep the former Arsenal man out of the team upon his return.

There are now new developments suggesting that Ferguson is close to signing a new long-term contract in the west Midlands, which has delighted several members of the Baggies support.

One fan claimed the starlet deserved his contract as his breakthrough campaign has been ‘sensational,’ as another labelled it ‘good news.’

A further supporter hoped a massive release clause was included in the deal so that the defender wouldn’t leave on the cheap with one more describing Ferguson as a ‘top-class player.’
