The Chalkboard: Tottenham must ditch rotation policy and make Rose first-choice

[ad_pod ]

Mauricio Pochettino regularly employs rotation at Tottenham Hotspur.

The Argentine continually swaps his full-backs around, with Ben Davies and Danny Rose at left-back and Kieran Trippier and Serge Aurier at right-back, but with the season approaching a crunch period, he may have to rethink his priorities.

On the chalkboard

Spurs’ full-backs have all played over 10 games in all competitions for the club thus far this season.

Aurier is perhaps the least trusted under Pochettino, playing 14 times, with Kieran Trippier making 26 appearances. Davies, too, has 26 games under his belt, while Rose has played 19 times.

But the latter has excelled in recent outings, particularly against Watford, laying on a key assist.

Former Wigan & Fulham man, Jimmy Bullard recently showed that he’s still got it! Check out the video below…

The last two games in which he has been rested, however, came against Wolves and Manchester United. Spurs lost both.

Pochettino’s men are third in the Premier League and remain in the title race – they are just five points behind leaders Liverpool.

Playing Rose continually between now and the end of the season makes sense, then, provided that he does not pick up any injuries.

Better than Davies

Davies, quite simply, is not really good enough for Tottenham.

The Wales international has played in five of the club’s six Premier League defeats thus far this season – only missing the loss to Liverpool.

He has not scored a goal nor provided an assist in the league, compared to Rose’s three assists.

The England international is also better going forward, routinely looking to cross the halfway line and affect the game in the final third.

Pochettino should drop his 25-year-old teammate permanently, install Rose as his first-choice left-back and reap the rewards.

Spurs, quite simply, can’t afford to fall victim to more Davies-related defeats as they look to chase down City and Jurgen Klopp’s men.

Tottenham fans on Twitter call for England quintuplet to pull out

The problem with being a really good team is that your players are all international stars. That’s exactly the issue that The Lilywhites have as today the England squad was announced and five of the 28-man squad named for games against USA and Croatia are Spurs lads.

Harry Kane, Harry Winks, Dele Alli, Eric Dier and Kieran Trippier will be travelling to St George’s Park to train with Gareth Southgate’s team ahead of the USA friendly and the crucial UEFA Nations League match against Croatia. The two games are matches that interest Tottenham fans very little and as a result of that, and the on-going injury crisis at the club, the fans have been urging their five England stars to drop out of the squad.

In truth, it’s very unlikely that any of their stars will pull out of the squad and to the players, representing England will be one of the biggest honours they can have. That doesn’t mean that the fans aren’t happy, though, and seeing as Dier has recently returned from injury and Alli was injured with England last time out, the fans will be holding their breath as they pray the five Lilywhites return to the club unharmed.

You can read The Lilywhites’ verdict on their England internationals here:

Tottenham fans everywhere are determined to see their internationals get some sort of break and will hope that their stars are at least rested for one of the two games.

Addition of Oleksandr Zinchenko would round off great summer at Rangers

Rangers supporters have been making a lot of noise in the Transfer Tavern in recent times after seeing their side move to within 180 minutes of the Europa League group stages courtesy of a 3-1 aggregate victory over Maribor.

Steven Gerrard’s men had made serene progress through the qualifiers for Europe’s secondary competition to set up a meeting with the Slovenian outfit in the third round, beating them 3-1 at Ibrox last week to seize control of the tie. And the Gers got the job done on Thursday in drawing 0-0 in Slovenia, thus earning them a spot in the play-off round where they will face Russian side Ufa next week.

As such, there are many delighted Light Blues fans up and down the country at present, although some feel that further reinforcements are still needed at Ibrox between now and the close of the window on August 31, despite seeing 11 players move to the club this summer.

And the addition of the hugely versatile Oleksandr Zinchenko, valued at £13.5 million by Transfermarkt, would certainly round off an excellent summer at the Scottish giants.

Ultimately, as aforementioned, Gerrard has been extremely busy since taking over at Rangers in bringing 11 players to Ibrox during the transfer window, be it experienced faces in Allan McGregor and Scott Arfield, or indeed exciting young talent in the form of Ryan Kent and Ovie Ejaria.

And while all 11 will significantly bolster several areas of the squad, there are still some departments that could do with slightly more depth ahead of the remainder of the season, a season Rangers fans hope their side will make inroads both domestically and in Europe.

And given the immense versatility possessed by Manchester City’s Zinchenko, Gerrard would be able to improve many areas of the squad in just a single signing.

