Predicting England’s Euro 2020 starting XI

After the Euro 2020 Championships was pushed back until next year due to the impact and devastation of the COVID-19 pandemic, it began to feel as though forever would pass before getting to watch our beloved England National Team partake in another international tournament after the joy and heartache of the 2018 World Cup – which saw us reach the semi-finals of the competition for the first time in 28 years.

Many fans were looking towards this year’s Euro’s with great optimism – due to the recent ability of the England team as well as the abundance of young English talent coming through the ranks over recent years, giving many fans like myself a reason to hope again that the National Team will again one day bring football home.

Despite the competition being moved to next year – there are still plenty of positives to take from that. It ultimately gives Gareth Southgate more time to prepare and plan, and also gives plenty more youngster and England internationals to fight for a spot and prove themselves given they have another season to perform at their best ahead of Southgate’s final 23-man squad.

With all that being said, it would be interesting to try and take a stab at how Southgate might lineup in their countries first game of the Euro’s next season – and with that being said, this is my predicted starting XI for England’s first game of Euro 2020 in a favoured 4-3-3 formation…

GK – Dean Henderson

This season will be the 23-year-olds first full season at United since being loaned out to Sheffield United in 2018 for two seasons, which saw him get promoted with the Blades to the Premier League, eventually finishing in 9th place in their first season back.

Henderson kept 13 clean sheets in 36 league appearances last campaign, and next season it is likely that he will establish himself as United’s new No.1 after the poor form of Spanish shot-stopper David De Gea. It is likely that if Henderson plays first-team football regularly next season, he will be Southgate’s first choice for the Euro’s over Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.

RB – Trent Alexander-Arnold

The youngster has become one of the biggest talents in world football over recent years, becoming Liverpool’s first-choice right-back, and winning the Premier League Young Player of the Year Award last season.

The club’s title-winning campaign saw Alexander-Arnold register 13 assists and scored 4 goals at full-back, and the 21-year-old will likely be a shoo-in for Southgate at right-back for the tournament next year, with the player essentially helping to revolutionise the way full-backs operate in modern football.

CB – Joe Gomez

Soccer Football – Euro 2020 Qualifier – Group A – England v Montenegro – Wembley Stadium, London, Britain – November 14, 2019 England’s Joe Gomez REUTERS/David Klein

Another Liverpool defender in the mix – Joe Gomez has become one of the countries best defenders over the past few seasons. Along with Virgil van Dijk at the Reds, Gomez has evolved his game from full-back to a competent and reliant central defender, who possesses great speed and physicality.

Last season during the club’s title-winning campaign, the 23-year-old averaged 1.4 interceptions, 2.1 clearances, and 2.5 aerial duels won per game. The player has also become a great passer of the ball, something that Southgate has favoured in his choice of defenders over the past couple of years, averaging an 88% pass success rate – and will likely be one of the managers first-choice centre-backs next year.

CB – Harry Maguire

Since his world-record move to Manchester United last season, the defender has helped the clubs defensive record in the league immensely. The season before joining, the Red Devils conceded 54 goals in the league, but last season the club only conceded 36, garnering the third-best defence in the league.

His individual stats for the last campaign were also impressive – averaging 1 tackle, 1.9 interceptions, 4.1 clearances, and 4.6 aerial duels won per game. If he can carry this form into next season, there is no doubt that he will be Southgate’s other first-choice centre-back for England in their opening game.

LB – Ben Chilwell

The left-back recently moved to Chelsea this month, and will likely become the club’s first choice over Marco Alonso and Emerson. Last season saw the defender finish 5th in the league with Leicester City – and his stats boasted a fine run of form for the season.

The 23-year-old finished with 3 goals and 3 assists, as well as averaging 1.6 tackles, 1 interception, 2 clearances, and 2.1 aerial duels won per game – and has been one of the countries first choice options at left-back for some time now. His recent move to Chelsea will certainly help him progress further as a player, and will likely make him a guarantee at left-back for Southgate and his team.

