Two matches of the last round of the President’s Trophy have been shifted out of Punjab, to Islamabad and Mirpur, following differences between the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and Punjab Government.Faisalabad’s Iqbal Stadium was scheduled to host the match between State Bank of Pakistan and Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited while Pakistan International Airlines and Water and Power Development Authority were set to play at Jinnah Stadium in Sialkot. The trouble started after the government’s city-district administration disrupted the matches of the ongoing PCB Under-19 inter district/department tournament in Gujranwala and Sialkot. A match between Sialkot and Karachi Blue was interrupted on November 11 when a helicopter carrying top Punjab government officials landed at the Gujranwala stadium, forcing the match to be abandoned. An attempt was made to host another match in Gujranwala, between Sialkot and Gujranwala, but the city-district administration refused to give permission. The PCB relocated it to Sialkot but the match was stopped and the city-district administration evacuated the stadium for an undisclosed reason.”There is no clash between the PCB and the Punjab Government,” a PCB spokesman told ESPNcricinfo. “We are a sports body and want the games to go on and to avoid any further disruption we have decided to move our matches from the Punjab province to other parts of the country.”To avoid further disruptions, the President’s Trophy matches have been moved to the National Stadium in Islamabad and Quaid-e-Azam stadium in Mirpur. “In the meantime, we are in negotiations with the Government to sort out any the issues they think need to be sorted,” the spokesman said. “We want the smooth functioning of our tournament and apart from the President’s Trophy matches the Under-19 match (Peshawar v Sialkot) has also been relocated to Peshawar.”The PCB chairman Zaka Ashraf said the board can’t afford any disruptions at the moment. “We understand that the grounds are the property of the Punjab Government and it’s up to them if they will let us play but they should show good spirit and work with a big heart,” Ashraf told reporters in Lahore. “But if they carry on with such a condescending attitude we are left with no other choice but to take the matches away from the province.”The row had started in March this year when the PCB refused to grant permission to the Punjab government for holding a non-sports function at the Rawalpindi Stadium. Later the PCB, headquartered in Lahore (the capital of Punjab), wrote a letter to the chief secretary of the Punjab Government on April 16 this year regarding security arrangements and plans but the government said it was unaware of such a request. The PCB then blamed the Punjab Government for lack of coordination, which affected Bangladesh’s proposed visit in April, over security and safety concerns.Pakistan and Bangladesh were due to play one ODI and one Twenty20 at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore, on April 29 and 30 this year but the tour was pulled back over a writ petition filed in the Dhaka High Court after the tour appeared to be hit by logistic issues. The PCB, the country’s richest sports body, owns no stadiums of its own. Currently, all stadiums around the country are on lease with MoUs with the city-district governments.

Slippery ball puzzle for Australians

Frustrated as much by a slippery ball as a doughty Afghanistan during their 66-run victory, Australia’s bowlers must find ways of keeping dry in the damp night-time air before they face Pakistan