The 21-year-old made the move to the Etihad Stadium back in 2016 but has since managed just 14 senior appearances for the Premier League champions, some of which coming last year as he occasionally filled in at left back for Pep Guardiola’s men given the early-season injury to Benjamin Mendy.

Significantly, left back isn’t the only area on the pitch in which the Ukraine international can play, with the 21-year-old sensation also hugely adept in the middle of the park, and indeed further forward down both flanks, having turned out in a variety of different positions during his time at City, Ufa, and PSV Eindhoven.

Thus, not only would Zinchenko provide competition for Borna Barisic in the left back ranks, which is significant given Lee Wallace could be on his way out of the club, but the youngster would also ask questions of those in most areas of the midfield – Gerrard’s options would be endless.

And with the 21-year-old turning down a permanent move to Wolves earlier this month, a loan move could well be in the offing for the midfielder, which is why Rangers must seek to get a deal done in a bid to round off an excellent summer of business.

Arsenal fans upset with Mesut Ozil after Watford defeat

Arsenal’s seven game unbeaten run came to a shuddering end on Saturday evening, losing in injury time to Watford at Vicarage Road.

It seemed the Gunners had managed to put early season jitters behind them, winning every match since being thumped 4-0 by Liverpool at Anfield. However, a trip to in-form Watford again raised questions about Arsene Wenger and his squad.

It was all going to plan when Per Mertesacker opened the scoring, but a Troy Deeney penalty and Tom Cleverley winner at the death devastated Arsenal and their fans.

It was the kind of capitulation that Arsenal supporters have seen many times before and many are losing patience not just with Arsene Wenger but with under performing first team stars.

Mesut Ozil is one of the players coming under the most severe criticism. He came off the bench on the hour mark for the injured Danny Welbeck and didn’t show much at all, even missing a golden opportunity that would have put the game beyond Watford.

Fans took to Twitter to criticise his performance…

Three reasons West Ham United will get back to winning ways vs. Hull City

West Ham United will be looking to end a run of three straight Premier League defeats when they face Hull City at the KCOM Stadium on Saturday.

The Irons are without a win since their 3-1 success against Southampton at St Mary’s at the start of February, and they picked up just two points from their last five league matches to leave them in 13th position in the table.

The previous three losses have come against Chelsea, Bournemouth and Leicester City, and are results that have put Slaven Bilic’s future as manager into further doubt.

A decision will be made on his future at the end of the season, but The Sun suggests that the Croatian needs to secure a top half finish to save his job – he will be hopeful that his side start the run-in by picking up all three points against the third-from-bottom Tigers this weekend.

Here are THREE reasons the Hammers will get back to winning ways in Yorkshire…

They’re playing for their manager’s future

The Hammers players will have seen all of the speculation surrounding Slaven Bilic’s future in the press this week following a run of bad results, and they will know that they need to deliver for their manager when they make the trip to Yorkshire this weekend.

The side has let the Croatian down with some disappointing performances this season but having continued to show faith in the majority of his first team players, they must start paying him back.

They aren’t at home

For some sides travelling away from home can be a bit of a nightmare, but it is probably where the Irons players would prefer to be right now.

The side has struggled to adapt to the London Stadium and the performances and the results on the pitch have shown that.

There is far less pressure on their travels, and it means they can play with a little more freedom when they face Hull this weekend.

They have impressed on the road

While they have struggled at home, Slaven Bilic’s side’s last Premier League win was an impressive 3-1 success against Southampton at St Mary’s at the start of February, and they also won by the same scoreline at Middlesbrough a fortnight earlier.

Their record on the road may not be perfect, though they have shown in 2017 that their better performances have come on their travels, and Bilic will be hoping for another one when they come up against a relegation battler on Saturday.

Kayal: Celtic lynchpin will be preparing himself to beat mouthy Rangers ace

Former Celtic midfielder Beram Kayal believes his ex-team mate Scott Brown won’t be ruffled by the comments made by Rangers midfielder Joey Barton.

Speaking to Talksport, Barton described himself as a much better player than Brown and said the Scotland and Celtic captain was not in his league. But Kayal believes Brown has proved many critics wrong before and that the 30-year-old will do all of his talking on the pitch.

During an interview with the Daily Record, the Brighton central midfielder said:”People were always going to talk about Broonie and Barton and it’s going to be a really great time in Scottish football hearing it all until the first Old Firm derby is played.

“Scott will be ready for that and preparing himself just now to beat Rangers, to beat Barton and to show his qualities and what a great player he is.”

