Aston Villa: Fans react to Anguissa interest

Aston Villa, Arsenal and Everton are all interested in signing Fulham midfielder Andre-Frank Anguissa this summer.

And, as to be expected, Villa’s interest has had a lot of supporters talking on social media.

According to a report from the Daily Mail, the Cottagers are expected to sell Anguissa after Scott Parker’s sides’ relegation from the Premier League was confirmed on Monday.

Villa are thought to be monitoring developments regarding the 25-year-old and are reportedly better placed than most clubs financially heading into the transfer window.

Fulham would want around £20m for the Cameroon international, who has made 60 appearances for his current employers in all competitions.

That’s £2.25m cheaper than his current Transfermarkt valuation, with Anguissa thought to be on £70,000-a-week at Craven Cottage.

Villa fans react

@villareport shared the club’s interest in Anguissa on Twitter on Tuesday afternoon.

These Villa fans were delighted at the links, with one describing the midfielder as ‘composed’.

Gerrard should axe Ianis Hagi for Old Firm

Rangers take on their Old Firm rivals at Ibrox on Sunday and Steven Gerrard should axe Ianis Hagi for the game, as the Romania international has been far from his best in recent weeks.

Although the 22-year-old has enjoyed a solid campaign overall, contributing six goals and nine assists in 29 Premiership appearances, resulting in a 6.93 average WhoScored rating, his recent performances have been nowhere near that level.

Hagi’s last goal for Rangers came in the 3-0 win against St Mirren in early March, and he has failed to contribute a goal or assist in the league since then, whilst he also struggled in the cup defeat against St Johnstone last time out before his 68th-minute withdrawal.

Indeed, as per WhoScored ratings, he hasn’t exceeded a 7/10 since the aforementioned St Mirren clash, even registering a lowly 5.95 in the recent win over Hibernian.

He is also competing with Joe Aribo on the right wing, with the Nigeria international having shown that he is capable of playing there or in central midfield at a high level this season, as his average WhoScored rating of 7.40/10 in the Premiership ranks him as the joint-second best player in Gerrard’s squad so far this campaign.

The former Charlton Athletic man was also instrumental in Rangers’ most recent win against Celtic in the Scottish Cup, as he embarrassed Diego Laxalt down the right-hand side before sending in a dangerous cross for Jonjoe Kenny to turn into his own net, so it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him start out wide again at Ibrox on Sunday.

Hagi, meanwhile, has regularly been left on the bench against the Hoops in the past, making just two appearances against them in his career thus far, in which he has failed to contribute a goal or an assist, so perhaps Gerrard feels that the physicality of the fixture doesn’t suit the former Genk man.

[freshpress-quiz id=“593776”]

Although the manager dubbed the 22-year-old an “outstanding talent” last season after his starring performance against Braga at Ibrox, it seems as if he doesn’t trust him to be as impressive in Old Firm derbies. Given that Hagi has been pretty poor in recent weeks, Gerrard should axe him from his starting line-up on Sunday.

O Grêmio tentava transpor a marcação do Sport.

E coube a Diego Souza abrir o placar.

Ollie Watkins to Liverpool talk dismissed

Dean Windass has exclusively told The Transfer Tavern that he expects Liverpool to go after a “bigger name” than Ollie Watkins.

Following his impressive first campaign in the Premier League, recent reports believe that the Reds are keen on bringing the former Brentford man to Anfield this summer to bolster their misfiring attack, with Jurgen Klopp describing him as “undefendable” following his team’s 7-2 defeat at Villa Park earlier in the campaign.

Watkins, who is Villa’s only outfield ever-present player this season, is the club’s top scorer having notched 12 goals in his 30 Premier League appearances.

Seven of those goals have come against sides in the traditional top-six, four of which were against Liverpool, including a incredible first-half hat-trick in the 7-2 mauling over the Reds back in October.

Despite his form, Windass has raised concerns over Watkins’ lack of Premier League experience, and doesn’t think Liverpool to pursue a deal for the Villa frontman.

He told The Transfer Tavern:

“I can’t see it happening. He’s done great, he’s done absolutely fantastic.

“First season in the Premier League, you’re a young boy, you’re going to play every week. Is he going to play at Liverpool?

“I’m not saying he’s a bad player, because he’s done unbelievable since he left Brentford. The proof will be in the pudding, can he do it next year? He’s got 12 goals, which is an unbelievable return for a club like that. I can’t see that happening, if Firmino leaves, I think they’ll got for a better player and a bigger name.”