Daniel Brettig26-Aug-2012Frustrated as much by a slippery ball as a doughty Afghanistan during their 66-run victory, Australia’s bowlers must find ways of keeping dry in the damp night-time air before they face a far more accomplished Pakistan team. While the Australians began brightly in defence of 272 for 8, reducing Afghanistan to 49 for 4 inside 12 overs, the longer the innings went the more they battled to keep their hands and the ball dry. Their difficulties were reminiscent of those experienced by Mark Taylor’s men in the 1996 World Cup final, won by Sri Lanka on a dewy night in Lahore.Mitchell Starc, who won the match award for figures of 4-47 that included four of the first six Afghanistan wickets, said that while happy with the overall effort, the tourists would be looking into how to maintain better control with the ball later in the innings, with two more matches to be played in Sharjah against Pakistan.”I don’t think we thought too much about the humidity, we thought it was going to be more a dry heat,” Starc said. “As we’ve seen the last few days and again tonight, it’s more the sweat factor that’s going to play a part and the dew as well. Both balls towards the end were quite hard to hold onto – you’d wipe yourself with a towel and you were already sweating again.”So it’s something we’re going to have to look at in training before the Pakistan series, but in the end I think the bowlers did quite well to control that ball. There’s a few little things we’re going to have to work on, but the batsmen put on a good score for us to defend, and we defended it.”Apart from the humidity, the Australians were also somewhat surprised to find a Sharjah pitch that did not turn with quite the same venom of those prepared for their preparations in Darwin. Though the surface lacked grass and did not offer any great pace, nine of the Afghanistan wickets fell to the fast men.”I think the wicket played a lot better than we thought it would,” Starc said. “We prepared for wickets that were going to spin a lot. The quicks took nine of our wickets so I think the fast bowlers are going to play a massive part as well as the spinners in these conditions.”Afghanistan put up quite a good fight for us ahead of the Pakistan games, and the conditions a lot of us haven’t played in before, so it was a bit of a learning curve for some of us. I thought it was a good game in preparation for the next series.”Starc said the Australians had been impressed by the intensity of Afghanistan’s fielding in the heatof the early evening. “A lot of us made comments during our batting innings that they fielded quite well,” he said. “They were out there with a lot of energy, and that surprised us a little bit that they fielded as well as they did, and then with the bat they came out quite aggressively as well … it was quite a competitive match.”Afghanistan’s captain Nowroz Mangal said the game had provided decent evidence of his team’s ability to compete with the major nations. “The players played very well. Australia is one of the best teams in the world,” he said. “The way the bowlers performed and the way we fielded, it was quite satisfactory and we proved we can compete with such big sides. We have learned a lot.”This was a better performance than we put up against Pakistan. I’d like to thank Cricket Australia for allowing us to play their team. We played the T20 World Cup in the West Indies and we’ll rectify the errors we made then.”

Late wickets scupper UAE fightback

ScorecardThough UAE put up a much better batting effort in their second innings, their overnight lead of 81, with three wickets in hand, may not give them much comfort going into the final day. After the top order put on fifty-plus stands, they failed to stretch their lead as Scotland hit back with late wickets to give them the edge.UAE’s overnight pair of Arshad Ali and Ahmed Raza resumed on 74 for 2 and added a further 44 before Majid Haq removed Raza. The fourth wicket stand of 96 was UAE’s best, between Arshad and Saqib Ali. Arshad made a patient 71, off 238 balls, before he was dismissed by Haq, shortly after UAE wiped out the deficit.Saqib and Khurram Khan then put together another half-century stand. However, a double-strike by Gordon Goudie, the right-arm seamer, in one over, brought Scotland right back into the contest. He trapped both Khurram and Amjad Ali lbw, and four overs later dismissed the well-set Saqib for 77. Saqib hit ten fours in his 192-ball knock. It was left to the tail-end pair of Fayyaz Ahmed and Amjad Javed to put up a fight.

Bulls caravan rolls on over Blues

McDermott followed up with the wicket of Tim Cruickshank, bowled while attempting to pull, and the rest faded away. Some late hitting by Starc allowed him to claim the match award, but the smiles were all Queensland’s.

Tait to play in Zimbabwe T20 tournament

Shaun Tait, the Australia fast bowler, is set to add to his tally of Twenty20 teams after agreeing terms with Zimbabwean domestic franchise Mid West Rhinos

ESPNcricinfo staff19-Aug-2011Shaun Tait, the Australia fast bowler, is set to add to his tally of Twenty20 teams after agreeing terms with Zimbabwean domestic franchise Mid West Rhinos. Tait will play for Rhinos during Zimbabwe’s domestic Twenty20 competition in late November this year.Tait, who signed up to play for the Melbourne Renegades in Australia’s Big Bash League six weeks ago and will also represent Dolphins, the Durban-based South African franchise, for the Pro20 competition early next year, said he hoped his Zimbabwe stint would help boost his match fitness ahead of his Big Bash outing.”That’s the thing with Twenty20 tournaments, you’ve got to pick which ones are at the right time to keep your match fitness up, and rest in between,” he said. ”It’s just [before] the Big Bash, so it’s perfect timing.”The dates for Zimbabwe’s fortnight-long Twenty20 tournament have not been finalised but it is expected that the competition will be completed by December 3, which will allow Tait to travel back to Melbourne well in time to prepare for the Big Bash.Tait retired from Tests in 2008 and quit ODIs too following Australia’s exit in the quarter-final stage of the 2011 World Cup. He then represented Rajasthan Royals in the IPL this year, grabbing six wickets in four games. He was forced to turn down a deal with Surrey earlier this year due to an elbow injury sustained during the IPL. His Zimbabwe deal was set up by his former teammate Jason Gillespie, who has also re-signed as coach of Rhinos.”The way it’s going I’m just going to play [Twenty20] tournaments,” Tait, who is still available to play Twenty20 cricket for Australia, said. “If clubs are keen to sign me, that’s great. I’ve become sort of a freelance Twenty20 player.”

