National stars boost Pentangular Cup

This season’s Pentangular Cup will be boosted by the presence of most of Pakistan’s big names, with as many 15 Pakistan regulars representing their respective provincial sides.Defending champions Sind will once again be the team to beat, captained as they are by Shahid Afridi and boosted by the presence of Faisal Iqbal as his deputy and Danish Kaneria as his lead spinner. Sohail Khan, the fast-bowling find of the last domestic season on the fringes of the national team, will also be there, while Sarfraz Ahmed, Kamran Akmal’s national understudy, will keep wickets and provide lower-order stability.Fast bowler, Anwar Ali, who took five wickets in the Under-19 World Cup final against India in 2006, will be one of the many players to watch out for after his impressive show for the Pakistan Cricket Academy in Kenya and Zimbabwe. Ali, alongwith Sohail, will form a testing new-ball pairing for Sind, and both are in line for international places.Their main challenge is likely to come from Punjab who can rely on no less than 12 internationals in their 15-man squad. They will be led by Pakistan captain Shoaib Malik, while Mohammad Yousuf, Nasir Jamshed, Salman Butt, Kamran Akmal and Mohammad Hafeez add enviable depth to their batting. Though not as strong as Sind, their bowling will benefit from the inclusion of Wahab Riaz, Mohammad Khaleel, the upcoming paceman Mohammad Talha and Saeed Ajmal and Mansoor Amjad as spinners.Though Younis Khan is absent playing for South Australia, NWFP will still be able to call on Umar Gul and Yasir Hameed as captain and vice-captain respectively. Fast bowlers Shoaib Akhtar, Sohail Tanvir, and Rao Iftikhar will represent Federal Areas who were runners-up last season.Baluchistan found themselves at the bottom of the points table last season after losing all their matches, three of which were innings-defeats. They’ll be hoping for a change in fortunes this time under the captaincy of Misbah-ul-Haq, who is among a number of guest players recruited from other provinces to try and beef up a traditionally cricket-poor province. Kamran Hussein, Abdur Rauf and Mohammad Irshad – all three from Punjab – will ensure Baluchistan have a more than adequate pace attack.Sind and Federal Areas, who play the tournament opener on October 25, met in a closely fought game last season, when Federal Areas recorded a one-wicket win. Sweeping success

Plays of the day for Sri Lanka v India, 4th ODI, Colombo, August 27, 2008

Finally: Chaminda Vaas becomes the fourth bowler to reach 400 ODI wickets © AFP
Flavours of throttle
Different positions, same effort. With Kumar Sangakkara standing up to the stumps Gautam Gambhir didn’t walk down to the fast bowlers but shuffled around to try and create room. Off In successive balls he succeeded in cutting Chaminda Vaas but the bowler was backed up by brilliant fielding. First Gambhir walked across to outside off stump and chopped one to the left of gully, where Mahela Jayawardene dived and saved four. Next ball he cut the ball hard further away from Jayawardene but Tillakaratne Dilshan, at backward point, pulled off an acrobatic aerial fling to prevent runs. Soon after a frustrated Gambhir cut a short ball to Dilshan at backward point and was out.At long last …
Vaas’ search for his 400th one-day wicket had been put on hold by a left hamstring injury, a wicketless yet economic spell in game three, and Tuesday’s washout. Today he finally got there, and the noise at the Premadasa could have been heard round the island. With the first ball of his seventh over Vaas got Yuvraj Singh to edge one that went straight to short midwicket. As the stadium erupted into a tumultuous din, Vaas spread his arms, shut his eyes, and roared before his team-mates swamped him. Then he was lifted into the air. It was an endearing moment and a landmark thoroughly deserved by a Sri Lankan legend. Fittingly, Suresh Raina couldn’t score off the remaining five balls, and Vaas, that most economical of bowlers, finished with a maiden over. He became only the fourth bowler to reach the landmark.Third time’s a charm
Mahendra Singh Dhoni has altered his game to suit the needs of his team, especially since becoming captain, but in one over today, early into his innings, he tried to have a real crack at Thilan Thushara. He attempted to cut and drive the ball, once even sashaying forward, but could not time or place the ball where he wanted. Then he connected, and how. Thushara dropped fractionally short and Dhoni pressed back to slap the ball past short-cover before anyone could blink. That was it for pace, and Sri Lanka opted for spin from both ends.Fetch that
Raina welcomed the mandatory change of ball after 34 overs with a sweetly timed bended-knee six off Muttiah Muralitharan, no less. He cleared his front leg and slog-swept Murali over deep midwicket. It was a shot executed much the way Raina has been seen thumping his UP team-mate Piyush Chawla in the nets. After admiring his shot Raina walked halfway down the track, towards a fatigued Dhoni, and executed it again.A sweeping success
Plenty of Dhoni’s 71 runs came through paddle sweeps, some pulled off well and others scrambling off the edge of his bat as he cramped up in humid conditions. His fifty came up with a cute paddle for two, after which he hobbled off towards square leg. Watching Raina succeed with reverse-sweeping the spinners hard for singles, Dhoni took a cue and played it to perfection off Sanath Jayasuriya in the 39th over. It wasn’t ferociously done, like Raina, but rather placed effortlessly. The ball went straight to the boundary and Dhoni forced a gentle smile Raina’s way.Stuck in a moment
The way Dhoni was going, it needed something special to cut him off and Jayasuriya did just that. Dhoni made room and drilled a full and wide delivery towards cover, where at 39 years and 58 days, the wily old fox pulled off a spectacular diving catch to his left. It was a superb example of precision, reflexes and athleticism. That beauty sparked a stunning Indian collapse of six wickets for 26 runs.

