Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris’ mistake vs Southampton summed up by experts

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Expert Roundup feature, which provides three quotes from those in the know in order to illuminate fundamental strengths, weaknesses, quirks, stylistic comparisons and general observations of players, transfer targets and confirmed signings.

Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Hugo Lloris must be mightily relieved that not only did his team managee to take all three points against Southampton on Saturday, but that Serge Aurier’s first half red card appears to have overshadowed his dreadful error.

The France international had so much time to clear the ball when it was passed back to him as the 10-man hosts looked to hold on to the 1-0 lead they had, but he failed miserably with a Cruyff Turn to allow Danny Ings to prod the ball over the line.

Luckily for the north London outfit it didn’t prove costly as Harry Kane’s goal proved to be the difference between the two, but plenty of pundits have expressed their concerns over the experienced 32-year-old, who cost £12m when he signed from Lyon in 2012.

Here’s what they had to say…

Don Hutchison

Speaking on ESPN FC’s YouTube channel, the former West Ham United midfielder said: “You can’t try a trick there. If you’re going to try a trick make sure it comes off, he had loads of options to the left-hand side. It was ludicrous, it was bad professionalism and it was shocking goalkeeping.”

Jamie Redknapp

The former Tottenham star wrote in his Daily Mail column: “They were badly let down by errors from Serge Aurier and Hugo Lloris on Saturday and Lloris in particular is a worry. In the last year the Frenchman has made a few mistakes you wouldn’t expect from him.

Sam Allardyce

Speaking on Goals on Sunday, in quotes reported by HITC, the former England manager said: “The perception is that this is good for the game. For me, that is a false perception. This is just making the wrong decisions in the wrong areas most of the time. We have seen so many goals given away like this now – that’s just blatant poor play.

“When you start asking goalkeepers, who can’t play out from the back, and I think Lloris is a fabulous goalkeeper, but he falls short on the ball when he is playing out from the back.”

Verdict

They’ve all got a point, to be fair.

A player of Lloris’ experience and quality shouldn’t be making a mistake like that, and perhaps it is time for Pochettino to stop making the Frenchman play out from the back, as it is something he appears increasingly uncomfortable doing.

That blunder could easily have cost Tottenham one or three points at the weekend had Southampton shown more quality in the final third, and that is the last thing they need following an already-tough start to the campaign.

It is certainly a worry the Argentine manager could do without considering the other issues he has to deal with, including the likes of Christian Eriksen, Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld all being out of contract next summer.

Wolves’ decision to withdraw Morgan Gibbs-White against Braga proved costly

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Off the Bench series, which places in-game managerial decisions and squad selections under FFC’s microscope.

Wolves succumbed to defeat in their Europa League Group K opener as Braga snatched all three points with a 1-0 victory at Molineux on Thursday night.

A defensive mistake from centre-back Ryan Bennett handed the ball on a plate to Wenderson Galeno, who then charged towards goal before pulling the ball back for Ricardo Horta to smash home past Rui Patricio from the edge of the area.

Snapshot

The goal occurred just four minutes after a key substitution from the home side.

With the game becoming increasingly frustrating for Wolves, their boss Nuno Santo needed a creative spark in midfield and turned to Portuguese playmaker Joao Moutinho in the 67th minute as he replaced Morgan Gibbs-White.

Moutinho assisted eight goals in the Premier League last season while the 33-year-old managed half that in the team’s six qualification matches leading to this match.

Off the Bench

In hindsight, it was the wrong decision as the England U21 international was one of the livelier players on the pitch.

Gibbs-White recorded two key passes, three successful dribbles and even drew two fouls, thus resulting in valuable dead-ball opportunities.

The introduction of Moutinho wasn’t the wrong move per se, but certainly, the incorrect player was replaced.

Instead, Leander Dendoncker should have been hauled off for yet another disastrous and weak showing.

The Belgian international conceded two fouls and his passing was generally sloppy, recording a success rate of just 68.2% which was the lowest in the starting XI barring striker Patrick Cutrone.

His form domestically has followed a similar nature, averaging a lowly rating of just 6.38 – and his regression is something FFC have already outlined previously.