In-form Kolkata v giant-killers Kochi

Big Picture

If you are a Kochi fan, be worried. Be very worried. Kochi are playing at home. They have just won one game at home, cribbed silently about the pitches, and seem a happy unit away from home. Even their senior players, Mahela Jayawardene and Brad Hodge, expressed their relief and happiness at playing away from home on a “good pitch” in their last game against Delhi. The way they performed would have given them heart. They went in with a four-pronged seam attack and it worked for them. Another thing that would give them hope is their record against the big teams; they have beaten Chennai, Mumbai, Kolkata and Delhi.Even Gautam Gambhir has stopped mentioning trying to bring “joy to the city of joy”. It’s now accepted that Kolkata Knight Riders are a team to reckon with. Victory is no longer a pleasant surprise; it’s expected now. There were murmurs that Yusuf Pathan and Eoin Morgan didn’t do much in the first half of the tournament. So what does Gambhir do? He pushed Morgan to open and promoted Yusuf ahead in the last game. Morgan has got some starts and Yusuf exploded in the last match against Deccan. Nearly all their batsmen are in form and with Iqbal Abdulla and Rajat Bhatia coming good with the ball against Deccan, their attack looks more rounded.

Team talk

It will come down to the pitch. If it has pace and bounce, or even lack of it, Kochi might reprise their four-seam attack. Kolkata are unlikely to change the winning combination.Predict the playing XIs for this match. Play ESPNcricinfo Team selector.

In the spotlight

Jacques Kallis has been one of the key factors in Kolkata’s revival. He has ensured the team doesn’t lose wickets against the new ball and has set up a good platform for the middle and end overs. It’s a pattern with the teams at the top: Sachin Tendulkar and Mike Hussey have done similar jobs for their teams. Kallis has always been synonymous with solidity and he has not disappointed his fans thus far.Brad Hodge is someone like Kallis: solid, experienced, assured and someone who is extremely self-aware of his game. However, he has had a quiet tournament so far, just tallying 157 runs from nine games. His form was perfectly captured in the game against Deccan Chargers when he played a rather loose, ambitious drive way outside the line of a delivery from Ishant Sharma. He made a brisk unbeaten 24 in his last game and said it was good to get out there and play some shots. Will that little knock be the signpost of his turnaround this season?

Prime numbers

  • Sreesanth has the fourth lowest economy rate (5.83) for any bowler who has bowled 18 overs or more in the tournament. Yusuf Pathan has the lowest economy rate (5.96) for Kolkata
  • Manoj Tiwary and Ravindra Jadeja have hit 12 sixes, the third highest number by any batsman. Yuvraj Singh stands at the top with 15 sixes.

The chatter

“I am making an effort not to go for too many unconventional strokes. I am not comfortable with them and if cricketing shots can get me the desired runs I don’t need to resort to reverse sweeps … I have worked very hard in the gym over the last few months. I was at home during the World Cup and utilised that time by improving on my upper-body strength which is important in international cricket.”
“I always believed that there were never great captains and there will be no great captain. There are only great teams. No captain can win you the game. It is the team that wins the game. So far, I am enjoying my captaincy … You end up taking responsibility, you end up learning a lot, you feel happy when you end up winning.”
Gautam Gambhir indulges in some straight talk
