Spurs: Paratici to open talks for Singo

Tottenham Hotspur are interested in a deal to bring Wilfried Singo to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the summer transfer window.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by Italian publication Tuttosport (via Sport Witness), who claim that Fabio Paratici is set to open talks with Torino regarding a deal for the right-back.

The report goes on to state that Antonio Conte is believed to be a fan of the 21-year-old and would support a summer swoop, however, the Serie A side are not thought to be open to parting with the Ivory Coast international unless a substantial offer is submitted – with €20m (£17m) reported to be the club’s asking price.

Conte can axe Emerson with Singo

Considering how impressive Singo has been for Torino this season, coupled with how much Emerson Royal has struggled since his €30m (£25m) move to north London last summer, it is easy to see why Paratici and Conte would be interested in a deal for the Ivorian ahead of the club’s 2022/23 campaign.

Indeed, over his 29 Serie A appearances this term, the £25m-rated full-back – who is also comfortable operating from wing-back or right midfield – has been one of Ivan Juric’s standout performers, scoring three goals, providing four assists and creating four big chances for his teammates, as well as taking an average of 1.2 shots and making 0.7 key passes per game.

The £5.4k-per-week defender has also impressed in metrics more typical of his position, making an average of 0.7 interceptions, 1.7 tackles, 1.3 clearances, 24.2 passes, completing one dribble and winning 5.9 duels – at a success rate of 57% – per fixture.

These returns have seen the player who Matteo Bonetti claimed “has been a revelation” for the Granata average an extremely impressive SofaScore match rating of 6.98, ranking him as Torino’s joint sixth-best player in the Italian top flight.

In comparison, over Emerson’s 23 Premier League outings this season, the £25m-rated right-back has been rather less impressive, scoring one goal, registering one assist and creating one big chance, in addition to making an average of 0.7 interceptions, 2.3 tackles, 28.3 passes, completing 0.6 dribbles and winning 5.3 duels – at a success rate of 55% – per game.

These returns have seen the £62k-per-week player who Jonathan Woodgate dubbed “horrendous” earlier this season average a disappointing SofaScore match rating of 6.87, ranking him as Spurs’ 10th-worst performer in the English top flight.

As such, with the Brazil international already being linked with a move away from north London this summer, it would appear wise for Conte to cash in on Emerson while the interest is there, before reinvesting the fee received from the 23-year-old’s sale into a move for the much more promising Singo.

Southampton without Tella for Coventry

Speaking to the press (via Hampshire Live), Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl has confirmed some injury news involving midfielder Nathan Tella.

The Lowdown: Saints return to action…

The Saints return to action for the first time in two weeks today as they take on Coventry City in the FA Cup 4th round, coming off the back of an impressive 1-1 draw at home to league leaders Man City in the Premier League.

Hasenhuttl will be looking to replicate aspects of that game moving forward this season as he chases a strong and encouraging finish to 2021/2022.

An FA cup run would arguably give supporters a real sense of hope that this campaign could lead to great improvement in the future as Hasenhuttl now confirms some injury news ahead of the impending Saturday bout.

The Latest: Hasenhuttl confirms Tella absence…

Speaking to the media, he says that exciting starlet Tella will unfortunately miss the match against Coventry as he is still sidelined through injury.

“We have two injured players, Alex McCarthy who has a long time out and Nathan Tella is still out,” Hasenhuttl said (via Hampshire Live).

“Will Smallbone is back in sessions and Tino Livramento also, that’s it so far.”

The Verdict: Not ideal…

Recently handed a new three-and-a-half-year contract at St Mary’s, thanks in part to his brilliant form this season and massive potential, Southampton will want Tella back in action as soon as possible.

Attracting the joint-most fouls of any Saints player this season, highlighting just how difficult he is to play against, Hasenhuttl hasn’t held back in his praise for the 22-year-old.

Indeed, the Austrian has branded Tella a ‘big threat’ when at his best and it’s safe to say his eventual return will boost Southampton to no end.

Alas, they will have to fare without him again today.