CM – Declan Rice

Since making the switch from the Republic of Ireland to England, the 21-year-old has been capped once for the Three Lions in an impressive performance against the Czech Republic – and had a stellar season for the Hammers last time out.

Last season, Rice averaged 3.1 tackles, 2 interceptions, 1.3 clearances, and 1.4 aerial duels won per game from defensive midfield – all stats and aspects that would benefit England in that position, with them failing to find a proper defensive midfielder for some time now. Rice looks the right player to fill this void, and will likely be Southgate’s go-to in midfield.

CM – Jordan Henderson

Jordan Henderson lifting the Premier League trophy for Liverpool.

The 30-year-old has become one of Liverpool’s most important players over recent years since becoming the club’s captain – and last season lifted the Premier League trophy for the club, along with the Champions League the season before.

For England, it has often been the same case, with Henderson becoming a regular choice for Southgate’s squads during each international break. At Euro 2020 the midfielder will be 31 and will provide the squad with some much-needed experience in midfield as well as in the dressing room at big tournaments for the country, making him the managers second go too in deep midfield alongside Declan Rice.

CAM – Jack Grealish

The Aston Villa captain finally received his first England call up this month, a well-deserved accolade after an impressive season for the Villans in their return to the Premier League.

Last season saw Grealish finish the campaign with 8 goals and 6 assists – as well as creating the second most amount of chances in the Premier League, sitting behind only Kevin De Bruyne. Grealish could be the attacking midfielder with the creativity that England has needed for some time now, with many tournaments highlighting our lack of flair from attacking midfield. If Grealish can have another stellar campaign for Villa next season, it is almost certain that Southgate should choose him in attacking midfield for England.

RW – Jadon Sancho

Another player that is a certain shoo-in for the starting XI at Euro 2020 – Jadon Sancho has gone on to become one of the best players in the world last season in the Bundesliga, the 20-year-old scored 17 goals with 16 assists, an incredible record for a player so young – but clearly the stats showcase the talent and ability that Sancho possesses.

England only have a handful of top class wingers at their disposal, but from the right-hand side, there is no other player to start at right-wing for Southgate other than Jadon Sancho.

LW – Raheem Sterling

Raheem Sterling has been one of England’s best players for the past few seasons now – last season saw the winger produce one of his best goal-scoring seasons yet, with 20 goals and 1 assist in the Premier League for City, finishing as the club’s top goalscorer in the league. Sterling has proven himself as a world-class player, and there is no other person to start at left-wing for England come the Euro’s next year – and will be one of Southgate’s go-to players to rely on during the tournament.

ST – Harry Kane

Our final player to make the starting XI – it is no other than England captain Harry Kane. We can go over the stats, such as his 143 goals in 210 games Premier League appearances for Spurs, but we all know the ability and goalscoring prowess that he posseses – and will be the first name on Southgate’s teamsheet every time.

With Kane finishing off the England front three, there is no doubt in my mind that this starting XI has the capability to win the Euro’s next year – and if Southgate were to opt for anything close to this, then we should all be very excited for next summer.

Rangers fans drool over Joe Aribo’s display against Aberdeen

Rangers got their Scottish Premiership campaign off to the perfect start with a 1-0 win against Aberdeen on Saturday afternoon.

Ryan Kent’s strike just after the 20 minute mark proved to be the difference-maker, with Steven Gerrard’s side laying down an early marker at Pittodrie.

But whilst Kent was the match-winner, Joe Aribo had a barn-storming game in the middle of the park for the Gers. He had an incredible 97% pass accuracy, provided three key passes, completed four dribbles and even showed his defensive side of the game by making two tackles and one interception.

Are you a massive Rangers fan? Know everything about the club? Well do you know your Gary Stevens from your Michael Ball? This quiz will separate the loyal from the fake…

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

And after seeing his midfield masterclass, Rangers fans took to Twitter to hail the 24-year-old.

