Wolves news on Moutinho

Lots of Wolves fans have been left buzzing over some news that has emerged on Joao Moutinho.

As per Ekrem Konur, the Midlands club are now planning to give the central midfield player a one-year extension to his contract.

Moutinho has been a key player for the Molineux faithful over the years, having played in every single game so far this season, and notched up a total of 142 appearances over all competitions across the last four consecutive campaigns, scoring three goals and making a further 22 assists (Transfermarkt).

The 34-year-old has so much experience and is also key in the dressing room, and so keeping a character like him at the club for another year is a wise decision.

Crystal Palace fans react to Edouard update

Crystal Palace appears to be the most likely destination for Celtic striker Odsonne Edouard this summer.

That’s according to Ryan Taylor of The Daily Express, whose Twitter update on Friday evening had a lot of Eagles fans talking.

The Telegraph linked Palace with a swoop for Edouard earlier in the week, and Taylor believes that Selhurst Park could be the Frenchman’s next move before the end of the window, with the Hoops wanting £15m.

The 23-year-old is into the final 12 months of his Parkhead contract and has been working on a transfer after a move to Leicester City collapsed. He has been a regular under new manager Ange Postecoglou, though, scoring in a 6-0 win over St Mirren on Saturday.

Palace want to bolster Patrick Vieira’s squad with two new forwards before the end of the month, and it seems as if a swoop for Edouard may well have legs.

Ireland keep final hopes alive with thrilling win

An extraordinary opening day was followed by an incredible second as Ireland kept their hopes of making it to the final alive with a eight-run win in Windhoek

Cricinfo staff04-Oct-2008
ScorecardAn extraordinary opening day, on which 25 wickets fell, was followed by an incredible second as Ireland kept their hopes of making it to the final alive with an eight-run win in Windhoek. Leading by 27 with just five wickets left in their second innings, Ireland stretched it to 114 and the bowlers ensured Namibia, already in the final, didn’t overhaul the target. It was the bowlers who dominated the day again, medium-pacers Kola Burger and Boyd Rankin completing five-wicket hauls with no batsman crossing 30 in the match.Ireland’s comeback began confidently with Andrew White and Trent Johnston, their former captain, adding 27. Left-armer Kola Burger dismissed the two in quick succession to make it five for the innings, but Regan West (27) and Kyle McCallan (19) put on 47 for the eighth wicket. Kola’s brother, Sarel Burger, took two lower-order wickets.Set 115, Namibia’s hopes of a win were quickly jolted when they were reduced to 31 for 4. Gerrie Snyman top scored with a 14-ball 28 (three fours, two sixes) but Namibia managed just four double-figure stands. The best was the seventh-wicket stand of 27 between Craig Williams and Bjorn Kotze, both of whom scored 16. The tail failed to wag enough to take Namibia to victory; Rankin took 5 for 39 as Ireland sealed the win. Johnston took 2 for 9 off his five overs, while Rankin’s new-ball partner Peter Connell had three wickets in his nine, conceding 49.Ireland now need an outright win, without conceding a lead on the first innings, in their final game, against second-placed Kenya, to qualify for the final. The four-day clash begins on October 11 in Nairobi.

Moyes receives major West Ham boost

Declan Rice has returned to training this week and an encouraging update has emerged on his West Ham future…

What’s the word?

The 22-year-old England international has reportedly turned down two contract offers from the Irons’ hierarchy in recent months and according to the Telegraph, he is expected to reject further attempts as he waits to see if interest from Manchester United or Chelsea leads to anything more serious in terms of a transfer.

However, with the midfielder finally back at Rush Green after a post-Euro 2020 break, it seems that he is very committed to his boyhood club, as revealed by journalist Matt Law.

“Update on Declan Rice who has returned to pre-season training at West Ham. Current situation, despite turning down two contract offers, is it looks like he will start the season in East London – and he will keep giving his all,” he tweeted.

It’s thought that, despite interest from the two aforementioned Premier League giants, Rice is preparing for the new season as the Hammers’ vice-captain.

Moyes’ major boost

Even though the Irons’ £100m valuation of Rice has put off many interested parties, it appears that Rice isn’t forcing an exit at the London Stadium and that’ll come as a massive boost to David Moyes and the fanbase.

Rice is a captain-in-waiting, with West Ham legend Mark Noble due to retire at the end of the season, and that emphasises just how crucial a presence he is in this squad.

WhoScored ranked the £63m-rated powerhouse as Moyes’ fourth-best player in 2020/21 as they secured a spot in the Europa League. Rice topped the charts for interceptions per game (1.8), proving to be a very hard man to bypass in the engine room, whilst he wasn’t far behind for tackles per game (1.8) either.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-west-ham-news-transfer-rumours-the-latest-gossip-and-more” title= “Read the latest West Ham news, transfer rumours, gossip and much more!”]