Win revives Derbyshire's hopes

Derbyshire revived their Friends Provident t20 hopes with a five-wicket win over Lancashire Lightning in a low-scoring match at Queen’s Park in Chesterfield

04-Jul-2010
ScorecardDerbyshire revived their Friends Provident t20 hopes with a five-wicket win over Lancashire Lightning in a low-scoring match at Queen’s Park in Chesterfield. Tim Groenewald took three wickets for 18 runs as the Lightning lost half their batsmen for 22 before an unbeaten 65 from 51 balls by Gareth Cross – his highest score for nearly three years – lifted the visitors to 132 for 7.The Falcons slipped to 12 for 2 but 50 from 44 balls by Garry Park saw them to a fifth win in the North Group with 11 balls to spare and condemned the Lightning to a fourth defeat. Lancashire had been on the back foot from the start as Groenewald wrecked the top order by taking a wicket in each of his first three overs and the innings was in tatters at 22 for 5 in the sixth over.Stephen Moore lost his middle stump to the third ball of the match, Steven Croft pulled a short ball to mid-wicket and Paul Horton was lbw playing across one from Charl Langeveldt. Mark Chilton chipped Groenewald tamely to midwicket and when Tom Smith was caught behind driving at Steffan Jones’ first ball, the Lightning were facing humiliation. But Cross hit back with the help of Nathan McCullum and Glen Chapple and a dropped return catch by Robin Peterson in the 14th over when he was on 21. McCullum had been caught at long-off for 14 in Peterson’s previous over and if the South African had held Cross’s low drive, the Lightning would have been 68 for 7.It allowed Cross to make his best Twenty20 score and share a stand of 63 in eight overs with Chapple, who chipped in with 21 off 24 balls before he top-edged a pull to square leg in the last over. Cross had already swept Peterson for six and he signed off in style by pulling the last ball of the innings out of the park as the normally accurate Langeveldt went for 18 from the final over. The Lightning needed early wickets to put pressure on the Falcons and they claimed two in the first three overs with big-hitters Loots Bosman and Wes Durston both failing. Durston was bowled for three pulling Simon Kerrigan and Bosman was stumped for nine giving McCullum the charge with the total on 12.Another quick wicket would have caused some jitters in the home camp but skipper Greg Smith and Park added 47 in seven overs although Tom Smith thought he had Park caught behind on nine off what was signalled a wide by Vanburn Holder.Smith drove Stephen Parry to long-off in the 10th over but Park and Peterson took the Falcons to within sight of victory by adding 55 in seven overs.Although Peterson was needlessly run out for 29 attempting a second and Park sliced a drive to backward point, John Sadler ended the Lightning’s hopes of a late comeback by lifting Parry for six over midwicket before Jon Clare cut Chapple for the winning boundary.

West Ham failed with £5.5m Zapata move

West Ham failed with a last-minute loan-to-buy bid for Atalanta striker Duvan Zapata, according to reports by Football Insider.

The Lowdown: January’s striker pursuit

One of David Moyes’ greatest failures of the January transfer window was the failure to secure fresh additions to their attacking ranks. As has been the case for some time, Michail Antonio is the only recognised senior centre-forward at the east London club.

Unsurprisingly, many supporters have become increasingly worried with this situation due to the Jamaica international’s lengthy injury history and the club’s failure to replace Sebastien Haller when he left the Irons for Ajax this time last year.

Despite being linked with Benfica youngster Darwin Nunez, West Ham saw their deadline day bid for the Uruguayan rejected, capping a hugely frustrating month on the transfer front…or so it seemed.

The Latest: Irons agreed fee for Zapata before deal collapsed

According to Football Insider, West Ham had offered the £5.5m loan fee that Atalanta demanded for Zapata, and the two clubs came to an agreement regarding the option of making the transfer permanent in the summer.

A deal sheet was submitted to the Premier League but the paperwork could not be completed by the 11pm transfer deadline, causing the move to collapse – a calamity which perfectly sums up how the January transfer window went for the Hammers.

The Verdict: Too little, too late

Whilst West Ham and Moyes could come out and claim that they were doing all they could to secure a new striker, the matter of the fact is that they had the whole month to get business done.

Even if Zapata wasn’t their first choice, it wouldn’t have mattered, as a striker with abundant Serie A and Champions League experience would have provided much-needed rotation for Antonio.

Having been described as a ‘beast’ and ‘like a train’, Zapata’s failed move begs the question as to why Moyes and co did not try and get the deal done sooner, instead of waiting until it was all too late.