Kayal believes Brown’s experience in top European competition, and the fact he is captain of his country means he has nothing to prove. The Israeli international also said Brown has endured criticism in the past but it has only proved to fire him up and push him on to become a better player.

“Broonie has a lot of experience and has proved himself at every level he has played,” he said. “He is the captain of Celtic and the captain of his country. He has played in the group stages and knockout stages of the Champions League and has won many trophies with Celtic. But things like that obviously do fire you up a little bit. It’s happened before and it will again this time I’m sure.”

Barton and Brown will no doubt go head-to-head when they face each other in the Old Firm derbies next season.

Does Sarina Wiegman want historic coaching role in men’s football? Lionesses boss responds to future question amid talk of succeeding England manager Gareth Southgate

Sarina Wiegman says it is “a matter of time” before a female coach takes charge of a men’s team in England, but she is not ready to make history yet.

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

The highly-regarded Dutch tactician has enjoyed considerable success in charge of her homeland and the England women’s team – leading the Lionesses to Euro 2022 glory and the final of the 2023 World Cup. It has been suggested that she could be lined up to succeed Gareth Southgate as leader of the Three Lions when that role becomes available again.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

No woman has filled a permanent role as coach of a professional men’s team in English football – with Hannah Dingley getting as close as anybody when she became caretaker boss at Forest Green Rovers in July – but the expectation is that the glass ceiling will be shattered at some point in the near future.

  • WHAT THEY SAID

Wiegman has said of knocking down those barriers, and potentially being the one to do so: “In football, it's still the question of can a female coach a male team? I think in every sector females are in higher positions, so that's a little bit strange [it isn't in football]. I think a female can coach a men's team. My thoughts are not there. I am just really happy in the role I work in now and I am really enjoying it. And, as you say, sometimes I think when I see it, it is so personal, also with men in the men's game. I think, how much fun is that? We know Corinne Diacre coached a men's team in France and more females also in Italy coached men. I think it is a matter of time and I think when first one happens it will be really big – but I think then more will follow. When I was a little kid I was not allowed to play football as a girl, but now everyone says, 'Oh why not?' Hopefully in 20 years we say, 'Why did we think females couldn't coach males?' Hopefully that will change quickly.”

    WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

Emma Hayes is another to have been mooted as a potential history-maker in the men’s game, but the legendary leader of Chelsea’s successful women’s team is being lined up to take charge of the USWNT following their disastrous showing at the 2023 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

De Jong, Barella, Bellingham: Midfielders Liverpool could sign in this transfer window

It's going to be an interesting week!

Now that Jurgen Klopp has stated that Liverpool need a midfielder before the transfer window closes, his scouting department will have provided a list of targets who fit the profile of age, suitability to the playing style, and potential availability.

GOAL have cast our eye across some midfielders, and their numbers, who Liverpool could sign before next Thursday.

Now that Manchester United have bought Casemiro and continue to pursue Antony, and Chelsea seem set to go deep for Anthony Gordon, a move for de Jong suddenly doesn't as far fetched as it did last week. An expert passer, who is brilliant at driving the ball forward and excellent at winning it back – Xavi has even deployed him as a centre-back in recent weeks because of this ability.

It is believed a fee of around £72 million could secure a player Barcelona are happy to let go to find their curious rebuild. Liverpool have a good relationship with the club and can offer the Champions League football he craves.

Now this is probably a transfer saga for next summer, but there is always a chance that Liverpool could pull the trigger this season. He was recently named in 10-man shortlist for the 2022 Kopa Trophy, the best player under the age of 21 and in March was named NXGN's player of the year.

Bellingham has regularly performed in the big games. When Manchester City visited the Signal Indua Park in 2021, he showed what he was made of with a wonderfully taken goal to put Dortmund in the lead, and he showed his ability to be a leader during his post-match interview after Dortmund lost 4-2 to Rangers. He spoke like a player far beyond his years, and showed he is not scared of letting people know how he feels.

The Croatian international is the type of midfielder that would fit the profile on Merseyside, known for his passing, tackling, intelligent running and stamina. He can play at the base of midfield as well as box-to-box and his versatility could be key.

Last term he was named as Serie A midfielder of the season. Brozovic was close to leaving Inter in 2018 before manager at the time Luciano Spalletti chose to play him deeper in a match vs Napoli, a role in which he excelled. Since then he has been a mainstay in the Inter squad, and has performed consistently at an extremely high level.