West Ham insider says Moyes could sell Randolph

According to a report by West Ham United insider Claret & Hugh, the club will now try to sell goalkeeper Darren Randolph before the end of this summer transfer window.

The Lowdown: West Ham exodus?

While incoming transfer activity has been relatively quiet for David Moyes and co, there have been plenty of exits from east London already this summer.

Fabian Balbuena and Oladapo Afolayan were the first to leave West Ham permanently, with the club then also selling Felipe Anderson back to Lazio.

Meanwhile, the likes of Nathan Trott and Nathan Holland have departed on 2021/2022 loan deals away from Rush Green.

The Latest: West Ham set to green light Randolph exit…

As per Claret & Hugh, West Ham have now deemed another player surplus-to-requirements in back up keeper Randolph.

The signing of Alphonse Areola from Paris-Saint Germain has pushed the 34-year-old further down manager Moyes’ pecking order and GSB will now try to sell him this summer.

However, despite their eagerness to green light his exit, the Hammers admit that it may be hard to find new suitors for the Republic of Ireland international before August’s transfer window deadline.

The Verdict: Time to go…

Randolph, amassing 50 international caps for his country, is contracted until 2023, so West Ham still have some time to find a suitor if nobody comes knocking before the end of this month.

Over 444 career appearances to date, the shot stopper has kept 130 clean sheets across a plethora of different divisions whilst marking himself out as a reliable deputy for West Ham at times.

However, with the addition of Areola, we agree that there is just no place for him in Moyes’ squad anymore.

Celtic: Hoops suffer crushing blow in Sacha Boey pursuit

Rennes defender Sacha Boey has bizarrely walked away from negotiations with Celtic after previously being in advanced talks with the club [L’Equipe via The Scottish Sun].

The Lowdown: Celtic hunt for quality ahead of the 2021/22 Scottish Premiership season

Progressing towards the opening weekend of the Scottish Premiership season, newly appointed Bhoys manager Ange Postecoglou will be zoning in on recruiting in a number of key positions in order to strengthen squad depth.

In particular, right-back will be an area of interest to the Aussie. Facing a dearth of quality in what has been a problem position at Parkhead in recent years, Anthony Ralston is the only right-sided defender currently on the books with senior experience.

In spite of this, one man who will now not be joining the Scottish giants this summer is 20-year-old Boey, according to recent developments.

