Crystal Palace forward Christian Benteke has put pen to paper with a new two-year contract, as reported by The Independent.

In a move that will delight the Selhurst Park faithful, the Belgian international is set to be a key player for the Eagles heading into 2021/22.

Few could argue against the award of a new contract, after an impressive 2020/21 season saw the 30-year-old net ten goals in 30 Premier League fixtures [Transfermarkt], with most of those coming towards the end of the campaign.

George Edmundson may have already played his last game for Rangers, with recent reports suggesting that he could be set for an Ibrox exit this summer after being overlooked by Steven Gerrard earlier in the season.

The 23-year-old centre-back was sent out on loan to Derby County in the winter transfer window after breaking some of the lockdown guidelines set out by the government back in 2020. Since signing from Oldham Athletic in the summer of 2019, the defender has made just 17 appearances for the Light Blues, in which he has contributed two goals and one assist.

Edmundson had made only two Gers appearances earlier in the season before his loan move, so it was always going to be difficult for him to return to Ibrox and re-establish himself in Gerrard’s squad, especially with their impressive title win this year.

The Gers remain unbeaten in the Premiership this term and much of that is down to their superb defensive record, which has seen them concede just 12 goals in 35 games.

Connor Goldson, Filip Helander and Leon Balogun have all impressed at centre-back, whilst Gerrard will also have Nikola Katic and Jack Simpson as options in that position next season, so it is difficult to see where Edmundson fits in.

Given that he hasn’t exactly set the world alight during his time with the Rams in the Championship, making eight appearances and averaging a 6.68 WhoScored rating for his performances, there seems little evidence that he would be a regular at Rangers next season.

Therefore, it would perhaps not be a surprise to see him depart Ibrox this summer, and now Football Insider have claimed that Rangers would be willing to sell him for a fee close to £1m should there be interest in him, so his future in Glasgow certainly looks bleak.

Unfortunately for Edmundson, he may well have played his last game under Gerrard, and it seems as if his off-field misdemeanours earlier this season could well end up costing him his Rangers career.

Manchester City will become Premier League champions on Sunday if Liverpool beat Manchester United at Old Trafford after they beat Crystal Palace 2-0 at Selhurst Park this afternoon.

In typical Sergio Aguero fashion on the big occasion, the Argentine scored a superb goal to give Pep Guardiola’s side the lead shortly before Ferran Torres’ well-taken second made things comfortable for the Citizens, who had to be patient before eventually forging in front.

Although the Spaniard had one of his best games in a Manchester City shirt, it was arguably his international teammate Rodri who ran the show against Roy Hodgson’s side. As per SofaScore, the former Atletico Madrid man earned a superb 8.1/10 rating for his performance, which was the best of any player who featured in the match.

During the 90 minutes, the £63m-rated defensive midfielder had a remarkable tally of 133 touches, which was comfortably the most of any player, whilst he completed 109 of his 119 passes at Selhurst Park, resulting in a 92% accuracy rate.

Considering he has averaged 83 passes per game in the Premier League so far this season, it is clear that he produced an excellent display against the Eagles. The 24-year-old was allowed to dictate the play and didn’t disappoint, completing 18 of his 21 long balls during the game, which allowed City to stretch the game and get at the home side’s defence.

Playing in a double pivot alongside Fernandinho, rather than his usual more attack-minded partners Kevin De Bruyne and Ilkay Gundogan, meant that Rodri could push further forwards and have an impact in the final third, which helped him contribute one key pass and one dribble, which again is above average for the midfielder.

He was also excellent from a defensive perspective, contributing four tackles during the game, which is twice as many as usual, emphasising just how important he was to City’s victory in Saturday’s early kick-off.

Therefore, whilst Torres was impressive and scored the clinching goal, Rodri’s superb performance should earn him a lot of credit.

Crystal Palace could potentially add a World Cup winner to their ranks this summer with Marseille’s Florian Thauvin being linked with a move to the club.

According to L’Equipe, the Eagles and Premier League rivals Leicester City have commenced talks with the Frenchman, whose contract expires in the summer.

Palace chairman Steve Parish must make sure that Palace secure his signature ahead of the competition, as it would be an absolute bargain.

In simple terms, Thauvin would be a huge upgrade on the current wide options at Selhurst Park. The former Newcastle United flop has flourished back in his home country.

In 274 appearances for Les Olympiens, he has scored 86 goals and notched 60 assists in all competitions, including eight throughout the 2020/21 season.

For context, since he moved back to France in 2016, Palace’s highest contributing attacker Wilfried Zaha has contributed just 41 goals and 36 assists in the same time frame. This would therefore make the likes of Andros Townsend and Jeffrey Schlupp pale into almost insignificance.

Thauvin’s quality had certainly been predicted long before he started displaying those kind of statistics. Current Leeds United boss Marcelo Bielsa suggested as far back as six years ago that the winger was going to be “important” for Marseille – an assessment that has certainly been revealed as the truth.

Whilst his former Toulouse boss Alain Casanova once compared the winger to fellow Frenchman Franck Ribery and also dubbed him a  “very dangerous” player capable of being able to “disrupt any opponent,” as per the Guardian. He’s not lost any of that ability over the years.

For a player of such immense quality, it would certainly be quite the statement from Palace if they were to secure him.

Rated at £28.8m by Transfermarkt, they would also not have to pay an outright fee for the 28-year-old, instead being able to welcome him to Selhurst Park on a free transfer.

With as many as 16 senior players out of contract and the squad in desperate need of rejuvenation, saving money on the likes of Thauvin really could benefit the squad and indeed the club going into 2021/22.

Palace then must make sure they convince the winger to commit to them instead of their Premier League rivals.