His rising influence is further seen by the fact that he averaged more passes per game (47.7) than any other Hammers player, meaning most of their play runs through him at some point and it’s even more impressive that he did so with a team-high 88% accuracy.

At one stage last season, the Hammers’ European dreams looked to be over as they struggled in the absence of Rice.

With the 22-year-old on the treatment table, the East Londoners lost three of four matches before he returned to see out the final three games unbeaten. Again, that merely shows his importance to Moyes as a key cog to their recent success.

Therefore, this latest update from Law is going to hand the 58-year-old one huge boost heading into the new season, which begins in less than two weeks.

For now, it seems like Rice is a West Ham player for the foreseeable future, and that gives them every chance of repeating last season’s success.

Leeds’ Leif Davis set for Bournemouth loan

Leeds United defender Leif Davis is set for a loan move to Bournemouth following a surprise late development.

What’s the story?

Reports in recent days had suggested that the 21-year-old was in advanced talks with Scott Parker’s side over a season-long loan move, but that appeared to have fallen through. Football Insider claimed that the plug had been pulled on the young defender’s move to the south coast, and that those involved in the discussions did not expect talks to be restarted.

However, it now appears that a deal has been resurrected at the 11th hour, with Football Insider revealing some big news from behind-the-scenes.

They outlined: “A Leeds source has told Football Insider that Davis underwent a Cherries medical on Saturday after the two clubs reached agreement over a season-long loan.

“The transfer is expected to be completed in the next 24 hours. Davis will then be able to link up with his new teammates and prepare for Bournemouth’s Championship campaign starting against West Brom on 6 August.

“Marcelo Bielsa is keen for Davis to get regular senior playing experience rather than be a bit-part figure at Leeds. Davis, who is primarily a left-back but can also move across to centre-back, is keen to be playing regularly.”

Bielsa will be delighted

Having played just 31 minutes of football in the Premier League last season, and predominantly spending his time with the under-23s, Davis didn’t get too many opportunities to impress in the first team.

However, there’s no questioning that those behind the scenes at Leeds rate him very highly indeed, with The Athletic’s Phil Hay making a big claim about how the staff at Thorp Arch think of the 21-year-old.

Hay said: “He’s very well thought of, is Davis, and he has been since he came, and of the Under-23s, he’s really been as involved as most under Bielsa and has quite often been the go-to player when Bielsa’s needed a left-back.

“The bottom line is that at Leeds, they think an awful lot of Davis, and they think that he’s a bit of a steal for what they paid to sign him from Morecambe.”

Getting him a season-long loan move to a promotion-chasing side like Bournemouth, where he should play consistently, is exactly what’s needed for his development, and he should return as a much better player and person for it next summer.

Given Football Insider’s claim that Bielsa is “keen” for Davis to be playing regularly, most probably with a view to eventually using him in the first team setup at Leeds in the coming years, the Whites boss must be delighted that a loan move is now set to happen for the youngster.