The Latest: Celtic move for Boey off due to bizarre reason

The 5ft 10in ace is said to have walked away from discussions with Celtic, with issues due to undesirable ‘foreign intermediaries’ causing the deal to completely ‘collapse’ [The Scottish Sun].

Previously, L’Equipe had claimed that Postecoglou’s men were in the advanced stages of negotiations with Boey.

However, any deal now looks to be off the table for Boey, whilst a number of French sides are said to be monitoring his situation closely.

The Verdict: Losing out on Boey will be a bitter blow for Celtic

Facing a race against time with competitive football already back underway for the Hoops, losing out on the full-back will come as a bitter blow to the Parkhead hierarchy.

In 2020/21, Boey gained regular first-team experience on loan at Dijon, recording a solitary assist in 24 appearances [Transfermarkt].

More importantly, his defensive attributes stood out despite his former club suffering relegation. Across the campaign, the youngster was able to record an impressive 2.3 tackles per game [WhoScored], which put him first in his squad (min. 2 games) and would also rank him first at Parkhead.

Having also been quoted with interest in Boey’s Rennes teammate Brandon Soppy alongside Sheffield United man George Baldock, Celtic now need to move on to other targets as quickly as possible.

Reporter expects Wilfried Zaha to remain at Crystal Palace

Wilfried Zaha is 75 per cent certain to still be a Crystal Palace player when the transfer window slams shut, according to Matt Woosnam.

The exciting winger wants to leave Palace after enjoying another fine campaign at Selhurst Park.

Zaha, who returned to the Eagles from Manchester United in 2014, is keen to challenge himself in European football and has also asked to depart in the summer of 2019 and 2020.

Although Palace chairman Steve Parish has confirmed Zaha will be allowed to leave if an offer meets their demands this summer, The Athletic reporter Woosnam has revealed no clubs have firmed up their interest by submitting an official bid.

The Ivory Coast international scored 11 goals in 31 appearances last term and has attracted interest from the likes of Everton and Arsenal since heading back to Selhurst Park.

However, Woosnam is expecting new boss Patrick Vieira to have Zaha among his options during his first season at the helm.

He told The Transfer Tavern: “Right now, I would say there is 75 per cent chance of him staying.

“I think it’s very unlikely that he’ll leave this summer. I don’t see why Palace would let him go.

“In a summer where so many clubs are very heavily restricted with their finances, I think it would take quite a sizeable bid for him to depart.”

Fulham dealt Antonee Robinson transfer blow

Fulham have been dealt a further blow in their bid to keep Antonee Robinson at Craven Cottage this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by Football Insider, who claim that Wolverhampton Wanderers are plotting a move for the 23-year-old defender in the summer transfer window, with the Cottagers thought to be demanding a fee in the region of £10m in order to part with the left-back.

News of Wolves’ interest comes following an earlier report by the Daily Mail that Manchester City, as well as a number of other Premier League sides, are considering a move for the USA international ahead of next season.

Silva will be gutted

Having only joined Fulham from Wigan Athletic in what was a £1.9m deal last summer, the fact that Robinson looks set to leave west London after just one highly impressive season is sure to have left Marco Silva gutted.

Indeed, over his 28 league appearances for Fulham last term, the £6.3m-rated man helped his side keep four clean sheets, in addition to making an average of 1.3 interceptions, 1.6 tackles, 1.9 clearances and winning five duels per game.

The 23-year-old also chipped in for his side going forwards, creating four big chances and making an average of 1.1 key passes in each fixture.

These returns saw the left-back Scott Parker dubbed a “quality” talent earn an average SofaScore match rating of 6.89, ranking him as the Cottagers’ 12th-best player in the top flight of English football.

As such, considering the amount of potential Robinson appears to possess, if Silva were to lose his services this summer, it would not only damage the club’s chances of going on to secure an immediate return to the Premier League next season, but also see them lose a player who could well have been their first-choice left-back for many years to come.

However, with both Manchester City and Wolves being able to afford the American’s £10m asking price, it would very much seem as if Robinson could be on his way out of west London in the not so distant future.