A couple of Rangers fans talked up his technical ability, with one supporter pointing to a moment in the game when Aberdeen simply couldn’t get him off the ball.

Having signed him from Charlton last summer, Aribo will no doubt be keen to kick on from a promising first season at Ibrox.

In 48 games across all competitions in the previous campaign, he managed an impressive nine goals and eight assists. And according Aberdeen on Saturday, he showed he could be a real force in the engine room for Gerrard’s side.

It may have just been the opening game, but Aribo showed signs of being a hugely important figure for the Gers.

Glasgow Rangers: Glenn Middleton ‘very frustrated’ at Ibrox

Scotland U21 coach Scott Gemmill has said that Glasgow Rangers’ Glenn Middleton is very frustrated with his current situation at Ibrox.

The 20-year-old has been called up for international duty despite not playing a single minute for the Gers so far this campaign. All in all, he has made 28 appearances for the 54-time Scottish champions, scoring five goals and providing five assists, but he did not play for them at all last season either.

Discussing the winger’s situation with the Gers, Gemmill explained:

“I had a meeting with Glenn on Thursday and I was so impressed with him because he’s having to deal with a lot. But I tell you I spoke to a young man who is more determined than ever, more resilient than ever and more motivated than ever to keep going.”

“He’s not where he wants to be right now, but I am very confident he is handling the situation in a mature way. He’s very frustrated, but only because he wants to play football.

“We have got a really good young player who we are all trying to help maximise his potential…The guy I was speaking to is more determined than ever. When you look at players’ attitude and professionalism and mentality, Glenn is a real leading example.”

It seems like Middleton is approaching a crossroads in his career right now. It seems quite obvious that he does not have a future at the club, and as such he should be looking for a departure away from the Gers.

Given he is an 11-time U21 international, there would surely not be a lack of suitors to sign him. It remains to be seen what the future holds for the former Norwich City man.

Profit Players: Celtic signing Stiliyan Petrov for £2 million was a bargain

This article forms part of our Profit Players feature series, which is where Football Transfer Tavern takes a look at how well a player has fared since being signed or sold, using statistical figures and statements from pundits to prove how good of a deal the club managed to achieve.

Back in 1999, Celtic managed to pick up central midfielder Stiliyan Petrov from CSKA Sofia for £2 million, per Soccerbase. He was definitely an unknown to the Hoops fanbase but he would leave the club a fan favourite,  whilst also making the Scottish side a lot of money.

The Bulgarian enjoyed a very successful career at the Hoops, featuring 288 times and scoring 64 goals, whilst also winning ten pieces of silverware including three Scottish Cups and Scottish League Cups and winning the league title four times, per thecelticwiki.

He clearly was a huge part of this success and this was recognised as he won the Scottish Premier League Young Player of the Year in 2001.

Petrov will also be remembered fondly as he was part of the squad that went on a great UEFA Cup run in the 2002/03 campaign. They managed to get all the way to the final of the competition before narrowly losing to FC Porto 3-2.

His performances at Celtic did not go unnoticed and Premier League side Aston Villa ended up signing the player from the Hoops for £6.5 million in 2006, per Soccerbase, meaning Celtic made £4.5 million on the Bulgarian.

His very successful career at Parkhead, combined with the large amount of profit the club made, highlights how much of a profit player Petrov was for the club. Bringing him was truly inspired business by John Barnes and Kenny Dalglish.

Hoops fans, did Petrov do better than most thought he would? Comment below!

Spurs could pull off masterstroke with Declan Rice deal

As Jose Mourinho looks forward to his first summer in charge at Tottenham, he will know that the north London side may require a lot of wheeling and dealing to get the squad in his own image.

The Lilywhites have endured a difficult campaign this season filled with injuries and off-the-pitch turbulence, and it’s no surprise that before football was postponed, they found themselves lying in eight place in the Premier League and seven points off the all-important top four.

With finances set to be tight due to the current climate, Mourinho will certainly be wary of potentially not getting all the signings he needs.

