Nottingham Forest should heed warning and give Michael Dawson extra rest

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Not so soon.

There’s always an extra spice when it comes to Derby games, and that’s something that former Red Garry Birtles knows well. It’s something that could cause some problems for one player in particular.

What’s he said?

Speaking to Nottinghamshire Live, Birtles pointed out how the emotion gets to players and it can lead to some rather rash moments:

“We all know what these games meant to both clubs and both sets of supporters, and no doubt the opening exchanges will be chaotic as they usually are, so you hope that when things settle down, Forest’s ball players will take control and exert their authority over the Rams.”

Too fiery for some?

Birtles also recently spoke, again to Nottinghamshire Live, and he noted how important it is to not change a winning line up.

And that message doesn’t strike any truer than when it comes to Forest skipper Michael Dawson.

Whilst Birtles is on the money when it comes to not changing a team that won the last match, there’s something else that comes into the equation and that’s his injury. This is where the two stories come together.

The latest injury report lists Dawson as being available for the game this week, but it seems that a match like this, and particularly at this time of the season, would be one encounter too early for him to be making his comeback.

Not only will leaving him out of the clash take him out of the firing line from any rash challenges that might take place in the opening exchanges, but also give him that little bit of extra rest as he recovers from his calf injury.

Forest showed what time off can do for the team when they beat Luton Town last weekend, with Lewis Grabban scoring the opener after they’d previously had a game postponed.

With the international break just around the corner, it would be best if Lamouchi gave Dawson the week off and let him have that extra time away to make sure that he is at 100% when he comes back from injury.

Lamouchi has shown that he doesn’t have a lot of faith in Dawson’s backup Chema and Tobias Figueiredo by constantly swapping the two of them around in recent fixtures rather than sticking with one of them, so that proves just how important he is to the team.

Rather lose him for just one more game, than risk losing him for a lot more in the future.

Internazionale: Romelu Lukaku back from injury for Juventus clash

Romelu Lukaku will be available for Internazionale’s top-of-the-table clash against Juventus, according to Sky Sports Italia, via Calciomercato.

The striker missed the 2-1 Champions League loss against Barcelona, but will now be ready and available to play on Sunday, with Inter going into the game top of the league, two points ahead of the reigning champions.

Having Lukaku available is a definite boost for Inter, with the Belgium international having started 5 league games, coming off the bench once, scoring 3 goals in the process, as per WhoScored.

His record already includes a big goal, as he scored Inter’s second in their 2-0 victory over bitter rivals AC Milan with a well-placed header, as shown in the highlights video on the Serie A YouTube channel.

In addition to his goals, Lukaku has made 1.3 key passes and 0.7 dribbles per Serie A game, as well as averaging 4.5 aerial duels won and making 1 tackle per game – highlighting how much of a presence he is up front.

Inter will likely feel much more confident going into this game with Lukaku on the pitch, as they look to continue their perfect start to the Serie A campaign and break away from Juventus.

This is a massive game for the club, so they will certainly be looking towards Lukaku to make a difference on the day.

Man Utd fans have a laugh over Marcos Rojo’s failed rabona against Astana

[ad_pod ]

Oh Marcos Rojo. That’s exactly why you play at the back, my friend. The Argentina international probably grew up watching Diego Maradona tear things up with his skills and tricks, and thought ‘you know what? I’ll have some of that thank you very much’.

The 29-year-old was given a rare chance to start in Manchester United’s opening Europa League game of the season against FC Astana, and he made sure it was an occasion to remember for the tens of thousands in attendance.

Playing as a left-back, the former Sporting CP star cut inside on to his right foot just outside the opposition penalty area, and undoubtedly saw his name in lights. ‘This is it Marcos. Ballon d’Or incoming’.

Instead, the centre-back contrived to get his legs in a tangle, and saw his attempted rabona come cannoning off an Astana player. So much for that then.

After seeing the game’s true highlight of the evening (sorry Mason Greenwood), United fans flooded to Twitter to revel in Rojo’s genius.