McAvennie happy with West Ham’s keepers

Frank McAvennie has exclusively told Football FanCast that he doesn’t have a problem with West Ham’s goalkeeping situation amid Lukasz Fabianski’s recent contract extension, but he expects the 6 ft 3 star to only be there one more year.

The former Arsenal shot-stopper has been the Hammers number one ever since his arrival from Swansea in 2018, missing just 15 Premier League games in total.

His contract at the London Stadium was set to expire at the end of the campaign, but the Pole recently extended his deal by an additional year.

It’ll be a huge relief for West Ham, who felt Fabianski’s absence last season when Roberto endured a disastrous spell in the team, but the Spaniard was sold in the summer, meaning 35-year-old David Martin and Darren Randolph have been fighting for the number two spot.

Randolph is currently out injured, and former striker McAvennie is content with both Fabianski and Martin, who only has five Irons appearances under his belt, as the two senior stoppers, despite the former making the occasional mistake this term.

He told Football FanCast:

“Goalkeepers are always going to make clangers somewhere. He makes more saves than he drops. There are not many goalkeepers that are going to come in and challenge. The boy Martin, Alvin’s son, will be keeping him on his toes.

“I think Fabianski will be there another year, although Martin may come in and get a couple of chances.”

Fabianski has been a highly-reliable goalkeeper for West Ham in recent seasons, so it’s no wonder the club were keen on keeping him around for another 12 months.

And if the Hammers keep picking up results, then Fabianski’s fourth and final campaign at the London Stadium might be in Europe.

Have Celtic already sold their Brown heir?

Celtic’s recruitment in recent years hasn’t exactly been flooded with success stories. From the current crop at Parkhead, there are few that spring to mind.

The club’s top scorer Odsonne Edouard has been a triumph for obvious reasons while Kristoffer Ajer has developed from a boy to a man during his time in Glasgow.

That being said, plenty have walked through the door, played very little football, and then been sent packing again.

That could happen to quite a number of Celtic’s current playing squad. Vasilis Barkas cost £4.5m last summer but has started just 13 league games.

As for Albian Ajeti, he’s only started ten SPFL outings after arriving from West Ham. It’s clear that Nick Hammond and the Hoops hierarchy haven’t always got things spot on.

That being said, there are also errors from the Brendan Rodgers era we can delve into; namely Eboue Kouassi.

Rodgers brought the defensive midfielder to Scotland in 2017 but he featured on only 12 occasions in the league during his three years at the club.

Stuck behind Scott Brown in the pecking order, Rodgers failed to find many opportunities for him in the starting XI. After all, in domestic action, there was no chance a team as dominant as Celtic’s needed two holding players.

He eventually left the Hoops last summer as he completed a permanent switch to Genk. However, in the process, they ultimately lost the heir to Brown’s throne.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/latest-celtic-manager-and-transfer-news-roy-keane-nicky-butt-jesse-marsch-scott-brown” title=”Latest Celtic manager and transfer news!”]

The skipper has announced that he’ll leave Celtic on a free transfer at the end of the season when his contract in Glasgow expires. He is set to join Aberdeen as a player-coach and thus, will leave a pretty glaring gap in the Hoops squad behind.

Ismaila Soro feels like the most natural successor but in Kouassi, they had someone primed and ready to take on that duty.

Talking about the Ivorian in 2018, Rodgers tipped him to eventually succeed Brown in the middle of the park: “Eboue’s brilliant in training, he does everything, and longer term he will certainly fulfil that role when Scott moves on,” he said.

Unfortunately, that prophecy won’t ever come true. Kouassi was shipped off quicker than you could mutter the word Celtic.

He was moved on loan to Genk within a year of Lennon being there and he never got an opportunity to prove himself to the Northern Irishman.

The 23-year-old took his leave without ever really making an impact in Glasgow. It’s a shame because the midfielder clearly had lots of talent.

When he burst onto the scene for Russian club Krasnodar, he regularly completed over one tackle per game. A stern and combative player, Rodgers did rate him highly.

“He has good ability and hopefully can come back strongly from injury and show he has a big part to play,” he commented in January 2019.

“Eboue can play here though. That’s the reason such a young player cost a couple of million Euros. He has a talent and in the Europa League games played well,” the former Celtic boss added.

Ultimately, it was fitness doubts and injury concerns that ensured he never got a consistent opportunity at Parkhead.

Kouassi had his ankle problems and spent the second half of the 2018/19 campaign out with a cruciate ligament injury. Had those problems not occurred, he may now be in with a chance of succeeding Brown. Instead, he’s no longer at the club.

Veja a repercussão do jogo no vestiário.

Roteiro sonolento. Sem novidades. Insistente. Irritante.