The Greatest Bargains in Premier League history – How much did they cost?

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

But according to 90min, Spurs are the latest club to be interested in West Ham midfielder Declan Rice. And to even sweeten a potential deal to bring him across London, the Lilywhites are willing to offer Eric Dier as some sort of a part- exchange deal to convince the Hammers to sell one of their prized assets.

If Spurs can bring Rice to the club by offering smaller amount of money and giving back Dier, then it would go down as a masterstroke from Daniel Levy.

Dier hasn’t enjoyed the greatest seasons either on-the-pitch or off it, featuring only 14 times in the Premier League and of course getting into an altercation with a section of the Spurs support after the FA Cup defeat to Norwich earlier this year.

Both he and Rice are in a similar mould in terms of their playing styles, with the duo equally capable of playing the holding midfield role as they are at filling in at centre-back. But to put it bluntly, the latter is quite simply a much better upgrade on what Spurs currently have to offer.

As per Whoscored, Rice averages an impressive three tackles and 2.1 interceptions per game, and has a pass accuracy of 86.2% in the Premier League this season. Compare that to Dier, who averages just 1.4 tackles and 0.8 interceptions per game, and has a pass accuracy of 77.7%.

The Hammers man comfortably betters his Spurs counterpart in the key categories for their position, and it’s why Levy could kill two birds with one stone this summer. By getting rid of Dier, they would be cutting their losses on a player who just isn’t good enough at the level the Lilywhites need to be at.

And in the same deal, they would be getting someone in return who is markedly better and would improve Mourinho’s team straight off the bat.

Meanwhile, Spurs fans elated by this transfer report.

Aston Villa: Gabby Agbonlahor claims Gary Neville was overrated

Former Aston Villa striker Gabby Agbonlahor has revealed the one player he played against who he felt was ‘overrated’.

Former Villa man Agbonlahor made 391 appearances in a Claret and Blue shirt before calling time on his playing career last March.

Having played a large part in the Midlands based club’s Premier League years and in the Championship, the Birmingham born striker came up against some of the best defenders to have played in English football.

Gary Neville, who played for Manchester United during the Red Devils’ dominant years, was one of those.

Now a pundit for Sky Sports, Neville made 598 appearances for United, winning the Premier League 12 times before retiring in 2011 and Agbonlahor has now revealed that he feels he was the most ‘overrated’ player he came up against.

Speaking on ThreeSixtyTV’s podcast, Villa icon Agbonlahor opened up on a number of topics before touching on his games against Neville.

“Played against? Overrated,” asked Gabby, speaking to host Fuad Cadani, before pausing.

“You know what? I’d say Gary Neville. Whenever I played against United, I always targeted his side of the pitch on purpose.

“Basically, because Rio was so good, I’d always run to Neville. You know what I mean? In that defence, Neville’s the one I’m going to pick on.

“He could never handle that stop and turn. He couldn’t handle it. Hopefully he sees this!”

Big comments from Agbonlahor given that Neville played for United during their most successful years, but the Villa man did seem to always perform well against some of the Premier League’s better teams. Indeed, he scored four goals and provided two assists against United in his career, whilst also netting five against their local rivals Manchester City (Transfermarkt).

How highly do you rate Gary Neville? Let us know in the comments section below…

Crystal Palace: Sam Woods – dubbed Joel Ward’s understudy – deserves a chance

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Towards the end of the first-half at Stamford Bridge last week, Crystal Palace’s one and only right-back in Joel Ward punched the turf in frustration as he realised he had suffered an injury.

Speaking about the incident, Roy Hodgson said: “He’s injured his groin. He felt a pain in his groin so it’s obviously some sort of strain in the groin. It’s obviously a massive blow because we don’t have other full-backs at the club other than Joel and Patrick and we can ill-afford to lose them.”

While Ward’s injury has exposed some awful summer work in the transfer market from Palace, the Eagles have been lucky in the respect that their only right-back has been present for every Premier League game so far.