Many Red Devils supporters took the proverbial mickey out of the Argentine, with one fan in particular suggesting he should re-name himself as “Rojodinho”.

Others showed him a bit more love, and insisted EA Sports give him five-star skills on the latest FIFA game.

Sheffield Wednesday boss Garry Monk on the right path with 4-4-2 system

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Garry Monk’s reign as Sheffield Wednesday boss extended to a third league game without defeat following their emphatic 4-1 victory over one of his former clubs, Middlesbrough.

The home side actually handed the Owls an early lead through Adam Clayton as his header soared past his own goalkeeper before centre-back Dominic Iorfa towered highest to double the advantage less than a minute later.

Paddy McNair netted one back for Boro, but that wasn’t enough as a goal-laden first half continued on.

Visiting winger Adam Reach fired in from just inside the area before Steven Fletcher picked up his fifth of the season in the 34th minute – surprisingly that would be the last goal of the match but nonetheless, a resounding victory for Monk and his men.

On the Chalkboard

In midweek, the 40-year-old had reverted to a 4-4-2 formation for the first time this season as they welcomed a strong Everton side to Hillsborough in the Carabao Cup.

Now the result might not have been what they wanted as they faced a 2-0 defeat, but they created several chances and even recorded more shots on goal than their Premier League opposition – despite making eight changes too.

Wednesday were far more clinical and ruthless on Saturday, converting all four of their shots on target, with Monk sticking with the formation he often deployed at Birmingham City.

It appears that this system could indeed be the right one to lead the Owls to success this season, they certainly have the strength in depth required to pull it off.

Atdhe Nuhiu partnered Steven Fletcher at the Riverside, and that resulted in a goal and an assist between them – but against different opposition, he also has Sam Winnall to call upon.

Out wide, Monk has a wealth of options with Adam Reach, Jacob Murphy and Kadeem Harris while in the centre, summer arrival Massimo Luongo and Joey Pelupessy offer healthy competition to stand-in skipper Barry Bannan and Sam Hutchinson.

The brainwave to revert to a 4-4-2 formation at just the right time may have been a blessing in disguise as Wednesday moved to just one point of the playoffs.

Everton made the right call by ending their interest in Artem Dzyuba

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

Striker Artem Dzyuba has told Sport24 that Everton were interested in signing him last January, as reported by Russian outlet Championat.

What’s the story?

The 31-year-old has spent his entire career in Russia so far and had built up a reputation for being strong on the ball, as well as being a striker who can chip in with a fair amount of goals who also holds the ball up effectively.

He has claimed that he had attention from the Toffees and Wolves over the winter, with both clubs sending scouts out to assess his performances for Zenit St Petersburg, where his current contract expires at the end of the season.

It is not known if the club submitted a formal offer to bring him in mid-season, but the 6 foot 4 striker claimed he was not interested due to the prospect of winning the Russian Super League, which he duly achieved.

He also added that he hoped a move would materialise over the summer, but it seems as though the Goodison Park outfit instead opted for Moise Kean, whose playing style is a complete contrast to Dzyuba’s.

Better off with Kean

It is an interesting revelation that Everton had an interest in Dzyuba, particularly in January when Marco Silva was beginning to move away from the inconsistent Cenk Tosun, whose height and physical stature makes him a similar type of striker to the Russian.

With Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Oumar Niasse also at the club the Toffees aren’t short of height up front, and it therefore seems strange that the Portuguese was looking to add another big man to his options in attack.

Everton fans are likely thankful that the summer brought a change in transfer approach – opting against signing an ageing striker with a record of one goal in three in a division of much lower quality than the Premier League.

Watch Everton Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

Instead, a young and exciting forward blessed with pace was brought in – Kean – and although he is yet to get off the mark so far he has shown his talent and energy up-front, with his pressing resulting in the opening goal against Wolves.

His attributes should also suit Everton and the Premier League much better than Dzyuba would have, as displayed already by his positive link-up play with players such as Alex Iwobi and Gylfi Sigurdsson against Lincoln and Wolves.