Cook and Pietersen hurt poor Bangladesh

Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsAlastair Cook continued his impressive form with a century in his first Test as captain•PA Photos

Alastair Cook is only keeping the England captaincy hot seat warm, but he continues to sit very comfortably in the position as he maintained his impressive tour of Bangladesh with an unbeaten 158 on his first day as the Test leader. Alongside Kevin Pietersen’s much-awaited return to form, which ended agonisingly on 99 to a left-arm spinner, the pair formed the backbone of England’s dominant opening-day total of 374 for 3 at Chittagong.Cook became the fifth England captain to score a hundred in his first match in charge. The last one to do so was Pietersen although that innings, against South Africa at The Oval, feels like a lifetime ago. At last, though, there was a glimpse of the Pietersen flair as he and Cook added 170 in 45 overs, but that does have to be countered by the immensely dire quality of the bowling on offer. Bangladesh started poorly and didn’t get any better, finishing the day with a series of freebies for Paul Collingwood as he eased to 32 and Cook closed three short of a new career-best.It was thanks to the generosity of Shakib Al Hasan, the Bangladesh captain, that the visitors were able to take first use of a surface that looks certain to wear and turn considerably – albeit slowly – as the match progresses. His decision to bowl will go down among the most unfathomable calls, although it smacked largely of a lack of confidence in his own team’s batting than any belief that it was the best way to challenge in the game. However, England weren’t going to look a gift-horse in the mouth especially after packing the side with batting. Cook was barely troubled during his 244-ball innings as he continued his quietly impressive tour where he has maintained, and improved, his form despite the added burden of captaincy. During the one-day series there was a new-found freedom to his strokeplay and he brought that confidence into the five-day game, never typified better than when he reached his hundred from 148 deliveries with a slog-swept six. His first boundary was the same shot and it meant he doubled his tally of Test sixes in the space of an innings.

England captains who began with hundreds

  • Archie MacLaren 109 at Sydney in 1897-98

  • Allan Lamb 119 at Bridgetown in 1989-90

  • Andrew Strauss 128 at Lord’s in 2006

  • Kevin Pietersen 100 at The Oval in 2008

  • Alastair Cook 158* at Chittagong in 2009-10

A sign of the confidence in Cook’s game was a return of the cover drive which he shelved in South Africa after his troubles outside off stump to the quick bowlers. However, the threat from the Bangladesh attack was far removed from that of Dale Steyn and Co. and he pierced the off side with increasingly regularity. If Andrew Strauss had woken in the early hours in the UK he will have watched contently with the team in safe hands. But while Cook came into the match with form, it was a vastly different story for Pietersen. He entered under mounting pressure having endured another lean run since arriving in Bangladesh and a continuation of his poor record against left-arm spinners. He was soon facing Abdur Razzak, but it was a missed opportunity from Shakib when he didn’t introduce himself straight away and instead stuck with Rubel Hossain after his dismissal of Jonathan Trott.Pietersen has spent hours in the nets working alongside Andy Flower on his technique against left-arm spinners and there was a clear change in method in evidence as he stayed leg-side of the ball rather that getting squared-up. He laid an early marker with a fine inside-out drive through mid off and his footwork was far more certain. In the final over before tea he reach fifty from 60 balls with some help from a misfield and after the break began moving through the gears with a hint of the flamboyance that has been missing since he lost the captaincy. He made a statement to Shakib by dispatching him for a six and two fours – all straight down the ground – in the space of four balls. It appeared he would blaze to three figures, but this isn’t, yet, the Pietersen of old and he tried to nudge his way there which resulted in him being squared-up by Razzak.Cook, though, motored on past 150 before shutting up shop as stumps approached. England batsmen don’t score many double hundreds – there’s a big one on offer here. He had been outscored during the early exchanges as Michael Carberry made a confident start to his Test career having been handed his cap alongside the Middlesex paceman Steven Finn. Carberry eased to 30 before becoming tied down by offspin and fell to an ambitious sweep against Mahmudullah.Jonathan Trott went about his innings at his own sedate pace, but looked confident after his warm-up hundred as he added 77 with Cook. He was given out caught off the helmet from a Rubel short ball which bounced as much as anything all day. There is no UDRS in this series so all Trott could do was shake his head and it was the only thing to go Bangladesh’s way. However, they didn’t deserve anything else and it is already only a question of how long they can hang on in this Test.