However, there was one game Ward was absent for – the Carabao Cup tie against Colchester.

What did Hodgson do in that game? Well, with no other senior right-back to call upon, the former England manager picked academy prospect Sam Woods to start on the right of defence, and the youngster didn’t disappoint.

You may recall that a certain Aaron Wan-Bissaka was handed a chance after an injury to Ward, and while it would be far-fetched to say that Woods is the next one off the production line on the basis of one performance – he certainly did his chances no harm against Colchester.

At the time, we detailed that Woods had showed signs of becoming Ward’s understudy with an excellent performance, in which he almost scored a brilliant goal amid what was a confident showing down the right flank.

It remains to be seen just how long Ward will be absent for, although if the former Portsmouth man is missing for a while, Woods has shown what he can do and has also waited patiently for an opportunity such as this one to arise.

The 21-year-old was solid and commanding against Colchester, winning four aerial duels, and there was no evidence to suggest that he would let his teammates down – none whatsoever.

Who knows – if Woods does well on a regular basis, he might be the one making a £50m move to a top six side in a season or two.

Moise Kean has chance to salvage his Everton career with Roma move

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

Everton’s Moise Kean is subject to interest from Roma as the Italian side look to boost their numbers up top, according to Gazzetta Dello Sport (via Sport Witness).

What’s the story?

The report states that Roma are after a backup to their main striker Edin Dzeko. Manager Paulo Fonseca is believed to be seeking a striker to ease the pressure on the Bosnian as Roma sit sixth in the Serie A table.

Gazzetta Dello Sport report that the Italian giants will reignite their interest in Kean just months after they missed out on him to Everton in the summer.

It is also noted that Roma are looking for an initial loan deal for the 19-year-old with an option to buy stamped in the deal.

Makes sense for everyone

Kean has endured a torrid start to life in England and has seemingly been unable to fully convince Marco Silva he is ready for a regular starting berth.

In fact, given he was dropped from the squad against Southampton for disciplinary reasons, the Italian is proving to be more of a hindrance than a help at this stage.

On the pitch, as well, is where Kean is really struggling to justify his £27.5m price tag.

So far, the forward has barely even looked like scoring, averaging just one shot per game in the league. To compound the misery, he has actually averaged more unsuccessful touches per game with 2.1 than he has shots on goal.

However, Kean did show last season that he can be a great addition to a team. The youngster scored six Serie A goals in 14 games for Juventus as he burst onto the scene with the Italian champions.

Under the present circumstances, a move back to his homeland may in the player’s best interests: it would place him in an environment where he has thrived before and allow him to play his football without the pressure of a price-tag looming over him.

Kean is clearly struggling on the pitch in England and his failure to report to training on time suggests that something is quite right behind-the-scenes.

Silva should seriously consider letting him return to more familiar Italian surroundings for a few months on loan so he can reignite his career.

Rangers fans react to Premier League interest in Glen Kamara

When you sign a player for just £50k, and then have someone describe him as the “steal of the century”, you know clubs are going to start taking notice.

Glen Kamara’s arrival at Rangers for an absolute pittance should be seen as one of the shrewdest transfer deals in recent history, with the Finland international becoming a key part of Steve Gerrard’s side this season.

The 23-year-old has already made 15 appearances across all competitions, and it has reportedly led to some Premier League clubs to keep an eye on him.

According to The Daily Mail, Brighton and Crystal Palace are among a host of clubs “monitoring” the midfielder ahead of a potential swoop, with the likes of Burnley and Aston Villa also supposedly following him.

After hearing the transfer report, Rangers fans took to Twitter to voice their thoughts on the situation.

Many supporters of the Ibrox side insisted they should try to get in big money for the 5 foot 11 ace, with some quoting figures of upwards of £10m.

Other fans however didn’t feel Kamara is worth that much, with one fan in particular labelling him a “Championship player” and that they should “get rid”.