Arsenal fans buzzing after Unai Emery reveals Shkodran Mustafi can leave

[ad_pod ]

Hold the press, Shkodran Mustafi could still leave Arsenal this summer.

The Germany international has been the subject of heavy criticism since arriving from Valencia in a big-money deal, and was the target of boos from Arsenal fans on the club’s pre-season tour last month.

The 27-year-old’s high-profile mistakes have certainly not endeared him to the Emirates faithful, and it appears Unai Emery has similarly been left unconvinced.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference, the Arsenal boss admitted he had spoken to Mustafi on a few occasions this summer to outline how he has the possibility to leave the club, with many foreign transfer windows still open until the end of August or beginning of September.

[ad_pod ]

After hearing Emery’s update on Mustafi’s future, Arsenal fans took to Twitter to share their thoughts on the matter.

Many supporters of the north London side hailed the club’s new ruthless approach when it came to under-performing players and pointed back to how things were different under Arsene Wenger.

Indeed, some fans hailed Emery for “saving” the club and insisted they were “moving in the right direction” under the Spaniard.

Spurs’ Trippier has been an exceptional servant despite Atletico move

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

Kieran Trippier has completed a £20m move to Atletico Madrid.

Spurs confirmed on Tuesday that they had reached an agreement to sell the England international to the Spanish club.

It brings the curtain down on a four-year spell in north London, in which Trippier played 114 times for Spurs.

And he should be remembered as a noble servant who always strived to the best he could be.

Now, of course, he endured a difficult season in 2018/19. After the highs of last summer’s World Cup in which, amazingly, he briefly became the best full-back in the world and made a country believe that maybe, just maybe, it was coming home with that spectacular free-kick against Croatia, he saw his stock fall so far that he was left out of Gareth Southgate’s squad for the Nations League finals.

And yet, he has never been anything short of professional. He played a key role as Spurs reached the Champions League final and started in the showpiece.

He is an excellent crosser of the ball, he scored a brilliant free-kick against Fulham that actually topped his effort in the semi-final, and has always been trusted by Mauricio Pochettino.

Of course, it is easy to forget that he was simply a deputy when he was signed for a modest £3.5m from Burnley in 2015.

He came into the club in the era of Kyle Walker but made the right-back spot his own as soon as he left for Manchester City.

Those were big shoes to fill and he did it with aplomb; throughout the 2017/18 season, he was excellent, an assiduous defender and a danger going forward.

Watch Tottenham Hotspur Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

He leaves with two goals under his belt and 24 assists.

This is a classic Daniel Levy signing; he was picked up for peanuts and moves on having raised his stock overall, become an England international and played at the very highest level in the game.

It remains to be seen if he will make it in La Liga but he will be playing under one of the very best defensive coaches on the planet in Diego Simeone.

One thing is for sure, though; he should be wished well as he heads out of the Hotspur Way exits.

This is a player who has been made into what he is by Tottenham Hotspur and he is now seeking pastures new as he looks to recover from a season when he simply didn’t live up to the high expectations he himself had set.

That is no bad thing. Every Spurs fan should want him to succeed.

Man United fans discuss Paul Pogba’s future after post-match response

[ad_pod ]

As reported by The Mirror, Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba refused to be drawn on his future over the weekend, speaking after his side’s 2-0 pre-season victory against Perth Glory.

Asked to clarify his current situation at Old Trafford, Pogba offered a short response, quoted by the paper as saying: “Who needs to talk? There’s no need.”

It comes after heavy speculation about his desire to stay at Man United after claiming in June that it could be time for a “new challenge” in his career.

Could Paul Pogba be on his way out of Old Trafford? 442oons have put their unqiue spin on the matter in the video below…

The French World Cup winner was one of United’s most important players last season, scoring 16 goals and assisting 11 times in all competitions.

If United are to be reborn under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer then they need to retain their elite talent and Pogba plays at a level that can help push them towards the top four of the English Premier League.

Fans are now digesting his post-match comments, with many believing that the player leaving Manchester this summer is far from a sure thing and others declaring he should be Red Devils captain going forward.

These supporters took to Twitter over the last 48 hours to share their thoughts…