Leeds handed Raphinha transfer boost

Leeds United have been handed a huge boost in their bid to keep Raphinha at Elland Road beyond the January transfer window.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to Paul Gorst’s recent report for the Liverpool Echo, with the journalist stating that – despite Liverpool being believed to have scouted the winger on a number of occasions this season, as well as being heavily linked with a swoop for the former Rennes wizard – Jurgen Klopp’s side look unlikely to make a move for the 24-year-old in the winter market.

In his report, Gorst writes: “Leeds United’s Raphinha is another who club scouts are believed to be running the rule over, but a January move will almost certainly not be forthcoming.”

Bielsa will be buzzing

Considering just how important Raphinha has become to Leeds since his £17m move to Elland Road last summer, the news that Liverpool are not planning to launch an offensive for the Brazil international in January is sure to have left Bielsa buzzing.

Indeed, over his 30 Premier League appearances last term, the £34m-rated forward highly impressed for the Whites, bagging six goals, providing nine assists and creating 12 big chances for his teammates, as well as taking 2.2 shots and making 2.1 key passes per game.

These returns saw the player who Illan Meslier dubbed “unbelievable” and a “storm” earn a seasonal SofaScore match rating of 7.14, ranking him as Bielsa’s third-best performer in the league as the Brazilian played a crucial role in his team securing a remarkable ninth-placed finish on their return to the top flight.

With Leeds having struggled so far in the current campaign, Raphinha’s performances have been even more important for his manager, with the £58k-per-week winger scoring seven goals, registering one assist and creating four big chances over his 14 league outings – returns which have seen him average a SofaScore match rating of 7.16.

As such, the news that the Reds do not look as if they will make a move for the 24-year-old this winter will undoubtedly come as a major boost to Bielsa and his side, as retaining the services of the Brazil forward would very much appear to reduce the Whites’ chances of being pulled into a relegation scrap come the end of the season.

IPL extends Pakistan's deadline

The IPL has extended the deadline for Pakistan’s players to submit the relevant documents needed to ensure their participation in next season’s IPL, even as Pakistan’s sports ministry seeks permission for the players to play there next year. The league’s chief executive, Sundar Raman, told Cricinfo that the deadline for the PCB to submit the no-objection certificates (NOCs) and other documents to enable the Pakistan players to take part in the 2010 tournament now stands extended to December 7.With the Pakistan team currently playing a Test series in New Zealand, it became clear over the last week that the necessary paperwork would take more time. Wasim Bari, the PCB’s chief operating officer, had earlier said the NOCs had already been sent by the board in order to initiate the visa process.A possible hurdle, however, could be created by the National Assembly Standing Committee on Sports which raised questions over the NOCs. “The NOCs issued to the cricketers for participation in the IPL is without the approval of the federal government hence they are illegal,’ said Jamshed Ahmed Dasti, an increasingly vocal legislative voice against the Pakistan board and head of the committee. “Who will be responsible for security of the players, not least the federal government, because it was never consulted for issuance of the NOC.”Pakistan’s sports ministry says it has no problems with the players going to India, but insisted that it had to seek permission first from the foreign and interior ministry. NOCs from three players – Umar Gul, Sohail Tanvir and Abdul Razzaq – have been sent. “The (sports) ministry has referred the NOC cases of these players to the foreign office and interior ministry for political and security clearance,” spokesman Faik Ali told .”We processed the cases of these players on the very same day on urgent basis and we do hope to get the reply from both ministries by next week. The sports ministry has no objection that its players go and compete in IPL, but we have to seek the government’s clearance. Our ministry has forwarded the cases to the concerned ministries and now we will wait for their response.”Pakistan’s players were absent from the second IPL, held earlier this year in South Africa, after their government did not allow them to travel to India – where the tournament was originally to be held – for security reasons. The decision came in the wake of the Mumbai attacks last year, after which relations between India and Pakistan deteriorated considerably. Eleven players from Pakistan had taken part in the first IPL, though after the Mumbai attacks, only four were retained by their franchises, though their contracts were suspended until further resolution. The PCB has been keen on getting their players involved once again after Ijaz Butt, the board chairman, raised the matter on a trip to India last month and said after that the relevant government authorities had also cleared Pakistan’s players to play.