If Moutinho was introduced alongside Gibbs-White they could have garnered better success in front of goal, there’s no way of knowing if Braga still would have scored, though it was unlikely considering they had registered just one shot on target prior to the 71st-minute winner.

The young 19-year-old midfielder scored his first goal for the club in this very competition netting against Pyunik and was one of Wolves’ only threats in the attacking third.

That decision may well have stopped the west Midlands club opening their account in Group K with a perfect result.

Andrea Radrizzani and Victor Orta have helped the Whites have a shrewd summer

[ad_pod ]

Leeds United’s summer ploughed doubts right into the heart of the fan base.

Following a 4-0 defeat at the hands of Manchester United in pre-season, there were complaints over their defence. Just how on earth was a team with Gaetano Berardi going to compete as they did last term?

How, without squad depth, were Leeds going to achieve promotion? There were endless concerns, not least with the potential for injuries too.

And indeed, just before the season started, Kemar Roofe suffered an injury blow against Western Sydney Wanderers.

It left the Whites with just Patrick Bamford in attack. However, things changed. Roofe is now an Anderlecht player, swapping Yorkshire for Brussels.

Bamford scored on the opening day but looked at his worst against Nottingham Forest last weekend, spurning a succession of chances in what was a frustrating afternoon for the former Middlesbrough man.

Yet, they now have Eddie Nketiah in their ranks who will be full of confidence after scoring on his debut against Salford.

That game was a strange one, even Berardi found the net, so just how much can be taken from it is a difficult matter.

But where concerns laid firmly at the feet of Leeds supporters heading into the new term, the major pillars of Andrea Radrizzani and Victor Orta have completed some cunning business.

Losing Roofe and also Pontus Jansson in the same window will have come as bitter losses, especially with one scoring 15 and the other appearing in the PFA Championship Team of the Year, but Leeds are more than just two players.

In fact, they’re a squad that for the most part have been kept together. Angus Kinnear admitted recently that the Whites turned down £35m worth of bids for players like Kalvin Phillips, Pablo Hernandez, Luke Ayling and Adam Forshaw.

That’s mightily impressive, particularly for a side who claimed financial fair play was one of the reasons for Jansson’s departure.

Deep down, it was likely more a case of his attitude than it was financial reasons. The very fact they were able to reject in excess of £35m, though, shows that their problems in that department may not be so big.

Holding onto a host of their stars was absolutely pivotal this summer and should send a message to the rest of the division.

Kinnear also claimed the following, telling Yorkshire Evening Post: “I’m fairly confident in saying I don’t think there’s any other club in the Championship that has turned down offers over £20m for one player this season, I think everybody else has accepted those offers.”

And indeed, he can be confident in saying that. Bristol City lost Adam Webster for a fee of £20m whilst Swansea let go of Oliver McBurnie for the exact same price.

But that shows the commitment to the cause the likes of Radrizzani and Orta have. They may not be the most unanimously popular of figures but they’ve managed to get the job done this summer.

The interview with Kinnear was a hugely revealing one, also detailing: “If you want further evidence of Andrea’s commitment it’s firstly the decision to keep Kalvin Phillips.”

He was touted with potential moves to Aston Villa, Wolves and Bournemouth but eventually stayed put as it was revealed by his agent he’d sit down for contract discussions.

Furthermore, it’s also the arrivals that illuminate how well Leeds have done.

They may have predominantly relied on loan deals but Helder Costa will become permanent next year in a transfer Kinnear has described as the single biggest inbound in the division.

In saying that, it’s a mark of Leeds’ ambition and indeed the might that they possess.

To further illustrate that, they’ve signed Nketiah on loan, a striker who initially looked as though he’d stay at Arsenal and become a part of their squad.

They’ve also brought in Illan Meslier, a goalkeeper once linked with moves to Monaco and Chelsea, with a view to a permanent transfer.

Not many clubs in the league will have been able to do that but despite initially only being temporary moves, it shows the canny and cunning nature of Orta and Radrizzani.

Leeds may still have questions defensively and in terms of their ability to score goals but with players like Ben White, Costa, Nketiah and Meslier there are definite foundations.

The fact is that, for the moment, this window cannot be considered a disaster.

That, of course, could change in the future, but on the surface the business they concluded in the summer was actually rather shrewd.