Meanwhile, Leeds United have made an approach for this English youngster…

Watson ton drives easy Australia win

How they were out

Shane Watson made his first ODI century and Ricky Ponting bounced back to form as Australia completed yet another one-sided victory over West Indies to take an unbeatable 3-0 lead in the five-match series. Chasing 224 on a decent batting pitch, Australia ruthlessly took advantage of a lacklustre bowling effort from West Indies to cruise to one of their easiest wins in recent memory, reaching the target with seven wickets in hand and 57 balls to spare.Watson is competing with Shaun Marsh to become the permanent limited-overs opening partner for Matthew Hayden and his 126 will do his cause significant good. He fell late in the chase, paddle-sweeping to short fine-leg, but Andrew Symonds and Michael Clarke had no trouble getting Australia over the line. As well as Watson played, he will rarely enjoy an innings at international level where he is under less pressure.West Indies’ total was never likely to be enough but when Fidel Edwards removed Marsh in the first over there should have been some spark. Instead there was nothing. Just as their woeful batting display on Friday led to a couple of omissions for this match, their ordinary effort with the ball on this occasion must raise questions over the attack, while their fielding was also distinctly sub-par.Watson’s innings ticked over at around a run a ball but he hardly needed to take any risks, instead pouncing on short and wide offerings and clipping confidently through leg when the fast men strayed onto his pads. He cut an out-of-sorts Sulieman Benn for thee fours in one over when the spinner repeatedly pitched too short and wide and the third of the boundaries gave Watson his half-century from 48 deliveries. However, his innings should not be regarded lightly and there were moments of pure Watson perfection, as when he clubbed Dwayne Bravo back over his head for a huge six, and a couple of straight drives highlighted a sound batting technique. His century came up from 106 balls with a pulled four when Chris Gayle dropped short and a double-arm-raised cheer showed how important the milestone was after 68 matches and six on-and-off years in the team.Ponting was equally happy to make the most of the insipid bowling display. Early in his innings he dispatched four boundaries in three overs when Daren Powell and Edwards constantly overpitched – the ultimate gift for a man who started the series with a pair of failures – and he rarely looked threatened until slog-sweeping a catch to Xavier Marshall at long-on when he had 69.That ended the innings of “R Pointin”, according to the National Cricket Stadium’s scoreboard, which for most of the day didn’t even work and left the fans with no idea of the progress as there was no manual scoreboard as a backup. It hardly improved Grenada’s reputation after Friday’s unacceptable and repeated sightscreen glitches, but really the off-field embarrassments were trivial compared to West Indies’ regular malfunctions on the park over the past three days. The batting looked like it might finally gel when Gayle and Marshall put on an 86-run opening stand after being sent in by Ponting but another string of unfulfilled starts left the fans disappointed. Even allowing for the frailty of the West Indies middle order, it was impossible to believe they would fail to bat out their overs after the openers lasted until the 18th over. But it all fell apart for them again and Australia were all smiles as Brett Lee became the fastest man to reach 300 ODI wickets with a skied caught-and-bowled that removed Darren Sammy, and then soccered the ball onto the stumps in a comedic run-out as Powell dropped the ball at his feet, started, stopped, started again, slipped, and was caught short trying to crawl back to his crease. That dismissal told the story of West Indies’ day.It could have been so different but Marshall, Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Ramnaresh Sarwan were all caught after making solid starts and reaching the 30s. Sarwan and Chanderpaul guided them to 160 for 2 before Chanderpaul edged behind off Symonds and was snared by some sharp work from Luke Ronchi, who knocked the ball up on his first attempt and pouched it second grab. Four overs later, when Sarwan had 31, he impatiently drove Mitchell Johnson straight to Symonds at cover after being tied down for four consecutive dot balls.Wickets just kept falling. Andre Fletcher had 12 when he came out of his crease to Nathan Bracken, apparently forgetting that Ronchi was keeping up close, and was brilliantly stumped when he missed an attempted pull. It was the third outstanding piece of glovework from Ronchi, playing only his second ODI. He also sent Marshall back for 35 when he hurled himself to his right, toward where a first slip might have been, to grasp a thick edge.Marshall had taken a backseat to Gayle, who looked so ominous that shots he appeared to mistime even flew to the boundary. He hammered three sixes on his way to 53 from 54 balls and recorded his 100th six in one-day internationals when he picked up an outswinger on a driveable length off Bracken and slammed it back over the bowler’s head. But the only bright point of West Indies’ day was extinguished when Marshall’s straight drive clipped the bowler Johnson’s fingers and rebounded onto the stumps to have Gayle unluckily run out.It was all a downhill slide from there. After a Test series that, while won 2-0 by Australia, was fiercely competitive, the one-day portion of the tour has been awfully one-sided. And there are still two games to go.

Pundit says Tottenham won’t re-sign Bale as Ancelotti wants him

Sky Sports journalist Michael Bridge told Football FanCast that Gareth Bale won’t be returning to Tottenham for a third time because Carlo Ancelotti wants to keep him.

Bale was re-signed by Jose Mourinho for a sensational second spell in north London last September.

And whilst the 32-year-old hardly featured during his opening five months back at the club, he ended with an impressive return of 16 goals and three assists in just 19 starts across all competitions.

Bale had an up and down relationship with Mourinho, but following his departure in April, ended up becoming a regular under Ryan Mason.

However, the reason for Bale’s exit last summer was because his well-publicised relationship with Zinedine Zidane had fallen apart.

But the Frenchman has since left and been replaced by Ancelotti, who bought the winger to the Spanish capital back in 2013, and then won the Champions League with him in their first season together.

Asked whether Spurs could pursue another loan deal for the Welshman, Bridge told Football FanCast:

“One thing I have heard is that Ancelotti wants to keep him, so I don’t know whether has changed there. Let’s face it, Real Madrid don’t have the Galacticos like they used to.

“They’ve just lost Ramos, Varane has gone to Manchester United. Ancelotti is probably thinking, I’ve seen first-hand that there’s still a lot left in the tank for Gareth.”

– Estamos, jogo a jogo, alcançando nossos objetivos – comentou o treinador.

Vamos trabalhar jogo a jogo. Para nós, ganhar a Taça Guanabara não adiantou muito. Agora adiantou. Estamos na semi com vantagem – finalizou o técnico.