Liverpool fans have mixed views on James Milner’s contract situation

[ad_pod ]

James Milner will see his current deal with Liverpool expire at the end of this season.

The 33-year-old has made 180 appearances for the Merseyside giants since arriving from Manchester City in 2015, and he is still a highly important figure at the club.

Indeed, Milner captained the Reds in their 2-1 win over Southampton in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon.

The 5 ft 9 ace was not involved in the Community Shield against Manchester City earlier this month but has played in all three of the team’s fixtures since.

It remains to be seen what happens with Milner at the end of the 2019-20 campaign.

And his future has sparked an interesting debate on social media.

There are Liverpool fans who want to keep the midfielder beyond the end of his current deal, although others believe that this summer would be the right time for him to move on.

Rangers fans are fuming at Borna Barisic’s latest disappointing display

[ad_pod ]

Despite beating Kilmarnock 2-1 on Sunday, the Rangers fans aren’t happy with the performance of their left-back Borna Barisic.

After Scott Arfield’s opener was cancelled out by Killie’s Stephen O’Donnell, a last-minute Connor Goldson winner gave Steven Gerrard’s men all three points on the opening weekend of the Premiership season.

Goldson’s last-gasp header meant the Rangers fans went home happy after what had looked like being another disappointing result against the Ayrshire side.

Yet, even with the late heroics, the Gers supporters weren’t pleased with Barisic – and not for the first time this season either.

The Croat endured a tricky first season at Ibrox, only featuring 22 times after signing from Osijek last summer.

This campaign hasn’t started much better, as he was withdrawn at half-time against Progres Niederkorn last week, and was bullied by Chris Burke in the second half at Rugby Park.

The supporters have pulled no punches in their assessment of the defender, with many coming to the end of their tether after yet another abject display.

Chelsea: Abramovich has no option but to be patient with Lampard following Hazard exit

With Derby County confirming they have given Chelsea permission to speak to Frank Lampard about their vacant manager position, it looks nailed on that the 41-year-old will be in the Stamford Bridge dugout next season.

And according to The Telegraph, the Blues’ legendary midfielder can be expected to get at least one full campaign at the club barring the worst-case scenario of a relegation battle.

Looking at the predicament Chelsea are in, you would have to say Roman Abramovich has no choice but to give Lampard that and that anything less would be extremely harsh.

Of course, the current Derby boss will have an extremely talented crop of young players to call upon, something highlighted well by talkSPORT. However, with that transfer ban in play, he will be unable to sign an Eden Hazard replacement this summer.

Most Chelsea fans will have faith that Callum Hudson-Odoi will be able to step in for the Belgian, but producing 16 Premier League goals and 15 assists will be no easy feat.

Considering that, Lampard surely deserves to get to a season where he will be able to use the transfer market. Asking him to perform miracles in this current climate would just not be fair.

Until he gets to operate in the transfer window — assuming he gets the job, of course — Abramovich and co should not judge Lampard’s work too harshly.

Chelsea fans, just how much leeway do you think Lampard should be given next season? Let us know yours thoughts in the comment section below!

No thanks! Liverpool fans don’t want Real Madrid outcast Gareth Bale

[ad_pod ]

Liverpool fans have taken to Twitter to say that they certainly don’t want Real Madrid outcast Gareth Bale at the club.

Spanish journalist Eduardo Inda of Okdiario said that the Welshman is likely to join either of the Champions League finalists Liverpool or Tottenham, in quotes that won’t sit well with the Liverpool fans below.

Luis Suarez certainly had no qualms about celebrating against his former employers in the video below…

The Southampton academy graduate has endured a tough season in the Spanish capital and Madrid are reportedly trying to get rid of the man they paid a whopping £85m for back in 2014.

Bale hit 14 goals and recorded six assists in the campaign just gone, but his massive wages – he allegedly earns £650,000-a-week – may prove to be a stumbling block for any interested clubs; he has also suffered with his fair share of injury problems.

He would certainly be a risky signing all things considered, and one that the Reds should quite rightly stay away from – it has since been revealed by the Liverpool Echo that a move for the forward would be unlikely.

Let’s see what the Liverpool supporters on Twitter have been saying on the matter…
